EDITOR’S LETTER HW

Each year the Architecture & Design issue of HOMEWORKS rolls around, it’s fascinating to reflect on just how quickly the context of clever architecture changes. Maximising space intelligently has always been an architect’s true accolade, but with the price of square metreage increasing by the day, the space, light and air ventilation challenges are heightening in turn. This issue celebrates architects who have mastered these three imperative elements through extremely well thought-out design and creative flexibility. This edition also explores the offices and studios designed by some of Malta’s top architects and designers for their own firms. The result is an exposé of form and function at its finest. Stylist Jennifer Jo Barth brings us yet another striking inspired set, showing off outdoor fabrics in gorgeous hues, patterns and materials on page 054. Newcomer Justine Bartolo finds the New Nautical trend in shops now on page 090. CVC Architecture renovates a Balzan garden into a welcoming space, inclusive of a pool and entertainment areas on page 070. Not to be missed is the delectable cuisine section of the magazine, whereby Executive Chef Kevin Bonello and Sous Chef Clint Grech at De Mondion, The Xara Palace Relais & Châteaux bring us some seafood dishes to get seriously excited about (page 076). Enjoy!

ECO-SUSTAINABILITY

Skandium will be celebrating their 15-year anniversary and exhibiting 15 products of their own production. The Scandi company’s newest edition features designs by Daniel Schofield, which include a clothes rack, coffee table, sofa and shelving system, all made with fine quality materials and which reflect a timeless and classic design based on simplicity and functionality.

Award-winning Designer Patricia Urquiola seems to be on a sustainability mission as her new releases are generating a lot of publicity due to their recyclable qualities. The revamped Husk Chair 2015, which is a top product in B&B Italia’s new collection for 2015, is made from components which can be easily disassembled, aiding in both the recycling process, as well as reducing environmental impact.

Meanwhile, The Conran Shop will be displaying top modern and classic pieces by iconic designers and contemporary innovators. One of the main pieces on show will be the 1085 Chair by Bartoli Design, which stands the test of time through a natural progression of change in texture, colour and shape of the natural hide material it’s made from. Timeless in design and function, it’s a piece not to be missed.

Meanwhile, Urquiola’s Salinas Kitchen for Boffi is made up of carefully chosen eco-sustainable materials, and is framed throughout with a metal structure and modular units, which when combined, create a unified composition.

TRADITIONAL INFLUENCE MINT’S “Traditional Twist in a Modern World” will be a cultural journey unifying traditional craftsmanship, with raw materials and organic shapes. This collection reflects the perfect harmony of how different elements of different eras are being used by contemporary designers. Another Country will be launching Series Three - a collection inspired by Edwardian workshop furniture. Enabling their expertise in contemporary craftsmanship, Series Three is all about Beech-made furniture using traditional form with a contemporary signature stamp. Beech is an underused and abundant timber, and Another Country are reaching for its high use in the design scene creating beautiful, simple pieces reminiscent of an unpretentious period.

COLOUR Squint’s latest pride and joy will be the works of leading Korean artist Myung Nam An, who’s product range “Pink and Golden Eye” will be showcased throughout design week. Myung’s eccentric and colourful style is a true reflection of Squint’s brand image, with a contemporary twist. As usual, Established & Sons will be showcasing impressive installations of their superb collections. Duo designers ‘Raw Edges’ will be making a presence with a fun, playful installation, aimed at experimenting with different textures, colours and materials, which will result in unique versions of their forwardthinking chest of drawers design, “Stack Up”.

enowned inside and outside the architectural industry for his firm, clean lines and volumes to create architecture that intelligently maximises light, space and flexibility, it was extremely interesting to see what living space Architects Simon Grech and Elisa Camilleri would create for themselves.

R

Initially, this corner Valletta property comprised of two separate properties that were connected through a steel staircase. The architects wanted to create a flexible space that accommodates different tasks or functions. They did this by creating a moveable wall that allows the apartment to become completely three-dimensional. With this moving wall made of gypsum and steel, the apartment can become one whole open space when entertaining, or closed up to form a bedroom. It also serves to become a projection wall when the couple want to relax and watch a film in the evenings. The steel beams that replace the former walls form a steel cornice, which creates a play of angles, keeping the architectural intervention visible and defined. Prominent in the living area is a large plywood modular wall, which cases a comfortably sized murphy bed, along with ample storage space. Here, blocks from the wall can completely disconnect and be flipped around to serve as side tables or stools. The kitchen is also flexible so that it can open up to a fullyfledged and functional work space, as well as completely closed, forming a black box. The striking custom-made (by Simon & Elisa) island is based on the fundamental steel details 022

