STRESS – HOW TO REDUCE IT USING YOUR DIET Millions of years ago, your body was designed to react quickly to danger. Like wild animals you were on constant alert so you could run or fight if threatened. When your brain thinks your life is in danger it stimulates the release of adrenaline and cortisol This fight or flight response is incredibly clever and thoroughly MARILYN GLENVILLE efficient. It provides instant energy for 5-10 minutes allowing you to react swiftly to dangerous situations.
D Tour Naturally
You may not be able to control the stress but you can control how it affects you physically and also you can make sure you are not making it worse. There is a chance that your pattern of eating is subconsciously telling your body that it is under even more stress. If your blood sugar levels fluctuate (as they do even more so for women), your body will be releasing adrenaline which is the same hormone it releases when you are under stress. Try to keep your blood sugar levels and energy levels stable by eating something every three hours. Eat breakfast, lunch and dinner plus a snack mid-morning and one midafternoon, with no longer than three hours between.
These days, many of us live under chronic stress. But our bodies can’t distinguish between late trains, missed appointments, spiralling debt, infuriating work colleagues, family disputes and the truly life-threatening stress it gears up to challenge. So it reacts exactly the same as it’s always done.
This will stop those roller-coaster highs and cravings for sweet foods. Because your blood sugar isn’t allowed to drop, your body will no longer have to ask you for a quick fix. As your blood sugar steadies, so will your mood swings. As your adrenaline levels reduce you will automatically start to feel happier and calmer inside.
Stress Glenville can give you a number of symptoms including Marilyn moods swings, anxiety, irritability, nervousness, aggressive women’s outbursts, health. fatigue, palpitations, forgetfulness, anxiety,
Also certain nutrients can also help reduce stress levels. These include the B vitamins especially B5 for stress relief and energy, magnesium - nature’s tranquiliser for relaxation and sleep, chromium for blood sugar balance, Siberian ginseng which acts as a tonic to the adrenal glands and L-theanine for reducing stress and anxiety.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE Monitoring and maintaining your health is key to continuing a healthy, happy, active life. It is important to observe and listen to the messages your body sends, and respond sensitively to them. This brings a sense of achievement and well being. It should not be difficult to enjoy natural good health. We all know that eating a healthy diet DOES make you feel better, controlling your weight ALLOWS you to look and feel better, and keeping fit DOES make you more energetic. Any efforts you make, quickly become apparent, and this gives you the incentive to keep up the good work. BASIC ESSENTIALS: Vitamins, Minerals, Fibre and Water are some of the basic essentials of any balanced diet. Making sure your diet contains adequate amounts of all of them should be one of your most important priorities. If your diet is lacking in these then you may choose to supplement with some of the following: • ANTI-OXIDANTS: are especially important for health, as they kill oxidants, the bad guys which may cause declining vision, wrinkling skin, poor digestion, lack of energy, worsening cardiovascular health and so on. Anti-oxidants are found in carrots, tomatoes, fruit and vegetables – especially broccoli and peppers. As well as eating these foods, it’s well worth looking at some of the excellent anti-oxidant supplements available, such as CO-ENZYME Q10 (30-60mg per day), or any of the SUPERFOODS, such as WHEATGRASS, SPIRULINA and POWERGREENS (all of which are available in powder or capsule form)
horanshealth.deirdre@gmail.com
• VITAMIN B: Low levels of vitamin B can lead to emotional stress, fatigue and irritability. They also help with your tolerance levels and coping capabilities. • VITAMIN C: often dubbed the “healing” vitamin. Can help to mend wounds and helps to maintain collagen which helps lubricate the skin so, to a degree, it could be called an “anti-wrinkle vitamin”. Since the need for collagen regeneration increases with age, you require greater amounts as you get older. Vitamin C also helps the body’s immune system to fight infections and allergies. • CALCIUM: essential for long term bone health, there are many calcium supplements on the market, and some are combined with other nutrients for better absorption. We are always happy to advise on one to suit your specific needs. • FIBRE: Roughage is a particularly important part of any healthy diet; it keeps your gut healthy and promotes regular bowel movements, which helps to prevent the distension and bloating that many people experience. Fibre can also give you the feeling of fullness and satisfaction that may help control your appetite, combat cravings and avoid the dreaded binges. Foods that are rich in fibre include, wholegrains (brown rice, wholemeal pasta) dark green leafy vegetables, pulses (peas, beans and lentils). There are also some excellent fibre supplements available such as LEPICOL, PSYLLIUM HUSK or MAXICOL – simply mix the powder with water and consume once or twice a day (it is very important to increase your water intake when taking a fibre supplement) These are just a few ideas you might find useful if your intention is to maintain or achieve “Naturally Good Health”. Call in-store and have a chat, as always we are happy to discuss your specific needs Until Next Time, Stay Healthy Deirdre

TAKE THE 10 DAY WELLNESS PROGRAM WITH FLOR-ESSENCE What is Flor-Essence®?
