EDITOR’S LETTER

HW

This Issue. There is something emotionally uplifting and cheering about the arrival of warmth and days of blue sky and sunshine. It’s not just nature which unfurls itself and turns its face to the sun - it’s something we do as well, sprucing up our outdoor space, readying ourselves for the new season. This issue, therefore, is all about getting ready for the summer months to come. Be inspired by the homes, all of which have strong exterior areas and gardens as well as interiors that link seamlessly to the outside; in the Outdoor Living Special, we look at the trend for the outdoor kitchen as well as the movement for turning your roof terrace into an outdoor room; go shopping from our pick of great outdoor furniture and barbecues. As well we focus on the interior living room this issue, highlighting the great brands that are available locally plus shining a light on shelving, a key but often under the radar feature that can make a room. Enjoy!

HANGING ABOUT

Inspired by the suspended nests of the Weaver bird is the Cacoon, a cool mix of hanging garden chair and hammock. It’s designed by Canadian couple, Nick and Sarah MacDonald, who saw the birds’ nests while trekking through the Mexican jungle and were ‘immediately struck by their unique beauty; they were so peaceful.’ Back home, many months of drawing and testing resulted in the Cacoon that’s made from a highquality mix of cotton and polyester, making it weatherproof against wind, rain, sun and sea. The Cacoon comes in a range of colours and styles. This one is Songo Earth. Available from Studio Moda 017

VIVA VENICE Architect Chris Briffa is leading a team that will exhibit at the 2018 Venice Biennale which this year is all about architecture. Chris has been invited to create an installation by the Global Art Affairs Foundation, a Dutch non-profile organisation that aims to heighten awareness about the more philosophical themes in contemporary art, architecture and culture in general, and along these lines has organised an exhibition on the theme ‘Time – Space – Existence’. Chris’s exhibition is on the antiporta, the inner door found in traditional Maltese homes that is fast disappearing as contemporary architecture does away with it. The installation will re-create an antiporta setting in Palazza Mora, and organisers - as well as Chris, curator Andrew Borg Wirth, architectural assistant Katrina Galea, project coordinator Louise Spokes, photographer David Zammit and research and consultation by Lisa Gwen Baldacchino - also hope to feature images and clips submitted by the public, and be able to tell the story of those antiportas featured. If you would like to submit images go to www.antiporta.com. See page 122 for images.

Old To NEW

Don’t throw out that old chair! Shabby Chic explains how re-upholstering it can give it a gorgeous new look

Today there is a strong wave of renewed interest in restoring old and used furniture, both as a movement against waste but also because of the trend to mix old and new and this has made re-upholstery popular. Worn and tired pieces, such as armchairs, sofas and settees, can easily be given a new lease of life with just a little imagination and budget - this elegant bergère-style armchair, dating roughly from the early to mid-20th century, is a perfect example. The first step is choosing the fabric with which to re-upholster the chair as this decides the other elements. Having selected a rich patterned fabric, with fairly bold colours, we then decided on plain and neutral colour of paint for the frame, to retain an attractive balance. The chair’s worn and faded gilded wood surfaces were given several coats of a soft white, chalk paint which also transformed the look of the chair from traditional to one that was much more contemporary. Once the painting was completed and dry, the original fabric was removed and replaced with a new plusher version, based on a similar colour scheme (as the seating itself was still in fairly good condition, no repairs were necessary). The fabric was then fixed in place, ensuring that the pattered design sat well in each area, and finally a matching dark blue braid was glued to the edges of the fabric for a finishing touch. The chair was now ready for its new life, after a facelift that purposely conserved much of its previous style and colours, yet endowed it with a decidedly catchy contemporary look. 020

Designer Matthew Williamson is known for his brightly coloured and highly decorative designs and his spring/summer Butterfly Homes collection for Debenhams doesn’t disappoint. MEET THE CREATIVES Jackie Roberts

A

fter obtaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications Studies in the UK, Jackie went on to hold a wide variety of jobs, from teacher and academic researcher to photographer and arts administrator. A meeting with artists in South Africa inspired a change of direction, and 20 years ago she returned to college to study welding and artistic metalwork and has never looked back. Since she moved to Gozo in 2001, she has been a full-time metal artist and undertakes commissions from private clients as well as showing in exhibitions and teaching artistic metal work to private students. She has her own workshop and home studio gallery in Xewkija, Gozo which people can visit by appointment. What do you make? I have made hundreds of different things; a huge variety from purely decorative and sometimes fanciful to functional pieces of all shapes and sizes as well as wearable art in the form of neckwear, amulets, brooches, hair adornment and body masks. Over the years I have made everything from a three-metre long Great White Shark, lots of marine life, mirrors, door furniture, lighting, bowls and vessels, hanging mobiles, wind vanes... But mostly I create 2D sometimes 3D sculptures for the walls of homes. I like to create work purely from my imagination and interpretation of the world around me. My work crosses the

022

www.facebook.com/jackierobertsmetalart boundaries between art and craft but is always contemporary and hand-crafted. I think I have quite a ‘feminine’ approach to the medium even though the work can be physically challenging, dirty, sweaty and sometimes hazardous. When you are a metal worker don’t expect to ever have clean hands and finger nails! What materials do you use? I work mostly in copper, mild steel and brass using hand and power tools to cut, shape, mark, form and create texture; then bring out the natural hues of the metal by artistic burning (a bit like painting with heat, creating depth of colour). I don’t apply any chemical patinas or paint to create colour. My pieces are finished with protective lacquer; gloss or opaque depending on the desired effect. I sometimes incorporate scrap metal, found objects, stone, glass, wood and plant material into my work. What are the limitations of metal? Metal is an ephemeral material and it is also very tactile. Metal working is an ancient skill and beautiful examples have been dug up which are amazingly preserved. I do get frustrated when people ask, ‘Will it rust?’ Does a car rust even when protected by all kinds of paint and protective coatings? Nothing lasts forever and forever is a very, very long time. If you want to put metal art outside in the wind, rain, sea air or display in a very humid environment then of course it will change in appearance but that gradual ageing and patina can be a beautiful evolution of the piece.

