Festival Chair Sends Greetings, Invitation
D
ear Friends, Saints Cosmas and Damian Roman Catholic Church is proud to present our 76th Annual Lawn Festival! Our Lawn Festival began back in 1939 as an ice cream social on our church lawn. Over the years it has grown into a 3day event where members of our church, school, the community of Punxsutawney and the surrounding area can come together for food fellowship and fun. The Lawn Festival is one of the major fundraisers to financially support our Catholic School. All proceeds help to defray educational costs in order to keep tuition affordable for families that believe in strong academic and faith based education. The opportunity to attend our school is available to all children of all faiths. The parishioners of SSCD Church and the families of the children attending the school would like to thank all of those who support our Festival. Special thanks goes to the Home and School Association, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, The Knights of Columbus, Rosary Altar Society, St. Vincent de Paul, the
Secular Franciscans, school parents and parishioners who work at the Festival, SSCD office staff, and the Festival Committee who continually go above and beyond. We also greatly appreciate the local businesses who have donated resources and services throughout the year and during the Festival to make this all possible. I personally would like to thank Frank Hetrick, for all of the patience and guidance he has shown me during this Festival year; his mentorship has been invaluable. In this magazine are listed all of the events, entertainment, raffles, games, and great food that are featured at this year’s Festival. The grand prize drawing will be on Sunday Night, August 9th at 10:00 p.m. All cash prizes this year with 3 chances to win! Ss. Cosmas and Damian Church hopes you will join us for our 3-day event. Please come and enjoy the entertainment, food, games and everything our Festival has to offer. Hope to see you there! Renee Doverspike Lawn Festival Chair ◆◆◆

Annual SSCD Lawn Festival Equals Early August Fun! I t’s that time of the year! Mark your calendar for August 7, 8, and 9 and join the parishioners of Ss. Cosmas & Damian Church for three days of fun and great food during the church’s 76th annual Lawn Festival. Traditionally held on the first weekend in August, the Lawn Festival brings together parishioners, former parishioners, members of the community, and many out-of-town guests for a weekend of games, prizes, and old-fashioned camaraderie. The biggest part of the festival is set up under brightly colored tents on the parish lawn. Many game booths, and a variety of delicious foods and baked goods can be enjoyed throughout the weekend. The primary objective of the parish Lawn Festival is

to raise much-needed funds to meet the financial obligations of the SSCD School. The success of the Lawn Festival hinges on parents of our school children, parishioners, alumni of the school, members of the community and friends of SSCD parish. The 2015 Festival chairperson is Renee Doverspike – with the help of previous chairperson Frank Hetrick. From year to year, many individuals are needed to make the Lawn Festival a success. If anyone would like to become a chairperson for a particular booth or would like to volunteer a few hours to help out, please contact Renee at 939-9336. Your help is greatly appreciated. ◆◆◆

longstanding tradition at the SSCD Lawn Festival is the variety of great-tasting food! The 76th annual Lawn Festival will feature the following food stands: “Frank’s Star Lunch” Hot Dog Stand, the Food Shack, the Popcorn Stand, Pam’s Famous Fried Dough, the Funnel Cake Stand, and, of course, the CD of A Cake and Ice Cream Stand. During the festival, “Frank’s Star Lunch” will offer the following: hot dogs, hamburgers, fried ham, cheeseburgers, Pepsi products, bottled water, and white and chocolate milk. The stand will also offer gluten-free buns. The Funnel Cake Stand offers not only funnel cakes – a traditional festival and palate-tempting snack – sprinkled with either powdered or cinnamon sugar, but also deep-fried Oreo cookies. The Food Shack’s menu features Laska pizza, sandwiches (hot sausage and shredded Italian beef), stuffed cabbage, haluski, chicken strips, French fries, cheese snacks,
Pepsi products, bottled water, and juice boxes. In addition to offering festivalgoers fresh buttered popcorn, the Popcorn Stand will help quench their collective thirst with Snocones, not only in assorted flavors, but also with sugar-free flavors, and with specialty drinks, including peachy iced tea sangria with fruit (blueberries, raspberries, and peaches) and a tropical breeze drink (coconut milk, ginger ale, and pineapple). Pam’s Famous Fried Dough is a yummy treat covered with either powdered or cinnamon sugar. In addition to her famous fried dough, Pam will offer freshly squeezed lemonade. A longstanding tradition at the SSCD Lawn Festival is the CD of A Cake and Ice Cream Stand, which offers both homemade pies and cakes by the slice. The stand features ice cream from the Penn State Creamery, choices may include the following flavors: Vanilla, Chocolate, Peachy Paterno, chocolate Chip, Butter Pecan, Peanut Butter Swirl, White House, and Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy (a new flavor that consists of vanilla ice cream with coconut, chocolate chunks, and nuts with pieces of candied fruit throughout) – available in regular cones or in waffle cones. SSCD School Focuses on Faith, Knowledge, Service, Friendships P arents, ask yourselves: What will your children have to hold on to at the end of their formal education? At the SSCD School, your loved ones will have the opportunity to grow in faith, to develop knowledge, to participate in service, and to develop lifelong friendships. Faith – through their participation in weekly liturgies and in our supportive religious environment, students gain the understanding and
compassion that bridge all faiths. Knowledge – small class sizes allow individual attention and support from Pre-K through Grade 7. The school’s curriculum is aligned with current state standards, and all programs are accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Service – our students learn core values in the classroom and apply them in the communities in which they live:
responsibility, respect, honesty, trust, kindness, and fairness. Friendships – from Pre-K through Grade 7, our smaller classes allow for, and encourage, the building of meaningful, lasting friendships. Our students learn together, pray together, and play together. The friendships that begin here often last a lifetime. ◆◆◆

