This is my book. My name is:

Please read it to me. Thank you.

33

Paige and Paxton run up the sidewalk and knock on their grandparents’ door.

4

Much to their surprise, Parker opens the door. Parker is Paige and Paxton’s cousin.

“We’ve been waiting for you,” says Parker. “You’re late—10 minutes, to be exact.”

5

Parker is always throwing around numbers. For example, Parker is six years old, just like Paige. But he always says he is six and a half. That bothers Paige a lot, but Paxton not so much.

6

Even with this drama, the three cousins love to come to their grandparents’ house for Sunday dinner.

7

A big piece of the fun is checking on the grownups. Grandmama Puzzle is in the kitchen making a chocolate fudge cake. The cousins lend a hand. Parker measures one cup of flour. Paige and Paxton add two eggs.

8

Grandmama Puzzle carefully places the cake in the oven. “350 degrees,” notes Parker. “For one hour,” adds Grandmama.

9

In the backyard, the dads are playing basketball. Parker notes the score is tied. “Nothing but net!” shouts Parker’s dad as he makes a jump shot.

10

“Two more points for me!” says Parker’s dad. “It’s 8–6,” notes Parker.

11

The cousins move to Parker’s mom and his baby sister, Prudence. Parker starts to sort Prudence’s blocks. The circles first. Then the squares...

12

Before Parker can move the last block into place, Prudence mixes them up again. Then she claps her hands and giggles with joy.

13

“Time to eat,” calls Grandmama Puzzle from the kitchen door. Paige, Paxton and Parker run inside.

14

This is the best part. The cousins like it when the entire family is together, eating around Grandmama’s dinner table. It’s when everyone catches up on what everyone else is doing.

15

Parker goes first. “I’ve found my perfect fit,” says Parker.

16

Parker’s mom and dad smile because this is a really big thing in Puzzleland.

17

In Puzzleland, all the puzzle pieces are different, but each has a perfect fit. A perfect fit is something you love to do.

18

It’s what makes Puzzleland perfect.

19

Both Paige and Paxton have found their perfect fit.

Paige loves science.

Paxton loves technology.

20

Now Parker has found his, too. “My perfect fit is math,” he says proudly.

21

Math is the study of numbers, shapes and patterns.

8

1 5

2+5=7

12 3.14 6-4=2

22

We use math when there’s no room for error.

23

“But math can’t be a perfect fit,” says Paige. “You can’t be a mathema... mathetol... a math person.”

24

“It’s math-e-ma-ti-cian,” says Grandmama. “And of course he can.”

25

Math is everywhere.

26

We use math all the time, so sometimes we don’t think of it as something all to itself.

27

Think of all the ways that math has helped us today. Math is how we knew how long to bake the cake...

How to keep score in the basketball game...

28

... and how to sort Prudence’s blocks.

“Math is how we know that Paige is six years old,” adds Parker. “That I’m six and a half and Grandmama Puzzle is—” “Never mind,” says Grandmama Puzzle. “We get the idea.”

29

“If we all use math, how do we know that math is Parker’s perfect fit?” asks Paige. “Good question,” says Grandmama. “Let’s test your theory.”

30

Mathematicians love to work with numbers.

Parker loves to work with numbers!

31

Mathematicians love patterns. They love spotting patterns and working with patterns.

32

Parker loves patterns!

Mathematicians love to be precise.

Parker loves to be precise!

33

Parker’s perfect fit is math!

34

“The best part is that even if we don’t love math, we can still be good at it,” says Grandmama.

35

“It just takes practice, and practicing can be fun,” says Parker. Parker takes out his calculator. “That doesn’t look like fun to me,” says Paxton.

36

“I’m afraid I have to agree with Paxton,” says Grandmama. Grandpapa reaches for his favorite game.

37

Now everyone is in agreement: That looks like fun. Paige, Paxton and Parker are thrilled to pieces. They love Sundays at their grandparents’ house.

Our Mission Change the course of a nation by making STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) easy to teach and easy to learn at the very beginning of a child’s educational experience Our Vision World Domination through STEM Why We Do What We Do For Kids: 80% of adults in STEM fields had at least one parent in the field. This means a huge number of our kids are missing out on opportunities that can be life changing. For Teachers: Classroom teachers face unprecedented challenges to meet expectations and standards. Teachers need time-saving resources that enable them to make small shifts in their classroom lessons to drive STEM interest and create a STEM mindset. For Our Nation: We’re losing the battle. Thirty years ago, 40% of the world’s scientists and engineers came from the U.S. Today, it’s 15%. STEM fields are where the well paying jobs are—and will be—in the global marketplace.