What is the best part of your work? I am passionate about metal in all its forms and I love what I do. Creating work for exhibitions is great because you can set yourself big challenges and get really absorbed in the process of producing a collection of work. Over the years pieces have taken on more of a story-telling

quality such as ‘Sundowners at Zeppi’s’ (above) and this is reflected in the title and the use of materials so I love it when people really ‘get it’ and appreciate the whole process and idea behind a piece, because it means they understand an aspect of me. The other part which is really important is all the lovely people I have met through my work – clients, art metal fans, other artists and makers in all media, from all over the world. I have had the opportunity to show my work in some great venues from botanic gardens to restaurants and old farmhouses; from contemporary gallery spaces to historic venues such as the Cittadella and Il-Hagar on Gozo; Fort St. Elmo and the Fortifications Interpretation Centre in Valletta.

HW THE EDIT SMOOTH OPERATORS Bang & Olufsen has just launched a new luxurious finish for two of its prestige products, the BeoVision Eclipse TV and BeoLab 50 speakers. Both are now available in an aluminium Brass Tone and Smoked Oak finish, giving them an eye-catching element of artisanship and luxury. The BeoVision Eclipse model now offers aluminium brass-tone edges and motorised floor stand for a TV that’s elegant from all angles. The panel has been given a Smoked Oak finish for a decadent edge that exudes the luxuriousness of its design. The TV combines Bang & Olufsen’s acoustic capabilities with LG Electronics’ leading OLED TV technology, including the brand’s webOS Smart TV platform and 4K video processing capabilities. The TV’s integrated, 450 watt 3-channel SoundCentre offers stereo performance and centre channel control. The BeoLab 50 speakers have also received the same opulent upgrade with anodised brass-tone detailing and smoked oak lamellas to create a similar statement of luxury design. A high-end active loudspeaker, it blends radical audio technology, elegant aesthetics and meticulous craftsmanship, and is tailored for all the ways to enjoy sound in the home, such as sweet spot listening, unforgettable house parties and cinematic experiences. RECLINE & RELAX Twenty five years ago Boris Arcidiacono began importing recliners from one of the most famous comfort furniture brands, Norway’s Stressless. Now for the first time, they will be displaying every model that the company makes in their showroom. ‘With such broad styles of interior decoration and trends today, it is important to be able to offer more or less customised solutions to a client; creating a chair which not only fits them perfectly, but also their homes too,’ says Gabriella Arcidiacono. Almost 40 new models, with a variety of bases and including those for offices, are available. Also new is a full range of Stressless home cinema sofas.

Two major brands have expanded over the past two months, opening new shops and showrooms. British firm Matalan has capitalised on the success of its first two stores in Malta, in Sliema and Figura, by opening two new ones, this time in Republic Street, Valletta, and in Smart Shopping Complex, B’Kara. Both will stock a vast selection of homewares. 024

KITCHEN COMPETITION

Proman Interiors have entered the Global Kitchen Design Competition run by German kitchen manufacturer Leicht. Each year it invites architects and designers from around the world to submit kitchen projects that are either finished projects or in draft form. A short-list is drawn up and these are voted on by all participants pictured is last year’s winner from Austria; 23 countries took part. Proman is the only Maltese company participating. ‘We entered because presenting our designs to a global audience can only be advantageous to Malta, Proman Interiors and our clients,’ says the company’s Chris Conlon. ‘It also gives architects and designers a platform to compete globally with others who are at the top.’ What do they think makes their entry special? ‘Uniqueness,’ says Chris. ‘The kitchen is the heart of every home and with each project there is a different style. We would like to enter from the ultra-modern to the character houses to show what a variation we have here in Malta.’

Ferraracasa, which already has a store in Mriehel that focuses on household items, has newly opened a showroom on Triq Dun Karm in Birkirkara. This space will offer fitted kitchens, bedrooms, dining rooms as well as sofas, bathrooms and office space.

Milan Design Week 2018

‘18

April’s Salone del Mobile, the annual design week held in Milan, was the largest and most popular of its 57 years, with more than 430,000 visitors from 188 countries visiting nearly 200 exhibitors. It is still the most influential design event of the year, with trends seen at the fair rolled out in the months that follow. Here are ones to look out for...

LET’S GO RETRO The retro trend doesn’t look like going away anytime soon. Former founder of Moooi, the Dutch entrepeneur Casper Vissers, launched a new furniture and lighting company at the show, called Revised. Although designed by young Durch designer Sjoerd Vroonland, all the products were made from traditional materials such as wood, stone, glass and steel and referenced classic designs of the early 20th century, with shapes curvy and soft. ‘We believe we come with a new design concept but obviously it's very clearly influenced by things from the past,’ said Casper Vissers. ‘It is a modern design company but we look back and we get inspired by the beautiful shapes, concepts and atmospheres of the past.’ Although inspired by tradition, the company uses modern technology to allow for the pieces to be machinemade rather than hand-crafted, keeping prices down.

LET’S GET TOGETHER

Collaborations are the name of the designer game at Milan and two of the standout ones this year included internationally renowned Dutch designer Marcel Wanders teaming up with Italian brand Natuzzi to create two collections, Agronomist and Oceanographer and Denmark’s Hay working with American companies Sonos and We Work, the trio challenging the idea of ‘everyday living and working environments’, by juxtaposing modern products against the ornate and historic setting Palazzo Clerici through a number of eye-catching and colourful installations.

TUNE INTO TECHNOLOGY FEELING GOOD

Texture and tactility was a strong trend with engraved metalwork, carved wood, visible seams and stitching, (yet more) velvet and tweed as an upholstery fabric. One of the more stunning examples was this metalwork vase, a collaboration between Japanese studio Nendo and specialist metal company Wakazono, who machined a 15 kilogram vase from a 100 kilogram block of aluminium. The process, which took seven months, involved using tiny cutters of less than a millimetre in diameter to create four layers of grooves that together created a shimmering lace effect.

STOP THE WASTE

The environment and the fight against waste was another trend. To raise awareness of climate change, Beirutbased designer Richard Yasmine created a series of handblown light bulbs that rest on bird's nests. Leading textile manufacturer Kvadrat invited architects and designers to make a range of products using Sold Textile Board (STB), a new hard material that’s made only from end-of-life fabrics and off-cuts. Objects from recycled plastics, such as the vases pictured below also featured strongly.

