Why SULFO sanitizers stand-out Rwanda confirmed the first case of Covid-19 on 14th March 2020. Subsequently, the Ministry of Health urged the public to take precautionary measures to prevent further spreading of the virus. Hand washing and sanitizing have been identified among the best measures in curbing the spread of COVID-19 pandemic. Other health guidelines include respecting social distancing and wearing of face mask. A hand sanitizer containing at least 70 per cent of alcohol is recommended because the amount of alcohol can kill a virus. Considering the urgent and increased demand of hand sanitizers; many companies took undue advantage of the spiked market demand for the product to sell substandard sanitizers at higher prices. The latter saw Rwanda Foods and Drugs Authority (Rwanda FDA) cautioning such merchants and suspended manufacturers producing substandard hand sanitizers that posed a serious risk to the people’s health. As the world strives to defeat the pandemic that has put the economy at a downturn, individuals, public and private institutions are strongly encouraged to adhere to preventive measures to counter effects of the pandemic. Considering the nature of its business, SULFO RWANDA INDUSTRIES LTD as the largest manufacturer of sanitizers and soaps has not been left behind supporting the cause to bridge the gap and continues to take giant strides to fighting COVID-19 pandemic.

Concerting efforts across all sectors to come up with innovative practices is key towards minimizing impact of the pandemic and returning to normalcy. With ongoing efforts, the Government of Rwanda is gradually recording reduced Covid-19 cases due to different measures instituted. However, these efforts should not be taken for granted. It is a good opportunity to consolidate gains. Let us be watchful, use quality products and respect other health guidelines to defeat Covid-19. SULFO products are ideal to help us along the journey.

KCB Bank Rwanda Plc has launched a mobile banking service dubbed “M-Banki” that will enable noncustomers to open a bank account using their mobile phones, eliminating the need to visit a branch. A first of its kind in the market, the solution has been created to ensure that the unbanked population in Rwanda has easy access to financial services. “The days of conventional account opening are a thing of the past. Typically, a potential financial services consumer is timid when considering joining a bank. Many look at the process of opening a bank account as an inconvenience. When we fall sick, we are very much concerned about our failing health and make all possible attempts for quick recovery. However, complex processes to go through, waiting for other patients with most critical conditions and queuing before consultation among other stumbling blocks delays time for medical attention. Having actors in the health sector to deal with all non-emergency cases leaving critical medical cases to be handled through physical presence would be of great significance to boost the quality of health care. Such services are mostly very important during Covid-19 pandemic which has caused unprecedented effects to socio-economic welfare of the society at large requiring a wide spectrum of proactive approaches across all sectors to mitigate its effects and move on.
During this pandemic, people are advised to avoid unnecessary movements, respect all health guidelines including social distancing; washing hands and wearing a face mask to prevent its spread. With strong ambitions to make health care services accessible to everyone, Babyl Health is committed and continues to help Rwandans overcome those challenges with time and costefficient services and helps the society to limit their direct contacts. Babyl Health is Rwanda’s first and leading digital healthcare service provider. Bank of Kigali, I&M Bank Rwanda get EUR 10.7 million grant to mitigate Covid-19 effects on employment
country: Bank of Kigali Plc. and I&M Bank (Rwanda) Plc. With their help, the project supports SMEs - the job engine of the Rwandan economy - across all industries to fund jobs, working capital and support credit service for SMEs,” he said. Dr. Diane Karusisi, CEO of Bank of Kigali Plc commended the facility shading light to preserving jobs in the SME sector considering it a very good complement to Government’s and BK’s efforts to stimulate the economic recovery. “We believe that when our SME sector is assisted to weather this crisis, it will continue to be uniquely positioned in the transformation of our economy, providing off-farm jobs and supporting the livelihoods of many,” she said.
BANK OF KIGALI | FINANCE
Robin Bairstow, Chief Executive Officer of I&M Bank (Rwanda) Plc expressed delight for the partnership between IFE and I&M Bank highlighting that the grant complements the efforts of the Rwandan Government and the Bank to provide assistance to the sector, especially maintaining employment.

Bank of Kigali Plc. (BK) and I&M Bank Rwanda Plc. (IMBR) have launched a project with the Investing for Employment (IFE), a subsidiary of German Development Bank (KfW) to support the preservation of employment by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Rwanda against the effects of the Covid-19 Pandemic. Under the project, the German Government, through the KfW IFE, will provide a total grant funding of EUR 10.7 million, which both banks will deploy to selected SMEs in their portfolios suffering from the negative effects of Covid-19 related restrictions. Each bank will supplement these grants by providing additional credit relief to their pre-selected SME clients from own sources. This combination of measures aims to
enable the beneficiary SMEs to maintain the largest share of their employees and to support them in their economic recovery. In total, IFE, Bank of Kigali Plc. and I&M Bank Plc. expect to be able to support over 400 SMEs across a wide spectrum of important economic sectors (such as hospitality, construction, education, logistics or health) through the project. The interventions of both banks combined are set to contribute to the preservation of almost 10,000 jobs in SME’s directly, and a countless number in other small enterprises (suppliers etc.) indirectly. Covid-19 has resulted into economic downturn, affected various businesses and left quite a number of employees losing jobs.

As part of responses to Covid-19 effects, the Rwandan government has set up the Economic Recovery Plan which gives clear directions on how Rwanda will be dealing with the pandemic and its economic consequences. Speaking at a virtual kick-off meeting today, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Rwanda, Dr. Thomas Kurz said explained that substantive action is necessary to help preserve employment, production capacities and supply chain linkages and support the recovery in light of the massive socio-economic impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic in Rwanda.
“SMEs are a source of growth, jobs and innovation and create economic dynamism. That is why we have built a strong SME portfolio through Financial Skills’ Workshops offered to clients to mitigate their businesses’ financial risks during the pandemic. We expect our customers to stay afloat and continue progressing steadily even after the COVID-19 Pandemic. In the past, we have seen businesses grow from SME to Corporate profiles and this new grant will make it possible for our clients to maintain that growth,” he reminisced. Mr. Andreas Holtkotte, one of the Executive Directors of KFW IFE extolled the partnership IFE’s Corona Response Programme and emphasized that the institution is proud to have professional and reputable partners in order to implement the allocated funds. “The project aims at supporting
SMEs which are known to be the backbone and job engine of the Rwandan economy. The partnership with the banks enables us to deploy our results-based grant support in a targeted manner to SMEs which hold the potential for poverty reduction and development of African economies,” he said. KfW has been a longstanding partner in development of the Government of Rwanda. Today, its work focuses on three key areas: decentralization and good governance, sustainable economic development, and regional energy integration. The support of the private sector, in particular in export promotion, is one important singular project, where KfW, through the Rwandan Export Growth Fund, also works with Rwandan banks, such as Bank of Kigali and I&M Bank. The Director of KfW‘s Office in Rwanda, Ms. Charlotte Povel who also took part of the virtual event announced a new rapid upscaling project in co-operation with the Rwandan Development Bank, to further enhance support to exporting Rwandan SMEs. Ms. Povel thanked banks, Bank of Kigali Plc. and I&M Bank (Rwanda) Plc. for their co-operation in the IFE project. “This shows that Rwandan banks assume responsibility for the economic recovery of Rwanda and for sustaining and fostering jobs in the SME sector. It also shows, how international development and the domestic financial sector can work hand in hand to fight Covid-19 and its related effects,” she explained.
