IN NEED OF A DIGESTIVE BOOST? We all know looking after ourselves can be hard – we live busy lives. Yet to keep up that frantic pace, we need to get the self-care basics right. We now know that nutritional health, immune function and much more starts in the digestive tract. Thankfully, there’s one simple, daily way to look after the fundamentals. All it takes is two seconds of your time and 42 billion friendly bacteria. But first, what do we know about the digestive tract? Arguably the body’s most important organ system, it plays an essential role in everyday health. Unlike other organs, it functions thanks to a remarkable micro-floral ecosystem. When we eat, bacteria enters the body; this is both normal and important for our health. Research suggests that this ‘good’ bacteria supports a healthy stomach, natural immunity, proper digestion, and protects against unfavourable yeasts. Good Bacteria are essential for good health and vitality at every age. However, poor diet, antibiotics, stressful situations, low

quality food, travel tummy and ageing can all affect our levels of ‘good’ bacteria. And when the ratio of ‘good’ bacteria is lowered, health concerns may arise, including gas, bloating, low energy, constipation, diarrhoea, candida/thrush as well as decreased nutrient absorption - and that’s when we need to replenish the ‘good’ bacteria. One daily capsule of Udo’s Choice® Super 8 Microbiotic may be small, but it contains a staggering 42 billion bacteria in eight distinct strains. That’s because under natural conditions, the gut flora is composed of lots of diverse strains working in synergy to perform the many tasks of a healthy digestive tract. Super 8 includes both lactobacilli, which are found in the small intestine, and bifidobacteria, found in the large intestine, meaning that the entire tract is covered. Compared to microbiotic yoghurts, rebalancing with Udo’s Choice® Super 8 Microbiotics is faster, cheaper and best of all, sugar-free. Due to the quality and quantity of bacteria in Super 8, it’s no wonder Udo’s Choice® are selected as the brand of choice by Irish families for over 20 years. It really is small but mighty. So to look after yourself, start by looking after that incredible ecosystem in your digestive tract. Find Udo’s Choice® Super 8 refrigerated in your local Horans Health Store where it is always live, fresh and active.

As we get older we don’t tend to sleep as much. Babies can sleep up to 18 hours a day and an older person may sleep less than 6.
A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP
Tips to ensure a good night’s sleep • Make sure there is enough fresh air in your bedroom • Exercise can help you relax and sleep, but not too close to bedtime. • Don’t eat or read in bed. Reserve your bed for sleeping and relaxing and your mind will start to associate it with sleep.
We spend a third of our lives asleep. Psychologists aren’t sure why we sleep, but we are genetically programmed so that we do. Most people need about seven to eight hours sleep a night although some feel fine on as little as four to five hours sleep.
• No caffeine or food too close to bedtime as they will fire up your metabolism at a time when you should be winding down.
Sleep restores us both physically and psychologically and as a lot of people will testify, a night of interrupted sleep makes us feel tired, irritable and unable to concentrate the next day. Even as little as two hours sleep deprivation can have a negative effect on our performance the following day. One in three people have problems sleeping – twice as many women as men. It is not clear why more women suffer although it may be due to hormonal influences, amongst other factors.
Some of the natural sleep remedies you will find in-store include: MELISSA DREAM: ideal for those with problems sleeping, helps you to switch off the mind for a deep sleep. NIGHT ESSENCE: May help maintain feelings of mental calm and relaxation at bedtime. MAGNESIUM: involved in over 300 functions within the body. This includes supporting nerve and muscle relaxation leading to a beneficial night’s sleep for you.
There are a number of different stages to sleep and we move through VIRIDIAN CHERRY NIGHT: a nutritional nightcap of ingredients several cycles during the night. The deeper stages of sleep are thought to which when taken at night may help promote a natural sense of be a time for growth and repair, while dreaming is calm and relaxation leading to a good night’s sleep. thought to be psychologically refreshing – helping us Sleep remedy: There are also some excellent Homeopathic sleep remedies to filter the events of the day and sort our thoughts Glass of warm milk available such as SLEEP EASE drops for adults and one for and information. spiced with nutmeg children. ASK ALEXANDER, NATURAL BEAUTY EXPERT Post summer, my hair is really dry. What can I do to remedy this? Come summer, the sun’s rays and salt water add extra stress factor to hair on top of other activities such as blow drying, straightening etc. Prevention is better than cure for our hair and we should protect our hair when outdoors by either covering it with a hat or scarf or alternatively applying a product with SPF. Coconut oil is an excellent natural product with SPF, it only takes a small amount to cover your hair and it also doubles as a styling product. If it’s too late and your hair is already damaged then look for hair care products that will moisturise and nourish the hair and be sure to give your hair an intensive moisturising treatment once or twice a week. See below for ingredients to look for in haircare products and their properties. Can my diet improve the health of my hair? Yes, your diet can greatly affect the health of your hair. If you do not eat enough good quality protein then the diameter of your hair follicles decreases which leaves your hair less full and lacklustre. Beans and legumes are a good source of protein that also offers Iron, Zinc and Biotin. A lack of Biotin in the diet can cause brittle hair. Omega Essential Fatty Acids, particular Omega 3, support scalp health and if your diet is lacking these fats then your scalp and hair may end up dry resulting in dullness. I recommend eating salmon and oily fish to make sure you are getting enough omegas but if you are vegetarian then try adding some hempseed to your diet. Dark leafy vegetables are rich in Vitamins A and C which are needed to product sebum in the scalp, the body’s natural hair conditioner.
When choosing shampoos and conditioners, can you give an idea of the type of ingredients to look out for depending on your hair type? For example, what’s good for dry hair, coloured hair, fine hair that needs volume etc? There are an abundance of ingredients from nature’s garden that can be used to address various hair types, there really is something for everyone. Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice provides an intensive moisturising treatment for dry and damaged hair; Jojoba Oil penetrates deep in to the hair shaft to repair hair and is great to use to strengthen long hair; Apricot Oil removes build up and smoothes the hair follicle to create excellent shine; Lavender repairs whilst also adding volume to fine hair; Sea Kelp is excellent at taming frizz; Pro-Vitamin B5 and B7 (Biotin) have thickening properties and work to repair damaged hair; Vitamin E provides excellent moisture without weighing hair down; Vitamin A and C protect the hair against environmental stessors.
Alexander Baroni is the Managing Director of Kinetic Natural Products, a natural beauty expert with over 15 years in the natural & organic products industry.
JASON Natural Care offer a range of products that are gentle enough for daily use and deliver on the promise of healthy, beautiful hair without the damaging ingredients found in most hair care products. Each formula features specific ingredient combinations, botanical extracts, vitamins and proteins to keep every hair type looking and feeling its best. 3