Technology was a major theme. Google made its Milan debut by working with renowned trend forecaster Li Edelkoort on Software, an exhibition showing how electronic devices such as VR headsets and real-time translation headphones can be transformed into tactile, inconspicuous, experience-enhancing accessories. Sony unveiled research that showed how homes of the future will feature hidden sensor technology which can turn objects such as vases and candleholders into light switches or music systems. Dassault Systèmes examined air pollution including Breath/ ng, an air-purifying installation made up of large suspended coils of a special pollution-neutralising fabric designed by Japanese studio Kengo Kuma

GOING AROUND SO CUTE

Possibly the cutest lights unveiled at the fair were the Pet Lights, a collection of table lamps from Moooi that resemble an owl, rabbit and penguin, and feature glass bodies and hold details. 028

From rounded sofas such as the Julep from Tacchini, to chairs with curved backs, curves could be seen across many of the furniture brands. Often teamed with warm neutral shades, soft velvets or rich accent colours, they created a look that felt cocooning and cosy.

LOFT DOES MILAN Josette Schembri Vella of Loft spent three days at the fair, walking a whopping 45 kilometres. ‘As usual, it was overwhelming!’ she says. ‘The beauty in some of the halls was beyond perfection! The trend this year is anything and everything woven – the old tradition of woven cane is very much back in fashion!’ Here’s what particularly caught her eye.

The homes in this issue are all filled with bright sunshine, an expansive sense of space and a connection to the exterior that makes for relaxed outdoor living. Over the page, architect Rebecca Zammit has created a bold and very beautiful home. On page 040, interior designer Adrian Micallef took a shell and transformed it into a comforable place to live, while on page 046 a simple beach-side house was made into something very special. Finally, a stunning terrace with views of Xlendi is the star of the home on page 052. 031

Living space: the main living area on the ground-floor is open-plan but the mix of materials creates character as well as zoning each section of it. Part of the ceiling is of exposed concrete which gives texture as well as injecting an interesting industrial vibe. Above the kitchen is a plastered ceiling that allows for task lighting to be neatly installed. The engineered wood floor adds warmth; beneath it, to tackle the problems caused by humidity, is an aerated flooring system that allows air to circulate beneath the wood. In the lounge area, a large sofa from Form holds the space. Situated by the floor-to-ceiling glass doors, it is possible to enjoy a garden view when seated inside. Sheer linen curtains add the warmth and soft texture but are also practical - in summer they also protect against insects flying into the house

W

ith a width of just five metres, the challenge of this house was overcoming the restrictions that a narrow space brings. This architect Rebecca Zammit has done beautifully, creating a home for herself and her husband that is so stylish and comfortable that the lack of width is barely noticed. Key was taking advantage of the elongated nature of the plot, some 35 metres or so, to extend the house lengthways, but an inspiring way with materials and smart design features also play their part. The project took two years and commenced with the demolition of partof the traditional Maltese townhouse that was here before. ‘The front of the townhouse had the typical arch and Maltese tiles but the back rooms of the house were quite random and cut off from the garden and with only one small window there was little light,’ says Rebecca. ‘The front part of the house had the most architectural value and was true to the character of traditional townhouses, so we decided to keep the front part only.’ Kitchen: in dramatic black, the kitchen makes a great design statement. Both the units and the island are made of wood that has been layered with Fenix (fenixforinteriors.com), a relatively new acrylic resin material that is heatresistant, water-repellent and anti-bacterial. Available in large sizes, it allows for a seamless surface. Opposite are floor-to-ceiling cabinets for general storage; in pale concrete grey, they don’t overwhelm the narrow space. Both sides of storage hide structural pillars 035

Main bedroom: the first floor is dominated by the main bedroom where floor-to-ceiling windows ensure it is a light-filled room. The tap, hung from above, ingeniously resembles a light. The result is that the entrance to the home is a cool space of Maltese-tiled floors and white walls which lead both visually and physically to the contemporary open-plan living space of dining, kitchen and living room. Here Maltese tiles give way to flooring of engineered wood, a warm contrast to the ceiling of exposed concrete and long storage walls clad in either black or concrete grey. Light is in abundance, flowing in from the floor-to-ceiling doors that lead to the garden and also from the first floor via the skylight which forms part of the bedroom floor above. ‘It gives the ground floor an open feel, and from the bedroom makes it possible to see the living area from a different perspective,’ says Rebecca. ‘It also allows a visual connection between the two spaces, without losing any floor space.’ The skylight has also been carefully positioned in relation to the sun. ‘In winter, the sun reaches the skylight so we can take advantage of it,’ says Rebecca. ‘In summer, however, the sun is so high that the rays do not come in and so we get light without heat.’

037

HW SPACES The placement of the kitchen led the demarcation of the different living zones on the ground floor. ‘We are often in the kitchen at the end of the day, or while entertaining, so I wanted it to be the focus,’ she says. ‘Also, the sofa close to the garden allows us to enjoy the outside even when seated inside.’ Opposite the black cabinets in the kitchen is a wall of further storage, this time clad in concrete grey. ‘You can never have too much storage!’ says Rebecca. ‘But both the grey units and black ones also conceal structural pillars that needed to be built.’ Upstairs the couple’s bedroom is also full of light thanks to more floor-to-ceiling windows that also allow for a stunning view over the countryside to the sea. Another smaller window looks out onto an internal courtyard which provides cross ventilation as well as giving another green perspective. By this window, the bathtub has been strategically placed, open-plan in the room. ‘I didn’t want a bath in a small dark room with no outlook,’ says Rebecca. ‘I wanted to be able to relax with a view.’ Outside in the back garden, decking leads onto lawn, and trees and other shrubs add both the freshness of green and the softness of nature. ‘We wanted to be able to use the garden, not just look at it,’ says Rebecca. This the couple did when they moved in last July. ‘We have really enjoyed living in the house for the past year,’ says Rebecca. ‘We get to see how the house changes with every season, and how light and nature really have an impact on the interior spaces, making us feel closer to nature.’

Above, Rebecca on the new, metal staircase that leads to the top floor of the house. The perforation ensures the flow of light is not blocked. Top right, Rebecca’s office which is within the old part of the house and where, again, there is plenty of chic storage

nterior designer Adrian Micallef took on this house in shell form which meant creating a home from a space that was devoid of personality. The homeowners brief revolved around materials and mood, leaving the particulars to Adrian to decide upon. ‘Their brief was that they wanted an airy, light house with a touch of fun,’ he says. ‘They also liked my idea to combine an industrial effect of exposed concrete and American walnut.’ Before he could get down to the finer details, however, he had to make the structure resemble a home. ‘It was a large and technical project, the electricity and plumbing needed a great deal of planning’ he says. ‘Working with a large open space where concrete pillars and beams were required, the design of the soffits and ceiling needed careful thought and preparation as the design involved exposing some of the concrete.’ On the facade he added insulation to alleviate the heat in summer and the cold in winter. Grey marble was also used on the exterior, giving the property a touch of style and elegance. In arranging the internal space, Adrian chose a large, open-plan ground floor, the kitchen at one end, leading onto the dining area and the living room beyond making the space comfortable, airy and well laid out whether just for everyday living or entertaining guests.

