Msgr. Riccardo Proudly Announces 80th Annual SSCD Lawn Festival D ear Parishioners, THE EIGHITH LAWN FESTIVAL – WOW! We are about to embark on the eightieth year of the SS. Cosmas & Damian Lawn Festival. I am honored to have been involved in nearly thirty of those years. And I can say without hesitation that I have enjoyed every single one. Sure, the festival requires a lot of work and long days, but I am inspired and humbled by the many volunteers who invest their time and talents to make this happen each year. I think that this is an excellent opportunity for our school families and parishioners to work together for a common cause: ensuring the future of Catholic Education in the Punxsutawney area. Our Parish’s history is entwined with that of Punxsutawney. A mere fifty-one years after the Rev. David Barclay founded Punxsutawney in 1819, fifteen Catholic families, with the help of Fr. Herman Wienker, established what would become SS. Cosmas & Damian Church. In 1892
our elementary school welcomed its first students. In the intervening decades it has been central to our mission that we honor the commitment of our forefathers. Our educational programs have expanded and contracted over the years as the needs and demographics of the community changed. But among the things that have remained constant are our resolve to provide a superior values-centered educational experience to the children in our community and to do so at an affordable cost to the families. The annual Lawn Festival is instrumental in helping us to realize these goals. One hundred percent of the proceeds benefit our school students. Renee and Rick Doverspike, along with Frank Hetrick, Mike and Sharon Klingensmith, and Jeff and Kim Curtis are former school parents who still feel that working the Festival is important to them and the growth of the Parish and School. They continue to invest their time and talents – along with many other dedicated volunteers from the parish to see that our school remains an active, vital part of the Punxsutawney community. Please come and join us for food, fun, and fellowship. You are always welcome at Saints Cosmas & Damian Church!! God Bless! Msgr. J. Riccardo

D
ear Friends, Saints Cosmas and Damian Roman Catholic Church is proud to present our 80th Annual Lawn Festival! Our Lawn Festival began back in 1939 as an ice cream social on our church lawn. Over the years, it has grown into a three-day event where members of
our church, our school, the community of Punxsutawney and the surrounding area can come together for food, fellowship and fun. The Lawn Festival is one of the major fundraisers held to financially support our Catholic School. All proceeds help to defray educational costs in order to keep tuition affordable for families who believe in strong academic and faith-based education. The opportunity
to attend our school is available to all children of all faiths. The parishioners of SSCD Church and the families of the children attending the school would like to thank all of those who support our Festival. Special thanks goes to the Home and School Association, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, the Knights of Columbus, the Rosary Altar Society, St. Vincent de Paul, the Secular Franciscans, the school parents and parishioners who work at the Festival, the SSCD office staff and the Festival Committee members who continually go above and beyond. We also greatly appreciate the local businesses that have donated resources and services throughout the year and during the Festival to make this all possible. I personally would like to thank Frank Hetrick for the continued guidance he has shown me during this Festival year; his mentorship has been invaluable. This magazine lists all of the events, entertainment, raffles, games and great food that are featured at this year’s Festival. The grand prize drawing will be on Sunday night, August 4, at 10 p.m. All prizes this year are cash, with eight chances to win! Saints Cosmas and Damian Church hopes you will join us for our three-day event. Please come and enjoy the great entertainment, food, games and everything our Festival has to offer. Hope to see you there! Renee Doverspike Lawn Festival Chair

