WHY THE HEART LOVES REVIVE ACTIVE The heart is the hardest working organ in the body, estimated to beat more than 2.5 billion times in a lifetime. Through nutrition, we can help keep the heart healthy and functioning properly by making sure it obtains its required essentials for peak performance including oxygen, energy and key nutrients. Daniel Jones BsC PhD Director of R&D Revive Active
Revive Active super supplement is a natural high-quality blend of 26 active ingredients delivering a multitude of health benefits in one convenient daily sachet, including cardiovascular and heart health, supported immune system and sustained natural energy. Revive Active helps to support cardiovascular function by supplying the heart with essential nutrients for energy and performance every day. Revive Active brings together two Nobel Prize winning ingredients for the first time, coenzyme Q10 and L-arginine, to improve cardiovascular energy and vitality.
Coenzyme Q10 is essential nutrient in the production and supply of energy to organs throughout the body, particularly the heart. However, natural levels of CoQ10 within the body have been shown to decline with age and associated with increased fatigue. L-arginine compliments coenzyme Q10, by working to improve circulation and oxygen flow throughout the body, helping to keep blood vessels elastic and relaxed. Furthermore, the inclusion of thiamine (vitamin B1), an essential vitamin for cardiovascular health, supports heart function through the generation of cardiac energy.

Revive Active also includes vitamin C and vitamin E for immune system support, as well as B-complex vitamins and selenium for healthier skin, hair and nails. It is Sugar Free, Gluten Free and suitable for Vegans and Vegetarians. These are just a few of the ingredients and health benefits of the award winning Revive Active.

LET’S PREP FOR HAY FEVER SEASON Hay fever season is fast approaching, but why does the human body suffer from allergies and hayfever?
The human immune system is designed to respond to potential enemies, such as bacteria and viruses, knocking them out with ruthless efficiency. In some people, the immune system becomes a little over-anxious and starts attacking benign substances such as plant pollen. This is the allergic reaction known as hayfever. Other allergies are similar responses to other substances, e.g. scent, animal hair, etc. The more stressed we are, the more junk food we eat, the less sleep we get, the more likely our immune systems are to act in a hysterical manner when faced with something quite non-threatening.
Alison Cullen
Nettles also have antihistamine action. Drink nettle tea and /or take Nettle (Urtica) tincture several times daily. Pollinosan tablets and Nasal Spray are licensed for the relief of the symptoms of hayfever and allergic rhinitis. They are both very easy to use either in place of or alongside conventional medication. Are there any remedies that help sinus issues? Avoid dairy products and cut down on refined sugar, both of which are mucus-forming. Try Sinuforce Nasal Spray, which very swiftly clears the sinuses. For long-standing catarrhal congestion, use Sinuforce Nasal Spray alongside Plantago tincture, which tackles the underlying congestion and strengthens the
mucous membranes in the ear/nose/throat tract. When should people start taking hayfever remedies? It is useful to start working on supporting your immune system by taking Echinacea a month or two before you usually start experiencing symptoms. The last few years have been chaotic in terms of when pollen appears, so this can be difficult. Start taking Pollinosan tablets a couple of weeks before symptoms usually emerge. Use Pollinosan Nasal Spray as and when nasal symptoms begin.
What are the natural alternatives to taking antihistamines for hayfever? Vitamin C is a natural antihistamine. Take a low dose (100mg – 200mg) several times daily to get the most from it. Keep your diet full of fresh fruit and veg too.

