Get to Know Your Local Businesses aTapuBliCTransiT 44 Transportation Center, Johnsonburg, PA 15845-2102 1.866.282.4968 • Business Office 814.965.2111 Years in Business: 38+ ATA was chartered as a public authority on May 19, 1976. ATA was the culmination of pilot rural transportation projects conducted in the early 1970s. A group was formed in the six counties of Cameron, Clearfield, Elk, McKean, Jefferson, and Potter counties known as the Regional Rural Transportation Advisory Committee (RRTAC) with the full support of the six counties’ commissioners. The purpose of the ATA was to bring together the growing variety of single county, municipal, and social service transportation systems into one coordinated regional agency. The other purpose was to avoid “balkinization” or “parochialism” in transit policy resulting in disjointed services and programs that would not be related to one another among the counties. Single county, municipal systems scattered across rural communities would prove to be too expensive, uncoordinated, and less productive in contrast with a single transit system managed among six rural counties. Since a regional ATA was formed before there was a public transportation program for rural areas, the model of service integration delivery and financing differ for ATA than for other systems delivering service in rural areas in the Pennsylvania. ATA was a true pioneer in the development of public transportation services for use by people residing in rural areas. Owner of Business: ATA is chartered under the Municipal Authorities Act of Pennsylvania. Services Provided: Fixed Routes, Fixed Routes with Deviation, Call-A-Bus (CAB BUS), Countywide Bus Service, Vanpool Advantage Network Programs Provided: Discounted Fares for Youth, Free Fare for Seniors, Medical Assistance Transportation Program, Transportation Program for Persons with Disabilities (PwD) Student Transportation: If you have a valid University ID for Clarion University of Pennsylvania, Indiana University of Pennsylvania or The University of Pittsburgh - Bradford Total Employees: Approximately 160 Hours: Depending on the route service can begin early in the morning and end in the late evening. Administrative offices are open 8 AM to 4 PM, with extended hours for Dispatcher operators and customer service representatives. What is your favorite part about running your business? Providing mobility to persons who rely on public transportation as their primary transportation. Solving mobility problems for people with new approaches and programs that are designed for rural communities. Introducing ATA mobility to many others who ride ATA by choice to save money on gasoline, save wear and tear on their car, take advantage of a public service offered at a reasonable fare. What is one interesting fact about your business, or something you want the community to know? ATA is a public transportation model for systems across the United States. Working with state and federal officials to design new rural programs and initiatives that add to mobility of local people and adding to the collective knowledge and benefit of the nation’s public transportation systems. At the turn of the century, ATA worked with LIFT to design and pilot the Rural Transportation Program for Persons With Disabilities. This program now known as PwD has grown across Pennsylvania. In July 2014 LIFT honored and recognized ATA for 241,355 ATA PwD rides since the inception of the program. What is the best part about being a business in your community? Earning the trust and support of ATA passengers, their families, stakeholders, agency partners, the community as a whole. Helping to build a stronger region with transit resources expertly applied and coordinated. After nearly 40 years the realization that you don’t have too look very far or wait for very long before you see and ATA bus go down the street in your community. There is a new mantra for public transportations systems in the United States that says, “WHERE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION GOES COMMUNITY GROWS.” ATA has adapted this slogan to reflect it’s own view of the impact of ATA: Wherever ATA goes the region grows. (video) areappointmentsneeded? For a ride on Punxsutawney Shadow or Night Shadow no advance reservation is needed. The ATA operates many CAB-BUS services among them the Punxsutawney CAB-BUS. CAB BUS service is the most demand responsive ATA offers.Where CAB service exists, grids/zones are established and show where the service is available. CALL-A-BUS is a public transportation service operated by ATA Jefferson County and the other five counties. The service requires prior day reservation, is a shared-ride, and open to everyone. Prior working day reservation is required to allow ATA to schedule the route of the bus (or van) to accommodate the most people in the most efficient manner: • This is a shared-ride which means there may be several people on the bus or van with you. Upon making your reservation you give up exclusive use of that vehicle. Call 1-866-743-3282. • Go anywhere you wish within the areas served. Some common destinations are shopping, doctors, work, or senior activity centers. Is your business seasonal? ATA operates year round, with most services and programs offered week days with fixed route services like Shadow Punxsutawney extended into Saturday. (also Clarion, Bradford and intercounty fixed routes. How did you get your start? What can only be called a visionary idea which emerged from the six counties commissioners, participating social service agencies, regional and local planning agencies, nursing home administrators, senior citizen activist groups and senior center participants, clergy, and local business leaders, dedicated public administrators, dedicated, friendly professional drivers and support personnel. The vision recognized that an areawide integrated transportation system would assure professional management of transit project funds, attract new sources of funding for rural transit that would not be available otherwise, and foster mobility as a central part of economic progress for the region. One example is the recent opening of the Punxsutawney ATA Transit Center, its role as a hub for transit busses, private busses, and other transit authorities, its obvious redevelopment impact on downtown Punxsutawney, its economic impact on Jefferson County and the other five counties that participate in ATA. With its reputation, integrity and its expertise long-standing ATA was tapped to manage the Clarion Area Transit system in Clarion, PA. The CAT BUS is not only a major asset to Clarion University but to the Clarion community and Clarion County. The new ATA Transit Center has already become a showplace for the economic transformation of Findley Street and Punxsutawney. In the coming months persons 65 years of age or older can obtain a special Photo ID which registers the senior rider, and provides easy quick access to the bus for the Free Fare Transit Program available aboard the Shadow. The PHOTO ID team will staff the Punxsutawney Transit Center every second Tuesday from now until the end of 2014. The hours of operation will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every second Tuesday at the Punxsutawney Transit Center. Do you have other locations/websites? www.RideATA.com, www.VanpoolAdvantage.net, RideATA Facebook Page, VanpoolAdvantage Facebook Page, ATA YouTube Channel, ATA on Twitter Do you participate in any trade shows, expos, fairs, events, or charities? ATA is a frequent participant in trade shows, expos, community events, parades, social service agency sponsored workshops, school presentations. See LIFT Expo and other events on RideATA Facebook Page

