As lifelong residents of Buffalo, we have seen first-hand the amazing work of OLV Charities in providing support to thousands of children, family and individuals during difficult times in their lives. Based on this year’s theme, “Everybody Outdoors!,” the auction features over 70 items with packages for kids, families, sports enthusiasts and lovers of the great outdoorsand a few special items for those not so enthralled with nature. How to Bid at our Auction Each bidder must create an online account to bid. To create your account, browse to victorynite.org and choose “SIGN IN” from the upper right corner. To create an account, you will need to provide a valid mobile number, email, mailing address, and first and last name. You can also create an account on your mobile device by texting “victorynite” to 243725. Once you have an account, click SIGN IN in the upper right corner and login to your bidding account. Find auction items by clicking on “Browse Items > All Items” in the menu or by using the search bar to find a specific item. To bid, select the item and click on “BID.” Once you confirm your bid, you will be prompted for a Max Bid. OLV Charities’ bidding platform will automatically bid on your behalf up to your Max Bid amount using the bid increments provided so you don’t have to watch the item. You may also choose to watch items and not input a Max Bid Amount. In either case, you will receive text messages when you have been outbid to the mobile number provided when creating your account. Father Baker Institutions History The Our Lady of Victory Institutions are the evolution of a charitable venture begun by the Diocese of Buffalo in the 1850s as the Limestone Hill Institutions, which included a parish, an orphanage, and a protectory for young boys. Stretched thin by overwhelming demand, finances quickly became a major concern and within a few short years, the Institutions fell deep into debt. Upon his arrival in February of 1882, the Institutions’ new superintendent, Father Nelson Baker, learned of a debt which exceeded $56,000. Immediately, the former businessman emptied his personal savings and used his good name to keep creditors at bay. Still, the humble priest knew a long-term solution was needed if their work was to continue. Father Baker, who had begun his lifelong devotion to Our Lady of Victory after a trip to the Basilica of Notre Dame des Victoires in Paris in 1874, turned to his patroness for help. His prayers were answered through the founding of the Association of Our Lady of Victory. Father Baker sent letters throughout the country asking the postmasters for names of Catholic women in their area and after assembling a substantial list, wrote directly to the faithful for assistance with the dependent children in his care asking them to join the Association for 25 cents a year. Very quickly, his ingenious idea caught on, the debts were paid in full and the Institutions were poised to grow. By the turn of the century, the number of children receiving care at the Institutions had more than tripled, and the Orphanage and Protectory were expanded. In 1908, the Infant Home was added, followed by a Maternity and General Hospital. OLV Victory Nite • 25

Father Baker Institutions History In 1921, the cornerstone was laid for the glorious Our Lady of Victory National Shrine and Basilica, which was finished and dedicated in May 1926, and represented the crowning jewel of Father Baker’s “City of Charity.” The Association of Our Lady of Victory, Father Baker’s pioneering fundraising program, grew into the OLV Homes of Charity and is now known as OLV Charities, offering numerous opportunities for spiritual growth and charitable giving. Funds raised by OLV Charities goes to support the other arms of the Institutions, OLV Human Services (formerly Baker Victory Services) and OLV National Shrine and Basilica. Our support of OLV Human Services provides critically-needed funding that allows Father Baker’s legacy of caring to continue. Father Baker passed away in 1936, but his legacy of caring has continued, and his example of faith and charity continues to inspire and move people worldwide. His Cause for Canonization, first begun in 1987, has seen him named Servant of God by Pope John Paul II in 1987, and, most recently, Venerable by Pope Benedict XVI in 2011. It is hoped that soon a miracle will be found to elevate Father Baker to Blessed. Since Father Baker, few men have been responsible for the stewardship of his City of Charity. Father Thomas Hines was the first pastor, then Father Baker, who served from 1882 until his death in 1936. Msgr. Joseph E. Maguire took over after Father Baker’s death until 1971, then Rev. Msgr. Robert E. Murphy who served until 1979, then Msgr. Robert C. Wurtz, who served from 1979 until 2006, followed by Rev. Msgr. Paul J.E. Burkard, who served from 2006 until he retired in 2019 and currently Rev. Msgr. David G. LiPuma. OLV Victory Nite • 27

