By “cyclists we don't mean the fancy, clip shoes set, out on 50 miles weekend ride. We mean people like us, wearing regular clothes, using bicycles for commuting and other daily purposes. We are not just cyclists. We are regular people just like motorists who try to commute on the road. Yet bicycle is the most efficient vehicle human ever made. Bicycles create zero percent carbon dioxide of every single trip, while cars pollute the air 31% of overall pollution each day. Ironically, cyclists are often the target of the animosity of many drivers, despite the good that cyclist do in reducing overall traffic by reducing the total number of cars on the road. Bicycles are vehicles that have the same legal rights to the road as automobile drivers. The issues between motorists and cyclists have grown over the decades. But I want this conflict to end. Bicycle commute is not only beneficial for commute bikers, but, for the city as a whole. The hope is that drivers will look to replace the yelling, honking and other forms of negative press associated with bicycles to signs of respect, and gratitude for the people that take it among themselves to make a positive impact on traffic conditions in the city, the overall commute.

THE MORE BICYCLES, THE GREENER THE CITY. UNFORTUNATELY, MANY PEOPLE ARE RELUCTANT TO RIDE THEIR BICYCLES ON THE ROAD BECAUSE THEY FEEL VULNERABLE AND UNSAFE WHILE THEY ACTUALLY HAVE THE RIGHT TO STAY ON THE ROAD AS CARS DO. There is a rivalry between motorists and cyclists, even as they both have the same rights of the road as each other. Most of the time, motorists believe bicyclists are a hindrance to their progress, often blocking the way, creating an overall negative bicycling environment. Yet these same motorists fail to see the negative results of their vehicles. Despite the convenience, traffic is at an all time high, and even the expanding road system can hardly accommodate the increasing commuter city numbers. The convenience of a car often seems to trump the rights afforded bicycle riders, where daily cyclists are verbally assaulted and occasionally face physical harm at the hands of drivers both unaware or uncaring. Bicyclists should receive more provision to make them feel safer on the road, so that they can feel a sense of pride, rather than alienation, that they are helping their city. Changing bike related infrastructures may take as long as a decade and a large sum of money, but changing the cyclist relations with motorists requires relatively less time and fewer dollars. Furthermore, the changes made by changing the culture between the two rival commuting forces will continue to grow and create a better system for all parties even outside of the two already mentioned groups.

TOPIC OPPORTUNITIES
S O LU TI O N
I want to use design and strategies to change the mentality and behavior of people to one that reflects responsibility for sharing the road with others. Finding ways to create road safety awareness among the two groups of commuters. At the same time, I want to make a good relationship between motorists and cyclists, so that each does not believe the other is wrong while they believe that they are always in the right. I want motorists to understand the cyclists in order to make the road both safe and secure for everyone using it. We need to act now not only to have a better infrastructure, which will help solve the problem. This is about changing culture from what it was, to a better, friendlier way. This way, it will be a long term solution.

CHAPTER ONE
MOTORISTS VS CYCLISTS CYCLING IS AN EFFECTIVE, HEALTHY AND ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY FORM OF TRANSPORT. PEOPLE WHO RIDE THEIR BICYCLES TO WORK, TO SCHOOL AND FOR RECREATION, BENEFIT THE WHOLE COMMUNITY. JUST LIKE MOTORISTS, CYCLISTS ARE PERMITTED TO RIDE ON THE ROAD. IN DOING SO, HOWEVER, CYCLISTS ARE EXPECTED TO OBEY THE ROAD RULES, JUST AS MOTORISTS ARE. Bicycle accidents are increasing faster than bicycle ridership. And most of accidents were between cars related. One big reason that make people afraid of riding their bicycles is cars. Cyclists think motorists are crazy, On the other hand, motorists think cyclists are crazy too. The issue between motorists and cyclists might be the most important thing to improve road safety which most of the time people just ignore it, forget about it and try to improve all kind of facilities that will increase road safety which is good thing but it could takes a decade to do something.

