AROMATHERAPY AND ITS USES The term AROMATHERAPY was coined in the 1920’s to describe the use of essential oils for therapeutic purposes. In a nutshell aromatherapy means “a therapy using aromas”. The aromas come from the plant kingdom - flowers, trees, herbs and bushes. Essential oils are highly concentrated and should always be diluted before applying to the skin. Essential oils have many uses and our sense of smell, being linked to our emotions, plays the largest part in recognizing the power of aromatherapy and certain essential oils can help with various health and wellbeing issues. Essential oils are often used to promote well being on different levels – physical, mental and emotional. There are several ways of using essential oils all of them very pleasant, these include massage, bathing, compress and inhalation (never use them orally). Proper use of the oils helps to promote a more balanced lifestyle. They may also prevent you from succumbing to everyday illness and effects of stress. A balanced state of mind promotes vitality and better ability to cope with difficult events. Use of aromatherapy can also help to stimulate the immune system avoiding the “run down” feeling that can lead to cold and flu. Some of the more common everyday health issues where aromatherapy can help include: Mental Fatigue: BASIL OIL stimulates the brain and is fantastic to refresh your mental powers during a demanding day. During exams or for anybody who needs to concentrate for long periods of time. Because oil of basil is
horanshealth.deirdre@gmail.com
so strong, simply using one or two drops of this oil on a tissue is sufficient to refresh brain matter; may also be added to hot water in an oil burner for use at home or in the office. Insomnia: LAVENDER for anyone experiencing insomnia, if possible take a bath about one hour before bedtime and add 4 to 5 drops of lavender oil. No washing or scrubbing...this bath is purely for rest and relaxation. Stay as long as you feel comfortable adding more hot water if necessary. After leaving the bath, put 1 to 2 drops of NEROLI oil on the edge of your pillow or on a tissue and place it where you can breathe in the vapours. A more powerful sedative oil is MARJORAM, although the smell isn’t as pleasant as Lavender or Neroli, but it will invariably ensure a good nights’ sleep. Off Days: CLARY SAGE is great for anyone who is subject to “Off Days” when the slightest thing can turn you into a nervous wreck, may benefit from this oil. When you are feeling low it helps you to take control of your emotions. It is also known as a euphoric oil. Emotional Balancing: GERANIUM oil is very beneficial for balancing extremes, whether it’s on a physical or emotional level. Great for the bath or for use in the burner. HGHLY RECOMMENDED: PATCHOULI oil, one of the more versatile and celebrated oils, works great where there may be negative feelings such as anxiety, anger and even sadness. Pop a few drops in your oil burner to release its therapeutic properties. The strong, sweet, spicy, musky aroma of this oil also works great as a natural deodorant, just dilute a few drops in a small spray bottle with water. As always we are instore to discuss and advise you on the full range of essential oils and which ones may suit your requirements best, just call in. Until Next Time, Stay Healthy Deirdre

ASK ALEXANDER, NATURAL BEAUTY EXPERT Is the hype around the dangers of too much exposure to sunlight founded? We all know how much better everything is in the sunshine, but we have also read about the damage the sun’s rays can cause to our skin. Our bodies produce vitamin D when exposed to sunlight, which is vital to liver and kidney function. A deficiency in vitamin D can cause bone disease, depression and even heart problems. Thereafter it is most probably best to apply some sun lotion. Tell us about the range of sun care products from JASÖN? The JASÖN range of sun care products keeps the whole family safe from harmful chemicals and the sun’s damaging rays. The products are non-greasy, quick absorbing and fast acting. When considering lotions, SPF is the first thing everybody looks at, but many people do not realise that SPF actually represents the length of time you can stay out without being burnt. In other words, SPF 15 means that you can stay out 15 times longer than if you were wearing no lotion at all. What about Aloe Vera – why do people recommend that for after sun? The gel from the plant, the inner part of the leaf, is packed full of chemicals essential for human function and is the most nutrient dense part of the plant. It contains 8 essential amino acids, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, salicylic acid, sugars, saponins and sterols. The amino acids, enzymes and minerals support the body metabolism from within, salicylic acid reduces fever and inflammation, whilst when topically applied
saponins are cleansing and antiseptic and the sugars are thought to give aloe its healing properties. There are so many uses for aloe vera – soothing burns including sunburn, treating minor abrasions and bruises, fading scars, minimising razor burn, healing minor cuts, acne, eczema, psoriasis, ulcers, stings, bites.... and the list goes on! the gel can be used straight from the leaf or bought ready made in both gel or juice form. When buying products that contain aloe vera, check it is Aloe Barbadensis. Is there anything else besides using sun lotion we can be doing to protect our skin from the sun? As well as topical lotions, diet also plays a part in protecting our skin whilst basking in the sun. Antioxidants play a huge part in protecting the skin from long term UV damage. Vitamins A, C, E and D, along with beta carotene (found in spinach, carrots and sweet potatoes to name a few) and a fatty acid, EPA found in fish oils. Studies indicate that we should eat a varied diet including berries, tomatoes, greens and fish to obtain these nutrients in order to safeguard our skin.

