YOUR QUESTIONS OUR ANSWERS Q

What can I do to improve my sleep pattern naturally, I don’t want to take medication?

Sleep is essential to our physical health and emotional wellbeing. Sleep loss takes a toll on mood, energy, efficiency, ability to handle stress and can result in poor health. A few tips which may help are: Avoid large meals two hours before bedtime, Keep a regular sleep-wake schedule, even at weekends, keep your bedroom as dark as possible and remove mobile phones, laptops etc, Avoid caffeine close to bedtime. Some products you will find in-store which may help you to get back a healthy sleep pattern are: MELISSA DREAM- take 2 tablets one hour before bedtime, contains MAGNESIUM which help relax muscles and L-THEANINE to help you relax and stop the mind running and racing and LEMON BALM and CHAMOMILE to relax. VOGEL DORMEASAN – 30 drops in a little water half hour before bedtime can be very effective for sleep disturbances. A blend of VALERIAN and HOPS to help relax the mind and aid sleep. The information contained in this column is not a substitute for medical advice and you should always consult with your GP.

Q

By Deirdre

My diet is rather acidic and it is causing problems such as bloating, weight gain and feeling sluggish. Would you have any suggestions on changes I could make to help this?

Basically you need to try a more alkaline diet for a period of time. The idea is to cut down on foods that lead to acid forming in the body and tipping the body’s PH towards acid levels. These include processed foods, caffeine, alcohol, sugar, dairy, meat and wheat. Too much of these foods can lead to a body that is too acidic. The benefits of the alkaline approach are endless....improved digestion, less bloating, weight loss, clear skin and better energy. Ensure you are eating plenty of green vegetables such as broccoli. Also Spirulina and Wheatgrass are great, especially when mixed in with juice or a smoothie (also available in capsules) ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS are important so make sure you are taking your fish oils daily. BRAGGS APPLE CIDER VINEGAR is alkaline forming to the body and is one of the best things to add to your diet, simply add a spoonful to glass of water daily.

If you have a health question, please feel free to email me on horanshealth.deirdre@gmail.com

MORE ENERGY LESS FATIGUE Remarkably about 1 in 4 people report that fatigue is a significant problem, but just because it is so common does not mean that you need to accept it. Fatigue can affect both your mind and body with symptoms including muscle fatigue, lack of motivation, low mood, brain fog, aches and pains and headaches. This often leads people to turn to unhealthy food, stimulants or alcohol to cope.

WHAT’S THE ISSUE?

There may be many reasons why you are constantly tired. These include poor sleep, lack of exercise, excess weight, unhealthy eating, and chronic stress. In your body, poor cellular energy production may be an important part of the picture. It is important to seek your GP’s advice if you are concerned about your symptoms. Dietary and lifestyle changes can make a big difference to your energy levels, a good balanced diet is essential and a number of nutritional supplements can support you on your journey back to abundant energy. Research has shown that when your cells are low on energy and you feel run down, taking nutrients such as MAGNESIUM or DR WOLZ once or twice a day can restore cellular energy production and improve your energy levels. They may also improve your sleep patterns, mood, mental clarity and energy while reducing muscle pain and overall well-being. CO-ENZYME Q10: has gained much popularity as a dietary supplement for fatigue. It is safe, natural and certainly worth trying, especially if you have severe fatigue.

Despite the common belief that “most people can get all the vitamins and minerals they need by eating a balanced, varied diet”, the reality is that suboptimal intakes of vitamins and minerals are very common, even in people who eat well. While healthy eating is of course very important, optimizing your nutritional intake with a good quality VITAMIN B COMPLEX or daily MULTIVITAMIN AND MINERAL formula has been shown to improve your health and wellbeing. B –VITAMINS in particular can help with mood and energy because they are vital for energy production in your body and are important for your brain. I mentioned DR WOLZ product earlier in the article, this is an award winning German nutritional health supplement, with years of clinical proven success, it is a very effective supplement to help fight viral and bacterial infections. It may help with chronic fatigue, anyone experiencing “burn out” and helps to strengthen your overall immune system. It contains everything the body needs and works at a cellular level enabling vital nutrients to be absorbed directly into your cells.

LIFESTYLE CHANGES FOR ENERGY AND VITALITY:

1. Rest and Restore – Many people have jet lag every day, not because they got off a plane, but because they’re not getting enough sleep. Most people need 7 to 8 hours per night. You can improve your sleep pattern by setting and sticking to a regular bed time. Making time to chill out and relax and hour or two before bed. Completely black out your room, and remove electronic devices to enjoy a longer slumber. 2. Detox from Sugar – Contrary to what we hear, sugar does not give you energy, it robs you of it. It’s not just sweets; added sugars are everywhere, so keep your diet as natural as possible. 3. Regular Physical Exercise – Jump off the sofa and put on your walking shoes. Aim for at least a 30minute brisk walk most days. Until Next Time, Stay Healthy, Deirdre

ORGANIC WHEATGRASS POW DER The young grass of the wheat plant, wheatgrass has been cultivated since ancient times. It is widely acknowledged as being an excellent source of a broad range of nutrients that help to maintain a healthy body and mind. It is high in fibre and high in chlorophyll, which gives it an important alkalising effect.

