This Issue. When putting together a home we often think of space and light, of big pieces of furniture, the size of the kitchen island and the power of the shower. These are all important, of course, but also key to creating a great room is texture - it is what makes a space come alive, lifting it from flat to one that is exciting and a joy to be in. Which is why this issue’s theme is texture and the three homes featured have used it to create a more interesting space. Our townhouse in Sliema started with great texture thanks to its old limestone walls but to this, concrete, wood and tiles have been used in an unusual way to create a wonderful feel-good home. The other two homes are resolutely modern which makes the use of texture all the more imperative. In these, a mix of materials, often with innate pattern, has been used to take them from sterile white boxes to homes you want to live in. If there is one room where texture is crucial it’s the bedroom, from fabrics that touch bare skin to those that come together give a sense of rest and relaxation. Turn to our bedroom special for lots of inspiration - and I hope you find the whole issue full of ideas you can take into your home...

DULUX COLOUR FOR 2020: TRANQUIL DAWN
Paint brand Dulux has just announced its Colour of the Year for 2020, the start of a new decade, and it’s a cool-tone shade of green that aims to help us ‘understand what it is to be human at a time when advances in technology are making us feel increasingly disconnected from each other’. Called Tranquil Dawn, it was selected by a panel of colour designers, trend forecasters, design specialists, architects and editors from around the world. Explained Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director, Dulux UK: ‘A new decade heralds a new dawn and the hazy pale green tones of Tranquil Dawn™ are calming and comforting just
when we need it most in our lives. Also looking to give us an antidote to our techfilled lives is Scandi brand BoConcept which has released its catalogue for the new season. A strong focus is on natural and organic forms which can be found in sculpture and prints as well lights such as the Pine Cone light (see left). Also pictured, is the new Augusta table and Vienna chairs which highlight craftsmanship, the exposed details aimed at connecting us with their human creators. The collection comes in two overarching colour themes - New Neutrals which is made up of pale wood, ceramic, concrete and white marble and almost pastels shades, and Dark Wonder, which starts with a base palette of soft blacks along with earthy tones and features dark leathers, suedes and velvets that sit beside black oak and marble, with brass, steel and glossy surfaces as accents. Anniversary Celebrations Designer Francis Sultana is marking his 10th year as a designer with the launch of a major furniture collection and the publication of a book, ‘Francis Sultana: Designs & Interiors’ in November. The book celebrates the work of the Maltese-born designer known for his flair with both shape and decoration and his ability to merge domestic spaces with often large-scale art and design collections. It showcases the sumptuous interiors of his own homes, including his stunning palazzo in Malta, as well as interior design projects and his furniture collections. Francis’s special anniversary furniture collection is called ‘Marie-François’ after his late mother and includes his love of natural and highly crafted materials and Baroque flourishes rooted in one of his favourite buildings, St Johns Co-Cathedral in Valletta. The Marie-François collection is on show at the David Gill Gallery, London from November 7 - 23. ‘Francis Sultana: Designs & Interiors’ is published by Vendome Press
CAFE COOL Mizzi Studio, which has offices in Valletta and London, has received plaudits for its new cafe overlooking the Serpentine Lake in London’s Hyde Park. An open, semi-transparent glass pavilion, it was conceived to be like a ‘serpent that comes out of the lake, a smiling stingray’, according to head Jonathan Mizzi, the architecture also evoking that traditionally seen in Japanese tea-houses. Materials include glass, terrazzo floors, blue tiles and metal, with the undulating roof milled out of one piece of foam in CNC and laminated in carbon fibre. Designed to respond to the movement of the lake, it has been hand-painted using specialist techniques, and is intricately textured on the underside with snakeskin-inspired, cofferlike dimples. The cafe forms part of a wider commission which will see Mizzi Studio transforming ten prestigious sites across London’s Royal Parks, with individually crafted, free-standing architectural structures, in partnership with artisan Italian café operators, Colicci.

t is a familiar scenario but with, perhaps, a less obvious ending. On moving into his first home in London, designer Michael Anastassiades needed some lights. ‘But I couldn’t find what I wanted – so I designed and made them myself,’ he says. This lighting collection resulted in his breakthrough moment. Today, he is highly-respected and sought after designer but at the time he was struggling to establish himself. ‘After I graduated I was very conscious that I wanted to design for industry but the designs that felt good to me often weren’t considered “right” for a lot of the companies and practices I approached,’ he explains. Wanting to show the pieces he had designed, he opened his home as an exhibition space during that year’s London Design Festival, and the reaction to the pieces such as the Tube chandelier, a sculptural light made from three long lines of LED diffuser, was so positive that it enabled him stop being a yoga instructor and establish his own brand and studio. Over the past 15 years, Michael has become a star in the lighting world, creating exciting and bold designs whose beautiful simplicity belies their technical difficulty. ‘I see design in a very distilled way,’ he says. ‘I like the idea that visual

