Earth Day

The gorgeous spring weather in Las Vegas entices us to go outside. And Mother Nature offers an irresistible invitation to go out and enjoy and appreciate her beauty and gifts. Earth day, April 22, was created to honor and show our respect; a time to reflect and focus on ways to care for the earth and all living creatures who co-habit the earth with us. We are interconnected in the great circle of life; on some level we interact with every creature on this planet earth – our home!

Caring for animals and pets is a very important way to honor our world. So often we feel overwhelmed because there are so many needs and problems. We feel that our small efforts could not possibly make a difference. As Jane Goodall said, cumulatively, small decisions, choices, actions, make a very big difference. And collectively, animal shelters/rescues, fosters, donators, adoptees, and others, the Las Vegas pet community is making a big difference.

VOLUNTEERS Appreciated! VOLUNTEERS Needed! National Volunteer Week - April 16-22, 2023

A week to celebrate service; it is the perfect time to say Thank you to volunteers and the perfect time to encourage people to volunteer.

Thank You Volunteers!

As a volunteer you a VIP, a very important person. You’re part of the vast numbers of people who truly make a difference especially in our local pet community. Local animal welfare groups, organizations, and animal shelters/rescues need a core group of dedicated volunteers to accomplish their mission and goals.

Currently it is estimated that approximately 77 million Americans engage in volunteer activities annually; they spend about 7 billion hours helping others in a variety of endeavors. Volunteerism is part of our country’s history; the early settlers survived by helping each other. They banded together to plant crops, build houses, and fight disease. Many volunteer organizations that exist today were formed in the 1800’s and 1900’s such as the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross. The ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and the American Humane were founded in the mid 1800’s.

The most important reason to volunteer, of course, is to give back to the community and to help others. Yet there are numerous benefits for volunteering. It helps reduce stress, anxiety and depression; volunteering can provide a sense of fulfillment and purpose. Socially, it helps create meaningful connections with other people.

Ask yourself the following questions: How much time do I realistic have to offer an organization? What are my skills, interests, and goals? What do I enjoy doing?

HERE ARE A FEW HELPFUL IDEAS TO CONSIDER:

TRANSPORTATION NEEDS – If you have a car or van and love driving this might be for you. It is often overlooked. Shelters need drivers to transport animals to vet appointments and pet adoption events to list a few.

PET CARE – Are you a hands-on person? Consider taking shelter dogs for walks. You can offer to do other activities that help stimulate and socialize pets. Hanging out, socializing, petting and playing with shelter pets helps prepare them for their new homes.

PUBLIC RELATIONS – Do you love publicity and social media. You can contact pet stores, veterinarian offices, and other places to hang up fliers to promote pet adoption events. Sharing adoption profiles on your personal social media sites really helps. Consider offering your social media skills to help a local rescue develop or manage their social media plans.

TECHNOLOGY – Are you a techie? Rapid changes make it almost impossible for smaller nonprofits to keep up with technology. Website design is another area where volunteers are often utilized. Websites need to be constantly updated – pet events and pets available for adoption are always changing.

WRITING –Is writing your passion? Pets need great adoption profiles to let people know how loveable they are. There are newsletters, ad copy, fundraising letters, grant applications. Your skills as a writer will be greatly appreciated.

PHOTOGRAPHY – Love taking pictures? Do you know how to bring out the best in your subject? Do your photos capture your subject’s personality? Good pet photos on websites and social media sites make an enormous difference in finding forever homes for them. You can make this difference!

Check out local shelters or rescues; review the volunteer sections of their websites or social media sites to see their needs. Attending pet adoption events or other pet events are great opportunities to meet staff or other volunteers to get acquainted on a more personal level.

Service is the rent we pay for being. It is the very purpose of life, and not something you do in your spare time.

ENVIRONMENT FOR YOUR CAT

We want the best for our feline family members. What is the purr-fect environment for them?

