YOUR QUESTIONS OUR ANSWERS Q

I get symptoms of acid reflux, heartburn and indigestion, what natural products could I take that might help?

Your acid-alkaline balance is important to your overall health. Too much processed foods, dairy, caffeine and sugars along with not consuming enough vegetables may contribute to an unhealthy acid-base balance within the body. These imbalances may affect stomach and gut health, digestion, skin health and immunity. Some of the specific nutrients which may help support a healthy acid-base balance are CALCIUM, MAGNESIUM AND POTASSIUM, helpful herbs include CHAMOMILE, HORSETAIL and FENNEL. Also, check out SALUS GALLEXIER, an excellent digestive aid which helps to support the digestive system. My nails have gotten really weak lately and are starting to spit and peel. My diet is pretty good and I drink a lot of water but no matter what I put on them I can’t seem to improve them.

You may benefit from a good multivitamin such as SOLO MULTIFIFTY or VIRIDIAN MULTIVITAMIN as you may be deficient in some vitamins or minerals. There are some excellent formulas available specifically for nail health. Some of these include: OPTIMA SILICA PLUS TABLETS and POWER NAILS.

Dealing with PREMENSTRUAL SYNDROME (PMS) What is PMS? It is simply the way your hormones change during your monthly cycle, a combination of symptoms that will usually appear a week or so before your period and linger until the first few days of your period. Type and severity of symptoms do of course vary for every woman but there is no doubt that the impact it has on a women’s day to day life is not pleasant. Each woman with PMS will have her own personal pattern of symptoms some of which may include: cramps, bloating, mood swings, breast tenderness, emotional issues, headaches and skin problems. The most effective way to identify if you are suffering from PMS is to keep a diary of any changes you notice coming up to your period, do this for 3 to 4 months, note how severe they are and how long they last as your doctor may need to rule out any other condition before confirming you have PMS. It is worth noting that approx 85% of women will admit to having suffered from PMS at some stage so you are by no means alone! A lot of women will also admit that they tolerate these symptoms every month as they are not aware of the

horanshealth.deirdre@gmail.com

natural remedies which may help with symptoms and allow them to go about their day effectively during this difficult time.

SOME OF THESE INCLUDE:

AGNUS CASTUS: effective in dealing with breast tenderness, cramping, headaches and heavy painful periods. KRILL OIL FOR WOMEN: Take 2 capsules a day to help ease irritability, bloating, tiredness also beneficial for the skin. EVENING PRIMROSE OIL, MAGNESIUM, B-VITAMINS: especially B6 are other products to consider. There are also some excellent homeopathic remedies which can be very effective, worth asking about! As always food plays a major role in our hormone and overall health so be smart about your food choices when dealing with PMS, reduce your sugar, salt and caffeine intake as these can lead to bloating, mood swings and anxiousness. Look instead to STEVIA or XYLITOL in place of sugar and try some of the delicious herbal teas available, (this really will make a difference). Eat regularly leading up to your period to stabilise blood sugar levels. Include plenty of high fibre and protein rich food such as wholegrain cereals, seeds, nuts, root vegetables and fruits, to keep your digestive system moving and your energy levels steady. Drink plenty of water, rather than causing you to retain more fluid, additional water will stimulate your body to flush away toxins and remove excess fluid in the process. Until Next Time, Stay Healthy, Deirdre

THE POWER OF OMEGA-3! As the days get longer and the evenings get brighter, people often ramp up their exercise routine. No matter what exercise you choose to do and no matter what level of fitness you have, omega-3 fatty acids can be an important part of your “healthy” plan for getting ahead! Fats are often blamed for chronic health problems such as heart disease and arthritis but in reality you cannot blanket all fats as being bad. “Good fats” are the monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, which you can find in foods such as nuts, seeds, avocados, oily fish, olive oil and coconut oil. These foods should be eaten regularly as they offer beneficial fats as well as numerous vitamins and minerals. Sufficient good fats may improve satiety and appetite so that you’re less likely to snack.

in my joints as a result of years and years of hard training and racing have disappeared. Sometimes I have to pinch myself on the run as I am amazed at how much more spring I have in my running and it is so much more enjoyable to get out for a pain free run each day. I have also noticed that my skin has a healthy glow and smoothness, which I attribute to taking my oils daily. I can’t recommend Eskimo oils enough, they are perfect for the whole family.”