women in the Americas. Under the patronage of the Blessed Mother, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas are united by their faith in Jesus Christ, in their
devotion to the church and the Holy See. They donate to charities, administer scholarship programs and strive “to be helping hands where there is pain, poverty, sorrow or sickness.” The CDA motto is “Unity and Charity.” The CDA includes 66,000 duespaying members in 1,150 courts (local chapters) in forty-five states across the country and in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Guam, the Virgin Islands, Kenya, and Peru. Catholic Daughter women enjoy each other’s company at meetings and work hard for their parishes and communities. Deeply spiritual, together they share faith, love of God, and a distinctly feminine spirituality alluded to by Pope John Paul II when he spoke of the necessity of “feminine genius” in today’s world. The program includes concerns of today’s church and society as well as issues that affect the well-being of women and children. Catholic Education: More than a School
By Donna Jean Roberts ducation has a pivotal role in the development of individuals, and the positive impact of a Catholic education can be shown through the lives of the alumni of Punxsutawney’s local Catholic school, SSCD. After interviewing five alumni of SSCD, each from a different class, it is clear how they all value their experiences with Catholic education. The Catholic curriculum differs from that of public schools with the addition of religion classes and the attendance of Mass every Friday. Bernie Horner, an alumnus who graduated from high school at SSCD, recounts, “My fondest memories are the special events like May Crowing, when we honored Mary, Christmas programs, Lenten programs, such as stations of the cross, and when I was in high school, we were able to go on prayer retreats in Erie at Mercyhurst.” There is a unique benefit only received from a Catholic education: The fact that faith takes a part in the students’ daily lives and teachings at school. John Presloid, who studied at SSCD from kindergarten through eighth grade, believes that the most important aspect of his Catholic education was learning how he could do anything through Christ, and this helped him navigate the stress of school, work and sports. Sports were an important part of Presloid’s education, with his fondest memory coming from his undefeated basketball season while in eighth grade, and his team’s gaining the title of undefeated champions in the Erie Diocese. Presloid, being a father of three kids, all of whom have also attended SSCD school, encourages other parents to consider a Catholic education for their children because it teaches them important lessons like how to put God first, along with providing for them a great education in a very loving and caring environment. The intimate environment of a Catholic school like SSCD, where there are smaller classroom sizes, creates a closer relationship between students and their peers, along with their teachers. Patricia Murdock, who attended SSCD until seventh grade, comes from a family of SSCD alumni, including her father, siblings, husband and her three kids. She also teaches second grade at SSCD, and, when advising parents to not think twice about a Catholic education for their kids, she says, “We offer an education that combines Catholic faith and teachings with academic excellence. We have small class sizes which gives our teachers the opportunity to give more individual attention to students. We
for Hometown Magazine have a great support system from our parents and the parish. Catholic education forms the child in body, mind and spirit.” Therefore, Murdock wanted her kids to experience the same faith based academic education she had received in the safe, loving and homey environment of SSCD school. When thinking about why she chose to accept the chance to teach at SSCD, Murdock believed it was a good place to be due to its small family-like atmosphere where the teachers know all of the students and their families, creating a community of togetherness. The intimate environment of a Catholic school like SSCD, where there are smaller classroom sizes, creates a closer relationship between students and their peers, along with their teachers. Ron Walker, a former student of SSCD from preschool to eighth grade, had a class of seven during his last three years at SSCD. He looks back at this small class size with a smile as he remembers the strong bond he built with his classmates, people who are now his lifelong friends. According to Walker, the smaller groups allowed the students to know one another very well. The students also created closer relationships with their teachers, who were able to spend more time with each student in a smaller class. Mary Sloniger, a current teacher in Virginia, had studied at SSCD for eleven years, from preschool to eighth grade. While remembering her time at SSCD she stated, “We were like a family. You knew all of your teachers and trusted them with anything you needed, even if they weren’t your teacher that year. You were close with so many students in the school, even the ones that may have been in a different grade, because there were so many schoolwide events and activities that we did together.” As a teacher, Mary Sloniger has experienced many different types of education, from public school in high school to college and now teaching in Virginia. With her wide experiences of all kinds of schooling she still says, “I believe that a Catholic education is unlike any other, because you have that support system for the rest of your life. I could still go back to any of my teachers from SSCD for help or guidance and they would give it without thinking twice.” Before beginning a day full of learning, a student at SSCD walks into his or her classroom and, with the whole class, says the Pledge of Allegiance, along

ave you ever visited Saints Cosmas and Damian school? We’ve been here in Punxsutawney for 127 years, so what are you waiting for? We invite you to join us for our children’s mass every Friday at 9 am or to visit the school any weekday starting at 7:25 AM. We start our day with morning “Walk and Talk,” exercise and socialization with friends. Then our entire school gathers together for prayer and the sharing of our blessings. Morning sharing is anything the students have in their hearts, family fun, soccer teams, friends, pets or any special prayer intentions. We go to our classrooms with our hearts full of joy and ready to take on an advanced academic curriculum while maintaining our focus on God and what He wants for our lives. God is our school’s strength. The lyrics of the song “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” describes our school’s culture, saying: “All our sins and grief to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer.” In addition to corealigned curriculum, we offer choir, music, gym, technology, maker space, religion and after school computer coding and STREAM clubs. This year we are piloting an afterschool care program. Our SSCD students can stay after school from 2:30 until 5:30 for Christian-based supervision, fun, learning and snacks until par-