Left, entrance: the vibrant yellow of the front door works beautifully with both the Iroko wood surround and grey marble step, creating a chic welcome Above, exterior: tiles, both concrete and wood-effect, along with artificial turf create an attractive outdoor area. A graphic concrete structure above the table adds shade and also supports the terrace of the bedroom above 041

Kitchen: American walnut used as an accent adds style to the kitchen. Within the upper shelving, Adrian has included a wine rack. Double-height space: a light, designed by Adrian and made of black metal with gold-coloured shades, extends down from the upper ceiling, injecting a graphic look

Dining space: a custom-made table in American walnut is teamed with fabric chairs, the blue picking up the hue on the nearby wall. The wooden door conceals the store under the stairs. The painting on the wall is by Adrian and is done in the palette of the house

Along with the open-plan living area, large apertures that look out over the garden along with a double-height ceiling over the kitchen, give a real sense of space. Despite such a large volume, however, Adrian managed to create warmth by choosing materials which included wood-effect tiles and American walnut cladding. The added texture of the concrete ceiling works to keep the space feeling unique and interesting. The kitchen is given the wow factor with a custom designed light, like most of the furniture and fittings, designed by Adrian. Extending down through the double height space, it adds an eyecatching sculptural element to the space. 043

Guest bathroom: on the wall is Venetian plastering which gives a marble effect without grouting. American walnut is teamed with yellow and a round mirror adds a finishing touch

Concealing less attractive structural features included hiding the concrete stairs that lead up to the first floor. ‘You could see them as soon as you walked in and I immediately knew I could turn them into a feature,’ says Adrian. So he built a false wall and clad it in wood, and also designed a window within an existing wall through which you can see the stairs, but which also allows light to pass through. The colour palette is neutral with blues and a splash of yellow. ‘I wanted blue to reflect the sky and the pool,’ says Adrian. ‘And the yellow sparks it up a bit, and it makes it feel fun and happy.’

Main bedroom: the blue of the walls reflects the sky and co-ordinates with pale wood-effect tiles on the floor Main bathroom: Calacatta marble along with concrete tiles makes for a tranquil bathroom. The unit is custom-made, the shade of blue picking up the tones of the marble 045

‘While we may have wanted it to look extraordinary, it needed to be a real home, where real people live’

W

hile this house started off as a holiday home 10 years ago, homeowners Kobus Loots and Greg Shaw realised its potential to become their ideal permanent home, something bigger than just a little house with a sea view. ‘I saw a picture of an Australian house clad in wood with a modern architectural aesthetic,’ says Kobus, explaining the inspiration behind the new build that created the contemporary timber-frame house one sees today. ‘I would describe our space as a wooden shack by the sea, with a spin on the traditional,’ continues Greg. ‘Our brief to the architect was a beach home with a difference. But while we may have wanted it to look extraordinary, it needed to be a real home, where real people live.’ And that it is, albeit a rather stunning one.

The property, which stands on a 600m2-sized plot, was originally built with a glass bird aviary, 20 metres high, and this was used as the structure to connect the original home with the new extension. ‘We didn’t want to do more of the same,’ says Kobus of the build. ‘We wanted to create a mix of older elements with something more modern, otherwise things would be too bland.’ For the new wing, the couple also wanted a bunker by the sea. Their reason was simple and one that is an issue in Malta too - sunlight, or rather, too much of it. ‘Living next to the sea means you can’t get away from the sun, so we wanted a darker area to retreat to,’ says Kobus. And the final result is a case of complement rather than clash. ‘The two areas of our house blend, and it’s the aviary that marries them – it literally joins the two houses and styles.’

Top left, downstairs living room: injections of colour warm up the cool white walls. Top right, a statuesque lamp and chair by Mid-Century Swedish designer Hans J Wegner encapsulate the couple’s love of a modern seaside interior

Kitchen: primary orange-hued cupboards and hardworking stainless steel from Euromobil in Italy form the kitchen’s scaffold. The room, an open plan space leading to the dining room, was positioned in full view of the sea. A wall of windows ensure the surrouding trees become part of the interior look

Living room: maximizing sea views, the couple created a lounge area in their dining room where Jemma the Airedale terrier likes to relax. A Morso fireplace from Sweden warms up the space during winter

Dining room: the light and airy dining room has been intensified with pops of colour thanks to lipstick-red Vitra chairs. The large table is recycled French oak and is lit by industrial-style hanging lamps

Bay window: made with untreated Balau, unpainted fibre cement boards and aluminum, ‘as per the aesthetic of modern Australian architecture,’ says Kobus 049

Greg loves birds and this passion has injected a real sense of the couple honouring the natural beauty of the location. ‘I’m crazy about nature, and the aviary was the only way to make me feel like we lived in the heart of it,’ he says. ‘I like the exotic, and what could be more exotic than a pink scarlet ibis and toco toucans essentially living in your home?’ Combining architectural styles has translated into similarly intermingled interior. While the couple has similar tastes that make for complementary design (Greg loves minimalism and Kobus is fond of Scandinavian chic), their love of mixing things up has created a truly characterful space. While they aren’t fond of clutter and ornamentation – ‘it doesn’t work because of the wind,’ says Kobus – they are happy to mix eclectic décor with varied price tags. ‘My philosophy is that if you invest in three big pieces of value, then it’s fine to add in other objects, such as basics from accessible retailers.’ The surrounding landscape dominates, so the garden needed to become an extension of the rugged surrounds – and, in essence, art. ‘In our house, paintings aren’t necessary because we’re surrounded by nature,’ says Kobus, explaining that when creating the outdoor living area, the couple simply worked with what was already there. ‘We used the rocks from the building site as cladding and as part of the concrete deck that wraps around the house.’ For the garden, the approach was simple: trial and error. ‘Here you plant whatever will grow, such as fynbos and olive trees,’ says Kobus. ‘We spent a fortune on bulbs but lost them all overnight to a hungry porcupine.’ While the garden design was unintentional, elements such as the swimming pool were more carefully thought through. Explains Kobus: ‘The dark colour of the raised pool purposefully blends into the mountains beyond.’ It all comes together to create a space that suits its surroundings to a tee. In the shade: the outdoor living and pool area has been given a leafy canopy of Erythrina trees, creating shade for a set of table and chairs 051