Simon: ‘The apartment is fun and works like a game or puzzle. Bringing in the element of jocularity and creating a space that can double up as an entertainment area was important to us.’ One of the space’s fortes is its airy and openness, with louvered windows that can be opened wide to bring in light and create natural ventilation, or closed when privacy is needed. The material palette was kept restricted, accented by blocks of colour introduced through furniture. 025

The sharp, geometric patterned floor tiles were chosen for their threedimensional effect, the angles of which echo throughout the house

Steel is a key material used throughout the apartment, forming the staircase, sliding wall, kitchen island and vanity. Meanwhile, cement/concrete is used to create the two main floor types that define different spaces and uses. Basic monolithic concrete floors are used in the open plan areas, while cement-patterned tiles define the ancillary spaces, such as the hallways and bathrooms. 4 Elisa: ‘The sharp, geometric floor tiles were chosen for their three-dimensional effect, the angles of which echo throughout the house - from the sharp steel railing to the concrete cantilevered edge.’

Artistic figures from Vee Gee Bee, San Gwann 026

Through this intelligent design, the maximum use of storage space was made possible, while the apartment adapts and transforms to suit the occasion. It’s clever, functional, and looks fantastic. GRECH&VINCIARCHITECTURE&DESIGN do it again.

The first room was full of character and was built using wooden beams and stone slabs, and this is what the architect wanted to keep. W

hen Architect Steve Scicluna first embarked on this project, this house consisted of a one level residential unit with severe problems within layout, light and ventilation. Upon entrance, there was originally a double bedroom in a room without natural light or ventilation. This room led to another through a narrow door which was used as a second bedroom (single bed). This space was used as a living space during the day and had a small table with two chairs which was used as a “dining space”. The ventilation for this room was through a narrow mostly solid door leading to an internal yard. The kitchen was situated beside the internal yard in a corridor which led to the bathroom. The homeowners are two siblings, male and female, both busy doctors with different shifts. They desperately required their own private spaces, while the living areas were also very important to them as they enjoy having friends over to mingle or for dinner; something that the original space could not fulfil in any way. Having neighbouring properties infiltrating the property from the side at both ground floor and first floor levels left it without any windows to the outside. Architect Steve Scicluna: ‘The first room was full of character and was built using wooden beams and stone slabs, and that is what I wanted to keep. The other rooms were relatively recent and were built in a very crude manner, completely lacking architectural value. I kept the character of the first room as much as possible, opened up the thick masonry wall dividing this room to the rest of the property, and demolished all the other rooms.’

SPACES HW The staircase begins as a continuous folded steel plate with wooden slabs on the goings and changes. A gap between each step on the second flight of steps allows light to filter through, and offers the feeling of a floating staircase from beneath. Part of the kitchen was designed underneath the staircase, while the other part was on the other side, with a corridor leading to one of the bedrooms dividing these two spaces

This space recedes as it goes upwards to allow for maximum light, which practically filters to all the spaces in the daytime. A series of openable strategically placed windows offers a flowing natural ventilation to all the rooms. Lightness is not only expressed through the use of raw materials (steel, exposed concrete and wood) and minimal design of the furniture, but also very boldly through multiple items. The staircase begins as a continuous folded steel plate with wooden slabs on the goings and changes. A gap between each step on the second flight of steps allows light to filter through, and offers the feeling of a floating staircase from beneath. The ceiling of the bedroom on the second floor is constructed using lightweight materials; a structural wooden deck supported on steel beams. All the spaces are now strategically placed in order to maximise space and comfort for the users. Part of the kitchen was designed underneath the staircase, while the other part was on the other side, with a corridor leading to one of the bedrooms dividing these two spaces. However, once in the kitchen area, it feels like a united space overlooking the internal yard. A small table with a stool forms part of the kitchen and is positioned in such a way that it faces exactly the east side to maximise natural light at sunrise (for breakfast).

By opening up the thick wall connecting the first room to the newly built extension, the space was long and gave a sense of a narrow corridor-like space. This was widened up using strong horizontal elements in the flooring design, ceiling/soffit/lighting design, and also by the bold tv/dining unit design which serves the division of spaces well, while still offering an open plan concept. This particular piece of furniture was designed to have two completely different sensations when seeing it from both sides, as it serves the use of the living room from one side and the use of the dining room from the other, thus maximising space efficiently. In fact, mostly all of the furniture was customdesigned for the same reason. Steve: ‘Being a small house with limited space, I wanted to create practical and easy storage spaces throughout, so that the homeowners with their busy lifestyles could enjoy the home with maximum flexibility. Apart from creating an efficient house where everything has an accessible place, it also reduces the likely clutter, giving the impression of a larger space. ‘The limited size of the property and the homeowners’ vast specification for the house was difficult to meet. However, I found that by using all the spaces efficiently, I started off with this scenario and ended up with a completely different one, in turn meeting their requirements. Now the doctor homeowners have their own private spaces, can entertain easily, and most importantly, have a restful place to relax - when they have the chance, that is.’ 033