The 8 Key Herbs in Flor-Essence®
Flor-Essence® is an ancient, trusted, herbal remedy used by the Ojiwbe Native Americans for hundreds of years. With a blend of eight herbs, it is a very precise formulation with a synergistic effect that is much more powerful than taking the herbs individually. FlorEssence® does not provide an instant purgative effect; rather, with consistent use, its eight ingredients identify, gather and flush toxins out of the body.
The unique synergistic properties of the 8 powerful herbs help to cleanse and condition the body - Burdock Root; Sheep Sorrel; Slippery Elm Bark; Watercress; Red Clover; Blessed Thistle; Kelp; Turkish Rhubarb Root. Together, in precise amounts, these 8 ingredients become an entirely new entity unto itself, enhancing each other’s benefits to create a powerful synergistic healing effect.
As easy to take as a cup of tea A simple cup of tea, taken as a tonic every day, Flor-Essence® can easily become an integral part of your daily routine. Just like a multivitamin, Flor-Essence® is most effective as a consistent habit. Flor-Essence® can be taken on an ongoing basis, regardless of the level being consumed. But to really see and feel the benefits we recommend taking Flor-Essence® twice a year using our 10 Day Wellness Program to simply and effectively cleanse the system.
How to use Flor-Essence® • It is best to take Flor-Essence at least 30 minutes before eating, or at bedtime. • Dilute the liquid with an equal amount of filtered hot water, and sip slowly. • Consume at least 2 litres of non-chlorinated or fluoridated water daily (this includes herbal teas) to help flush out the toxins released by Flor-Essence. Avoid caffeine, alcohol and processed foods. For cleansing: Take 50mls 1-2 times daily, preferably before breakfast and before bedtime, as the best cleansing occurs during sleep. For chronic conditions: Take 120mls twice daily. For serious conditions: 120mls can be taken up to 4 times daily. Visit your local Horans Health Store for more information on how to begin your 10 day Flor-Essence® Wellness Program today.

YOUR QUESTIONS OUR ANSWERS Q
My nails keep cracking. I have had my blood tests done and all was normal. What would you suggest to help this?
Brittle, cracking nails are often a sign of nutrient deficiency. Firstly, ensure you are eating a well balanced diet. Some supplements to think about are vitamin A, B vitamin, calcium or iron. You can get all of these together in a good quality multivitamin such as SOLO MULTIFIFTY. A very good nail formulation is SKIN. NY POWER NAILS which contains all the nutrients to strengthen your nails. You should also pay attention to your digestive system as you may not be digesting/absorbing nutrients from your food. If you think this is an issue then you would benefit from a DIGESTIVE ENZYME, one capsule taken before each meal for a couple of months. The information contained in this column is not a substitute for medical advice and you should always consult with your GP.

I am going on holiday abroad shortly and was wondering if there was any supplement I could take to help prevent mosquitoes and other insect bites?
500mg of B1 is recommended taken every day for two weeks before you go and during your trip. Another option is a high strength garlic supplement, again start taking a couple of weeks before you go. There are also some excellent natural insect repellent sprays available in store such as midget cream, vogel insect repellent and incognito sprays.