information is subtracted, that you remove necessary things until you reach a point where the bare essence of the product is retained.’ Despite wanting to be a ‘creative person’ at an early age, when it came to further education, Cypriot-born Michael first bowed to his parents’ desire for him to take a degree that would lead to a safe job in finance or marketing. ‘It was not encouraged to take an art degree, or study something creative,’ says Michael. ‘The perception was always of a failed artist, never a successful one, so you needed to study something practical, something you could always go back to. So I chose a degree in civil engineering.’ However, while he was at London’s Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine he discovered the nearby Royal College of Art. ‘I was fascinated by what I saw; so many things that I could be doing rather than what I actually was,’ he says. ‘So, once I concluded my degree, I applied straight away to the Royal College, and that’s how I ended up in design.’ Today Michael’s work can found in permanent collections around the world including the Museum Of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and the MAK in Vienna. He has worked for a number of key brands including B&B Italia, Cassina, Herman Millier, Lobmeyr, Svenkst Tenn and Flos, the last arguably the most influential as he has created his most iconic designs with the market-leading Italian company. The partnership began in 2011 when Michael met the company’s CEO Piero Gandini briefly at the Euroluce Fair, and then shared a 20-minute taxi ride with him. ‘...he introduced me to his crazy sketchbook, there was actually the String Light concept... and we started,’ recalls Piero Gandini. Shown for the first time at the Milan Furniture Fair two years later, the String Lights, made from thin black electrical cord that draws geometric shapes in the air, are now an iconic piece of design. ‘Every time I take the train, I sit by the window and watch the series of perfectly parallel strings connecting the pylons, as we move at high speed,’ said Michael at the time, explaining his inspiration. ‘I love the way they divide the landscape and how spheres are occasionally beaded through the wires at random intervals. I also love how, in Mediterranean cultures, strings of lights are stretched between posts to mark an outdoor space for an evening party in a village square. And finally, I love how human ingenuity works around problems created by everyday things in the house (like switches and power points) that others have chosen to position where we don’t want them.’ One year later, Flos launched Michael’s now instantly recognisable IC lights collection featuring a blown glass diffuser balanced on a slim metal rod, the design inspired by a juggler at work. ‘Lighting is a very beautiful medium, very poetic,’ says Michael. ‘It has to satisfy the sculptural requirements, the space that it occupies but at the same time it has a different dimension. The light itself, the glow, it is really important – it has to work in both an on and off scenario.’ While he has focused on lighting, he has occasionally branched out into furniture. This year he designed a speaker for Bang & Olufsen that, like his lights, follows his pared back philosophy. The circular Beosound Edge resembles a sculpture - it was inspired by a coin on its side - and is both speaker and volume knob in one, the volume changing when one touches it. The speaker is discreet and disappears into the interior. ‘These were quite important points to start from; the idea of creating a monolithic object that doesn’t actually shout I’m a technology product,’ says Michael. It would fit well in his own apartment where he shuts technology away behind cupboard doors, with the TV sitting on the floor in order to be as unobtrusive as possible. ‘I am a person that actually feels very uncomfortable with technology around them in their living environment,’ he says. Not that Michael is at home a lot. He is a constant traveller, hopping on and off planes as he commutes between his studio and clients. This time is not wasted, however. ‘I carry my sketchbook everywhere,’ he says. ‘I have learned to adapt, to draw and sketch even on a flight or in an airport lounge. It’s about keeping your eyes open and observing things.’ 023

This year’s nine-day festival saw over 400 events and installations across the city. Here is a taste of what went on... ART IN THE CITY Large -scale installations that turn the city into a work of art have become a feature of LDF. Walking the line between craft and a practical design solution, Paul Cocksedge created Please Be Seated, undulating seating made from sanded scaffold boards that were cut and joined to make curves that rose above pedestrians like giant wooden waves. Artist Camille Walala transformed a street into Walala Lounge, a colourful set with sculptural benches and planters in her bright designs. Patternity, known for their geometrics in fashion and furniture, assembled Life Labyrinth outside Westminster Catheral, the monochrome cubes teamed with wild grasses and flowers for a serene space in amongst the bustle. At the V&A, Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, filled a garden with Bamboo Ring, a curving structure highlighting the sustainability and flexibility of the material.
100% DESIGN The vast exhibition space in west London once again thronged with people and exhibits. One of the highlights was the launch by Kirkby Design, which collaborated with Transport for London to recreate seven heritage moquette designs featured on the city’s Underground tube seats (above right). Another major exhibition was ‘A Sense of Finland’ in which a specially built eco log house was filled with the calm sounds of the forest and showcased Finnish furniture and lighting around sustainability and well-being (above left).
OUT OF THE ARCHIVES Three Verner Panton designs not put into production until now were launched during the festival. The Reflect and Hive lights, and Flex chair, were based on drawings found in the Panton archive. The designs are from Verpan, run by the designer’s widow and his daughter, and the only furniture and lighting manufacturer that solely produces Verner Panton products.
LITTLE ITALY I-MADE brought together 50 furniture and lighting designers from all over Italy; its aim to introduce the best of Italian design to those visiting the city. Those on show included Calligaris, Moltenic & C, Living Divani and Luceplan. As well, Giulio Cappelini paid homage to iconic Italian brands which have shaped the history of seating design exhibiting chairs from De Padova, Driade and Flexform among others.

MEET THE CREATIVES Peter Calamatta www.petercalamatta.com
Peter Calamatta has been Malta’s foremost horticultural expert for over 50 years, responsible for creating beautiful public planting displays and at the same time, broadcasting influential gardening programmes. He has written three books, his latest, ‘Gardening in ‘Malta; The Ultimate Gardening Guide for Malta and Gozo’ has just been published How did you first get interested in horticulture? My foray into the horticulture world came just by chance. I was a city boy both in Hamrun and then Valletta. My interest in plants was next to zero. However, I was young and loaded with certificates, 14 O levels and 4 A levels which for those days was a record. All I wanted to do was travel. So I applied for any rare scholarship that came along. The British Council issued a call for four and a half years in horticulture in the UK. I applied, got chosen and suddenly found myself working the land in Lymington [in Hampshire] and later in college at Writtle near Chelmsford [Essex]. I studied all facets of horticulture which included vegetable and fruit cultivation, ornamental trees and plants, biology and botany and a host of other subjects giving me a thorough grounding in all aspects of horticulture. Luckily I took well to the subject and from there onwards horticulture became my life.