A

fter making the three storey climb to the apartment for the first time, Architect Sandro Valentino explains how he was misled by the presence of two doorways on the stairwell landing – thinking that there were two apartments per floor. It turned out that on each floor of the block there was one apartment, each with two entrances – the reason for which was initially unclear. The existing room configuration was also a little irrational. The main entrance led directly into a sitting room which was located towards the rear of the property and looked over the internal courtyard. This led onto a large nondescript central room, the main function of which appeared to be a dining roomcome-passageway, which in turn led onto a small kitchen and bathroom at the rear of the apartment. Two spacious bedrooms – which occupied the largest and brightest rooms – were located on the other side of the apartment overlooking St. Dominic Street. After examining the existing apartment layout, the function of the second doorway into the apartment suddenly became evident: the bedrooms were interlinked, therefore there was no way to access one bedroom without having to pass through the other, unless one went out onto the landing in the apartment block stairwell. Sandro Valentino: ‘Although the layout required certain interventions and alterations in order to be more suited to today’s living requirements, I remember being impressed by the nicely proportioned rooms, as well as by the amount of natural light which penetrated all corners of the property, which was one of the main factors that convinced me to buy the apartment.’ The crux of the renovation project was to shift the entrance from the sides to the centre of the apartment, as well as to mirror the current apartment layout – shifting the living areas to the front rooms, and the bedrooms and bathrooms to the back, whilst at the same time maximising storage space. It was therefore decided to close off the two apartment entrances and replace them with one central entrance. Apart from moving around some internal doorways, the structural alterations were kept to a minimum, as the original room volumes and proportions were something the architects wanted to retain. One of the main interventions was the construction of a concrete mezzanine towards the back of the entrance hall, which had the dual function of lowering the bathroom ceilings whilst simultaneously creating much needed storage space above. In order not to block the light entering the hall from the rear courtyard, a large window was opened, allowing light to penetrate through the storage mezzanine and into the entrance hall.

035

HW SPACES

The kitchen was inserted into a low, white volume within the dining room. The low splashback allows the kitchen preparation area to be concealed from the dining area, yet also allows people within the two spaces to interact with each other. Black, exposed stove pipes were used to extract kitchen fumes to the outside, with the extractor concealed within a hanging white box over the kitchen. High storage is located within the pantry, concealed behind a large sliding door at the rear of the kitchen

Two lightweight volumes were then dropped into the otherwise unnecessarily large entrance hall, and one in the front room which was to contain the kitchen. These volumes increased in scale the closer they got to the more private areas of the apartment, leaving a breach in between them which was to serve as the entrance to the master bedroom. This intervention added a new dynamic, designed as evident additions to the property – their smooth finish which contrasted with the textured old walls. Two of these volumes were stopped short from the ceiling in order not to compromise the original volume of the rooms. Apart from the kitchen, these new spaces would serve to house a pantry (connected directly to the kitchen), a wardrobe, and two bathrooms, as well as helping to define the entrance hall. This intervention allowed the two front rooms to be used as a living room and a kitchen/dining room, whilst the back rooms were converted into two bedrooms – with all the required ancillary facilities in between. The apartment was practically gutted to allow for the new layout to come into being. Patterned cement floor tiles were carefully covered throughout the duration of the works, and polished once works were complete in order to restore their original colours and shine. A number of timber doors were re-located throughout the renovation process, with new doorways being opened up to match the dimensions of the existing door frames. The masonry blockwork texture on the walls was retained and white-washed to bounce as much light as possible throughout the apartment, whist the ceilings and steel beams were painted in a light grey to create a restrained contrast with the walls.

036

SPACES HW

Folding timber doors found within the property were meticulously restored and re-located to newly opened doorways in the living areas to be positioned near one another. A second doorway was opened up between the kitchen/dining room and the living room in order to maximise visual communication between the two spaces, yet retaining the original room volumes and proportions

Lightweight partitions were inserted into the newly positioned entrance hall to conceal storage towards the sides and bathrooms at the rear. Bathroom ceilings were lowered to create a storage mezzanine which also serves as a vertical skylight to illuminate the entrance hall. The master bedroom is accessed through a ‘breach’ in between the new partitions