ACTUALLY IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE VEHICLE THAT IS BEING USED TO TRAVEL WITH. IT IS ABOUT THE ATTITUDE OF THE ROAD USERS TO OTHERS USING THE ROAD. There is a growing lack of respect for others in all areas of human social interaction. This translates to a decrease in safety across the board, including road safety. To increase road safety starts with the individual, not in the hope that the other will simply make it better for you. Changing people’s mentalities and behaviors is key to this project’s success. The issue between motorists and bicyclists has been a problem for decades. And it has yet to have been solved. I believe that one we pay attention to the issues, we can increase the partnership between motorists and cyclists. As a result, we can make the city a friendly and cooperative place for all, both cyclists and motorists. Beyond enforcement, perhaps one of the most effective ways the CHP can help improve the situation is by appealing to auto makers to eliminate car advertising that promotes aggressive driving. Car commercials are one of the most prevalent categories of commercial. Many of the commercials promote the false notion that cares own the road (or more accurately, that each individual car driver owns the road) and this leads to many problems.

B. INATTENTION MOTORISTS ENDANGER BICYCLISTS OFTEN BY NOT PAYING ATTENTION. THEY DON’T EXPECT BICYCLES TO BE THERE WITH THEM ON THE ROAD OR ARE DISTRACTED BY PHONE CONVERSATIONS, ETC. GENERALLY THERE IS A LOW REGARD FOR THE SAFETY OFOTHER ROAD USERS. DRIVERS OFTEN: 1. Travel above the posted speed limit. 2. Pass motor vehicles when bicyclists are using the opposing half of the roadway. 3. Fail to yield to bicyclists who stop at stop signs. 4. Fail to yield to bicyclists who walk in a crosswalk. 5. Open car doors without looking back or without looking in their side-view mirrors when parked. 6. Exit driveways and/or parking places without looking for pedestrians or cyclists. 7. Fail to look for cyclists in bicycle lanes before making right turns. 8. Fail to signal before and during turns. 9. Cross the centerline in blind curve situations. 10. Cross the centerline to cut the corner. 11. Allow their trailers to go beyond the road’s edge.
C. PASSING ONE OF THE MORE COMMON PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED BY BICYCLISTS IS MOTORISTS PASSING CYCLISTS UNSAFELY. DRIVERS OFTEN: 1. Pass on blind curves. 2. Pass too close for safety. 3. Move into the oncoming lane to pass a cyclist without being aware of oncoming traffic and/or speed of the cyclist, oftentimes making it necessary to prematurely re-enter the lane, forcing the cyclist off the road. Suggestions for passing a cyclist safely: 4. Check carefully to make sure that there is no oncoming traffic. 5. Signal your intention to pass to those behind. 6. Pass at least 3 feet from the cyclist.

example of motorists endangering bicyclists in a turning situation. Amended Ch. 50, Stats. 1973. Effective January 1, 1974.
E. FREEWAY EGRESS Drivers need to be aware of yielding to bicyclists at freeway entrances and exits. Bicyclists are often unable to proceed straight ahead on roads intersecting freeway on-ramps, because motorists fail to give them right of way. Many people mistakenly believe that a right-turning motor vehicle has the right of way over a bicycle heading straight in these circumstances.

F. DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE Driving while intoxicated by alcohol and illegal drugs is addressed by current law. Driving under the influence of prescription medications that cause inattentiveness or poor reflexes while driving needs further regulation, to increase awareness and reduce accident occurrence. G. MOTOR VEHICLE DESIGN THERE ARE MANY VEHICLE DESIGN INADEQUACIES THAT LESSEN ROAD SAFETY. SOME ARE: 1. Overly wide and tall vehicles that take up road space and make it difficult for their drivers to judge how near a bicyclist is. 2. Tinted glass that is so dark it’s difficult to make eye contact with the driver at intersections or other appropriate times. 3. Trucks that have long, tall gaps between front and rear wheels without guards (e.g., tanker trucks, logging trucks, and flatbed trucks).
ROAD HAZARDS A. Glass and fallen rocks on the shoulder of the road B. Poor road conditions: potholes, patches, no adequate shoulder or one that disappears. C. Parked cars in the designated bicycle lanes. D. Double-parked cars. E. Poorly planned streets and a lack of bicycle lanes. F. Lack of good signage designating bicycle routes and paths.

