hat is the pancreas? The pancreas is an organ is located in the upper abdomen, behind the stomach, and it produces a fluid that contains enzymes that participate in the digestion and absorption of food. The fluid is transported to the small intestine through a duct called chole ducts. The pancreas also mediates the glucose leves through the production of insulin.

What is pancreatitis? It is the sudden inflammation of the pancreas caused by the activation of digestion enzymes within itself before they are released to the intestine. In severe cases, the pancreas destroys itself in a process called necrosis which results in a generalized inflammatory reaction that may affect other vital organs. Pancreatitis more frequently affects men.

What are the causes of acute pancreatitis? The two most frequent causes are stones in the biliary duct (cholelithiasis, 80%) and excessive alcohol consumption. Stones in the gallbladder may migrate to the biliary duct and obstruct the release of the pancreatic substances into the intestine. Alcohol has a direct toxic effect and may also result in chronic pancreatitis. Other causes may include some medications, significant increase in blood fat levels, increase in blood calcium, some surgeries, obstructions in the pancreatic duct, and physical trauma to the abdomen. In approximately 20% of the patients, a cause if not found.

What are the symptoms? It is frequently manifested as a continuous and intense pain mainly located in the upper part of the abdomen. Pain may be accompanied by nausea and vomit. It can worsen in a matter of minutes after a meal, especially if the food high on fats. The pain can increase in severity or frequency over time.

People with pancreatitis often look sick and present fever, nausea, vomit, sweating, and jaundice (yellow coloration of the skin and eyes).

How is pancreatitis diagnosed? Blood tests typically reveal elevated pancreatic enzymes (amylase and lipase). However, a CAT scan is necessary to confirm the diagnosis.

The CAT scan may provide a way to visualize the level of necrosis in the pancreas along with other abdominal complications. And abdominal ultrasound allows physicians to see the presence of stones in the gallbladder, but generally inflammation of the pancreas obstructs the view of the pancreas. An MRI may be an alternative to a CAT scan if there is an allergy to IV contrast, in case of kidney failure, and if the possibility of a stone in the bile duct

wants to be discarded.

Endoscopic ultrasound is useful for the examination of the pancreas and detect biliary duct stones not seen through other examinations.

What are the complication? Pancreatitis may reappear as a chronic pancreatitis. The probability of return depends on the original cause. Complications may include: kidney failure, syndromes of severe respiratory failure, accumulation of fluid in the abdomen, pseudocysts of the pancreas, or heart failure.

What is the treatment? There is no specific treatment available for pancreatic inflammation. Patients must resort to abundant IV fluids, pain relief medications, and avoiding intake of food by mouth. Mild cases often need no further treatment and recovery generally happens in a matter of a week. Sever cases may require observa-

tion in the intensive care unit to be administered antibiotics in order to combat the infection caused by the pancreatic necrosis, as well as to establish a feeding tube.

In cases where the necrosis becomes infected it is necessary to remove the dead fragment of the pancreas. This procedure used to be performed surgically but can now be done by means of endoscopy.

An Endoscopic Retrograde Pancreatography (ERCP) can be required in order to remove the obstructing stones. Pseudocysts can also be treated.

What is the prognosis? In the majority of the cases inflammation is mild. However, 1 of every 5 cases become severe. Mild cases have a good prognosis and result in complete recovery. Severe cases may be fatal 20% of the time; generally patients with extensive necrosis of the pancreas and failure of vital organs.

Deafness can be caused by several factors and be of different types so a specialist will perform the necessary studies to give the indicated treatment.

The word “deafness” refers to the loss of hearing, a condition that in medicine is known as hearing loss.

“It is a decrease in auditory acuity and can be classified depending on the intensity or depth of that loss, it can be mild, moderate, severe or profound,” said the otolaryngologist, José Luis Salinas González.

He also said that it is one of the most frequent causes of consultation, but fortunately, most of the problems are reversible.

TYPES OF HEARING LOSS CONDUCTIVE AND NEUROSENSORIAL

He noted that conductive hearing loss occurs when the ability of the ear to carry sound to the inner ear is prevented or reduced and can occur through a cerumen plug, an ear infection, which is punctured, by exposure to noise or by the practice of some sport like hunting.

“That acoustic trauma can be corrected if it is treated on time, if not we can not recover it, we have a week to do it,” the doctor explained.

The solution will depend on the case, for example, if the patient has a cerumen plug,

the ear is cleaned; if there is an infection, the deafness will end when the infection is cured; If there is a perforation in the tympanic membrane it is corrected by repairing it.

There are three small bones that connect to the eardrum to amplify sound waves and otosclerosis is a disease that occurs when one of those bones is unable to vibrate freely.

The doctor explained that it is corrected by replacing, by means of an implant, a prosthesis that performs its function.

Sensorineural hearing loss occurs when the snail or nerve is damaged and is not reversible, but fortunately there are few cases of this type.

“This is beneficial for patients that have a hearing loss so they can hear again or so that children who have never heard can develop a language,” he said.

Children from four or six years who have not developed language are candidates for this surgery, however the process to achieve it continues.

“You will have to start a therapy or a learning acceleration process when you already hear noise,” he said.

In adults it is different, if you have never heard anything and did not develop language when the implant is placed you will not have the capacity to recognize and memorize the words.

In adults only applies when the hearing is lost, that is, he had previously had.

There are some congenital disorders that include deafness and congenital complications that prevent some people from being candidates for a cochlear implant.

The otorhinolaryngologist said that the implant that is for life is an expensive device and its price can range between 20 and 25 thousand dollars, without counting the cost of surgery.

AUXILIARY HEARING

It is the most known and common device for deafness, as easy to use as a pair of lenses, according to the doctor.

“Socially it can impact, there are people who do not want them to realize they have a hearing aid, they think it makes them look vulnerable or old, but nowadays there are some that nobody notices,” he said.

He said that the best known are “of the curveta type,” which goes behind the ear, but there is also another one that “is inside the shell,” located in the auricular pavilion and one “placed inside the canal where nobody sees it.”

STUDIES AND ASSESSMENTS

Salinas González commented that when people go to a consultation they perform a study called tonal audiometry, on which hearing is assessed in both ears.

“It measures from 0 to 120 decibels, at a frequency of 500 to 8000 hertz, and based on that we can catalog if a patient has a mild or moderate hearing loss, we are classifying in depth and we can say in what frequency is damaged,” he said.

In hospitals, a control study called otoacoustic emissions is performed to detect hearing problems in newborns.

“The most common study is audiometry, a device that emits sounds at different intensities is used and it is called tonal audiometry, patients are taken to an acoustic booth where a sound is emitted by a hearing aid and the signal is indicated at what frequency what intensity of sound listens,” sentenced.

Then a graph is made where it will be shown if the patient has a normal hearing or with some alteration.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The otolaryngologist José Luis Salinas González said that there are some recommendations that can be carried out to avoid hearing loss.