ATA has been an underwriter for the WPSU series “Our Town” working alongside local communities in ATA’s service area to generate stories, history, and profiles of communities where you will often see an ATA bus. B&HTire 3959 River Road, Worthville, PA • 814-849-5460 Years in business: We have been in business for 44 years. No, we are open all year. How did you get your start? I graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, and always thought that I would become an elementary teacher. I did some substitute teaching and TSS work before I had my second son in 2006. He was a preemie and I decided to stay at home to care for him. I then began babysitting for a friend. Soon, I had three children in my care and decided to become a licensed family provider, allowing me to care for a maximum of six children. In 2008, we bought a new home and I decided to expand my license capacity to twelve children by becoming a Group Childcare Home. At this point I also decided to pursue a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education. As we continued to grow, I decided to build a center. In September 2011, Creative Garden opened! We want to provide a safe, caring and loving environment for the children for whom we care. Dominos 109 Indiana Street, Punxsutawney • 814-938-3900 Years in business: I bought the store in 2008. We also have a dedicated cell phone, held by a pharmacist, available for emergency services, 814-591-7125. What is your favorite part of running your business? My favorite part of running Hometown Pharmacy is the desire that I feel to consistently get better at what we do as a pharmacy, and the ability to create the kind of workplace that my staff and I love coming to everyday. What is an interesting fact about your business that you want the community to know? Though we may seem like a “small” pharmacy, that doesn’t mean that we don’t practice our trade in the most innovative ways possible; often, having the lowest prices in town on both prescriptions and over-thecounter products. What is the best part about being a business in your community? The best part of operating in Punxsy is the loyalty you can feel from the people who live here if you treat them right. People still value an independent business. From where I stand, I also see a lot of community charity events and donations done for those people who have sudden health issues. It’s really heartwarming to see people pulling together and taking care of each other; and, we love to get involved however we can. Are appointments needed? We accept walk-ins like any other pharmacy, but I do make appointments personally with patients needing additional consults on their medications or other health concerns. We call this our Pharmacy Concierge Service. Is your business seasonal? Business can be very seasonal in terms of the products we sell. The fall brings flu season, and the summer brings those burns, scrapes and cuts. There’s never a dull moment. How did you get your start? I have been working in a pharmacy since I was 18, starting at the local Eckerd Drug (formally Thrift Drug) as an apprentice to Gary Bowers, RPh. who is now my co-pharmacist. After finishing my training in 2008, I met my business partners and began drawing plans to build the store. Do you have other locations? Punxsy Hometown Pharmacy is part of a small group of similar Hometown Pharmacies located in the Route 286 corridor, near Monroeville, PA. We have stores in Plum Borough, Holiday Park and Rostraver. The pharmacies are also connected with Mission Pharmacy located in Kittanning, PA, that provides long-term care pharmacy services to skilled nursing facilities and personal care homes. Ultimately, this makes us a stronger pharmacy for Punxsutawney. Do you participate in any fairs, events, or charities? Public health outreach is a top priority for Punxsy Hometown Pharmacy and we attend as many health fairs as possible. We also like to do presentations on current health topics at the local social centers and housing complexes. As I mentioned before, we hear about a lot of charity events for health-related issues and always try to help however we can, either donating to their charity auction or donating supplies for the event.

