I suffer from indigestion on and off. I have a good enough diet and avoid the food I think aggravate it as much as possible but I still get it. What can I take that would be natural?

Salus do a very good “Artichoke” supplement which helps maintain a healthy digestion. Its liquid form and you take20ml either before or after meals. Another product to look at is Vogels “Digestisan”, this also contains artichoke along with Dandelion and Peppermint. 20 drops in a little water 3 times a day should help. Also, consider taking a digestive enzyme capsule prior to each meal, which will help you breakdown and digest your foods.

WHY TAKE PROBIOTICS?

The use of beneficial bacteria, commonly known as “PROBIOTICS” to improve health dates back over a hundred years, but only in the last few decades have probiotics become very popular. They are now widely available and even used clinically to manage a variety of complaints. Believe it or not we human beings are mostly made of bacteria, in fact the bacteria cells in your body out numbers your own cells 10 to 1. Most of these bacteria are found in your digestive system, where they act as a vital organ much like your liver or brain and influence the health of not just your digestive system but your overall body. Modern lifestyles, including stress, alcohol, antibiotics, poor diet and lack of exercise can cause an imbalance in your bacteria, killing off your good bacteria and allowing the bad bacteria to flourish, leading to poor health. PROBIOTICS (available in capsule and powder form) are good bacteria that help improve the health of your gut. Good bacteria are also important for the development of a healthy immune system and some research has shown that a daily probiotic may help reduce risk of infection. They also help with digestive issues such as irritable bowel which may include loose bowel

horanshealth.deirdre@gmail.com

Children are susceptible to coughs and colds and there are probiotics available specifically for children and are suitable from birth. Some of the more common questions we get asked about probiotics are: 1: Can I just eat yoghurt which contains probiotics? Research shows that yoghurts made with probiotics often have very low levels of bacteria in them and may not help your gut bacteria. They may also contain additives including sugars, artificial sweeteners, flavouring or preservatives. 2: Do probiotics interfere with medication? There are no interactions between probiotics and common medications ( if you are taking immune suppressants you should speak with your GP before taking probiotics.) 3: Can I use them with antibiotics? Yes, just ensure you leave an hour or so between antibiotic and probiotic. Several studies have shown that they may help prevent the negative effect of these medications on your good gut bacteria. 4: Can I take probiotics while pregnant? Probiotics can be used safely while pregnant and may have benefits for both mother and baby. Ensure you seek out probiotics that have been tried and tested. For adults some of our favourites are the UDO’S range, BIO-KULT, QUEST MEGA 8 and BIOCARE. We know good bacteria are effective in digestive health but it is important to take the one to suit your specific needs. Remember a healthly gut is an essential step towards good health. As always we are happy to advise you, just call in. Until next time, stay healthy. Deirdre

movements and or constipation, bloating and excessive gas.

LOOK AFTER YOUR LIVER AND IT WILL LOOK AFTER YOU If, like most of the country, you’ve spent the last month overindulging and straying from healthy habits then you’re probably feeling a little out of sync. Sluggish metabolism, low body temperature and poor circulation all could be signs that you’re experiencing a toxic overload. Support the body’s natural cleansing and healing mechanisms by supporting your liver. As the largest solid organ in the body, the liver is responsible for functions vital to life. It processes nutrients from food, removes toxins from the body, builds proteins and makes bile. However, if not looked after correctly it can and will wear out. How do we prevent this? By detoxing with the help of Flor•Essence, a cleansing herbal tea blend. Susie Perry Debice Flor•Essence is a detoxifying blend of eight herbs. It is a very precise formulation with a synergistic effect that is much more powerful than taking the herbs individually; • Red Clover and Burdock Root, which are blood purifiers that facilitate the elimination of waste and toxins through the skin, kidneys and bowels. • Blessed Thistle and Turkish Rhubarb which increase the flow of gastric juices, aiding digestion and liver function. • Slippery Elm, which is renowned for its soothing properties. • Kelp, a great source of iodine, which helps in the regulation of weight and energy levels. • Sheep Sorrel which provides strong immune support and a good source of vitamin C. • Watercress, a rich source of chlorophyll, vitamins A and C, which has been used throughout the ages to detoxify and restore vitality. A simple cup of tea, taken as a tonic every day, can easily become an integral part of your daily routine. Just like a multivitamin, Flor•Essence® is most effective as a consistent habit. Flor•Essence® can be taken on an ongoing basis, regardless of the level being consumed. But to really see and feel the benefits we recommend taking Flor•Essence® twice a year to simply and effectively cleanse the system post-Christmas and pre summer. Flor Essence is available in Horans Health Stores. 3

