YOUR QUESTIONS OUR ANSWERS Q

What can I do to improve my circulation, as I really feel the cold?

You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to ways of improving your circulation. Firstly, exercise regularly, such as a brisk walk, swim or a session in the gym. Supplements which may help, include, 400mg of VITAMIN E and 50mg-100mg of NIACIN (VITAMIN B3) a day – vitamin E helps the body to use oxygen while niacin helps to dilate the blood vessels, so you get a real boost to your blood flow. Other circulation boosters such as GINGER and CAYENNE may help, either in food or supplement form. There is also a good homeopathic remedy worth checking out, CIRCULATION LIQUESCENCE It’s also worth getting your thyroid checked by the GP. I take a fish oil during the year but is it true that we need more Omega3 in the winter?

Yes, upping your intake of Omega3 fatty acids in the winter can be important. Omega 3 fats are highly concentrated in our brain and nervous system and essential in all the cell membranes that send and receive messages, where they may help to improve mood and memory. During the winter months we produce less serotonin (the happy brain chemical) because of lack of sunlight and this can lead to low mood and motivation. Ideally eat oily fish at least 3 times a week but if you are not doing this, supplementation is a good idea. Some of the better Omega3 supplements include: ESKIMO3 (available in liquid or capsule), MOREPA (1 to 2 capsule per day), the NORDIC NATURALS range of products or UDO’S OIL are all excellent choices.

MANAGE EXAM STRESS.... START NOW!!!! For some handy tips to help with exam stress, read on! • Start off your day with a good breakfast that includes power-packed porridge, eggs or a smoothie • Keep hydrated (dehydration can ‘shrink the brain’) • Keep to a routine and take regular breaks while studying • Learn to recognise when you are stressing; a break or a chat with someone who knows the pressure you are under will get things into perspective • Stay away from caffeine and sugary drinks as they only put extra pressure on the adrenals (stress glands) • Exercise! Even going for a quick walk will clear the head and boost the brain • Keep your sugar levels balanced by eating a healthy snack every few hours, such as a piece of fruit and handful of nuts. See in store for a range of healthy snacks! • Try to get enough sleep (at least 8 hours). Sleep helps your brain to assimilate new

knowledge into your long-term memory so that you can recall it when it comes to exam day Try and stick to these tips as much as possible. In addition, there are some excellent supplements in store which may help to keep you on track. Some of these include... • B-Complex: Helps to support the central nervous system and raises your stress tolerance level and coping ability. It also helps to keep your mood balanced! Some of our favourite brands include Viridian or Solo • Rhodiola: A wonderful herb for energy, mental focus and dealing with stress • Essential Fatty Acids (fish or seed oil in capsule or liquid form): Essential to help with focus, concentration and memory • Magnesium: An important mineral that can help support normal energy levels and functioning of the central nervous system. Magnesium aids in calming the nerves and relaxing the muscles, which in turn promotes restful sleep Hopefully you’ll find this advice beneficial. However, the best advice of all is START NOW. Don’t wait until just before exam time... (a bit like the studying!! ) Until next time, stay healthy... Deirdre

This stuff can make you feel young again The lack of energy that you begin to feel in midlife is not the disaster you think it is, because science has discovered how to fix it. As we age, levels of a substance called coenzyme Q10 drop. We need this compound to produce energy in our cells. Now, with something as simple as a daily capsule, you can get back your vitality. One of those things we feel when age begins to creep up on us is a lack of energy. But did you know that this is a problem that can be dealt with? Science has managed to find the explanation to why our energy levels dwindle and, better yet, researchers have given us a way to reverse the process and, in a sense, “grow young” again. What happens as you age is that your body gradually loses its ability to make energy because levels of a compound called coenzyme Q10 decrease. The coenzyme Q10 levels of an 80-year old are estimated to amount to about 40% of those found in the body of a young person.

Vital for energy Coenzyme Q10 is an essential vitamin-like compound which cells need in order to make energy. We produce it in our liver, and a certain amount comes from the food we eat. Now, thanks to researchers who have studied how coenzyme Q10 facilitates the energy turnover in cells, we can pop a pill with this compound and turn up the flame, so to speak. Today, millions of people worldwide take coenzyme Q10 as their daily energy boost, and it is completely natural to the body. The increased energy levels enable them to engage in activities that would normally have been too strenuous for them. 3

THE LOWDOWN ON CHOLESTEROL AND HOW TO REDUCE YOUR RISK OF HEART DISEASE… Coronary heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in Ireland for both men and women. High cholesterol is one of the major risk factors associated with coronary heart disease. According to Dr. Angie Brown, Medical Director of the Irish Heart Foundation, only 18% of adults over 45 years have a healthy cholesterol level in Ireland. There is no noticeable symptoms, so its really important that adults get their cholesterol levels tested as part of their annual checkup.

