Clever spacing is always a focus in kitchen design. Aster Cucine open and slide larder, complete housing an appliance area, a bar and a working area, available from Brands International

T

he major focus of kitchen design right now is smart spaces. Hi-tech makeovers with dedicated spots for smart devices are being created to hide charging stations and to store devices such as phones and tablets so that they are always operable, at hand and charged. The quintessential 2016 kitchen focuses on convenience for families on the go

via accessible smart appliances. Kitchen technology is all about making our lives easier and easier such as sensor-activated lights that illuminate the kitchen only when it’s in use and meat thermometers that alert your smartphone when dinner is cooked. This extends to stateof-the-art appliances too whether that be steam ovens, built-in coffee machines and wine coolers. Integrated kitchen-living spaces have

been a focus for quite some time now, and gone are the days of kitchens feeling disconnected from the rest of the home or less than accommodating cooking spaces. Today, however, kitchens are becoming even more streamlined with hidden and integrated appliances so they merge as seamlessly as possible into the living room area for an openplan space that does not feel overly functional.

A new storage wonder: the new iMove wall unit by Nobilia, available from Oxford House

Designers are doubling up storage in new, custom-made kitchens with clever multi-tiered drawers, as well as shelving in unexpected places. Here, the Blum Servo-Drive is an electrical powered opening support system for drawers, hanging units and pull-outs, with a light touch anywhere on the drawer front. Find it at BDI

Lighting has moved on too. People no longer settle for just ceiling lights and table lamps to illuminate their kitchens. Extensive cabinet lighting, in particular low-voltage light tape strips are being used as accent pieces below cabinets, above cabinets, inside cabinets and below countertop overhangs, with LED lights now the norm. Combined with recessed lights, they offer far more options when creating mood lighting in kitchens.

With kitchen cabinets, not only are the colour options for kitchen cabinets changing, so are the way cabinet doors and drawers function. Today there are hydraulic, easy-close doors that fold up and out of the way with the touch of a button making them perfect for kitchens where space is an issue. Maximum kitchen storage has always been a need, especially for those living in an apartment or houses of character where kitchen space is limited. To

remedy this, designers are doubling up storage in new, custom kitchens with clever multi-tiered drawers, as well as shelving in unexpected places. Designers are also revisiting classical kitchen layouts, such as U-shaped kitchens. Creating a horseshoe kitchen not only maximises space, but also creates a a boundary between the kitchen and dining areas.

Let’s Talk

kitchens! A SELECTION OF MALTA’S LEADING INTERIOR DESIGNERS TALK TO HOMEWORKS ABOUT THE KITCHEN TRENDS IN THE MAKING - AND WHAT THEY WOULD LIKE TO SEE

KEITH PILLOW, DAAA HAUS “Whilst open-plan, minimal, white and organised kitchens should remain very popular, I can’t wait to be given the green light to design a Gourmet Moody Kitchen. As food trends converge with kitchen trends, I hope that the popularity of raw, locally-produced, dark natural kitchens with heavyduty industrial appliances will catch up. My idea of a Gourmet Kitchen would still be minimal and organised, yet by using more natural hardwoods, locally sourced modern-cut hard stone, dark surrounding walls (grey is my favourite, but dark blues, espresso brown or a dark sage green could work) combined with stainless steel industrial appliances I would create a warm moody cooking space for those who treasure cooking.”

PENNY APAP BROWN INTERIOR DESIGN “I’m dreaming of powdery grey, painted islands the colour of storm clouds with chunky, timber tops. I’d love to use recycled metal with oversized rusty rivets on which to hang unusual kitchen tools, such as Japanese scissors. I’m loving the idea of a wall designated to a floorto-ceiling monochrome photo of a significantly happy event. Further, I want to see more design with hidden electrical points on the underside of top cabinets for appliances, and the minimalisation of visible sockets on splash back walls.”

