REACH THE MASSES (Contemporary Worship Music) Sunday, June 28 (12:30-1:30 p.m.) Reach the Masses got its start in 2012 as a church worship group. Since then, the band has gone through many member changes, and even a name change. It now consists of brothers Kevin, Kempton, and Kyle Beatty. The three have been making music together since their early teens, and have dozens of original songs under their belts, as well

The band Crossfire is a well-rehearsed group of musicians and friends who play a variety of wellknown favorites including oldies, old and new country, gospel, bluegrass, rock ’n’ roll, and even a few original tunes. Band members are Pat and Tom Hibbert, Dave Heist, Mike Tosh, Ray Lantz, and Mike Zaffuto. Their vocals, harmonies, musical talent, and years of experience give this band its polished sound and the band’s friendly demeanor and ability to entertain are certain crowd-pleasers. The band can be heard performing in surrounding areas at a wide range of events – from festivals and fairs to churches, senior centers, and many places in between. 938-4004 This is the fourth year for the Punxsutawney Alumni Band Concert. The Alumni Band consists of band members who have graduated, but enjoy getting together once a year to put on a concert to celebrate what music and band membership means to each of them. For some members, this is their only opportunity to play in a band and to have a reason to practice their instrument! The band uses an expanded definition of “alumni” and welcomes not only Punxsutawney Area graduates, but also spouses and children of graduates, community members who played in other bands, and current high school band members who would like to join this effort. The Alumni Band also served as a catalyst for the creation of the Punxsutawney Citizens Band, which is now in its second season. The band encourages any community members who would like to play with it to sign up at the band’s website (http://punxsypa.com/Band/). Practice for the concert will be on Saturday, June 26. The band will perform music from yesterday and today, including marches, show tunes, overtures, hymns, and other musical selections. Band members enjoy entertaining their audience and expect that a good time will be had by all. Though not intended as a reunion, many former band members use this gettogether as an opportunity to socialize with family members and old friends and to visit familiar places in Punxsutawney.

Master Balloon Artist, Dennie Huber has been twisting balloons since the age of twelve. Starting as others do – with the one-balloon puppy and giraffe – over the years, Dennie has built a reputation for his multiple balloon creations and his wacky balloon character hats with big 3D eyes, wings, feathers, and legs. Don’t be surprised to see children of all ages – and even a few brave adults – wearing one of Dennie’s silly balloon hats, ranging from big, rednosed clown hats to new characters like Chocolate the Moose and Daffy the Duck. It’s no wonder Dennie’s line never seems to end! Co-sponsored by Indiana First Bank. DENNIE HUBER (Magic) Monday, June 29 (1:30-2 p.m.); Tuesday, June 30 (1-1:30 p.m. & 3-3:30 p.m.) A performer since the age of twelve, Dennie’s shows offer wholesome family fun. Each show features silly and mystifying magic tricks, interesting

stories and lively toe tapping music. Dennie is also one of the few magicians in the country who sings while performing some of his routines. Audience members are also a big part, joining Dennie on stage to sing, dance, and share in the fun. Dennie guarantees that “there’s something for everyone” and “there is never a dull moment.” Co-sponsored by Indiana First Bank.

Groundhog Festival Committee members Josie smelko (left) and Brooke henninger (right) are all smiles about s & T Bank’s – here represented by Jodi Presloid – sponsorship of Ole ’97’s show, set for monday evening, June 29, during the 2015 Groundhog Festival. (submitted photo)

Ole ’97 Johnny Cash Tribute Show Band performs high-energy, engaging, and interactive entertainment for festivals, fairs, dinner shows, private parties, private clubs, and nightspots. Based in

Johnstown, Pa., but covering Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, and points north, south, east, and west, band members have performed at the National Apple Harvest Festival, Hershey Lodge, Thunder in the Valley, the Mount Pleasant Glass & Ethnic Festival, Gateway Clipper, PortageFest, Kettle Creek Music Fest, Punxsutawney Groundhog Festival, Perry County Fair, Cookport Fair, Clymer Days, Green Grove Gardens, McClure Bean Soup Festival, Hoodlebug Festival, Roxbury Bandshell, Arcadia Theater, Barrow Theater, just to name a few. The band has opened for Ricky Lee, Aaron Tippin, Sammy Kershaw, and Joe Diffie. The band’s passion is to keep the fire burning for the Man in Black, Johnny Cash. The world lost Johnny Cash in 2003, but Randy Hunter pays tribute with a style and a voice that captures Johnny in his prime. The band’s show is similar to a Johnny Cash variety show and can be tailored to the needs of the specific performance venue. Just like Johnny’s show, there is always room for variety in the band’s performances. Have a favorite tune? Just request it! And wait until you hear Charlene Boldin! Only one word will come to mind – amazing! Band members guarantee it! Joe Brucker is lead guitarist and fiddle virtuoso; Doug Nagy is rhythm guitarist and second lead guitarist, and he was voted best looking in a cowboy hat; Andy Heinze is bassist and young bachelor; and Paul Carpenter is drummer and sign painter. By the way, you may not know that Johnny covered tunes by Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson, Depeche Mode, and even Nine Inch Nails. Ole ’97 also plays several original tunes, “Whole Lotta Cash,” “Fruitcake,” “I’s in the Middle of Sin,” and several others in development. Sponsored by S&T Bank TEDDY BEAR PICNIC Tuesday, June 30 (9:30-10:30 a.m.) The popular Teddy Bear Parade and Picnic will again return to P u n x s u t a w n e y. The event will take place on Tuesday, June 30, in Barclay Square. Registration will be held at 9:30 a.m., and the parade of teddy bears and their owners will commence at 10 a.m. The four categories of teddy bears for this year’s parade and picnic are as follows: 1. Bath Time Bear, 2. My Bear & I (dressed alike), 3. Bedtime Bear, and 4. Noah’s Ark Bears (two by two). In the event of rain, the parade and picnic will be moved to the second floor of the F.O. Eagles building on East Mahoning Street (directly across from Barclay Square). Sponsored by The Career Women’s Club. continued on next page

