HOO’s PARENTING
video game detox At some point, most parents make a decision to allow their kids to join the online world by giving them access to a tablet, computer, or video gaming system. However, some parents are noticing that for their kids, video gaming becomes an obsession. It has long been theorized that video gaming can be addictive, and a recently published scientific study has confirmed it. A brain imaging study found that after playing a video game for about 30 minutes, there were increased levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine in the part of the brain responsible for controlling impulses and regulating actions. Dopamine provides a good feeling when released in the brain. This helps explain why some kids become so addicted to video games that they even lose touch with reality.
HERE ARE SOME STEPS TO TAKE TO PREVENT YOUR CHILD FROM DEVELOPING A FULL BLOWN ADDICTION TO VIDEO GAMES.
1. Don’t introduce gaming to young kids. Wait until they are mature enough to understand the limits you are setting and why. 2. Limit access to video games, smart phones, and tablets and keep them out of your child’s bedroom. 3. Don’t bend the rules on time limits. Have your child step away from the game the minute time is up, no matter where he is in the game. 4. Watch for warning signs, like your child becoming aggressive or depressed when access to the video game is denied, and take action if needed to prevent a full blown addiction.
Detoxing a child strongly addicted to video games can be difficult. The best way to start is by completely taking away the video gaming systems or apps for about 4 to 6 weeks. During this time period, help guide your child towards other activities he may be interested in, such as a new team sport or a youth group where he can socialize with other kids. This will help him see there is life outside gaming and allow him to start to build new friendships.
player online gaming can be especially addictive and may need to stay off-limits. Enforcing your rules can be rather difficult in today’s world, where it seems it is impossible to keep your child separated from electronics in daily life. For this reason, teaching him to regulate himself and live with electronics without falling back into the pattern of excessive gaming is important.
Some parents find their kids are so strongly addicted that despite their best efforts, they cannot separate After the ‘detox’ period, you will need to decide if it is their child from gaming. In such cases, parents should appropriate to let your child return to electronics and ask their child’s doctor for a referral for professional gaming on a limited basis. If so, establish ground rules help. Counseling can help identify issues like depression for using computers and other electronics that could or low self-esteem that may make kids prone to video be used for gaming. Set strict specific time limits for game addiction and provide a treatment plan for the computer use and any gaming you do allow, and use video game addiction that includes resolving those parental controls to block any online gaming you don’t issues. want your child participating in. TYPES OF
WATER FILTERS Buying bottled water over tap water can get expensive for your family. The good news is, there are several water filtering solutions for your home that filter out chemicals, like chlorine, which is a necessary part of the water purification process but affects taste. PITCHER WATER FILTERS: These filters use an activated granular carbon filter that has to be replaced regularly. The initial investment is low compared to other filtering solutions. But if you use your pitcher often, things could get pricey. The faucet mount granular carbon filters have the same issue with filter replacement. This filters chlorine, but will not filter contaminants from untreated water, so it is not appropriate to use when a ‘boil water’ advisory has been issued or to treat water from a lake or spring when camping. COUNTER TOP SOLID BLOCK CARBON FILTER: These filtering systems use gravity to filter water, which is manually poured into the top chamber of the filter and then flows through a solid block carbon filter. This filtering system initially costs
HOO’s tips more than a pitcher filter, but the filters do not need frequent changing. Also, this type of filter does not require electricity and can filter out harmful contaminants from untreated water, so it is appropriate for a ‘boil water’ advisory or to take camping. UNDER THE COUNTER REVERSE OSMOSIS (RO): These filtering systems use a membrane to filter water and typically have a holding tank underneath the sink and a spigot mounted on top. This type of system is effective in removing contaminants but also removes natural minerals, which you will then need to replace in your water. One option is to add an after-market step that replaces the trace minerals, or you can add mineral tablets to it before drinking. UNDER THE COUNTER MULTI-STAGE FILTER SYSTEM:
There are also under the counter systems that combine several filter types and are rather expensive due to the cost of the system plumbing changes. Also, the system is a permanent fixture, so you can’t take it with you when you move. The advantages to this type of system are that it probably already includes a stage for adding back in trace minerals removed by RO, it does not take up counter space, and is very effective at removing

