Folks of all ages find fun and games at the annual SSCD Lawn Festival. (Photos in this issue submitted by Jeff Curtis)

Msgr. Riccardo Proudly Announces th 77 Annual SSCD Lawn Festival ear Parish and Community Members, Having recently celebrated my 41st year of Priesthood in the Diocese of Erie, I am both honored and humbled to have spent nearly threefourths of that time here in Punxsutawney. The parishioners of Ss. Cosmas & Damian, St. Adrian, St. Anthony, and St. Joseph have become my extended family, and the community at large has always made me feel welcome. I have come to appreciate why so many local residents choose to spend their lives in Punxsutawney – because we are blessed to call such a wonderful town “home.” Even with all of the amazing people in this town, I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the marmot that keeps us on the map: Punxsutawney Phil. Having witnessed the fun and lighthearted celebration of Groundhog Day throughout the years, I am amazed at how some-

ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS!

“Should I play or should I eat?” Once in a while, the options at the SSCD Lawn Festival create dilemmas for young festival-goers. (submitted photo)

Festival Chair Sends Greetings, Invitation ear Friends, Saints Cosmas and Damian Roman Catholic Church is proud to present our 77th Annual Lawn Festival! Our Lawn Festival began back in 1939 as an ice cream social on our church lawn. Over the years, it has grown into a three-day event where members of our church, our school, the community of Punxsutawney, and the surrounding area can come together for food, fellowship, and fun. The Lawn Festival is one of the major fundraisers held to financially support our Catholic School. All proceeds help to defray educational costs in order to keep tuition affordable for families that believe in strong academic and faith-based education. The opportunity to attend our school is available to all children of all faiths. The parishioners of SSCD Church and the families of the children attending the school would like to thank all of those who support our Festival. Special thanks goes to the Home and School Association, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, the Knights of Columbus, the Rosary Altar Society, St. Vincent de Paul, the

Secular Franciscans, the school parents and parishioners who work at the Festival, the SSCD office staff, and the Festival Committee members who continually go above and beyond. We also greatly appreciate the local businesses that have donated resources and services throughout the year and during the Festival to make this all possible. I personally would like to thank Frank Hetrick for all of the patience and guidance he has shown me during this Festival year; his mentorship has been invaluable. This magazine lists all of the events, entertainment, raffles, games, and great food that are featured at this year’s Festival. The grand prize drawing will be on Sunday night, August 9, at 10 p.m. All cash prizes this year with three chances to win! Saints Cosmas and Damian Church hopes you will join us for our three-day event. Please come and enjoy the entertainment, food, games, and everything our Festival has to offer. Hope to see you there! SSCD School Focuses on Faith, Knowledge, Service, Friendships

Children are far and away the most important assets that we have. They are both our legacy and our future. As a parent, you want to give your children the opportunity to grow and learn and laugh in an environment that is safe and supportive. You want to give them the benefit of up-to-the-minute academics and timeless values. You want to give your child the tools that he or she will need to navigate the complex world around them. Saints Cosmas and Damian School is uniquely qualified to support you in this endeavor. SSCD School teaches faith. Your child needs faith because it is a really big world out there – one that presents some very tough decisions. Our students attend weekly liturgies, participate in the Mass, and are taught morals and character values. Classroom discussions allow children to learn about, and share, how faith impacts their life. Our academics are strong. Because we maintain small class sizes, our students receive more individual attention and support from PreK through Grade 6. All our academic programs are accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Our curriculum is aligned with current

state standards. Serving others is a priority. Our students learn core character values in the classroom and apply them in the communities in which they live. Through a variety of service projects, children get to see firsthand the value of helping others. In today’s society, empathy, kindness, and love for others are needed more than ever. We form bonds that last a lifetime. From PreK through Grade 6, our smaller classes allow for, and encourage, the building of meaningful, lasting friendships. Our students learn together, pray together, and play together. Teachers have the time to learn about each student and their families. The staff, students, and parents become one big family that supports each other. The friendships that begin here often last a lifetime. To learn more about our programs and the opportunities that we can provide your child, contact the school office at (814) 938-4224 or stop by to visit us at 205 North Chestnut Street, Punxsutawney. Check us out on the web at sscdschool.com. ◆◆◆