I think our cats would agree with this: the purr-fect environment would be one that is built on the foundation of love; one where they feel safe and protected. One where their instinctual needs to climb, to explore and to hunt are met.

The following three areas will be helpful as you create your cat’s environment:

MOST IMPORTANT IS TO ESTABLISH A RELATIONSHIP OF TRUST AND LOVE.

One of the most common myths about cats is that are aloof and solitary. Learning the unique and subtle ways cats communicate requires time and patience. With cats, learning their eye language is important. A very easy yet almost magical eye movement to learn is the slow blink. If your cat stares at you with wide-open eyes, then blinks slowly, they’re saying “I love you” and “I trust you”. The slow blink has become known as kitty kisses. In response, you can return the slow blink. First, establish eye contact for a very short time and then slowly blink. You’re telling your cat “I love you”. Many times, a cat that won’t tolerate being held or cuddled will still send kitty kisses to their person. The experience of seeing your cat say “I love you” and being able to return that love in a language your cat understands establishes a new level of trust and deepens your bond.

Create vertical space

Cats love to be in high places and climbing is normal behavior for them! They’re “hardwired” for it. In the wild, cats are prey for larger animals and quickly climbing a tree allowed them to escape large predators who couldn’t climb trees. The leaves and branches also hid them from the flying predators such as owls and eagles. Their high vantage point allowed them to pounce on unsuspecting prey on the ground. Physically cats are well equipped to climb; their muscular

hind legs and strong backs help propel them up a tree quickly. Their claws hook into the bark to aid in their ascent up the tree. Though modern indoor cats are safe from predators and do not need to pounce on unsuspecting prey the innate need to climb is strong. To satisfy this need provide a safe space that enlarges their “territory” such as a cat tree, perch or a window seat. Respect your cat’s need to claw and climb their way to the top to view their world, their kingdom.

Plan for playtime

Cats need to play! Their play helps them learn the necessary skills of stalking, pouncing, catching and killing prey. Cats in the wild had to hunt birds, mice, and small animals to survive. They were always ready to pounce and catch their next meal. Domesticated cats need toys and activities to provide opportunities to use their prey behaviors. Toys that mimic quick-moving prey, that can be picked up, carried or tossed in the air are favorites with most cats. Small stuffed mice can be hidden in a variety of places for your cat to discover. Play sessions should be anywhere from five to fifteen minutes twice a day. It’s important to finish their play or prey time with treats or food. This completes the prey sequence of hunt, catch, play and eat.

The purr-fect feline environment nurtures and deepens the bond and connection between you and your cat. It helps keep them content and healthy!

ALLERGIES in Dogs and Cats

Allergies are a common issue in both dogs and cats. They can range from mild skin irritation to severe reactions that can impact the animal’s health and quality of life. Allergies can be triggered by a variety of things such as food, flea bites, and environmental factors. Understanding the symptoms and treatment options for allergies in pets is crucial for pet owners who want to ensure their furry friends live happy and healthy lives.

SYMPTOMS OF ALLERGIES IN PETS

Unfortunately, heart disease is sometimes only detected when it becomes severe or when a pet dies suddenly. When pets do display symptoms of heart disease, they may include signs such as:

• Recurrent skin or ear infections

• Frequent licking or scratching the skin and ears

• Redness or rashes of the skin

• Salivary staining of the fur

• Overgrooming behavior

• Hair loss

• Vomiting

• Diarrhea

• Flatulence

• Weight loss

• Abdominal discomfort

DIAGNOSING ALLERGIES IN PETS

Diagnosing allergies in pets can be a difficult process because allergies can cause symptoms identical to other skin and gastrointestinal conditions. To diagnose allergies in your pet, your veterinarian will first ask you questions about your pet’s history, including asking about your pet’s diet and medication history. Your veterinarian will also perform a comprehensive head-to-tail physical examination on your pet. Testing for allergies may include skin scraping to rule out parasites, skin cytology to identify infection, intradermal or blood testing to identify sensitivity to environmental allergens, and an elimination diet trial to diagnose food allergies.