After studying further landscape design and landscaping in California I switched my sights towards the beautification of Malta both in the private sector and the public one. I became a household name through my 45 years of uninterrupted broadcasts on radio and television and created the gardening revolution which is still ongoing and reached its peak with the setting up of the ELC consortium which under my leadership over the last 17 years has turned the whole of Malta and Gozo into a magnificent garden year round.
You returned to Malta to work at the Department of Agriculture - what did this entail? I was bound by contract to work for the department which had just launched a new section, the Horticulture section. From day one I was entrusted to build an industry which did not exist and which went well beyond traditional farming. Thanks to the United Nations Development Programme I had three UK experts to help me and slowly but surely created the protected cropping industry which entailed growing various crops under glass out of season. These included tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and aubergines, as well as mushrooms plus all kinds of flowers mainly carnations, gerberas and gladioli. Our success was immediate and we became leaders of quality at Covent Garden Market in London. That is until the fuel crisis ruined it all and made us uncompetitive in price. Luckily at the time the tourism industry was growing fast in Malta and we quickly switched our attention to the local market with great success.

PETER’S GARDENING TIPS KNOW YOUR SOIL The medium for all types of cultivation is the soil. Whether growing in the open ground or in containers you need to know what your soil is made up of as this will allow you to take corrective and enhancement measures to improve it so you achieve the desired results. If your soil is too dry and loose you will need to add a good compost to bind it together and increase its nutrient value. If you are growing in pots, add just peat to your soil, or better still commercial compost which already has the required nutrients. Keep in mind that you can make your own compost from discarded green waste and kitchen leftovers such as peels and raw vegetable matter. SOURCE YOUR SEEDS AND PLANT MATERIALS CAREFULLY Do not buy seeds and plants from shady sources. Go to a reliable retailer and for seeds check the sell-by dates. If using cuttings to propagate plant material, use only healthy sources which are free from pests and diseases.

better air quality, control of stress particularity in bad traffic conditions and the love for Mother Nature to whom we all owe our wellbeing. What is your favourite public space? My favourite public place is San Anton Gardens which is an oasis of peace, quietness and meditation. What are the defining characteristics of gardening in Malta? Making the correct choice of Mediterranean plants, the wise use of water, recycling plant material and preservation of the soil. Your favourite plants? There are many plants which I can call my favourites. In flowers, the gerbera is my absolute favourite; I introduced it to Malta in the late Seventies. In trees, my real number one is the olive tree which is the queen of trees, dating back to Biblical times. As for indoor plants, the Spatiphyllium is perhaps the most lush and hardy indoor flowering plant that lasts for years and years. In reality, I love all plants. What is your garden like? Sadly, I now do not have a garden because when our garden which included my garden centre and my house were needed by government for a public purpose my wife and I decided to downsize to an apartment in Portomaso as we were getting on in years. The truth is that all of Malta is my garden and I love it. Why did you want to write ‘Gardening in Malta’? It is my legacy to a life dedicated towards the beautification of my country. Putting humility aside, I can proudly say, in respect to the environment, that, while others just talked about it, I did it.

CONSERVE AND RECYCLE WATER In a country such as Malta where water is an expensive commodity, it is imperative that every drop of water should be used wisely. The law of building reservoirs with every building should be self- imposed. Holding surface tanks are also an option. Ration your first class water for your delicate plants and use second-hand water for the more hardy plants. INSTALL A DRIP IRRIGATION SYSTEM Modern irrigation systems are not expensive or difficult to install. If you include a timer and a solenoid valve the plants get watered by themselves even when you are abroad. This applies both to open ground cultivation and container gardening in courtyards and balconies. FEED YOUR PLANTS Like human beings plants need to be fed. Plant nutrients can be applied in several ways - they can be incorporated in the planting mix or added in liquid form to the irrigation system; they can be spread in a dry powder form on the surface and then watered in and they can be administered as foliar feed [applied directly to the leaves] while spraying. Play safe and go for a generic all-in -one fertiliser unless there is a specific problem in one of your plants. CONTROL PESTS AND DISEASES Keep a good eye open for pests and diseases and control them before they become a big problem - fungi and pests can destroy an entire crop in a matter of a few days. Use only biodegradable approved sprays, especially on edible crops. PRUNING FOR NEW LIFE Many plants, in particular fruit trees, need annual pruning to produce new shoots that will carry the buds for the next crop. Pruning is also necessary to shape plants such as in hedge work and topiary. LEARN YOUR PLANTS The list of Mediterranean plants is long and complicated. Do not try to memorise it in one go. Experiment and research a few new plants at a time. Eventually their names will become second nature to you. Learn their botanic name first then you can also use their common names. ESTABLISH BALANCE IN YOUR GARDEN A garden should be like a work of art. You can use several focal points to tie in your different areas of interest. Use colours to create hues and a three-dimensional effect. This knowhow is not learnt in a day nor by just reading a book. It grows on you in time correspondingly to your artistic flair. his house is as far removed from its predecessor as you can imagine. Before, a traditional single-storey Maltese house stood on this plot, its look blending into those around it. But no more. Today, gleaming black slate plays the supporting role for a smooth, curving front that rejoices in its starkness and simplicity. We were motivated by clever small space planning in Japan