W H Y M OTO R I STS CONFLICT WITH CYC L I STS ALMOST EVERY BIKE RIDE, SHORT OR LONG, I WILL ENCOUNTER AT LEAST ONE MOTORIST WHO WILL TREAT ME AS IF I DON’T HAVE A RIGHT TO THE ROAD. Their behavior manifests in a plethora of ways. It might be an angry horn blast as they pass, OR Sometimes they stomp the gas and speed around you just to turn off a hundred feet ahead. In warmer months, when windows roll down, more of them will shout obscenities and give us an unpleasant display of rude hand gestures. Cyclists around the world have been trying to figure out why all hate is directed at cyclists. Motorists will offer up reasons such as “they slow me down”, “roads are for cars”, and “cyclists” don’t obey traffic laws.” etc.

OF COURSE WE SLOW THEM DOWN. SO DO TRAFFIC LIGHTS, SPEED BUMPS, SCHOOL BUSES, RAILROAD CROSSINGS, SNOWY CONDITIONS, TRAFFIC JAMS, ETC But none of these things tend to piss a motorists off like a cyclist in their lane of traffic. I hope the ones that claim that “roads are for cars and not for bicycles” are not serious. Any educated person knows that in the United States of American and most other countries throughout the world, the bicycle has the legal status of a vehicle. According to Carlton Reed’s “Roads Were Not Built For Cars” to be released this Spring, “cyclists were the first group in a generation to use roads and were the first to push for high-quality sealed surfaces and were the first to lobby for national funding and leadership for roads.” As far as the claim goes that cyclists’ don’t obey traffic laws, most do. The ones that don’t, probably don’t obey all traffic laws while operating a motor vehicle. However, statistics show that competitive road cyclists report safer driving behavior than drivers who have no cycling experience at all. Therefore, it’s not because they are a cyclist that they choose to break the law and if they get caught doing so, I will be the first to say they should have to answer for that decision. The hate between motorists and cyclists have been an issue for decades, a lot of motorists do not really about endanger the cyclists. They even drive as close as they can to get past cyclists.

Dr Tom Stafford BSc, PhD Research Interests, publications, grants and other activites are ... ...available from this webpage http://tomstafford.staff.shef. ac.uk/.”
A study issued earlier this year found that motor vehicle drivers and cyclists are equally responsible for car-bike collisions in Minneapolis. But, as comments to media reports of that study demonstrate, the finger pointing continues, with bicyclists blaming aggressive drivers for most collisions and drivers blaming “inconsiderate and stupid” cyclists. The anger from motorists toward cyclists seems especially raw. So I read with interest British psychologist Tom Stafford’s latest Neurohacks column for BBC Future in which he offers his theory for “why cyclists enrage car drivers.”
“IT’S NOT BECAUSE CYCLISTS ARE ANNOYING,” HE WRITES. “IT ISN’T EVEN BECAUSE WE HAVE A SELECTIVE MEMORY FOR THAT ONE STAND-OUT ANNOYING CYCLIST OVER THE HUNDREDS OF BORING, NON-ANNOYING ONES (ALTHOUGH THAT PROBABLY IS A FACTOR). NO, MY THEORY IS THAT MOTORISTS HATE CYCLISTS BECAUSE THEY THINK THEY OFFEND THE MORAL ORDER.”
BY PATC H A R A C H A R O E N S I R I
And one way humans have evolved to deal with that problem is altruistic punishment. “Altruistic punishment is a punishment that costs you as an individual, but doesn’t bring any direct benefit,” explains Stafford. “As an example, imagine I’m at a football match and I see someone climb in without buying a ticket. I could sit and enjoy the game (at no cost to myself), or I could try to find security to have the guy thrown out (at the cost of missing some of the game). That would be altruistic punishment.” Evolution has built into the human mind a hatred of free-riders and cheaters, which activates anger when we confront people acting like this — and it is this anger which prompts altruistic punishment. In this way, the emotion is evolution’s way of getting us to overcome our short-term self-interest and encourage collective social life.
So now we can see why there is an evolutionary pressure pushing motorists towards hatred of cyclists. Deep within the human psyche, fostered there because it helps us co-ordinate with strangers and And how, exactly, do cyclists offend that moral so build the global society that is a hallmark of our order? It has to do, Stafford explains, with two species, is an anger at people who break the rules, cornerstones of cooperation theory: the “free rider who take the benefits without contributing to the problem” and “altruistic punishment.” cost. And cyclists trigger this anger when they use the roads but don’t follow the same rules as cars. The free rider problem is the resentment that occurs when we believe some people are “cheating” at what Now, cyclists reading this might think “but the Stafford calls the “game of coordination where we have to rely on each other to do the right thing.” In other words, we get angry when we think someone else is getting away with something by breaking society’s agreed-upon rules.

