CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF BETTER HEALTH IN IRELAND Udo's Oil is celebrating 20 years of better health in Ireland. And there's more than one reason why it's the top selling vegetarian source of Omega 3, 6 and 9. Discover how Udo’s Oil can help you feel 20 years young everyday… Glowing Skin – The essential fats in Udo’s Oil are so important to the cells that make up our skin, hair and nails and without them our skin can feel dry, our hair lacks lustre and our nails are brittle. Take Udo’s Oil every day to see and feel the difference. Supple Joints - Inflammation is a major factor when it comes to joint pain. Adding Udo’s Oil to your diet helps lubricate the soft tissue around the bones. One of the most beneficial results we hear from regular Healthy Heart - Omega 3 fatty acids, like those found in Udo’s Oil, are a powerful tool when it comes to preserving heart health and managing disease; including maintaining normal blood pressure, lowering cholesterol levels and maintaining normal levels of triglycerides (blood fats). Omega 3 can also keep the inside of your arteries smooth and combined with Omega 6, helps the regulation of the nervous system activity.

Ingredients

Udo’s Oil combines 8 of the very best natural ingredients. It contains flaxseed oil which has twice the omega 3 of fish oils. Traditionally used in cooking across India and China, sesame oil is rich in omega 6 and vitamins A, B and E, while sunflower seed oil, another great omega 6 source, enhances the Udo’s Oil taste. It also features coconut oil of the very highest quality to help protect the heart. Evening primrose oil is a powerful anti-inflammatory; soy lecithin helps brain cells and nerves; rice bran oil contains cholesterol-

lowering sterols and tocotrienol acts as a powerful, natural antioxidant. That’s a whole lot of omega goodness without a single whiff of fish.

How To Use Udo’s Oil

The mild, nutty taste of Udo’s Oil can be enjoyed straight off the spoon, or simply pour, drizzle or mix 2 to 3 tablespoons into food each day.

How much should I take?

As a guideline take one dessert spoon for every 50lbs (25kg) of bodyweight. But everyone is different and many users experience great results taking less than the guideline amount. Remember Udo’s Oil is delicious when added to warm food, but don’t cook, bake or fry with it as this destroys the delicate EFAs. Udo’s Oil should be kept refrigerated at all times even after opening and preferably in its box. Udo’s Oil will remain fresh for up to eight weeks if stored in this way. You can also freeze Udo’s Oil for up to two years with no loss of flavour or benefit. Don’t worry, oils contract when they freeze, so the bottle won’t break even if full. Udo’s Oil capsules are a convenient alternative for those on the move or going on holidays. Take 2-6 capsules daily with meals.

Grab your own bottle of Udo’s Oil from any of our Horans Health Stores.

IRRITABLE BOWEL

SYNDROME

IBS is the most common problem associated with the digestive system. It can be a collection of different symptoms and these symptoms can vary from person to person and also present varying extremes of discomfort. Some of the more common symptoms include: Abdominal Discomfort/Pain/ Cramps, Constipation/Diarrhoea (One or both), Bloating, Tummy Rumbling, Heart Burn/Indigestion, Headaches, Nausea, Gas/Flatulence. As well as physical symptoms IBS may also affect a person mentally with emotional symptoms, such as mood swings and anxiety. IBS shows us just how strong the brain to gut connection is. Our brain and gut can have a positive or negative effect on each other, sometimes more than we realise for example if you feel anxious or nervous you may feel this in your tummy. If you suffer from IBS this anxiety may trigger the onset of some of the symptoms mentioned such as cramps or constipation/ diarrhoea. What triggers symptoms of IBS in a person may also vary; for some the triggers may be dietary while for others it could be emotional, such as stress, anxiety or shock. If it is dietary most people find by avoiding the offending food for a period of time helps to relieve the symptoms and you may be able to introduce it back gradually

• Aloe Vera Gel: Taken twice a day may also help to calm and soothe the digestive system, stomach and bowel • Pro-biotics: Have a huge role to play in maintaining gut and bowel health. Helping to deliver optimal balance of good and bad bacteria, thus improving health and wellbeing. Always seek advice when purchasing a probiotic to ensure optimum results. • Symprove: Taken 10minutes before breakfast every morning for 12 weeks Symprove may significantly improve bowel habits, abdominal pain and general IBS symptoms. You can continue with a lower daily maintenance dose after the 12 weeks if required. Keep fluid intake with meals to a minimum and chew food thoroughly. Fluids may dilute stomach acid which we need to aid digestion.

