EDITOR’S LETTER HW

Colour is important. It determines our mood and our productivity. Science tells us that each colour is associated with a specific vibrational frequency. When there’s a predominance of one or two colours in our environment, that vibrational frequency – and the characteristics or qualities associated with that frequency – will tend to influence the activities conducted in that environment – and the attitude of those in it, and even around it. This issue is all about colour in both the traditional and nonconservative sense. It’s about spaces and homes that are full of life and vivacity, while our extensive Paint Without Restraint feature is literally about how to bring more colour and textures into the home through unique paint treatments. The rest of the issue is buzzing with liveliness too; Architect Konrad Buhagiar’s personal library, inspired by a combination of strong emotions and bright landscapes (page 052), Jennifer Jo Barth’s ‘Influence’ feature on page 056, plus Melina Scodannibio and Eliza Costabel’s article on creating a lush tropical hideaway (page 080). Add the great home ideas, trends and interior innovation, and we’ve got ourselves a wildly colourful issue, perfect to enjoy under the bright blue sky!

VEJVI’S LAMPS Artist and designer Torbjörn Vejvi’s pendant lamps are handcrafted from solid blocks of maple. The designer turns his lamps on a lathe and paints them as they spin, producing subtle gradients and bold blocks of colour.

TRAVELBOX Austrian design firm Juust’s new fun Travelbox lets users tote around a pop-up hotel wherever they go. At just 60 kilos, the box unfolds to reveal a comfy bed, chair, table, storage, and even a bicycle. Packed in wood and aluminium, the Travelbox can be shipped anywhere, bringing the comforts of home to any destination.

LINA LIGHT The Line Light by Rosie Li has been designed to create airy geometric forms. The all-brass modular lighting system has minimal fasteners and cable suspension. Each shape has its own set of spherical hubs while sizes are determined by round rods used interchangeably throughout the series. By scaling rod lengths, Lina fixtures can grow or contract to fit into any space.

ACUTE STOOLS ZERO ENERGY TABLE The Zero Energy Table absorbs and releases thermal energy depending on the temperature of the room. It’s designed to absorb excess heat when the temperature in the room exceeds 22C. It also releases the heat back into the space when the temperature drops below 22C, working like thermostat-controlled heating.

Brave Space Design’s new line of Acute Stools are made from smoothly bevelled lengths of sustainably sourced bamboo. Each stool’s seat is composed of three pieces of wood set in a triangular pattern, while they stand on three legs made from epoxy painted steel.

DIGITALLY FABRICATED VASES Architect Zaha Hadid and designer Gareth Neal have collaborated to create digitally fabricated wooden vases, which mimic handcrafting techniques. The designs reflect Hadid’s signature aesthetics, and combine experimental shapes with functional design. Using Hadid’s digitally studio’s advanced computer modelling software, the two have created sculptural vases that play with the idea of traditional manufacturing processes and simulate hand-making through digital imitation. 025

This issue is all about dynamic and fluid interiors. We begin with a contemporary Mediterranean Birkirkara house by Architect Bernard Vella, where he forges an impressive relationship between old and young, indoor and outdoor (page 028). SPACES HW n seeing this Birkirkara house for the first time, Architect Bernard Vella says, ‘It was the kind of place that you could just immediately see working. It had a history to it, great proportions and the line of sight went straight through from the entrance doorway to the garden.’

O

Originally one of the oldest palazzos in Birkirkara, the property was later subdivided into three residences. The homeowners purchased one of these portions with its garden, which included two big rooms at the ground floor level (now the entrance and dining room) and the other two above them at first floor (now the master bedroom and dressing/en-suite bathroom). Once purchased, the architect was given carte blanche to realise the interpretation of his vision: ‘‘Inside the property is a huge contrast to the busy road outside; once the door is closed, the roaring instantly switches to peaceful tranquility. I wanted to emphasise that. I didn’t want anything forced for the interior, but rather something contextual. I wanted it to be Mediterranean and contemporary, without departing from its history. I strove to strike that balance between old and young so that there would be a relationship between them. It was of consequential importance to integrate the garden with the interior without the over-usage of glass. I wanted the garden to be discovered, yet at the same time easily and seamlessly.’ This was achieved primarily through the architect’s attention to the design of the back extension to allow the palazzo’s back elevation to remain visible and continuous with the rest of the neighbouring elevation so that its presence could still be felt. This was also the case with the garden wall (eventually becoming the only masonry wall left in stone), which was another reason the architect opted to leave it bare inside the extension. This way, the original palazzo’s components were retained and can be felt in the house, still speaking their part of the story. Further, the continuation of the flooring material (concrete outside and polished concrete inside) contributed to the seamless overall effect. The external flooring also needed a gradient in order to flawlessly meet the profiles of the large sliding glass doors.