The Ultimate Winter Wellness Package

HOW TO KEEP YOUR MIND AND BODY HEALTHY THIS WINTER Every New Year, we make plans to get our health back on track, be it by losing weight, sleeping more, improving your diet and exercising regularly. While these resolutions are important, taking omega-3 and vitamin D daily is one of the best ways to fight off the winter blues and keep colds and flus at bay. Omega-3 and vitamin D are probably the most talked about nutrients in nutrition, and for good reason. Both omega-3 and vitamin D offer a wide array of benefits to the body and deficiency is widespread. With this in mind, Eskimo-3 are delighted to announce the addition of NEW Eskimo-3 Advanced EPA with Vitamin D3, a high quality food supplement combining omega-3 fish oil with natural vitamin D3, two of the most beneficial nutrients in one capsule.

OMEGA-3 - ESSENTIAL TO GOOD HEALTH

The most beneficial Omega-3 fats EPA and DHA are primarily found in fresh, oily fish such as mackerel, salmon, anchovies and sardines. Your body can’t naturally produce Omega-3, so you must get these fatty acids from your diet. Surprisingly, a massive 89% of Irish people are not consuming sufficient oily fish in their diet, so often there is a need to take a good quality omega-3 fish oil. Omega-3 fatty acids are the building blocks of every living cell in the human body. They are absolutely necessary for normal health and development. Without them, cells can’t function, renew, or maintain themselves properly. Omega 3s supports brain, eye, and heart health throughout life. Omega-3s also play an important role in thinning the blood and reducing inflammation throughout the body – in the blood vessels, the joints, skin and elsewhere. Omega-3s have been found to improve numerous heart disease risk factors. There is more scientific evidence behind the cardiovascular benefits of fish oil than any other nutritional supplement. Omega-3s have been found to improve numerous heart disease risk factors. They help to reduce blood pressure, reduce triglycerides and improve blood circulation. Recent research demonstrates that consumption of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D can play a role in reducing depression. Studies have found that people who consumed fish frequently exhibited fewer depressive qualities than those who didn’t consume fish.

About our stores...

VITAMIN D - THE SUNSHINE VITAMIN

Vitamin D is fast becoming known as a “super-nutrient and is perhaps the single most underrated nutrient in the world of nutrition. No longer just an important nutrient for healthy bones, some studies have shown an association between low levels of vitamin D and certain cancers, diabetes, autoimmune diseases and cardiovascular disease. Vitamin D is crucial when it comes to activating your immune system. It helps to keep the “guards” of your immune system alert, therefore allowing you to quickly and effectively fight off invaders before they can develop into a full-blown infection. Vitamin D is also important for bone, teeth and muscle health. Keeping your bones healthy depends on your vitamin D levels as it is required for normal absorption and utilisation of both calcium and phosphorus, minerals vital to strong bones. Vitamin D also regulates the conversion of tryptophan into serotonin –your feel good hormone. Low levels are thought to be responsible for S.A.D (seasonal affective disorder), commonly referred to as “The Winter Blues”, and therefore supplementing with vitamin D during the winter months can help ease symptoms and improve mood. The need for supplemental Vitamin D has never been greater. The human body is able to produce vitamin D3, but only after sufficient exposure to the UVB rays in sunlight, therefore deficiency is often an issue for people during the winter months, when sunlight is in short supply. Taking a daily fish oil supplement, naturally rich in omega-3 with added vitamin D3 can support your heart, brain, joints, immune system, bones, mood and skin and is a simple way to safeguard your health.