SILICOL GEL
Our Hero Product this month is a very easy choice... SILICOL GEL. This amazingly effective product is used to treat gastrointestinal disorders which are usually caused by irritants and harmful toxic substances. When the gastrointestinal tract is disturbed it could result in disorders such as heartburn, reflux, vomiting and IBS symptoms such as nausea, flatulence, stomach ache and diarrhoea. It is an ideal product to pack if you are heading off this summer as travel or change of diet can also upset the digestive system. SILICOL GEL helps to form a protective, soothing coating over the lining of the stomach and intestines. simply take 1 tablespoon three times a day before meals, suitable for over 12years of age. Deirdre, Manor
DO YOU SUFFER FROM COLD SORES? Do you get a breakout in extreme heat or cold, during a particularly stressful time or when your immune system is compromised? Cold sores are painful blisters that form on or around the lips. These are caused by a virus that lies dormant in the base of the spine. Cole sores are highly contagious. L-Lysine is an Amino Acid that mimics the food the virus needs to live on, while in fact it starves the virus. By taking 1000mg of L-Lysine a day (away from food), it may stop an outbreak of cold sores. This is especially useful when you know you have a stressful time ahead (e.g. exams or a wedding) or you are heading to the sun or skiing. Should you feel the first tingle of the cold sore, take 1000mg of L-Lysine 3 times a day (take each tablet away from food - about an hour before or after a meal). Catherine, Cashel
SEASONAL TIP June is the perfect time to start taking Tancare from Pharma Nord. Just one capsule a day can help maintain skin, vision and mucous membranes.
DID YOU KNOW? Marigold heals irritated & sore skin such as eczema, wounds and rashes. Comfrey speeds up the healing process of cuts, scars & slow healing wounds. Chickweed is brilliant for relieving skin irritations like insect stings/bites, reduces inflammation in acne/spots, blisters, chicken pox etc. Mary 6

MY GO TO PRODUCT CASTOR OIL
Do you suffer from alopecia, thinning hair, or fancy improving your eyebrows? If so, Castor Oil could become your new ‘go to’ product. Choose a good quality brand - I favour Pukka’s Organic Castor Oil €15.25. Being a warming oil, Castor Oil can improve circulation on the area it is applied to. This can encourage hair growth. Gently warm some and apply it to the problem areas. Don’t worry - it wont cause hair growth on areas that don’t naturally produce hair! Massage it gently into your scalp, or use a cotton bud to apply some your eyebrows. Repeat for two weeks at least. Do a patch test first. Caroline, Mitchelstown
DID YOU KNOW? Do you know Apple cider vinegar improves digestion and nutrient assimilation. R a w Apple cider vinegar with the mother contains beneficial enzymes. Add 1tsp into a cup of warm water before meals Sarah, Limerick
SUFFERING FROM LOW ENERGY LEVELS? I tend to suffer a lot from low energy levels and tiredness. I decided to take solo multififty capsules. They contain all your essential multivitamins and nutrients plus Co q 10. The difference after a few days was great, my energy levels were up and my mood too! Only 1 capsule, I took it every morning after breakfast with a glass of water. It's totally natural and safe, I would definitely recommend it for all ages. Kay, Tralee
TOP TIP Back to that time of year ”exam stress”. By burning 2-3 drops of Geranium oil it helps balances emotions. It can reduce stress & treat anxiety in both children and adults. Its calming & uplifting. Catherine, Fermoy
SIMPLE STEPS TO A SUMMER BODY WITH APPLE CIDER VINEGAR MEGA From eating protein to taking Apple Cider Vinegar, Nutritionist Kerry O’Connor reveals how you can get your body bikini-ready.
our waist circumference and our triglycerides naturally just by taking one tablet a day helps make it that bit easier to keep up the good work.
Apple Cider vinegar is long established as a natural remedy for so many conditions from arthritis to diabetes. At this time of year though with the longer stretch in the evenings and the taste of summer in the air we tend to look to Apple Cider Vinegar for its weight loss benefits and the promise of helping us to feel comfortable in our bikini bodies.
We can also help ourselves to lose weight by adding a few extra habits into our day.