“In our geographical area there are many maquila companies and they have a security department where the use of hearing protection is required to avoid exposure to a certain intensity of noise during the day,” he said.

People who practice hunting can develop “hunter’s deafness” if they do not use the right hearing aids to protect their hearing.

Perforations for introducing some object in the ear, blows in the ears or a fracture in the base of the skull can also be reasons to lose the hearing.

He stressed that when a patient only has one ear, they should tell the doctor before starting any treatment, as some may represent an important risk to their hearing health.

“There are medications such as aminoglycosides in antibiotics that should be used with reserve, such as amikacin gentamicin, sometimes doctors value the risk because it is the only substance that will cure the patient, put on a scale using the medication with the indicated dose and the patient is explained what the risks are,” he revealed.

La sordera puede ser provocada por varios factores y ser de diferentes tipos por lo que un especialista realizará los estudios necesarios para dar el tratamiento indicado.

“Es una disminución de la agudeza auditiva y se puede clasificar dependiendo, de la intensidad o de la profundidad de esa pérdida, puede ser leve, moderada, grave o profunda”, mencionó el otorrinolaringólogo, José Luis Salinas González.

Dijo también que es una de las causas más frecuentes de consulta, pero afortunadamente, la mayoría de los problemas son reversibles.

TIPOS DE PÉRDIDA AUDITIVA: CONDUCTIVA Y NEUROSENSORIAL

Señaló que la pérdida auditiva conductiva, se da cuando se impide o se reduce la capacidad del oído de conducir el sonido al oído interno y puede presentarse por un tapón de cerumen, una infección del oído, que esté perforado, por exposición a ruido o por la práctica de algún deporte como la cacería.

“Ese trauma acústico puede ser corregible si se atiende en ese momento, después ya no lo podemos recuperar, tenemos una semana para hacerlo”, explicó el médico.

La solución dependerá del caso, por ejemplo, si el paciente tiene un tapón de cerumen, se limpia el oído; si existe una infección, la sordera terminará cuando se cure la infección; si hay una perforación en la membrana timpánica se corrige reparándola.

Existen tres huesos pequeños que se conectan al tímpano para amplificar las ondas sonoras y la otoesclerosis es una enfermedad que se presenta cuando uno de esos huesos es incapaz de vibrar libremente.

El médico explicó que se corrige sustituyendo por medio de un implante, una prótesis que hace su función.

La pérdida auditiva neurosensorial se presenta cuando el caracol o el nervio están dañados y no es reversible, pero afortunadamente se dan pocos casos de este tipo.

Existe una enfermedad que se llama hipoacusia súbita y es la perdida rápida de audición de tipo sensorial.

caracol dejaron de funcionar, como si alguien le desconectara la electricidad o la corriente a una bocina y tenemos una semana para corregir la audición”, advirtió.

Apuntó que ese oído “se está infartando” y si el médico les dice que está un poco inflamado y prescribe un antibiótico en gotas, si no hay mejoría hay que acudir con un especialista.

“No se sabe cual es la causa, puede ser una infección viral o un aumento en la presión arterial”, sentenció.

Hasta hace poco tiempo, no había forma de corregir esta pérdida auditiva, pero ahora con las nuevas tecnologías y avances médicos es una realidad.

“Cuando la pérdida no es tan profunda se le puede indicar al paciente que use un auxiliar auditivo, que solamente son amplificadores de sonido”, comentó.

Manifestó que el sonido en el habla está a 30 decibeles y los auxiliares lo pueden amplificar a 60 o 90 decibeles, existiendo algunos que pueden dar hasta 110 decibeles de sonido.

IMPLANTE COCLEAR

Cuando la pérdida de audición es muy profunda y el auxiliar deja de ser efectivo lo indicado es utilizar un implante coclear, que es un aparato auditivo de alta tecnología que se coloca dentro del oído y transforma las señales acústicas en eléctricas para estimular el nervio auditivo.

“Esto es benéfico para que los pacientes que ya no tienen audición la tengan de nuevo o para que los niños que nunca han escuchado puedan desarrollar un lenguaje”, externó.

Los niños a partir de los cuatro o seis años que no han desarrollado lenguaje son candidatos para esta cirugía, sin embargo, el proceso para lograrlo continúa.

“Tendrá que iniciar una terapia o un proceso de aceleración de aprendizaje cuando

En los adultos es diferente, si nunca ha escuchado nada y no desarrolló lenguaje al colocársele el implante no tendrá la capacidad de reconocer y de memorizar las palabras.

En adultos solamente aplica cuando perdió la capacidad auditiva, es decir, que antes ya la había tenido.

Existen algunos trastornos congénitos que dentro de sus características incluyen la sordera y existen complicaciones congénitas que impiden que algunas personas sean candidatos para un implante coclear.

El otorrinolaringólogo dijo que el implante que es de por vida es un aparato costoso y su precio puede oscilar entre los 20 y 25 mil dólares, sin contar el costo de la cirugía.

AUXILIAR AUDITIVO

Es el aparato más conocido y común para la sordera, tan fácil de usar como un par de lentes, según el médico entrevistado.

“Socialmente puede impactar, hay gente que no quiere que se den cuenta que trae un aparato auditivo, creen que los hace ver

vulnerables o viejos, pero en la actualidad existen algunos que nadie nota”, afirmó.

Expresó que los más conocidos son “de tipo curveta”, que va detrás de la oreja, pero también hay otro que “está dentro de la concha”, situada en el pabellón auricular y uno “colocado dentro del conducto donde nadie lo ve”.

ESTUDIOS Y VALORACIONES

Salinas González comentó que cuando las personas van a consulta les realizan un estudio que se llama audiometría tonal, con el cual se valora la audición en ambos oídos.

“Mide desde 0 hasta 120 decibeles, a una frecuencia desde 500 hasta 8000 hertz, y en base a eso podemos catalogar si un paciente tiene una hipoacusia leve o moderada, vamos clasificando en cuanto a la profundidad y podemos decir en qué frecuencia está dañada”, apuntó.

En los hospitales se realiza un estudio de control que se llama emisiones otoacústicas para detectar problemas auditivos en recién nacidos.

El otorrinolaringólogo José Luis Salinas González dijo que hay algunas recomendaciones que pueden llevarse a cabo para evitar la pérdida de la audición.

“En nuestra área geográfica hay muchas empresas maquiladoras y ellos tienen un departamento de seguridad en dónde se exige el uso de protección auditiva para evitar exponerse a cierta intensidad de ruido durante la jornada”, platicó.

Las personas que practican la cacería pueden desarrollar “sordera del cazador” si no utilizan los audífonos adecuados para proteger su oído.

Perforaciones por introducir algún objeto en el oído, golpes en las orejas o alguna fractura en la base del cráneo también pueden ser motivos para perder la audición.