for many years, the couple decided they wanted to start a new chapter in their lives and decided to do so in a very different style of home. The architectural designers of this Modernist-style building are Carlo Schembri Design Team. ‘Our design process started off by initially tackling the exterior design of the villa itself,’ says architectural designer, Ryan Calleja. ‘Indirectly, we were heavily inspired by two completely different media; on one hand, we knew that the design outcome needed to relate to the vernacular nature of the previous house whilst also respecting the surrounding urban landscape. Seemingly opposite to this premise, we also knew the design would need to signify the change as requested by the clients. As inspiration, we latched onto their own version of modern - adapting the Modernist principles that created many architectural masterpieces all over Malta and Gozo. ‘The final outcome is an amalgamation of these two trains of thought. The basic design language is extracted from Corbusieran principles, whilst the sweeping curves of the villa itself are inspired by the arches that mark off the entrances to many of the premises within the area. In this case, the arch is inverted and stretched along the horizontal plane of the villa, appreciated once you look up at the first floor as you are approaching the front door.’ The interior is similarly minimalist, following on from the exterior but also because the homeowners desired a place that was as pared back as possible, making it easy to keep clean and tidy, with a place for everything, much of it kept out of sight. The space combines a number of different materials, creating an interesting mix of textures. Key to the space is the walnut wood cladding. ‘It not only adds warmth but it also hides a number of openings that disappear once the doors are not in use, eliminating the visual clutter that normal doors would have brought to such a space, with an outcome that emphasises the horizontality of the space leading towards the pool area,’ says Ryan. The sofas in the living room have been placed so that those seated can easily chat to the cook in the kitchen. ‘This is something the client wanted very much, to be able to have a conversation between the two spaces,’ says Ryan. It all comes together to create a home that’s a perfect fit in every way.

uying and renovating a house in a new country often means melding cultures, taking what you know and are familiar with and blending this with the traditions and styles of one’s adopted home. In this townhouse in Sliema, the look is Sweden meets Malta, and the two styles which on the face of it are quite different - one created in a cold climate where forests and lakes abound; the other formed in extreme heat and a dry, almost arid terrain - come together beautifully to create a home that really feels like a place you can kick off your shoes and relax in. Texture is a feature, from the limestone walls to the contrast between the smoothness of concrete and lightly sanded oak and the modern Maltese tiles that flow seamlessly into parquet. A scattering of vintage pieces and pops of bright colour add a lively tone, as does the large scale palm leaf wallpaper in the living room. The owners of this home, Maria and Lahcene, moved from Sweden six years ago for work reasons and are now happily settled, with Maria the owner of store Fly the Fly Vintage. They rented for a few years in Valletta before buying this rundown townhouse that was just the right size. ‘We started looking at houses in Valletta; they were beautiful but enormous and there are just the two of us,’ says Maria. ‘We saw this house and we liked it. Kitchen: A major issue that had to be dealt with was humidity and in the basement water literally dripped down one wall. Today, the kitchen which leads out into the garden is one of Maria’s favourite rooms. New tiles but in a traditional Maltese pattern soften the hardness of the concrete and both work well with the oak units that have been lightly planed to keep a rustic feel Courtyard: The outside space is small but Maria and Lahcene wanted it to work hard - and it does. As well as a seating area - the cantilevered table gives a feeling of space - there is a pizza oven and barbecue, and at the end of the courtyard, a small pool. The deck, made of iroko, cleverly conceals storage

The table is cantilevered which allows the mid-century modern style chairs to sit cleanly beneath it. The couple had a clear idea of the style they wanted - a combination of rustic Scandi, Malta and vintage. ‘We both felt that we could create something unique, and that we were up to the challenge,’ says Maria. Joining them in their renovation adventure was spatial designer Sean Cassar of Design Hub Malta. He had already designed the Fly the Fly boutique for Maria and was commissioned to design the townhouse which is a short distance away. He took the couple’s brief and set about turning their ideas into reality, tweaking and amending where necessary. ‘He was very good at listening to what we wished for and sometimes, when it was hard to proceed with what we wanted, he found solutions,’ says Maria. One such issue was the use of wood - Maria and Lahcene’s initial thoughts blew the budget. ‘Unlike in Sweden, wood is very expensive here,’ says Maria. One solution was to use less costly wood and stain it, so creating the same effect as the more expensive material. The townhouse was originally two storeys with a basement, but Maria and Lahcene were able to put in a top floor which also gave them a roof terrace. This allowed the house to be slightly reconfigured - the second bedroom on the first floor was turned into a large ensuite bathroom consisting of both a walk-in shower and a free-standing bath. The guest bedroom moved upstairs. The townhouse also needed to be made more streamlined. On the ground floor, Sean removed an existing arch between the hallway and living room. ‘This opened up the room that otherwise felt fragmented,’ he says. Downstairs, in the basement kitchen, the floor between the kitchen and dining areas had to be evened out so the two spaces move 045

Ensuite bathroom: Oak and concrete feature here too. The copper mixers and double-sided mirrors which can be rotated were made bespoke. The two-tone concrete flooring makes for an interesting design feature. The balcony has become part of the bathroom, giving the room substantial storage

seamlessly from one space to another - not an easy task as it meant working with concrete, parquet and tiles. ‘All three have different depth at screed level so that had to be taken into account,’ says Sean. Maximising light was crucial and this was done by creating new windows and expanding existing ones. In the living room, windows were done with modern stained glass, adding pattern and colour to the space, as well as increasing light flow. The stained glass is one of a number of clever touches that can be found throughout. Within the thick limestone walls are niches which create an interesting pattern, as well as providing places for storage, and for lit candles which create a mellow ambience. In the bathroom, the finely crafted copper taps and steel mirrors are handmade. ‘In Malta there are still craftsman who could do this - I’m not sure we could have had this done in Sweden,’ says Maria. The rebuild and renovation took two-and-a-half years and like any large project there were some testing times, but the end result a house that feels like home. ‘We are very happy,’ says Maria. ‘Some things had to change and we had to make compromises, but the house is a bit of Sweden with the spirit of Malta, just as we wanted it.’