Knights of Columbus Committed to Keeping, Spreading the Faith T
he Knights of Columbus was founded by Father Michael J. McGivney, curate at St. Mary’s Parish in New Haven, Connecticut. As the priest explained to a small group of men, his purpose for calling them together was manifold: To help Catholic men remain steadfast in their faith through mutual encouragement, to promote closer ties of fraternity among them, to set up an elementary system of insurance so that the widows and children of members in the group who might die would not find themselves in dire financial straits. The founder and first officers of the fledgling organization selected the name Knights of Columbus.
They felt that as a Catholic group, the name should relate to Christopher Columbus, the Catholic who discovered, explored, and colonized the North American continent. The group has blossomed into an international society of more than 1.5 million Catholic men, plus their families, in more than 10,000 councils, who have dedicated themselves to the ideals of Columbianism: Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism. Local Council 452, which reorganized in 1997, was started in 1899 and celebrated its 100th anniversary on October 10, 1999, at which time members dedicated a monument to the unborn, located in the front lawn
of the Ss. Cosmas & Damian rectory, under the flag pole. The Knights provide scholarships and help our church, school, and community to keep the Faith and to spread it! This has been a guiding principle of the Knights of Columbus. Any man 18 years of age or older who lives up to the Commandments of God and the Precepts of the Church is eligible to join. Local Council 452 meets the first and third Monday of each month at Reschini Hall in Walston at 7 p.m. Anyone interested in membership may contact Frank McSteen at 6185044. ◆◆◆

John Francis Orsich (August 8, 1967 – September 9, 2014) Beloved son of Alice (Kaza) Orsich and the late Frank Orsich Much-loved brother of Mary Christine Mangano and Beth Darnell “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest? He said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” Jesus to the Sadducees (from the Gospel of Matthew) John served with a heart that always had room for others. He was a dogged fund-raiser for the ARC of Jefferson and Clearfield Counties’ Run or Walk for Someone Special. He was a dedicated worker and supporter of the annual Lawn Festival of Ss. Cosmas & Damian, his home parish. He was a devoted follower of all sports, especially of the local teams of Punxsutawney Area High School.

The ladies of the Ss. Cosmas & Damian Catholic Daughters of the Americas have been scooping ice cream on the parish lawn since 1939, when they organized the Cake and Ice Cream Social that evolved into the SSCD Lawn Festival. Their famous cake and ice cream stand is still going strong and is, no doubt, the festival’s longest standing tradition. (submitted photo)
PSU’s Berkey Creamery Celebrates 150th Year
F
or the past few years, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas’ cake and ice cream stand at the Ss. Cosmas & Damian Church’s annual Lawn Festival has featured ice cream from the Penn State Berkey Creamery, which celebrates the 150th anniversary of its founding in 2015. The original creamery was established in 1865 – during the same year that the Civil War ended – in the “College Barns” located behind present-day Old Main. The barns housed not only the creamery, but also a blacksmith shop and a hayloft. The college’s first stand-alone creamery was built 1889 with a portion of a $7,000 state grant. The new, one-story building included a cold-storage room, a cream-ripening room, a workroom, and office space. The creamery’s new home was built as part of Henry Armsby’s efforts to upgrade Penn State’s instruction and research in dairy farming. Armsby was the first dean of Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences, and his new creamery quickly became the focal point of numerous bulletins of immediate value to dairy farmers. The popularity of both the creamery’s products and course offerings led the creamery to move to the Patterson Building in 1904 – a mere fifteen years after the first stand-alone creamery was built. The new location provided greatly increased processing operations and facilitated the research and

