Begin by thinking about how you would like your outdoor dining space to function. Will it mostly be used for casual evenings with friends? Sunday lunches with the family? Or will you be entertaining on a bigger scale with big parties and barbecues? Make a list of the many things you would like to do in the space and use it as a guide to determine what type of dining furniture is necessary. If the primary function of your outdoor area is to host casual evening cocktails, there is no need for a dining table. Add years to the life of your furniture by storing it in a protected location, such as a garage or basement during the off season. Even the toughest furniture, such as teak chairs or a wrought-iron settee, will last longer if it’s placed in storage when not in use. If space is limited, look for dining furniture that folds or is easily taken apart for compact storage.

Take a seat before you buy. Comfortable outdoor lounging furniture, just like interior furniture, will be used regularly, as opposed to uninviting outdoor furniture, which might look good, but may not be so comfortable. With lounging furniture, you can add colourful accessories and accent pieces, which contrast really well outside. Look for dual-purpose pieces that work hard for you. For instance 足足 an ottoman that doubles as extra seating for your next outdoor party, or a simple bench that will stand alone or cosy up to an al fresco dining table are helpful for frequently used outdoor spaces.

The sun lounger is used for a multitude of things other than one-person sunbathing. It can be used as a chaise longue for reading underneath an umbrella, as a multiseater for children when they take a break from play, or simply as a place to take a nap. Quality really is key with sun loungers if you want to reserve the bulk of your outdoor hours enjoying the space as opposed to maintaining furniture. Most metal, teak, and all-weather wicker pieces are unfazed by whatever nature throws their way. Furniture made using these forgiving materials will look good for years. Teak is strong, classic and elegant. The wood tends to be heavy so it’s more suited for those who don’t need to move it often. It does require some maintenance re-staining and re-oiling. During winter, it’s much better to keep it inside. Metal is also heavy and needs to be preserved in order not to rust. There are metal loungers that are available with outside covers to help preserve the metal. Rattan is comfortable, looks modern, and is quite light, so it can be moved easily. One thing to keep in mind about it is that the material can possibly fade in the sun. 016

LUMINOUS FURNITURE Luminous furniture is a fantastic way to create an ambience while subtly lighting up the outdoors. Here, SLIDE luminous furniture from Brands International
WALKWAY LIGHTS Use path lights to line a walkway to the entry door for flowering beds, or other hard to see areas in the outdoor area for safety and ambiance. With a variety of styles including hat, mushroom and pagoda, find a set to enhance the home’s exterior while making the entry safer. To avoid an airport runway effect, stagger them on either side of the pathway. Solar-powered path lights mean not having to worry about remembering to turn on the lights before leaving the house or turning them off before turning in. 018

FLOODLIGHTS Floodlights help with safety and security when used on a stairway, dark garage or entry area. They help discourage intruders and light the way when you return home after dark. Motion sensors and timers can be added in order to customise when and how lights turn on and off.
SOLAR LANDSCAPE LIGHTING With no wiring or electricity, solar lights can be installed anywhere. They work by using a solar collection panel that absorbs energy from sunlight and converts it into electrical power that’s stored in highly efficient rechargeable batteries. As the sun sets, the solar lights turn on. Ideally, fully charged solar lights will remain on for up to 15 hours. LED solar lights are also now available. These provide brighter, white light, not dim blue light like some LED lights can. All solar-powered lighting requires a sufficient amount of sunlight to recharge the batteries. Their performance is based on the amount of sunlight received during the day, which should be high considering our long and bright summer days.
SPOTLIGHTS Spotlights are great for highlighting trees, shrubs and other visual interests in the garden. This type of lighting will also offer a sense of depth to the landscaping. Look for weathersealed lights to ensure a longer life.
DECK LIGHTS Lighting installed directly into the deck will illuminate stairs, benches and railings, making the deck safer in the evenings. Flush-mounted lights installed in the decking are designed to be walked on without getting damaged. 019

WALL LIGHTS Wall lights work well for driveway and front door lighting - from traditional flood lights to contemporary up/down spotlights for the safety element. Wall lights will also highlight architectural features and make the home look welcoming. ree Source in Siggiewi is home to a variety of different trees imported from Alicante, Spain - olive, palm, pomegranate, fig, and grape vines. It’s a fantastic find because it’s difficult to hunt down such a variety of trees in one place - from a brand new one to an 800 year old one. Prices range greatly - from €5 to €7,000. All the trees are EU certified and cared for at Tree Source to ensure that they are safe from disease - inclusive of the palm tree, which has experienced a devastation with the infestation of the weevil in recent years.
The range of olive trees are impressive with their stature and age, ranging from the ordinary Mediterranean olive tree to the smaller version with its reddish trunk (aka “red bonsai”). This one produces Gethsamane olives, the name originating from the garden at the foot of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, the place where Jesus prayed and his disciples slept the night before Jesus’ crucifixion. How does a construction magnate go to importing olive trees? Carmen Ellul says, “I was tired of the construction business and I wanted to do something completely different. This idea came to me a couple of summers ago. I then brought the trees over in the autumn. I
love being around them. It gives me a great sense of relaxation. They’re alive and they need to be cared for. I like doing that.” The olive trees are from an area in Alicante which is being developed, so Tree Source is purchasing trees that would otherwise be rooted and dumped. It’s not difficult to get a tree. Clients are invited to view the tree range at Tree Source in Siggiewi. Depending on the size of the tree, a contact will then visit the site location to assess delivery requirements, which Tree Source will then carry out.