Benefits: • Low in calories, high in powerful natural nutrients. • An optimum source of chlorophyll. • Also rich in plant fibre, fatty acids, antioxidants, minerals, vitamins and plant proteins.

MAINTAINING MENTAL WELLNESS DURING THE WINTER MONTHS Winter brings short days and chilly temperatures, and you might find your mood changing to mirror these bleak days. Of course, many of us feel a little more sluggish during winter but for some people, the winter blues develop into Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D), a form of depression that begins in Autumn Olive Curran DipNT Marketing Director and usually fades by early Spring. Common symptoms of S.A.D include extreme tiredness, cravings for carbohydrates, especially sweets, irritability, weight gain and a desire to avoid social situations. Beating the winter blues can be accomplished, all you need is the right diet and attitude.

Tips for Beating the Winter Blues Exercise: Exercise isn’t only for maintaining your weight and staying healthy. It’s great for relieving the stresses of life. Exercise will increase your energy and also helps your mind by releasing those “feel good chemicals” that improve your mood. Eat a Healthy Diet: What and when you eat has a great affect on your mood and energy. Avoid refined and processed foods (like white breads, rice, and sugar). These foods are not only devoid of the nutrients your body craves, but they zap your energy levels and can affect your mood—contributing to SAD, lack of concentration, and mood swings. Try to incorporate more complex carbohydrates (whole wheat breads, brown rice, veggies, fruit) and get your daily 8 cups of water. These healthy foods provide your body with nourishment, help stabilize your blood sugar and your energy levels. It’s important to consume foods high in tryptophan which converts to serotonin – the feel good hormone. Good food sources include turkey, banana, eggs, nuts, seeds and spirulina.

Vitamin D: The sunshine vitamin, may be the most important “missing” vitamin for your brain and your mood. Vitamin D is vital for good health, immunity, growth and strong bones. Vitamin D also regulates the conversion of tryptophan into serotonin – your feel good hormone. Vitamin D deficiency is common in Ireland, as sunshine is the number one source of vitamin D, which unfortunately we don’t get a lot of in Ireland. Low levels are thought to be responsible for S.A.D and therefore supplementing with vitamin D during the winter months can help ease symptoms and improve mood. Eskimo Brain 369 contains vitamin D3 along with omega-3 in one formula.

B Complex B Complex vitamins help your body convert proteins from your diet into the neurotransmitters (serotonin, dopamine, etc.) needed for mood and energy. B-complex vitamins also support heart health and improve your response to stress and help boost energy levels. While most B vitamins have some benefits for mental health, in terms of depression, the most important B vitamins include vitamin B6, B9 (folic acid) and B12. Looking to supplement, check out Terranova B Complex. Drop into your local Horans Health Store for more information.

Omega-3 Recent research demonstrates that consumption of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D can play a role in reducing depression. Studies have found that people who consumed fish frequently exhibited fewer depressive qualities than those who didn’t consume fish. Omega-3 EPA and DHA are present in high quantities in fatty fish such as mackeral, sardines, salmon and anchovies. DHA is particularly important in promoting healthy brain function. Just as calcium is essential for building strong bones, DHA is essential for good brain health. Studies show that you need 250mg DHA daily to support brain health. Eating oily fish twice a week – such as salmon or sardines, provides a healthy dose of omega-3 EPA/DHA. Surprisingly, a massive 89% of Irish people are not consuming sufficient oily fish in their diet, so often there is a need to take a good quality omega-3 fish oil such as Eskimo Brain 3.6.9 which combines the unique stable fish oil, Eskimo-3, high in DHA, with plant oils omega-6 and omega-9 along with CoQ10 and vitamin D3. 5

Nowadays, the media is awash with stories about the antioxidant content of wine, and the famed Mediterranean diet features plenty of grapes as well as a regular tipple. Grape Seed Extract brings all that goodness of grapes but in a concentrated form - vastly concentrated, in fact,. gram for gram, it is twenty times more powerful than that other powerful antioxidant Vitamin C and an awe-inspiring fifty times more powerful than Vitamin E. The antioxidants in grape seed extract are believed to protect collagen. Known for its importance in keeping skin elastic, collagen is a major component of muscle, tendons and ligaments and all of the body’s connective tissue. It helps maintain the structure of arteries, veins and capillaries which together form the architecture of the cardiovascular system. Green Energy Bars Ingredients: • 1 cup IIHF cashew nuts • 1 cup IIHF pitted medjool dates (about 8 large dates) • 1-2 tsp true wheatgrass powder • ¼ cup shelled hemp seeds • ¼ cup of true goji berries (optional)

1. Mix the cashews, dates and wheatgrass powder together in a food processor until a rough dough has formed (allowing some cashews to remain coarsely chopped). 2. Add the hemp seeds and pulse several times until combined. Also add the goji berries at this point if you’re using them. 3. Place a sheet of cling film on a cutting board and tip the dough out of the food processor onto it. Use your hands to press and form into a 1-inch-thick rectangle, then cut into 8 pieces. 4. Wrap and keep in the fridge for 5 days or freeze for long-term storage. 11