TREATING ALLERGIES IN PETS

Treatment for allergies in pets depends on the type of allergy and the severity of the symptoms. For food allergies, avoidance of foods that trigger the allergy is the best and most effective treatment. These pets often do best on a prescription hypoallergenic or limited ingredient diet.

Pets with flea bite allergies can be managed with year-round flea prevention. These pets often experience extreme itching after even just one flea bite, so prevention is essential for their well-being.

Pets with environmental allergies can be more difficult to manage. These pets often react to allergens such as pollens, dust, molds, grasses, and other environmental factors that may be unavoidable in day to day life. These pets may be managed with medications such as corticosteroids to manage itching, or allergy medications such as antihistamines, Apoquel, or Cytopoint (dogs). Pets with environmental allergies may also benefit from immunotherapy, which involves giving the animal small doses of the allergen to build up a tolerance over time.

Pets with allergies of any kind may also need additional medications such as antibiotics or medicated shampoos, mousses, or creams to manage the secondary skin infections that often go hand in hand with allergy flare-ups.

It is important to remember that an allergic pet may experience more than one type of allergy. For example, a pet could have both food and environmental allergies, making diagnosis and treatment of the condition more complex. Your veterinarian will determine the best combination of treatments for your pet’s needs based on the type and severity of allergies your pet is experiencing. Management of allergies is a lifelong process, but your pet can still live a long and comfortable life with this condition.

5 ESSENTIAL COMMANDS EVERY DOG SHOULD KNOW

The “Sit” command is often the first obedience command people teach their dog. While it may seem pretty basic, it plays an important role in managing many unwanted behaviors. The act of sitting intrinsically brings on a momentary sense of calmness to your dog. They are less prone to quick movements while sitting and are much less likely to jump on visitors or other dogs. Having them sit while you greet someone at the door or while waiting to cross a street will help keep them calm and more controllable. It also cues them that they have been given a command and will help keep them focused on you for further instructions.

The "Come or Here" command is important when you need your dog to come back to you quickly. It is probably the most critical command for your dog to obey to keep them safe. (You should decide which specific word you want to use for this request so your dog will not be confused.) If your dog is off-leash for any reason, you will need to depend on this command to keep your dog away from dangerous situations. You may need to call your dog away from an aggressive dog at the dog park or keep them from chasing smaller animals (like cats, squirrels, or birds) into traffic. The “Come” command will help you control your dog and avoid any situation you determine is potentially dangerous.

Training your dog to obey specific commands can sometimes be a difficult task. Although it can be a little frustrating at times, it can also be one of the most rewarding experiences a pet parent can have. A solid training foundation will strengthen the bond you have with your dog and will help in the overall socialization of your pup. While there are many commands you may eventually teach your dog, there are 5 basic obedience commands every dog should know. 1 "SIT" 2 "COME"

The “Stay” command is useful in a variety of situations. Unfortunately, it is sometimes one of the most difficult commands to teach your dog. Dogs do not like to sit still for very long, so teaching them to stay in one place can definitely test their patience. During the training for this command, it is usually successful by rewarding them for ANY amount of time they remain in the “Stay” position. Even if they only stay for a few seconds, reward them with a treat and lots of verbal praise. Gradually extending the amount of time they will stay (followed by rewards) will help you successfully accomplish them learning the stay command. You will find this command to be extremely useful in your everyday life with your pup. It can keep them from bolting out of an open door, darting out into traffic, or accidently jumping on an invited guest. It will help keep them controlled in a variety of social settings, as well as potentially dangerous ones.

3 "STAY"

The “Drop It/Leave It” command may not seem all that important, but it actually is! Curious dogs LOVE to pick up all kinds of interesting things they find. Candy wrappers, banana peels, mysterious dog poop, and all kinds of other unidentifiable items are definitely on their list of treasures to bring home! Unfortunately, many of these “treasures” can be dangerous to your dog’s health. Items found along your walking route may have been sprayed with poisonous weed killer or insecticides that could potentially harm your dog. The “drop it” command will be extremely useful when you see them with anything you don’t want them to have, including one of your brand-new shoes they found in the bedroom!