ents are available for pick up. Did you know that our students regularly visit nursing homes and serve our community by contributing to Make-A-Wish and Run or Walk for Someone Special? Our students have honored veterans during a Veterans Day program and have expressed gratitude to local police, fire, EMS and first responder heroes at a “thank you luncheon.” If you wonder where joy can be found in our world, look no further than SSCD School. Our recently expanded preschool is academically licensed by the Department of Education. Although it is currently full with an active waiting list, we will hold open registration for the 2020-2021 school year on March 2, so mark your calendars! Our kindergarten through sixth grade are Middle States Accredited, have increased enrollment and will continue to accept students throughout the school year. There are generous scholarship opportunities that historically have covered up to 90% of tuition. SSCD School welcomes you to visit, volunteer or work at our school. May God continue to bless you and our school, where students love to learn, and more importantly, learn to love. ◆◆◆

The Food Shack’s menu features sandwiches (hot sausage and shredded Italian beef), stuffed cabbage, haluski, chicken strips, French fries, cheese snacks, Pepsi products, bottled water, and juice boxes. In addition to offering festival-goers fresh buttered popcorn, the Popcorn Stand will help quench their collective thirst with Sno-cones in assorted flavors, and with specialty drinks, including peachy iced tea sangria with fruit (blueberries, raspberries, and peaches). Pam’s Famous Fried Dough is a yummy treat covered with either powdered or cinnamon sugar. In addition to her famous fried dough, Pam will offer freshly squeezed lemonade. A longstanding tradition at the SSCD Lawn Festival is the CD of A Cake and Ice Cream Stand, which offers both homemade pies and cakes by the slice. The stand features ice cream from the Penn State Creamery, and choices may include the following flavors: Vanilla, Chocolate, Peachy Paterno, Chocolate Chip, Butter Pecan, Peanut Butter Swirl, and Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy (a flavor that consists of vanilla ice cream with coconut, chocolate chunks, and nuts with pieces of candied fruit throughout) – available in regular cones or in waffle cones. students about the sacraments and being able to prepare them for First Penance and First Communion. She also thinks that the most important lesson she learned as a student at SSCD was the importance of God in her life, along with the importance of going to Mass, receiving the sacraments, and having a better understanding of the Catholic doctrine. At a Catholic school, she is not just a teacher of academics but also a teacher of religion. Religion is the aspect that separates Catholic schools from public schools. Horner, thinking back to her time at SSCD, commented, “I learned to treat others with love and respect regardless of their race, creed or background.” A Catholic education not only teaches the Bible and the Catholic religion, but the tools needed to become kind and caring individuals. Sloniger explained, “You learn valuable lessons through academics and faith and are taught that it is okay to be open about your faith because it is a place with no judgement.”
Although a Catholic school teaches its students about Catholicism, it is not required for a student to be Catholic nor religious. Catholic schools have the freedom to talk about religion, but religion is never forced on its students. The Catholic religion is taught in a respectful and academic manner where students of any religion can learn about Catholicism without feeling pressured into becoming Catholic. Students’ participation in religious activities are optional such as Friday Mass. There is a clear understanding from teachers that not all students are Catholic, so they create an environment for students to feel comfortable not being Catholic. A common theme between the different alumni is their appreciation of their time in a Catholic school. It is clear that Catholic education goes beyond learning math, science, history and English, but also instills in the students good morals and respect for others. ◆◆◆

The school practices the teachings of the Bible, including treating others as one would like to be treated. Walker reflects on how his catholic education prepared him for life and a career. He explains that not only did SSCD teach him a high level of work ethic, which he applied throughout his studies in college and continues to apply in his professional life as a dentist, but he also learned lessons from the Bible through the catholic curriculum that guide him to be a kind, caring and generous person. In religion classes, the students learn about God, as well as the sacraments and other aspects of the Catholic religion.