Destacó que cuando un paciente solamente posee un oído deberá comentárselo al médico antes de iniciar cualquier tratamiento, pues algunos pueden representar un riesgo importante para su salud auditiva.

“Existen medicamentos como los aminoglucósidos dentro de los antibióticos que deben usarse con reserva, como lo son amikacina gentamicina, en ocasiones los médicos valoramos correr el riesgo porque es la única sustancia que va a curar al paciente, se pone en una balanza usar el medicamento con la dosis indicada y se le explica al paciente cuales son los riesgos”, reveló.

By Beatriz Flores Ultrasound in 4D is a technique for imaging that has great growth in obstetrics by allowing to see with great detail and greater definition the face, the features of the spine and feet of the baby, to mention examples.

Dr. Álvaro Gómez Peña, obstetrician gynecologist at the Lancet Clinic, spoke about this procedure and what it offers.

“It has some advantages over the traditional form of 2D, it gives you an idea about the space the baby has in the uterus, it shows you the contour lines of the face for certain malformations and allows us to detect a defect, which facilitates the explanation to parents,” he explained.

The specialist in Fetal Medicine said that it is best to do it between week 25 and 30, because it is at that time that the baby has a good amount of amniotic fluid and can look good.

In addition, the further the pregnancy progresses the space is reduced and it is difficult to appreciate it.

ONE FOR EACH STAGE

Depending on the weeks of pregnancy that the patient has, it will be the ultrasound that must be done, according to the doctor.

The genetic ultrasound or screening of the first trimester is focused on the detection of genetic abnormalities, mainly discarding Down Syndrome, Edwards Syndrome or Turner Syndrome and is

performed between week 11 to 14.

“The risk of preeclampsia is also assessed so that the patient’s pressure is not increased, the risk of premature birth and anatomy, to see that the baby has a normal formation,” he said.

From week 20 to 25 it is recommended to perform anatomical ultrasound, also called structural or morphological, in which the organs are checked in detail, from the head to the feet.

“You can see the brain, the heart, the little mouth, the fingers are counted, everything is checked in detail to see that there is no malformation, the bones are not calcified and they let you see the internal organs well and certify that everything is fine formed,” he said.

He asserted that if it is close to the end of the pregnancy and the patient has not undergone ultrasound or if it has been very superficial, it is advisable to do so.

“As the pregnancy progresses, less is perceived, but there are some malformations that can be seen throughout the pregnancy, even at week 38 or 39, they have to be looked for,” he said.

It is also important because it assesses safety issues such as the amount of amniotic fluid, the position of the baby, its size and how is the placenta, since that is very important for the time of delivery or cesarean section.

TWIN AND MULTIPLE PREGNANCY

These types of pregnancies are considered high risk, since they are different from those of a single type, so surveillance is more frequent and reviews should be carried out more frequently.

“It is very important to say that not all twins are the same, there are twins who have two placentas and those who have only one for both and it is totally different what we see and what we look for in these babies,” he warned.

He commented that usually it is possible to identify well and review in detail each twin, so from the first trimester, in week 14 or 15, the doctor who takes control should ensure in writing what kind of twings are to follow up properly.

El doctor Álvaro Gómez Peña, ginecólogo ginecobstetra de la Clínica Lancet, habló sobre este procedimiento y lo que ofrece.

“Tiene algunas ventajas sobre la forma tradicional que es el 2D, te da una idea acerca del espacio que tiene el bebé en el útero, te muestra las líneas del contorno de la cara para ciertas malformaciones y nos permite detectar algún defecto, lo que facilita la explicación a los padres”, explicó.

El especialista en Medicina Fetal dijo que lo más recomendable es realizarlo entre la semana 25 y 30, pues es en ese tiempo que el bebé tiene una buena cantidad de líquido amniótico y puede verse bien.

Además, entre más avanza el embarazo el espacio se reduce y es difícil apreciarlo.

“El bebé se mueve mucho y tiene suficiente cantidad de grasita para poder ver bien sus facciones porque si lo hacemos a la semana 15 o 16 a veces no están bien definidas porque no tiene suficiente grasita y sobresalen mucho los huesitos”, expresó.

UNO PARA CADA ETAPA

Dependiendo de las semanas de embarazo que tenga la paciente será el ultrasonido que debe realizarse, según el médico.

El ultrasonido genético o tamizaje de primer trimestre va enfocado a la detección de anormalidades genéticas, principalmente descartar Síndrome de Down, Síndrome de Edwards o Síndrome de Turner y se realiza entre la semana 11 a 14.

“También se valora el riesgo de preeclampsia para que no se le vaya a subir la presión a la paciente, el riesgo de parto

prematuro y la anatomía, para ver que el bebito tenga una formación normal”, destacó.

De la semana 20 a 25 se recomienda realizar el ultrasonido anatómico, también llamado estructural o morfológico, en él se revisan con detalle los órganos, desde la cabecita hasta los pies.

“Se ven el cerebro, el corazón, la boquita, se cuentan los dedos, se revisa todo a detalle para ver que no tenga ninguna malformación, los huesitos todavía no están calcificados y te dejan ver bien los órganos internos y certificarse que todo esté bien formado”, apuntó.

Aseveró que si se está cerca del término del embarazo y la paciente no se ha realizado ultrasonidos o si han sido muy superficiales es recomendable hacerlo. “Conforme avanza el embarazo se percibe menos, pero hay algunas malformaciones que se pueden ver durante todo el embarazo aún en la semana 38 o 39 se tienen que buscar”, declaró.

También es importante porque valora cuestiones de seguridad como la cantidad de líquido amniótico, la posición del bebé, su tamaño y cómo está la placenta, ya que eso tiene mucha importancia para el momento del parto o la cesárea.

EMBARAZOS GEMELARES Y MÚLTIPLES

Este tipo de embarazos se consideran de alto riesgo, pues son diferentes a los de tipo único por lo que la vigilancia es más estrecha y deben realizarse revisiones con más frecuencia.

“Es muy importante decir que no todos los gemelos son iguales, hay gemelos que tienen dos placentas y los que tienen una sola para los dos y es totalmente diferente lo que vemos y lo que buscamos en estos bebés”, advirtió.

Comentó que normalmente se logra identificar bien y revisar a detalle a cada gemelo, por lo que desde el primer trimestre, en la semana 14 o 15 el doctor que lleve su control deberá asegurar por escrito qué tipo de gemelos son para llevar un seguimiento adecuado.

UN DULCE O CHOCOLATE ANTES DEL ULTRASONIDO

El doctor Álvaro Gómez Peña opinó que para un ultrasonido genético o anatómico se desea que el bebé se mueva mucho para tener ángulos diferentes y poder revisarlo bien.

El bebé se estimula con la glucosa o el azúcar por lo que les recomendamos que se coman un chocolate 15 o 20 minutos antes del estudio y es importante que no se pongan crema ese día para que se pueda ver mejor la resolución de la imagen”, pidió el médico.