STEFANIA SCHEMBRI INTERIOR DESIGN “Although traditional colour schemes will continue to be popular, the triumphant comeback of the dark decor in the interior design world will doubtlessly impact on the fashion choices of future kitchen colour schemes. I envisage the introduction of colourful combinations between clear and monochrome tones, and the decreased use of wooden doors and cladding. The emblematic material for the season will be concrete – delicate grey surfaces combined with warm caramel wood finishes. This forms a very good argument against the feeling that concrete is too raw and industrial for interior décor. Instead, this combination creates a sensation of style, luxury and warmth.”

MARIA MERCIECA, M+DESIGN “For me it’s mostly about being conscious and going that extra mile with careful and holistic design that enables a healthy family lifestyle along with saving energy and the planet. Elements such as choosing non-toxic materials and finishes such as formaldehyde-free and low-VOC materials are of utmost importance. Design to accommodate organic waste separation and recyclable materials, as well as spaces to make fruit, vegetables and herbs accessible is where I’d like to see it all going.”

ADRIAN MICALLEF, AM DESIGN “Some great ways to enhance the functional kitchen today is not only through the complementary use of texture and colour, but also through the use of clever storage space and technology. Today’s vast availability of technology can transform your kitchen into a liveable space, with pop-up sockets on the kitchen worktop and with sleek, linear appliances. By adding some patterned tiles as a back splash, the kitchen can be given the touch of colour it needs to create fun. This can then be complemented by nice lighting, so that the kitchen can be transformed into something elegant and unique.”

lex Mattei has been synonymous with food-loving for a long time now, and currently spends his days co-running the Galley Restaurant, the industrially chic workman’s’ Fort Cafe, the sandwich and catering company Brown & Rye, the artisanal bakery Da vinci, and last but certainly not least - the upmarket catering company Fifth Flavour. So it’s perhaps safe to say that Alex knows what he wants out of a kitchen. When the moment came for him to decide on a design for his personal home kitchen, he commissioned Violet Kulewska, the interior architectural and furniture designer renowned for her innovative, think-outside-of-the-box clean-lined design. “I had seen some of Violet’s work and got to know that she lived in a similar style building in Valletta,” says Alex. “The challenge was to incorporate old with new; something

modern wouldn’t have worked in my 1950s apartment, yet I needed a functional space. A kitchen is a chef’s workshop and needs to be practical. I looked at some pre-fabricated kitchens, and whilst there were some really lovely ones, none of them would have worked for me specifically - either in terms of style or practicality. I needed higher, larger counters, and ample, as well as accessible storage. My work experience is what made me want this. I decided that what I needed was a custom-built kitchen, designed alongside someone who understood both what I needed and what would work aesthetically.”’ Alex’s initial brief to Violet was to create something industrial. His priority was practicality, and so he assumed that his kitchen would inevitably carry similar aesthetics to that of a catering establishment kitchen. “I knew what was needed for a kitchen to work, but I didn’t

‘I NEEDED HIGHER, LARGER COUNTERS, AND AMPLE, AS WELL AS ACCESSIBLE STORAGE. MY WORK EXPERIENCE IS WHAT MADE ME WANT THIS.’’ quite know how to go about it in terms of choosing the look that would be in harmony with the apartment.” Which is where Violet came in,. This suspended kitchen project was a was a small-scale project, yet a challenging one because while I took note of what Alex wanted, I knew that the industrial look wasn’t going to work,” explains Violet. “My original ideas were marble, stainless steel, and wood - yet, we both realised that these were too harsh for a home. I began to feel that juxtaposing local, vintage details against a clean Scandi design was ideal. Alex wanted to keep the original Maltese tiles, so this was the starting point for the style to evolve. He also wanted a farmhouse sink for its size and practicality, but also for its aesthetic appeal. Eventually, Alex found one in good condition on a local buying and selling website, while I gave him the vintage lamp that I

had found at one of the markets.”’ Apart from this evolving symbiosis of old and new, Violet came up with the notion to suspend a cabinet system to create a spacious and original kitchen concept, but also to expose the Maltese tiles, which are in the centre of the kitchen area. Alex felt that standard kitchen surfaces are too low and too short. He knew that when preparing food, he needed work space at a comfortable height so that he wouldn’t have to bend over for too long. In turn, Violet designed a deeper and above-standard height worktop. She created a layout whereby there are only a couple of metres between the counter and the cooker so that it’s just a matter of the cook turning around to face the cooker. She used birch plywood to build the kitchen units,

