P
unxsutawney is having its cake and eating it, too. The Lady Chucks won the school’s first-ever PIAA softball championship behind the pitching and hitting of Kylee Lingenfelter, 2-0, over District 11 champion Bethlehem Catholic in the 4A title game Friday afternoon at Beard Field at the Nittany Lion Softball Park on the campus of Penn State University. “One of the first things I said to the girls when we were talking is that everybody says that getting here, getting this far, win or lose, is icing on the cake, Punxsutawney manager Alan Pifer said. “I said, ‘Girls, I want to have my cake and eat it, too.’ The Lady Chucks gave their long-time manager his wish by doing it the way they have done it for four years while winning four District 9 titles (two in 3A and two in 4A) and now the state championship; they rode the right arm of senior pitcher Kylee Lingenfelter. Lingenfelter, who will be playing on the very same Beard Field next year as a freshman at Penn State, showed the local fans what they are in store for striking out 15 while walking three, hitting a batter and giving up four hits, three weakly hit, in recording her fourth shutout in five post-season games. “Pitching is a big part of the game of softball, Pifer said. “I think it is bigger in softball than in baseball. You get a pitcher out there and you can see what can happen. When they are on and they are focused and they are hitting their spots, moving the ball around, they can obviously dominate a game. She has been doing that. She has just been phenomenal. Lingenfelter was practically unhittable in the post-season. In five playoff games – the District 9 title game and four PIAA playoff games – she gave up one run on 12 hits, eight walks and a hit batter in 33 innings of work while striking out 74. “I have been practicing a lot more since the playoffs started, Lingenfelter said. “I felt pretty confident (that we would win the state title) after we won our first state game. It feels pretty good.

Lingenfelter did more than just pitch the Lady Chucks to victory. She was right in the middle of both Punxsutawney runs in a tworun third inning with an RBI double that scored the first run and then scoring the second run herself. The inning started when Riley Presloid hit a grounder to shortstop that she beat out and

then went to second on a throwing error by the shortstop, Jessica Indelicato. “I had two strikes on me, so I knew I had to put the ball in play, Presloid said. “When I hit it, I knew I could probably beat it out. Lingenfelter followed with a drive off the centerfield wall to put Punxsutawney up 10.

Continued from previous page “I was just looking for a pitch I could drive,” Lingenfelter said. Two outs later, Madison Stonbraker delivered a key single to left scoring Lingenfelter with the game’s second run. Stonbraker, a sophomore, was one of six freshmen or sophomores in the starting lineup for the Lady Chucks Friday, something that meant the team got better as the year went on. “I would say (we really started to gel) at the end of the regular season,” senior second baseman Mia Lingenfelter said. “We just really came together as a team; we were really comfortable together,” fellow senior, right fielder, Toya Jones added. Watch the full interview with Jones, Kylee Lingenfelter, Mia Lingenfelter and Presloid. Up 2-0, the spirits were high in the Punxsutawney dugout knowing the way Kylee Lingenfelter has been pitching, and she showed why striking out seven over the next three innings. Bethlehem Catholic did threaten a couple of times with the most serious coming in the sixth when Julia Sledz doubled to right-center field with one out in the sixth, perhaps the only hard-hit ball off Kylee Lingenfelter all afternoon. Alexa Panuccio then hit a flair that looked like it might get over the head of Mia Lingenfelter, who was playing in at second base, but Mia Lingenfelter went back on the - Continued on next page
EXTRA BASES
• Punxsutawney is the fourth District 9 softball team to win a PIAA title and the first to do so above Class 1A. The Lady Chucks join the 2007 and 2009 Curwensville teams and the 2015 Elk County Catholic team as PIAA Champions.
• District 9 is now 4-3 all-time in PIAA softball title games with Punxsutawney moving to 1-1 after losing the championship game in 2006. Clarion (2011) and Moniteau (2016) were also PIAA runners-up. • The loss snapped a sevengame PIAA playoff winning streak for Bethlehem Catholic, who had won the PIAA title in its last appearance in the PIAA playoffs in 2015.