Left: The bedroom suite was designed as a progression of spaces, from the wardrobe, through to the shower and WC cubicles, the bath, and finally the bed. Materials are limited to concrete, timber, and light coloured plaster. Above: The bed replaces the bathroom which previously existed within this space. The narrow width of the room allowed for a bed to be fitted between the walls, elevated on a raised timber platform which conceals additional storage Image ©Ellie Cutajar Bottom left: Moroccan tadelakt polished plaster, travertine and concrete were used as finishes within the spare shower room and guest, with an old wooden ladder adapted into a towel hanger Bottom centre: A narrow vertical strip window was cut into the wall to filter light into the main ensuite, accentuating the texture and qualities of the cross-sawn travertine used on the floor and walls of the room, in sharp contrast with the black fixtures, fittings, and shelving. A wash hand basin in cross-sawn travertine was positioned between the WC and shower cubicles, allowing it to be accessed from both spaces Bottom right: A bath clad in timber and travertine was positioned at the foot of the bed, partly sunken within the raised floor. Whilst aiding circulation around the apartment, the central entrance hall also served to highlight the dual aspect which came to exist within the apartment. Whilst the front rooms retained their original proportions and character, the master suite towards the rear of the property – accessed through a strategically placed ‘gap’ between the new lightweight walls – came to occupy a rather narrow, two-metre wide space which was previously occupied by the confined kitchen and bathroom. 038

Sandro: ‘This area – my favourite part of the apartment – was laid out in a linear, regimented, and functional manner; moving from the wardrobe, to the shower cubicle, WC cubicle (which shares a double-sided wash hand basin with the shower), onto the bath, and finally the bed. In this space, finishes change from rough walls to smooth plaster, from ornate patterned tiles to timeless concrete, travertine, and timber – creating a sense of alienation and detachment from the rest of the apartment.’

EM Architects

In addition to managing his practice, Dr. Edwin Mintoff lectures at the Faculty of the Built Environment, University of Malta. His architectural private has grown from humble beginnings in 1987 to become one of the largest, architectural and civil engineering firms on the island employing over 30 architects and supporting staff. Over the years the firm has been responsible for the development of a vast number of projects: urban interventions, residential developments, office buildings, touristic complexes, industrial buildings, commercial structures, educational facilities, health-care institutions, sports facilities, as well as national civil engineering projects. The firm is responsible for a number of award-winning projects, such as the Baystreet Complex in St Julians, and the restoration and adaptive reuse of the Treasury building at the Cottonera Waterfront. Other recent notable projects include the architectural design of the Fimbank Headquarters at St Julians and the BREEAM certified SkyParks office development at the Malta International Airport. Major projects currently under development include the development

of two high-rise mixed-use projects in Gzira (Metropolis Plaza and the recently approved 14East) and the redevelopment of the Mistra Village site in Xemxija.

The Office

The concept behind the design of the new offices was to create a larger space to accommodate the increasing number of employees whilst creating a new modern and efficient working environment that would reflect the new identity of the firm and encourage better work management. The design aimed to incorporate client meeting areas that would offer the peace and privacy required, whilst being in close proximity to the design teams responsible for the implementation and design of the projects. Elements such as recreation areas and underground parking were incorporated into the overall design. The lower floor is dedicated to the design workshop and studio while the upper floor is a more private and quiet area for meeting clients. The design is based on a modern open plan concept that encourages a collaborative team spirit conducive to sharing ideas and concepts. Light, sight, space and

transparency were the key values when drawing the office floor, aiming to create a pleasant working atmosphere. Surrounding large windows guarantee maximum input of natural light while offering views of Valletta that bring in additional energy and vitality. The predominant colour is white, while a yellow accent gives a burst of energy to an otherwise calm and tranquil environment. All the custom-designed furniture was aimed at maximising available storage space and making the most efficient use of the floor plan. Individual storage units for each employee offer the added advantage of ensuring that the space is left clutter-free and well organised. The layout of the office encourages a collaborate approach between all aspects of design, structural design, interior design, and civil engineering teams. All teams sit side-by-side and regularly interact with each other to adopt the most comprehensive design concept.

GRECH&VINCIARCHITECTURE &DESIGN

Grech & Vinci was founded by cousins Simon Grech and Andrew Vinci in 2008, joined by recent partner Alan Galea in 2010, who wanted to create designs that were functional but stylish, practical, contemporary and innovative. In the space of a few years the firm has grown to one that is now made up of eight employees, with a view to expand even further. The firm’s architects pride themselves on the fact that they like variety and like to think that little bit harder to come up with the right solution, regularly collaborating with artists and craftsmen to develop custom, innovative, quality design and architecture tailored to their clients’ needs. The firm’s portfolio includes commercial and residential projects. 202 Jewellery took its inspiration from the very jewels on display, presenting illuminated planes

of white as adornments, varying in size, function, materiality and luminance. Helena’s Villa, which attracted both local and international attention, embraces modernist forms which interpret the sense of protection given by a castle; monumental from the outside, but opening up into internal courtyards and light-filled living spaces.

The Office

Upon entrance of the Grech & Vinci offices located on Bisazza Street, Sliema, visitors are met with stark, white painted walls. Dashes of bright colours light up the rooms in the form of vibrant green, orange, blue, red, white, and beige pieces of furniture and accessories. The design of these rooms reflects the ethos of the architecture and design company which is to create clean, contemporary lines and volumes to create designs that intelligently maximise light, space and flexibility.