Olive Curran DipNT Marketing Director

I find it fantastic for my memory. I used to forget where I left things all the time but now my memory is excellent. I’m 82 years of age and have no aches or pains whatsoever and I feel great and love life!

The really important fatty acids are the “Essential fatty acids” termed “essential” as the body cannot make them and therefore they must be obtained through the diet. The best source of omega-3 is oily fish (sardines, salmon, anchovies, fresh tuna and mackerel). Oily fish provides the most beneficial and active fatty acids, commonly referred to as EPA and DHA. Surprisingly, a massive 89% of Irish people are not consuming sufficient oily fish in their diet, so often there is a need to take a good quality omega-3 fish oil.

Omega-3 fatty acids are the building blocks of every living cell in the human body. They are absolutely necessary for normal health and development. Without them, cells can’t function, renew, or maintain themselves properly. Omega 3s supports brain, eye, and heart health throughout life. Omega-3s also play an important role in reducing inflammation throughout the body -- in the blood vessels, the joints, and elsewhere. By reducing inflammation, you can shorten your recovery time by reducing soreness and stiffness after a workout. Ireland’s most successful and loved female athlete, Sonia O’ Sullivan is a big advocate for healthy eating and regularly exercising, and she loves Eskimo-3! “Eskimo Oil is an essential part of my daily diet. I always keep the bottle handy so I don’t forget as ever since I have been using Eskimo oil daily, I have noticed that all my aches and pains 4

As you get older, the risks of serious conditions like heart disease and cognitive decline grow. We all want to keep well as we age, so you will be happy to hear that omega-3 can offer protective qualities against Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive deterioration, and reduce your risk of heart and cardiovascular disease. Mary Conway from Castlebar can’t believe the difference taking Eskimo-3 daily has made to her life. “I find it fantastic for my memory. I used to forget where I left things all the time but now my memory is excellent. I’m 82 years of age and have no aches or pains whatsoever and I feel great and love life!” On the market for more than 20 years and with over 120 scientific studies, the Eskimo range represents probably the finest quality fish oil on the market, providing Omega-3 rich oil of legendary purity, freshness and stability. The oil is always from sustainable sources, and there is full traceability and quality control throughout the production process, from fishing boat to finished oil. Drop into your local Horan’s Health Food Store for more information. www.eskimo3.ie

SPRING – A TIME FOR CLEANSING This month we are looking at New Me by New Horizon which is for Whole body Cleansing. Remember never rush a cleansing programme as you can burden your body and make symptoms worse, always follow the instructions. New Me works on the body’s Five excretory systems. 1. SKIN: The Skin is the body’s largest organ DEE MOLYNEAUX and helps eliminate toxins through sweat. 2. KIDNEYS: They filter waste from the blood and eliminate it from the body. 3. Intestines: Removes a wide variety of toxins from the body. 4. LIVER: Such an important organ, it is responsible for processing toxins such as heavy metals transporting them to the digestive tract. 5. LUNGS: Eliminate carbon dioxide and other toxins from the body and help maintain the body’s pH balance. I always like to do a whole body detox in Spring. It makes me ready for the Summer, and it starts me on a healthy eating plan. It helps you to refocus and enjoy your food and look more carefully at what you eat. So while you are doing your detox, it is very important to eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Drink lots of water, you should aim for between 1.5 litres and 2 litres per day. Drink herbal teas, such as Ginger (this is my favourite as it is great for digestion), Clipper Fennel and Sonnentor Lemon Balm. It is important to stay clear of Alcohol, Sugar and Caffeine while doing a Detox.