Alyssa Jimenez was Bethlehem Catholic’s last hope, but Kylee Lingenfelter made quick work on her on three pitches striking out Jimenez, who entered the game hitting .419 with an eight-game hitting streak, for the fourth straight time to set off a wild celebration. “It’s unbelievable,” Jones said. “It’s awesome,” Mia Lingenfelter added. “Not really,” Pifer said when asked if it had sunk in yet following the game. “I’m just dizzy, trying to take it all in. T
Should I Stay or Should I Go?
By Mary Ellen Pollock-Ranieri for Hometown magazine
he big question for all high school graduates looms on the horizon in the lazy, crazy days of summer every five to ten years. You keep quizzing yourself and each question is like one of those goofy tests on Facebook. You know the kind of stuff: what color are you or which king you should have married in the 1600s. Still, you keep at it. Have I accomplished anything? Do I look worse or better? Will I have anyin thing common with anyone else? Do I really want to talk about things I did forty years ago with p e o p l e whom I knew fortyfive years ago. Last, but surely not least, will anyone care enough to talk to me? Right now, this indecision is bugging me. And, usually when I make a big decision, I always devise a list of pros and cons. That is exactly my plan of attack on this particular struggle, this grandiose choice I need to resolve. In the words of the Clash, “So you got to let me know. Should I stay or should I go?” To my high school reunion, that is. PRO – It’s an opportunity to challenge yourself. If you drink Atkins shakes, eat carrot sticks and lettuce leaves for a month before the reunion, you could possibly lose the equivalent of two sacks of sugar and get rid that weight you always wanted to drop. You will look like you did in high school. You may fit into those skinny jeans for the weenie roast at the camp where the reunion is held or you may be able to glide into the room dressed in a slinky outfit. Chances might be slim (excuse the pun) but give it a whirl. CON – Like it or not, you might be remembered for who you were and not for who you are. So, if you were a mean girl, a really nice nerd, a bookworm, a class clown, a stoner or a geek – chances are your classmates will expect you to be the same. It’s just human nature. Remember how you sampled cotton candy when you were a kid or maybe how you had to drink cod liver oil? You know the tastes well, right? You won’t forget them. Personally, I’m hoping not one person recalls that I was a lousy runner in gym class and that my sneakers were always sparkly clean. I’m also hoping no one remembers my short frosted wig that I sported in the seventh grade. Of course, I will remember the girl who wanted to harpoon it with her pencil in science class. PRO – It’s fun to see if the “In-Crowd” is still really in or out as far as Uranus in the limits of outer space. Now, you know the types I’m speaking about. Me, I wasn’t in at all. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to be – I did. Unfortunately, I lacked the skills to put me there – in the heart of popularity. I was
awkward and shy, overweight with glasses. I never could understand why anyone wanted to work with x’s and y’s in math class when you could just count real numbers. And, I didn’t wear perky red skirts on football days. The reunion provides the perfect opportunity to check out all the folks who were the exact opposite of what you were. CON – Shapewear. There, I said it. The elephant in the room has been recognized. Reunions and get-togethers these days are more slightly uncomfortable because of shapewear. Now, guys – I know you might not understand to what contraption I am referring. Granted, this stretchy undergarment is a remarkable invention, much like a fancy, super-charged body girdle that holds in your tubby tummy. It makes you look slim and trim and takes you down a couple dress sizes. But, who wants to spend an entire evening wrapped in a casing, like a giant sausage? You say I don’t have to wear one? Okay, maybe it’s me, but I really want to come down the staircase at the reunion just like Loretta Young; aside from plastic surgery – a full body elastic suit is the easiest solution. So I find myself lassoed and hog tied for an evening. I remember a reunion that I attended with a girlfriend who graduated from a different school in a different year. She was a fresh divorcée and really looked forward to seeing her old flame from high school at the biggest social event with a man since she signed the final papers in her lawyer’s office. Anyway, after about twenty-five mixed drinks, she tipped over on her bar stool, feet up in the air and GASP! – her tummy-tucking, body shaper was revealed. There she was – toes pointed to the sky and thighs covered with black bicycle-short type lingerie that exposed her dirty little secret. And yet another danger of wearing the things! I prefer to call it AEC – accidental exposed coverage. A definite minus on the scale of reunion preparation. PRO – Music from the ’70s was Awesome with a capital “A” and this decade happens to include the years I was in high school. What luck! It was like a tasty musical stew with all kinds of savory items in a rich tuneful broth. I mean, there were so many incredible kick-butt bands in that decade