Expresó que algunas pacientes tienen la duda sobre si deben tomar agua antes del ultrasonido, manifestando que sólo es necesario cuando se va a realizar un ultrasonido pélvico y no hay embarazo.

barazo no es necesario, de hecho es mejor tener la vejiga vacía para que no nos estorbe el agua”, expuso.

El ginecobstetra Álvaro Gómez Peña dijo que el ultrasonido 4D permite conocer a fondo al bebé y detectar a tiempo cualquier anormalidad o problema, sin embargo, para que se puedan aprovechar sus beneficios deberá realizarse por un especialista.

“Existen muchas personas en el ámbito de

la medicina que realizan ultrasonidos, como radiólogos, médicos generales, ultrasonografistas, ginecólogos o perinatólogos, lo que importa es que estén calificados, certificados, que tengan experiencia y que se dediquen realmente a diagnostico prenatal”, aclaró.

Combination of drugs could reduce risks of

cardiovascular problems

By Irma Idalia Cerda Monterrey, N. L. The risk of a heart attack and stroke can be reduced by up to 24 percent thanks to the combination of the drugs rivaroxaban and acetylsalicylic acid that were approved in Mexico by Cofepris.

This was announced by medical specialists from the Bayer company to the media on March 5 in Mexico City, who explained that the new therapeutic scheme is based on phase III of the COMPASS study.

Dr. Alejandra Meaney, clinical cardiologist certified by the Mexican Board of Cardiology and Medical Affairs Operation Manager of the Pharmaceuticals Division of Bayer of Mexico, said that the rate of mortality from cardiovascular diseases is increasing, since every four seconds there is a heart attack and every five seconds a cerebral vascular event.

“The first cause of death worldwide, are coronary artery disease or myocardial infarction and this represents great costs for institutions and is even more prevalent than cancer and this is true for all continents, including the Americas.”

She warned that this situation can generate an economic impact in the future because it is expected that it will be more difficult to face the expense of these diseases than diabetes mellitus.

“According to 2012 data, heart diseases are the leading cause of death in Mexican men and women and that has not changed.

“Of the heart diseases two-thirds are explained: by heart attack, followed by diabetes mellitus, but here we must consider that the diabetic patient dies almost usually by myocardial infarction, that is to say that it is basically the same,” Meaney mentioned.

Cardiovascular diseases are a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels,

among which are Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) and Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD), which is caused by atherosclerosis, characterized by the accumulation of plaque (deposits of fat) inside the arteries that cause them to narrow and harden.

For his part, Javier Antezana Castro, clinical and interventional cardiologist, attached to the Coronary Unit of the Cardiology Hospital Century XXI of the IMSS, explained how Coronary Arterial Disea-

se occurs.

“When we talk about CAD, we usually move to a heart attack, to angina; It happens that the coronary arteries that supply the cardiac muscle suffer a reduction in their caliber due to the presence of plaque atherosclerosis, a plaque that is formed from high levels of cholesterol.

“We know that when we have high cholesterol, especially a high-density lipoprotein fraction, these travel in the blood penetrate the inner part of the arteries and form a fat plate causing atherosclerosis,” said the specialist.

He added that the risk factors for developing atherosclerosis are diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, sedentary lifestyle, overweight and smoking.

Regarding Peripheral Arterial Disease, the angiologist and vascular surgeon, Gerardo Peón Peralta, said that every seven minutes, a Mexican loses a leg due to this condition.

“The EAP happens in the arteries of

the legs and this means that the amount of blood that reaches the feet decreases and the oxygenation of the tissues in the lower extremity to levels that begin to manifest first in more nonspecific symptoms.

“But this way, as the tissue dies in some places of the heart when it happens in the coronary arteries, or with a stroke in the brain when it passes into the nervous system, the same happens in the legs there is the danger of losing the leg,” he said.

He stressed that according to INEGI data it is estimated that by 2030, 58 percent of all deaths of Mexicans are a result of complications from the obstruction of the arteries that carry oxygen to any of the tissues.

Doctors agreed that a healthy lifestyle, exercise, balanced diet, not smoking, staying relaxed and in the right weight, along with pharmacological treatment, cardiovascular diseases can be treated successfully.

cardiovasculares Por Irma Idalia Cerda Monterrey, N. L. El riesgo de un ataque cardiaco y un evento vascular cerebral pueden reducirse hasta en un 24 por ciento gracias a la combinación de los fármacos rivaroxabán y ácido aceitilsalicílico que fueron aprobados en México por la Cofepris.

Así lo anunciaron médicos especialistas de la compañía Bayer a los medios de comunicación el pasado 5 de marzo en la Ciudad de México, quienes explicaron que el nuevo esquema terapéutico está basado en el estudio de fase III COMPASS. La doctora Alejandra Meaney, cardióloga clínica certificada por el Consejo Mexicano de Cardiología y Medical Affairs Operation Manager de la División Pharmaceuticals de Bayer de México, destacó que el indice de mortalidad por las enfermedades cardiovasculares va en aumento, ya que cada cuatro segundos se produce un ataque cardiaco y cada cinco segundos un evento vascular cerebral.

“La primera causa de mortalidad a nivel mundial, son las enfermedades arteriales coronarias o el infarto del miocardio y esto representa grandes costos para las instituciones y es más prevalente incluso que el cáncer y esto es cierto para todos los continentes, incluido el continente americano”.

Advirtió que esta situación puede generar un impacto económico en el futuro debido a que se prevé que va a ser más difícil enfrentar el gasto de estas enfermedades, que la diabetes mellitus.

“Según datos del año 2012 las enfermadas del corazón constituyen la primera causa de mortalidad en hombres y mujeres mexicanas y eso no ha cambiado.

“De las enfermedades del corazón dos terceras partes se explican: por ataque cardiaco, seguidas por la diabetes mellitus, pero aquí hay que considerar que el paciente diabético muere casi por lo general por infarto del miocardio, es decir que es básicamente lo mismo” , mencionó Meaney.

Las enfermedades cardiovasculares son un grupo de trastornos del corazón y de los vasos sanguíneos entre las que destacan la Enfermedad Arterial Coronaria (EAC) y la Enfermedad Arterial Periférica (EAP), cuyo origen es la aterosclerosis, caracterizada por la acumulación de placa (depósitos de grasa) dentro de las arterias que provocan que se estre-

chen y endurezcan.

Por su parte, Javier Antezana Castro, cardiólogo clínico e intervencionista, adscrito a la Unidad Coronaria del Hospital de Cardiología del CMN Siglo XXI del IMSS, explicó cómo se produce la Enfermedad Arterial Coronaria.

“Cuando hablamos de la EAC generalmente nos trasladamos a un infarto, a una angina de pecho; sucede que las arterias coronarias que irrigan el músculo cardiaco, sufren un estrechamiento reducción de su calibre por la presencia de una placa arterioesclerosis, una placa que se forma a partir de altos niveles

La enfermedad en sí tiene su origen en la aterosclerosis, un trastorno que se debe a la acumulación de placa (depósitos de grasa) dentro de las arterias.