which are topped with striking Gris riven slate worktops in order to achieve the light and semi-Scandinavian look. The open shelves can be used as a display, or as a replacement for closed cupboards beneath the countertop. “We live in an era in which almost everything is designed,” says Violet. “These days, I feel like the kitchenware should be displayed, rather than hidden in cupboards.” As a result of the distinct brief and architect-client collaboration, the kitchen has become all about what Alex originally wanted; workspace, accessibility, storage - and a good-looking kitchen. Alex continues to evolve his design: “I’m in the process of designing a large butcher’s block on wheels that can be locked and placed alongside the cooker, or moved about the kitchen as required,” he says. “This will serve as a surface area near the cooker and an area for last minute prep. The block will also have knife storage and shelving beneath it. I haven’t found anything like it on the market so again, I am going to have it made.”’ 029

CHECK LIST HW

®

Kitchen Checklist

WHETHER YOU’RE READY TO RENOVATE YOUR KITCHEN OR DESIGN AN ENTIRELY NEW ONE, STEP-BYSTEP PLANNING IS THE KEY TO CREATING YOUR DREAM KITCHEN. HERE’S A SIMPLE CHECKLIST TO HELP YOU GET STARTED SO THAT YOU’LL BE ON YOUR WAY TO A NEW KITCHEN IN NO TIME Renovating can be encumbering with all the different elements to consider and decisions to be made. However, the outcome is a hugely satisfying experience, from which you will reap the rewards long after you’ve forgotten how difficult the project may have been. Planning is key when undertaking a new kitchen project, and there are some smart and practical groundwork tips that can help you avoid going over budget and over time when creating your kitchen into the space you always wanted it to be. Some renovate their kitchen to help tidy up the home to sell, while others want to add to the comfort, use and value to the home. If you are in the latter category, consider what you want to achieve out of your new kitchen. It could be about better utilisation of the space you already have, catering to specific lifestyle needs such as accommodating a larger family. It could be about adding functionality or integrating the kitchen with other areas of your home. Firming up the main objective of a new kitchen is often only glanced over, but it’s of paramount importance to set clear goals and to communicate this with others involved in the project. Create a mood board so that you can visualise all your design elements together ahead of time. By putting samples of the materials and colours you’re considering using side-by-side, you’ll be able to see how the various design elements of the project come together. Keep this mood board in a prominent place, where you can see it every day, in the lead up to the project to ensure that you’re happy with what you’ve chosen. This will help you let go of any spur of the moment design choices. Try to avoid getting distracted by trends - take what you like but don’t feel you have to abide by them. Don’t underestimate space for appliances. Research your choice of appliances such as oven and cooktop, fridge, dishwasher and microwave ahead of time because their di-mensions will play an important role in the overall layout and finish of the kitchen. Be sure to allow for just the right amount of space to avoid unsightly gaps around appliances and to avoid disappointment when your new fridge doesn’t quite fit in its spot. This happens a lot more than people think. For a more seamless look, integrated appliances can really add that extra special touch to your kitchen, both comfort-wise and aesthetically.

Be realistic about the time frame it will take to create a kitchen - even a best case scenario is around four to six weeks, in which case you still need to be prepared for significant time without a kitchen. Set aside a space in another part of your home to keep your fridge running and be prepared to use your bathroom and laundry sinks more often to do the dishes. If you’re renovating during summer, an outdoor barbecue is the ideal alternative to a cooktop. While it’s very difficult to keep a tight schedule when it comes to renovating your kitchen, it’s important to be mindful of the order in which each renovation step process is carried out. If things are not carried out in the right order, you could wind up waiting for seeming-ly small elements to carry out the larger ones. This is a huge factor in kitchen renovations running over time. At a glance Follow this schedule for an easier and more efficient renovation or installation.

3 TO 6 MONTHS BEFORE… DISCOVER WHAT’S OUT THERE

Gather magazines and books, visit websites and showrooms to start a mood board of what you like and where you might find it.