hen the Gatt family developed this property, the aim was to create a modern, luxury offering for Gozo. ‘It was my father who began the project together with the help of my brother Bertrand, and myself,’ says Simon Gatt. ‘At that time Bertrand was working with a real estate company and could see that in the near future there would be a demand for high-end properties on Gozo, but that this was something the island lacked. This demand became reality and has resulted in developers investing in these types of properties more than ever.’ Working with architect Annamaria Attard Montalto of p.ARC, the family designed a layout that took full advantage of the sweeping views of Xlendi and its surrounding countryside, especially from the terrace that is also a prime spot for enjoying the splendid sunsets. ‘Xlendi has one of the best sunsets in all of Malta,’ says Simon. pool, an exterior living room with plenty of room for loungers and a deck area on which to relax. As well, the apertures leading out to the terrace are floor-to-ceiling glass for great views even when indoors. The project took about three years to complete. The 1960s villa that was there before was demolished, exposing the sloping site that has allowed for views to be incorporated in the back as well as front of the building. ‘We wanted lots of light and outside space to take advantage of the view,’ says Simon. ‘So we used a lot of glass and large windows that make the most of the surroundings.’ The building is clad partly in Maltese stone so its sits comfortably in its surroundings and inside is a neutral palette with lots of white. ‘It is restful for the eyes as well as relaxing,’ says Simon. As the property was going to be for rent, neutrals also allowed future tenants to easily add their personal 055

touch to the property. The interior of the house was designed by Simon’s wife Janina, who incorporated mix of classic, rustic and modern contemporary features and furnishings. The current residents are Claire and Mark Lloyd, originally from north-east England, who fell in love with Gozo when they first visited and moved over permanently last year. ‘We were attracted to the quiet pace of life here,’ says Claire. ‘Also, my husband has a boat and the seas are just beautiful.’ This property caught their eye for its contemporary ambience and its outside space. Having settled in at the beginning of winter, they are now thoroughly enjoying the warmer weather. ‘It is very free-flowing between the inside and outside,’ says Claire. ‘But we do spend a lot of our time on the terrace. It’s so comfortable and we have such a fabulous view.’

Top, lush planting: the mass of tall planting not only creates a tropical vibe but also provides natural shade for the interior space Abwove, alfresco dining: the outdoor dining area is conveniently located near the kitchen. Low level hedging adds soothing green without taking away the view

he view from this roof terrace is stunning during the day, the blue of the harbour and beyond, the honey-coloured stone of Valletta glowing in the sunshine; at night, when the lights twinkle and the fortifications are lit, it is simply magical. With such a splendid vista, it made sense to create a living space at roof level in which to fully enjoy it, which is what the homeowners of this Art Nouveau villa did, renovating the inside of the top floor and also the outside space that wraps around three of its sides. The design is down to Alberto Miceli-Farrugia and his team at Openworkstudio. First the inside was transformed into a superbly stylish and comfortable living room and kitchen providing for family living and evening entertainment. ‘It’s a landscape in its own right,’ explains Alberto. ‘The dark green resin floor into which pieces of lighter shades of marble have been set resembles a shallow pond, with the marble pieces as reflections of light off the water. The beige surrounding steps that lead onto the terrace form the calmer shoreline. The chairs are placed within the space like stepping stones.’ The living room is set within green surroundings. While indoor plants punctuate the interior and draw the garden in, a cleverly placed mirrored wall reflects the lush planting out on the terrace into the space. ‘When you reach roof level, you walk through greenery on either side of you,’ says Alberto. Outside, the terrace has been zoned into a series of outdoor rooms, with shallow steps creating a sense of moving from one space to another. Dense planting in pockets gives a lush, almost tropical feel with wide leaved plants filtering daylight into the interior. 061

The Outdoor Room Your roof terrace does not need to be large to be a great space to relax. Here are a few tips into making it an outdoor room...

Book nook: below the main living room is this smaller one that is a quiet place for reading and relaxing

For design ideas, don’t think gardening, think interior design. Plan your space like you would a living room so outdoor sofas and armchairs rather than simply deckchairs. If your terrace isn’t large, check out interior small spaces ideas and adapt them Decide on a theme and stick to it particularly important in a small space. Bright colours do make a space look smaller, or go neutral with splashes of colour if you want your space to feel larger than it is If you want an open-plan inside/outside feel, then the look of the outside needs to be similar to that of the inside Invest in good quality flooring such as decking or paving that will last and give you a solid base on which to work

Just outside the glass doors is the dining area, conveniently located near the kitchen. A walk along the terrace leads to the outside living room, a fabulous space with a large seating area that’s shaded by beige canvas, the pale colour not only reflecting the light and heat but also ensuring that the space feels airy. On a lower level just adjacent to this, is a more compact outdoor sitting space which is a place for quiet reading. Key to the relaxing feel of the terrace is the view, but also the planting. ‘The challenge was to make it feel lusciously green without detracting from the view,’ says Alberto. This has been achieved with planting done thickly and at different levels. ‘We selected a range of wide-leaved plants and fan species to get the sense of undergrowth, along with differing heights of flowering plants,’ says Alberto. It all works beautifully, creating a real sense of escape from the hustle and bustle below.

Include shade - better than an umbrella is an awning or canvas roof that covers the entire area and gives you a ‘ceiling’ Don’t forget about lighting as you want your space to feel comfortable and safe when it is dark - illuminate steps and have lights that create ambient lighting Add outdoor accessories such as outdoor cushions and rugs, and lamps, but also potted plants that will add a lovely shot of nature

EATING OUT

Today, the outside area of a home has never been more important. The desire to connect with nature and the elements as an antidote to our increasingly digital and fast-paced lives has seen gardens and terraces become far more than just a space to sit outside with a glass of wine. Eating outdoors has now gone beyond the stand alone barbecue - the outdoor kitchen with all mod cons is now the ultimate alfresco cooking option... Words: Lisa Borain

Bachelor pad outdoor kitchen by (X, Y, Z) Architecture & Design

This outdoor kitchen is divided from the indoor kitchen by a sliding glass door, enabling elements such as the fridge to be shared. Cut-offs from the ipe decking in the 125-square metre terrace have been used for the cabinetry, which contrasts boldly against the brushed black granite worktop and steel substructure. The four metre workspace holds a gas barbecue, stainless-steel basin with a pull-out shower tap, and another built-in lidded insulated basin with a drain for chilling water, beer and wine in ice ready for entertaining. The client uses this kitchen on a daily basis for around nine months of the year, cooking dinner on the barbecue whilst watching the sunset. To clean, simply clear up and hose it all off

Along with outdoor furniture that is on par with indoor sofas and tables in terms of style and comfort, cooking al fresco has also become more sophisticated. The outdoor kitchen is now a highly desirable feature and comes equipped with almost everything you would have in an indoor one - prep space, a cooking area, tap and basin, storage facilities and even a refrigerator. So how do you go about installing one? Here’s what you need to know...