Do you know all that OLV Human Services (formerly Baker Victory Services) does in Western New York?
RESIDENTIAL PROGRAMS FOR ADOLESCENTS Residential Treatment Facility Provided through the NYS Office of Mental Health, OLVHS’ Residential Treatment Facility offers specialized, around-the-clock care for males and females ages 12 to 21 whose needs are such that they must be placed outside the home. These residents are treated by a multi-disciplinary team for problems due to interpersonal, emotional, psychiatric, social, family or educational issues. The Intensive Treatment Program is for dually diagnosed youth from 12 to 18 years of age who have been diagnosed with autism and/or intellectual disability and also have a co-occurring mental health diagnosis. Focus is on development of communication skills, selfregulation skills, and vocational/work-based learning. This dual-program provides discharge planning and transition services to facilitate residents’ smooth transition back into the community.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING Early Childhood Programs The OLVHS Early Childhood Programs were founded in 1971 and follow a long tradition of providing the highest level of care to all members of the community. With two locations - at Monarch on Ridge Road in Lackawanna and at St. John’s Parkside in South Buffalo - the Early Childhood Programs are available to all children from birth through five years old. Specialized programming is available for children facing educational challenges or other developmental disabilities.
School-Age Programs OLVHS students are welcomed by an educational setting that is safe and productive. Within this environment, staff members work to build students’ confidence and skill sets in the areas of independence, mastery, generosity and belonging. Programming is available to children and adolescents between 5 and 21 years of age and is certified by the New York State Education Department.

VOCATIONAL SERVICES The Work Appreciation for Youth (WAY) Program The WAY program offers several transition services designed to help young people develop the skills necessary for a successful schoolto-adult transition. We provide coordinated activities that prepare students ages 14 to 21 that may include work, post-secondary education, independent living or vocational training programs. These programs are tailored and matched to each student’s specific needs, preferences and interests.
Mazurek’s Bakery is a new addition for OLVHS in 2020 and
is a for-profit subsidiary of OLVHS offering work based learning opportunities for our youth while serving the public with amazing breads and baked goods.
CHILDREN HOME AND COMMUNITY BASED SERVICES OLV Human Services Children Home and Community Based Services provides an array of services to Medicaid eligible children and families to prevent onset or progression of behavioral health conditions. Our goal is to identify need early and prevent the need for further restrictive services while allowing the children to remain in their current home.

FOSTER CARE, PREVENTIVE, AND DENTAL SERVICES Foster Care Some children cannot live with their parents due to emotional and/ or behavioral problems, or their parents’ inability to function as caregivers. OLVHS offers the best place for these young people to be - in a family, within a community and man environment where they can receive the loving attention they need: OLVHS provides a safe, temporary place for children until they can be reunited with their birth family, a relative, or be adopted. OLVHS also operates one cottage for emergency foster care for up to 13 children ages birth to age 18.
Community-Based Preventive & Wraparound Services Community Based Preventive and Wraparound Services care for families referred to OLVHS by the Erie County Department of Social Services. These families may be experiencing difficulties related to poor parenting, interpersonal problems, educational issues, alcoholism, drug abuse, violence, or sexual abuse. The goals of the programs are to preserve the family unit, avoiding placement of a child outside of the home. This is done by utilizing a home-based approach to care, offering a variety of intervention methods.

Baker Victory Dental Center The Dental Center offers a wide variety of services to both the residents OLVHS and the general community. The state-of-the-art complex provides high-quality, convenient, affordable and compassionate care to 7,000 patients annually, including 3,400 challenged individuals who require adaptive dental care.

SERVICES FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES Adult Residential Programs OLVHS provides a number of living opportunities designed specifically for individuals (of all ages) who have mild-to-profound developmental delays, multiple physical disabilities, specialized medical needs, dual diagnosis and/or dementia. All residents benefit from an individualized plan of services that may include: Intensive Medical Services, Nursing Supports, Therapy Services, Apartment Living, Person-Centered Planning and Supports, Behavioral Supports, Wellness and Nutrition Training, and Dementia/Memory Care.
Medicaid Service Coordination Often, individuals whose daily living activities are hindered by their disabilities - those that may be affected by autism, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, neurological impairments, or traumatic brain injury - require a variety of specialized community services. OLVHS’ Medicaid Service Coordinators work to provide a link between family members and these important resources.