"DROP IT" 5 "LOOK"

The "Look/Watch Me" command is probably the most helpful tool you may teach your dog in conjunction with the other words you are teaching him. Essentially, you are telling your dog that you need his attention right now. You need him to focus on you for further instructions. This command will alert your dog to give you one hundred percent of his attention and ignore any other distractions. It is an important precursor for him to await further commands.

When training your dog to obey any of these commands, it is important to pair treat rewards with verbal rewards. You may not always have treats with you, but you can always exuberantly reward your pup with kind words. Sometimes the pleasure expressed with your appreciative words are all that they need.

Pawsitively Seniors is designed for low-income seniors whose quality of life would be enhanced as a result of the many positive effects of pet ownership. By matching senior or special needs cats with senior people this program is a mutual benefit for all.

The Pawsitively Seniors program includes:

• Free food and litter delivered on a regular schedule, if needed

• Free medical care from a program approved veterinarian, including prescribed medication

• Free transportation to and from a participating Vet

• Monthly visits from PALnv to check on the cat and senior SIGN

Low-income seniors are defined as 60 and over with an income of $1,800 per month or less.

Senior cats are defined as 8 years and older, who have been spayed/neutered and are current on vaccinations with general good health. Special needs cats are those who have manageable behavioral or medical issues.

The fun of you learning how to train your dog and the close bond this will create!

OBEDIENCE AND RALLY CLASSES:

Partnerships with good intentions can’t help but result in great outcomes. When Animal Protection Affiliates reached out to their friends, Pet Partners of Las Vegas/Love Dog Adventures, to inquire if they would be interested in visiting the Pahrump Disability Outreach Program, they agreed and a visit was coordinated. Once landing was made, it was all about the furry rock stars, Charlie, Luci and Xoco (Shih Tzu mix, Great Dane, and Mexican Hairless, respectively). They wrapped themselves around hearts ahead of Valentine’s Day.

Sue Grundfest, credited with creating Love Dog Adventures which eventually became a Pet Partners community partner, is dedicated to inspiring physical and emotional healing through the use of interactive animal-assisted therapy and community education. Her group of committed volunteers and their therapy animals have made countless visits to an assortment of schools, hospitals, companies and other facilities over the years, leaving attendees feeling so much better after interacting with the animals. There is something magical about congregating with animals – it connects hearts.

Nye County Captain David Boruchowitz established the Pahrump Disability Outreach Program, whose mission is to provide a support group for special needs children and their families in the community.

Animal Protection Affiliates seeks to partner with others in their ongoing effort to promote a more humane coexistence among humans and animals, making this a winning collaboration all around.

Be Your Dog’s BEST FRIEND and Bring More Joy To Their Day!

Many of us pet owners have had the privilege of owning two or more dogs at one time. It’s the perfect situation as your pups have playmates when you are not around, and when you are home, the more the merrier!

However, just because they have each other, or in other cases when there is only a single dog in the home, they still look to you to be their very best friend!

Of course, we know by now how to snuggle and groom them. But how do we go the extra mile to become our dog’s companion?

The truth is they are going to love us no matter what. They adore us regardless of how much time we spend with them, but…if we could bring even more joy to their day, it’s totally worth it for both them and us!

So, how do we do this? Different dogs have different needs and wants. Some are satisfied going for one long walk. Others would rather a few short walks throughout the day. Then there are some who have discovered the luxury of going for a car ride and exploring new things. The adventurous types, the cuddle types, the ball player, or the ball hoarder! Some like hiking, others love swimming.

The trick is to find out which personality type your dog possesses and then treat them to it whenever possible.