What is Cholesterol? Cholesterol is a waxy substance that’s found in the fats (lipids) in your blood. While your body needs cholesterol to build healthy cells, hormone production, vitamin D production and to produce bile acids for fat digestion, having high cholesterol can increase your risk of heart disease. If you have too much cholesterol in your blood, it can start to build up in the lining of your arteries. Over time, your arteries can become narrowed and blocked and eventually causes artherosclerosis – heart disease.

Is your Cholesterol High? A total cholesterol level of 5 and below is considered healthy. Total cholesterol is a combination of LDL and HDL Cholesterol. LDL Cholesterol is considered “bad” as it is the type that can build up in your arteries, while HDL Cholesterol is referred to as the “good” cholesterol as it helps to remove LDL cholesterol from the body. If you have confirmed that your cholesterol levels are high, then you need to take steps to lower your cholesterol naturally.

Top Tips for reducing Cholesterol Naturally: Although the precise cause of high cholesterol are still not fully understood, simple changes to your diet and lifestyle can make a huge difference to your health and reduce your risk considerably. Take Zerochol Plant Sterols daily: Zerochol is a natural food supplement that contains plant sterols, scientifically proven to lower LDL cholesterol.

As plant sterols are structurally similar to human cholesterol, they work by blocking the absorption of cholesterol in the gut, which contributes to a significant decrease in the blood LDL “bad” cholesterol level. New research confirms that 1.6 g (2 tablets) of Zerochol® plant sterols can lower cholesterol by 17% in 3 months, without any side effects. Zerochol also reduced Triglycerides by 17%, further improving the overall lipid profile and reducing risk of heart disease Switch to healthier fats: you should reduce foods high in saturated fat and cholesterol. Include foods such as avocado, olive oil, coconut oil, oily fish (salmon, sardines, and mackerel), nuts (walnuts, almonds, brazil nuts) and mixed seeds. Increase fibrous foods – High fibre foods can help lower cholesterol levels in the blood. Food sources: wholegrain breads, pastas, quinoa, beans, lentils and oats. Eat a rainbow of fruits and vegetables: they provide a multitude of antioxidants and phytochemicals, which have been shown to maintain a healthy heart and reduce blood pressure. Red and purple foods are particularly beneficial to the heart so choose foods such as tomatoes, blueberries, purple grapes, figs, raspberries, strawberries, cherries and red apples. Take Omega-3 fish oil daily – it has been shown to lower triglycerides, balance cholesterol, regulate heart rate and make blood platelets less sticky, overall improving heart health considerably. Eskimo-3 is a natural, stable fish oil which contains 1600mg omega-3 in every teaspoon. Exercise to lose weight – If overweight, weight loss can achieve up to 8% cholesterol reduction Quit smoking as it is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Visit www.quit.ie for more information.

Heart health program While Zerochol is very effective at lowering cholesterol on its own, it has been shown that following a heart healthy diet and lifestyle may further contribute to healthy cholesterol levels and improve your overall heart health. Changing habits is never easy, so we’re delighted to introduce a new FREE online support program, which provides daily diet and lifestyle tips, healthy snack ideas and recipes to help support your cholesterol lowering efforts.

Coenzyme Q10 100mg : I had very sore gums 12 mths ago. I went to my dentist and he told me I had gingivitis(gum disease) I didn’t like what I heard but he didn’t give me any cure so I did my own research that’s when I started to take coenzyme Q10 100 mg. My gums have improved a lot and so has my energy. Joan, Newcastlewest

TRIED AND TESTED

I wanted to try this product as I was suffering with my knees and I needed to try something that would ease the stiffness. I became very interested in this product after training I had received. Many customers were also enquiring about it. But I felt I could not sell it properly unless I tried it myself. I was also very conscious of the price and wanted reassurance that I was selling a product that really did work. I also realised that it took three months to really see the benefits. As it took three months for the cartilage to build up in the system. After three weeks the pain really lessened and month by month the stiffness eased. So I fully recommend this product to anyone. 4 MYTHS ABOUT ANTIBIOTICS

1. MYTH: Antibiotics make you get better faster from viral infections, such as colds and flu FACT: Antibiotics are designed to kill bacteria. They have no effect on viruses, such as colds and flu 2. MYTH: Antibiotics will reduce a temperature FACT: Antibiotics have no effect on your temperature 3. MYTH: Only people who use antibiotics regularly are at risk of Antibiotic Resistant Infections FACT: Unfortunately, anyone can develop an Antibiotic Resistant Infection, not just those who use antibiotics regularly 4. MYTH: There is nothing you can do to reduce your risk of Antibiotic Resistant Infections FACT: The most important thing you can do is keep your immune system strong, some remedies you will find in store to do this include Black Elderberry, Olive Leaf, Probiotic and don’t forget the old reliable Vitamin C.