WHY BICYCLES THE BICYCLE IS A HUMAN POWERED VEHICLE. THE MORE YOU RIDE THE HEALTHIER YOU ARE. ITS BENEFITS EXCEED BEYOND THE RIDER AND BENEFITS THE URBAN ENVIRONMENTS AND AIR QUALITY. Cycling is an effective, healthy and environmentally friendly form of transport. People who ride their bicycles to work, to school and for recreation, benefit the whole community. Just like motorists, cyclists are permitted to ride on the road. In doing so, however, cyclists are expected to obey the Road Rules, just as motorists are. Unfortunately, many people are reluctant to ride their bicycles on the road because they feel vulnerable and unsafe. I personally think this city could be an ideal cycling city. By the geography and climate create an unique advantage to this city. We could have much more people who use bicycles for their daily purposes. The more bicycles, the more greener city. However, safety should play an important part to make this city become an ideal cycling city, not only the city that has plenty of bicycles but danger to ride.

Instead of driving a car, you can hop on your bike. You could save the bus fee, gas and parking fee either insurance you have to pay each month. Biking is not only is it better for you, but scientists at the University of Wisconsin say more biking could stimulate local economies to the tune of $3.5 billion a year. The scientists researched the economic and health benefits of biking short trips (shorter than five miles) in 11 Midwestern metro areas.

Combining data on air pollution, medical costs, mortality rates, car accidents and physical fitness, the researchers found that if inhabitants of the sample region switched to bikes for half of their short trips, they’d create a net societal health benefit of $3.5 billion per year from the increase in air quality and $3.8 billion in savings from smaller health care costs associated with better fitness and fewer mortalities from a decreased rate of car accidents. We already knew that biking saved money and served as a stimulus to the local economy to the tune of more than $13,000 a year. And we know that the more people we can entice out of their cars with safe and reliable options, the better it will be for everyone, from bus rider to car user. Now we know one more benefit to a more bikeable San Francisco—a chance to peddle our way to greater prosperity through savings in health care costs.

In 2012, the SFMTA counted 12,00 bikes in the city, and Reset has covered the improvements in the works to make the city even more bike friendly, from new bike lanes to buffered bike lanes to bike sharing programs. We’re working hard to reset transportation in San Francisco, making it faster, more efficient and reliable for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you ride a bike or a bus, drive your car or use your feet, everyone deserves to get where they’re going safely, quickly and reliably. It’s no secret that getting out from behind the wheel of your car and riding a bike can benefit both you and the planet. For example, people who perform aerobic exercise a few times a week are at decreased risk of diabetes, heart disease and also tend to lose weight. Exercise can also reduce anxiety and depression. It’s also good for your pocketbook as fuel prices are still pretty high and show no sign of significantly declining anytime soon. Like this infographic states, Americans alone spend 20% of their income on transportation. —HEALTHCAREMANAGEMENTDEGREE

The increase of biking is the increase of air quality as well. Air pollution, global climate change, traffic congestion, economic dependance on fossil fuels are all reduced by biking instead of driving. Bicycling as transportation is even recommended by the Union of Concerned Scientists as a personal way to help stop global climate change. Californians avoid producing seven tons of smog-forming gases per day by getting on bikes.