Destacó que según datos del INEGI se estima que para el 2030 el 58 por ciento todas las defunciones de los mexicanos sean a consecuencia de complicaciones de la obstrucción de las arterias que llevan el oxigeno a cualquiera de los tejidos.

Los médicos coincidieron que el estilo de vida saludable como ejercicio, dieta balanceada, no fumar, mantenerse relajado y en el peso adecuado, junto con el tratamiento farmacológico, las enfermedades cardiovasculares pueden ser tratadas satisfactoriamente.

Mucho se habla de la menopausia, esa etapa en la vida de la mujer en donde se viven grandes cambios fisiológicos y psicológicos, pero ¿qué sucede con los hombres?, ¿les pasa lo mismo?

La respuesta es “sí”, esos cambios inician a partir de los 40 años y reciben el nombre de andropausia.

El especialista en Urología, Rogelio Gómez Loredo, mencionó que consiste en la disminución de hormonas como la testosterona, que se produce en los testículos, lo cual ocasionará que haya un decline en ciertas funciones.

“La testosterona es considerada como la hormona de la juventud, por lo que al ir disminuyendo sus niveles se generan algunos cambios significativos en el paciente que además, van acompañados con la edad”, expuso.

También tiene gran participación en funciones mentales, físicas y bioquímicas, en la modificación de niveles de colesterol y hemoglobina.

Es importante destacar que no es un cambio que se presente de forma inmediata, sino que la evolución se va desarrollando de forma gradual, lento y progresivo.

Quienes se encuentran en esta etapa presentan una disminución en el ritmo de sus actividades, por ejemplo, se vuelven más tranquilos, sedentarios, se retarda el pensamiento y pierden agudeza mental.

También aparecen algunos cambios físicos como la pérdida de tono muscular, flacidez de la piel, caída del cabello y problemas de erección.

TRATAMIENTO

Al presentar los primeros problemas de dis-

función eréctil, se debe acudir lo antes posible con el médico para asignar el tratamiento adecuado y evitar que persista y avance el problema.

El doctor dijo que al paciente se le realizarán exámenes hormonales para verificar sus niveles de testosterona y se le asignará el tratamiento hormonal indicado, además de tratar la disfunción.

También se recetarán multivitamínicos y en caso de que el paciente presente problemas para dormir, que no es muy común según el galeno, le prescribirá lo indicado para ello.

“Deberá cambiar su actividad sexual; el corazón y las arterias ya no bombean la sangre como antes, la erección es más tardada y hay que cambiar la técnica, deberán tomarse más tiempo de juego previo antes de una penetración y eso ayudará a que la erección sea más fuerte”, manifestó.

Dijo también que “a mayor edad hay que añadir testosterona que también tiene su ciclo, no hay que darla en forma permanente porque puede causar problemas, si es una

persona muy mayor se utilizará viagra cada que tenga relaciones”.

ros, así como en la colonia Adriana González (Chispus) en avenida Cuauhtémoc donde mensualmente atienden a más de 300 personas.

Asimismo, aseguró Organista de Oseguera que uno de sus compromisos a través del Sistema DIF Madero, es brindar apoyo a quienes menos tienen y carecen de prestaciones médicas, exhortando a las personas que deseen apoyar en la donación de medicamentos, se acerquen a las oficinas de la dependencia en mención.

Finalmente, informó que los dispensarios médicos del DIF Madero prestan servicio de manera gratuita en un horario de 8:00 a 15:00 horas de lunes a viernes, siempre ejerciendo en el marco del trato digno y amable hacia el paciente.

Chondromalacia patellae is one of the most common conditions in the elderly, overweight patients, high-performance athletes and increasingly affects young people. The remedy in the voice of a specialist.

By José Manuel Meza Reynosa Tam. In 2005, when the Argentinean star Gabriel Omar Batistuta retired prematurely from the soccer fields, he had just turn 36 years old (in which many are still active). His heart asked him to keep playing, but his knees were ruined.

According to Armando Jesús Cantú André, orthopedic surgeon and traumatologist graduate from the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon (UANL), it is important to know the causes that originate it, as well as the treatments, because many people live with knee pain without know that the remedy can be simpler than you imagine.

“One of the most frequent pathologies is chondromalacia, which is a wear of the cartilage. It’s where the kneecap scrapes and ends.

En su última temporada sólo jugó tres partidos y no anotó ningún gol. Una completa frustración para alguien que había sido campeón de goleo en la Superliga Argentina, en Serie A italiana y en la Copa América (en dos ocasiones) con su selección.

Ejemplos como ese sobran. No hace mucho su compatriota, Diego Armando Maradona, no podía caminar por problemas en las rodillas, pero la realidad es que éste es un padecimiento bastante común no sólo en deportistas y aqueja a personas de todo tipo.

De acuerdo con Armando Jesús Cantú André, cirujano ortopedista y traumatólogo por la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL), es importante conocer las causas que lo originan, así como los tratamientos, porque es mucha la gente que vive con el dolor de rodillas sin saber que el remedio puede ser más sencillo de lo que imagina.

“Una de las patologías más frecuentes es la condromalacia, que es un desgaste del cartílago.

Es donde la rótula raspa y se acaba. Representa un problema no nada más de los ancianos, sino que también está en los jóvenes, en los jugadores de futbol, los corredores”, especificó.

Algunos de los síntomas más comunes son el dolor y la crepitación cuando las rodillas truenan al flexionarse, subiendo y bajando escaleras, o al ponerse en cuclillas.

“La parte inferior de la rodilla se llama fémur y la de arriba patela, así que a este mal también se le denomina síndrome patelofemoral”, refirió. ¿POR QUÉ SE PRESENTA?

La explicación que el doctor Cantú André le da al padecimiento de las rodillas es contundente.

“Todo se debe al desgaste”, aunque las causas, aclaró, son multifactoriales.

“Una de ellas es la edad. Otras: el sobrepeso, el ejercicio excesivo, la falta de ejercicio, la alimentación, las caídas, la mala alinea-

ción; quienes tienen las rodillas como charrito hacia afuera o inverso, o para adentro como el de ‘Quico’, el personaje del “Chavo del Ocho”.

“Entonces está raspado el cartílago, que debe estar exactamente alineado con la rótula, pero que por algunos motivos se encuentra por un lado”, explicó.

El especialista dijo que por esta cuestión hay personas que sienten que les raspa hueso con hueso.

“Sienten un roce, dolor en los primeros pasos. O cuando están sentados por mucho tiempo al pararse experimentan molestia en las rodillas, así como también aquellos cuando se levantan de la cama.

“Sufren malestar al andar en escalones, principalmente al bajarlos, porque con cada paso se reestira y les duele. Esas serían unas de las primeras señales, por ello cuando se vea y sienta así hay que descartar una condromalacia. Es en lo primero que necesitamos estar pensando”, destacó Cantú André.