Some dietary changes may also be beneficial such as cutting down on organ meats and be aware that caffeine and alcohol may trigger an episode of Gout. This is because they can interfere with the bodies ability to excrete uric acid via the kidney’s and bladder. Some of the supplements you should check out are ZINCUFLEX, which may help target the inflammation caused by Gout. Wiley’s Finest Wild Alaskan Fish Oil
“STAR FISH-OILS !” Fish Oils play a starring role in health from head to toe and cradle to grave. Omega-3 fats are crucial to life, termed ‘essential’ because like vitamins, they must be provided in the diet as they cannot be made by the body. Babi Chana BSc (HONS) What you really need to BSc Nut.Med BANT. CHNC know is how to correct nutritional deficiencies of specific omega-3s and address imbalances with excess of omega-6s. Know the Essential Fats of Life- Omega-3s are a family of healthful fats occurring naturally in three main forms• ALA* (alpha-linolenic-acid) is the simplest form of omega-3, found in linseeds (flaxseeds) and small amounts in vegetable oils. • EPA (eicosapentaenoic-acid) and DHA* (docosahexaenoic-acid) are highly complex omega-3s. Fish and seafood are the only source of these most valuable fats. Although ALA is the essential omega-3 that our body cannot make, we can convert it to EPA and DHA, but this process is hampered by the overconsumption or excess of omega-6 fats, wich are abundant in our diets; most oils of commerce (soybean, sunflower, safflower) and most nuts and seeds contain predominantly omega-6 fats.
Your Health is in the Balance! Increasing omega-3 consumption to rebalance excess omega-6 in the diet is fundamental to optimise health. The omega-6 convert to AA (arachidonic-acid) which makes hormonelike messengers, causing thrombosis or blood clotting. Alarmingly, AA also comes directly from meat and dairy, linking this fat directly to increased risk of heart disease, strokes and embolisms. Increasing omega-3 intakes can circumvent the need for the commonly prescribed drugs. Therefore, risks of heart disease, strokes, pain and inflammatory disorders can be reduced by increased intake of EPA.
EPA and DHA are the most beneficial omega-3 fats. Our brain is over 60% fat and DHA is particularly important in the structure of our nervous system and eyes. The retina of the eye contains more DHA than any other tissue. DHA is essential during pregnancy and breastfeeding and supplements may be recommended to optimise neural development in the foetus and learning and behaviour in babies and children. Swordfish, shark and marlin may contain mercury which may be harmful to developing baby’s nervous system; so pregnant and breastfeeding mums and children are advised to limit intakes. However, it is important to note that the benefits of eating oily fish far outweigh the risks from pollutants, so women who are pregnant or breastfeeding can safely eat oily fish.
Sustainability The main source of EPA and DHA is from marine fish-oils, but fish stocks are declining. Wiley’s Finest Fish-oils are sourced from Wild Alaskan Pollock, caught for human consumption and from the world’s most well managed fisheries. The exceptional quality, potency and purity of their products is tested and certified, to provide therapeutic levels of up to 2,150 mg EPA/DHA per single dose.
Wileys Finest Fish-oils are potent, pure, sustainable and affordable. Wiley’s support green initiatives and supply ‘left-over fats’ to manufacture renewable biodiesel fuels. Humans evolved on a diet with a ratio of omega-6:omega-3 essential fats of about 1:1. In Western diets the ratio is about 16:1, but some populations can be 50:1. Western diets are considered ‘deficient in Omega-3s’ and excessive amounts of omega6s in the diet promote the pathogenesis of many common diseases including cardiovascular disease, inflammatory, autoimmune diseases and brain disorders. It is imperative for nutritional professionals to educate and inform the public to understand the importance of increasing intakes specifically of EPA and DHA. Their role is pivotal to prevent and safeguard against common diseases rife in Western populations today. Simultaneous reduction of omega-6s is fundamental, and high doses of EPA and DHA are required to attain evolutionary, healthy ratios. Dose matters. 5

