Father Baker Legacy Award

PAUL BAUER, THOMAS BEECHER, AND CHRISTOPHER JACOBS FOUNDERS OF THE BISON CHILDREN’S SCHOLARSHIP FUND Over twenty-eight years ago, Paul, Tom and Chris, had a vision, “Give Families a Choice and Children a Chance.” Determined that families should be able to choose the school that best fits their child’s needs regardless of their income or zip code, the BISON Children’s Scholarship Fund was created. Since its inception, BISON has expanded from its initial K-8 city of Buffalo program to now helping students in kindergarten through high school with scholarships throughout the eight counties of WNY. With a proven track record of a 99% high school graduation rate, BISON works with over 80 private schools, has awarded over 39,000 scholarships and boasts a private investment of $40.7 million since its inception. Through its partnership with the Children’s Scholarship Fund in New York City, donated dollars are further leveraged to help even more students attend private schools that best fit their needs. BISON believes that an educated community provides stability and productivity to its members. Without the steadfast dedication of its founders, who are all still active Board members of the Fund, BISON would not be able to continue to provide private school options to the nearly 1,900 BISON scholars the 2022-23 school year. It is an honor for OLV to present the 2022 Father Baker Service to Youth award to Paul D. Bauer, Thomas R. Beecher, Jr. and Representative Christopher L. Jacobs.

Father Baker History The OLV Institutions are the evolution of a charitable venture begun by the Diocese of Buffalo in the 1850’s as the Limestone Hill Institutions, which included a parish, an orphanage, and a protectory for young boys. Stretched thin by overwhelming demand, finances quickly became a major concern and within a few short years, the Institutions fell deep into debt. Upon his arrival in February of 1882, the Institutions’ new superintendent, Father Nelson Baker, learned of a debt which exceeded $56,000. Immediately, the former businessman emptied his personal savings and used his good name to keep creditors at bay. Still, the humble priest knew a long-term solution. Father Baker, who had begun his lifelong devotion to Our Lady of Victory after a trip to the Basilica of Notre Dame des Victoires in Paris in 1874, turned to his patroness for help. His prayers were answered through the founding of the Association of Our Lady of Victory. Father Baker sent letters throughout the country asking the faithful for assistance with the dependent children in his care by joining the Association for 25 cents a year. Very quickly, his ingenious idea caught on, the debts were paid in full and the Institutions were poised to grow. By the turn of the century, the number of children receiving care at the Institutions had more than tripled, and the Orphanage and Protectory were expanded. In 1908, the Infant Home was added, followed by a Maternity and General Hospital. In 1926, the glorious Our Lady of - 16 -

Victory National Shrine and Basilica was finished and dedicated. It was the crowning jewel of Father Baker’s “City of Charity.” The Association of Our Lady of Victory, Father Baker’s pioneering fundraising program, grew into OLV Homes of Charity, now known as OLV Charities (OLVC). Funds raised by OLVC support OLV Human Services (formerly Baker Victory Services) and OLV National Shrine & Basilica. In addition, the organization provides important business functions such as finance, information technology, facilities and marketing to its mission partners. Father Baker passed away in 1936, but his legacy of caring has continued, and his example of faith and charity continues to inspire and move people worldwide. His Cause for Canonization, first begun in 1987, has seen him named Servant of God by Pope John Paul II in 1987, and, most recently, Venerable by Pope Benedict XVI in 2011. It is hoped that soon a miracle will be found to elevate Father Baker to Blessed.

Do you know all that OLV does in WNY? CONTINUING FATHER BAKER’S LEGACY OF CARING OLV Human Services is dedicated to fostering the highest possible quality of life and personal achievement by partnering with children, adults, their families and the WNY community through a diverse array of social, health and human services. In the spirit of Fr. Nelson Baker, who dedicated his life to those in need, we serve approximately 10,000 – 12,000 people each year.

TRAUMA INFORMED CARE OLV Human Services is committed to providing Trauma Informed Care, which creates safety, resiliency, and healing for individuals that have experienced trauma. It is our mission to ensure that every contact an individual has with someone at our organization will create a sense of safety and trust. We believe that the primary agent of change is a healing relationship for those we serve and for those who serve.