The bright colours are also a window into Grech & Vinci’s makeup; a young architecture firm, inspired by the possibilities of materials, spaces and thinking differently. The green, guitar pick-shaped table is a clever take on the token round table; there are no hierarchies here, and its employees operate on an equal basis. The green is serene - an apt choice of colour for the surface in which ideas are conceived, and where meetings are held, both amongst staff and clients. The offices comprise five main rooms: three drawing rooms, with black running desks, populated only by basics such as lamps and computers, a reception area and the boardroom, home to the signature meeting table. A small kitchenette completes this small but more than adequate working space.

Greta Design

Over the last eleven years Greta Design has flourished, now with a core team of three, as well as casual staff. The firm is involved in designing several large apartments in the Tigne Point development, TownSquare, PenderGardens, Portomaso and elsewhere, continually striving to create new and exciting ideas in beautiful harmony of colour, comfort and space. With a penchant for boutique hotel design, various exciting projects are underway, whilst Greta Design also works simultaneously on commercial projects throughout.

The Office

Up until three years ago, the previous Greta Design office space served its purpose well and was extremely productive, albeit it being compact. However, as projects and staff members increased, the space began to feel crammed and the idea of moving office arose. The current property that Greta Design is operating from today was vacant, backing the previous small design office. The main requirement for the new office was more space for staff and storage for catalogues, samples, reference books, etc. Another requirement was a decent size boardroom – as previously this was missing.

The design goal was to achieve a very comfortable and practical space; a userfriendly office that would lend itself to productivity. Now, the office layout is subtly divided into two areas. The rooms to the left of the entrance hall are where the team of designers spend their day – therefore the space is more simple, clean cut and crisp. The colour palette used is mainly white, Wenge, lime green and cork, creating a fresh and pleasant effect. The team also have their own meeting room where they can meet up with clients and suppliers. The entrance hall and the rooms to the right of the entrance are of a more elegant style altogether. This part of the office is mainly used by Greta and clients, incorporating her personal office and also the boardroom. There is also a very elegant guest toilet on this side of the office, whilst on the other side there is another toilet which ties in with the colour scheme mentioned earlier. The boardroom finishing materials are an extension of Greta’s personal office so that clients don’t feel any transitional change going from one room to the other. These two rooms are a lot warmer and generally softer in design - the colour palette used here is taupe, charcoal grey, white and grey stained oak, with the overall effect being a lot softer and more elegant. The furniture

in the boardroom is also repurposed antique furniture, which was all handpainted, whilst Greta’s office furniture was all custom-made to tie in with the same colour scheme. The walls in both these rooms are completely wallpapered for additional elegance. White chairs were chosen for both of these rooms for contrast against the darker walls and furniture. The entrance hall was designed to feel like that of a house. A stunning antique guilt mirror hangs above an antique walnut and marble table. A rosewood armchair was reupholstered in a contemporary striped, cut-velvet fabric, combining the old and the new perfectly. The splash of colour comes in through the flowers and orchids, which were purposely chosen to complete the atmosphere. The walls are embellished with large photos of Greta Design’s portfolio, which are framed in matte black frames with white mounts; the perfect final touch to the overall balanced design. (X,Y,Z) Architecture & Design

In 2013, Daniel Micallef, Janice Fiorentino and Daniel Camilleri teamed up to form (X,Y,Z); a dynamic young studio practicing architecture, spatial and interior design. The entire team is composed of a total of seven professionals which together address specific criteria of any individual project from concept design stage, to construction and finishes supervision. The aim is to create functional smart spaces where all people live and work; well-designed spaces that work in synchronicity to the clients’ lifestyles and requirements. (X,Y,Z) is currently engaged in several interesting residential, commercial and office projects, some of which will be completed by the end of 2015. The identity (X,Y,Z) refers to the Cartesian coordinate system which defines a space, and is the point of departure for the everyday virtual and physical reality.

The Studio

(X,Y,Z)’s young studio has just moved into new offices, centrally located in Birkirkara. The studio was designed using natural materials whilst maximising the use of the space. It was imperative for the offices to be clean and elegant, but also radiating a positive fun vibe reflecting its young team. On entrance, a dark stairwell leads visitors up to the studio cocoon. The stark contrast and its darkness represent the transition from the clutter and disorganisation of the city environs to the fresh and creative design studio. The dim source of light that leads visitors up the flight simply creates a soft, diffused and reflected trail of light. This psychological transition is deemed important for both the team and the visitors alike. Beyond, the place floods with natural light. (X,Y,Z) believes in the exposure to natural light as it is considered a priority for both the physical and psychological health and well-being to the users. White surfaces have been chosen for the design and drawing offices, as well as to

maximise the reflection of natural light. A grey concrete floor sets the canvas to all the activities within the office, whilst custom wood cabinetry warms up the space. Wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling oak cabinetry was designed to maximise storage space, and also to conceal the unsightly peripherals when not in use. A dark perforated steel mesh forms the backdrop of the hallway and partly conceals another flight of Carrara marble stairs that leads visitors to a spacious natural light flooded boardroom. The soft fabrics add a home living room ambiance, encouraging users to be more at ease and relaxed. The space on the rooftop is converted to a colourful lounging space with a touch of greenery for that mental break and moment of retreat. Nine Yards Design Studio

