The Adventures of Paige & Paxton

Penelope, Paige and Paxton have an important task at hand: shopping for their school carnival. The last stop is Puzzleland Emporium, a big box store in the center of the island packed with everything the three friends could ever want or imagine. It’s the perfect backdrop to uncover packaging engineering, a field that doesn’t get a lot of attention. The story also sheds light on something else that often goes unnoticed: we live in a world in which virtually everything is the product of engineering—from our airplanes, computers, bridges and skyscrapers to the versatile containers that cover and protect the things we use everyday. Look for more titles in this delightful series that introduces young minds to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) in a fun and engaging way. This is my book. My name is:

3

Penelope, Paige and Paxton could spend an entire day—no, a week— in Puzzleland Emporium.

4

This store has everything you can imagine—and then some.

5

It has things with polka dots‌

6

‌and things with stripes.

It has things you can push…

…and things you can pull.

7

It has things you can eat.

8

And if that’s not enough, it even has places you can sleep.

9

“No time for naps,” says Penelope’s mom. “We still have quite a few things to get for the school carnival.”

10

Penelope’s mom is on the carnival planning committee. A committee is a group that works together on something.

Penelope, Paige and Paxton have come along to make sure she gets everything they need.

11

Penelope’s mom plans all kinds of events all over Puzzleland.

12

Planning events is her perfect fit.

13

A perfect fit is something that you love to do.

14

In Puzzleland, all the puzzle pieces are different, but each has a perfect fit. It’s what makes Puzzleland perfect.

15

“Okay. Back to work,” says Penelope’s mom, checking her list. “Party favors are next.”

16

But Penelope, Paige and Paxton have something else in mind.

17

When they finally arrive at the party favor isle, Penelope, Paige and Paxton decide on orange and blue, their school colors.

18

They place balloons, streamers and tablecloths in the cart.

“Next are cups, plates, knives, forks and spoons.

Penelope, Paige and Paxton have learned that working together is a good way to get things done faster.

19

Just then, Penelope notices an array of beautiful boxes in the next isle.

20

“What are these?” asks Penelope.

“The boxes are so cool!” says Penelope.

21

“Thank you. We designed them,” says one of the puzzle pieces.

22

“We’re packaging engineers.”

“Packaging engineers?” asks Penelope. Penelope is excited.

Paige and Paxton are excited, too. Engineering is Penelope’s perfect fit!

23

Engineering is the way we make sure the things we use work the way they’re supposed to work.

24

Packaging engineering is the way we make sure packaging works the way it’s supposed to work.

25

Packaging engineers love to design packages.

26

Packaging engineers love to make packages.

27

Packaging engineers love to decide what goes in what kind of package.

28

Packaging engineers are the ones who make sure things don’t get messed up or broken before we can use them.

29

“When we think about engineering, we typically think about machines and gadgets, buildings and towers.

30

But just like those things have to be designed, so do packages. That’s what we do, says one of the packaging engineers.

31

“How do you decide which package to use?” asks Penelope.

32

“It all depends on what’s inside,” says the packaging engineer.

33

Food must be packaged to stay fresh so it doesn’t make us sick when we eat it.

34

Things like computers and televisions must be packaged to prevent damage to parts.

35

Liquids must be packaged to prevent leaks and to pour easily.

36

Things like napkins and paper towels must be packaged to prevent them from getting wet or dirty.

37

“The best packaging protects the goods, doesn’t cost too much and doesn’t leave behind a lot of waste.”

38

“In addition, the best packaging is recyclable.

Recycling allows us to turn packaging into something else we can use instead of throwing it away.

39

“This is our stop,” says Penelope’s mom. The three friends say farewell to the packaging engineers.

40

Penelope, Paige and Paxton place the hot dogs, buns, pickles, ketchup and mustard in the basket, checking carefully to make sure each package is recyclable.

Penelope’s mom checks the final items off her list.

41

Penelope, Paige and Paxton can’t believe how much fun they had.

42

They love Puzzleland Emporium.

Our Mission Change the trajectory of an entire generation by making STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) easy to teach and easy to learn at the beginning of a child’s educational experience. Our Vision World Domination through STEM Why We Do What We Do For Kids: 80% of adults in STEM fields had at least one parent in the field. This means a huge number of our kids are missing out on opportunities that can be life-changing. For Teachers: Classroom teachers face unprecedented challenges to meet expectations and standards. Teachers need time-saving resources that enable them to make small shifts in their classroom lessons to drive STEM interest and create a STEM mindset. For Our Nation: We’re losing the battle. Thirty years ago, 40% of the world’s scientists and engineers came from the U.S. Today, it’s 15%. STEM fields are where the well-paying jobs are— and will be—in the global economy.