066

THE SITE Most outdoor kitchens are placed near the interior kitchen for practical reasons - it’s where the utility connections are situated. Unless you plan to incorporate a refrigerator into the design, it also makes it easier to transport food from the house. If, however, it needs to be some distance away, because you want it to be nearer the pool for instance, then a structure such as a pavilion is often the answer and it also has the added advantage of giving you protection from the elements. As with an indoor one, when planning an outdoor kitchen, do think about how you’re going to use it. If you’re planning on large-scale entertaining, then you will need space in which to do it comfortably - opt for a good-sized cooking area and plenty of workspace. Keep in mind that when dealing with a potentially hazardous medium such as a grill or pizza stove, you need to be able to move effortlessly from area to area. At the same time, don’t cut the chef off from the rest of your entertaining area - people involuntarily gravitate towards the cook so have them connected to the outside space but at a respectable distance to limit the potential for dangerous mishaps.

PLANNING

Communal outdoor kitchen [in progress] by Alan Galea at MODEL, in conjunction with Andrea Vassallo Cesareo at CVC Architecture Within the communal garden area of a block of apartments, this outdoor kitchen which is at planning stage, will be space-saving but at the same time provide plenty of work surface, and also be low maintenance. Next to a limestone wall, a shadow-gapped shutter raw concrete wall will contain the required services such as water supply, sockets and light fittings. The concrete worktop will incorporate a built-in wood-burning barbecue by way of a screen mesh grill which sits flush with the surface. A drawer fridge will save spaces while cool essential cooking items and drinks. The compact outdoor kitchen will sit on a floating shelf, which not only looks good but allows for easy cleaning beneath it and will also keep the cabinetry dry in the wet winter months. Ipe wood cabinetry will be built around the floating shelf. Lighting will includes bare bulbs over the food prep, cooking and basin areas.

SHADE Considering shade is absolutely paramount in Malta’s hot summers; also think about protecting the area from the wind. It may seem obvious, but don’t install anything flammable over the grill area, and that it’s well ventilated. LIGHTING Task lighting is key in an outdoor kitchen as you need to be able to see what you’re doing when the sun goes down. Lights that illuminate the work surface and cooking are a must - options

include recessed spot lights or adjustable lights that can be aimed where they are needed. MATERIALS These need to be durable, weatherproof, resistant to heat as well as resistant to heating up plus simple to clean. Hard-wearing timber (such as teak, cedar or ipe), natural stone, and also stainless steel are popular options. Also consider how the materials react in strong sunlight and heat - you don’t want to build your outdoor kitchen out of a material that’s too hot to touch. 067

Shelving has the capacity to add warmth and interest to a room. Here’s how...

‘I’ve seen many cases where the aim was a lovely library but most of the shelves ended up being empty - and eventually full of dust too!’

Open-plan shelves are a major trend and good shelving can certainly make a room. ‘It is a great way of creating an interesting backdrop, and because it is functional as well, it is more interesting than wallpaper or a painted wall,’ says architect Bernard Vella. Adds Steven Risiott from A Collective: ‘People like to personalise their space as much as possible and open-plan shelves allow the user to be more creative in their own home.’ However, you need to think carefully before you start. ‘Shelves should be designed according to the user and their belongings,’ says Bernard. ‘I’ve seen many cases where the aim was a lovely library but

most of the shelves ended up being empty - and eventually full of dust too!’ The starting point is determining what it is going to be used for as this will decide the depth and height. ‘If it’s shelving in an office, for example, we ensure it’s able to accommodate box files,’ says Steven. In a pantry, ‘you do not want it to be more than 20cm in depth because otherwise you will forget what you placed behind the front row,’ says Bernard. ‘Book shelves, on the other hand, can be anything between 20cm and 40cm deep depending on the books.’ If you’re going for a wall of storage Steven advises keeping things simple. ‘You want a minimal design so there is not

White shelving by Bernard Vella The clients had a wide opening between the entrance room of their apartment which is also a sitting / reading room, and the living room and wanted something that was visually interesting and offered storage space but did not break up the connection between the two rooms and the rest of the open-plan space. I designed a piece that eliminated the wall and instead became an insertion in the open plan area. It gave the living space more of an identity and was something that my clients could relate to by the way they use it. The wall is clad in American walnut panels from floor to ceiling on both sides and therefore perceived as one element when viewed from either side. The shelving, therefore, has its own identity in the space. The shelves, made from sprayed mdf, vary both in width and in vertical space between shelves. There’s a lot of visual play happening here, in the colour and also the varying proportions both in terms of timber thicknesses and in the spaces between the shelves. Photograph: Ramon Portelli

LIVING too much going on,’ he says. ‘You don’t want it to look too busy and take away from the objects on the shelving.’ Including some closed storage is also a good idea as this allows clutter to be hidden away, leaving just the right amount of open shelving for the items you want to see. When putting shelving, one option is going bespoke as it allows you to tailor the shelving to your exact needs. ‘And it makes it possible to tuck shelves into small and

unusual spaces or alcoves,’ says Bernard. If choosing ready-made, do think about the weight the shelves will carry, and therefore how they need to be attached to the wall. Also consider materials and colour. Shelving almost the same colour as the wall behind it will blend into the background while a contrasting colour will stand out, making the shelving a major part of the design. Metal can add an industrial mood that also adds a cool graphic element. Timber shelving by A Collective Made from oak and MDF sprayed a dark grey this shelving unit (far left) is located between the kitchen and dining area. It was designed as an extension of the dining bench to integrate closed storage and a number of shelves for recipe books, wines and spirits. The composition of open and closed storage gives purpose to the adjacent structural pilaster [rectangular column] that was clad in oak. The shelving outer carcass was manufactured in oak to serve as a soft threshold between the dark grey shelves and the light coloured walls and ceiling. A pushto-open drawer underneath the ‘bench shelf’ balances out the overall composition. As this shelving (left) is part of a kitchen, the proportions of the compartments were configured to house recipe books, plants/herbs, spirits and wines. A recessed shadow gap between the walnut containers adds perspective and depth, thus allowing the shelving to blend in seamlessly with the adjacent relieved panelling. Photograph: Alex Attard