With multiple dogs who have different wants, this might not be as easy but it still doable. They learn to adapt to each other and “go along for the ride” so to speak and do whatever the other one wants (most of the time).

When you have one dog, it becomes a lot easier.

For instance, my dogs Ginger and Lola loved to walk multiple times each day. Or at least I thought they did. When Ginger passed away, I noticed it was really Ginger who loved her multiple walks and Lola just kind of went along with it. She wasn’t as enthusiastic after Ginger had made her journey to the rainbow bridge. However, I still wanted to make sure she got exercise. I felt part of her reluctance to

walk was due to a little depression, so to help cope with Lola’s grief, I decided to get her out of the house more often and discovered she absolutely loved the car. Then I discovered she loved the playground- including playing on the jungle gyms. In addition, she loved searching for tennis balls in the bushes. Not that she likes to fetch…she just loves finding them!

Whenever I get the time, I take her to new places to see if she likes it. The water, not so much. Hiking- yes please! Of course, it’s trial and error but each road trip winds up being fun for her and for me, regardless of what we do. I’ve discovered stores that allow dogs and places that don’t.

We all know dogs are man’s best friend (and women’s too) but there is nothing easier than being their best friend as well.

This holds true for dogs of all ages. They don’t need to be active to have fun if they prefer to be at home, or their age doesn’t enable them to be as adventurous. You can find activities at home that they like, such as getting them their favorite toys and sitting with them while they play with them. I’ve even heard some people say their pet loves television! Try new things and see what your pup responds too. They may simply enjoy a “spa hour” each day consisting of brushing their coat. Even training a dog of any age is a bonding experience and they do feel a sense of pride when they accomplish a new trick!

Being a dog’s best friend is an honor and spending time with them never seems like a chore. It’s the perfect way to take a break from every day monotony and spend time with someone who only wants to receive and give love the best way they know how! Who knows? You might even find yourself buying “Best Friends” T-shirts!

A number of years ago we settled in Las Vegas to enjoy the weather, lower cost of living and semi-retirement. We purchased a home in 2015, and though in our 60s and with trepidation, since neither of us had ever had a pet before, we decided a dog would be a great way to “complete” our new domain.

We browsed through a copy of “Pet Scene” and saw a photo of a Chihuahua named “Celeste.” We instantly loved her amazing and expressive face. We immediately went to the Nevada SPCA. We were prepared with a “backup” plan if Celeste was no longer available. She was available. The staff brought her outside about 50 feet away from us. They said they wanted to see if she was attracted to us. Celeste ran from the door directly to us and jumped in our laps. We immediately fell in love with her. We petted her and talked to her and she turned her head to stare us in the eye as if she understood every word. The deal was done!

We noticed she was on the thin side and she had a scar on her lower lip. We also noticed that when we reached out to pet her, she cowered slightly. We asked about those things and they would only tell us that her previous owner brought her to the shelter because he thought she was “too needy.” She was already 5 years old, but being a mature dog, she needed no house or crate training. She also didn’t seem to be a dog that barked at everything she didn’t understand, which was something we were concerned about.

A Perfect Match!

So, after understanding how to feed and care for her, we brought her home. She was terrified of being left alone. However, we gave her an abundance of love and she has returned that in spades. She sleeps soundly and quietly on her side of the bed at night and during the day she loves to sit in her special place on the back of the sofa in a 3rd story window. For hours she watches cars, joggers, and airplanes, which she anxiously monitors daily. She also has taken over the sofa when we are home and when we are out, she dutifully sleeps in a bed by the garage door waiting for us to return. Nothing is better than coming home to Celeste, who greets us with her funny little smile and big black eyes.

Celeste makes us happy that we care for someone other than ourselves. She is another dimension that has been added to our lives. When one of us isn’t home for some reason, Celeste is the best company we could ever ask for.

For the past eight years, Celeste has been the most amazing, sweetest, and most loving dog a new pet owner could have. She will turn 13 in June. She is healthy and thriving in her “forever home” with us and we couldn’t have been happier that we made the decision to share our lives with her.