If your IBS is triggered by emotional factors as mentioned earlier, some of the natural remedies you may find beneficial are Rhodiola, Irish Botanica Peace and Calm, High Potency B-Complex such as Viridian or Solo, Fibre is essential in maintaining a the homeopathic remedy ANX and also worth healthy bowel. URINARY DON’T FEEL UTI SYMPTOMS T RACT INFECTIONS

THEBURN!

47%

OF ALL WOMEN REPORT AT LEAST ONE URINARY TRACT INFECTION (UTI) SOMETIME DURING THEIR LIFETIME, AND AFTER AN INITIAL UTI,

20%- 30% OF WOMEN EXPERIENCE A RECURRENCE [1]

ANTIBIOTICS

In medical practice, the presence of high numbers of friendly bacteria in the vagina is often equated with being ‘healthy’ and low numbers, or absence, as being ‘abnormal’. Treating UTIs with antibiotics has the undesirable side effect of reducing the friendly bacteria as antibiotics kill both good and bad bacteria. This can prevent the natural barrier provided by these probiotics, and may raise drug resistance. The worry is that continuing to use antibiotics for prevention can result in antibiotic resistance, so their over prescription is cautioned. [1] Foxman B; Epidemiology of urinary tract infections: incidence, morbidity, and economic costs. Dis Mon. 2003 Feb;49(2):53-70.

Symptoms of UTIs can vary significantly but will usually include: • Pain on urinating • A need to urinate more frequently than normal • Back pain • General ill feeling • Cloudy and smelly urine • A painful and tender abdominal area.

Cranberries

The use of Cranberry may be considered, by some, as an

old wives tale, but it has been used successfully for decades prior to the discovery of antibiotics for both the prevention and treatment of UTIs. Cranberry prevents bacteria such as E. coli (one of Regular sufferers have been shown to have the most common causes of UTIs) from sticking to altered bacterial types and levels in the body. In the cells of the bladder and urinary tract, preventing infection from taking hold. Many people particular, women often have significantly reduced friendly bacteria and noticeable levels of use cranberry juice as a method of treating/prebad bacteria such as E. coli. Oral consumption of venting an infection. While drinking cranberry juice is a good start, quite a lot of organic, unrefined friendly bacteria, or probiotics, in particular the cranberry juice would be required to match the strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus has shown to effect of taking cranberry capsules. This may prove improve this imbalance and therefore successfully quite costly, and research has shown that treat and prevent UTIs. consumption of the required amount of juice for These friendly bacteria work in a number of ways successful treatment is difficult to achieve. Also, by: unrefined cranberry juice has quite a bitter taste, and may be unpalatable to some – this is why much • Competing for space with invading bad bacteria. of the readily available cranberry juices are laden • Lowering the pH of the area making it an with sugar and/or artificial sweeteners. unsuitable environment for invading bacteria to However it is important to remember that the grow. infection-causing bacteria really love the taste of • Actively killing invading bacteria. sugar, and they grow and multiply when it is available to them!

Friendly Bacteria

Hormonal Changes

Women in particular suffer from UTIs more so than men. They occur when there is a higher than normal level of bacteria in the urine and can happen for a number of reasons, not just poor hygiene as many people think. A time women may experience more frequent UTIs is during periods of dramatic hormonal changes such as the menopause. When oestrogen levels drop the strength or integrity of the vaginal lining decreases also, resulting in a depletion of friendly bacteria. In addition diminishing numbers of these result in a rise in pH, which promotes the growth of invading bad bacteria such as E. coli. This time of life is particularly important for taking preventative measures against UTIs. Oestrogen levels vary considerably during menstruation, and women may be more susceptible to infections at different times of their cycle.