Family & Tradition, God & Faith Come Together at SSCD Catholic School S

aints Cosmas & Damian Catholic School has a long history, and many families in the Punxsutawney area have sent generations of children to the school. Indeed, when conversation turns toward the school – universally referred to as “SSCD” – people often use the words “family” and “tradition” to describe their experiences as SSCD parents, or grandparents, or teachers. Others use “God” and “faith” as they talk about the school and their SSCD experiences. Indeed, SSCD’s atmosphere and environment are mentioned as often as the school’s devoted teachers and quality education. When the time came for Joe and Kerri Presloid to send their oldest son, Tyler, to school, they explored private school options, including SSCD; however, young Tyler had ideas of his own: “I want to go where my dad and uncles went.” Even as a youngster, Tyler recognized a family heritage, so for the Presloids, the SSCD family tradition won the day – as it has for other area families through the years. Tyler, a graduate of Penn State Erie and an electrical engineer, attended Saints Cosmas & Damian from first through eighth grade, and two younger brothers followed in his footsteps, just as he had followed those of his father and uncles – Ryan, now at Penn State Erie, studying mechanical engineering, and Ben, who attended SSCD from preschool through fifth grade. Kerri is SSCD’s preschool teacher and, after “subbing” for a few years, has taught full time at the school for six years. As both a parent and a teacher, Kerri is enthusiastic about SSCD and urges people to learn more about the school. “I love the school – it’s wonderful,” she says, “People don’t realize the quality education that students get there. It gives them a good start.” Kerri points out that the bottom-line aspect of sending a child to SSCD needs to be emphasized: “People don’t realize how affordable the school is.” She also emphasizes another facet of the SSCD community. “As a parent, as a teacher, I have a family feeling there,” she concludes, adding that “I met my best friends there.” Stephanie Hall attended SSCD from kindergarten through eighth grade. Her daughter, Grace, is an alumna of the school, and her son, Sawyer, who has been enrolled at SSCD since preschool, will enter fifth grade when the 2016-17 school year begins. “My children are the fourth generation of the family to go to SSCD, so it’s a longstanding tradition with us,” she says. “Since my parents were so active in the school, I grew up there – pretty much year round!” “I believe a Catholic school education gives the kids such a solid foundation – a high academic foundation and a solid moral foundation,” Stephanie continues. “I think the whole atmosphere of the school provides a good foundation for life.” Stephanie’s memories of being a student at SSCD extend into the present. Today, her best friends are those from her years at the school. “I can’t narrow my time at SSCD down to one memory – I can’t,” she says. “It’s the strong family environment of the school, and the relationships that I built

McCleary Business Machines, Inc.

there.” Stephanie adds that her parents’ best friends are also those whom they met at SSCD. Members of Justin Riggie’s extended family attended SSCD, and Justin himself is an alumnus of the school, having attended classes there from kindergarten through seventh grade. His daughter, Teaghan, was a student at the school for grades one through three. “It’s kind of a family tradition at this point,” he says, “and I wanted to send my daughter to the school.” Justin feels that SSCD, with its smaller class sizes, can offer a better education than public schools and that students, including his daughter, are academically further ahead of their peers, especially in math and reading. In addition to the academic advantages of a Catholic school education, Justin recalls the fun and good times that he had at SSCD: “I remember being there all the time, running around in the grass and the parking lot and having a good time.” Justin also talks with fondness of the parish’s annual lawn festival and about his grandmother, who worked in the kitchen, and his aunt, who was a festival volunteer. “I just remember that we always had fun,” he concludes. Jim Simmons attended SSCD for the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. His son, Joseph, is a recently minted SSCD alumnus, having been promoted from the seventh grade at the end of the 2015-16 school year. Joseph had been at the school since being enrolled as a preschooler. For Jim, the decision to send Joseph to SSCD was based on both tradition and the type of education offered by the school. “I went there, and I felt that faith-based education was important,” he says. In addition, having his son attend a hometown school was a practical convenience – Jim lives across the street from the school. Justin Crago – husband of Jessica Lowmaster – was a student at SSCD from kindergarten through fourth grade. Justin and Jessica’s children have followed in their father’s grade school footsteps. “All five of our children went to SSCD,” says Jessica. Their oldest daughter, Lily, attended the school from second through sixth grade, and their son, John Isaac, attended SSCD from kindergarten through seventh grade and became an SSCD alumnus when he was promoted at the end of the 2015-16 school year. Three younger daughters will walk the SSCD halls during the 2016-17 academic year: Maria will enter sixth grade, Katherine will begin fifth grade, and Johanna – the youngest member of the Crago family – will be a third grader. Maria and Katherine began their SSCD adventures as kindergarteners, and Johanna began hers as a preschooler. “My children love the school,” says Jessica, who also expressed her fondness for the school. “The school has a real close, family environment. I can go to the teachers about anything, and they will go out of their way to help.” “To sum it up, I think that students get a better education at a small school,” she says. Terry Myers is not an alumna of SSCD; however, the

SSCD School Thanks Local Family Business

embers of the SSCD School family recently gathered to thank a local family business for its support of the school’s scholarship programs. Monsignor Joseph Riccardo, Principal Jessica Dinger, and SSCD students thanked Fred Roberts of Frank Roberts & Sons, Inc., for the company’s donation to two scholarship programs that benefit Punxsutawney area students through its participation in Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program. The Roberts’ Corporation has been a long-standing supporter of the Punxsutawney community and Saints Cosmas & Damian Parish. Among the first to participate in the Commonwealth’s EITC program, the company has funded hundreds of scholarships that benefitted students enrolled at SSCD over the years. The school’s gratitude goes out to the Roberts family for its continued leadership and support.

