EDITOR’S LETTER
HW
This Issue. With just a few weeks to go, it’s definitely starting to feel Christmassy and I hope this issue helps get you into the spirit of this merriest of seasons. There are 52 pages devoted to all things festive - beautiful decorations with which to style up your home along with ideas for creating a stunning statement table. Foliage, whether real or faux, continues to be a huge trend and we’ve combined it with crisp white and a touch of metallics for a lovely snowy look. Plus there are easy DIY ideas for adding that final decorative flourish. Our three homes also fit the Christmas theme - not just subtly decorated but also with uplifting stories about creating a wonderful home, whether it is adding character to a new build or restoring an old house to modernity whilst keeping its sense of history and the stories that have been lived between its walls. Christmas - and New Year - means entertaining and cocktails will always get things going with a bang. We’ve got some delicious ones for you, and our experts have teamed each drink with a great-looking - but easy to make - canapé. And if you’re struggling for present ideas, take a look at our Christmas Gift Guide. Finally, on behalf of everyone at HOMEWORKS I thank you for your support over the past year and wish you all a wonderful Christmas and a very happy and successful 2019.

ROMINA BALDACCHINO IS THE WINNER OF THE HOMEWORKS BOOK - A COLLECTION OF CONTEMPORARY MALTESE INTERIORS AND ARCHITECTURE, WITH OVER 300 PAGES OF VIBRANT AND STUNNING PHOTOGRAPHY, WORTH €40 ROMINA WROTE: For me, it is always a good day when I visit the local stationery and an issue of HOMEWORKS awaits! I usually read it all, starting off from the editorial and going through all the articles and devouring every advertisement. It would indeed be bliss to have all the finances in the world and to be able to try out all the various styles found in the featured homes. Unfortunately, reality is somehow different and I am content to look and copy the finer details such as how a shelving unit is styled, the decorations on a table and the plants adorning a corner. Wouldn’t it be great to have a feature which explains such details to people like me whose homes are already their treasures and are simple looking for something extra! Perhaps a floral decoration for my tabletop, an easy abstract painting that even I could make or some tips on making a terrarium would improve my beloved home :)

FAUX FLOWER POWER The idea of bird and bee-friendly plants has been taken one step further by Dutch designer Matilde Boelhouwer. She has created a set of five artificial flowers that turn rain into sugar water, creating food sources for insect pollinators living in cities where flowers can be in short supply. Launched at last month’s Dutch Design Week, the five flowers are each made from laser-cut screen-printed polyester petals, with a small container attached at the centre, which is connected to a hollow stem. This container collects and contains rainwater which is then transported down the stem to a tank containing sugar, where the two mix together. The solution is then pumped back up into the small container where the insects can access it. In designing the flowers, Matilde Boelhouwer found three flower shapes most favoured by the five insects – Asteraceae, or the daisy family, which is liked by bees and hoverflies, Fabaceae, or the pea family, which attracts moths and butterflies, and Lamiaceae, or mint, a favourite of bumblebees.
She then worked with entomologists to give each flower qualities that would attract the insect species - the containers have been adjusted to the length of the tongue of each species, while the petals are patterned and coloured in the shapes and hues that the insects find most attractive. She was inspired to make the flowers after reading about the fall in the world’s insect population. ‘For me, the relationship between flowers and insects is one of the most fascinating connections found in nature,’ said Matilde. ‘Flowers evolved to serve insects, and insects evolved to serve flowers simultaneously. ‘Nowadays, however, with all of us living in urban jungles made of concrete and stone, the presence of flowers has become something less natural. This lack of flowering has resulted in a drastic insect population decline.’ She hopes to help to reverse this by working with architects, civil engineers and city developers to introduce her flora in to spaces where flowers usually cannot grow.