Salba Health

Don’t smoke and do gentle exercise. When you are finished the 12 day detox it is important to keep Alcohol, Sugar and processed food to a minimum. New Me contains the following ingredients: CHLORELLA: Binds toxins such as heavy metals and removes them from the body. BIRCH SAP: Useful kidney tonic. MULLEIN: Removes catarrh and other impurities from the lungs. It can help with cravings while giving up smoking an caffeine. DESMODIUM: Supports liver and gallbladder function. It is a great cleansing herb, while nourishing and protecting the liver. FENNEL: A Digestive aid , a gentle cleanser for the digestive tract and helps prevent blockages of the excretory system. WILD PANSY: A powerful skin remedy, useful for generally draining toxins from the body. After completing my Whole body cleanse, my foggy head, dull headaches, nausea, joint pains and muscle aches have all gone. I feel my skin has also improved greatly. So I recommend you go ahead and try New Horizon – New Me and become a Whole New You, the best part is it only takes 12 days and it very reasonable. (check it out in store or on our website). Top tip: Before you start your whole body cleanse, be prepared by planning your meals to make it easier and most important have Fun. Dee Molyneaux, Horans Healthstore, Listowel.

BABY ARTICLE Horan’s are proud to announce they will be attending the Baby Market Event in Tralee at the newly refurbished and newly owned ROSE HOTEL ON SUNDAY THE 8TH MAY FROM 12-2PM. We will be there with some fantastic offers on Mommy and Baby products and supplements. Our Healthcare Advisors will be there for any queries or information you may require. We will have some prizes to give away on the day so make sure to pop over and have a look to see what we have on offer! New Baby on the way? No problem we have all you need to prepare for the little one’s arrival. It can be daunting with all the products available on the market, here our Health Advisor and new mom Catherine has tried and tested natural products on her now 7 month old son. Newborn’s skin is very delicate and a lot thinner than our own so what you use should be gentle and chemical free where possible. FACE & BODY - On my son’s skin since he was a few days old I bathed him in Burt’s Bees Tear Free Shampoo and Body wash, this has a natural honey scent from it (we also have fragrance free) and is very gentle on the skin, after his bath I apply Burt’s Bees Moisturing Cream which contains Shea Butter again it has a very natural scent, for his face I use

Weleda Calendula Face Cream it offers a protective barrier to the skin when exposed to the elements. I have recently tried Doctor Mahers Body Wash its gentle on baby’s skin and leaves it feeling soft and supple. NAPPY - When it comes to nappy time I only use Water Wipes, they are made up of 99.9% water and 0.1% fruit extract, for nappy cream I use Weleda Calendula Nappy cream it protects the delicate skin in the nappy area, this cream is especially good during “teething nappies”. SUPPLEMENTS - It is important to give your little one a Vitamin D supplement as you will be advised by your midwife, I use Quest BrightStart Vitamin D3 Drops. I also give him Udo’s Choice Infant Blend from time to time to boost his immune system especially with all the bugs are circulating. TEETHING - He is now at the age where he is teething, he has two bottom teeth coming through, I use the Teetha Gel when its wet teething and Teetha Granules if its dry teething so handy to have both, as it can change. The Amber necklace is ideal to reduce excessive drooling and inflammation around the gum, and Sophie the giraffe is a great addiction to chew on! If you have any queries or want to know any more on any of the above products you can check them our on our webpage www.horanshealthstore.com or email myself on info@horanshealthstore.com. For the best results store in an air tight container in the fridge and eat within a week - if they la st that long!

3/4 cup of I HF almonds 1tsp true cacao powder 12 pitted dates 2tsp peanut butter 1-2 tsp syrup ( If using fresh medjool dates, you will probably only need a tiny amount of agave syrup - or none at all) 1. Add the almonds and pulse until as chunky or smooth as required (be careful not to over-blend as the mixture will become too liquid).