Recommending the Best Books for Children and Teens By Gerry P. Smith
Books that are Worth the Wait Most parents will agree that learning patience is one of the most challenging things for a kid to master. Whether it’s watching the clock for a play date, counting the days until vacation, or waiting anxiously for cookies to cool – kids know what patience is. They just tend to have it in short supply. The following titles explore the practice of patience (from both sides of the virtue), giving young readers a humorous perspective of the rewards of waiting.
Treat
By Mary Sullivan (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt)
Awakened by the scent of something to eat, a pup springs up from slumber and into action with just one thing on his mind. Following his nose, he finds his family toddler snacking on cereal. Maybe the cereal is his treat? He waits, but is disappointed to see the cereal eaten by the little girl (and her toy shark). Trembling with anticipation, the pup explores every room and every family member in search of a treat. Just when he’s about to lose his mind waiting for a delicious treat, he finally hears the word he’s been waiting for. Capturing the nervous tension that comes with waiting for something special to happen, Sullivan’s less-than-patient pup promises to be a favorite picture book pal.
Ready Rabbit Gets Ready By Brenna Maloney (Viking / Penguin)
When Momma’s voice calls through the door that it’s time to get ready, Ready Rabbit is off to a slow start. Momma’s voice keeps calling for him to get ready, as he gradually moves toward getting dressed. But even the task of choosing the right clothes (capes, sidekick masks, or underwear?) can slow the whole thing down. With every possible distraction and delay in the way, will Ready Rabbit every be ready? An ideal illustration of patience from the other side, readers get a front row seat to the trials of parents who wait (and wait) for their kids to get ready to go.
I’ll Wait, Mr. Panda By Steve Antony (Scholastic)
Armed with apron, bowl and spoon, Mr. Panda is clearly getting ready to cook something special. His curious friends are quick to inquire about what Mr. Panda is making. As he tells each friend that it’s a surprise and they must wait and see, every friend declares they will not wait and they leave. But as each impatient friend walks away, a small penguin constantly chimes in with “I’ll wait, Mr Panda.” The reader and the dedicated penguin are in for a big surprise indeed, when Mr. Panda’s effort produces an enormous reward for someone with enough patience.

HOO’s PARENTING In today’s world, forming romantic relationships and dating are no longer reserved for the high school years. In addition, social media and a trend towards group dates, where pairs of teens go out together, have changed the traditional meaning of dating. It may be tempting to just reject the rather frightening notion of your tween dating and avoid bringing up the topic at all. However, the ages of 10 - 12 are a perfect time to start discussing the topics of love, dating and romantic relationships, even if you do not intending on allowing your tween to date yet. Kids this age still look to their parents for advice and guidance. This is your opportunity to lay a foundation of values, rules, and boundaries that can help lead to building healthy relationships in the later teen years and into adulthood. Start the conversation with your tween by asking questions. Many parents don’t realize their tween has feelings for anyone because the exclusive romantic relationship has been mostly a result of communicating through social media. If you see signs in social media that your tween is becoming romantically involved, use the opportunity to ask her about the relationship. If your child does not seem to have a romantic interest in anyone, start a discussion by saying like ‘I have noticed a lot of discussion about boys among your friends. Is there anyone you are interested in?’
TWEEN DATING Here are some essential points to cover with your tween. • Ask her about her feelings and be respectful of them. To your tween, the feelings of love are serious business. Your tween wants to discuss her feelings with you and get your guidance on how to handle falling in love. • Set expectations. Lay out the ground rules for your tween about what is appropriate behavior. For example, you might tell your tween she can hold hands but kissing is off limits. Also, let her know you will be monitoring her social media accounts for any inappropriate behavior. Cover the basic rules of healthy relationship building, such as being considerate of the feelings of others. • Rules for group dates. Group dates for tweens should be chaperoned by an adult. Discuss this with her, and let her know that you will have to meet her date first before she is allowed to go out with him. Even if you are not yet allowing your tween to go out on group dates, laying down the household rules early can prevent conflict later.

HOO’s CRAFTY SHRINKY DINK
HANDPRINT KEYCHAINS Thanks to shrink plastic, now we can carry a little piece of our sweet babes with us on the daily with these charming DIY handprint keychains!
DIRECTIONS Paint child’s entire hand, thoroughly, and press firmly onto the plastic. If it’s not perfect print, no worries, wipe it off with alcohol and a napkin, and redo it. Let the paint dry completely. Then, flip the plastic over and add your kiddo’s name, age, or year to the other side with a Sharpie. Or let them write it! For a frosted look, do the print on the rough side and name on the shiny side. Once the print is dry, cut it out and punch a hole in between the middle/ring fingers, then set on your parchment with the paint side up. Preheat oven to 325°F and bake 2-3 minutes until the plastic gets mostly flat again. If it’s still a little wrinkly, quickly flatten with a spatula. Then add your ring and put it on a key chain. Add a coat of clear Mod Podge to help it last!

how much water does a baby need? Since most of the country is on its way to the sweltering summer heat and temperatures, you know, the ones well into the upper 90’s and even over 100 degrees. I guess with all things considered, I can understand parents’ concerns about giving their babies water. It seemed like a strange question to me when I first started hearing, “Dr. Sue, how much water does my baby need to drink every day?” I know I am continuing to talk about staying hydrated during the heat wave, but we are really talking about those children and adults who are spending time outdoors, especially when involved in physical activity. I have actually been telling parents with newborns that there is really no reason to take that sweet new baby outside for any length of time. I think it is too hot to enjoy being outside, and an infant doesn’t miss going to the playground like a 2 or 3 year old would. But, when you have young children, you have to get out (or go crazy inside every day), so everyone just suffers through the heat. But while you’re out and about, remember to take your sunscreen and fluids. And if you are going to head out for an hour or two, do it in the morning or later in the evening if at all possible, trying to avoid the hottest part of the day.