WITH A FOCUS ON MINIMALISM, THIS SEMIDETACHED BUNGALOW HAS MAXIMISED ON FORM AND FUNCTION TO CREATE A PEACEFUL RETREAT

eaving the hustle and bustle of nearby Mosta for the open vistas that can be enjoyed from the outskirts of San Pawl Tat-Targa is not much of a journey in physical terms, but for the homeowners of this monochromatic, sleek, semi-detached bungalow, it was definitely a new, leaner chapter, with a shift in focus towards calm and wellbeing. ‘The family wanted a home that would encourage them to relax a little more, to encourage peace of mind and simplicity,’ explains architect Matthew Mercieca of MJMDA who took charge of the project. Upon entering the property through the white gate, a decked pathway leads up a few steps to the front door. Recessed from the main road and low-rising, the house with its grey façade, ceramic large format cladding, and barely-there kitchen balcony, is a picture of discreet, pared-back style. A quick glimpse to the left reveals the cool, blue of the swimming pool, surrounded by manicured greenery, with composite decking for lounging and dining located towards the rear of the outdoor area. The sun amplifies the external blues and greens against the muted shades of the cladded walls, making them electric in their vibrancy. Storage style: A key feature of the house, the sliding wall and storage unit act as a veil between the kitchen and living/dining areas, so that the space can be used differently when entertaining 049

Once inside, the entire space can immediately be spied through to the elongated window that looks out onto the rear garden. Inside its cooler and the light softer through sheer curtains. Here, the front room is partially split into two spaces by a solid, sliding unit made of carefully stained oak veneer, part of the home’s muted palette of greys and browns, the only flourish of colour to be found in the soft furnishings and paintings. ‘We wanted something to move alongside the main axis of the house, as if it were separating the two metaphorical aspects of the brain,’ says Matthew, explaining the thinking behind the sliding unit. ‘The sliding wall and storage unit gives the user control over the visibility and connection one has between the kitchen on one side and the dining/living area on the other. It’s a sort of veil between the two that can be used in different social conditions and company.’ The back half of the house comprises two bedrooms, one of which has a stowaway bed unit so the room can be utilised and enjoyed more freely. The basement has a flatlet of sorts, with a large bedroom and kitchenette, as well as containing a garage and various facility areas.

This use of the downstairs space enabled the architects to focus on achieving a timeless effect with their choice of layout and materials for the interiors on the ground floor - clean lines and a minimal but softened core, natural, good quality materials using different marbles, from statuarietto to grey stone to slate, and meticulously stained veneers and parquets. Sumptuous wood was used for the living/dining area, whilst matt gunmetal grey, quasi floor-to-ceiling perpendicular panels line the kitchen back wall, with a central island made of marble. A repetition of panelling means the eye is drawn to the select pieces, such as the egg-like reading chair in leather by BoConcept, and the striking Flos floor lamp designed by Philippe Starck. There’s a strong sense of connectivity within the space, created by the repetition of materials used. Matthew talks about how the concept of the brain as metaphor for the design of the house developed into contrasting hard and soft, warm and cold, focused and relaxed, to create a harmonious balance.

The homeowner is quick to point out just how different it is to live here, compared to their previous home. ‘It’s about simplicity, and the optimisation of function and form,’ she says. Decluttering and replacing their old furnishings with the move, their new living space offers generous storage, enabling them to live in a decluttered zone, with all the usual bits and bobs of daily life hidden away. The raised terrace at the front of the house commands a long-distance panorama all the way to Gozo. ‘On really clear days you can see Sicily from here,’ continues the homeowner. It’s easy to understand why minimising on space and clutter, and focusing on pure form and texture creates freedom, privacy and ultimately wellbeing. 054

good home office needs to be as calming as it is motivating, and as flexible as it is particular and packed with personality. It’s quite an ask so where to begin? ‘Great home offices are one of the biggest trends of the moment,’ says Matthew Borg, from the Studio Moda Group. ‘Life has become really fast paced, and people need to be able to balance their home and work lives more than ever. But a great home office starts with serious planning – so I suggest that you begin by thinking of the function the space will play. This will help you to create an office you want to spend time in, rather than have to force yourself to sit in.’ In fact, when it comes to a home office, every good design decision starts with function. Thus, it helps to kick-start planning your home office around what you need it to achieve. Is it a place for you to lock yourself away for writing time or strategising? Or would you rather it played a central role in your home, so you can keep an eye on the children while you catch up with admin? Can it be a little nook with just a computer and internet connection, or do you need a larger area for storing work-related materials. ‘Before you do anything else, make a list of the main tasks you’ll be doing most,’ advises Chris Pace, from Vivendo Group. ‘Emailing? Calling? Editing videos? Once you know what you will be doing in the office, then you’ll start to understand what it will need to look like. ‘People perform at their best when they are most comfortable,’ Chris continues. ‘But studies also show that you need to constantly move about, so having a swivel and reclining office chair will allow you to move about freely without leaving your desk. Productivity is the main aim here, so think about that at every stage.’ Technology is also a crucial aspect of having a great home office. What good would a working space be if it didn’t have enough plugs for your computer, screen and printer? Equally, how annoying would it be if those plugs were at the opposite end of the room to your desk? ‘In the past, we focused primarily on encouraging our clients to have a great desk and chair,’ says Rachel Cluett, from Satariano. ‘Nowadays, we know that devices and gadgets also have a vital role to play, while paper storage and filing cabinets have lost their primary importance. This is great, as the shift into a paperless office is also more environmentally-friendly. Think, instead, about other things, such as specialised lighting that encourages different work moods, sound absorption and acoustics, the colours that make you most productive, and the technology that you will need to have at your fingertips. Of course, it isn’t always possible to dedicate a whole room to your home office – in which case, you can select a spot that can multi-task within your living room, kitchen or bedroom. ‘The compact nature of new technological devices has led to a shift towards a more minimalist approach when it comes to home offices,’ says Paul Vassallo from FINO. ‘Desks today also look fantastic because designers know that they often have to be integrated into more public parts of the home; good desks now have channels that run down the sides to pass wires, suspended cable-brackets hidden below the work-surface, hooks and hangers
attached to the legs of the desk, and back-panels to hide any messy wiring.’ Paul explains that another common request in this sphere is to hide or segregate your home work space using a divider or walk-in wardrobe. ‘It can all be done,’ he says. ‘And we delight in finding the right solution for every person. There is so much to consider in getting this right – the furniture, décor, layout, and colour – that speaking to an expert will always be a great place to start. Listening to outside ideas can be an excellent way to discover unique approaches that might not have occurred to you otherwise.’ 059