The bedrooms were two huge rooms, but the challenge lay in creating the walk-in ensuite and dressing area without effecting the proportions of the master bedroom. Here, Bed from The House Shop, Throw on chair from BoConcept

The mirror-cladded wall makes it appear as if it’s not there. With the polished Maltese tiled floor, free-standing bath and extensive wardrobe, the bathroom offers a chic dressing room feel. Light rushes in from the two large apertures to cast a play of light over the room, offering spaciousness and movement. The wardrobe gives the bathroom warmth, but also allows the flooring to continue on underneath and between its steel legs. This, alongside the floor’s reflection in the mirror, makes the items in the room appear as if they’re floating, and with the room’s simple materials and colours, the tiles takes centre stage. Here, Brass and marble vanity by R Lautier Workshop, Side table next to bath by R Lautier Workshop, Cylinder blocks from Habitat - The Atrium

With the essential cube shape of the kitchen/living area, the different natural light sources left a dark patch over the kitchen. This was opened up with a skylight so that light now spills into the area evenly. The upstairs rooms were one of the architect’s biggest dilemmas: ‘The bedrooms were two huge rooms that I loved, but the challenge lay in creating the walk-in ensuite and dressing area without effecting the proportions of the master bedroom. There was the potential for total comfort and functionality here, so it was a matter of working out a way to achieve them both.’

The solution came through cladding a bathroom wall in mirror, which makes it appear as if it’s not there. Now, with its polished Maltese tiled floor, free-standing bath and extensive wardrobe, this bathroom offers a chic dressing room feel. Light rushes in from the two large apertures - one facing the street, the other the garden - to cast a play of light over the room, offering spaciousness and movement. 033

The timber apertures were all replaced with Iroko wood painted in a muted grey-green colour, while the sliding door aluminium frames are in the same colour, adding to the overall earthy feel to the house. Further to the colour scheme, all wood found at ground level is varnished in matte to offer the illusion that it’s unvarnished, while the concrete flooring and natural stone wall give the interiors a natural look. This Birkirkara home is an architectural feat, forging an impressive relationship between old and young, indoor and outdoor. Here, Architect Bernard Vella’s initial vision of an easy and seamless contextual Mediterranean haven within a busy village core has been realised. In the meantime, the homeowners are living in a reposeful haven complete with all the comforts of a true home, yet without a chance of forgetting its incredible past.

The meeting of divergent tastes: Amy’s polished marble flooring meets Alan’s unpolished concrete ceiling. The custom-designed modern fireplace by Carlo Schembri contrasts with the reclaimed vintage style furniture

W

ith our hectic lifestyles, it’s much easier for us to have a designer who knows our style and who we can depend on. We find the pieces that we love, but then it’s difficult for us to put it all together to make it look good. Carlo is excellent at this.” Enter Interior Designer Carlo Schembri with his gift of understanding his clients in order to create distinct home interiors. The requirement when house-hunting last February was unique in that the couple essentially needed a warehouse for their shop-cafewine bar, Talbot & Bons. Ideally they would find a large basement of a house where they could also reside. Being close to the shop was a must, and when they found this corner house (still in shell form) just a few minutes away from it, they bought it immediately. Carlo Schembri had already designed the shop for them - a uniquely sophisticated urban style that still remains unmatched on the island. Amy gravitates towards the elegant part of Carlo’s design for the shop, while Alan is more attracted to the urban, utilitarian nuances of it. The same would go for the home, and thus, compromises were made on both sides to create this individually elegant and eclectic house. Alan, “I like raw materials, but I still like the space I’m living in to be warm. Amy wanted the polished marble flooring while I wanted the unpolished concrete ceiling. She got the classic dining table, but I got the modern pendant lamp hanging over it. It’s all a total contrast, but somehow it works.” Amy, “I really do prefer the elegant look, but I also like a home that looks lived in. Warmth is important to me. I like the eclectic look, but not the messy look. I’ll probably live in this house forever so I really have to be comfortable in it!”

SPACES HW Carlo was the perfect happy medium between the two totally divergent styles and was given a lot of free hand to design the space. He custom-designed the fireplace, which plays a large role in the open plan kitchen/living/dining area. It was also an element that Alan really wanted for the warmth and ambience it would create. The layout heavily hinged on the couple’s love for entertaining, when they can find the time for it. The majority of the furniture throughout the home was purchased from a company that uses reclaimed timber, which brings in vintage character. Carlo’s colour scheme of earthy neutrals and muted shades allows for the eclectic look to prevail without being jarring. Due to their extremely long work stretches, the couple needed bedrooms that are comfortable, yet don’t require maintenance. ‘In the few hours that we have off from the shop, we really need to rest well so the master bedroom and en suite were really important to us. It needed to be a haven that didn’t require much to make it look neat.’ Amy also studies music, so it was important for her to have an area where she can carry out her lessons in peace with space.