Make Your Home CLEANER GREENER AND SAFER

You’re just spritzing a little into the air to eliminate the fishy, doggy, and kitty smells. But have you thought that it’s landing on your floors, counters, and any dishware around? Even though your room smells clean and fresh, you’re emitting volatile chemicals into the air. To make a freshening spray without essential oil, as they can be toxic to cats and birds, add vanilla extract to alcohol and water. Simply soaking fragrant herbs in alcohol can infuse the liquid with a sweet scent. You can also infuse herbs and plants into the water before mixing them with alcohol for a fragrance with less potency. If you don’t like the smell of alcohol, dissolve one teaspoon of baking soda in two cups of hot water; add one teaspoon of lemon juice. Pour the solution into a spray bottle and spray as you would an air freshener.

AIR FRESHENERS

SPOT CLEAN FLOORS Your pets walk on them and lick their paws. As with any cleaning product, mild skin irritation or stomach upset may occur if pets walk through a still-wet floor or lick any spilled solution. A better alternative is good old water and vinegar.

CARPET FRESH I feel powder carpet fresheners shouldn’t be used. They get into your fibers which isn’t good for your carpet or pets. If anything, use baking soda, as it’s at least safer for you and Mollie.

POOP PATROL We all wish our pets could learn to use the toilet like some of those we see on YouTube, but it’s not a reality. So, picking up poop is a daily routine. If not picked up, it pollutes the environment, plus you have to watch for those little ones who should be in Poop Anon for cleaning it up for you. Use paper bags or biodegradable ones. If you’re not bringing your own bag to the store, make the plastic bags do double duty.

BE WATER SMART When refreshing the water bowl daily, use it in your garden instead of dumping it down the drain. Our climate is extremely dry and we’re experiencing drought conditions; plants won’t mind if Max shares his water with them.

LAUNDRY DETERGENT

It’s easy to assume that choosing a laundry detergent isn’t that important because the rinse cycle rinses it away. But there is a residue left behind on clothes and pet blankets that can be harmful to your pet, especially those that chew on their bedding. Avoid detergents with toxic ingredients; instead, try baking soda or distilled white vinegar.

TOY TIME

Pups can go through toys like snacks, and that can be expensive. So, when buying them, consider eco-friendly toys or make them yourself. I’ve found ones made of recycled materials that are no more than some of the best-selling toys. If you have time to make them, use recycled fleece to make braided pull toys. If your pup likes crinkling sounds, wrap a water bottle in a t-shirt. There are also cute plush toys where you can put the bottle inside. Make sure to take the cap off, and as with any toy, keep an eye on them when playing.

DONATE Keeping items out of landfills is a green move. Contact your local animal shelters and rescues to see what things they need.

RECYCLE Did you know some manufacturers have recycling programs where you can send the toy back for repurposing once Maya tires of it? Give it a try and see if they have any toys your little one may like.

Going cleaner and greener doesn’t have to be complicated. Just change a few habits and start using eco-friendly products to show your love for our planet and pets.

It’s National Pet First Aid Awareness Month: Keep Your Pet Safe

Have you considered renaming your dog “No, stop! Don’t eat that?” Has your kitty taken to not only playing with yarn but also consuming it? Does your dog use your living room like a parkour gym?

April is National Pet First Aid Awareness Month and if you’ve had a furry child for more than a minute, you’ve probably already experienced some sort of medical emergency. The world is a dangerous place when you walk on all fours and nibble on anything you can get your paws on. Luckily, your pets have you, and with a little preparation and knowledge, you can act quickly and potentially save your fur baby’s life.

Before we get to that, let’s look at some ways you can avoid certain emergencies altogether.