Steel and timber shelving by A Collective The aim of this design that’s a mix of powder-coated steel sections and walnut shelves was for the shelving above the TV to seem as light as possible. In order to achieve this feeling of lightness we used slim steel sections welded together to follow a similar staggered pattern to the storage in the kitchen. The walnut shelves may be moved, allowing the shelving unit to be customised , as well as allow for the storage/ display of higher items if required. Photograph: Ramon Portelli

A

n avid yoga practitioner and fond Zen philosophy follower, our client’s brief was to transform her existing barren terrace into a relaxing therapeutic haven where she could practise yoga and enjoy the countryside’s stunning views. Our approach was to treat the terrace as a proper garden, transitioning as seamlessly as possible from inside the house to the outside terrace. We wanted to achieve a feeling of serenity, carrying the palette of the interiors out onto the exterior materials and give a progression of views from the bedroom to the terrace and the countryside beyond, as though they all belonged in one harmonious picture frame. We used Zen principles of minimalism and garden design to inform and inspire us - a moss-covered mound, a focal bonsai, meandering paths, raked gravel and materials in their natural state. We then extrapolated these basic principles of Japanese garden design and adapted them to fit the constraints of the terrace and shallow planting bed, the exposure to strong winds and the need to utilise low-maintenance plants which would withstand our strong Mediterranean sun.

Natural teak decking, local stone and a variety of hardy succulents were used to create this unique Zen-inspired garden capable of withstanding full exposure to the elements

In our concept design we divided the terrace into areas - for yoga, for the mound and feature tree, for reading and relaxing, and finally one dedicated to a water feature and Buddha sculpture. We tried to simplify the architecture of the parapet walls by creating seating nooks in the existing recessed spaces, incorporating them into the overall design. A dwarf Pinus Pinea, an evergreen conifer with a round-topped shape and dark green needles, was fitted in the mound and around it planted Thymus Ciliatus, a low-ground-covering type of thyme, which in spring has heads of soft pink flowers. The mound was built on a structure of custom-shaped styrofoam and special heavy soil. The whole garden is elevated one step up from the floor level inside the house to allow the succulents to be planted within the gravel bed thus accentuating the impression of a real garden. The resulting flowing forms of the green mounds define the walking areas and create, despite the restricted space, the look of meandering paths that the client was keen on.

Natural teak decking was used as a unifying element to transition the flooring from inside to the outside terrace, as well as to retain the stepped up gravel bed, the built-in seats and the yoga platform. Maltese hardstone was custom ground to pea-gravel size to allow for raking, and local flagstone pavers were chosen for the path, both with their creamy hues seamlessly extending the palette from the carpet inside on to the terrace beyond. A mix of Aloes and Echeverias have been selected for their hardiness and shallow root requirements. As the seasons change, they embellish the garden with a succession of pretty blooms and colourful foliage. The Buddha sculpture was given a special prominence in his peninsula of Sedum palmeri and Echeveria ‘ruffles’, and with the sound of the circulating water and soft glowing light in its base, it exudes peace and serenity at the end of the day when the client, back home from work, prepares for her daily yoga and meditation routine.

PLANNING Planning the design and creating a materials list beforehand is critical. Designers Eliza Costabel and Melina Scodanibbio used the confines of the terrace walls and existing architectural forms to their advantage to incorporate the seating areas, and for the backdrop wall of the Buddha statue. Despite the lack of space, they were keen to incorporate elements of Japanese garden design such as meandering paths, raked gravel and minute attention to detail in the positioning and selection of the plant material as well as the decorative elements

Prawn skewers WITH BAKED SWEET POTATO , AVOCADO CREAM CHEESE AND CORN SALSA ‘Quick to cook and packed with flavour from the lime and chilli, these prawns just taste great. For a taste twist, instead of the humble jacket potato, use sweet potato, topped with fresh avocado cream and corn salsa.’

INGREDIENTS 32 small prawns, peeled, tail on 8 wooden or metal skewers 1 red chilli, sliced 20g coriander, chopped 1 lime, juiced 2 tbsp olive oil Salt and pepper 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped

4 whole sweet potatoes 100g cream cheese 1 avocado, peeled and diced 100g sweetcorn 2 tomatoes, diced 1 red onion, finely chopped 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar cress

METHOD In a mixing bowl, add the prawns, sliced red chilli, half of the chopped coriander, almost all of the lime juice, salt and pepper, 1 tbsp of olive oil and some of chopped garlic. Mix well. Place 4 prawns on each skewer. Wash the sweet potato and using a fork stab it in different places (to allow the steam to escape), then lightly coat it with oil and rock salt. Bake in the oven for 40 minutes at 180°C. You will know that it is cooked as it will be very soft to the touch. In a mixing bowl, add the cream cheese and diced avocado with the remaining lime juice to avoid the avocado from discolouring and mix well, mashing the avocado a bit.

In a small mixing bowl, add the corn, tomatoes, chopped garlic, remaining chopped coriander, chopped red onion, apple cider vinegar and remaining olive oil and mix well. Taste for seasoning and adjust. On a very hot grill place the prawn skewers for 1 minute, turning and cooking for a further minute. Do not overcook, as the prawns will keep on cooking and become tough and chewy. Warm the already cooked sweet potato in the oven - or if at a barbecue, in foil on the grill for 10 minutes - and make a cross on top, squashing the sides to open up the potato. Top up the sweet potato with the avocado cream cheese and corn salsa. Serve.

Grilled pineapple WITH NUTELLA, HAZELNUTS AND MASCARPONE CHEESE ‘This is a great way to finish your barbecue - a quick and easy dessert with beautifully caramelised pineapple from the grill, creamy mascarpone cheese, nutty Nutella and hazelnuts, and for the brave, chilli jam for a bit of kick! All of these ingredients complement each other to make for an awesome dessert.’

INGREDIENTS 1 small tub mascarpone cheese 1 whole pineapple, cored and cut into slightly thick slices 100g roasted hazelnuts, crushed Nutella, slightly warmed up Sweet chilli jam (optional)

110

METHOD Place the pineapple on a very hot grill and let it grill for 5 minutes to achieve caramelisation. Then turn over and cook for a further 5 minutes. Place the grilled pineapple on a plate. In the hole of the pineapple place a small scoop of mascarpone cheese and drizzle with the warmed Nutella and roasted hazelnuts. If you wish to add a kick, drizzle on some chilli jam. To make chilli jam, add sliced fresh chilli (to taste) to any jam and blend well.