CONVINCING CAR DRIVERS ABOUT POLLUTION VOLITLE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS Volitle organic compounds these react with nitrogen oxides to form ground level ozone. Unlike the good ozone high up in the stratosphere, ground level ozone reacts with lung tissue to cause coughing, and shortness of breath; it’s especially bad for children or if you already have asthma. NITROGEN OXIDES Nitrogen oxides which are also known as “NOx”: these nasty compounds help form ground-level ozone as well as lead to acid rain. CARBON MONOXIDE Carbon monoxide which is a colorless and odorless gas, reduces the blood’s ability to carry oxygen to important places like your brain. Almost all of the carbon monoxide in urban air comes from vehicles. CARBON DIOXIDE Carbon dioxide which is building up in the earth’s atmosphere is a greenhouse gas. Each year it traps more heat in the atmosphere warming the planet. Rising carbon dioxide levels will make hurricanes more intense as well as have a whole range of negative effects on California.

WHY NOT CARS OWNING A CAR COSTS YOU MORE THAN JUST A STICKER PRICE. YOU HAVE TO PAY GAS, PARKING, INSURANCE ETC. AND NOT TO MENTION SURPRISED PARKING TICKETS. There are times when car becomes a necessity, but there are also money to spend on basic things like gas and garage—say 400 square feet at $100 a square foot. That’s $40,000 of your mortgage that’s going to the car. Plus, if you’re like 76% of Americans, you drive to work alone—and it takes you about 50 minutes a day round-trip on average. Your driving costs are counted in AAA’s estimate. Let’s say your time is worth $25 an hour. Add up that 50 minute commute every weekday for all but two weeks a year and you’re spending about $5,200 a year. After 10 years, that’s $52,000 worth of your time, gone, not to mention the $94,500 in direct car costs, without even including your garage financing costs.

04:1 M O N T H LY CAR COSTS MO NTHLY PAY MEN TS If you don’t have enough cash saved up to buy a car, you will need to get a loan. Most lenders require you to put a down payment on the car, as well as make a minimum monthly payment until you have paid off the loan. If you haven’t established credit yet or you are not 18 years old, you may need a co-signer to get the loan. When financing a loan, the lender will require you to have full insurance coverage on the vehicle. INS URANCE Any car you drive is required by law to have a minimum amount of liability insurance to protect others in the event you harm them or their property. Insurance costs vary depending on where you live, your age, your gender, the type of car you drive, your driving record, and more. For example, in California you need at least 15/30/5 coverage. However, it is recommended that you purchase 100/300/100 coverage or even 300/500/100. The higher coverage costs more, but should you need it, it pays for more medical and repair costs for the people or property that you hit.

G AS A regular cost you can count on is gasoline. With high gas prices, this cost will add up quickly. Gas is especially costly if you drive a big car, a car with a big engine, or any car that you drive frequently or long distances or that is poorly maintained. Before you purchase a car, know the vehicle’s MPG—that’s howmany miles per gallon you can drive on a gallon of gas. MA I N TE N A N C E A N D R E PA I R S Putting oil in the car, replacing a dead battery, and buying new tires are a few other maintenance costs car owners pay. An oil change is at least $20. You’ll probably need to change your oil every 3,000–5,000 miles. A new battery easily costs $50. A new set of tires for a compact car is more than $200, with tires for big cars being much more! R E G I STR ATI O N Every year you must register your car with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Registration fees are lower for less expensive and older cars—maybe $100 a year for an older mid-size truck, as opposed to close to $500 for a new big truck. Some states, including California, also require you to get a smog check every two years for vehicles 5 years and older. A smog check costs $45 or more.