PREVENTION

Exercising a bit of caution with your pets could help avoid many potential emergencies. Household items and human foods may look like tasty treats to your animals but could be toxic or cause obstructions if swallowed. This can include:

» Cleaning supplies

» Medications

» Plants

» Small toys

» Craft supplies

» Shoes and clothing

» Hygiene products

» And anything else that might be accessible to your pet

Make sure these items are behind closed doors and out of the way of prying paws. If you do suspect your pet has ingested something (vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, lack of appetite, etc.), call your vet, an emergency veterinary hospital, or a poison control hotline.

Making sure that your pet is on a leash whenever you leave the house (and controlled by someone who can handle them in an emergency) can lessen the chance of fights, getting hit by a car, and eating something random off the street. Checking the weather before you head out for a walk can help prevent heat and cold-related injuries.

PREPARATION

If the unthinkable happens, you want to be as prepared as possible. This looks like:

 Knowing the hours your vet is open and the closest emergency hospital.

 Downloading the ASPCA mobile app or having their Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) number handy (888) 426-4435. The APCC is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. However, please note that they will ask you for a credit card to pay for the consultation. Have one handy so you don’t waste any time.

Ž Having a well-stocked pet first aid kit.

EDUCATION

There are circumstances where you’ll be able to get your pet to a vet to seek medical attention. However, there are also times when you’ll need to react in the moment to stabilize your pet and save their life. Pet first aid and CPR classes are affordable and relatively easy to find. You can take an online course through the Red Cross, or look for inperson, hands-on classes like Pet Emergency Education.

If your pet is choking, stops breathing, is suffering from hypothermia, gets bitten or attacked, sustains an injury while hiking, etc. you’ll want to be armed with the tools and knowledge to treat them before you transport them to a vet.

No one likes to think about the potential of their pet getting sick or injured. However, with a little bit of prevention, preparation, and education, you can ensure that if an emergency strikes, you’ll be ready.

Estate Planning

Estate planning is important for both individuals and pets. Proper planning can literally save a pet’s life.

Per Nevada law, Wills do not avoid probate; only well drafted and funded trusts will avoid probate. There are also issues with guardianship if an individual does not have properly drafted documents in place before they become legally incompetent.

In a well drafted trust an individual can also plan for the care of their pet in the event of the death or disability of the individual owner via a “pet trust”, which is included in the individuals revocable living trust. Nevada law does not allow provisions for your pet in a Will.

I am often asked if an individual can have an agreement with the neighbor to take their pets. Under Nevada law, pets are considered property so an Animal Control officer will not release the pets to the neighbor because the agency has no more authority to transfer ownership of a person’s pets than it does of a person’s television set.

When you set up an estate plan with provisions for your pets you can do all kinds of things for your pet like allow your pet to live in your house for the remainder of their life, regulate veterinary care, provide for food, grooming, dental cleanings and daycare.

Estate planning is important for all animals. Some animals live to be 100 years old, like birds and desert tortoises, some animals are very large, require a lot of room and are expensive to care for, like horses and some animals have known current or potential future medical problems. Many pet owners want to ensure there is money for the pet’s future needs.

It is imperative that planning be done by an attorney who is well versed in estate planning for pets because it can literally be a matter of life and death for your pet. You also have to be very careful about leaving money outright to an individual as a “thank you” for taking your pet because once the individual has your money and your pet they can take the pet to the vet and have them put to sleep or drop them off at a local shelter and keep your money.

Planned Giving

There are a lot of great options for those individuals who would like to help animals by leaving money to an animal charity. A few options are leaving an outright distribution under the terms of the individuals trust or naming a charity as a beneficiary of an asset.

There are animal charities that have thrift stores so an individual can also leave personal property to the charity for the items to be sold by the charity.

Sweet, cute, loads of personality…did you immediately think of a dog? Maybe a cat? How about a FISH?! No?? Well, you’d be surprised at just how sweet, cute, sassy, spunky, silly, loving, and kind of ‘cuddly’ (yes cuddly) a fish can be. I’m talking specifically about Betta Splendens, aka Siamese Fighting Fish, and I’d love to share some experiences that my husband and I have had with our four sweet little finbabies, Sunburst, Nite Ryda, Mushu, and Romeo.

