I had my baby over a year ago and since then my hair has gotten very thin. I am not breastfeeding anymore is there anything I could take to help thicken and strengthen it?
Ensure you have a good balanced diet and pay your GP a visit to have simple blood tests done. Some of the natural supplements which can help strengthen the hair include HAIR VOLUME which has biotin and zinc along with amino acids which activates the life processes of hair follicle cells. SILICA PLUS is another product which gets good results and promotes healthy hair (and nails). One of our favourite products here in the health store is SKIN.NY made from wild Irish seaweed, bamboo silica, marine collagen, zinc and B-vitamins which act quickly to nourish the hair follicles. There may be other contributory factors such as stress, poor digestion or hormonal imbalances which we will be happy to advise you on, just call in. The information contained in this column is not a substitute for medical advice and you should always consult with your GP.

I have read a lot recently about the importance of taking antioxidants. Can you tell me what they are actually for and are they necessary?
ANTIOXIDENTS are especially important for health, as they kill oxidants, the bad guys which may cause declining vision, wrinkling skin, poor digestion, lack of energy, worsening cardiovascular health and so on...Antioxidants can be found in fruit and vegetables such as carrots, tomatoes, broccoli and peppers. As well as including these in your diet it is also worth checking out some of the excellent anti-oxidant supplements available such as: CO ENZYME Q10 (30mg to 60mg a day) or any of the SUPERFOODS such as WHEATGRASS, SPIRULINA and POWERGREENS (all of which are available in capsule or powder form)

Magnesium for Muscles: As well as a great sleeping aid, magnesium also helps your body’s muscles function better while also increasing energy levels and workout endurance. Because of this, magnesium may help ease muscle cramps and speed up the recovery process. On average an adult should consume 400-500mg magnesium daily. Magnesium is naturally found in roasted almonds, cashews, and peanuts, as well as rice, beans, spinach, and broccoli. You can also use a magnesium spray, epsom salts or a food supplement to increase your daily intake of magnesium.

Tried and tested!
Welcome to 2016.... Most of us have set New Years resolutions, and for the majority of us, we want to eat healthier and lose weight..... Even though last year (2015) we ate a full box or two of Chocolates to ourselves. Well now it’s time to right the wrongs of Christmas. We are constantly hearing the benefits of green tea; how it’s great for water retention, helps to burn fat, contains antioxidants which are good for anti ageing and keeps us healthier, etc. but my problem is that I don’t like the taste of Green Tea. I tried the NATURE’S PHARM GREEN TEA – which can be taken hot or cold. I found adding 1 ¼ tsp of NATURE’S PHARM GREEN TEA to my 1.5 litre of water, gave my water a nice lemonade taste; which I found easy to drink throughout the day! Over a 3 week period, I lost 6 pounds; but weight aspect aside, I felt much healthier, I had loads of energy, my skin was glowing, and I didn’t feel as stressed. Why don’t you try it and let me know how you get on through www.facebook.com/horanshealthstoremanorwest More exciting Trials Next Month! Regards, Gemma