TOP TABLE Gordon Guillaumier’s Lake table for Desalto has won in the Furniture category of the annual Archiproducts Design Awards 2018. The awards, which cover all aspects of design and aim to reward experimental research and innovation with an emphasis on the emotional and functional power of a project, are in their third year and 600 products were judged by an international jury of designers that included Paola Navone and India Mahdavi.
The oval-shaped Lake table by the Maltese designer now based in Milan is made of a ceramic top with tubular steel legs. It was judged to have a ‘disarming design thanks to its unconventional simplicity for contemporary everyday life. At first glance, it looks like the still surface of an artificial lake: an asphalt colour mirror, placed into domestic or public settings’.
KETTLE CHIC
Alessi is responsible for some of the design world’s most iconic kettles, and it has new one to add to its collection. The Plissé, designed by Michele de Lucchi, is defined by its folds which have been created by the process of pleating. ‘Atlantic’ dining table
‘Species’ chaise lounge
How did your collaboration begin? Patrik: We met at the bar at Central St Martins [the art and design college in London]. I was doing design and Ian was doing ceramics. Most of our ideas happened around the café. At the ti e atrik worked in an architect’s o fice. t a certain oint we ust realised that we shared the same ‘language’. Ian: There’s an organic process that was developed when we started working together; we share the same ethos related to sustainability and dedication for instance. Our design education brought us together. Our practice was set up to challenge the notions of modernism. What inspires you? Ian: here’s a ourne where we instincti el know it can co e from words. Our ideas come from conversations. In Patrik’s case, it’s natural for him to sketch, and for me to make. e find ins iration in ‘nature’. ut not in the wa eo le think of nature. It could be in other artistic practices, such as contemporary dance, fashion, it could be design, or simply in conversation. We travel, we watch many ballets, visit galleries, powerful performances, we search for the core. Then we gradually formulate things together, something that slowly coagulates. How do you work? Ian: Some of the strongest partnerships in design and art were ‘cou les’ the kind o a finit that si lings o ten ha e. e’re supportive of one another, yet simultaneously critical, especially a out the rocess. e a roduce ewer ite s and o ects ut more quality pieces. Patrik: In act I o ten ste ack ro a ro ect. e re use to ut oursel es in a o and define oursel es as architects or designers. We’ve been obsessed with the notions of functionality, as well as working with something historical and then doing something else with it.
‘Antarctica’ gueridon
Our work involves a lot of experimentation. The editing process is very hard; what’s really important is going into the studio and ‘doing’. Ian: The things that we do are often impossible to draw or re licate the ust ha e to e ade. here’s an energ in creating and aking use o that ower rocess. aking an o ect eel e ortless is erha s the ost di ficult to achie e. Patrik: Ours is also a quest for intense energy and e ressi eness. e o ten take o ects and digitise the we blow them up in size to change the perception of a piece. A small maquette, blown up in scale almost takes on the semblance of architecture. Which are your hero pieces? The 2007 Pyrenees Sofa, where, rather than using foam, we carved out of it. Over the years, we’ve gone back to it, taking it to crazy heights, almost making it unusable; it’s interesting when viewed as a sculpture. You can’t think of it as a sofa, but rather as an artistic o ect. It’s an in ented ins iration taken ro so as where history repeats itself, but it’s what’s inside that’s forming it. e’re o ing urther and urther awa ro ‘re eating’ o ects. Then, we’d have to mention the Species sofa, the Atlantic Dining Table, and the Antarctica pieces. There’s a linearity in our work, where one body of work breathes into the next. The ones we have highlighted are the main pieces within the bodies of work, and they form the basis of our work. Have you been to Malta before? Ian: We’ve been to Malta on several occasions. Malta is becoming so much bigger, and more important. It’s such an unusual place, unlike anywhere else. And contemporary art works really well against this backdrop, in this context. Patrik: I feel at home here. It’s incredibly dramatic and hardly a beach resort. And architecture should be equally dramatic, it should follow / complement the context. 019

IN GOOD TASTE...
Can the plate we eat our food from affect how the food tastes? According to research carried out by Professor Charles Spence it can. ‘Our brain plays tricks on us about what our taste buds are tasting,’ he explains. ‘There have been experiments showing that eating popcorn from a blue bowl tastes saltier than from a white bowl. Similarly, when it comes to shape, an asymmetric, angular plate can bring out the sourness and acidity of food much more than a round plate does.’ Intrigued by this research, designer Reiko Kaneko has created a set of crockery for appliance manufacturer Neff which explores how the colour, shape, texture and weight of crockery impact perce tions o fla our. he li ited edition set includes a starter late a main dish bowl and a desert bowl designed to heighten the taste of each stage of a meal. he fine one china starter dish eatures white and lue gla ing

