he major focus of kitchen design right now is smart spaces. Hi-tech makeovers with dedicated spots for smart devices are being created to hide charging stations and to store devices such as phones and tablets so that they are always operable, at hand and charged. The quintessential 2016 kitchen focuses on convenience for families on the go
via accessible smart appliances. Kitchen technology is all about making our lives easier and easier such as sensor-activated lights that illuminate the kitchen only when it’s in use and meat thermometers that alert your smartphone when dinner is cooked. This extends to stateof-the-art appliances too whether that be steam ovens, built-in coffee machines and wine coolers. Integrated kitchen-living spaces have
been a focus for quite some time now, and gone are the days of kitchens feeling disconnected from the rest of the home or less than accommodating cooking spaces. Today, however, kitchens are becoming even more streamlined with hidden and integrated appliances so they merge as seamlessly as possible into the living room area for an openplan space that does not feel overly functional.

Designers are doubling up storage in new, custom-made kitchens with clever multi-tiered drawers, as well as shelving in unexpected places. Lighting has moved on too. People no longer settle for just ceiling lights and table lamps to illuminate their kitchens. Extensive cabinet lighting, in particular low-voltage light tape strips are being used as accent pieces below cabinets, above cabinets, inside cabinets and below countertop overhangs, with LED lights now the norm. Combined with recessed lights, they offer far more options when creating mood lighting in kitchens.
With kitchen cabinets, not only are the colour options for kitchen cabinets changing, so are the way cabinet doors and drawers function. Today there are hydraulic, easy-close doors that fold up and out of the way with the touch of a button making them perfect for kitchens where space is an issue. Maximum kitchen storage has always been a need, especially for those living in an apartment or houses of character where kitchen space is limited. To
remedy this, designers are doubling up storage in new, custom kitchens with clever multi-tiered drawers, as well as shelving in unexpected places. Designers are also revisiting classical kitchen layouts, such as U-shaped kitchens. Creating a horseshoe kitchen not only maximises space, but also creates a a boundary between the kitchen and dining areas.

I envisage the introduction of colourful combinations between clear and monochrome tones, and the decreased use of wooden doors and cladding. The emblematic material for the season will be concrete – delicate grey surfaces combined with warm caramel wood finishes. This forms a very good argument against the feeling that concrete is too raw and industrial for interior décor. Instead, this combination creates a sensation of style, luxury and warmth.”

lex Mattei has been synonymous with food-loving for a long time now, and currently spends his days co-running the Galley Restaurant, the industrially chic workman’s’ Fort Cafe, the sandwich and catering company Brown & Rye, the artisanal bakery Da vinci, and last but certainly not least - the upmarket catering company Fifth Flavour. So it’s perhaps safe to say that Alex knows what he wants out of a kitchen. When the moment came for him to decide on a design for his personal home kitchen, he commissioned Violet Kulewska, the interior architectural and furniture designer renowned for her innovative, think-outside-of-the-box clean-lined design. “I had seen some of Violet’s work and got to know that she lived in a similar style building in Valletta,” says Alex. “The challenge was to incorporate old with new; something
modern wouldn’t have worked in my 1950s apartment, yet I needed a functional space. A kitchen is a chef’s workshop and needs to be practical. I looked at some pre-fabricated kitchens, and whilst there were some really lovely ones, none of them would have worked for me specifically - either in terms of style or practicality. I needed higher, larger counters, and ample, as well as accessible storage. My work experience is what made me want this. I decided that what I needed was a custom-built kitchen, designed alongside someone who understood both what I needed and what would work aesthetically.”’ Alex’s initial brief to Violet was to create something industrial. His priority was practicality, and so he assumed that his kitchen would inevitably carry similar aesthetics to that of a catering establishment kitchen. “I knew what was needed for a kitchen to work, but I didn’t

MY WORK EXPERIENCE IS WHAT MADE ME WANT THIS.’’ quite know how to go about it in terms of choosing the look that would be in harmony with the apartment.” Which is where Violet came in,. This suspended kitchen project was a was a small-scale project, yet a challenging one because while I took note of what Alex wanted, I knew that the industrial look wasn’t going to work,” explains Violet. “My original ideas were marble, stainless steel, and wood - yet, we both realised that these were too harsh for a home. I began to feel that juxtaposing local, vintage details against a clean Scandi design was ideal. Alex wanted to keep the original Maltese tiles, so this was the starting point for the style to evolve. He also wanted a farmhouse sink for its size and practicality, but also for its aesthetic appeal. Eventually, Alex found one in good condition on a local buying and selling website, while I gave him the vintage lamp that I
had found at one of the markets.”’ Apart from this evolving symbiosis of old and new, Violet came up with the notion to suspend a cabinet system to create a spacious and original kitchen concept, but also to expose the Maltese tiles, which are in the centre of the kitchen area. Alex felt that standard kitchen surfaces are too low and too short. He knew that when preparing food, he needed work space at a comfortable height so that he wouldn’t have to bend over for too long. In turn, Violet designed a deeper and above-standard height worktop. She created a layout whereby there are only a couple of metres between the counter and the cooker so that it’s just a matter of the cook turning around to face the cooker. She used birch plywood to build the kitchen units,