(with carry-over from the ’60s): Pink Floyd, the Beatles, Zeppelin, The Moody Blues, CCR, and Jackson Browne. Let’s not forget the equally kick-butt soloists: Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, Donna Summer, and James Taylor – the list goes on and on. Heck, mix in some southern rock and even Sinatra. It was a great ten years of music. I remember having a deep conversation with some cute guy in my English class about the Eagles – we were talking about, “Take it Easy,” and we wondered where Winslow, Arizona, was located. Yea, music is such a good icebreaker, and music from your graduation decade provides something to look forward to at a reunion, I suppose. It affords much better fodder for a discussion than a description of the dark mole on your back, your irritable bowel symptoms, or your recent colonoscopy. So, when thinking about your upcoming class reunion, do as the song says, “Take it easy / Take it easy / Don’t let the sound of your own wheels / Make you crazy.” And so, what’s it gonna be? I repeat my question. As I approach my 45th anniversary of high school graduation, I’m torn. I reflect on the time one of my friends and I crashed a reunion at a Holiday Inn – sort of reminiscent of Vince Vaugh and Owen Wilson in Wedding Crashers, a film where
these two guys kind of make a career out of crashing parties in order to meet girls. Although neither one of us met a starcrossed lover, I look back fondly on the whole reunion scene because of our shenanigans that night. It was a good time. Now, it wasn’t as exciting as what happened to John Cusack at his reunion in Grosse Pointe Blank, but it was fun all the same. Maybe we enjoyed ourselves so much because we didn’t know anyone and there were no expectations to live up to or people to impress. It was all kind of imaginary. On the other hand, I guess you could treat reunions like you should treat Facebook or other social media playgrounds. Click on them from time to time and then go live your own life. You don’t have to let anyone else’s photos, stories, families or jobs be a meter stick for your own achievements. Don’t worry about measuring up to anyone’s expectations. Heck! You might engage in some really cool conversations with people you actually know. And, you don’t have to discuss the past, study hall, who sat with whom in the back of the bus, or the upcoming dance in the gym. You can just shoot the breeze about where your adventures have led you and where you might be going. You might actually enjoy yourself! So what’s the verdict? Yay or nay? Oui ou non? May I have a show of hands? Please, ya gotta let me know – me tienes que decir. Should I stay or should I go? (The Clash) •••

(Balloons for kids between shows.) Mike has more than twenty years’ experience as a singer, songwriter, musician, and children’s entertainer. In his days as a musician, he opened shows for celebrity greats such as Ronnie Millsap and Toby Keith. More recently, as a children’s entertainer, he has shared his kid-show stage with Joe Negri of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood. While his own kids were small, he would spend hours with them, creating silly rhyming lyrics and writing funny songs. These songs have now been performed for and loved by thousands of kids over the years. Combining his gift of music and love for the kids, magic, animals, and the stage, Mike has created a one-of-a-kind, imagination-inspiring kid’s show that is now known as “The Rock N Roll Pet Store Kids Show.” He performs his unique shows at fairs, parties, festivals, churches, schools, libraries, amusement parks, and resorts. Coal Memorial Committee Announces Annual Events

Race to the Face & Sale of Tiles Support Committee’s Mission
T
By the Coal Memorial Committee for Hometown magazine he summer and early autumn offer folks opportunities to participate in two events held by the Punxsutawney area’s Coal Memorial Committee – the Race to the Face and the annual dedication of new tiles at the group’s Coal Memorial – and to support the mission of the Committee through monetary donations and by investing time as a volunteer. Working in the present to preserve the past requires both time and money! Race to the Face Saturday July 28, 2018, at 9 a.m., the Coal Memorial Committee of the Punxsutawney Area Historical & Genealogical Society will host the annual Race to the Face. The Race to the Face is the first of the summer events the Committee hosts to