The main dish bowl, made from black stoneware, has a rough, sandpaper-like texture that is designed to enhance the sensation of spiciness. The raspberry shape and texture of the dessert bowl aim to ring out the ruit fla our o sweet dishes while the ink shade increases the sense of sweetness. ‘Ever since I discovered Professor Charles Spence’s work, I’ve been fascinated with the different dimensions that impact taste,’ says Reiko Kaneko. ‘Playing with colour, shape and texture with the goal o ulti atel influencing how diners will taste ood has o ened u a lot o creati e a enues which are reflected in designs.’ Neff.com

The British designer who has lit up the world of lighting, but is also designing a wide range of exciting products from armchairs to washing up liquid
B
ritain’s Tom Dixon is today one of the world’s most sought after designers, with an international client list and a formidable portfolio of products from the iconic S chair, in the permanent collection of the MoMA, New York and V&A, London, to modern classics such as the Copper Pendant and Mirror Ball lights, as well as glamorous interiors such as the Mondrian Hotel. All of which is rather amazing when you consider that he is completely self-taught and came to design via a totally unorthodox route. Tom, now 59, was born in Tunisia and moved to Britain when he was four years old. He found school and then Chelsea Art chool un ulfilling ut oth did allow hi to work with ceramics and experience the satisfaction of turning a raw material into something useful. He left Chelsea School of Art after a motorcycle accident, and what followed was a peripatetic few years with stints as a printer, typesetter, a colourist for cartoon fil s and then as the ass guitarist or a pop-funk band that signed a record deal and toured with The Clash and Simple Minds. This, however, came to a dramatic
Black Soap
www.tomdixon.net end when a second motorcycle crash left him with a broken arm and rendering him no longer able to play his instrument. It was when a friend, who owned a carrepair shop showed him how to weld, that Tom’s career as a designer began. ‘With welding, you make very solid structures very quickly and the attraction of that technique, and the speed in which I made things, was what turned me into a designer,’ he says. ‘So everything I do has come from industrial technique. ‘People that have inspired me are engineers and sculptors. From Noguchi and Hepworth all the way to Amish Kapoor. And the more maverick engineers like Eiffel you can see the Pylon chair has taken direct influence ro hi ’. In the 1980s, Tom caught the eye of Giulio Cappellini, then head of the eponymous Italian company known for its exciting approach to design, and it was at Cappellini that Tom designed the sculptural S chair and was hailed for his design ingenuity. ‘I have often been asked what the inspiration was behind the S-Chair and, honestly, the only memory I have is of drawing a small doodle of a chicken […] and thinking that I could make a chair
Pylon Chair
from it,’ he says. ‘The secret of its success, I believe, was creating an unexpected and unconventional shape in an archetypical comforting material.’ In 1998 Tom became Head of Design at UK Habitat which then had 70 shops, before becoming its Creative Director. ‘I learned a lot,’ he says. ‘You get really fast feedback about what’s worked and what’s not’. He’s taken this experience to his own company which was set up in 2002 and it continues to flourish and has garnered a reputation for superb lighting. ‘It’s partly the fact that I can use the latest technology and partly that I can be more radical,’ says Tom. ‘A lot of people feel unknowledgeable about lighting and maybe I help to simplify it. I think customers who are slightly conservative are more forgiving of innovation or crazy shapes than they would be with furniture.’ But it’s not just the glamorous end of the market that attracts his attention - he has also turned the design spotlight onto more mundane items such as a clear washing up liquid and a jet black hand soap. ‘“Extraordinary objects for everyday use” is my mantra,’ he says. And it is proving a successful one.