Pennsylvania’s EITC program provides a way for businesses to put their state tax dollars to work for the schools in their local communities. Businesses that would like to participate are encouraged to contact the SSCD business office at (814) 938-6540 or the school office at (814) 9384224. EITC scholarships are available to families of all faiths, and the application guidelines are very generous – a family with two dependent children can earn up to $106,890 annually and still qualify for a scholarship. Applications for EITC scholarships for the 2016-17 school year are still available through The Children’s Scholarship Fund of Pennsylvania. Please contact the church or the school for more information. The application deadline is August 31, 2016. ◆◆◆

In The Know with Fr. Joe by Fr. Joseph Krupp

uestion: Dear Fr. Joe: Someone told me that, as Catholics, we are supposed to send our kids to Catholic schools. We are wondering if it’s really worth the financial struggle; are we obligated to do this? Answer: Thank you for asking this: it’s quite the important issue. I’ve been blessed to serve as a priest for a little more than seventeen years, and every assignment I’ve been given in that time has had a school connected to it. Over the years, I’ve really come to see that Catholic schools are a great gift God offers us; a gift that we often overlook. Is Catholic education a sacrifice? Of course. If it’s not, you’re doing it wrong. Catholic education, for many people, is a great sacrifice. It’s a sacrifice for the teachers who, in my experience, are paid significantly less than their public school counterparts. It’s a sacrifice for the parish that the school is tied to, as that parish commits no small amount of its resources toward running, improving and supporting the school. It’s a sacrifice for parents who choose to work to come up with the money needed to pay the tuition. It’s a sacrifice for the students who often are in a building that is not as nice as the public school options. Catholic education always has been and always will be a sacrifice. The question is: is it one you are called to? I’d like to offer you a three-, possibly four-, step process to help you determine whether or not you and your family are called to be a part of a Catholic school. First (and this is a shocker), you should pray. You personally should pray, and you and your spouse should pray. This prayer should, in my opinion, take the form of a simple question: “God, are you calling us to send our child (children) to a Catholic

Q

school?” I remember when I was in seminary, I spoke to a priest about some of my fears in regard to being a priest. I caught myself articulating what I thought was the core question, “Do I have what it takes to be a priest?” He said something in response to that which changed my life. “Of course you don’t have what it takes to be a priest, but that is not the question. The question is, ‘Are you called to be a priest?’” I’ve never forgotten the abject power of that simple question. The same principle applies here: Are you being called to send your child to a Catholic school? If so, put aside fears and worries and push forward. A key part of the process of asking God that question is to listen for the answer. God may give it to you in the quiet of your heart (note: quiet time needed here!), or he may give you the answer through the process of finding out if it’s possible – who knows how? The key is this: Ask the question and listen for the answer. The next step is to evaluate. Look at your finances and see what you can do and what you can’t. Please note that this is something for which you may be called to sacrifice “wants.” My dad and mom always gave us kids the speech about making sure to separate “wants from needs.” Look, too, at any special needs your child may have in order to present that information to the school later. Once you have this information ready, head on over to the local Catholic school and set up a time to ask questions. Getting to the school is the next step. Get a tour of the place. Ask your questions. Find out their Mass schedule. Inquire about adoration and community service. If you know you’ll be needing financial assistance, ask direct questions about that. If you know your child will need special pro-

SSCD — What’s in a Name?

s. Cosmas & Damian Church celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2010. The church’s historical roots extend to August 26, 1885, when Father Herman Clement Wienker blessed and laid the cornerstone of the new building at 6 o’clock in the morning. At this time, Father Wienker also revealed the saintly patronage after which he decided to name the church, and in doing so, went against the grain of the day’s common practice. During this time, priests often waited to name a new church until the bishop arrived for its dedication. Generally, the church’s name was derived from the feast day that coincided with the day that the bishop came to the dedication; however, Father Wienker did not want to wait – plus, he had another notion for naming the church. His brother was a Benedictine monk in Great Britain, and out of respect and admiration for him, Father Wienker named the church after the name his brother had chosen in his religious life – Cosmas. St. Cosmas and St. Damian were early Christian physicians and martyrs whose feast is celebrated on September 26. They were twins, born in Arabia, who practiced the art of healing in the seaport of Ægea, now Ayash, on the Gulf of Iskanderun in Cilicia, Asia Minor. Ss. Lawn Festival Tradition Began as Ice Cream Social

The ladies of the SSCD Catholic Daughters of the Americas began and organized the first parish gathering on the church lawn in 1939. The Cake and Ice Cream Social was meant to be a gathering of the parish to socialize and enjoy fun and fellowship together. The original philosophy has continued in each successive lawn festival. The ladies’ famous cake and ice cream stand is still going strong and remains a vital part of the SSCD Lawn Festival celebration.