Apple Cider Vinegar has been shown to act as a natural appetite suppressant thereby reducing our daily intake of calories. It controls our blood sugar levels making it easier to stick to healthy eating and makes us less inclined to reach for the sugary snacks. It also stimulates our metabolism which can make you burn fat faster due to its high concentrations of organic acids and enzymes. For those of us who find it hard to swallow Apple Cider Vinegar liquid, Apple Cider Vinegar Mega from New Nordics is the easy solution to this dilemma. One tablet a day gives us a healthy dose of fermented ACV which when combined with the extra ingredients of dandelion and globe artichoke will help reduce bloating and remove excess fluid and toxins from the body, exactly what we need on those sunny days. Apple Cider Vinegar Mega has introduced the addition of chromium into each tablet, chromium plays a big part in controlling our sugar cravings and balancing our blood sugar levels which is an added benefit in maintaining a healthy eating plan. As we all know there is no such thing as a quick fix and Apple Cider Vinegar Mega alongside our Bikini Challenge and 30 day motivational wall chart is a tool that we can use to help us get focused and inspire us to stick to our healthy eating plan. The fact that our cravings are reduced, that we feel fuller and that we’re burning abdominal fat and reducing
The latest guidelines for greater health now involves eating up to 10 fruit and veg portions a day instead of the previously recommended 5, when you think about it, you wouldn’t have time to snack or overeat if you were eating 10 portions a day. Drinking water half an hour before eating and getting rid of sugar from our diets are two of the best ways to lose weight. Eating protein (beans, pulses, nuts & seeds, spirulina, eggs and meat) with every meal keeps you feeling fuller for longer and reduces snacking. Lifting weights 3 times a week encourages the body to burn fat and stops your metabolism from slowing down as well as keeping you toned. As always a combination of exercise and a healthy diet are the cornerstones for weight loss but the addition of Apple Cider Vinegar Mega helps support the body to maximise the fat burning and minimise the cravings that can sometimes make it hard to stick to a new healthy eating plan. Try the 30 Day Bikini Challenge, what have you got to lose…… !! New Nordic Apple Cider Mega is available in your local Horans Health Store.

NUTRITION With every new day comes the important decision regarding what we put into our bodies, yet rarely do we recognise the true importance of such a decision. Often it is a decision taken with little thought. We tend to eat on-the-go, grabbing anything filling that can be eaten with haste. This allows us to continue living our fast-paced lives until we need to eat again for energy. Breda O’Connor In this way, a cycle forms which can be difficult to break. There is exceptional truth to the well-known phrase, we are what we eat. We eat good quality food to live longer and fuller lives, prevent diseases and to maintain healthy weight. Our nutritional wellbeing, our mental and physical health and our all-important energy levels depend almost completely on what we eat. The nutrition we get from our food is the fuel providing all the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals it needs to work its best. In addition to this, people should consider the added complication of having poor absorption which leaves them in the position that despite eating a good quality and varied diet they are left feeling tired and generally bloated and uncomfortable after meals. A likely culprit for this is having low digestive enzymes. For some people this is a temporary deficiency and can be corrected by taking digestive enzymes supplements before eating for several short months.
A small number of people will need the digestive enzymes on a long-term basis but will feel much better by taking them consistently. The digestive enzymes allow the body to digest the food easily and absorb the many vital vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and micro nutrients from each meal. By eating good quality food that does not cause health problems (for example; headaches, skin rashes, joint pain, and respiratory problems) and by having good absorption we can go a long way to having a healthy body for life. I am available in Horan’s Health shop in the Square Tralee for food sensitivity testing and also vitamin and mineral deficiency testing on June 23rd and 24th. For appointments on those days please contact Sarah or Clover in store or on 085 254 2471 and they will be pleased to help you. For appointments with me on other dates, you can contact me on 087 277 2955.

• Also contains mucilage, a gel-forming fibre, that helps the absorption of nutrients in the intestine.