When were young we are care free about our skin. When we reach a certain age we become obsessed with our skin and we want to look younger. Consuming high quantities of alcohol dehydrates the skin. Smoking can damage your skin long term. Use sun protection if you are in the sun for long periods of time. Lack of sleep. While we sleep our skin has time to repair and rejuvenate. GOOD READING
‘Eating in our time has gotten complicated’ - this is a quote from one of my favourite food writers American journalist and author Michael Pollan. It’s true - so much variety, so much new information emerging, so many opinions, some nonsense, not much clarity. One of my favourite and useful of Pollan’s books is titled ‘FOOD RULES - An eaters manual’. It is well worth reading - with the caveat that it is written for American consumers- but then, what was once a USA phenomenon - obesity, is now a worldwide issue. The book is based on some simple food rules, simple yes but very wise rules in my opinion - EAT FOOD, NOT TOO MUCH, MOSTLY PLANTS. Eat real and not commercially processed food, eg, porridge oats rather than boxed cereals (ask yourself “what IS a Rice Crispie/Cornflake?). Drink real water. Watch portion size - be sensible. Eat lots of veg and fruit, and good quality protein. If we all did just these things on a daily basis I think we would be giving ourselves a really good start to improving and maintaining good health. Best wishes. Caroline, Mitchelstown

waters off Antarctica and are the ideal ethical and sustainably sourced form of marine sourced Omega 3 EPA and DHA.
What Are Krill?
Easier To Absorb Than Fish Oil
Krill, also known as Euphausia Superba, are small shrimp like crustaceans, and form the most abundant living organism on the planet. They are fished in the pristine
Omega 3 from Krill Oil is in a ‘phospholipid’ form which is the same as the fat in our cell membranes, and readily absorbed. The lesser ‘triglyceride’ form found in fish oils requires substantial processing before passing through the intestinal walls meaning it is not as easily absorbed by the body as Krill Oil - making Cleanmarine® Krill Oil more ‘bio-available’ to the body. In studies Krill Oil provided significantly better DHA and EPA uptake than Fish Oil. It was shown that the Omega 3 found in Krill Oil was 59% more bio-available than the Omega 3 found in fish oil. This means Krill Oil is a more effective way of obtaining EPA and DHA.
Sustainably Sourced Cleanmarine® Krill Oil comes from the only Krill fishery that has been certified to the Marine Stewardship Council standard and is approved by the WWF (Norway) due to its sustainable and
ethical fishing methods. It is also a member of the CCAMLR (Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living). To protect the species it is vitally important that any fishing be done in a sustainable and ethical manner. Only 0.0375% of the world’s Krill is harvested annually, the precautionary limit of 1% of total biomass is therefore far from being reached.
100% Pure Krill are sourced from the cleanest ocean on the planet – the Antarctic, so unlike many fish oils you will not find any pollutants. Krill are also rich in the very potent anti-oxidant Astaxanthin. As well as its health promoting properties, Astaxanthin naturally protects Krill Oil, keeping it fresh. Cleanmarine® Krill Oil is therefore fresh, free of pollutants, and has no added preservatives.
No Fishy Repeat The rapid absorption of Krill Oil and the high anti-oxidant content means that you do not get the nasty fishy burping and aftertaste often experienced with fish oils. Finally, by choosing Krill Oil, you can say ‘Adieu!’ to fishy burps!
Cleanmarine® Krill Oil is available in your local Horans Health Stores.