The parishioners of SSCD are eternally grateful to the ladies of the CD of A for their seventy-seven years of dedication to the annual lawn festival and to the SSCD Catholic School. Thank you, ladies! The SSCD Catholic Daughters of the Americas (Court St. Rita #353 – Unity and Charity) offer the following prayer to Saint Rita: “O God, Who communicated such great grace to Saint Rita that she imitated your example and bore in her heart and on

her countenance the sacred marks of your love and passion; God, we beg you, by her merits and intercession, that we may love our enemies and ever contemplate with deep contrition the sorrow of your passion. Who lives and reigns world without end. Amen.” The local Court St. Rita #353 was organized in Punxsutawney on January 26, 1919. ◆◆◆

retired teacher spent “at least” thirty years of her thirty-four-year teaching career at Saints Cosmas & Damian, where she was also the school’s principal for three years (while still teaching). Her five children – Greg Myers, Renee Zettle-Sterling, Dawn MyersRoedel, the late Tommy Zettle, and Christopher Myers – all attended SSCD through the eighth grade, and her grandson, Landon (Christopher’s son), will enter fifth grade at SSCD when school begins in the fall. Terry’s Catholic school education – elementary school, high school, and college – and her experience at SSCD give her a unique and authoritative perspective on the importance of faithbased education in general and education at SSCD in particular. “As a parent, I wanted my children in a school atmosphere similar to the home atmosphere – similar to the morals and standards that they were taught at home,” she says. “Religion was the foundation of everything they were taught at home, and I wanted that emphasized at their school.” “As a teacher, I knew from my own experience that this would happen at a Catholic school,” she continues. “It was important that I teach at a Catholic school to make sure it did happen.” Terry also touts the family atmosphere that she found in Catholic schools as a student, as a teacher, and as a parent. “I just think the Catholic school system is like a family – a school family, but still a family,” she says. “Teachers are conscientious at SSCD

and go out of their way to help students,” Terry continues. “I think that it’s more than just a job – yes, it’s more than a job.” Born and raised in Punxsutawney, Liz LaBance has been a teacher at SSCD for more than thirty-five years. “I have spent most of my teaching career there,” says Liz, who clearly and passionately espouses the advantages of a Catholic school education. “In our world today, students need to learn, yes, but they also need to have values along with their learning,” she says, “and learning revolves around faith and our relationship with God.” Liz points out that an advantage that Catholic schools have over some schools is that they are not legally prohibited from bringing God into the classroom. “You cannot relate all that is happening in our world today to God and faith in a public school,” she says, “and we have to include God in anything we talk about.” Family and tradition, God and faith, devoted teachers and quality education – Saints Cosmas & Damian Catholic School offers many parents just what they are looking for in a school for their children. A pillar of the Punxsutawney area, the school has sent generations of students on to middle school and high school, on to college and careers – students who, regardless of where they go or what they accomplish, remain alumni of SSCD, the school that gave them, in two parents’ words, “a good start” and “a good foundation for life.” ◆◆◆

grams, ask about that. See if they have a program where you can volunteer at the school (or parish) in exchange for tuition assistance. If, after that, you don’t feel you have the information you need, you can do a next step and ask to meet with the pastor. Walk him through your decision process thus far and see if he can’t pray with you and show you resources/ possibilities that the school didn’t know about or share with you. If, in the end, you do these things and come to the conclusion that you cannot “do” Catholic school, what are your choices? Religious education. Every parish has a Catholic education program: a place where kids are formed in their faith, usually on Sunday or some other day. Be sure and check that out. The reason we have these programs is because some people are simply not called to Catholic school and this is a beautiful way to experience the joy of growing in our faith. Your parish more

than likely has a youth group. Check that out and see if it doesn’t help you with your decision. To be honest, it’s hard for me not to use this article to tell you how much I loved and love the experience of being in a Catholic school as a priest. It regularly blows me away to be around employees at the school and parents who scrape and sacrifice so that the kids can grow in love and knowledge of Jesus and the world our Father made. I could write a whole article just about that. You know, as I think about it, I might just do that. Keep watching this space to find out. Enjoy another day in God’s presence! If you have questions you’d like Father Joseph Krupp – “Fr. Joe” – to consider answering in Faith magazine, please write to: “In the Know with Fr. Joe,” Faith Magazine, 429 E. Grandview Blvd. Erie, PA 16504, or send an email to JoeInBlack@priest.com. ◆◆◆