THINK ABOUT WHAT WORKS – AND WHAT DOESN’T

Try to take a fresh look at the kitchen you have now. What do you love about it, and what are the parts that you could really do without? How much time do you spend there? Does the room require more space in certain areas? More high-tech appliances? These answers will help guide you to a more customised plan.

031

Kitchen Check list.indd 31

21/03/2016 8:17 AM

HW CHECK LIST Consider the following: - Unless you’re a cook who knows exactly what you need and want, use the kitchen “work triangle” to design how your kitchen works. This is the distance between your cooking surface, fridge and sink. Ideally, each leg of the triangle should measure between 1.2 metres and 2.7 metres for optimal flow. If your kitchen is too large to stick to this rule, then at least make sure that the legs of the triangle aren’t interrupted by furniture or traffic. - If your kitchen space is large, consider building an island or a peninsula which can double as a workstation and a casual dining/seating area. They can also act as dividers between rooms, and a peninsula connecting your kitchen to a family room will give the entire space an open, airy flow, and is great for entertaining guests. - Once you figure out where you’ll be working the most, think about equipping each task area with good lighting, proper appliances and power outlets. - Leave nothing out - assign space for appliances, fixtures, cabinetry and furnishings.

CREATE A BUDGET

Be realistic about what you can afford. Then think about where you can save money and also where you will need to invest more to make your kitchen work for you. Always keep a 10 percent contingency within your budget to cover unforeseen aspects and to avoid surprises.

DETERMINE WHETHER YOU NEED HELP OR NOT

If you’re thinking about hiring a professional designer, start looking into it at this stage. Don’t sit on it - begin researching the best designer for you.

3 TO 6 WEEKS BEFORE… START THINKING ABOUT STYLE

By considering and choosing your desired style ahead of time, you’ll have enough time at this stage to choose alternatives if you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for.

DECIDE ON START DATE

Once you confirm major details such as the floor plan and smaller ones such as added storage and lighting, commit to a start date.

A-Z Kitchen Tools Checklist

Once you’ve created your dream kitchen, stock it with these basics to make cooking easier and faster.

Can opener Chef’s knife Corkscrew Garlic press Grater Instant-read thermometer Kitchen shears Ladle Lemon press Locking tongs Measuring cups Measuring spoons Metal spatula Microplane grater Paring knife Peppermill Potato masher Rubber spatula Salad spinner Serrated bread knife Slotted spoon Timer Whisk Wire mesh colanders Y-shaped vegetable peeler

DAYS BEFORE AND DURING... MAKE WAY

If you have the opportunity, make arrangements to live elsewhere until construction is complete. If you don’t have that luxury, store away anything that will be in the way. Box, label, and store your kitchen items in a temporary cooking/clean-up area.

KNOW YOUR PLAN

Large and small decisions are going to pop up along the way. Make sure you’ve done your homework thoroughly so that you’re confident in your choices. This will help you handle any crisis that may materialise.

HELP OR NO HELP? IF YOU’RE NOT SURE WHETHER YOU NEED THE HELP OF A PROFESSIONAL DESIGNER, CONSIDER HIRING ONE IF:

1. You’re overwhelmed with options. A good designer will help you sort through the choices, and help you narrow your focus. 2. Your ideas seem too big. If structural changes are coming into your ideas, get help. 3. You’re renovating an old home. Older kitchens often require specific structural or design advice that you may not be aware of.

CREATE YOUR OWN STYLE Always take the time to define your personal style. The sky’s the limit when it comes to choosing a new look kitchen but there are some basic tips to keep in mind, whatever you choose… • Begin with the cabinets as they are often the main source of colour in kitchens. Select the cabinets first and your chosen shade can help define the overall look either by dialling up the intensity of the room or by being a neutral backdrop to bright accessories. • Integrated appliances are all the rage for good reasons. They offer a

cohesive, built-in look to kitchens with hidden controls, one-piece doors, customised hardware and trim options. • Good design never dates so when in doubt or looking for inspiration that can’t be found in a modern kitchen, turn back the clock and look to different eras for features that will make your kitchen look different and stand out from the crowd. • You can never have too much kitchen space - create more by eliminating extra cabinets. Consider a built-in pantry or open shelves, both of which are strong current trends, instead.