with
LUFFA COMPLEX TINCTURE: works swiftly against most symptoms such as sneezing, blocked, itchy or running nose, itchy or runny eyes and coughs. May be taken every 2 hours in acute conditions.
SINUS ATTACK
LUFFA NASAL SPRAY: superb for blocked noses. Rapid effect and no preservatives.
The sinus are a group of air filled spaces within the skull that connect to the nasal passages and throat. There are four different sinuses located throughout the face. Their main function is to help filter the air we breathe. Healthy sinus are made of pink tissue and are empty, except for a thin layer of mucous. If you are prone to sinus infections it is very important to ensure you maintain a good strong immune system as this will help your body fight off infection, we will look at ways to do this later. Some of the symptoms of sinusitis are: Throbbing headache, Painful jaw or teeth, Runny or blocked nose, Cough and or irritated throat, Face painful and tender to touch, Fever. There are plenty of over the counter products to choose from when looking for something to help alleviate these nasty symptoms. But, If you want to choose a natural remedy, here are some of the more popular products you will find instore:
VITAMIN C: your natural antihistamine. Take 2000mg to 3000mg a day while you have the symptoms and then 1000mg to 2000mg a day to help strengthen your immune system. As I mentioned earlier it is important to ensure your immune system is at its best, ensuring it can do its job of protecting you against infection. Some of the natural products that can help ensure this include: BLACK ELDERBERRY: anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties to help strengthen and support your overall immunity. OLIVE LEAF LIQUID OR CAPS: probably one of the most powerful viral, bacterial and pathogen killers on the planet! It is also a strong anti-inflammatory agent (sinus is basically inflammation of the sinus) and is also a very strong immune enhancer. PRO-BIOTICS: according to Chinese medicine, sinus infections are almost always related to gut and intestinal problems. So ensure you top up your good gut bacteria with a high quality probiotic such as, BIO-KULT, OPTIBAC, VIRIDIAN or UDO’S.
MUCOS LIQUESCENCE: a homeopathic liquid which does a very good job breaking up the mucos in the head and chest, giving you relief. Simply take one teaspoon twice a day.
BETA GLUCANS: for immune system support. Especially beneficial for those whose immune systems have been compromised due to chronic fatigue or emotional stress.
GRAPEFRUIT SEED EXTRACT: this is a natural anti-biotic made from grinding dried grapefruit seeds and pulp into a fine powder. It is anti-fungal and will also help to clear out excess mucous.
Good nutrition is essential for a healthy immune system. If you think your diet is lacking in the necessary vitamins and minerals it needs to perform, then ensure you supplement with a good quality multi-vitamin, such as, VIRIDIAN, SOLO or NATURES PLUS.
NETI-POT: if you are prone to sinus infections and you don’t have a NETI-POT, you will want to get one. This handy little device makes it easy to irrigate your nasal cavaity. It helps clear out unwanted mucos and any inhaled contaminants that may be caught in there. Use your NETI-POT twice a day for optimum relief once you feel an improvement (add in 2 teaspoons of COLLIDAL SILVER which is a natural anti-biotic into the water).
VITAMIN D: your immune system needs vitamin D to help it function at its best, so top up with a capsule, spray or drops. Until Next Time, Stay Healthy Deirdre

Many studies have found that Beta-carotene helps prevent the formation of UV induced erythema or skin irritation and redness. There is some evidence that beta-carotene can protect the skin against sunburn by increasing the basal defence against skin damage caused by UV light. I recommend Viridian Beta-Carotene, Pharmanord Tan Care and Quest Beta Cartene. Research has shown that Pycnogenol – a patented formula of Pine bark extract has been proven to offer protection from harmful UVB rays and may reduce hyper-pigmentation and improve skin barrier function. This power house of a supplement is not only a great source of vitamin C but contains powerful antioxidant compounds more potent then vitamin C and vitamin E. If your skin is exposed to the sun, this can be an ideal skin support. I highly recommend Viridan Organic Pine Bark and Berry supplement. Finally, if by chance you got too much sun; Aloe Vera gel will always come to your rescue. Aloe Vera helps with sunburn through its powerful healing activity and can reduce skin inflammation, blistering and itchiness, while helping to heal the skin more rapidly. It acts as a protective layer on the skin and helps to replenish its moisture. The one I use is Aloe Pura Organic Aloe Vera Gel found in all Horans Healthstores. 3
GOLD STANDARD DIGESTIVE SUPPORT FROM UDO’S CHOICE® Udo’s Choice® continues to offer top quality products designed with health in mind. We are delighted to introduce the newest addition to the Udo’s range formulated for optimum digestive health, Digestive Enzymes Gold. A blend of nine plant based enzymes, this new formula has three protein digesting enzymes including Alpha-galactosidase which is beneficial in reducing gas. This makes Digestive Enzymes Gold particularly beneficial for those with chronic digestive symptoms, lactose intolerance, older patients, inflammatory conditions and plant/fibre based diets (vegans). Udo’s Choice® Digestive Enzymes Gold also aids the digestion of proteins, fats, carbohydrates and fibre; may help reduce bloating as well as that uncomfortable feeling of lactose intolerance. It helps nutrients reach every cell in the body to help you feel strong and energised. Sarah Brereton
We recommend you look out for a couple of key things when selecting a good quality Digestive Enzyme: 1. Is it multi-strain? Multi-strains will be more potent and break more bonds in different food groups and last longer in the system. 2. Is it measured by Food Chemical Codex? Milligrams are meaningless. Digestive Enzyme quality depends on activity and not weight. 3. Are they plant based? Plant based enzymes are better for two reasons - They work on a broader pH therefore they digest food and remain active throughout the digestive system and secondly they do not interfere with natural function of body and cause no side effects. Udo’s Choice® Digestive Enzymes Gold is an excellent choice for maintaining optimum digestion and absorption as we get older. After all we are what we absorb and not just what we eat! Udo’s Choice® Digestive Enzymes is available from your local Horans Health Store.
STRESS – HOW TO REDUCE IT USING YOUR DIET Millions of years ago, your body was designed to react quickly to danger. Like wild animals you were on constant alert so you could run or fight if threatened. When your brain thinks your life is in danger it stimulates the release of adrenaline and cortisol
Try to keep your blood sugar levels and energy levels stable by eating something every three hours. Eat breakfast, lunch and dinner plus a snack mid-morning and one mid-afternoon, with no longer than three hours between.
This fight or flight response is incredibly clever and thoroughly efficient. It provides instant energy for 5-10 minutes allowing you to react swiftly to dangerous situations.
This will stop those roller-coaster highs and cravings for sweet foods. Because your blood sugar isn’t allowed to drop, your body will no longer have to ask you for a quick fix. As your blood sugar steadies, so will your mood swings. As your adrenaline levels reduce you will automatically start to feel happier and calmer inside.
These days, many of us live under chronic stress. But our bodies can’t distinguish between late trains, missed appointments, spiralling debt, infuriating work colleagues, family disputes and the truly lifethreatening stress it gears up to challenge. So it reacts exactly the same as it’s always done.
Also certain nutrients can also help reduce stress levels. These include the B vitamins especially B5 for stress relief and energy, magnesium - nature’s tranquiliser for relaxation and sleep, chromium for blood sugar balance, Siberian ginseng which acts as a tonic to the adrenal glands and L-theanine for reducing stress and anxiety.
Marilyn Glenville
Stress can give you a number of symptoms including moods swings, anxiety, irritability, nervousness, aggressive outbursts, fatigue, palpitations, forgetfulness, anxiety, confusion, inability to concentrate, crying spells, insomnia, headaches, muscle cramps, digestive problems and food cravings. You may not be able to control the stress but you can control how it affects you physically and also you can make sure you are not making it worse. There is a chance that your pattern of eating is subconsciously telling your body that it is under even more stress. If your blood sugar levels fluctuate (as they do even more so for women), your body will be releasing adrenaline which is the same hormone it releases when you are under stress. 4
YOUR QUESTIONS OUR ANSWERS Q
Q I’m prone to cold sores, is there a natural cure for them?
Cold sores are caused by the herpes virus, which feeds off the amino acid L-Arginine. If you supplement L-Lysine, an amino acid that looks like L-Arginine you fool the virus and effectively starve it. Take 1000mg of L-Lysine daily (away from food) to keep the virus at bay. When you have an active infection avoid foods rich in L-Arginine, which include beans, lentils, nuts and chocolates. The more stressed you are, the weaker your immune system becomes and this allows the virus to become active – which is why many people succumb to cold sores when they are run down. A powerful immune boosting combination is 3000mg of Vitamin C daily taken with your L-lysine will help strenghten your immune system. MACANTA L-LYSINE would be my recommendation.