A home office must be practical above all else, and you can then have fun thinking about the visuals later. GO NATURAL IF YOU CAN Natural light is always the best for working, so if you have the option of setting your home office up in a room with a large window, take it. A lovely view is a bonus too, of course! THINK STORAGE Stuff somehow accumulates in offices – bills, paper work, stationery, and knickknacks. If you don’t like the cluttered look, then think about where all of that can go when you don’t want it to be seen but can’t yet face sorting through it. Bookcases with stylish, closed-top storage boxes make a great combination. GET COMFY Your home office doesn’t have to be all work. One of the best things about working from home is that you can work the way you want to. This is where a comfy reading chair or sofa could come in, as well as a luxurious throw or pillow. MAKE IT PERSONAL Again, one of the benefits of your office being at home is that you don’t have to suit any status quo or match with corporate colours. Once you’re done with the planning practicalities, make the space your own by adding your favourite photos and paintings, as well as plants and other mood-boosting items. The result? Today a bedroom is often much more than a room to rest your head. Here’s how Carlo Schembri design team transformed a plain, white bedroom into a stylish place to sleep, relax - and work

T
he bedroom is traditionally a place to sleep but today it can also be a place finish off some work and/or a private lounge space. This multi-functional approach was taken by Carlo Schembri Design Team when they created this bedroom. ‘Multi-purpose spaces are becoming more popular,’ says the team’s architectural designer Ryan Calleja. ‘In the case of the bedroom, it is still very much a private space, a place for rest and sleep, but it can also be a mini-office where you might sit and sign some papers, or even an office where you work for much of the day. This means you have to combine comfort with furniture and accessories that allow for these other uses.’ This bedroom is predominantly a guest bedroom with one of the homeowner’s daughters, who is usually overseas, using it when she is at home. ‘Designing such an intimate space for a nondefined user is never an easy task, and therefore we decided to somehow reflect the peaceful atmosphere suggested by the villa itself within the design direction,’ says Ryan. This lent itself to a neutral colour scheme that keeps the
room feeling light and peaceful. ‘This is also important if you’re considering the bedroom as a working space as well, as a dark room can be difficult to work in for any length of time,’ says Ryan. A large room, the biggest challenge was to make it feel warm. The starting point for achieving this is a mural in a heavily textured wallpaper along one wall which added tactility as well as visual interest. ‘It was the first piece to be chosen for the room,’ says Ryan. ‘The mural is such a significant part of the room, that everything has to be compatible with it.’ Making the floor cosy underfoot is carpet which is found in other parts of the home. Adding an extra layer of texture as well as zoning the lounge area is a rug made from patchwork leather. A beautiful armchair creates a quiet place to read a book, and gives a large room a secondary focus. ‘Next to the balcony door is the perfect reading spot and the indoor plants help accentuate the indoor-outdoor connection more clearly,’ says Ryan. The opposite wall is taken up with a desk and storage, the stepped design of the furniture giving character to the white. With mirrors, it also doubles up as a dressing room.

The bedding market in Malta features two companies whose experience and expertise date back through the decades. Emma Mattei meets the current generation behind Form and Dorsal

urchasing a mattress today has come a long way since the 1940s. ‘Our original Dunlopillo shop was located on Rue d’Argens in Gzira, where latex mattresses would be piled high so there was no way of testing an item,’ says Philip Galea, Director of Form, where mattresses are definitely not piled up high today. Yet it was with latex rubber Dunlopillo mattresses, a British import, that Philip’s father, Joe M. Galea, entered the business. In fact, Dunlopillo Malta is the oldest same hands distributor in the world, going back to 1947. ‘It would have been earlier if it hadn’t been for WWII,’ continues Philip, ‘when rubber became a precious commodity for seats in tanks, trucks and motorcycles, and of course hospital beds.’ When the Dunlopillo latex mattress did finally arrive, it ushered in the new age of bedding, with an emphasis on comfort and hygiene. Until then, a typical mattress found in Malta was either coarse or fine vegetal material, depending on affordability, encased in a tufted cotton cover which required periodical washing and re-filling. Latex, however, a secretion from the rubber tree, has an open cellular structure that makes it sterile and non-allergenic, and thus beneficial to those who suffer from respiratory ailments.
Dunlopillo
Philip recalls how his father, with his latex mattresses, would attend the trade fair at San Anton in Attard, a national attraction that was a form of entertainment for people from all walks of life. ‘I have pictures of my father there with the British Governor and Archbishop Gonzi, as well as with the man in the street, and I remember being in my father’s shop, with customers travelling all the way from Cottonera and Mellieha to purchase a mattress, as well as the British officers who were familiar with Dunlop as a well-known brand,’ he says.
‘The bedding industry has come full circle’ Today, the Galea family business is in its third generation, with Philip’s son Julian managing the mattress division as part of a larger offering under the flagship company Form. It continues to provide reliable, highquality latex mattresses, whilst diversifying and growing with the times. ‘Interestingly, the bedding industry has come full circle, with luxury mattresses being made with a variety of natural fibres, such