CLINICAL SERVICES The Baker Victory Dental Center serves everyone from toddlers to senior citizens. In addition to serving the general dental needs of the community, our diverse and friendly staff specializes in treating patients with complicated needs, such as dental phobia, complex medical histories, people with forms of mental illness and behavioral problems, and people with special needs. The Outpatient Mental Health Clinic provides counseling and medication management for children and adults. Licensed clinicians provide high quality care by giving people the tools and resources needed for mental health and wellness.

challenges in a trauma-sensitive environment that encourages growth, safety, responsibility, and respectful learning. Within all these programs, the Education Division at OLV Human Services offers a distinct and unique emphasis upon work-based or experiential learning. It is our goal to provide all students with the skills they need to be successful not only in the classroom, but also in life.

HOME AND COMMUNITY BASED SERVICES OLVHS Home and Community Based programs create brighter futures for children, adolescents, and families, by providing high-quality services where and when they are needed. Whether on evenings or weekends, in homes or at work, dedicated staff members provide unconditional support and help families through their most challenging and vulnerable times. Through a wide array of supports, we deliver timely and accessible behavioral health services designed to empower individuals, strengthen family units, and promote permanency to ensure the safety and well-being of children.

RESIDENTIAL SERVICES OLVHS offers a variety of residential programs, providing a home-like setting for individuals in our care. The Residential Treatment Facility is an inpatient treatment program that provides care for youth, ages 12-21, with interpersonal, emotional, psychiatric, social, family, or educational issues. Our Intensive Treatment Program is the first and only one of its kind in the State of New York. The Intensive Treatment Program serves youth between the ages of 12-17, that have Autism Spectrum Disorder and/or Intellectual Disability Disorder in addition to a mental health diagnosis. OLV Human Services also houses an emergency foster care program, where children, who are removed from their homes, are provided immediate safety and support. Finally, our Individualized Residential Alternatives provide 24-hour staff oversight and supervision for individuals

with developmental disabilities, with an emphasis on helping residents develop independent living skills and community inclusion.

EMPLOYMENT SERVICES The Employment Programs at OLV Human Services provide specialized supports to job-seekers with barriers to employment. From vocational assessment to employment follow-along support, our team of providers works with participants at all stages of their career path. Services are provided in schools, in the community, and in the employment or post-secondary setting, consistent with a person-centered and trauma-informed approach.

CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE (CLI) The Christian Leadership Institute (CLI) was created over 40 years ago with the purpose of empowering young people to become leaders in their community and church. The Diocese of Buffalo was the second diocese in the nation to host CLI and offered it every year until 2020. CLI is an exciting, week-long training program designed for high school sophomores who are interested in becoming a leader in their high school or parish. During the summer of 2022, OLV Charities revitalized and re-instituted CLI, honoring its history and importance in WNY and ensuring it remains an opportunity for youth.

CAMP TURNER OLV Charities acquired Camp Turner to support its mission to provide unparalleled recreational and spiritual opportunities for youth - a mission certainly close to the heart of our founder, Father Nelson Baker. Camp Turner resides in beautiful Allegany State Park and continues the long-standing mission to “Honor God in the Children Confided to Our Care.” Camp Turner offers year-round use of its facilities, but welcomes boys and girls ages 7 to 16 for camp in the summer months. Camp Turner activities include hiking, swimming, horseback riding, archery, sports, arts & crafts, and making new friends in a safe environment. Families and campers are welcome regardless of their religious affiliation.

Grateful for the vision and commitment of our Founders, Paul, Tom and Chris. Our founders saw a need in WNY and have worked tirelessly for 28 years to solve it. Poor performing public schools and families who were trapped in schools that didn’t meet the needs of their children brought about the need for BISON. We believe exceptional education shouldn’t just be for the most fortunate students, so we give families a choice with scholarships to help K-12 students attend private schools like OLV. To learn more about how you can make a difference, contact Amy Popadick at (716) 854-0869 or apopadick@bisonfund.com.

Baker + Bakery = In 2020, two of WNY’s most beloved institutions met when OLV Human Services, Father Baker’s legacy of caring, purchased Mazurek’s Bakery. The partnership provides real-life work experiences to young adults with behavioral concerns, mental-health diagnoses, and developmental disabilities, focused on food services and small-business ownership. To learn more or to order some of our legendary baked goods, stop by 543 South Park Avenue, call 853-7833 or check out www.mazureksbakery.com!

Lord, you gave us Your servant Nelson Baker as an example of service to the poor, homeless, and young. By Father Baker’s ardent concern for those in need, inflame our hearts and lives with compassion for the poor, justice for the oppressed, hope for the troubled, and courage to those in doubt. We pray through the intercession of Our Lady of Victory, if it be Your will, that Your servant, Nelson Baker, may one day be canonized. Amen.