So it seems old wives' tales are not always to be taken with a pinch of salt! Prevention and treatment of UTIs is possible without antibiotics. A combination of cranberry concentrated capsules, and oral Probiotics is preferable. Those who suffer frequently are also advised to drink additional water (which dilutes the urine and prevents bacterial build up), urinate frequently, practise good hygiene especially after using the toilet, and avoid sugar/refined food.

YOUR QUESTIONS OUR ANSWERS Q

Recently my hair has started thinning. I have seen my GP and had my bloods tested, all came back ok. Is there any good supplement that I could take that might help.

Q

By Deirdre

Whenever my immune system is low I tend to get symptoms of kidney infections. It is never severe enough for antibiotics but it is uncomfortable, is there anything I can take to help prevent this.

Ensure you have a good balanced diet and if stress is an issue keep it to a minimum where possible. It is important to ensure your have good digestion and gut health. If either of these are an issue or you want to discuss them further just pop in and we will be happy to offer advice. Some good hair supplements worth checking out include, HAIR VOLUME.. which includes biotin and zinc along with amino acids which help activate the life processes of the hair follicle cells. SILICA PLUS..is another very good product which gets good results and helps promote healthy strong hair and nails. The one that gets my vote is SKIN.NY made from wild Irish seaweed, bamboo silica, marine collagen, zinc and B-vitamins which act quickly to help nourish the hair follicles.

Firstly, work on your immune system, so ensure you are getting enough rest and stress is under control. If your diet is lacking in nutrients than take a good quality multivitamin or check out the Superfoods in store such as ONE NUTRITION POWERGREENS (caps or powder). Herbal kidney tonics can be helpful in flushing out and supporting the kidneys, as well as helping to alleviate many urinary symptoms. VOGEL SOLIDAGO is a kidney tonic with a diuretic action and is generally supportive to the kidneys with its anti-inflammatory properties. Taking this along with a good quality pro-biotic such as BIO-KULT PRO-CYAN should help support and alleviate your symptoms.

The information contained in this column is not a substitute for medical advice and you should always consult with your GP.

FOOD INTOLERANCE TESTING It is with great happiness that I announce that I am now working in partnership with Horan’s Health Store within their new branch, in The Square, Tralee. Throughout my collaboration with this well-known health store branch, I will be spending multiple days in the store (see details below), where I will be carrying out vitamin and mineral testing, along with food sensitivity testing. The benefits of such tests are boundless. Food sensitivities or intolerances create an instability BREDA O CONNOR within the body which can lead to inflammation. In turn, the body can begin to develop chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, and digestive disorders. Oftentimes, one can lead a life dotted with peculiar symptoms which appear to be entirely unrelated to food, as symptoms which indicate otherwise can arise hours or even days after eating the ‘trigger’ food. By partaking in a simple, and sometimes temporary, elimination diet, your body will be given an opportunity to thrive without the pressure of constant agitation. A common school of thought in our fast-moving society, is that by taking in foods of a certain quality, we need not worry about our body’s nutrient levels. In a few rare cases, our food can be enough to maintain a boosted immune system which does not weaken with age. However, much of our population, with particular care being given to the young and the elderly, have difficulties assimilating the vital nutrients needed from our food. These include crucial vitamins and minerals. Several factors can affect this, including how nutrient dense the food in question is, and our own genetic absorption within our digestive system. Each day, our bodies thrive to rejuvenate themselves to produce skin, muscle, and bone through our evermultiplying cells. The red blood cells in