YOUR QUESTIONS OUR ANSWERS Q
Can you recommend any good natural Iron supplement, as I find the usual ones very constipating?
Some of the symptoms of low iron include feelings of fatigue, low mood and mental sluggishness. It is important to remember that these symptoms don’t always indicate low iron levels, and, if you haven’t already, it is a good idea to have a blood test to confirm your ferritin and serum iron levels. It is important to be aware of your iron levels before supplementing as excess iron may cause other health problems. Natural supplements with supportive herbs such as FLORADIX work well for most people without causing constipation. SPATONE is another natural iron supplement. Vitamin C helps with the absorption of iron – you will need to take around 500mg with your iron
Q
By Deirdre
I have diverticulitis and cannot take psyllium husks as they cause me pain and bloating. I also have trouble with tomatoes and spicy foods. I have been taking ground flaxseeds and this seems to be ok. Any suggestions as to what else I could do, and eat, would be much appreciated
It is important to avoid a situation whereby the undigested food particles become trapped in the small pouch-like sacs that occur in the lining of the intestines. If this happens the trapped food can trigger inflammation and bacterial infection. Aloe Vera juice taken first thing in the morning and last thing before bed may help to soothe inflammation. Olive leaf extract capsules may also be beneficial. I assume you are soaking your ground flaxseed before taking it? Chia seeds, again, ground and soaked before use are worth considering as an alternative, and are even less likely to irritate your intestines.

TREATMENT AND PREVENTION OF WARTS AND VERUCCAS Generally, warts can be defined as small, rough lumps on the skin that are benign (noncancerous). They appear most often on hands and feet and unfortunately, can be easily passed from one person to Breda O’Connor another. Outwardly, Warts can look different depending on where they appear on the body and the thickness of the skin on that specific location. A wart on the sole of the foot, pushed inward by the pressure of walking, is what is known as a verruca. Whilst they can appear as a single wart or verruca, multiple warts are more common and can cause extreme discomfort whilst walking or be simply displeasing to the eye. Warts and verrucas are most common in children but many adults also suffer from multiple verruca colonies, for the same reasons. The occurrence of each wart or verruca will depend on several of the following factors; the location of the wart on the body, the strain or type of HPV virus that caused the wart to arise, immune system strength and resilience and whether you have accidently damaged the outer appearance of the wart.
As the skin cells alive in warts release thousands of different viruses, causes close skin-to-skin contact to pass on the infection to others. It is also possible for the infection to be transmitted indirectly from an object, such as a towel, or by contact with a contaminated surface, such as the surface surrounding a swimming pool. It can take weeks, or even months, for a wart or verruca to become visible after you have caught the initial infection. The time between infection and the onset of symptoms is known as the ‘incubation period’. Most warts clear up without treatment. However, the time it takes for a wart to disappear will vary from person to person. Warts may last longer in older children and adults and can be incredibly resistant to the typical treatments provided by healthcare professionals, such as freezing or over-thecounter medications. The immune system is the body's ultimate defence system. It helps to protect the body from disease, bacteria and viruses and is vital to the treatment of warts and verrucas .If the immune system is not in optimum condition the body will not be able to fight the viruses involved. Treatments are far more likely to be successful if the immune system is also fit and healthy and helping the fight. Protein, antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and certain vitamins, and minerals are all essential to a healthy immune system. Research studies
have shown that a deficiency of high-quality protein can result in depletion of immune cells, inability of the body to make antibodies, and other immune-related problems. The majority of people who struggle with warts and veruccas are living exceptionally busy lives and eat merely to satisfy hunger. One can assume that the food they are eating is packed with enough nutrition to both give energy and maintain optimum health. Unfortunately this is not the case as even high quality foods lose a lot of its original goodness during processing and cooking. The result is a vitamin and mineral deficiency which is hinders the body’s ability to fight against strong viral strains present in warts and veruccas. Due to our ever-demanding lives, it has never been more important to care for our extra nutritional needs through quality supplements and eating food that suits our personal digestive system. Many of the B-vitamins and the fat-soluble vitamins, vitamin A ,vitamin E and vitamin K are important to overall immune health and essential for fighting the presence of warts and veruccas. I will be available in Horan’s Health shop in the Square Tralee on July 30th & 1st for food sensitivity and nutrition testing. For an appointment on these dates contact Horans’s The Square Tralee on 085 2542471. 5