development of pasteurized milk. At this time, the university also created its dairy manufacturing major. In addition, the creamery began the retail delivery of pasteurized milk and cream. Twenty-eight years later, in 1932, the creamery moved to a wing of Borland Laboratory. By this time, the ever-expanding creamery purchased milk and cream from 300 area farmers and sold milk, cheese, and ice cream in the State College and Altoona markets. In August 2006, the creamery moved into the first floor of the Rodney A. Erickson Food Science Building. The Berkey Creamery store, named after Earl and Jeanne Berkey, occupies 3,700 square feet of this space. The store alone is two and one half times the size of the old creamery store in the Borland Laboratory. The Berkey Creamery prides itself on the freshness of its ice cream. On the average, only four days pass between the time a cow is milked and her milk is transformed into the yummy ice cream that fills a cone. The ice cream is not only fresh, but it is also rich, with a butterfat content of 14.1 percent. During your visit to the 76th annual SSCD Lawn Festival, don’t forget to stop by the CD of A cake and ice cream stand to enjoy a scoop or more of the Berkey Creamery’s fresh and rich ice cream. You’ll be glad you did! ◆◆◆

SSCD — What’s in a Name?
s. Cosmas & Damian Church celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2010. The church’s historical roots extend to August 26, 1885, when Father Herman Clement Wienker blessed and laid the cornerstone of the new building at 6 o’clock in the morning. At this time, Father Wienker also revealed the saintly patronage after which he decided to name the church, and in doing so, went against the grain of the day’s common practice. During this time, priests often waited to name a new church until the bishop arrived for its dedication. Generally, the church’s name was derived from the feast day that coincided with the day that the bishop came to the dedication; however, Father Wienker did not want to wait – plus, he had another notion for naming the church. His brother was a Benedictine monk in Great Britain, and out of respect and admiration for him, Father Wienker named the church after the name his brother had chosen in his religious life – Cosmas. St. Cosmas and St. Damian were early Christian physicians and martyrs whose feast is celebrated on September 26. They were twins, born in Arabia, who practiced the art of healing in the seaport of Ægea,
now Ayash, on the Gulf of Iskanderun in Cilicia, Asia Minor. Ss. Cosmas and Damian attained a great reputation. They accepted no pay for their services and were called anargyroi, meaning “the silverless. Their selfless service brought many to the Catholic Faith. When the Diocletian persecution began, the Prefect Lysias had Saints Cosmas and Damian arrested and ordered them to recant. Refusing, they remained constant under torture The cornerstone of the original Ss. Lawn Festival Tradition Began as Ice Cream Social The ladies of the SSCD Catholic Daughters of the Americas began and organized the first parish gathering on the church lawn in 1939. The Cake and Ice Cream Social was meant to be a gathering of the parish to socialize and enjoy some fun and fellowship together. The original philosophy has continued in each successive lawn festival. The ladies’ famous cake and ice cream stand is still going strong and remains a part of the SSCD Lawn Festival celebration.
The parishioners of SSCD are eternally grateful to the ladies of the CD of A for their 76 years of dedication to the annual lawn festival and to the SSCD Catholic School. Thank you, ladies! The SSCD Catholic Daughters of the Americas (Court St. Rita #353 – Unity and Charity) offer the following prayer to Saint Rita: “O God, Who communicated such great grace to Saint Rita that she imitated your example and bore in her heart and on
her countenance the sacred marks of your love and passion; God, we beg you, by her merits and intercession, that we may love our enemies and ever contemplate with deep contrition the sorrow of your passion. Who lives and reigns world without end. Amen. The local Court St. Rita #353 was organized in Punxsutawney on January 26, 1919. ◆◆◆
