NIIT’s coming to Rwanda gives boost to ICT skills

W

ith the world’s ever changing business model, technology is gradually taking center stage in different aspects of life. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has awakened us to rethink on the relevance of technology. Physical presence at work was no longer a prerequisite during the lockdown that extended for some days except essential services granted permission to run activities respecting instituted health guidelines. Indeed, new applications accepting cashless payments were developed enabling people to place orders from their homes, hence reducing the spread of the virus from contaminated objects. This would not have been possible without technology know-hows and shows how much we need to invest in the sector and promote ICT skills considering the role it plays in our daily lives whereby public , private partnerships is crucial. To make it ideal, we need credible partners promoting skills development initiatives like the National Institute for Information Technology (NIIT), an Indian leading IT firm

BANK OF KIGALI | BUSINESS

Bank of Kigali, YEGO Innovision Ltd launch first batch of brand-new taxi cabs in Rwanda daily basis. This data was then worked on by the team at the Bank of Kigali, who then worked out the repayment tenure and monthly repayment. Transport facilities need to be available and conveniently offer world-class experience as Rwanda gradually becomes a hub for conferences and events. By offering this facility, we are confident that as more taxi drivers acquire these cars, we will be contributing to making Rwanda a tourism hub through convenient transport,” said Dr. Diane Karusisi, the CEO of Bank of Kigali.

B

ank of Kigali (BK) has officially inaugurated car loans to taxi cab drivers whereby drivers utilizing Intelligent Connected Fare Meters (ICFM) conveniently have started receiving brand new cars. The financing is part of the partnership between BK, Yego Innovision Ltd (the provider of Yegocabs and YegoMoto technologies), RwandaMotor and taxi cab drivers. During the inaugural ceremony of the partnership that took place on Tuesday 28th 2020, three drivers received Suzuki Ertigas with seven seats provided by RwandaMotor at affordable price. The Ertigas give a mileage of 16km per liter which is roughly double of what the drivers got from their old cars. The new vehicles require minimal maintenance and adhere to the latest emission standards.

She also reiterated commitment to support more drivers with proven transactions of their revenues. Each of the new cars stands at Rwf 15 million to be repaid within 6 years at 16% interest rate. The excited Papias Fikiri, one of beneficiaries who has been driving for 12 years urged fellow drivers on discipline to maintain a good reputation. “I am overwhelmed with joy for the new car. I have never dreamt of getting my own but the partnership has made it possible. Discipline and appropriate use of fare meter was among considerations to select me among drivers qualifying for the first batch of BK financing,” he said. The CEO of BK, Dr. Diane Karusisi expressed optimism that it will give boost to Rwanda’s ambition of becoming a tourism hub. “This was made possible because of the Meter fitted in the taxi cabs. With the Meter in Yegocabs, Yego Innovision was able to record every trip and revenue generated by the three drivers on a 22 HM www,hope-mag.com

“Old cars leave a negative image to transport sector, incurs much expenses for fuel consumption and maintenance. The launch of brand new taxi cabs with zero kilometer is a commendable milestone and will enable drivers to save enough. We call upon all taxi cab drivers to get an inspiration from the three, respect Government’s regulations, embrace cashless payments and Yegocabs technology and come to us for financial support. We want to contribute to the development of public transport so that passengers feel comfortable smart cars. At BK we want to transform Rwandans lives and help drivers to run income generating activities smoothly,” assured Karusisi. The CEO of Yego Innovision Ltd, Karavnir Singh thanked drivers receiving cars from the

The idea should be given great relevance as new cars don’t pollute the air and aligns with Government’s plan to reduce polluting emissions. We can root on this partnership to extend it to other transport sub- sectors,” he said.

“We introduced the idea of buying new cars to drivers and convinced them that they can make it if they efficiently utilize provided meters. We would not have succeeded without BK financing and RwandaMotor. With the introduction of brand new cars, we are refreshing the entire taxi cab fleet so that passengers can enjoy improved services,” he said.

RwandaMotor has promised a tailor-made after sales and support package to keep the taxis in good condition. Deo Muvunnyi, the Senior Manager in charge of Transport Licensing at Rwanda Utility and Regulatory Authority (RURA) extolled partners who made the provision of new cars possible. “We are delighted for the partnership complying with Government’s National Public Transport Policy and Strategy

The Managing Director of RwandaMotor Ltd, Yanick Camerman highlighted that inaugurating the first batch of brand new taxi cabs under the partnership will give the idea to many others to visit BK for financing and Yego Innovision to realize the project. “We will be there as representatives of Suzuki to continue negotiating with SUZUKI to reduce the price as much a possible and give that opportunity to many drivers,” he assured.

www,hope-mag.com HM 23

So far, there are 1147 functioning taxi cabs in Kigali. The average taxi is 22 years old and unfortunately, most of them are not in good condition. These old taxis pollute the environment, consume more fuel and cost more for maintenance. This leaves taxi cab drivers earning less than they should. COVID-19 has had a severe impact on many businesses and the transport sector is no exception. With limited tourism activities, people working from home adhering to instituted health regulations, revenues for Taxi cabs have fallen by over 70%.

first batch for discipline and hard work that lead them to the milestone and hailed BK for the support which is a beginning of fruitful collaboration.

He assured continued collaboration so that import duties can be exempted for new cars considering their contribution to the country’s development. According to figures from RURA, taxi cabs occupy 3.2% of Rwanda’s transport sector, while motorcycles and buses respectively take 13% and over 83%.