BEAT THE POST-FESTIVE SLUGGISHNESS After the festive season most people find it hard to get back to the normal routine. Refined foods, sweets, irregular eating patterns all lead to sluggishness in the bathroom. In fact, one of the most common problems I meat in my clinic is constipation or irregular bowel movements. Sometimes it is only a secondary problem, with Eva Hamilton people not realising that not moving the bowel every day is a problem. Beside the uncomfortable gut feelings it is linked with hormonal imbalances, headaches, high cholesterol and lots of immune and inflammatory conditions. Constipation caused mostly by reduced fibre in the diet and bowel flora imbalances (overgrowth of non-beneficial micro-organisms). When healthy complex carbohydrates like whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds and vegetables are replaced by chips, chocolates, candies and white flour products one can easily end up clogged up. Weight conscious people can make the mistake of eating very small amounts of food, even fasting to try to detoxify their system, so there is not enough bulk in the bowels to initiate peristalsis. Soluble and insoluble fibres are both needed to ensure proper elimination time and to feed the good bacteria in the intestines. If the bowel transit time is slowed down, toxins can get reabsorbed into the blood stream and overwhelm the liver, causing 10
sluggishness, difficulty sleeping, chemical sensitivities and the above mentioned conditions. Long standing constipation and bowel flora imbalances can produce IBS symptoms (bloating, cramping, diarrhoea alternating with constipation) - even lead to cancerous mutations of the bowels. Trying to avoid the uncomfortable effects of constipation, many people would reach for laxatives, and use them daily. Laxatives whether pharmaceutical or natural herbal remedies, work similarly by aggravating the smooth muscles of the bowels or by pulling water into the colon, to soften the stool. When used regularly for long periods of time, they make the bowel lazy and dependent on the remedy. Preventing these uncomfortable and dangerous changes is the best policy by consuming a wholesome diet filled with seeds, nuts, beans, vegetables, some wholegrains and drinking plenty of water. Essential fats from cold pressed oils, oily fish, nuts, seeds and avocado are not only beneficial for your cardiovascular system, brain function and basically all cells in your body, but taken in little higher amounts they can soften the stool, making it easier to pass. Increase probiotic rich foods; natural (unsweetened!) bio-live yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut, or take a multi-strain probiotic capsule like Bio-Kult for a few months. There is a fantastic supplement available in your health stores, called Lepicol Plus – it combines the benefits of both soluble and insoluble fibres, probiotics, digestive enzymes and soothing herbs to support the entire digestive system. It has the ability to re-regulate bowel movements – whether it is constipation, diarrhoea or the alternating type of IBS you are struggling with. It is also a perfect companion for any detox regimes. Make sure to drink plenty of water with it and throughout the day.
VITAMIN B DEFICIENCY IT can be from the rush up to Christmas, the in-laws over the Christmas or figuring out how you pay for Christmas in the new year but all of these can all lead to Vitamin B deficiency.
of allergies, arthritis and asthma. Deficiency includes acne, arthritis, cracks or sores on the mouth and lips. Carpal tunnel syndrome has been linked to a deficiency of vitamin B6 as well. Antidepressants, estrogen therapy and oral contraceptives may increase the need for vitamin B6.
It can be just the general stresses of life of the thoughts of children having to go through pre junior cert or pre-leaving exams in the following weeks that just wears us down but the B vitamins are the ones must susceptible to be lost from the body.
Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) is need to prevent anemia. It aids folic acid in regulating the formation of red blood cells and helps the utilization of iron. Assists memory and learning ability. Of special benefit to the elderly and those with digestive disorders. Strict vegetarians require vitamin B12 supplementation as largest source is found almost exclusively in animal tissues.
In fact those teenagers could do with Vitamin B Complex ahead of their mocks and the real thing as it does have a calming effect on the body and mind.
Biotin plays a key role in the body. It supports the health of the skin, nerves, digestive tract and cells.
You read a lot about Vitamin B Complex but maybe are afraid to ask what each of the vitamins does.
Folacin (or folic acid) is considered a brain food and is needed for energy production, the formation of red blood cells and strengthens immunity. It is helpful for anxiety. Deficiency can be caused by inadequate consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables. Oral contraceptives may increase the need for folic acid. Alcohol also can act as an enemy to folic acid absorption.
Vitamin B1 (thiamine) enhances circulation, carbohydrate metabolism, brain function and learning capacity. As an antioxidant, it protects against degenerative effects of aging, alcohol consumption and smoking. Thiamine deficiency include constipation, fatigue, forgetfulness, irritability and nervousness. Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) is necessary for red blood cell formation, aids in metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Deficiency symptoms include cracks and sores at the corners of the mouth. Vitamin B3 (niacin) is for circulation and healthy skin. Aids in functioning of the nervous system. A useful memory enhancer. Deficiency includes canker sores, depression, dizziness, fatigue and headaches. Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) known as the “antistress vitamin”. Plays a role in the production of the adrenal hormones and formation of antibodies, aids in vitamin utilization, and helps convert fats, carbohydrates and proteins into energy. Required by all cells in the body and is concentrated in the organs. Deficiency may cause fatigue, headache and nausea.
Naturespharm Vitamin B Complex also contains Vitamin C which aids in the production of anti-stress hormones and is needed for metabolism of folic acid and the absorption of iron. The body cannot manufacture vitamin C and must therefore get it from the diet or in supplemental form. Naturespharm Vitamin B Complex also contains magnesium. Two thirds of all magnesium in our body is found in our bones, some of it being used a storage site in the bone which the body can draw upon in times of poor dietary supply. Magnesium is sometimes regarded as a “smoothie” mineral, since it has the ability to relax our muscles. Our nerves also depend upon magnesium to avoid becoming overexcited, and this aspect of magnesium links this mineral to maintenance of healthy blood pressure. It assists in calcium and potassium uptake. L-Theanine is also in our Vitamin B Complex. L-Theanine is an amino acid that is found almost exclusively in the green tea plant as a free amino acid. It acts as a gentle relaxant. Helpful for anxiety, hyperactivity, emotional balance and stressrelated disorders.
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) benefits both physical and mental health. Acts as a mild diuretic, reducing the symptoms of PMS. It’s required by the nervous system and is needed for normal brain function and for normal cellular growth. Helpful in the treatment