as cashmere, merino wool and horsehair, particularly in high-end beds such as those from Dunlopillo Spain, and Hästens,’ says Philip. Within Dunlopillo Spain mattresses, cotton, linen, merino wool, camel wool, silk and linen layers each perform a function, including moisture absorption so necessary in Malta, as well as anti-static and cooling properties that are essential to provide good sleep. Recently introduced, Hästens is an iconic name in bedding and arguably the world’s best mattress brand. Handmade in Sweden using the finest materials, the range comprises a collection of frame beds with overlying toppers, the traditional Scandinavian sleep system, as well as the more popular bed system of bed, mattress and topper, with different spring systems overlain by multilayers of natural fillings, mainly horsehair for which Hästens is best known. Some 72 years on, Form continue to be unbeaten in their knowhow and experience of the local and international market. Their continuing presence is proof enough of the loyalty they enjoy from residents but as well, in that time, there have been no recorded requests of customers asking to return their mattress. 085

lberto Moretti, a third-generation member of the family behind the creation of the market-leading Italian bedding company, Dorsal, is talking about the benefits of a good night’s sleep. ‘It decreases blood pressure, regenerates broken synapses, improves our moods and reduces stress, therefore making us live longer,’ he says. In Malta, Dorsal products are sold by Wellbeing Bedding, a company that is also owned by Alberto. ‘It began with my grandfather in 1932, he used to repair mattresses and weld metal frames for a living,’ says Alberto, ‘but the turning point came in 1963 when a local convent asked him to produce a series of beds, which galvanised the setting up of a production system.’ From the city of Conegliano, just north of Venice, where Alberto’s grandfather had a small lab, he moved a short distance to Corbanese and today it is the site of three production units, employing 40 people, selling to 600 companies in Italy and covering 25 export countries. Dorsal was the first company (Industria Reti Moretti) to introduce slats to the Italian

Key to running a company over many decades is, says Alberto, the ability to adapt quickly to changes in culture and technology. Dorsal began exporting bedding systems in the early 1980s, and has had to survive a number of challenges along the way. A weak lira helped make its prices competitive; the introduction of the euro, coupled with the ensuing growth in the market, however, saw this price competitiveness decline, and with the advent of the internet, competition has become ever more fierce.

‘Sleep culture varies from country to country as well as the budget that a family allots to bedding products,’ says Alberto. ‘Northern countries in Europe, and Asia in general, tend to spend more than southern countries and America and you can also notice differences in the length of time people keep their mattresses before changing to a new, more hygienic one - ten years versus 15 to 20 years. Internet and cheaper prices have also decreased the value that one gives to this product.’ Alberto’s currently excited about the hybrid mattresses that combine more than one technology (spring and memory, latex and spring), as well as the use of renewable resources and recyclable materials. Also interesting are new technologies that can help take you to sleep or gently wake you up in the morning with vibrations or elevation. ‘Many of us wear smart watches that detect how we sleep, and record our heartbeats and breathing rhythms; soon this data will be used to understand what happens when we sleep and whether we can use this time to be productive,’ says Alberto, ‘this will lead to products that can improve how we wake up and how well we perform during the day.’

When it’s cold outside, there is nothing better than sliding into a luxuriously made bed that envelops you in a snug cocoon. But how do you get that boutique hotel-style look at home? The answer is layering. Here’s how... 1.
Start with a mattress protector that will protect your bed and also you against allergens.
2.
Next comes a mattress topper for an extra layer of padding for additional comfort and support. For a really fluffed up bed, go for a topper that is about 10cm thick.
3.
A fitted sheet, with its elasticated corners, tightly covers the mattress and is the first layer of bedlinen. This can be in a different but co-ordinating colour to the rest of the bedlinen.
4.
A flat sheet is considered optional but it adds another layer and also reduces how often you need to clean your duvet cover.
5.
The duvet is the layer that gives you warmth and in a patterned cover, also gives you the the main decorative element.
6.
Finish the body of the bed with a throw or lightweight bedspread in a colour that works with the duvet, either picking out a shade found within it or going for a contrast (especially if you have plain bedlinen). Fold it lengthways and place it horizontally across the bed, towards the bottom.
7.
How many cushions you go for is personal taste, but at least two per side of the bed, one in your main pattern, the other in the shade of your sheets. If you’re adding cushions, choose ones different in style but that co-ordinate with the bedlinen.