ESKIMO-3: ITS WHATS ON THE INSIDE THAT COUNTS

On the market for more than two decades and with over 120 scientific studies, the Eskimo range represents probably the finest quality fish oil on the market, providing Omega-3 rich oil of legendary purity, freshness and stability. The oil is always from sustainable sources, and there is full traceability and quality control throughout the production process, from fishing boat to finished oil. This trace-ability (and accountability) has resulted in the Eskimo® range being awarded a ‘Friend Of The Sea’ certificate. Further information is available at eskimo3.ie.

Do you suffer from abdominal pain, flatulence and bloating? Don’t ignore these symptoms; help is at hand! Just like breathing in and out good digestion and regular bowel function is something we all take for granted, without even thinking about, that is until we start to experience digestive related health problems. It is estimated that between 10-20% of the population suffer from IBS symptoms, which can include abdominal pain, bloating, flatulence, irregular bowel habits, diarrhea and constipation. But rather than seek a solution, most people put up with these troublesome symptoms, viewing them as a unavoidable consequence of a stressful lifestyle, poor diet, too much caffeine and various food intolerances. Enjoy good gut health Quest’s TumBiotix is a specialist probiotic, which helps support the balance of micro flora in your gut and promotes natural bowel habits.

Each capsule contains a specialist probiotic combination of L.acidophilus and L. plantarum which encourages good digestive health and helps to alleviate problems associated with poor gut health. Effective absorption What’s more, TumBiotix is in a DR capsule format which delays the release of probiotic bacteria until it can be most effectively absorbed. The DRcaps™ protect the probiotics from the acidity of the stomach, only releasing the formula once it has reached the intestine where it is most easily absorbed. TumBiotix is also suitable for vegetarians.

LET’S TALK MENOPAUSE Let’s talk menopause with Susie Perry Debice, Nutritional Therapist and the author of Premenstrual Syndrome: The Essential Guide. There are times in every woman’s life when she is likely to experience the up’s and down’s of hormone imbalance and this is especially true leading up to and during the menopause. Susie Perry Debice explains how to achieve a smooth transition through the menopause… Growing old gracefully can be challenging especially when in the midst of the menopause plagued by hot flushes, night sweats and mood swings. Finding ways to feel your best, look your best and keep your health at its best is essential for the more mature woman.

Be Prepared

One of the best bits of advice that I can give to any woman approaching the menopause is to be prepared! We all know the menopause is going to happen, we might not know exactly when it will begin BUT generally symptoms can start to occur from as early as 45 to as late as 55. If I’ve learnt anything as a Nutritional Therapist it’s that an overzealous lifestyle and unhealthy diet can definitely set the scene for hormone imbalance and a troublesome peri-menopause. So when I say ‘be prepared’ what I mean is when you hit your early to midforties it’s time to clean up your act and opt for a smooth peri-menopause. Symptom Check: Hot flushes, Night sweats, Vaginal dryness, Low libido, Memory loss, Confusion, Feeling emotional, Headaches, Fatigue, Poor sleep, Poor skin tone.

Make positive changes

If you’re looking to max out on hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings and fatigue then just carry on slurping back the coffee, alcohol and sugary drinks. You can even crank up your stress levels too if you want to really turn

Super supplements

up the peri-menopause heat! But I’d suggest you start to cool things down by avoiding caffeine (tea, coffee, cola, energy drinks), swapping out sugar and making some positive lifestyle choices that actually start to eliminate stress from your life! Taking up regular exercise and joining a yoga or Pilates class can help to create balance in your life and this will be reflected in your hormones and improvement in symptoms.

Foods for females

At this stage of your life it’s a good idea to focus your diet on plenty of green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds which contain plenty of minerals such as calcium and magnesium for bone health. Also include plenty of orange, red and purple fruits and vegetables (especially berries) that are rich in vitamin C which helps maintain collagen levels and support more mature skin and bone health. Finally, it’s time to feast on foods that contain phyto-oestrogens such as edamame beans, soya yoghurt, tofu, soya sauce, miso, tempeh, soya milk, fennel, cucumber, flax seeds, sesame seeds, lentils, alfalfa, oats and yams. Phyto-oestrogens are plant substances capable of producing weak oestrogenic effects in the body. They work by binding to oestrogen receptor sites on our cells where they mildly mimic the activity of oestrogen. During the menopause oestrogen levels decline triggering many of the menopausal symptoms and phytooestrogens help by having a balancing effect on hormone levels and topping up oestrogen levels when they are low.