our bodies carry nutrients and oxygen to our bodies most remote outposts, all while sending nerve signals along the thousands of pathways of our bodies. In short, our cells are the source of our sustained life and our quality of health is dependent upon the power of these cells. Without the full use of at least thirty raw vitamins, minerals and dietary components, our bodies would entirely fail to function, just as a car would without fuel. For some time, as humans, we may be able to run on fumes through our modern diets where we are often overfed, yet undernourished. However, it will not be long until our bodies present us with illness, fatigue, or some other manifestation of their lack of energy to bolster our immune systems. Perhaps you have noticed that your skin has recently begun to look somewhat lacklustre or your night’s sleep is failing to get you through the day without the aid of processed adrenaline, such as coffee. You, or someone close to you, may also suffer from a mental illness, such as depression or anxiety disorders. Evidence shows that nutrition is directly linked to aiding and preventing the development of mental conditions such as schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s disease. Regardless of how mild or acute you view your symptoms, we are fortunate enough to live in a world where we do not have to settle for less than our optimum bodily function. There is no reason for you to lose control of an aspect of your life, or have your daily activities impeded in anyway, when the changes to be made are so simple, yet the positivity they enact can be monumental.

I would be very pleased to meet you on April 21st and 22nd, May 19th and 20th and June 23rd and 24th. Please speak with Clover and Sarah at Horan’s Health Store, in the Square, Tralee to book an appointment on these days. For appointments on other dates, feel free to contact me at 087 2772955. We will be more than happy to help, and look forward to meeting you!

CINNAMON & CHROMIUM – A DYNAMIC DUO If there was undeniable proof that a nutrient reduced hunger, cut cravings for sugar, helped you lose weight and improved your mood, with no downside, would you take it? Well there is and that nutrient is the mineral chromium. Chromium works by normalising sensitivity to insulin - the hormone that effectively dumps excess sugar as fat - and stabilising blood sugar Patrick Holford levels, concludes a review of 40 trials, which in turn controls appetite, energy dips and sugar and fat cravings, thereby helping weight control. Insulin resistance is thought to affect one in four non-obese people in Ireland, and the vast majority of overweight people. Chromium is essential for the insulin receptor to work, and most people just don't get enough. The average diet provides about 30mcg, and the more refined the food choices, the lower the chromium intake as it’s found in whole foods. Even with a good diet, you’re unlikely to eat more than 60mcg. That’s a fraction of what helps control sugar cravings. The most impressive effects were seen with doses of 400+mcg per day. Chromium is also excellent for a type of depression associated with excessive sleepiness, carb cravings and weight gain. In a double-blind study published in Biological Psychiatry, seven of the ten taking chromium showed a big improvement, as opposed to none on the placebo.

A study last year gave chromium to healthy overweight women, versus placebo, and found a reduction in food intake, hunger levels and fat cravings, and a tendency to decreased body weight. Another gave chromium to women with premenstrual mood disorders and found significant mood improvements. Another study reported those on chromium having ‘greater reductions in bingeing, weight, and depression’. Most studies have used over 400mcg a day, although improvements in insulin sensitivity occur in people taking just 200mcg a day. Chromium supplements usually contain 200mcg.

Cinnulin – a supercharged cinnamon extract Cinnamon also helps even out blood sugar peaks and troughs, but you need a lot – three to six grams (roughly a teaspoon). A Scandinavian study found those given 3 grams cinnamon produce less insulin after the meal and slows down gastric emptying. This would have the effect of ‘slow-releasing’ the carbohydrates in a meal. The active ingredient in cinnamon is an ingredient called MCHP. The cinnamon extract called Cinnulin® is very high in MCHP and, consequently, supplementing 1 gram of Cinnulin is equivalent to about 6 grams of cinnamon extract. Studies with Cinnulin show much more stable blood sugar balance. Supplementing cinnamon and chromium, together with a low Glycemic Load (GL) makes a lot of sense for those struggling with weight, sugar cravings and blood sugar balance.