which are topped with striking Gris riven slate worktops in order to achieve the light and semi-Scandinavian look. The open shelves can be used as a display, or as a replacement for closed cupboards beneath the countertop. “We live in an era in which almost everything is designed,” says Violet. “These days, I feel like the kitchenware should be displayed, rather than hidden in cupboards.” As a result of the distinct brief and architect-client collaboration, the kitchen has become all about what Alex originally wanted; workspace, accessibility, storage - and a good-looking kitchen. Alex continues to evolve his design: “I’m in the process of designing a large butcher’s block on wheels that can be locked and placed alongside the cooker, or moved about the kitchen as required,” he says. “This will serve as a surface area near the cooker and an area for last minute prep. The block will also have knife storage and shelving beneath it. I haven’t found anything like it on the market so again, I am going to have it made.”’ 029

HERE’S A SIMPLE CHECKLIST TO HELP YOU GET STARTED SO THAT YOU’LL BE ON YOUR WAY TO A NEW KITCHEN IN NO TIME Renovating can be encumbering with all the different elements to consider and decisions to be made. However, the outcome is a hugely satisfying experience, from which you will reap the rewards long after you’ve forgotten how difficult the project may have been. Planning is key when undertaking a new kitchen project, and there are some smart and practical groundwork tips that can help you avoid going over budget and over time when creating your kitchen into the space you always wanted it to be. Some renovate their kitchen to help tidy up the home to sell, while others want to add to the comfort, use and value to the home. If you are in the latter category, consider what you want to achieve out of your new kitchen. It could be about better utilisation of the space you already have, catering to specific lifestyle needs such as accommodating a larger family. It could be about adding functionality or integrating the kitchen with other areas of your home. Firming up the main objective of a new kitchen is often only glanced over, but it’s of paramount importance to set clear goals and to communicate this with others involved in the project. Create a mood board so that you can visualise all your design elements together ahead of time. By putting samples of the materials and colours you’re considering using side-by-side, you’ll be able to see how the various design elements of the project come together. Keep this mood board in a prominent place, where you can see it every day, in the lead up to the project to ensure that you’re happy with what you’ve chosen. This will help you let go of any spur of the moment design choices. Try to avoid getting distracted by trends - take what you like but don’t feel you have to abide by them. Don’t underestimate space for appliances. Research your choice of appliances such as oven and cooktop, fridge, dishwasher and microwave ahead of time because their di-mensions will play an important role in the overall layout and finish of the kitchen. Be sure to allow for just the right amount of space to avoid unsightly gaps around appliances and to avoid disappointment when your new fridge doesn’t quite fit in its spot. This happens a lot more than people think. For a more seamless look, integrated appliances can really add that extra special touch to your kitchen, both comfort-wise and aesthetically.
Be realistic about the time frame it will take to create a kitchen - even a best case scenario is around four to six weeks, in which case you still need to be prepared for significant time without a kitchen. Set aside a space in another part of your home to keep your fridge running and be prepared to use your bathroom and laundry sinks more often to do the dishes. If you’re renovating during summer, an outdoor barbecue is the ideal alternative to a cooktop. While it’s very difficult to keep a tight schedule when it comes to renovating your kitchen, it’s important to be mindful of the order in which each renovation step process is carried out. If things are not carried out in the right order, you could wind up waiting for seeming-ly small elements to carry out the larger ones. This is a huge factor in kitchen renovations running over time. Try to take a fresh look at the kitchen you have now. What do you love about it, and what are the parts that you could really do without? How much time do you spend there? Does the room require more space in certain areas? More high-tech appliances? These answers will help guide you to a more customised plan.

HW CHECK LIST Consider the following: - Unless you’re a cook who knows exactly what you need and want, use the kitchen “work triangle” to design how your kitchen works. This is the distance between your cooking surface, fridge and sink. Ideally, each leg of the triangle should measure between 1.2 metres and 2.7 metres for optimal flow. If your kitchen is too large to stick to this rule, then at least make sure that the legs of the triangle aren’t interrupted by furniture or traffic. - If your kitchen space is large, consider building an island or a peninsula which can double as a workstation and a casual dining/seating area. They can also act as dividers between rooms, and a peninsula connecting your kitchen to a family room will give the entire space an open, airy flow, and is great for entertaining guests. - Once you figure out where you’ll be working the most, think about equipping each task area with good lighting, proper appliances and power outlets. - Leave nothing out - assign space for appliances, fixtures, cabinetry and furnishings.
CREATE A BUDGET
Be realistic about what you can afford. Then think about where you can save money and also where you will need to invest more to make your kitchen work for you. Always keep a 10 percent contingency within your budget to cover unforeseen aspects and to avoid surprises.
DETERMINE WHETHER YOU NEED HELP OR NOT
If you’re thinking about hiring a professional designer, start looking into it at this stage. Don’t sit on it - begin researching the best designer for you.
3 TO 6 WEEKS BEFORE… START THINKING ABOUT STYLE
By considering and choosing your desired style ahead of time, you’ll have enough time at this stage to choose alternatives if you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for.
DECIDE ON START DATE

If structural changes are coming into your ideas, get help. 3. You’re renovating an old home. Older kitchens often require specific structural or design advice that you may not be aware of.