inform the public about the impact of coal on the history of the community. The Race to the Face will begin at 1286 Starr Road in Henderson Township near the site of the Eleanora Shaft Mine. Runners and bikers will travel over roadways, past remnants of the mining era, and along Big Run Creek. Runners and bikers will arrive as the morning sun evaporates the dew, creating a mystic aura to the hilltop. At the starting blast, participants will race along a rural road steeped in history, passing by land where virgin forests stood before the mighty axe of the lumberman felled the gigantic trees and along trails lumberman with his team of oxen dragged timber to a primitive sawmill, squared it, and built rafts which they floated down Mahoning Creek and the Allegheny River to market in Pittsburgh. They will glide by land to
where settlers in the 1850s removed the stumps and carved farms from the timbered land. On they will go past the remnants of a mining town where the spring that provided water still flows, and past the remnants of the Eleanora Shaft mine tipple. They will turn and follow remnants of a railroad where steam locomotives pulled mile after mile of loaded coal cars to the main line at the town of Big Run. If they listen carefully, they will almost hear the whistle of the train as it reaches the crossroads, warning all that coal was king. On the runners and bikers will go through areas where forests have regrown. The sun will be gliding overhead and heating the land. Along the stream in the deep woods, it will be cool. As they emerge from the forest near the remnant of the old saw mill dam and begin the climb up to the hilltop, runners and bikers will see the sun approaching mid-day. The hill will test the athletes’ endurance. When they reach the face of the coal, they will have traveled through both time and space. Dedication of Memorial Tiles On Sunday, September 2, Committee members will host their second summer event, the annual addition and dedication of memorial tiles at the Coal Memorial, 404 West Mahoning Street. At this event, tiles purchased by July 31, 2018, will be added to the Memorial. These tiles honor individuals who worked in any aspect of the coal industry. Coal industry workers include those who built, operated, and maintained the railroads, worked in any aspect of coal mining, as well as those who provided services for workers and their families. At the dedication the Memorial Committee Players will give a presentation on an event that had a major impact on the Punxsutawney area community. This year the program will focus on the role of the Adrian Hospital in advancing and enhancing medical care and how local practitioners contributed to improving health care in the community. The public is invited to participate in this event, which will include music by the Punxsutawney Community Band. Watch for more information as September draws near. of the Punxsutawney area. Each month an article on some aspect of the industry appears in Hometown magazine. The dominant industries in the Punxsutawney area from 1882 through 1959 were coal and coal related. Railroads enabled the exploitation of the coal that was found in much of southern Jefferson County. Preservation of the history of the coal industry from construction of the first railroads through the closing of the last deep mine enables the understanding of the development of the Punxsutawney area and its place in the state, the nation, and the world. Because of coal: 1) four major railroad lines intersected in the Punxsutawney area, 2) one of the first hospitals in North Central Pennsylvania was built; 3) the first regional headquarters for the Rochester & Pittsburg Coal and Iron Company was located here; 4) the Punxsutawney Furnace, an iron-smelting plant, was established; 5) a ready workforce developed, which enabled other manufacturing to thrive in the area; and 6) the diversity of those who came to work in coal and related industries melded Punxsutawney into a multi-ethnic,
multi-cultural community. The legacy of coal era continues to influence socio-economic status of the Punxsutawney area. Preserving this history requires financial and volunteer support. Persons may provide financial support for this activity in a variety of ways: First, purchasing a tile in memory of a family member who worked in a coal or coal-related industry helps to raise funds for a building to house and display historic artifacts and documents. Tiles purchased before July 31, 2018, will be installed on September 2, 2018. These tiles are mounted at the Coal Memorial site where visitors can see the variety of occupations and the pride of the families of those who worked in these industries. In the future, when a building has been acquired, the tiles will become part of the display within the building. Forms for ordering tiles are available on the Punxsutawney Area Historical & Genealogical Society’s webpage (punxsyhistory.org) or may be requested by e-mailing punxsyhistory@outlook.com. Local residents and visitors may pick up forms at the Coal Memorial site anytime, or at the Society’s Lattimer House, 400 West Mahoning Street, during hours of operation. A second option is to make a donation to