TREE DECORATION This alternative Christmas tree is made from branches and twigs. To make it yourself, collect pieces of wood in various sizes but keep the width of the branches as uniform as possible. Lay them on the floor in a Christmas tree formation and then carefully join them together using thin wire (florist’s or jeweller’s wire is ideal). Once the twigs are secured in a recognisable shape, hang traditional baubles interspersed with small posies of greenery and sprigs of herbs such as rosemary and thyme, tied together with raffia and string. Add extra interest by lightly spraying some of the posies with white and gold paint. You can also add shells, seed pods (left as is or spray painted) and other natural ephemera. Wind thin strings of button cell batteryoperated fairy lights around the twigs. Hang on a wall, indoors or out, and as a final flourish place a paper pompom or other adornment on top to reference an ornamental tree topper

Our brief to the architect was to ake the house ore ergono ic to gi e it flow and not ha e to go out in the rain to reach the bedroom!’ he uilding which the ho eowners elie e housed the first aker in the illage was dark hu id and in a dila idated state with a bathroom built in the central courtyard. ‘When we saw it, the property was a complete disaster but we could see that it had so much potential with many beautiful features such as the arabesque lines of the courtyard, and the original birthing room with its two arches and the niche in the 037

wall for the statue of a saint,’ says the homeowner. ‘While we wanted the house to be modern, and whiter and brighter, we were clear that we wanted to keep the traditional elements.’ The task of transforming the rundown building was given to Forward Architects. ‘A lot of thought went into each detail,’ says architect Daine Pranaityte Micallef. ‘We were limited in what we could do because of regulations but we were still able to create an internal spiral inside, making it possible to use all the areas without going outside. We also added a master bedroom at the back of the property, a cosy living space overlooking the central courtyard, and a roof study. We also eliminated odd structures in the courtyard, and reinstated its original shape. All this was done in a subtle way, so the new additions would complement and blend in.’ The old rubble walls at ground level were treated for humidity and plastered and then painted white. ‘We wanted a clean look, however we left some stone details exposed, for example the stone arch in the kitchen, to highlight the nice texture of the original walls,’ says Daine. 038

Above, kitchen: off the dining area, the kitchen is a clean, white space with cabinets that have been kept low-level. ‘As the room is quite narrow and long, we decided to have only low units on both sides,’ says Daine. ‘Tall units housing ovens, a fridge, more storage and a coffee/tea counter are located at the end corridor space which works as the extension to the kitchen. The corridor space is a connection between the TV room and small back courtyard.’ Right, home-made Christmas touches: Dried orange slices and candles wrapped with evergreen sprigs and coloured string are simple to do but make pretty Christmas decorations

Also retained were the many little niches throughout the house which ensure its history and identity are evident. In the kitchen, however, the architects installed a double lining - creating a false wall within the room, leaving a space in between the two walls for the air to circulate. ‘The state of the walls was very bad – they were uneven and with soil in between so plastering them would have used a lot of plaster and it would have been too thick. A double lining gave us the perfect wall,’ says Daine. The spiral stairs that connects the downstairs living space to the level above is a head-turner, snaking its way between the floors. ‘It’s a take on the garigor staircase but instead is constructed of steel in a raw lacquered finish with a gypsum plaster railing,’ says Daine. Upstairs, the architects created two new rooms, one a stylish but comfortable living room, the other a master bedroom and bathroom.

f walls could talk, this house in the village of Safi would have many stories to tell. There would be those that date from 1690, the date carved into one of its walls, perhaps about the Knights of St John and the plague that swept the country but somehow left this village unmarked. And then there are the more recent ones, created by Yael Shohat’s mother, Claire, Countess Henckel von Donnersmarck, who bought this house in 1975 while working in Malta. Claire fell in love with the country and decided to buy a getaway house here. In this house, she entertained extensively; the former Prime Minister Dom Mintoff and his wife were frequent guests at her many parties. ‘My
mother had a very busy life abroad living in Berlin, Washington, Bonn and Australia, so this was her bolt hole away from that life’, says Yael who lives in Sydney. Yael spent many summer holidays in the Safi house as a child, and inherited it on her mother’s death. ‘I am sure there is a lot of love, passion, history and stories in this old house,’ she says. ‘By the time it was mine, though, it had a decaying grandeur.’ She wasn’t too sure what to do with it to begin with, however a solution was reached over a drink with an old friend who often spent time in Europe. ‘He visited the house and loved it, and so suggested that I renovate it and then decide, so with his help that’s what I did,’ she says.