The name Nine Yards was inspired from “The Whole Nine Yards” - essentially meaning that the company is a onestop-shop. Directors Paul Hyzler and Luisa Diacono ensure that clients don’t simply receive a “design package”, yet then need to worry about finding and chasing contractors to carry out the work (correctly). The two offer a situation where they can take full responsibility of the job and ultimately ensure that the design is carried out on-time and as planned. Paul Hyzler handles the Business Management, as well as the Turn-key Division, while Luisa Diacono heads the Design & Creative. In short, Luisa dreams up the big ideas while Paul has nightmares on how to get them done! Nine Yards is a new company, yet in addition to residential projects, the team has worked on a number of exciting commercial projects, which include the interior design and full turn-key of companies such as Green Tube (online gaming), Giacomo's Cafe' Bistro, Yellow Pages, Capua Dental Unit, and StudioFifteen, amongst others. Additional Nine Yard services include the sourcing, restoration, and sale of furniture.

The Studio

When looking for an office a year ago, Luisa Diacono and Paul Hyzler required a good location, easy parking, and a lot of natural light. When they found the St. Julians office, it ticked all of the boxes: it was stylish, large yet contained, and the mezzanine effect was coveted. It was a space that clients would immediately know they had entered a design studio, rather than any other type of office. Luisa Diacono: ‘As a design firm, first impressions are everything; when a client walks into your studio, they immediately form an impression.’ In the beginning, the studio was a blank canvas. The team wasn’t after ‘cliche office furniture’, but rather pieces that would help the space become a welcoming and cosy second home. The style of the space already possessed a loft-type look. In turn, a fun eclectic look was brought in, using black as a base with pops of colour. The top floor is a shared office space, while the ground level is used as a meeting area. The lower level is a workshop and an employee area. To keep the open plan office clutter-free and tidy, sleek furniture was chosen, avoiding any overly bulky pieces that would swallow up the space. The round meeting table contrasts with the straight lines throughout the rest of the studio,

while the walnut wood adds warmth to the space. The chairs are made out of clear perspex to ensure that they don’t intrude on the small space. The book shelf behind the desk holds catalogues and samples, which are easy to reach in meetings, while the cork boards above help to display samples and mood boards. The blue double-height wall and mustard yellow entrance wall juxtapose the light grey upstairs walls, while everything else is black in order to keep the space light and calming, yet avoiding the stark contrast of white walls, floors and black furniture. The blue wall is lined with white framed different patterned and coloured scarf fabric trimmings that Luisa previously designed. Chairs are used to introduce splashes of colour and as decorative items. The yellow visitor’s chair offers a childlike playful feel, while the different textures and patterns of the red and white chair add interest. The wall above Luisa’s desk holds one of her favourite touches - the framed flower prints that came from a calendar purchased in Tuscany. The result is effective, adding colour, character, sentimentality - ‘but best of all, it didn't break the bank’. Above: Luisa Diacono and Paul Hyzler

IS MOULD DRIVING YOU UP THE WALL? Mould can grow on almost any substance when moisture such as condensation is present. Moulds, when they produce, make spores which can be carried by air currents and when these land on a moist surface they begin to grow. Mould feeds on nutrients such as cellulose which can be found in most papers and paints. Crown Trade Steracryl has a proven pedigree in the prevention of mould growth. Stringent testing by the PRA (The Paint Research Association) has found it to be an effective mould inhibitor over long periods of time.

Valentino Architects

Cousins Sandro Valentino & Peter Valentino studied architecture together at the University of Malta, graduating in 2008. They moved their separate ways to work in reputable design firms, yet seven years later their paths crossed again, and Valentino Architects was established in March 2015. The studio attracts design-oriented projects of varying scale that have a focus on detail, and believes in a collaborative approach to their work. Valentino Architects does not focus on the notion of “style”, but rather on creating quality spaces through a study of form, proportion, detailing and materials. Sustainability, passive energy design, and the interaction of natural light with architecture are pivotal aspects that run through all projects.