ZEROCHOL PROVES EFFECTIVE FOR CHOLESTEROL MANAGEMENT Coronary heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in Ireland. However, 80% of heart disease is preventable, simply by making a few dietary and lifestyle changes. High cholesterol is one of the main risk factors affecting people of all ages, as it causes fatty deposits to build up in the arteries, making it harder for the heart to pump blood around the body. Fortunately, if you have high blood cholesterol, there are steps you can take to lower it and protect your health. Olive Curran DipNT Marketing Director

Plant sterols are naturally occurring substances found in plants. Plant sterols work by blocking the absorption of cholesterol in the small intestine. It has been shown that consuming plant sterols in a dosage five times higher than the average dietary level, contributes to a significant decrease in the blood LDL “bad” cholesterol level. Studies have shown that taking 1.5-2.4g of plant sterols every day can lower cholesterol by 7-10% in as little as three weeks.

The Mediterranean Diet

Zerochol proves very effective in cholesterol reduction

Healthy, tasty and nutritious, the Mediterranean diet has lots of different tastes to offer: high olive oil consumption, high consumption of legumes, high consumption of unrefined cereals, high consumption of fruits and vegetables, moderate consumption of dairy products (mostly as cheese and yogurt), moderate to high consumption of fish, moderate wine consumption (one to two glasses of wine daily) and low consumption of meat and meat products. The Mediterranean diet discourages the consumption of saturated fats and hydrogenated oils (trans fats), both of which contribute to heart disease, while spices and olive oil turn simple dishes into culinary delights. Although the Mediterranean diet is quite rich in calories, the incidence of cardiovascular diseases is rather low.

In March 2015, a new scientific study showed very positive research results, proving that Zerochol is an effective treatment for cholesterol management. Participants in the trial were encouraged by the results, with 83% participants satisfied with Zerochol, 98% showing no side effects and 79% participants requesting to stay on Zerochol after the 12 week period.

Research Results are better than expected:

The 3 months study with 93 participants (41 men, 52 women) showed positive results when taking one Zerochol® tablet, twice daily. (1.6g plant sterols daily): 12.80% reduction in Total Cholesterol, 17.37% reduction in LDL Cholesterol, 8% increase in HDL, 17.31% reduction in Triglycerides. There were no secondary side effects and it has no known interaction with medications. Plant sterols do not interfere with cholesterol lowering medications. Introducing Zerochol’s New Heart Healthy Program While Zerochol is very effective at lowering cholesterol on its own, it has been shown that following a heart healthy diet and lifestyle may further enhance the cholesterol reduction and improve your overall heart health. Our new 6 week program is available online

The Mediterranean diet, inspired by the traditional dietary patterns of southern Italy, Greece, Spain and Crete, has long been considered one of the healthiest diets on the planet - and rightfully so. The people who follow a Mediterranean diet don’t think of their eating habits as a diet plan; it’s simply a way of life that can lead to long, healthy lives with less chance of chronic disease.

Award Winning - Heart Health Product of the Year Zerochol is delighted to be this years Heart Product of the year winner in the IPN inaugural OTC Pharmacy awards which recently took place in Dublin. Today there is an ever-growing body of research showing that the epidemic of diseases associated with the Western diet — cancer, heart disease, depression, and much more — might be curtailed simply by modifying our diet and lifestyle choices.

Let’s talk about the

Menopause Women experience many milestones in their lives – from their first period, pregnancy to the menopause. Whilst menopause marks the end of fertility, it is also time to celebrate the end of PMS and those awful monthly cramps. The menopause is something all women will go through, some more positively than others. We think it is time to talk about the menopause and get women sharing their experiences and supporting each other. Dealing with symptoms such as hot flushes, sweating, mood swings or disturbed sleep can leave women feeling tired, run down, irritable and low. To help maintain balance, wellbeing and confidence during this time of life, it is important to make sure that your menopausal customers have an adequate intake of key nutrients. They can do this by following a varied and balanced diet and by obtaining nutritional support if required.