El médico reconoció que la inflamación también puede ser un signo que se desprende por el choque entre los huesos.

“Se forma más líquido, las rodillas se ponen grandotas, rojas y a eso se le conoce como sinovitis, que es la inflamación de las membranas sinoviales”, alertó.

Aseguró que algunas veces es fácil darse cuenta quienes sufren dicho padecimiento, porque en vez de caminar hacia adelante no doblan las rodillas y hacen un bamboleo a los lados para poderse desplazar; sin embargo, no todos presentan las mismas señales y algunos ni siquiera lo saben, por eso es importante buscar ayuda. ¿QUÉ PASA SI NO SE ATIENDE?

El entrevistado señaló que el dolor y la inflamación continuarán en un paciente que no recibe

atención médica en sus rodillas, hasta que le provoque un estado incapacitante o deambulante.

“Lo más malo que puede pasar con esto es dolor y una falta de movilidad. Esto va a conllevar a que se hinche la rodilla, a que le cargue más peso a otra parte.

“Primero para hacer un excelente tratamiento tenemos que efectuar un mejor diagnóstico.

Actualmente hay condroprotectores. Son sustancias que hacen que el cartílago vuelva a salir, entre comillas, porque el principal reto del ortopedista es evitar la pérdida de este tejido”, manifestó.

Cantú André puso en relieve que a la fecha se han elaborado una gran cantidad de estudios para poder llegar a este logro de la medicina: sustituir el cartílago original por uno artificial.

“Estos condroprotectores se toman vía oral haciendo que salga un tejido lo más similar.

Hay diferentes fórmulas, dependiendo del estado de desgaste de cada paciente como los medicamentos con glucosamina, sulfato de condroitina, colágeno, vitamina C, sulfato de magnesio; sustancias que hacen que mejoren y lo principal corregir el daño que se tiene”, expresó.

El cirujano ortopedista afirmó que no todas las personas son candidatas a una prótesis. Eso se determina en función del tipo de daño que exista en las rodillas, al igual que los métodos invasivos que deban de practicarse.

“Estamos hablando que estas cirugías pueden ser pequeñas, como la artroscopía, la cual consiste en hacer una pequeña herida de un centímetro en la rodilla, introducir una cámara de televisión, una cuchilla, como una podadora de zacate y con eso aspiramos y limpiamos todo el cartílago.

“En cambio, si es mucho el desgaste, se puede llegar hasta a cambiar un pedazo de hueso, colocar un implante en vez de ese cartílago”, ilustró.

A DÓNDE ACUDIR

Un punto muy importante a considerar es que en la frontera de Tamaulipas existen especialistas capacitados para poder llevar a cabo la rehabilitación de las rodillas. Gracias a que los médicos están certificados reciben también pacientes extranjeros del valle de Texas.

“La condromalacia rotuliana debe ser tratada por el cirujano ortopedista. Es el encarga-

do de manejar todos estos problemas de cartílago y lesiones.

“En cuanto a las recomendaciones, lo que es la gelatina, el colágeno, claro que beneficia. Yo les digo a mis pacientes, si no ayuda no perjudica y si se siente bien tómelo, definitivamente”, describió.

El traumatólogo afirmó que además de las personas de la tercera edad, es muy común que reciba pacientes que practican deportes.

“Los que tienen ciertas disciplinas vienen con problemas de condromalacia. Yo tengo aquí en mi consulta pacientes de 10, 11, 12, 13 años de que son jugadores profesionales, seleccionados estatales que todos los días entrenan y tienen lastimadas las rodillas y bien jovencitos.

“A las niñas de ‘high school’ y los muchachos que los ponen a correr a las seis de la mañana. Hacen 10 millas y al mediodía otras 10 millas, obviamente se lastiman”, ejemplificó.

EJERCICIO MODERADO

El especialista remarcó que las actividades físicas en las que tenga que haber un uso de las rodillas requieren ser graduadas.

“Acabo de venir de un congreso de condroprotectores y al final uno de los mejores cirujanos que había ahí terminó diciendo: –el deporte es malo, el ejercicio es bueno–.

“Porque todo en exceso va a dañar las rodillas, por eso la vida de los jugadores es muy corta, pues se acaban las rodillas, se terminan el cartílago”, aseguró.

No obstante, cuando alguien es sometido a un tratamiento de restauración de rodilla puede volver a realizar actividades físicas de manera normal.

“Pero es bien importante: todas las cirugías valen el 50 por ciento y el otro 50 es la rehabilitación. Si se siguen las recomendaciones les mejora completamente la vida, pues el simple hecho de no vivir con dolor les cambia todo”, afirmó Cantú André.

Pidió este ortopedista poner atención a los malestares de rodilla, porque una persona que pierde la movilidad, reconoció, tiende a permanecer sedentaria, desencadenando otros padecimientos como la obesidad, el sobrepeso, la diabetes y la hipertensión arterial. Así que si quiere tener una mejor calidad de vida debe poner más atención a las rodillas y visitar al especialista.

Bonfil, donde el municipio donó el terreno y el Estado realizó la construcción para beneficiar a las familias de esa comunidad rural. “Ésta es otra demostración más del interés que tenemos de servir a Periquitos; hemos cambiado 200 luminarias, reparado baches, pintado de escuelas, y vamos a seguir trabajando en obra pública”, dijo la presidenta municipal, resaltando la coordinación de ambos gobiernos.

“Agradezco al gobernador del Estado este trabajo y le pido que sigamos trabajando en coordinación para hacer muchas más obras que lleguen a todos ustedes, porque se merecen esto y mucho más, acuérdense de jugar en el equipo de Reynosa y de todos sus ejidos”, agregó.

Who has been for almost two decades the administrator of one of the most important international bridges between Mexico and the United States says goodbye to her job by showing her gratitude and treasuring great life experiences.

By José Manuel Meza Progreso, Texas The year 2000 not only marked the beginning of an era, but one of the most important periods of personal and professional improvement for a woman triumphing in the United States.

Julie Ann Guerra Ramírez came to give a more human face to the international

crossing of Progreso, Texas, which links the border of Nuevo Progreso, Tamaulipas, Mexico.

The challenge was to take down the old infrastructure and build a modern vehicular and pedestrian crossing as a secure platform for international-private-commercial transportation between two nations and this was: In October 2001, after a year of rigo-

rous studies, tests and multiple meetings every week, the new bridge began operating with an intelligent woman at the helm.

For several years Julie Ann, originally from San Benito, had worked as a banker for the private sector and faced an ambitious and difficult task, to consolidate one of the most promising cross port in the country.

Why in this area of the United States and Mexico ?, Because this region of South

Texas became a meeting point for winter tourism, which migrates every year from the north of the continent, looking for friendlier areas to pass the low temperatures of the north.