We also have several other aquatic critters who occasionally make cameo appearances throughout these stories – three neon tetras, four golden white cloud mountain minnows, two mystery snails, and two nerite snails.

The beginning of our ‘obsession’: After talking about it for literally years (I can be somewhat indecisive), I finally decided it was time to adopt a Betta. At our local fish store, I absolutely fell in love with not one, but two beautiful Bettas, Sunburst and Nite Ryda. We hadn’t planned on getting two Bettas but once I saw their grumpy, frowny mouths, and they looked at me with their sweet little fishy puppy eyes, I couldn’t resist. I’d been bitten by the Betta ‘bug’. Sunburst had a gorgeous buttery yellow body with bright reddish-magenta fins and Nite Ryda was almost charcoal black with golden fins. They were like night and day (yes, puns totally intended) in both looks and personality, and we were immediately smitten.

We rushed out and picked up a divided tank (the first of WAY TOO MANY tanks) to keep them apart, since male Bettas are solitary creatures who will fight and can seriously injury each other if they’re kept in the same tank with another male. They were such little, curious boys, swimming around, exploring their new home.

And talk about personality! Boy were these little guys just full of it!!

Sunburst was always more on the shy, cautious side, preferring to stay in the shadows and observing. But Nite Ryda is our show-off. He swims up and ‘waves’ at us with his little pectoral fins like ‘jazz hands’. Bettas are super smart too. In no time, they both recognized their names and had ‘learned’ our routine, eagerly swimming to the top of their tanks whenever it was feeding time. Sunburst was a gentle boy who waited patiently for his food, but Nite Ryda would get so excited that he couldn’t contain himself. He’d wiggle-dance all around his tank and CRUNCH his pellets so ferociously that we could actually hear it. It wasn’t long before we realized that these little ones also craved human interaction. Nite Ryda even enjoys being ‘petted’. Whenever we work in his tank, cleaning or rearranging, he swims up and nudges our fingers until we gently stroke him, and then he happily swims away.

March and April signal the end of winter and beginning of spring. April is a special month for another reason, too. The ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Animal Cruelty) has designated April as Prevention of Animal Cruelty Month. Those who care about animals are acquainted with animals like Buddy and their stories.

Looking Out for Buddy

Buddy shivers outside during cold months. In hot weather, he looks for water but often his dish is dry. You may see a frightened creature like Buddy hiding under a bush. You can’t walk up to him because he may bite to protect himself or run in front of a car if he has no leash.

There are pets like Buddy left outdoors, neglected, or chained in someone’s backyard. His chain keeps him from enough food, water, and warmth to be healthy. Buddy, whether young or old, still needs nourishment, love, and attention. If you see a pet treated like Buddy, tell an adult you trust. Write down details to give to the police or animal rescue workers.

What Can You Do?

Pets can’t be shoved in closets like stuffed animals or tossed outside till you want to play. Living creatures need food, water, cleaning, training, exercise, and love to thrive. If you’re not ready to give your time, effort, and kindness, wait before owning for a pet.

Unforeseen Life Situations

Sometimes humans get ill or so old they can no longer care for their pets. When that happens, people must choose to give them up or find help to care for them. You and your family can volunteer at an older person’s home or animal shelter. At a shelter, you can learn to take care of pets while helping them acquire skills to get adopted! You’ll need your parents’ permission, so ask first!

One day you might foster. Fostering is caring for an animal as if it belonged to you. It is not forever. When permanent owners take a pet like Buddy home which you fostered, you will have made a difference. We will always be grateful to the people who rescued and fostered our dog, Tiger, until we adopted him. He clearly had behaviors that hinted at his abusive background, but with compassion and time, he grew to trust again. Tiger became a dear companion and remains in our hearts. That’s our story. What story will you create?
