t’s that time of the year again! The annual Groundhog Festival is coming to town! It is a week-long event that many look forward to every year in celebration of that little furry creature that put us on the map. Due to the anticipation of this wonderful fun-filled event of our summer, local and area residents and thousands of out-of-town visitors have already planned to be in the park. As you approach Barclay Square during festival week, your senses will go for a wild ride. You will see the crowd of smiling festival goers getting larger, feel your ear drums start to dance as you hear the music playing in the park, and you will recognize the smell of the fresh baked, gooey cinnamon rolls, sausage sandwiches, and other tantalizing edibles available in the food court. From July 1 through July 7, tens of thousands will gravitate to the town square and the streets of Punxsutawney to do a little shopping, listen to music, catch up with old friends and enjoy all the varieties of food. This is the one special time of the year that Punxsutawney sets aside to host many local and outside artists and vendors, displaying their talents and goods. “Every year is special; we have an interesting schedule this year,” says Roger Steele, the Festival Committee leader who has been involved in the event for close to thirty years. “Dedicate this week to our freedom since this is over the Fourth of July, and pray all the troops are safe that week.” This year’s Sunday opening afternoon will begin with a gospel service; Monday night features a teenaged group from Lancaster who were finalists in “The Groove Battle of the Bands.” On other nights, you can

enjoy music from the ‘60s and even two nights of country. Wrapping up the week, for the very first time, there will be a Journey tribute band! “I hope everyone comes out. Come, bring your chair and enjoy,” says Steele. You never know what the Groundhog Festival has in store until you get out and go! Don’t miss out on this one-week event that only happens once a year. I promise, you won’t regret it! For more information on the week’s entertainment visit www.groundhogfestival.com •••

SADECky’S pUppEtS continued — Sadecky’s Puppets, Inc. was founded in 1981 by brothers Jay and Michael Sadecky, who had an early interest in the art of puppetry. The puppeteer troupes now travel to 14 different states, performing over 500 shows per year. Having raised children of their own, both Jay and Mike recognize the importance of the nurturing and character building of today’s children. Written into each script are issues such as respect, manners, peer pressure and honesty. We hope that in this way the audience will not only be entertained, but will also adopt some valuable lessons for life. ON THE COVER: It's summertime in the park with the annual Groundhog Festival, featuring fun for the entire family. Claire Skarbek (left), Autumn Porada, Lincoln Skarbek, and Rachel Porada get gussied up for all the fun in Barclay Square.

In memory of Ursula Each of us on the Festival Committee has a heavy heart as we approach the opening of the 46th annual Groundhog Festival. We are missing the gentle voice and endearing kind words of our long-time member Ursula Albino. “What else can I do?” Ursula would ask. She worked every afternoon in the souvenir booth. Muz and Ursula would then enjoy their supper at our big table before settling into a chair for the evening band concert. Ursula will be missed. She had a quiet smile that melted any situation into a positive outcome. We all must smile a little more this festival and feel the whisper of an afternoon breeze that she will send our way. She will be with us in thought as we proudly present this festival schedule.