The next project for this dynamic couple: their outdoor areas - both the roof garden (which offers an expansive view) and the side entrance area. Alan: ’Once we get down to doing the roof garden, this will most likely be the place where we spend all our wind-down time in the summer months. It’s definitely an incentive for us to find more time to relax!’ 042

ompleted in 2014 to a strict budget, the concept of this twobedroom penthouse blends custom lighting and cantilevered interior architecture with adapted off-the-shelf furniture. The ensuite bathroom found adjacent to the generously proportioned master bedroom is finished in a fresh mix of white and colourful accessories. 049

HOME LIBRARY HW

f you were to ask me what the colours of my library are, it would, at first, seem like a bizarre question, but I would not hesitate to say that they are most definitely the colours of summer: yellow and blue and white - the ochre of limestone rocks and rusticated walls, the ultramarine of the Mediterranean Sea and the bright white walls of cool and shaded courtyards. This is what springs to mind when I think of my books and I’ll try to explain why.

I

The foundations of my library were laid in those prolonged hot summer months that separated one academic year from the other; the slow-paced, lingering days that were our school holidays, days that were all identical except for the changing of the direction of the wind, the alternating rih fuq and rih isfel, and the size of the breaking waves that determined how long, and how far out my brothers and I could swim during our daily visits to the rocky beach at the foot of the street where we lived. Those were the awkward adolescent years following our ‘O’ Levels when Malta was still newly-forged, still isolated from the rest of Europe, and slowly and clumsily negotiating its traditions, its centuries-old spiritual values, with an uncertain and alien future. The nation, as it painfully divested herself of foreign supremacy, was already assuming a virile selfdetermination and materialistic drive, too fresh, however, to be noticed then. In those youthful years, a carefree air still dominated our lives, protected by the strange, subdued, maternal beauty that characterised Malta in those pre-consumerist days. 053

HW HOME LIBRARY

Distractions were few and simple. Only reading was as powerful, all-consuming and entertaining as swimming. Our time was divided equally between physical activity on the beach and its intellectual counterpart in the shady interiors, or in the walled and leafy garden of our house in Sliema. Strategically positioned between an open door and open window to catch the breeze, I indulged in that solitary activity that projected my reality out and far away from the small and sleepy world we inhabited. This displacement, however, was not only geographical. My father, a devout Catholic who believed deeply in the political and social mission of the Church, was my unprompted book dealer and, as I look back on the novels that he brought home for me to read, I can only admire his determination to throw me into the deep end. Camus, Greene, Mauriac and Boll lured me like a moth to a flame, seducing me with the scarlet and black ‘existentialist’ mysteries of life: desire and control, the imperatives of ‘is’ and ‘seems’, the fluidity of good and evil, and the overlapping definitions of sinner and saint. Those obscure ambiguities were like fodder for my hungry head and matched both my inquisitive nature and the secret searching typical of my unsettled age. But thankfully it was balanced by a routine dive into the icy-cool water of early June, or into the flat-calm, silky September sea. Then I was plunged into a blue moment that was ageless, and thrown back into a 054

perfect, vigorous present. Resurfacing, and looking towards the shore, I would rediscover, through salt-blurred vision, the bright sunlight reflecting on the ochre rusticated sea-walls, the undulating row of two-storey terraced house above and the sharp shadows they cast on the rounded rocks and the fishfilled pools at the water’s edge. My library grew throughout my university years, becoming robust with volumes on architectural history and theory. It was only several years later, however, when I moved to Rome to pursue my studies in Architectural Restoration, that I discovered in the Eternal City the perfect backdrop for my wistful musings on the uncertainties of life combined with the sensual pleasures that it offers. Albertina, my girlfriend, introduced me to Italian literature of the Modern period, to Moravia and Brancati, Vittorini and Pavese. But no books express better to me that mixture of sensuous summer light and colour and the tragedy at the heart of life than Yourcenar’s Memoirs of Hadrian and Morante’s L’Isola di Arturo. The grief of Hadrian at the death of his young lover Antinoo, and that of Arturo when he is old enough to comprehend his father’s betrayal are set against the same poetic pale limestone landscape that shapes life on Malta. I could say that, at its core, my library is fashioned by a similar combination of strong emotions and bright landscapes.

