HOPE HAVEN IS A REGISTERED 501(C)(3) NON-PROFIT SERVING THE COMMUNITY LOCATED IN MURINDI, RWANDA. BY LOVING AND INVESTING IN THE PEOPLE OF RWANDA, WE PROVIDE HOPE THAT EMPOWERS RWANDANS TO MOVE BEYOND THE PAST, BREAK THE CYCLE OF POVERTY AND RISE UP ECONOMICALLY, INTELLECTUALLY, AND SPIRITUALLY AS AN EDUCATED PEOPLE. WE STARTED WITH A PIECE OF EMPTY LAND TEACHING STUDENTS IN A TENT, UNDER A TREE AND IN AN OLD HOUSE. TO DATE, WE HAVE COMPLETED A NURSERY BUILDING WITH BATHROOMS, ONE OF SIX PRIMARY SCHOOL BUILDINGS WITH BATHROOMS, A COMPUTER SERVER ROOM, A SERVER ROOM AND ADMINISTRATICE OFFICES, DORMITORY, KITCHEN, FIVE TOTAL CABINS FOR THE GUEST LIVING QUARTERS, AN INVALUABLE AND NECESSARY WELL FOR FRESH WATER, AND A SEPTIC SYSTEM. WE HAVE NATIONALLY APPROVED ARCHITECTURAL PLANS FOR THE NEXT BUILDINGS TO BE CONSTRUCTED AS PART OF THE HOPE HAVEN CAMPUS. WE CURRENTLY HAVE 210 STUDENTS ENROLLED IN OUR SCHOOL AND WE PROVIDE DAILY JOBS FOR OVER 100 FAMILIES IN THE COMMUNITY ON OUR CAMPUS. WHAT WAS ONCE ONE OF THE POOREST COMMUNITIES IN ALL OF RWANDA IS NOW A HAVEN OF HOPE FOR HUNDREDS OF FAMILIES.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE... WE ARE GOING TO CONTINUE TO PROVIDE JOBS FOR MURINDI, UNITE THIS COMMUNITY WITH OPPORTUNITIES, AND EDUCATE THE CHILDREN AND ADULTS. WE PLAN TO COMPLETE FIVE MORE PRIMARY BUILDINGS, A SCHOOL MEETING HALL, ANOTHER KITCHEN, AND MORE BATHROOMS ON THE HOPE HAVEN CAMPUS. WE ARE TAKING EACH STEP CAREFULLY AND PRAYERFULLY AS PART OF COMPLETING AND SUSTAINING THE ENTIRE HOPE HAVEN VISION. AFTER THE GENOCIDE IN 1994 RWANDA WAS TURNED UPSIDE DOWN. THE COUNTRY’S INSTABILITY LED TO A DEMOLISHED ECONOMY. MAJOR STEPS ARE BEING TAKEN BY THE RWANDA GOVERNMENT TO REHABILITATE THE NATION’S ECONOMY BY MULTIPLYING SUSTAINABLE JOBS WITHIN THE COUNTRY AND STRIVING TO EXPORT GOODS.

E D U C AT I O N & T E C H N O L O G Y TODAY RWANDA HAS ONE OF THE FASTEST GROWING ECONOMIES IN AFRICA. THE ECONOMIC GROWTH HAS SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED THE PERCENTAGE OF THE POPULATION LIVING IN POVERTY AND THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING OF THE GOVERNMENT’S TWENTY YEAR PLAN. TO SUSTAIN THE CURRENT PROGRESS, THERE MUST BE GOOD EDUCATION AVAILABLE FOR THE PEOPLE OF RWANDA. THIS IS WHERE WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE. BY EDUCATING, WE ARE HELPING TO TRANSFORM RWANDAN FAMILIES, ENHANCE THE STANDARD OF LIVING FOR A COMMUNITY, ENCOURAGE THE ECONOMIC GROWTH OF THE NATION AND FACILITATE OVERALL STABILITY FOR THE FUTURE OF RWANDA BY PROVIDING EDUCATED AND TECHNOLOGY SAVVY CHILDREN AND ADULTS WITH SKILLS APPROPRIATE FOR FUTURE EMPLOYMENT. WE HAVE COMPUTER LABS PROVIDED BY DONATIONS AND A SOFTWARE GRANT FROM MICROSOFT. LEARNING TO USE TECHNOLOGY WILL RESULT IN STUDENTS HAVING THE SKILLS NECESSARY FOR WORKING IN THE MODERN WORLD AND BECOMING PART OF THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY BY BROADENING THEIR HORIZONS.

RWANDAN GENOCIDE

THE RWANDAN GENOCIDE LEFT FAMILIES AND AN ENTIRE COUNTRY TORN APART. IN THE COURSE OF 100 DAYS FROM APRIL 6 TO JULY 16, 1994, NEARLY ONE MILLION TUTSIS AND SOME MODERATE HUTUS WERE MASSACRED IN THE RWANDAN GENOCIDE.

THIS LEFT TENS OF THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN AS ORPHANS. FAMILY MEMBERS TURNED ON EACH OTHER, IN ORDER TO SAVE THEIR OWN LIVES.

CLOSE FRIENDS & NEIGHBORS BECAME CRUEL PERPETRATORS OF HATE CRIMES. WHERE THERE ONCE HAD BEEN LOVE, HATRED GREW AND DESTROYED EVERY HINT OF TRUST. DEEP BETRAYAL SWEPT THROUGH RWANDA IN 1994, LEAVING WHAT SEEMED A FOREVER BROKEN SOCIETY. BUT WHERE THERE IS DARKNESS, THERE IS GRACE TO OVERCOME IT. MILLIONS OF RWANDANS HAVE OVERCOME THE UNTHINKABLE IN ORDER TO REBUILD A NATION, PRAISED AS A MODEL OF RECONCILIATION.

“GOD HAS PLANTED FORGIVENESS AND RECONCILIATION IN THE HEARTS OF RWANDANS, LIKE NO OTHER PLACE THAT I HAVE EVER WITNESSED. IT IS THIS POWERFUL TESTIMONY AND THESE AMAZING PEOPLE THAT IMPRESSED ON MY HEART, THAT THIS WAS MY PLACE TO SERVE.” -HOPE HAVEN FOUNDER, SUSAN HOLLERN

“I WAS ABLE TO EXPERIENCE RWANDAN CULTURE AND EXPERIENCE THE LACK OF BITTERNESS IN A PEOPLE WHO HAD SUFFERED SO MUCH. IT WAS THIS INCREDIBLE POSITIVE SPIRIT OF HOPE THAT RESULTED IN MY FEELING A STRONG EMOTIONAL CONNECTION WITH THE PEOPLE AND THEIR STORIES OF PAIN AND SURVIVAL THAT ARE COMMON THROUGHOUT RWANDA. IT WAS THEN THAT GOD GAVE ME THE VISION TO START HOPE HAVEN AS A PLACE WHERE THE PEOPLE WOULD FEEL SAFE, HAVE HOPE FOR A BETTER FUTURE THROUGH EDUCATION AND SOCIAL CHANGE.”

-HOPE HAVEN FOUNDER, SUSAN HOLLERN