Nutrient deficiencies 11
Winter tips from Head-to-Toe By Wholefoods nutritionist Julie Walsh Head Headaches and migraines are common at this time of year, as we are more stressed working and getting around in the darker, shorter days. We also don’t drink enough water coming into the colder season and often become dehydrated. Terra Nova’s Pro-Peptase is excellent for inflammatory conditions such as this. Other helpful remedies include peppermint oil capsules, Quest CurQuMax and Higher Nature True Food Magnesium – but remember different remedies work for different people and a combination of remedies may work best for some. Drink plenty of fluids, get some rest and burn some soothing essential oils such as Absolute Aromas Relaxation.
Nose Congestion in the nasal passages can be very painful, and the mucous isn’t fun for you or your friends around you as you sneeze and snort your way through it! A.Vogel’s Plantago is great for dissolving that mucous and is taken internally. Frequent users refer to that particular herb as “The Snot Buster” – need I say any more?! A.Vogel Sinuforce is a great blend of saline and essential oils for immediate relief, and is used as a nasal spray. Absolute Aromas essential oil Breathe Easy is a great decongestant when burned, or used in a diffuser. Diffusers are especially useful where children are concerned as they use no naked flames, and are fun to watch also!
Mouth Mouth ulcers are common over the winter period, as we are not consuming enough Vitamin C. To prevent them, take a high strength Vitamin C such as Quest 1000mg. If you are already suffering try Higher Nature Fizzy C – it will provide immediate relief if you hold in the mouth or gargle. The Herpes virus often rears its ugly head at this time of year also in the form of cold sores. Both A.Vogel Echinaforce and Sambucol with Black Elderberry are useful for combating this virus. Long term, you should consider taking lysine (an amino acid) that is usually deficient in those who suffer cold sores regularly. Try Quest L-Lysine 500mg, and take 1-2 tablets daily. A.Vogel Biopropolis can be applied topically to cold sores, even at the ‘tingle’ stage. Frequent sufferers should use it as a lip balm as a preventative measure.
You simply breathe in through the device slowly. Those who suffer with chest infections frequently should consider taking a tonic for the lungs. Herbetom Pulm is a concentrated blend of herbal extracts and nutrients well known for their action on the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract. A.Vogel Bronchoforce (formerly Ivy Thyme) is great for dissolving mucous in the chest also. For those who like the texture and sensation of a cough syrup – A.Vogel Bronchosan may be your preference.
Stomach Winter viruses can play havoc with your digestive system. Probiotics are commonly known for their use after antibiotics, but can also be used to aid digestion generally. Certain strains are more powerful than others, so discuss your individual needs with your health store assistant. Quest probiotics such as Mega8biotix, Immune Biotix and Platinum Probiotic provide a generous supply of the important strains required at this time, and do not require refrigeration.
Limbs Aches and pains are commonplace with a cold or flu. Sometimes it’s hard to move! A.Vogel Atrogel provides natural relief and has been compared to Ibuprofen in terms of its anti-inflammatory action. Nelson’s Bath & Massage Oil’s is another option, and because it can be used as both a massage balm and a bath oil, it is very economical. 4Pain is a class 1 medical device, which acts as an aid to blood circulation and is simply attached to your clothing and worn discreetly. It is safe to use alongside medication (except if you and/ or your partner has a pacemaker).
Toes Chilblains can be a curse to many in the cold temperatures. With little on the market topically due to current legislation, try this ‘old wives tale’ – A couple of drops of Atlantic Aromatics Peppermint oil in a euro sized blob of Optima Aloe Vera Gel and massage in to the feet. Trust me, it works! Quest’s Kyolic Garlic is great for blood circulation, which can cause chilblains when it is underperforming. As an added bonus, Kyolic Garlic can help fight infections too!
Throat Nothing screams “I’m sick” louder than a sore, hoarse throat! Sambucol have introduced new lozenges which are delicious and provide soothing relief while on the go. They contain Vitamin C, Zinc, honey and the powerful herb Black Elderberry. Sambucol also have a new hot drink for those who like the look and feel of conventional medicines. Raw, inflamed throats need the instant antiseptic action of sage, which is one of the therapeutic agents in A.Vogel’s Echinaforce Throat Spray. The unique formulation of A.Vogel’s Echinaforce means it works in several ways. The root provides anti-inflammatory action, while the fresh, whole plant kicks in with the anti-viral activity. A.Vogel Echinaforce also strengthens your immune system. With such strong research behind Echinaforce versus other Echinaceas, it makes sense to choose Echinaforce. Take your pick from tablets, tincture, Forte tablets (extra strong), chewable tablets, lozenges and throat spray.
Chest & Lungs Asthma sufferers or those with breathing difficulties due to a cold or flu may benefit from using Higher Nature’s Salt Pipe. Safe to use alongside all medication, this device is used for 20 minutes a day by adults and children alike.