The Studio

The young architects were fortunate to find a property that suited the studio’s workspace requirements in the centre of Valletta. The space was originally part of one larger premises, divided at some point in its history into a number of smaller independent properties. The office was previously used as the premises for two other prominent design architects, which meant that it already possessed a number of well thought-out design elements to it. The challenge was to re-integrate these elements into their 052

new design, but at the same time create a new identity for the studio. The new design sought to invite users into a low-lit entrance hall at ground floor, accentuated by dark surfaces on the walls and floor. This creates a welcoming contrast to the outdoor sun, and a feeling of vitality as one gradually walks to the brighter workspace above. Already present floating above the entrance hall was a slatted wooden floor, particularly interesting as it allows users to peek down to the entrance hall from their workspace, establishing a visual communication between the two levels. The contrast in light intensity creates an interesting play of light that permeates from the bright workspace above to the low-lit environment below. Custom-made birch plywood L-shaped workstations, designed around the architects’ workspace requirements, allow a computer on one end whilst freeing up a large drawing surface on the other. The workstations occupy one side of the room to free up space for a library and reading area on the other. The language of the furniture design, with all workstations grouped together to form one entity, subconsciously emphasises the studio’s collaborative approach to their work with the users. A cork board wall extends up from the desks with drawings pinned to it that

animates the space and allows users to pin up documents for reference to current projects. Shelving is cleverly supported within the gaps of the slatted wooden face that forms the vertical end of the workstations. These provide personal shelving for each workstation, conveniently located at the end of the desk, and can accommodate any number of shelves in variable positions as required by the user. A large square slab of slate supported on bespoke steel legs forms the meeting room table in the room adjoining the main workspace. The square table responds to the existing square form of the room, and encourages users surrounding the table to engage in discussion – both for client meetings and team discussions on project development. A palette of natural materials is applied throughout - wood, Carrara marble, and indoor plants offer a healthy natural feel to the space. New insertions contrast with the texture and enormity of the whitewashed stone walls and the original patterned cement floor tiles, subtly relating the progression of change in the buildings’ lifespan. HW FLOORING FROM ITS NATURAL APPEARANCE AND WARMTH UNDERFOOT, WOOD CAN BE STRIKING, AND UNDOUBTEDLY HAS A TIMELESS APPEAL. WHICHEVER THE PREFERENCE, THERE ARE PROS AND CONS TO BUYING ENGINEERED WOOD VS LAMINATE PARQUET FLOORING. THE DECISION BETWEEN ONE OR THE OTHER LIES IN LIFESTYLE AND BUDGET

PERFECT PARQUET HARDWOOD

ENGINEERED HARDWOOD

Hardwood floors are made from solid, natural wood, with a variety of wood species to choose from.

The best way to describe engineered hardwood flooring is to think of it as a hybrid; it’s a little bit of laminate and a little bit of hardwood.

The entire plank is made from wood, and is the only material used in the manufacturing of the floors. Modern hardwood is typically made with a tongue and groove system for easy installation. It’s easy to sand and refinish, but does require an amount of maintenance to keep it looking good. It’s easier to damage than laminate or engineered wood - not only does it dent easier, but it can be severely damaged with water (the boards will swell and expand). Hardwood flooring undoubtedly looks and feels fantastic, but it is almost always more expensive than laminate or engineered wood parquet.

Its core is usually plywood or high-density fibreboard (HDF) and the top layer is composed of a hardwood veneer which is glued atop the core to mimic nearly any species of hardwood. Engineered hardwood has the natural characteristics of the selected wood species as opposed to a photographic layer (which is what laminate is). When people choose engineered hardwood over natural hardwood, it’s usually because it offers greater moisture and heat resistance due to its core material. Above: Pastel oak plank, oil and brushed engineered wood flooring from GRF Design Concepts

FLOORING HW LAMINATE Laminate is durable, cost-effective and is available in a variety of colours, textures and sizes. It’s highly versatile, and the core of product is typically made of High Density Fiber (HDF) as opposed to actual slabs of wood. The top layer is a photographic layer which is designed to mimic the look desired (hardwood, bamboo, knotted wood, etc). Laminate planks are typically 1cm thick and are installed using a tongue and groove locking system, meaning it can be installed or uninstalled with ease. Laminate is the most durable and easiest to clean type of parquet, and can handle the most abuse.

THE BLOSSOM OYA The Oya is a terracotta vessel that’s planted in the ground to naturally water a garden. A new idea using old technology, the Oya can dramatically reduce water waste and time, since it only has to be filled every seven to 10 days. www.growoya.com

The Blossom is a new smart sprinkler system that enables users to automatically program and control their watering schedule with a smartphone, tablet or computer. Created by former Skype, Vizio, Linksys and Cisco executives and developers, the system can reduce the chance of overwatering and save money on water bills. www.myblossom.com

WILD PETUNIA Now available at Piscopo Gardens - the beautiful and dynamic Ruellia (wild petunia), with its striking purple trumpets produced on a daily basis in large amounts. They’re ideal to place in the sun and can be grown in a variety of different ways; as a hedge, as a ground cover, or as a bush in a pot. They need regular watering during the summer months, as well as regular bi-weekly fertiliser to promote more flowering. www.piscopogardens.com