ASK ALEXANDER, NATURAL BEAUTY EXPERT Post summer, my hair is really dry. What can I do to remedy this? Come summer, the sun's rays and salt water add extra stress factor to hair on top of other activities such as blow drying, straightening etc. Prevention is better than cure for our hair and we should protect our hair when outdoors by either covering it with a hat or scarf or alternatively applying a product with SPF. Coconut oil is an excellent natural product with SPF, it only takes a small amount to cover your hair and it also doubles as a styling product. If it's too late and your hair is already damaged then look for hair care products that will moisturise and nourish the hair and be sure to give your hair an intensive moisturising treatment once or twice a week. See below for ingredients to look for in haircare products and their properties. Can my diet improve the health of my hair? Yes your diet can greatly affect the health of your hair. If you do not eat enough good quality protein then the diameter of your hair follicles decreases which leaves your hair less full and lacklustre. Beans and legumes are a good source of protein that also offers Iron, Zinc and Biotin. A lack of Biotin in the diet can cause brittle hair. Omega Essential Fatty Acids, particular Omega 3, support scalp health and if your diet is lacking these fats then your scalp and hair may end up dry resulting in dullness. I recommend eating salmon and oily fish to make sure you are getting enough omegas but if you are vegetarian then try adding some hempseed to your diet. Dark leafy vegetables are rich in Vitamins A and C which are needed to product sebum in the scalp, the body's natural hair conditioner. When choosing shampoos and conditioners, can you give an idea of the type of ingredients to look out for depending on your hair type? For example, what's good for dry hair, coloured hair, fine hair that needs volume etc? There are an abundance of ingredients from nature's garden that can be used to address various hair types, there really is something for everyone. Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice provides an intensive moisturising treatment for dry and damaged hair; Jojoba Oil penetrates deep in to the hair shaft to repair hair and is great to use to strengthen long hair; Apricot Oil removes build up and smoothes the hair follicle to create excellent shine; Lavender repairs whilst also adding volume to fine hair; Sea Kelp is excellent at taming frizz; Pro-Vitamin B5 and B7 (Biotin) have thickening properties and work to repair damaged hair; Vitamin E provides excellent moisture without weighing hair down; Vitamin A and C protect the hair against environmental stessors.

YOUNG OR OLD, ESKIMO BRAIN 3.6.9 HELPS BOOST BRAINPOWER FOR EXAM SUCCESS AND SLOW COGNITIVE DECLINE. New research published in The FASEB Journal , one of the top global biology journals, argues omega-3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), along with vitamin D, are important for serotonin synthesis, release, and function in the brain. It also suggests that omega-3s and vitamin D could work together to improve cognitive function and social behavior with particular relevance to overall mental health.

Omega-3s: Essential to Good Health Most people associate omega-3s with cardiovascular health, but their benefits go far beyond the heart. Omega-3s support not only a healthy heart, but brain and cognitive function, joint mobility and eye health. Omega-3 also plays an important role in thinning the blood and reducing inflammation throughout the body — in the blood vessels, the joints and elsewhere. The beneficial omega-3s - eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are essential fats; as your body cannot make them; it is necessary to obtain them through diet. Surprisingly, 89% of Irish people are not consuming sufficient oily fish in their diet, so often there is a need to supplement with a good quality omega-3 product.

DHA - A True Brain Food DHA is like brain nutrition. Just as calcium is essential for building strong bones, DHA is essential for good brain health. DHA helps to improve learning, mood, memory and concentration. Supplementation has been shown to reduce depression, anger, aggression and anxiety.

A Vital Part of Exam Preparation Good nutrition is essential at any time of year, but especially during an exam year when your brain and body are under great stress. Exams can be stressful and so can concentrating for long periods of time in the classroom or when studying at home. That’s why if you’re a student, it’s worth knowing that the findings of one independent test showed that concentration was improved just two hours after eating the type of Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish. Increasing your level of omega-3, either through diet or supplementation can lead to improved concentration, a sharper memory, less anxiety, overall making it easier to study. Claire Breen, from Galway recommends Eskimo Brain

3.6.9 to all her friends. “I have used Eskimo Brain 3.6.9 fish oils over the past year and have found them unbelievably beneficial. My mum introduced them to me for exams, and while at first I was reluctant, I was extremely grateful and tried them. Within 1-2 days I felt sharper and more focused. After a few weeks, my skin was smooth and clear, which I also attribute to the product. It is a natural, affordable and an amazing product, which I have recommended to friends.”