• One of the best ways to add personality to a kitchen is with a backsplash – think painted tiles, stainless steel, or glass mosaics. • The best accessory in any kitchen is light. Make the most of natural light by installing sheer window treatments and don’t skimp on overhead lighting. Task lighting brings warmth and functionality to dark corners. Finally, remember that a good kitchen is the hub of the home so keep it looking and feeling full of life whether it’s with fresh flowers, seasonal fruits, vegetables or herbs.

CABINETRY Kitchen cabinet trends and materials have not changed as much as other areas around the kitchen, but a few notable trends have developed over the past couple of years. Since so many kitchens are now part of a larger open-plan space, choosing cabinet styles, colours and functions that fit with the overall look of the home is becoming increasingly popular. Today many people are passing over custom cabinets in favour of more affordable, yet design-friendly, semicustom made cabinets. The dominant other trend in kitchen cabinetry is still a clean-lined subtle design that ensures long-term design flexibility. Shaker-style cabinets have made a huge comeback over the past couple of years and although the plain, square design may seem classical and a little plain, a lot of attractive designs have been developed

based on it. It is particularly popular with solid wood as with its unfussy design, it lets the natural beauty of the wood come through. In terms of colour, white and neutral shades - particularly grey - are strong. Refined neutrals and earthy tones tend to work well with a variety of design elements since these colours not only provide a sense of warmth, but also allow for the design freedom to add vibrant colours elsewhere, providing a seamless blend throughout the home. Monochrome kitchens have made an appearance this year. They offset the clean-lined look well and can also create a balance between rustic, modern and transitional kitchens. A focus on storage, organisation and access continues to be a major consideration with every corner of the kitchen used to maximum effect, along with new ways to give better access to hard-to-reach corners. Installing

toe-kick drawers beneath lower cabinets, adding extra drawers above upper cabinets, and installing pull-out shelving and Lazy Susans in corner cabinetry have all become the norm. Square and vertical rectangle shapes are still the preferred designs for kitchen cabinets, although there is a rise in horizontal cabinetry. As cabinets get wider, there is less of a need to stack them if there is enough storage. This not only makes access much easier, but gives the kitchen a cleaner, more refined look. Adding drawer inserts to declutter pots, pans and other kitchen utensils helps with further organisation. Kitchen designers are responding to the demand for constant connection to the outside world with a technological perspective being added to kitchen cabinets by way of built-in charging stations, hands-free functionality and tablet holders. 037

2 Make a statement and keep the kitchen looking immaculate with stunning stand-alone cabinetry. A subtle pattern adds extra interest to the kitchen and plays down its functionality. Here, SCIC kitchen from Satariano

4 The Essentia kitchen, exclusively imported from Italy by Distinct Homes, brings together a sleek modern design with a timeless old wood feel. Open-shelving is a strong trend and as can be seen in this kitchen, gives the space a more open feel, as well as creating the perfect place for displaying beautiful kitchenware.

CABINETRY MATERIALS Kitchen cabinets are made from a wide range of materials including wood, laminate, stainless steel, thermofoil, melamine, lacquer and acrylic. Each option has its own advantages and disadvantages, but it’s really a personal choice depending on your lifestyle and tastes. At first glance, solid wood offers natural beauty and a more classical look, while manmade materials have an endless range of colours and a more contemporary style. Today it’s also possible to combine more than one material or include the same material in two different finishes or colours.