LIKE AN INSTANT REMEDY FOR SUNBURN?
Lavender essential oil is a well known remedy for treating burns. For that reason it is a good idea to keep a bottle in your first aid box or press at home. For sunburn add 3 drops to 100 mls of cool boiled water and dab on the affected areas with a cotton wool pad. Leave to dry naturally. Alternatively, treat yourself to a bottle of Atlantic Aromatic’s Lavender water. 100 ml €4.95 from your local healthstore. For safety, do a patch test first. In the event of a serious sunburn event, keep well hydrated and seek appropriate professional help if necessary.

WANT TO PROTECT YOUR SKIN FROM WITHIN? Studies have shown that taking a course of Beta Carotene, starting 2 weeks before you go away and continuing the course while you are away may help to protect your skin against the harmful effects of the sun. You will still need to use your sun protection factor topically also. Beta Carotene is a precursor for Vitamin A (not suitable if you are pregnant). It is a powerful anti oxidant and studies show it may help to give you a golden tan. Enjoy your holidays! Catherine, Cashel

LOSE THE WEIGHT - NOT THE ENERGY! GoCal® Plus Saffron Slim contains a potent combination of bioactive ingredients including, Saffron, Green Tea, Apple Cider Vinegar, Nettle and Dandelion plus Chromium for maintaining optimum calorie control.
About our star ingredient Saffron: Saffron has a natural satiating effect on the human body i.e. it makes you feel fuller for longer. Appetite is stimulated by hormones, in particular Dopamine. As you eat, Serotonin is released to halt the release of dopamine and tells the body that it's had enough food. Low levels of Serotonin or a low number of Serotonin receptors weakens this process and can lead to overeating and weight gain. Daily supplementation of Saffron helps boost Serotonin levels and helps reduce the need to overeat.
Go Cal® Plus Saffron Slim: • Helps maintain fluid balance • Supports normal blood glucose levels Recommended use: Take 2 tablets daily with water, preferably at breakfast or prior to mid-day. GoCal® Plus Saffron Slim should be taken as part of a varied diet. For specialist dietary advice, ask a trained representative at your local stockist. Did you know: Green Tea is a natural source of caffeine and may not be suitable for individuals with caffeine allergies or high blood pressure. Note: Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. Do not take if pregnant or lactating.
Improved Mood Low Serotonin levels are also involved in mood disorders. Safranal causes the brain to release an abundance of Serotonin the “happy hormone”. Those who are positive are less likely to overeat and binge.
GoCal® is available in your local Horans Health Stores.

SOOTHE DRY, RED, ITCHY AND ECZEMA PRONE SKIN NATURALLY If you’re eczema-prone, or you just suffer from dry, itchy skin, you’ll know that it’s a real pain – quite literally. Uncomfortable, irritating, not to mention utterly inconvenient because flare-ups always happen when you least want them. When it comes to problematic skin, no matter what your age, finding the right intensive cream, and then incorporating a good skincare regime into y our daily routine, can prevent certain conditions developing and can even reduce steroid use in those with eczema-prone skin.