Her family was part of a touring southern gospel group, and Jessie traveled and sang with them starting at age three and continuing until she was 13. “I didn’t have what people probably think of as a traditional childhood,” she says, “but I feel so privileged to have had a background like that. I learned to love being on stage” It was also through her family that Jessie discovered a love of country music. “I always listened to a lot of country music growing up,” she says. “My aunt and several members of my family always had it going.” She also says that southern gospel and country music share similar roots, so writing and performing her own country songs feels very much like home to her. In fact, the moment Jessie knew that she wanted to be a country artist was when she took the stage and performed the first song she wrote. “Music has always been a part of my life, but singing my own song was such an adrenaline rush,” she says. “I thought, this feels good and this feels right. It’s what I was created to do.” And although writing her own music can definitely be challenging, it’s something that Jessie really enjoys. “I hear a lot of different people’s stories, and I write a lot about everyday experiences like love. I try to always write about someone or something I know.” For example, one of Jessie’s newest songs is about her biological father, who passed away when she was very young. Although it was an extremely hard song for her to write, she says it was also a way for her to work though her emotions “Anyone who’s lost a loved one can relate to this song,” she says. “Writing it was tough and I dug really deep, but it’s very real.” And Jessie’s authenticity as an artist – and also as a person – is one of the things her fans connect with the most. “I’m real,” she says. “Who I am on stage is who I am in person. I don’t have a country twang – I just love country music. My songs are true and they’re from experience, and you’re going to have a great time at my show.” Sponsored by Proform Powdered Metals. 20TH ANNUAl GROUNDHOG 5k RUN / 2 MIlE WAlk Wednesday, July 1 (doors open at 5:30 p.m.) Proceeds from the 20th Annual Groundhog 5K Run / 2 Mile Walk benefit the Punxsutawney Area Community Center. made this all possible. We left our home in Alaska seven years ago to follow this dream, spent all of those seven years doing an insane amount of shows (like 2,000 – seriously!) all over the country and practicing like maniacs. Now here we are in Tennessee, the home of Country Music, and we’re still following our dream. Honestly, we don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. That said, we want ya’ll to join us on our incredible journey, because we still have a long way to go, and the more the merrier! Have you ever longed for the sound of music that is real and honest – music that speaks to your soul, music without glitz and glamour, music with raw beauty with exquisite harmonies, thought-provoking lyrics, and melodies that take you away? duce a great show. And ’50s and ’60s rock ’n’ roll was one of their passions. They met a local musician who produced custom show tracks for singers and theatre groups. The track music could create the sound of the original artists and provide the full orchestral sound associated with many of the hits of the ’50s and ’60s with a quality far superior to the usual karaoke or performance tracks. They decided that they wanted to be a show with all the entertainment elements – costumes, choreography, audience participation, and wacky humor – instead of just another band that played oldies. Two additional members were added to help recreate all the great sounds of the great oldies artists. A wacky comedy style evolved along with the music, and their great fourpart harmonies were complemented with one zany bit after another. Their show was so much fun that a broad following of fans rapidly developed. Sh-Boom was a hit. They performed for the Holiday Inn circuit and for

clubs, dinner theater, and local festivals. Within a few years, they were headlining at fairs and festivals around the Midwest and the east coast. They were soon opening for scores of legendary artists like The Temptations, The Four Tops, Paul Revere and the Raiders, and others. A four-day engagement at Springfest in Ocean City, Maryland, landed them a long-term association and even more opportunities to open for acts like The Beach Boys, The Smothers Brothers, America, Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons, and even country acts like Mary Chapin Carpenter, Colin Raye, Marty Stewart, and dozens of others. They found themselves on nationwide talk shows, performing on cruise lines, for corporate events, fundraisers, and concert and arts venues. Everywhere, they left audiences applauding their great harmonies, howling at their wacky comedy, and praising them for recreating so many warm memories of the ’50s and ’60s. They commanded standing ovations wherever and whatever the venue.

These were not kids, but men in their 40s intent on approaching their passion as a business – a business designed to appeal to not just baby boomers, but to everyone, especially families. In 1994, their passion finally took them full-time. They gave up established and lucrative careers to do what they most loved. Life on the road led to inevitable personnel changes and the option of a live band was added in 1998. In 1999, in an attempt to “grow,” and after a name change, the group split. One original member continued with the act while Tom Caldwell reunited with Greg Couch, another original founder of the act. They added former lead singer Gary Royse, and later Phil Snell, to form The Avalons. They vowed to return the act to the elements that made them great and beloved by audiences. Since then, the Avalons have continued to perform for fairs and festivals, concert and arts venues, and as an opening act for The Vogues, The Four Lads, Tommy James, and dozens of legendary artists. In 2005, the original act (then called the Marquees) folded and a few of the members formed a new group called The Legends. Tom Caldwell and Gary Royse agreed to go back and help out temporarily with that act, as well. Six years later in 2011, the Legends closed up shop. Gary Thompson, talented falsetto for The Legends, joined forces with the Avalons to form the group as it exists today. Tom says that, in effect, the act came full circle from the original act in 1987. The name changes and personnel changes of both groups have caused confusion all around, but fans need only to know that the real Sh-Boom of Ohio

still exists in the fun and excitement that is the Avalons. Sponsored by First Commonwealth Bank; Hopkins Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning; Krise Transportation; and Priority First Credit Union. FIREWORkS Saturday, July 4 (10 p.m.)