the Punxsutawney Area Coal Memorial Endowment Fund of the Punxsutawney Area Community Foundation. To make a donation send a check to the foundation, with a notation that it is for the Coal Memorial Fund, at P.O. Box 663, Punxsutawney, PA 15767. You may also drop off a check at the Lattimer House, or donate online at Bridge Builders Community Foundations, where you may select the Punxsutawney Area Community Foundation and make an electronic donation to the Punxsutawney Area Coal Memorial Fund. Third: a donation may be mailed directly to the Punxsutawney Area Coal Memorial at the Punxsutawney Area Historical & Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 286, Punxsutawney, PA 15767, or dropped off at the Lattimer House, 400 West Mahoning Street Punxsutawney, during operating hours. Volunteers are welcome to assist with Coal Memorial Committee activities, including researching and writing about any of the aspects of coal and coal-related history, or about individuals who worked in these industries; assisting with conducting programs and activities, including the Race to the Face; and maintaining the Coal Memorial property. Individuals may
propose special projects that support the activities of the Coal Memorial Committee. Individuals interested in volunteering may contact Nancy Anthony, president, or Shirley Sharp, chair of the Coal Memorial Committee, to discuss interests, activities, or projects. The Punxsutawney Area Coal Memorial Committee and the Punxsutawney Area Historical & Genealogical Society appreciate your support, which enables the preservation of the past in order to inform the future. All donations are greatly appreciated and qualify as tax deductible gifts under IRS Code 501(c)3, up to the maximum permitted by law. This article was prepared by the Coal Memorial Committee of the Punxsutawney Area Historical & Genealogical Society, Inc. Forms for purchasing a Coal Memorial tile to honor any person who worked in any aspect of the coal industry, including railroads, may be found online at www.punxsyhistory.org or may be picked up at the Lattimer House, 400 West Mahoning Street, Punxsutawney. Paul Talbot, a Lenape lifeways practitioner and a member of the Punxsutawney Area Historical & Genealogical Society, made this turtle shell rattle – a rattle used for dance and ceremonial purposes. Both the Lenape (Delaware) and O-non-dowa-gah, (Seneca) tribes, number their peoples in clans, one of which is the turtle, according to the lenapelifeways.org website and the sni.org websites, respectively. Garden Club’s Annual Plant Sale Coming Up
(“From Our Past,” researched by S. Thomas Curry, features items of interest from past editions of Punxsutawney and area newspapers.)
June 21, 1899 — A tough lot of gypsy outfits passed through town the other day. (Punxsutawney News)
June 26, 1889 — Workmen are now engaged paving our streets with plank. It is not the most durable thing out of which to construct pavements, but we will feel mighty proud while they last. (Punxsutawney Spirit)
July 3, 1890 — BOROUGH ORDINANCE – All persons having hacks, carriages, omnibuses or other vehicles permanently engaged in carrying passengers from any part of the borough to any other part of the same, shall take out an annual license, and shall pay a license tax of seven dollars per year for a onehorse vehicle, and ten dollars per year for a two-horse vehicle, to the Burgess. This section shall not apply to omnibuses owned by any of the hotels within the borough, and regularly engaged in carrying travelers and their baggage between the hotel and the railroad depots. (Punxsutawney News) [Note: The horse-drawn omnibus, with benches that seated four to six passengers, was popular as a “taxi” in the late nineteenth century before motorized vehicles in the early 1900s.]
July 8, 1903 — Rufas G. Melson, of this place, has purchased and placed in fine condition the famous “Granny Coon Spring” near North Point, and will ship its pure and health-giving waters to Punxsutawney, Pittsburg and other important cities, for the benefit of such of their inhabitants as know how to appreciate the finest spring water in America. (Punxsutawney Spirit)
July 10, 1959 — The first 49-star Flag that came to Punxsutawney is the property of State Senator Arthur E. Kromer. Appropriately it was hauled to full mast at the Kromer home on July 4th and saluted by Peter Barletta, who has done so much to promote the proper display of the Flag in Punxsutawney. (Punxsutawney Spirit) [Note: The American flag had displayed forty-eight stars since 1912 when Arizona became the forty-eighth state. Alaska became the forty-ninth state of the United States on January 3, 1959. In August 1959, Hawaii became the fiftieth state.] July 11, 1894 — There is general rejoicing over the end of the strike at Walston and Adrian. The one thousand or fifteen hundred men that went to work on Monday will greatly help to relieve the distressed state of affairs in this section. (Punxsutawney News) •••