Keep focused and slow cognitive decline It’s no surprise that omega-3 is so beneficial to brain health. The importance of these fatty acids becomes most obvious when they’re lacking. People who don’t get enough omega-3s in their diet can become demotivated, disinterested, forgetful and may experience low mood, while serious deficiency can lead to an increased risk of developing conditions such as ADD, dyslexia, depression and Alzheimer’s. Mary Conway, 85 years, from Castlebar would not go without her daily dose of Eskimo Brain 3.6.9, which she has been taking for over 5 years. "I’ve been using Eskimo Brain 369 for the last 5 years. I find it fantastic for my memory. I used to forget where I left things all the time but now my memory is excellent. I’m 85 years of age and have no aches or pains whatsoever, my skin has a healthy glow and I feel great and love life! I have no hesitation in recommending this product because I want to help others feel as well as I do!”

How much do I need? Studies show that you need 250mg DHA daily to support brain health. Eating oily fish twice a week – such as salmon or sardines, provides a healthy dose of omega-3 EPA/DHA. Not a fish fan, you can choose a high quality fish oil supplement such as Eskimo Brain 3.6.9. I’d recommend that you check your preferred supplement to see that you are getting adequate DHA, as often supplements can fall short. Eskimo Brain 3.6.9 combines the unique stable fish oil, Eskimo-3, which is high in DHA, with plant oils omega-6 and omega-9 along with brain friendly Co-Q10 and vitamin D. Whether you are feeling forgetful or just looking to increase brain power for exams, Eskimo Brain 3.6.9 will get you focused in no time.

Lecithin provides a natural source of polyunsaturates including essential fatty acids, Choline and inositol in their highly absorbable ‘phospholipid’ forms and other vitamins, minerals and nutritional factors. Lecithin is used to support the reduction of cholesterol, but did you know that the choline in the lecithin also supports brain function and memory. Just take 1 teasp with each meal. Give it a try and feel the benefits. Kate, Clash 9

PARENTING - 5 TOP TIPS TO SURVIVE EXAM TIME Exam time is one of the most challenging times to be a parent. It’s completely normal to be anxious about how much your child is working and whether they’ll get the results they need. As a parent you can play a key role in helping your child cope with exam stress, a relaxed parent will mean a calmer, relaxed child. Test out our top tips to sail through exam season. 1. Get enough sleep - One of the best ways to boost your ability to cope with stress is to get more rest. If you are having trouble getting the recommended 7 to 8 hours a night why not try Melissa Dream? A soothing blend of Chamomile, Lemon Balm, B Vitamins, L-Theanine

& Magnesium in a convenient tablet form, Melissa Dream is ideal for those with problems sleeping. 2. E xercise – Parents need to reduce their own stress levels associated with their child’s exam time. One of the best ways to fortify yourself against stress is to exercise regularly. Try an evening walk, a yoga class or any activity that can release nervous tension and calm the mind. 3. Relax your standards - The world will not end if their bedrooms aren’t cleaned for a couple of weekends. 4. Remain calm - It's hard as a parent not to reflect your own worry for your child in the lead up to exams back to them. Don’t let your past experiences colour your expectations for them. Be calm and supportive. The B vitamins and Chamomile in Melissa Dream can help with feelings of mild anxiety. 5. Eat well – At exam time the nutritional and energy needs of your family will increase, make sure you keep energy levels up by eating well. A daily smoothie packed with fruits and veggies is a quick and easy way to boost nutrient levels. Your children will benefit from having calm, supportive parents in the house.