It’s no surprise that Yael’s friend fell for the house. It has a wonderfully welcoming feel, a wow factor that’s not about being plush but about how good it feels to be in it. ‘The house seems to hug and hold you,’ says Yael. ‘It makes you feel safe and nurtured.’ Which is just as well because the renovation of the building was long, hard, and on occasion dangerous - when installing a new bathroom in a room above the entrance hall, the ceiling caved in, almost taking one of the workmen with it. ‘We took the house back to its bare bones in order to give it another 350 years,’ says Yael. Explains Edwin Mintoff of Edwin Mintoff Architects who were taken on to modernise the property: ‘Our design centred around respecting the intrinsic historical value of the building, and respecting the Maltese townhouse morphology. We tried to keep the structural alterations to a minimum to respect the original building fabric and our interior design was based on cultivating a Mediterranean feeling of vernacular style. ‘Most of the furniture was custom-made and designed to fit into the spectacular existing building, and in order to provide adequate storage we came up with innovative solutions, for example the staircase was custom made to provide storage’. As well as rebuilding areas that were unsafe, the property was entirely re-wired and re-plumbed and the ground floor treated for humidity, which was extensive. The wall between the kitchen and dining room was pulled down to create one spacious room, and above this, the first floor was extended to create another bedroom and bathroom, these accessed via a bespoke, timber staircase. As well windows were added to improve the flow of light. The heavy work done, the walls were plastered and painted, Yael opting for white instead of the original stone. ‘I wanted clean and clear lines which, are a big and beautiful feature of the house which highlight the vaulted ceiling and arches in addition to the other architectural details’ says Yael.

Similarly, furniture has been kept to a minimum. ‘I want people to discuss the architectural features of the rooms rather than the fabric of the sofa,’ says Yael. As much as she has invested in the property, though, it is a long way from Malta to Sydney and so Yael has decided to sell the house. It now awaits a new owner to write its next chapter.

he saying ‘money can’t buy you happiness’ surely applies to this homeowner. Her last home, an enormous apartment, was in a luxury development where one walked in and was instantly wowed by the high-end luxe that oozed sleek sophistication. ‘But it never felt like home,’ she says. The beginning of this year saw a ‘360 degree change’ in her life. She moved out of the luxury apartment and bought this two-floor duplex maisonette which she has spent the last few months decorating. It is a world away from her last space with bold wall treatments and distinctive furniture. ‘But this is a home that reflects me,’ she says. ‘It has the “Ah factor” rather than the “Wow factor”, and that is what I was after.’

She bought the apartment brand new, and liked it for its abundance of light and the countryside views from the roof terrace. ‘But it’s less than half the size of what I used to live in so I needed to be careful how I used colour so it didn’t look small,’ she says. To give herself more space, she closed off the balcony that leads from the living room, effectively extending the living room and creating an area that’s now a beautifully bright place to relax, with a view of the sky above. ‘As I have the roof terrace, I knew I wouldn’t miss the balcony and it has made a real difference to the interior,’ she says. The stand-out feature of the apartment, however, is the mural that spans one wall. ‘I saw it in a magazine and it just fascinated me and I had to have it,’ she says. ‘Because of it I had to change the colour scheme I had planned and the furniture I had ordered.’ But it was worth it, the large-scale pattern of tropical plants and flowers giving the apartment real personality and warmth. The greenery is picked up throughout the space with indoor plants for a verdant feel throughout.

‘To complement it, I have kept the rest of the decor with an earthy feel,’ says the homeowner. ‘The carpets are a natural fibre and the coffee table, my favourite furniture piece, is made from the stump of a tree.’ It all comes together to create a wonderfully comfortable home, that’s especially cosy at Christmas. ‘This place reminds me of the home I grew up in,’ says the homeowner. ‘I really enjoy living here - unlike where I last lived, I use every space, and I always look forward to coming home.’
