If you’re like most Americans making a move, the odds are good that you aren’t moving too far from home. That’s one of the takeaways from a recent survey conducted by the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR).

Every year, millions of Americans move out of their current home and into a new one.

In a recent survey of NAR members, the association found that just over one in three movers were actually moving to a different city or state. The remaining 63% of people moving last year in the U.S. were settling somewhere within the same city or in the same state where they were already living.

Nearly 30% of the time, their destination was determined by a desire to be closer to friends and family. Another roughly 20% of all movers wanted more home for the money – which was especially true of people in the West, NAR reported. Other movers cited lower taxes as their main motivation to move. That was especially common for those living in or moving to the South.

In the Northeast, the motivation for 22% of all movers was to be closer to their jobs. Also in that part of the country, 51% of all respondents worked at least partly in the office, compared to 39% in the Midwest, 37% in the South, and 30% in the West –where 48% worked remotely.

Nationally, the location of their job only mattered to 37% of movers. And only 2% moved due to their office having returnto-work policies.

Those relocating to the South and West were most likely to be moving from a different state, while movers in the Northeast were most likely moving within the same state.

DON’T MOVE TOO FAR FROM HOME

The kinds of homes movers were looking for often varied by location. Almost half (46%) of all movers who landed in the Midwest were looking for outdoor space, though it was also important for people heading to or remaining in the South, West and Northeast.

In the Northeast (36%) and West (34%), the main goal was more likely to be a desire for more space inside the home.

A better work commute was also much more important in the Northeast than it was in other regions, as was access to highways and to public transit.

In each region, a quiet area and more walkable neighborhood amenities ranked third and fourth in the criteria movers were considering. A safe place with low crime was important for 16% of all respondents.

“Recent clients generally moved to a similar type of area (i.e. from one suburban area to another). However, those moving from central city/urban areas (41%) and resort areas (44%) most often moved to a suburban area,” the report said.

Three out of four repeat buyers sold their current home when buying a new one, but 20% held on to it for an investment, rental or vacation property. While the vast majority made a permanent move to the new location, 6% split their time between locations. And 18% moved back to an area where they previously lived. That was especially common for people who moved to the Midwest or Western regions.

Jessica Lautz, NAR deputy chief economist and vice president of research, was quoted about this in a recent story in GlobeSt. com, saying that “this migration flow will likely continue as retirees and remote workers relocate.”

Of course, such information is especially relevant here in Southern Nevada, where we continue to be a popular destination for people moving here from other states – especially from California.