Solid wood offers a sturdy construction, as well as a look and feel of affluence and elegance. However, solid wood is generally more expensive than other types of cabinetry. Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) is made by combining wood fibres with wax and resin. The mixture is then subjected to high heat and pressure to form panels which are denser than plywood. The appearance of MDF is more uniform than natural wood since there are no knots or rings. Also, this material is less expensive than solid wood, making it a popular choice for the construction of kitchen cabinets. The downside to MDF is that it will warp

or bend under certain conditions, such as excessive weight, or high humidity environments. Another disadvantage is that during construction, such as cutting or sawing, urea formaldehyde, a substance contained within the product, can be released into the air, and can cause irritation to the eyes and lungs. Particle Board is an engineered wood composite material made of a combination of wood particles, wood chips, sawmill shavings, and sometimes sawdust. A binder such as a synthetic resin is used to cause these components to stick together under pressure and extrusion. This product is often accompanied by wood veneer

surfaces which create a more attractive appearance. Particle Board is a relatively inexpensive kitchen cabinet construction material and is denser than plywood and even denser than solid wood. This construction product can be painted to provide a wide variety of appearances. The significant disadvantage of particle board is that it interacts unfavourably to moisture, which makes it less than ideal for kitchens. If exposed to excessive moisture particle board will discolour, expand, and become warped or misshapen. While these effects can be minimised if a sealant or paint is used, moisture conditions must be given consideration when using

particle board for kitchen cabinets. Other types of kitchen cabinet materials include glass, melamine, and stainless steel. Glass cabinets offers luminescence by reflecting natural light. Melamine can be painted in any desired colour and is relatively inexpensive, but it scratches easily. While presenting a somewhat cold look, stainless steel can look impressive. Cabinets are usually made by fixing a layer of stainless steel over an MDF base to achieve the desired structural stability. Beyond the actual construction materials used in kitchen cabinetry, there are also a wide variety of finishing choices. Wood cabinets can

be distressed to create an aged, oldworld look or finished with shellac, lacquer, varnish or polyurethane in order to allow the natural grains to be seen. Additional finishes on kitchen cabinets might include paint applied in a variety of ways such as brushed or sprayed on to create different appearances. Also, paint choices include high gloss, semi-gloss or satin. The process of selecting kitchen cabinets is one that requires time, effort and considerable research. However, the choice should be made not just by price, style, durability, or availability, but by your personal preference. 039

WORKTOPS When it comes to kitchen worktops there are a number of options to choose from which can be confusing. A good starting point is to keep functionality and style as your priority. Owen Farrugia, Sales Manager at Halmann Vella brings HOMEWORKS his top tips on different types of kitchen tops to help customers find a surface that’s right for their lifestyle and budget. “Think about how you will use your kitchen top,” he says. Will you be using the kitchen top for chopping? Do you have young children who enjoy making a mess in the kitchen? Or will you use the surface just for entertainment purposes? These factors should influence your decision, as they have an impact on how durable, stain resistant and maintenance-heavy you require your kitchen top to be.

6 The carefully selected natural and sustainable materials speak for themselves with the Contempora kitchen by Aster Cucine, available from Brands International

“The kitchen top should complement the style of your kitchen. How do you want your kitchen to look? Elegant? Warm and traditional? Contemporary? What textures are more appealing to you? The right countertop will help you achieve just the look that you want.” TOP MATERIALS OVERVIEW Quartz: Quartz has become the most popular choice of kitchen top in recent years due to its uniform appearance which goes well with current trends. Extremely hard and durable, it is easy to keep clean and to maintain. Quartz is stain resistant and can take a certain amount of heat. This product can be cleaned with a mild soap, water and a soft cloth. There are also special cleaning products for quartz which makes it easier to remove certain marks. It’s available in

5

a wide range of colours and textures. The price ranges from €200–500 per square metre at Halmann Vella. Granite: Granite kitchen tops resist wear and tear very well. They are highly durable and with proper maintenance can last a lifetime. Granite is also very hard and some types are even resistant to heat so this might make it the ideal material

for people who love to cook. One drawback to this material could be that if you`re looking for a modern colour you might be slightly restricted. The price ranges from €100–400 per square metre at Halmann Vella. Marble: Marble is a beautiful choice for kitchen top material, although it can easily be damaged with wear and tear. Many still opt for a marble countertop despite knowing about the material’s fragility, embracing the signs of wear and tear as an additional part of the stone’s natural beauty and character. Once the decision to opt for marble is taken, one can choose from a wide variety of colours, veining and textures. Prices range from €100–800 per square metre at Halmann Vella. Ceramic Slabs: Ceramic tiled countertops are a gorgeous substitute to traditional countertops. Whilst