Christ The King Manor:

a Continuing Care retirement Community

C

hrist The King Manor is a Continuing Care Retirement Community located in DuBois, Pennsylvania. As a service of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Erie, we strive to provide the finest in Christian health care while preserving the dignity and independence of our residents. Christ The King Manor opened its doors on October of 1971 as an 80 bed residential living facility with a 20-bed infirmary. Within a few years the need for change was obvious. There was not enough interest in residential living in our area at that time, but there was an increasing need for more skilled care. In 1981 a 60-bed addition was opened as our Medicare unit. It was designed to be able to care for residents following a hospitalization. At the time this addition was added, many people were admitted from hospitals and lived the rest of their lives here. The lengths of stay were longer and it was not uncommon for residents to live here 10 years or more. The 1990s brought additional changes. People weren’t able to stay as long in the hospitals as they did earlier because of insurance reimbursements. These residents required more services than residents before them did. It was at this time that we increased our level of services in our rehab department. Many residents who came required physical, occupational and speech therapy services. We also started seeing residents, who had come for rehabilitation after a hospital stay; improve to the point that they no longer qualified for skilled care. Many of these people were not ready to return home. To provide a suitable facility for them and others in the community who were seeking independence as well as security, we added a 60 bed personal care residence in 1996. As part of the personal care home, there is a 20-room wing designed for residents who are experiencing the early stages of Alzheimer Disease or other memory impairments. Another service is the Older Adult Daily Living program. This level of service offers a respite for the caregiver as well as community interaction for the clients. We have people who utilize this service every day and others who choose to attend a few days per month. Since the adult day care program is part of our early stage Alzheimer unit, many people utilize this program to acclimate new resi-

dents to the facility then eventually admit them as residents. In 2008 we opened our Mary, Mother of Hope Memory Support Unit. This state of the art facility contains two separate neighborhoods of 12 residents each. All rooms are private with private bathrooms. The unit has country kitchens, spas, laundry, a central activity room, and a covered porch and outdoor area. Special programming is provided for those dealing with different types of dementia. One of our biggest success stories is our Therapy department. All our therapists are employed by Christ The King Manor. We don’t have any contracted therapists that move from facility to facility. This leads to better continuity of care. A fast-growing need among many seniors is a desire to maintain the mobility and involvement in activities they have always participated. Our rehabilitation team works to increase mobility and lessen pain while providing for independent living and improving daily living activities. Some of the treatments we provide include pulmonary, cardiac and orthopedic rehab; comprehensive wound care, and balance and fall prevention. Our physical therapists have been very successful using light therapy to heal wounds and decrease pain in many residents. In the past two years, more than 60% of the residents who were admitted to our skilled nursing units received rehabilitation treatments and were able to return back to the community. Many elderly, sick or disabled people need some assistance to remain in the comfort and security of their own homes and don’t want to live in a nursing facility. At Christ The King At Home we actually go into people’s homes to help them maintain their independence in a comfortable setting. We provide personal care, companionship, home management, and respite services that help maintain their independence in the community. Some of these services are provided by the department of Public Welfare using a Medicaid waiver, others are provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Aging, and some are provided on a private pay basis by the clients or their family members. P

Italian products. Punxsy Pizza’s signature item is the ‘Chief’ Pizza, an eighteen-slice, two-square foot pizza. The menu also includes Wedgies, Hoagies, Stromboli and more (see insert). Anthony’s knowledge of the pizza industry has enabled him to bring an authentic Italian pizza to town. At Punxsy Pizza you’ll find hand-tossed dough that is made with a high-protein flour, as well as an authentic chunky pizza sauce, inspired by the artistry of neighborhood pizzaioli (pizza-makers) throughout Italy. The sauce is created from a traditional blend of fresh, red, ripe tomatoes, extravirgin olive oil, garlic and herbs. The pizzas are topped with 100% natural cheese: a special blend of whole milk mozzarella and creamy provolone cheese. Along with the small-town feel, Anthony offers a wide range of modern technology provided by Revention POS systems: online ordering, mobile applications and social media ordering. The pizzeria offers seating in its updated dining room and the convenience of carry-out or delivery. Anthony has built strong community ties using his product to help local organizations such as the Punxsutawney Fire Department, Make-a-Wish and the Punxsutawney Area Community Center. More information can be found at www.PunxsyPizza.com. •••