Architectural practice Archi+ recently won the Emerging Practice Special Commendation award at the Premju Emanuele Luigi Galizia awards judged by Maltese association of architects, Kamra tal-Periti. This is the second time the practice has been recognised at these awards and a project that has garnered great praise is their design of the restaurant NONI. Housed in what was once the premises of Xmun Borg’s Bakery and Confectionery, Archi+ respected the site’s history when layering in a modern restaurant, giving an industrial aesthetic a softer feel with details such as pastel tiles that hark to the site’s sweet history. One highlight is the dining room entrance where arching timber sections disguise an awkward passageway beneath the original masonry staircase. With the bakery’s original facade and sign restored, inside a 3D effect of the original sign has been turned into a mural, the words NONI spelled vertically. Award-winning indeed. www.noni.com.mt 099

ROASTED PORK BELLY AND SMOKED SAUSAGE
with white bean cassoulet Serves 4
A traditional hearty dish, pared back to create a modern main
INGREDIENTS
½ pork belly 4 smoked pork sausages 200g white beans 2 onions, thinly sliced 2 cloves of garlic, chopped 1L chicken stock 10g smoked paprika 50g flour 50g butter Seasoning METHOD Preheat the oven to 140 degrees Celsius. Score the skin of the pork and season with salt. Place in a roasting tin and roast for 3 hours. Boil the beans for 1 hour in water. Fry the onions and garlic in butter and when cooked, add the flour and paprika. Cook for a minute and then slowly add the cold chicken stock, stirring constantly. Drain the cooked beans and add to the mix. Place in a braising tray with a lid and roast for 2 hours, alongside the pork. When the pork is almost cooked, fry the sausages. When ready, thickly slice the pork and place a slice on a plate along with a sausage and a couple of spoonfuls of beans. Serve the remainder of the beans separately if preferred. Here, the beans are pictured with onion rings that have been dusted in flour and then deep fried until crispy. 101

FIG CLAFOUTIS with vanilla ice cream Serves 8

INGREDIENTS
500g fresh figs 4 eggs 160g plain flour 160g melted butter
(and a bit extra for lining the tray)
300ml milk 1 vanilla pod or vanilla extract 120g caster sugar Brown sugar (optional) Vanilla ice-cream to serve 102
METHOD
Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Rub the inside of a 30cm flan tin with butter. Cut the figs and place randomly in the tin. Mix all the remaining ingredients in a separate mixing bowl to create a batter and pour this into the tin; it will almost cover the fruit. Bake for 25 minutes. When cool, dust with icing sugar and serve with vanilla ice-cream. Serving suggestion (as pictured) - sprinkle brown sugar over the surface and brulĂŠe it for a hint of extra sweetness and crunch.

PUMPKIN RISOTTO
with sage leaves and parmesan crisps Serves 2 as a starter
INGREDIENTS 150g pumpkin 2tbsp olive oil 1 shallot finely chopped 1 garlic clove finely chopped 100g arborio rice
50ml white wine 200ml chicken stock 130g Parmesan grated 50g butter A handful of sage leaves A little flour
METHOD Cut the pumpkin into small cubes and place in a saucepan and add enough water to cover the pumpkin. Boil until soft, then puree. Next, heat the olive oil over a medium heat and when hot, fry the shallots and garlic until the shallots are translucent. Add the rice and stir, then pour in the white wine. Once the wine has evaporated, add the stock little by little, stirring continuously - do not let the rice stick to the bottom - until all the stock has been absorbed and the rice is cooked (it still should have a slight ‘bite’). Add the pumpkin puree to the rice and stir. Remove from heat and add 30g of the Parmesan and all the butter. Season to taste and serve immediately. For the Parmesan crisps grate 100g of Parmesan and place on a baking sheet on a tray and roast in an oven at 180 degrees Celsius for 10 minutes. For the sage crisps dust the sage in flour and deep fry until crispy.

However, if a red it must be, roasted pork belly, especially if it’s Maltese meat, begs for an equally super-tasty glass of Malta’s iconic Merlot. The dish is quite fatty but this red has got the delicious edge that’s required to cut through that. This bold Merlot of Malta is oak-aged and dark, earthy and savoury to match the smokiness of the sausage. What a great autumnal bottle! 103

RESTAURANT > CIRCOLO POPOLARE Where to start with what is one of the city’s most Instagrammed restaurants? The wisteria (it’s real) and fairylight draped ceiling, the awesome collection of vintage plates and framed pictures, the 20,000 colourful vintage bottles on back-lit shelves, the Med-inspired textiles or the 200m of coloured Italian glass. Designed by French design team Studio Kiki, the look is Sicilian wedding and then some. Food is casual - starters to share and pizzas. The bazaar on the ground floor resembles something from Around the World in 80 Days, with cartons, boxes and tins stacked from floor to ceiling, peddling every kind of tea like a sophisticated souk. The first floor dining room is a calming affair after the chaos: all white interiors, staff also in white, sophistication on tap. All the bistro dishes have a tea surprise such as salmon with matcha. RESTAURANT > MOMO Mourad Mazouz's Magrebhian masterpiece was totally redesigned in spring 2019 and is now fresh-faced. Mazouz also owns Sketch and some of the frivolity you can find there is also present in the new Momo interiors – which are enough to make you feel like you're in Oran or Fez. The Arabic voices dining around you are proof enough that the food here is the real deal – the roasted cauliflower and the asparagus tagine are exemplary dishes. Downstairs, behind a front door you have to knock on to get in is a speakeasy, El Bar, from Eric Lorincz – who ran the world-famous American Bar at the Savoy previously. With little fanfare, it – and the Mandrake Hotel it's attached to – manage to perform all sorts of trompe l'oeil tricks on you – hidden passageways and dark, sultry corners, smoke and mirrors. The design is a family affair – overseen by entrepreneur Rami Fustok and his interior designer sister Tala, and with artworks by brother Malec and sculptor father Bushra. It feels wild, decadent and exotic.