And on the Mexican side, because it’s right there, in Nuevo Progreso, where a prestigious Medical Tourism cluster was installed. Intelligently developers and chambers of commerce saw an opportunity to

bring vacationers the services they need such as opticians, dentists, pharmacies, crafts, gastronomy and liquors, at a competitive price.

Capitalizing on these opportunities, we looked at the need to have a more efficient international crossing, which would give fluidity to an increasing number of people interested in tourism on the other side of the border.

A WOMAN COMPLIED

It was there that Julie Ann played a very important role. She was chosen for her warmth and vocation to service and for her tenacity to attend to problems that may arise.

Not long after she began her work that year 2001, an event occurred that for her and her companions represented a litmus test: the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York was a severe blow for the economy of the border region and for the mood of the Americans.

Fear seized millions of people. The country was under attack. Changed the ways of tourism, toughened security controls at all entrances and exits of the nation and collapsed the number of visitors who used to use the International Bridge of Progreso, customs were in check.

Julie Ann and her work team faced this new reality, but never lowered their arms.

The crossing continued to operate, opening daily, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

There was a lot of uncertainty about the future and the safety of the citizens. Even though very few had the courage to go on vacation, this woman worked to manage difficult times.

Far from distancing relations abroad, Julie Ann shook them, organizing events and humanitarian donations. Gradually, confidence returned. The people understood that life had to go on.

She recalls that since the international bridge has been in Progreso, the only time it closed was on the day the assassination of President John F. Kennedy happen.

From then on, it has always been open to provide a courteous and effective service.

Even when the new port was rebuilt in 2001 there was a way for pedestrians and cars to cross. The bridge that was before was torn down completely, but there was a part that stand so as not to interrupt the circulation.

In fact, in the pedestrian area, today is not only one of the international ports that seasonally becomes one of the busiest in the world, but also crosses a large number of vehicles and cargo transport.

That is why the effort of 19 years at the head of this bridge has been worthwhile and in the region there are many people who recognize the work Julie Ann has done since being in charge of this company.

“I came here bringing some ideas of

what I already knew, how to run the operations, of running a business. I was mixing it here with everything ... and it went well,” she said.

WITH HUMAN PROFILE

The Nuevo Progreso International Border is one of the three private bridges that exist on this border, but Julie Ann not only took charge of administering it charging tolls, but she always did a humanitarian and social work, close to the Mexican counterparts.

“I feel very proud to be part of this work.

When I arrived here 19 years ago I was approaching with Nuevo Progreso little by little, and for me, they are my second family, because they have seen me well, I have seen them well.

“We have always been involved in other causes and associations, such as the Mabel Foundation, having the privilege of participating in supporting people in need,” she said.

This bridge has not only allowed to build a solid trade in the area, but it has given happiness to many people. To the “Winter Texans” who enjoy their leisure seasons and those who use it to visit their loved ones or bring them gifts. The reasons can be many and for each there is a good reason.

In addition, Julie Ann has shown leadership and vision to provide good service to the transportation system. There are companies that prefer to cross their products here or return their empty containers, because logistics is better than going to Reynosa or Nuevo Laredo.

“We have worked with the different go-

vernment agencies, also providing the facilities to the transport companies. I believe that my greatest satisfaction in all these years has been being able to attend to the people as friendly as possible, that was always my priority.

“And this is what I think the users want to receive, a warm welcome. It’s something I’ve told my workers, when I have meetings, a friendly smile, welcome, that means a lot to the people,” she said.

SOMETHING TO BE PROUD OF

This is a privileged point of the nation, because not every city has an international bridge. Many cities have applied unsuccessfully and Progreso has it.

“Mr. Sam R. Sparks had a vision of golden eyes. He was very helpful with people. May he rest in peace, I followed his goal as if he were here,” said the first director of the new crossroads, who has done a great team effort, keeping the bridge working all the time as an achievement.

“We are seeing a lot of people flow.

Obviously with the tragedy of 9-11 people got scared, they did not want to come, they did not know what was happening.

Then the passport rules came in, which was very expensive.

“Since then the flow has dropped quite a bit, but in the last five years we have seen very good capacity and we have many people crossing, both those from here and those who come from Mexico. A month ago on a saturday more than six thousand pedestrians passed,” she said.

Julie Ann also acknowledged that

throughout her experience as director of the international crossing have been able to introduce the necessary improvements for users, in signs, ramps for disabled people and the pedestrian shadow.

While on the family and cultural side, this infrastructure stands out as a point of stroll and union in which the bonds of hospitality are tightened and important events in the lives of people have been consummated.

That is why for Julie Ann there is a link that will always tide her to the international bridge of Nuevo Progreso. The time has come to assume other roles, dedicate more time to her family and culminate this professional career with golden letters, on a very important date as it is on March 21, which celebrates Tourist Day. “I hope to see you here. con vocación y servicio

Quien ha sido durante casi dos décadas la administradora de uno de los puentes internacionales más importantes entre México y Estados Unidos se despide del cargo mostrando su agradecimiento y atesorando grandes experiencias de vida.

Por José Manuel Meza Progreso, Texas El año 2000 no solamente marcó el inicio de una era, sino una de las épocas de superación personal y profesional más importantes para una mujer triunfando en Estados Unidos.

Julie Ann Guerra Ramírez vino a darle un rostro más humano al cruce internacional de Progreso, Texas, que une la frontera de Nuevo Progreso, Tamaulipas, México.

El reto era derrumbar la vieja infraestructura y construir un moderno paso vehicular y peatonal como una plataforma segura para el transporte internacional–privado–comercial entre dos naciones y así fue: En octubre de 2001, después de un año de rigurosos estudios, pruebas y múltiples juntas todas las semanas, comenzó a operar el nuevo puente con una inteligente mujer al frente.

Durante varios años Julie Ann, originaria de San Benito, había trabajado como banquera para la iniciativa privada y tenía enfrente una ambiciosa y difícil tarea, la de consolidar uno de los pasos portuarios más prometedores del país. ¿Por qué en esta zona de Estados Unidos y México?, porque esta región del sur de Texas se convirtió en un punto de reunión para el turismo de invierno, que emigra cada año desde el norte del continente, buscando zonas más amigables para soportar las bajas temperaturas.

Y del lado mexicano, porque es justo ahí, en Nuevo Progreso, donde se instaló un prestigioso clúster de Turismo Médico.

Inteligentemente los desarrolladores y cámaras de comercio vieron una oportunidad de acercar a los vacacionistas los servicios que ellos necesitan como ópticas, dentistas, farmacias, artesanías, gastronomía y licores, a un precio competitivo.

Capitalizando estas oportunidades se vió la necesidad de tener un cruce internacional más eficiente, que diera fluidez a un cada vez mayor número de personas

interesadas en hacer turismo del otro lado de la frontera.