Quinoa summer salad

‘A great way to start a summer BBQ, this healthy and refreshing salad has fruity overtones and crunchy nutty pistachios.’ INGREDIENTS 300g quinoa

(cooked as per packet instructions)

200g mixed lettuce leaves 1 mango, peeled and diced Half watermelon (peeled and diced)

VINAIGRETTE: 2 tbsp olive oil 1 tsp lime juice 1 tsp apple cider vinegar 1 tsp honey Pinch salt, sugar and sugar

50g pistachios 25g pomegranate seeds 12 cherry tomatoes, (washed and halved)

Olive oil Salt and pepper 1 lime, juiced METHOD Cook the quinoa as per packet instructions, adding salt, pepper, olive oil and the juice of 1 lime to give it extra flavour. Cool, strain to remove the excess water and rinse lightly. Set aside. In a bowl, toss the mixed lettuce leaves with some olive oil, salt and pepper. In a separate bowl, mix the quinoa and watermelon. In a large salad bowl put in the mixed salad leaves and then spoon the quinoa and watermelon mix into the middle. Top up the salad with the cherry tomatoes, pomegranate seeds, pistachios and diced mangos. To make the vinaigrette, mix all the ingredients together well, then pour over the salad when you’re ready to serve.

GEORGES' WINE RECOMMENDATIONS: PRAWN SKEWERS WITH BAKED SWEET POTATO, AVOCADO CREAM CHEESE AND CORN SALSA (page 109) QUINOA SUMMER SALAD (above)

2017 PJAZZA REGINA ROSÉ, I.G.T. MALTESE ISLANDS If you’re only having salad, go for this lip-smacking rosé. There’s lime juice, sweet honey and a whole fruit bowl in your salad to take on! Filled with an exuberant blast of red summer fruits and freshness, this wine is up to the task. Its fullness envelopes the slightly nuttiness and distinctive texture of the quinoa well. This vintage is veganfriendly, by the way.

2017 GRAND VIN DE HAUTEVILLE CHARDONNAY, D.O.K. MALTA, SUPERIOR Any of the two pink wine suggestions would match-up well, too. But this slightly oaky, delicate and gallant bottle of Chardonnay bridges the sweet corn and potato aside with the grilled prawns perfectly. It’s a must-try if you like to heighten the tropical flavours of the dish and the wine. And, best of all, this glass goes well with that nutty bite of the quinoa salad, too.

GRILLED PINEAPPLE (left)

N.V. GELLEWZA FRIZZANTE, I.G.T. MALTESE ISLANDS Bringing out yet another wine for afters might seem overindulgence. But this semi-sparkling, off-dry Maltese corker will make your party. The grilling and the hazelnut flavours unify the dessert and wine and showcase the wonderful strawberry, cashew-nut characteristics of Malta’s finest Frizzante. This zippy, refreshing pink offers the perfect foil for long after-grilling fun.

B

eyond its walls may be centuries old history but the SU29 Hotel situated on Saint Ursula Steps in Valletta is resolutely and beautifully modern. Although situated in a 150-year-old building, the boutique hotel is very much designed for the 21st century traveller with a stylish mix of contemporary furniture and fittings. The renovation of the hotel was done by Studio Moda who also co-own the hotel. Here, Matthew Borg of Studio Moda explains what they did... What was your aim? To create individually designed suites enriched with the character of the local culture and inspired by the lifestyle of the modern luxury traveller. To do this we had to change and transform the property, taking it from rags to riches. The main building consisted of five floors; a metal and glass contemporary dual annexe was later approved for the top floors and this annexe was a turning point as it allowed us to combine the past with today’s engineering capabilities and contemporary architecture to create something that would last into the future. As the building has a limited width and narrow hallway, the annexe also gave us the space to create eight large, luxury suites, most of which have more than 45 square meters of floor space, along with all the facilities required for a luxury boutique hotel. How did you divide up the space? The ground floor and intermediate spaces are where you find the reception, lounge and breakfast areas. Although we had to work with a narrow site that was extremely challenging - the entrance is a mere four feet - the double height of these floors enabled us to create spaces that don’t feel small.

Top row: Luxury loft, Above left: Junior suite bathroom, Above middle and right: Presidential suite

We restored and preserved the main original features such as the structural stone arches and flagstone ceilings and combined them with luxurious materials such as an onyx marble which can be found, back-lit, in the reception which also acts as a bar. We also installed wrought iron French doors, a framed triple volume glass window that overlooks a small courtyard and a raw metal bridge that leads to a parquet lounge area. It took us about 11 months to renovate the building and among the many challenges was its location - everything from construction materials to furniture had delivered and installed by hand. What colour palette and materials were chosen? The hotel features white washed walls with yellow feature walls, black ceilings and also black walls. Black signifies the dark past that the residence lived through to yellow, a colourful shade that marks the building’s joyous and exuberant revival. The materials we chose had to fit with the original architecture but also befit a modern, luxury hotel - we opted for Callacata and Nero Marquina marbles, carved Carrara sinks and shower trays, micro-topping wall treatments, black stained oak and walnut bespoke woodwork and Valletta-themed frosted glazing. Soft

furnishings along with warm lighting also give a relaxing and luxurious mood. We also added a selection of kitsch designer pieces to give the hotel a design edge but also luxury and a warm ambience. Tell us about the suites... Each one has its own theme, characters and facilities that makes it - and the hotel – special and a true boutique residence. The Fitness suite was originally going to have a gym corner, but we made it more interesting and unique by including a punching bag, yoga mat and gym accessories. Then there’s the Classic Maltese suite which as well as modern pieces retains the original wooden ‘Maltese Gallaria’, wooden beams and flag-stone ceiling which, with a multi-coloured glass partition and Maltese furniture, create a typical Maltese ambience. Recently we launched the Charles and Ron suite in partnership with C&R fashion brand. This collaboration features an array of luxurious C&R soft furnishings and design pieces . The President’s Suite is all about luxury and supercomfortable furniture pieces such as the Neoz Sofa by Philippe Starck and a sense of space and airiness. It’s an interior that’s offers the traveller a home-away-from-home rather than a hotel room. www.su29hotel.com