CABINETRY Kitchen cabinet trends and materials have not changed as much as other areas around the kitchen, but a few notable trends have developed over the past couple of years. Since so many kitchens are now part of a larger open-plan space, choosing cabinet styles, colours and functions that fit with the overall look of the home is becoming increasingly popular. Today many people are passing over custom cabinets in favour of more affordable, yet design-friendly, semicustom made cabinets. The dominant other trend in kitchen cabinetry is still a clean-lined subtle design that ensures long-term design flexibility. Shaker-style cabinets have made a huge comeback over the past couple of years and although the plain, square design may seem classical and a little plain, a lot of attractive designs have been developed
based on it. It is particularly popular with solid wood as with its unfussy design, it lets the natural beauty of the wood come through. In terms of colour, white and neutral shades - particularly grey - are strong. Refined neutrals and earthy tones tend to work well with a variety of design elements since these colours not only provide a sense of warmth, but also allow for the design freedom to add vibrant colours elsewhere, providing a seamless blend throughout the home. Monochrome kitchens have made an appearance this year. They offset the clean-lined look well and can also create a balance between rustic, modern and transitional kitchens. A focus on storage, organisation and access continues to be a major consideration with every corner of the kitchen used to maximum effect, along with new ways to give better access to hard-to-reach corners. Installing
toe-kick drawers beneath lower cabinets, adding extra drawers above upper cabinets, and installing pull-out shelving and Lazy Susans in corner cabinetry have all become the norm. Square and vertical rectangle shapes are still the preferred designs for kitchen cabinets, although there is a rise in horizontal cabinetry. As cabinets get wider, there is less of a need to stack them if there is enough storage. This not only makes access much easier, but gives the kitchen a cleaner, more refined look. Adding drawer inserts to declutter pots, pans and other kitchen utensils helps with further organisation. Kitchen designers are responding to the demand for constant connection to the outside world with a technological perspective being added to kitchen cabinets by way of built-in charging stations, hands-free functionality and tablet holders. 037

CABINETRY MATERIALS Kitchen cabinets are made from a wide range of materials including wood, laminate, stainless steel, thermofoil, melamine, lacquer and acrylic. Each option has its own advantages and disadvantages, but it’s really a personal choice depending on your lifestyle and tastes. At first glance, solid wood offers natural beauty and a more classical look, while manmade materials have an endless range of colours and a more contemporary style. Today it’s also possible to combine more than one material or include the same material in two different finishes or colours.
Solid wood offers a sturdy construction, as well as a look and feel of affluence and elegance. However, solid wood is generally more expensive than other types of cabinetry. Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) is made by combining wood fibres with wax and resin. The mixture is then subjected to high heat and pressure to form panels which are denser than plywood. The appearance of MDF is more uniform than natural wood since there are no knots or rings. Also, this material is less expensive than solid wood, making it a popular choice for the construction of kitchen cabinets. The downside to MDF is that it will warp
or bend under certain conditions, such as excessive weight, or high humidity environments. Another disadvantage is that during construction, such as cutting or sawing, urea formaldehyde, a substance contained within the product, can be released into the air, and can cause irritation to the eyes and lungs. Particle Board is an engineered wood composite material made of a combination of wood particles, wood chips, sawmill shavings, and sometimes sawdust. A binder such as a synthetic resin is used to cause these components to stick together under pressure and extrusion. This product is often accompanied by wood veneer

Melamine can be painted in any desired colour and is relatively inexpensive, but it scratches easily. While presenting a somewhat cold look, stainless steel can look impressive. Cabinets are usually made by fixing a layer of stainless steel over an MDF base to achieve the desired structural stability. Beyond the actual construction materials used in kitchen cabinetry, there are also a wide variety of finishing choices. Wood cabinets can
be distressed to create an aged, oldworld look or finished with shellac, lacquer, varnish or polyurethane in order to allow the natural grains to be seen. of acrylic, but also polyester resins, marble dust, and other pigments. Brands such as Dupont Corian® Solid Surfaces and STARON® Solid Surfaces produce synthetic stone, which is advantageous because as it’s nonporous, it’s resistant to stain, mildew, and germs. The material doesn’t require plywood underlayment and is strong and self-supporting. FAUCETS The first thing to decide on when choosing a new faucet or replacing an old one, is whether to go for a deck-mount or a wall-mount faucet. Deck-mounts attach to the worktop or rest on the sink, while wall-mount faucets attach through the wall and hang over the sink. If you’re starting from scratch, choose your faucet before your sink so you can buy a sink with the appropriate number of holes for your selection. Before you choose your faucet, think about the ways you use your sink: Do you typically wash a lot of bulky pots and pans? This will determine whether you’re better off with a high-arc faucet.