So, back to the water and baby question. Infants in the first 6 months are getting fed breast milk or formula which is made up of free water, so therefore a baby is staying hydrated by eating every 2 -3 hours. A baby doesn’t “need” water every day for any particular reason. With that being said, it does not mean that your baby cannot have a bottle of water. This is especially true for a breastfed infant whose mother may have run out for an hour but is coming back to breastfeed. But what if the baby awakens or gets hungry 30 min or so prior to mother getting home. This might be a good time to “stall” by giving the baby a bottle of water, rather than formula. In this case it is fine to use tap water (yes bottled water is not necessary, unless you have a well or something) in a bottle and see if the baby will even take it. Most babies don’t just gulp down 8 ounces of water! If you are out in the heat with an infant, just remember to feed them every 2 – 3 hours and make sure they have nice drool in their mouths and wet diapers. If you are concerned about hydration, take along a bottle of water for both you and your baby. You will probably need it more than your baby!

Herb Garden
Herbs are low maintenance plants to grow that not only add some spice to your summer dinner table, but also have many health benefits. Herbs grow best when they get at least 4 hours of sun a day and are planted in well-drained soil. The intense afternoon sun can be too much for some herbs, so you may want to place your herb garden where the plants receive their 4 hours of sun from 9 am to 12 pm. Here are some summer herbs that are easy to grow and will make good additions to your summer garden. BASIL: This is a plant that does not require much care, is a good source of fiber, and has anti-inflammatory properties that help clear skin blemishes. It adds a delicious flavor to soups and pasta dishes. Plant basil seedlings about 12 inches apart and keep plants watered during any dry periods during the hot summer.
ROSEMARY: This herb has a pleasant aroma and loves the sunshine. In your garden, give it about a 3 or 4 foot space to grow. You can cut stems at any time to use in the kitchen. Rosemary contains a compound that researchers have shown to fight cancer cells. In addition, rosemary is often used to season meat, and, in one study, rosemary helped prevent the formation of cancer causing compounds called HCA when added to meat that was being grilled. PARSLEY: This herb is sometimes used just as a garnish but studies have confirmed that it can inhibit breast cancer cell growth, making it a good addition to your daily recipes. THYME: This herb is a delicious addition to almost any dish and has been traditionally used as a remedy for respiratory problems and for antiseptic purposes. Plant seedlings about 9 inches apart. Water enough to keep the soil from being dry but don’t overwater. Thyme has a pleasant aroma and produces pretty white flowers.

SCIENCE IS CHILD’S PLAY!
29
Exploration through play is an easy and accessible way for kids to really get a firsthand feel for these fields of study. Trying out basic chemistry, physics and science gives children a real understanding of principles that shape the world around them. The following recommendations help small hands open doors to big learning.
Glowing Chemistry
(Thames & Kosmos)
Young minds are most ready to absorb knowledge that they can observe directly. Some of the coolest chemical reactions in science occur right before their eyes with the Glowing Chemistry kit. With over 22 experiments to try, kids quickly become the masters of creating chemical luminescence, making things that glow. From test tube reactions that generate eerie blue light to making vegetables glowin-the-dark, the full-color Glowing Chemistry Guide and experiment tools simply illuminate the science of chemiluminescence.
Solar Balloon
(Tedco)
Measuring over fifty feet in length with a diameter exceeding two feet, simply running with this balloon open can fill it with air needed to inflate it. Once sealed, the black, ultra-light material slowly absorbs the sunlight which heats the air inside the balloon. As warm air is less dense than cool air, the behemoth balloon will slowly begin to levitate after a couple of hours in the sun. The included guide introduces the science in play, including convection, thermodynamics, the Bernoulli Principle and more. Get the biggest effect from the smallest effort with this massive demonstration of the sun’s power!
Zometool Crazy Bubbles
(Zometool)
Scientific principles, art and geometry collide in this captivating set from Zometool. Using some of the 52 struts and nodes, kids can assemble an amazing variety of three-dimensional constructs. When the construct is dipped in bubble solution, what emerges is a demonstration of surprising new geometry formed by bubbles. Cubes, sheets, and spiral bubble forms are just a few of the translucent structures revealed in each new framework. Additionally, these bubble forms can be tweaked and experimented with using breath and wet fingers. Moving far beyond the typical spherical bubble, this kit reveals whole new dimensions of bubble building.