HIDDEN COSTS OF OWNING A CAR D E P R E C I AT I O N This is the loss of value to your car due to age and use. For a new car, the depreciation in the first year is 20% or more. RIDES FOR FRIENDS Being a taxi for friends who don’t have wheels may make you popular, but it will cost you. Gas, maintenance, repairs and even your insurance costs may go up because you’re driving more. MEDICAL This pays your medical costs if you are at fault in an accident. Consider adding this coverage if you cannot afford hospital bills. COMPREHENSIVE This pays for damage to your car by theft, wind, vandalism or any means other than a collision. This coverage will help you pay for repairs or replacement of your vehicle, after you pay the deductible.

violation to hundreds of dollars for a moving violation such as speeding. Plus, insurance rates go up about 15% after just one moving violation. Attending traffic school can help keep your insurance rates lower, but you still have to pay for the ticket and for the cost of traffic school. This will probably cost you more than $300.
TOWING & ROAD SERVICE If your car breaks down, how would you get it to the repair shop? If you have towing insurance, your car can be towed to a repair shop at no charge. Usually very inexpensive, towing insurance could be a good investment if you do not have this coverage in your auto warranty or through an automobile club.
ACCIDENTS These will also increase the cost of your auto insurance if you caused the accident. DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE A DUI ticket can cost you thousands of dollars and time in jail, plus your license will be revoked. Never drink and drive, at any age.

RESEARCH& SOLUTIONS THERE SEEMS TO BE SO MANY POSSIBILITIES TO IMPROVE CYCLING NETWORKS. BUT THE MAIN PROBLEM BEING CONFLICT BETWEEN CARS AND BICYCLES IS STILL AN ISSUE. CHANGING PEOPLES PERSPECTIVE IS THE MOST CHALLENGING THING TO DO. I have started this project since 2011 with the basic same goal which is trying to improve cycling network. At first I start this project with the scope of reaching in Sam Francisco only. I found out San Francisco is one of the best cities to ride bicycles. However Accidents and that have happened between motorists and cyclists has been increasing very fast. Actually it increases faster than a number of ridership. A lot of people afraid of being run over by cars and that is one of the main reason why some people afraid of commuting by bicycles. If we take a look at some cycling city such as Amsterdam, the drivers totally concern about cyclists and treat them a kind of vehicle.

To improves cycling network seems like has so many possibilities that we can improve this weather promote the personal protection gears such as helmets or lights. Or something that can take ten years to do like creating bike lanes.
BIKE LANES ARE GOOD, EVERYONE KNOW THAT, BUT IT DOESN’T TAKE A MONTH TO DO IT. IT MUST HAVE TO GO THROUGH SO MANY PROCESSES WEATHER POLITIC AND ECONOMY ISSUE AND THAT USUALLY TAKES A DECADE. Changing people mentality requires nothing but people mind. To share the road is a very basic and common idea that could happen to anywhere but many not every culture. Yet culture could possibly slowly change. however it seems impossible to stop hate between cyclist and motorist in almost every cities. Create awareness was the idea that i was going to do for this thesis, but from the study and research I have made and asked people over and over, no one can give me any confidence that this war will stop. Basically it is impossible, Even the time that these two group of people will met is only 10 second at the red light. Beside that they might see each other as friends, family, co-worker, not motorist and cyclists.

05:1 NEW BIKE LANE IN ADDITION TO MORE BIKE LANES, WE NEED TO PROVIDE SAFER AND BETTER DESIGNED BIKE LANES. NEW BIKE LANE DESIGN Bike lane creates safety and convenient to rider. However, bike lane could be an even better that it was. Most of the time that accident happens on bike lane according to riders do not watch out the door way that car driver open the door. In this case the rider has right to stay on bike lane and what if a rider hit a car door, that is going to be car driver fault according to California law. However,We have to share the road fairly with cars, therefore, we have to make the most efficient use of avilable space. This design is both safer and better suited to city streets.

This is one of the serious problems for riders who have to lock their bike in open spaces. All of them said they are afraid of their bike being stolen. Therefore, I would like to produce the anti-theft microchip for bicycles. It’s similar to what we use in scooter or motor bicycle. It can locate itself in GPS and creates energy by its self. It works by installing the microchip into the bicycle frame and connect to your device to locate your bicycle. Even if your bike has got stolen, you are able to know the direction and go get it back on time. Moreover we are able to put the thieves to prison, get rid of this kind of people. This is where my project begins. By having a bike sharing program for drivers that will create empathy between drivers and cyclists that share the same road.