UNA MUJER CUMPLIDA

Fue ahí donde Julie Ann desempeñó un rol muy importante. Ella fue elegida por su calidez y vocación de servicio y, por su tenacidad para atender problemáticas que pudieran presentarse.

No mucho tiempo después de iniciar su trabajo aquel año 2001, ocurrió un acontecimiento que para ella y sus compañeros representó una prueba de fuego: el ataque terrorista al World Trade Center de Nueva York fue un duro golpe para la economía de la región fronteriza y para el ánimo de los estadounidenses.

El miedo se apoderó de millones de personas. El país estuvo bajo ataque. Cambiaron las formas de hacer turismo, se endurecieron los controles de seguridad en todas las entradas y salidas de la nación y se desplomó la cantidad de visitantes que acostumbraban usar el Puente Internacional

de Progreso, las aduanas estaban en jaque.

Julie Ann y su equipo de trabajo hicieron frente a esta nueva realidad, pero nunca bajaron los brazos. El cruce siguió operando, abriendo diariamente, las 24 horas, los siete días de la semana, los 365 días del año.

Había mucha incertidumbre sobre el futuro y la seguridad de la ciudadanía. Aún y cuando muy pocos tuvieron el valor para irse de vacaciones, esta mujer trabajó para administrar los tiempos difíciles.

Lejos de distanciar las relaciones con el extranjero, Julie Ann las estrechó, con la organización de eventos y donaciones humanitarias. Paulatinamente regresó la confianza. La gente entendió que tenía que seguir haciendo su vida.

Ella recuerda que desde que existe en Progreso un puente internacional la única vez que éste cerró fue con el asesinato del presidente John F. Kennedy. De ahí en fuera ha estado abierto siempre para brindar un servicio cortés y efectivo.

Incluso, cuando el nuevo puerto fue

reconstruido en 2001 hubo una manera de que cruzaran los peatones y los carros. El puente que estaba antes lo quebraron completamente, pero quedó una parte para no interrumpir la circulación.

De hecho, en el renglón peatonal, hoy en día no solamente es uno de los puertos internacionales que por temporada se vuelve uno de los más transitados del mundo, sino que también cruza una gran cantidad de vehículos y transporte de carga.

Es por eso que el esfuerzo de 19 años al frente de este puente ha valido la pena y en la región son muchas las personas que reconocen la labor de Julie Ann al frente de esta empresa.

“Llegué aquí trayendo algunas ideas de lo que ya sabía, como correr las operaciones, del manejo de un negocio. Lo fui mezclando aquí con todo… y nos fue bien”, comentó.

es uno de los tres puentes privados que existen en esta frontera, pero Julie Ann no solamente se encargó de administrarlo cobrando peajes, sino que hizo siempre un trabajo humanitario y social, cercano a las contrapartes mexicanas.

“Yo me siento muy orgullosa de ser parte de este trabajo. Cuando llegué aquí hace 19 años me fui acercando con Nuevo Progreso poco a poco, y para mí, ellos son mi segunda familia, porque me han visto bien, yo los he visto bien.

“Siempre hemos estado involucrados en otras causas y asociaciones, como la fundación Mabel, teniendo el privilegio de participar apoyando a la gente necesitada”, señaló.

Este puente no solamente ha permitido construir un comercio sólido en la zona, sino que le ha dado felicidad a mucha gente. A los “Winter Texans” que disfrutan de sus temporadas de esparcimiento y a quienes lo usan para visitar a sus seres queridos o llevarles regalos. Los motivos pueden ser muchos y para cada uno hay una buena razón.

Además, Julie Ann ha mostrado un liderazgo y visión para poder brindar buen servicio al sistema de transportación. Hay empresas que prefieren cruzar por aquí sus productos o regresar sus contenedores vacíos, porque en la logística les conviene más que ir hasta Reynosa o Nuevo Laredo.

“Hemos trabajado con las diferentes agencias del gobierno, también brindando las facilidades a las compañías transportistas. Yo creo que mi máxima satisfacción en todos estos años ha sido poder atender a la gente lo más cordial que se pueda, esa siempre fue mi prioridad.

“Y es lo que pienso que los usuarios quieren recibir, una cordial bienvenida. Es algo que le he dicho a mis trabajadores, cuando tengo las juntas, una sonrisa cordial, la bienvenida, eso quiere decir mucho para la gente”, destacó.

MOTIVO DE ORGULLO

Éste es un punto privilegiado de la nación, porque no cualquier ciudad dispone de un puente internacional. Muchas urbes los han solicitado sin éxito y Progreso lo tiene.

“El señor Sam R. Sparks tenía una visión de ojos de oro. Él era muy servicial con la gente. Que en paz descanse, yo seguí la meta de él como si estuviera aquí”, relató la primera directora del cruce nue-

vo, que ha hecho un gran trabajo de equipo, manteniendo el puente todo el tiempo operando como un logro.

“Estamos viendo mucho flujo de gente. Obviamente con la tragedia del 9-11 la gente se asustó, no querían venir, no sabían lo que estaba pasando. Después entraron las reglas del pasaporte, que estaba bien caro.

“Desde entonces bajó bastante el flujo, pero en los últimos cinco años hemos visto muy buen aforo y tenemos mucha gente cruzando, tanto a los de aquí, como a los que vienen de México. Hace un mes en un sábado pasaron más de seis mil peatones”, señaló.

Julie Ann también reconoció que a lo

largo de su experiencia como directora del cruce internacional se han podido introducir las mejoras necesarias para los usuarios, en señalamientos, rampas para personas discapacitadas así como la sombra peatonal.

Mientras que por el lado familiar y cultural esta infraestructura se destaca por ser un punto de paseo y de unión en el que se estrechan los lazos de hospitalidad y se han consumado acontecimientos importantes en las vidas de las personas.

“Muchos simplemente quieren ver el río, pararse a la mitad, tomarse fotos. Hemos tenido bodas a mediación del puente. Viene el novio de México o la novia y se casan ahí justo a la mitad. Son bastantes y muy bonitas las experiencias que se han dado aquí”, relató.

Es por eso que para Julie Ann existe un vínculo que la unirá siempre al puente internacional de Nuevo Progreso. Ha llegado el momento de asumir otros roles, dedicarle más tiempo a su familia y culminar esta trayectoria profesional con letras doradas, en una fecha muy importante como lo es el 21 de marzo, que se festeja el Día del Turista.

“Espero verlos aquí. Me voy por cosas personales y quiero estar con mi esposo (el señor Roberto Ramírez) en un momento muy importante, pero no les digo adiós, sino hasta pronto, ¡que Dios los bendiga!”, siempre agradeceré todas sus atenciones”, manifestó Julie Ann Guerra Ramírez, una mujer querida en la frontera de Progreso, Texas y Progreso, Tamaulipas, y conocida por los comerciantes y turistas de diversas ciudades de Estados Unidos, Canadá y México por haber contribuido al desarrollo y bienestar de la región.