DO A WATER AUDIT FOR A WEEK Fill a litre bottle of water at the start of your day to help you track your daily water consumption. Aim to have one litre consumed by lunchtime. Refill, and aim to finish the second litre by bedtime. Use for all your teas, coffees, soups - even what you use to make your porridge in the morning! It all counts. Work smart - check the capacity of your favourite cups and mugs, maybe change over to a 330ml instead of a standard 250ml mug. Fill a travel mug and consume on the journey to work. Give yourself mental reminders - put your water where you can see it. If you find it difficult to drink plain water add something to it eg. A squeeze of lemon, any cordial, a few mint leaves.

After a while you will find yourself keeping a mental tot of what you are drinking, and you will have an increased awareness of your natural thirst levels. Congratulations! You are successfully developing a new healthy habit. Measuring and tracking any aspect of our behaviour increases our awareness of our behaviour which, in turn, increases our chances of implementing successful changes in our lives. All of your body systems, and especially your brain, work most efficiently when they are guaranteed a regular supply of water. So, do yourself a big favour - keep yourself wellwatered and you will blossom. Ps. Only drink small amounts with your meals. Caroline, Mitchelstown

• Biodynamically grown on a certified organic herb farm with a GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) License. • An Irish brand. The power of Echinacea has long been known. In fact, it’s one of the most researched of all the herbs with over 400 papers published. Time and time again, it’s shown that Echinacea helps the body fight infection. It also works on three levels of the immune system: Barrier defenses: Echinacea actually deactivates the hyaluronidase system (a family of enzymes that degrade hyaluronic acid). Non-specific defenses: It increases the number of phagocytes (the cells that protect by ingesting harmful foreign particles, bacteria, dead or dying cells) in the body. It also has a fever lowering effect. Specific defenses: It moderates the antigens (the substances that cause your immune system to produce antibodies against it) in the blood so they work better. At the onset of cold and flu, take 5ml of Irish Botanica® Echinacea every two to three hours for the first six hours which stops a cold in its tracks. If you have a cold, take 5ml three times a day. THE SECRET TO WINTER WELLNESS Coughs, colds and tummy bugs are ever prevalent. As a nutritional therapist I recommend everybody look at their diet and lifestyle and try to make small gradual improvements to optimise overall health and wellbeing. The word ‘bacteria’ is usually associated with germs and illness, but friendly bacteria e.g. Acidophilus are essential for the body to function properly, maintain overall health and support winter wellness. When born vaginally, babies pick up ‘friendly’ bacteria from the mother during the passage through a clean and healthy birth canal. Studies have shown that one particular bacteria – Bifidobacterium Infantis – is extremely important in the large bowel of babies, and was found in approximately 60% of full-term newborns who were born vaginally and only in 6% of babies by caesarean sections. Protect you and your family during the colder months with these top tips and a microbiotic that’s just super.

Gut instinct

€O5 FF

At a normal state, the gut has 400 different species of bacteria which comprise 100 trillion live bacteria. Friendly bacteria and ‘unfavourable’ bacteria form a delicate balance and are continuously competing with each other. Think of it like a battle with two fighting armies. This is how I explain it to children! External factors such as poor eating habits, unclean drinking water, stress, inflammation, disease, antibiotics in food production, alcohol consumption, high sugar intake and aging, to name some, can greatly reduce the number of ‘good’ bacteria in the gut and increase the bad army, and therefore the risk of infection and illness.

The digestive system is definitely the most important system in the body. In fact, 60-70% of the immune system deals with digestion to make sure it’s working to its optimum. This is why it’s so important to address symptoms such as indigestion, bloating, gas, wind, undigested food in stool, diarrhoea, and constipation. Over time, if left untreated, they can lead to a weakened digestive system and what is called ‘leaky’ gut, which results in digestive problems, allergies and auto- immune disorders.