HEART DISEASE IS STILL THE BIGGEST KILLER IN IRELAND Heart disease is responsible for approximately one third of all deaths in Ireland and it’s not just men who are at risk, says nutritionist Nicola Murphy. The fact that heart disease is the biggest single killer of women in Ireland is a shocking statistic! It kills three times more women than breast cancer, with heart attacks and strokes still far too common. Surveys show that women don’t even realize this fact. The good news however is that preventative steps can be taken to significantly reduce this risk. Maintaining healthy blood cholesterol levels and stabilizing blood pressure are essential to better heart health and reducing the risk of stroke and heart attacks. Cholesterol often unfairly receives plenty of bad press. It is often demonized but the truth is we need cholesterol in our bodies to function properly. It’s involvement in hormone production and in the manufacture of Vitamin D, are
just two vital benefits. We hear a lot about the “good” HDL and “bad” LDL types of cholesterol but it is the LDL form that people need to be concerned about. The trouble begins when LDL cholesterol levels are too high and become oxidized or attacked by free radicals. This oxidized LDL cholesterol forms a plaque which can build up on the walls of the arteries, narrowing the arteries and making it harder for blood to flow. It can even block the flow of blood. Plaque increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart disease and stroke.
HDL cholesterol is referred to the “good” Cholesterol due to its anti-inflammatory action and its positive effect on LDL levels. Overall it seems to have a protective effect on the heart. So the aim is to reduce and protect LDL levels and increase HDL levels.
So what is the best way to achieve healthy cholesterol levels? Statins are widely used in the management of cholesterol but they don’t al- ways suit everyone. Also many people also want to take a more natural approach. Improvements to diet, reducing stress and increasing exercise will all have a beneficial impact. However many people need a little extra help to get their cholesterol levels back to healthy levels. Red Sterol complex incorporates red yeast rice in its natural form. It also combines it with plant sterols beta sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol and brassicasterol providing a powerful complex to maintain healthy cholesterol levels. Higher
Nature’s Red Sterol Complex also contains Cinnamon bark and Vitamin E.
What is this Red Yeast rice? Red yeast rice is a naturally fermented food eaten traditionally for many years in China. This is rice that has been fermented by the red yeast Monascus purpureus. For centuries it has been used in China as a spice and food colorant. Red yeast rice contains naturally occurring monakalins which give the therapeutic benefits. Plant sterols have also been proven to maintain normal cholesterol levels. Plant sterols are natural plant fats found in many fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and vegetable oils.
Why add in Cinnamon bark? Well cinnamon bark helps support a healthy cardiovascular system. It has also been shown to be beneficial in balancing blood sugar levels. Vitamin E, the major fat-soluble anti- oxidant is a free radical scavenger which contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress So, overall Red Sterol Complex may help maintain healthy cholesterol levels. ANXIETY
- A NATURAL HUMAN REACTION Anxiety, a natural human reaction, serves an important survival function and is activated whenever a person perceives danger or threat. It is completely normal to worry about things in your day-to-day life, but excessive anxiety can become a disabling disorder. Symptoms of anxiety can include: headaches, diarrhoea, fatigue, rapid heart beat and breathing, digestive disorders, sleeping problems and muscle tension.
Dietary Guidelines Balancing blood sugar levels is very important for reducing anxiety levels. The following recommendations help to support healthy blood sugar levels and provide nutrients to support the nervous system.
Eat little and often - rather than eating three large meals a day.
Increase wholegrains - e.g. oats, brown rice, wholemeal bread and pasta. These help to balance blood sugar levels and are a good source of B vitamins. Try to eat good quality protein with every meal - e.g. fish, poultry, eggs, nuts, seeds, lentils and beans.
Try Balance for Nerves, support for the nervous system. Ideal support when the going gets tough. A unique formulation with B vitamins, magnesium and theanine. Ideal support when the going gets tough.
Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables - try to eat at least five portions a day. Green leafy vegetables are a good source of magnesium. Increase foods rich in omega 3 essential fatty acids - e.g. salmon, mackerel, herring, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds and flax seeds.
Concentration Support, for mental performance and the nervous system. Ideal during periods of stress or when concentration and focus is a must.