Various start-up companies now offer a bumper crop of garden gadgets to make it easier to grow food in your home. Pikaplant has designed a shelf that automatically waters flowers, perennials, and ferns, so you don’t have to. The steel frame of the low-maintenance indoor garden is topped with a glass reservoir. It’s electricity-free: all it requires to work is a monthly topping up of the shelf’s reservoir with several litres of water. The water is distributed by gravity through discreet plastic tubing toward capillary mats on the shelves’ surfaces. www.pikaplant.com The fully automated hydroponic system Niwa waters, feeds, and makes sure plants have optimal growing conditions 24/7. www.getniwa.com

LUSH TROPICAL HIDEAWAY LANDSCAPE AND OUTDOOR LIFESTYLE SPECIALISTS MELINA SCODANIBBIO AND ELIZA COSTABEL SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCES FROM DESIGNING FARAWAY TROPICAL GARDENS TO HELP CREATE A SERENE OUTDOOR OASIS BACK HOME Words: Landscape Designer Melina Scodanibbio Visuals: Interior Architect Eliza Costabel

W

hen we landed our dream job to landscape a six-acre luxury resort along the Indian Ocean of the Kenyan coast, we had quite a learning curve to brush up on our knowledge of sub-tropical plants. It took two years, a ground up nursery, a huge team of gardeners and thousands of plants sourced from every corner of the country to complete the project. Today, the gardens have become the destination of regular tours by the Kenya Horticultural Society, as well as the lush surroundings for holiday-makers from around the world. Back in Malta, with our tropical adventure under the belt, we found that many houses with shady yards could lend

080

themselves perfectly to this exotic style. The lush resort feel can be transposed to an intimate home setting provided it responds to certain key requisites - enclosed, sheltered and shaded. Many so-called tropical or indoor plants thrive in our climate, but, both for aesthetic and environmental reasons, are best limited to a small-scale. With the right plants, layout, decorative features, irrigation and shading conditions, it is possible to create a verdant tropical sanctuary and a feeling of year-round vacation in your backyard.

GARDEN HW THE LOOK

The hallmark of tropical gardens is an abundance of textured plant layering, with bold foliage, vivid colours and heady scents. Plan a layout that gives a sense of discovery, a series of interconnected spaces which slowly reveal the garden as a whole. Depending on the overall look of the house, opt for organic shapes, or a more linear design, with the exuberant planting spilling out of its confines. Add the sound of flowing water or a natural plunge pool surrounded by lush planting, and the look of your urban oasis is complete. In our project in the middle of nowhere, where outdoor furnishings had to be hand-crafted by local artisans, we have come to appreciate the beauty of simple natural materials, like woven raffia, raw cotton and whitewashed woods, to achieve a chic and serene outdoor decor.

Just like in a forest, the taller trees and feature plants provide structure and shade, anchoring the finer textures of the midsize plants and low-lying ground covers. Plants with bold foliage and stems, like the huge leaved Alocasia, Strelitzia alba and Schefflera actynophylla are attention grabbers and create accents within a composition. Colour and interest is given by the chromatic variety in the leaves and flowers and their vast array of sizes and shapes. The dominating tones, aside from various shades of brilliant green, are flashes of red and orange given by Canna indica, Abutilon and Clivia. These are complemented by the paler hues of the fragrant Plumeria, Cestrum, Hymenocallis and Brugmansia which fill the air with their scent. Even culinary herbs such as coriander, lemongrass and ginger find their place in pots and add the finishing touch.

IS MOULD DRIVING YOU UP THE WALL? Mould can grow on almost any substance when moisture such as condensation is present. Moulds, when they produce, make spores which can be carried by air currents and when these land on a moist surface they begin to grow. Mould feeds on nutrients such as cellulose which can be found in most papers and paints. Crown Trade Steracryl has a proven pedigree in the prevention of mould growth. Stringent testing by the PRA (The Paint Research Association) has found it to be an effective mould inhibitor over long periods of time.

It’s not just paint.

2014 GRAND VIN DE HAUTEVILLE VIOGNIER - D.O.K. SUPERIOR MALTA

2014 GRAN CAVALIER BARREL FERMENTED CHARDONNAY - D.O.K. SUPERIOR MALTA

“For this delicate, succulent seafood recipe, a juicy, ripe, dry white wine that’s crisp and refreshing will pair up perfectly. This award-winning Maltese Viognier with its concentration of exotic fruit and its soft, full-flavoured mouth feel, will work really well with the seafood and its creamy mascarpone and hazelnut brown butter accompaniment.”

“A full-flavoured seafood dish that will require an equally full-flavoured dry white wine to accompany it; preferably one that’s not too sharp or acidic. This soft gold medalwinning Chardonnay, with its subtle hint of oak, will cope admirably with the chargrilled seafood and the burnt spring onion flavours. Its rich, ripe fruitiness will also marry well with the numerous spices and seeds in this delicious dish.”