the material is highly durable, it can look too artificial. The price ranges from €120–600 per square metre at Halmann Vella. Dekton: This is a new product on the market. Dekton is a sophisticated blend of raw materials used to produce the very latest in glass and porcelain, as well as the highest quality quartz work surfaces. This product is highly resistant to UV, is the most scratch resistant surface on the market, and is completely stain proof. Dekton withstands high temperatures without burning, scorching or cracking, and as a result, hot pots can be placed directly on this surface with no worry of any damage. Prices range from €400– 550 per square metre at Halmann Vella. Synthetic Stone: Synthetic or manufactured solid surface countertops are most often made

of acrylic, but also polyester resins, marble dust, and other pigments. Brands such as Dupont Corian® Solid Surfaces and STARON® Solid Surfaces produce synthetic stone, which is advantageous because as it’s nonporous, it’s resistant to stain, mildew, and germs. The material doesn’t require plywood underlayment and is strong and self-supporting. It’s easy to buff out scratches and can be installed for a seamless finish, as well as being made to imitate other high-end materials such as marble and granite Wood: Wood looks stunning and can offer a strong construction. With the right finish, it’s also long-lasting, although you will need to take particular care in areas such as around the sink where it is likely to come into regular contact with water. 041

LIGHTING Your kitchen is more than just a place to cook and eat – since it is the one area of the home that usually hosts many different activities, a variety of lighting is needed to accommodate them all. Further, since the kitchen is used first thing in the morning, and used long after sunset, it needs artificial lighting which makes it a necessity to create

an efficient lighting scheme. The best way to create the ideal lighting design is to do it when your kitchen is being created from scratch. The first thing to think about is using the most efficient light appropriate for the application. Plan circuits so that unnecessary lights may be turned off and make lights easy to control so that it’s convenient to turn them off when they’re not needed.

Layer lighting with ambient, task and accent lighting for a maximum impact. Ambient lighting provides general room illumination while task lighting helps you see better where it’s needed. Under-cabinet lighting in the kitchen is great for preparing meals, while accent lighting adds interest by focusing on an architectural details such as a display cabinet or an artwork. 043

FAUCETS The first thing to decide on when choosing a new faucet or replacing an old one, is whether to go for a deck-mount or a wall-mount faucet. Deck-mounts attach to the worktop or rest on the sink, while wall-mount faucets attach through the wall and hang over the sink. If you’re starting from scratch, choose your faucet before your sink so you can buy a sink with the appropriate number of holes for your selection. Before you choose your faucet, think about the ways you use your sink: Do you typically wash a lot of bulky pots and pans? This will determine whether you’re better off with a high-arc faucet.

7 The latest catering mixer from the Bridgepoint collection: the BP08 - Bahrija, made out of brushed stainless steel 304 which gives the kitchen that outstanding finish rather than the standard polished chrome finish.

Kitchen faucets will either have one handle rotating directionally to change water temperature or two handles for mixing hot and cold water. Hands-free faucets add a new dimension to the kitchen. They offer both temperature and volume control, and can be touch or motion-oriented, making them a safe choice for family homes. Keep in mind that if opting for a pullout or pull-down sprayer, finding a faucet with a magnetic catch is important. Faucet finishes are typically chrome and nickel/stainless steel, or bronze. For a unified look, select a faucet with a finish matching the existing cabinet hardware.

on the go via accessible smart appliances. Kitchen technology is getting increasingly smarter, making our lives easier, from sensor-activated lights that illuminate the kitchen only when it’s in use to meat thermometers that alert your smartphone when dinner is cooked. This extends to state-of-the-art appliances too including steam ovens, built-in coffee machines and wine coolers.

3 Nowadays the kitchen needs design systems that fully satisfy the ergonomic dynamics of function, ensuring maximum comfort and total reliability, such as this Luce Series pull-out sink mixer shower head with LED chrome, available from Bathroom Design 4 Simply place your smart device on a 100% non-porous, seamless and easy to clean DuPont™ Corian® kitchen top charging spot and power up.