KAMI YON The new KAMI Yon sofa by SLIDE recalls traditional origami technique. The ergonomic morphology of the armrests creates a comfortable shape that adapts to the human body. It’s available in various colours, matt or glossy lacquer, and a luminous version is also available. Suitable for indoor or outdoor use in residential or commercial applications. From traditional to contemporary

GARDEN HW

CVC Architecture transforms a traditional Balzan garden into a contemporary and welcoming outdoor space Design & Architecture: CVC Architecture Photography: Marc Spiteri Styling: Monika Rutishauser

071

HW GARDEN

O

riginally a traditional garden, the Balzan site was split on two levels, occupied primarily by citrus trees - an orchard with a symmetrical layout at the upper level with only a central path. Therefore the amount of usable space was virtually inexistent. A bare smaller lower area was the only entertainment space available, yet this space was damp, shoddy and difficult to maintain. The homeowners commissioned CVC Architecture to create a more welcoming space, inclusive of a pool and entertainment areas. The site was an existing garden to an imposing townhouse. The 072

house had been recently refurbished to a high standard, therefore accessibility was an added challenge. Most work had to be carried out by hand due to the limited access to the site. This was taken into consideration at the early design stage, where it was decided to locate the pool at the upper garden level, thus building up the pool and reducing excavation on site. The architects’ proposal was to position the pool so that its shape and dimensions retained the linearity of the space, while the ordered row of trees were kept on one side. The remaining trees were carefully uprooted and relocated off site.

GARDEN HW The pool was inserted into the ground on the other side and surrounded by a treated timber deck, which climbs up one side to conceal an existing but shabby boundary wall and includes storage and services. An orderly planter sits above this. The built-up pool was clad in natural sand-stone, while the exposed side of the structure gives the impression that the water basin was simply “pushed into place”, now blending in with the “old” garden surrounding it. The previously unused upper area has now been transformed into a luxury sun-deck and chill-out area, using contemporary, yet natural materials. The actual pool was designed with an ultra-shallow area where one can lounge, place a deck chair or simply sit and chat; an ideal place also for children to frolic. Jets inserted into the floor create a horizontal or “lie-down” jacuzzi, a different concept to the norm. This area was clad in a glittering perlato mosaic, subtly distinguishing it from the rest of the pool – an island of respite. The custom cut sand-stone cladding was carried around as the coping, creating a linear drain for the pool, and consequently a seamless boundary of water. The lower area was an exercise of cleaning out the space by removing clutter and reorganising the existing services. The old floor, which was previously covered in moss growth was replaced with a “pietra serena” hard stone flooring, offering a clean, contemporary, yet neutral finish. A patch of artificial turf frames the elevated pool.

BILL’S WINE RECOMMENDATIONS: PAN FRIED RED SNAPPER WITH VEGETABLE RATATOUILLE 2014 MEDINA ROSÉ GRENACHE CABERNET I.G.T. MALTESE ISLANDS ‘The strongest part of this dish is the vegetable ratatouille with the aubergines, zucchini and capsicums, which will surely overpower the delicate red snapper fillets. So for that reason, either a full-flavoured white will be required, or a fruity dry rosé. Personally, I have always liked chilled dry rosé wines with red snapper, especially when they’re panfried with the skin on. So I am recommending this Maltagrown blend of ripe Grenache and Cabernet grapes which will not only go perfectly with the fish, but also has the required weight and body needed for the ratatouille.’

ROASTED BABY CALAMARI WITH QUINOA 2014 GRAN CAVALIER BARREL FERMENTED CHARDONNAY D.O.K. SUPERIOR MALTA ‘This is a dry white wine dish without a doubt, although a dry rosé will work as well. The white also needs to be a wine with a bit of body to cope with the fairly strong flavours of the tarragon, chives and celery. Also depending on the nuttiness of the quinoa I would opt for a lightly oaked wine, such as the Gold medal-winning Gran Cavalier barrel fermented Chardonnay. The weight of this soft, fullflavoured wine will pair up perfectly with the sautéed baby calamari and the delicate, fluffy quinoa.’

SOUS VIDE ROCK FISH WITH BABY PAC CHOI 2014 GRAND VIN DE HAUTEVILLE VIOGNIER D.O.K. SUPERIOR MALTA ‘Very clean fish flavours infused with herbs will evolve in these vacuum bags packed with the rock fish fillets, basil and parsley - and these delicate flavours will require a clean, fruity, dry white wine to accompany them. Equally, the steamed pac choi and celery leaves will require the same style of wine. The 2014 vintage Hauteville Viognier is somewhat lighter than previous vintages and will go perfectly with this refreshing mild dish with its subtle seafood flavours.’