There are so many menopausal supplements to choose from that it can often be a little overwhelming. My advice would be to start with one good ‘all rounder’ supplement, take this for 1-3 months and monitor the results. One particular supplement that stands out for menopausal symptoms is Krill Oil as it can be effective for a number of the most common menopausal symptoms – hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings, tiredness and sexual desire. A new supplement called Cleanmarine MenoMin contains Omega 3 from Krill Oil (the fastest and purest delivery of omega-3 possible, surpassing traditional, highly processed fish oils) alongside B-vitamins and early studies indicate fantastic results for those suffering from a troublesome menopause. In fact a three month trial revealed statistics showing that 84% of women reported a positive effect on symptoms with 77% seeing a significant reduction in hot flushes, 66% seeing improvements in sexual desire and 82% saying it had improved their quality of life. That’s pretty good news from just two capsules a day! However severe your symptoms seem the good news is that there are plenty of natural ways to help you cope better, feel better and get your life back on track. Start with tidying up your diet and lifestyle, add in a krill oil supplement and you’ll soon feel like you are managing your menopause rather than letting your menopause mange you! For more information please call into your local Horans Health Store.

BEAT THE POST-FESTIVE SLUGGISHNESS After the festive season most people find it hard to get back to the normal routine. Refined foods, sweets, irregular eating patterns all lead to sluggishness in the bathroom. In fact, one of the most common problems I meat in my clinic is constipation or irregular bowel movements. Sometimes it is only a secondary problem, with people not realising that not moving the bowel every day is a problem. Beside the uncomfortable gut feelings it is linked with hormonal imbalances, headaches, high cholesterol and lots of immune and inflammatory conditions. Constipation caused mostly by reduced fibre in the diet and bowel flora imbalances (overgrowth of non-beneficial micro-organisms). When healthy complex carbohydrates like whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds and vegetables are replaced by chips, chocolates, candies and white flour products one can easily end up clogged up. Weight conscious people can make the mistake of eating very small amounts of food, even fasting to try to detoxify their system, so there is not enough bulk in the bowels to initiate peristalsis. Soluble and insoluble fibres are both needed to ensure proper elimination time and to feed the good bacteria in the intestines. If the bowel transit time is slowed down, toxins can get re-absorbed into the blood stream and overwhelm the liver, causing sluggishness, difficulty sleeping, chemical sensitivities and the above mentioned conditions. Long standing constipation and

bowel flora imbalances can produce IBS symptoms (bloating, cramping, diarrhoea alternating with constipation) - even lead to cancerous mutations of the bowels. Trying to avoid the uncomfortable effects of constipation, many people would reach for laxatives, and use them daily. Laxatives - whether Eva Hamilton pharmaceutical or natural herbal remedies, work similarly by aggravating the smooth muscles of the bowels or by pulling water into the colon, to soften the stool. When used regularly for long periods of time, they make the bowel lazy and dependent on the remedy. Preventing these uncomfortable and dangerous changes is the best policy by consuming a wholesome diet filled with seeds, nuts, beans, vegetables, some wholegrains and drinking plenty of water. Essential fats from cold pressed oils, oily fish, nuts, seeds and avocado are not only beneficial for your cardiovascular system, brain function and basically all cells in your body, but taken in little higher amounts they can soften the stool, making it easier to pass. Increase probiotic rich foods; natural (unsweetened!) bio-live yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut, or take a multi-strain probiotic capsule like Bio-Kult for a few months. There is a fantastic supplement available in your health stores, called Lepicol Plus – it combines the benefits of both soluble and insoluble fibres, probiotics, digestive enzymes and soothing herbs to support the entire digestive system. It has the ability to re-regulate bowel movements – whether it is constipation, diarrhoea or the alternating type of IBS you are struggling with. It is also a perfect companion for any detox regimes. Make sure to drink plenty of water with it and throughout the day.