Feeling super Udo’s Choice® Super 8 is an excellent product with therapeutic strengths of eight different bacterial strains and 30 billion good bacteria per capsule. I recommend a product like this twice in the year for an average healthy adult to top up their levels of beneficial bacteria. If you have received antibiotics, have a weak immune system, candida/thrush or a digestive disorder such as Crohn’s, Inflammatory Bowel Disease or IBS, I recommend taking Super 8 regularly (ideal for continuous use and suitable from 5+ years). The capsules can be opened up and mixed into juices, yogurts and foods, or directly into the mouth for fresher breath and healthy gums. One capsule of Super 8 costs 86c per day (the larger 60s cap jar is better value with one capsule per day for two months costing you 74c per day). Probiotic yogurt drinks, which are about 42c per bottle, have far less bacteria and at least three teaspoons of sugar per unit. Dentists are raising concerns with schools as to the level of consumption of these sugary drinks which are perceived to be so healthy, and tooth health in young children. Natural probiotic yogurts are a much better alternative. Just add in your own seeds and fruits for extra taste. Udo’s Choice Super 8 available in your local Horans Health Stores.

WHY ARE MORE AND MORE PEOPLE IN IRELAND TAKING WHEY PROTEIN? Whey protein is among the best studied supplements in the world as it has a very high nutritional value, and scientific studies have revealed numerous health benefits. Whey protein isn’t just the fuel of big-bodied muscle builders it is being used more and more in everyday products because of its multifunctional attributes.

First of all though, what is Whey Protein? Whey protein is the protein fraction of whey, which is a liquid that separates from milk during cheese production. It is a complete, highquality protein, containing all of the essential amino acids. In addition, it is very digestible, absorbed from the gut quickly compared to other types of protein. These qualities make it one of the best dietary sources of protein available. Among the many benefits of taking Whey Protein, we have selected a few to describe. Muscle mass naturally declines with age. This usually leads to fat gain and raises the risk of many chronic diseases. Strength training coupled with the consumption of high-protein foods or protein supplements has been shown to be an effective preventive strategy. For this reason, whey protein is effective for the prevention of age-related muscle loss, as well as for improved strength and a better-looking body. Whey protein is excellent for promoting muscle growth and maintenance when coupled with

strength training. In addition, taking a whey protein supplement before or with a high-carb meal has been shown to moderate blood sugar in both healthy people and type 2 diabetics. There is also limited evidence that taking long-term, high-dose whey protein supplementation may lower cholesterol levels. Whey protein is also very satiating (filling), even more so than other types of protein. This makes it a useful addition to a weight loss diet. Eating more protein may promote fat loss by: • Suppressing appetite, leading to reduced calorie intake • Boosting metabolism, helping you burn more calories • Helping to maintain muscle mass when losing weight Whey protein has been shown to be particularly effective, and may have a superior effect on fat burning and satiety compared to other protein types. Whey protein is very easy to incorporate into the diet. It is sold as a powder that can be added to smoothies, yogurts, or simply mixed with water or milk. 25-50 grams per day (1-2 scoops) is a commonly recommended dosage, but make sure to follow the dosage instructions on the packaging. At the end of the day, whey protein is not just a convenient way to boost your protein intake, it may have some powerful health benefits as well.

What is Synergistic Nutrition? Synergy occurs when interactions between two or more compounds produce effects greater than the sum of their effects when taken individually. Just imagine two plus two equalling six instead of four. The key to synergy in supplementation is to ensure, as much as possible, that the product provides all the necessary tools to absorb, utilise, activate and metabolise every nutrient in that product. Absorption is only one small piece of the puzzle. It’s true that even a basic multivitamin is, by its very nature, synergistic , at least to a degree. But a nutrient combination can either be a littole synergistic, very synergistic or anywhere in between. To get the greatest effect from a supplement, you need to achieve as high a level of synergy as possible. Synergy doesn’t occur in a bottle, but in the body. Even the healthiest of bodies are never going to provide the perfect environment for total nutrient synergy. Without question, this has been the main limitation of nutritional supplements over the years. Companies have provided what are often excellent nutrient combinations, but without giving the body the means to generate the necessary synergy to maximise their potential benefits.

Product Manual Product Manual 2017 2017

Terra Nova products provide not only the nutrients themselves but also a MagniFood botanical complex designed to enhance the absorption, bioavailability, utilisation, activity, metabolism, stability, function and effect of the nutrients in that product, as well as generally making the body itself a more synergistic environment for nutrients. This is the primary reason why people seem to experience an unusually high degree of benefits when they take Terra Nova nutritional products. Terra Nova is a vegan range and excipient free. Excipients are commonly used ingredients that are used as preservatives, bulking agents. flowing agents or to enhance product solubility. Many of the plants used in Terra Nova products are fresh freeze dried. Research shows that fresh fresh freeze drying has the unique ability to retain a plant’s enzyme and is shown to be superior to other drying methods in terms of activation, stability, solubility and preservation of a plant’s original fresh chemistry.