I have problems digesting some foods and get very bloated after my meals. I have tried peppermint tablets and they are definitely helping but I was wondering if there is anything else I could try?
The peppermint oil will help with the bloating and discomfort but you may also benefit from introducing a DIGESTIVE ENZYME capsule with your meals. Try using them with foods you know cause a problem. Common problem foods are dairy foods, wheat products, onions, starchy or fatty foods. Digestive enzymes are best taken with food and you may need from one to three capsules, everyone is different, adjust your intake as required. Ensure you are emptying your bowels daily and if not increase your fibre and water intake. Take a good quality pro-biotic such as BIO-KULT, UDO’S SUPER 8 or TUMBIOTIX for a couple of weeks. The bowel is the end part of your digestive system and it is essential to keep it topped up with healthy bacteria for overall good health. The information contained in this column is not a substitute for medical advice and you should always consult with your GP.
GOOD HEALTHY FOOD – QUALITY NOT QUANTITY! by Oliver McCabe Eating good healthy food (fruit and vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds, local fish and meats, dairy, eggs and organic food) is a necessity not a luxury. However, people often say that eating healthy is too expensive. Well, that doesn’t have to be the case. 1. Shop at your local independent health food Oliver McCabe store. Get to know your local independent health food store and always enquire about their special deals and bargains of the week. Also buy long life foods, like grains or seeds, in bulk from independent health food stores - if you have the space to store them. Discounts may also be available when you buy in bulk. Most independent health food stores and grocers have loyalty cards, which can also be useful. 2. Eat seasonally. Seasonal foods are far cheaper, more plentiful, grown locally, and don’t have to travel far to get to you, which all equates to fresher, healthier and tastier produce as well as better value. Ask your local independent health food store or greengrocer what’s in season. They’ll be happy to tell you. If you live near a farm or your neighbour has a vegetable plot or allotment always ask if they have any surplus fruit and vegetables. You’ll be surprised. 3. Start small. Do not completely overhaul your normal diet in one day. It’s easy to get over-motivated and attempt too much, which can backfire. Focus on taking a series of small steps, each of which is attainable, rather than attempting to change everything at once.
If you are new to health food, make a gradual transition, don’t stress out about it, and start by replacing five items a week with healthier options. Keep it simple. Oats or eggs for breakfast, fruit to snack on, homemade soup or salad for lunch, stir-fries or stews for dinner with lots of vegetables, meat or fish and herbs to spice up your life! 4. Eat better. Rid your cupboard (and life) of processed and refined foods and fill your fridge with energy giving foods that will nourish you. Buying fresh can ultimately be cheaper than buying processed convenience foods. Try making your own foods from raw ingredients. Be positive. The belief that you can make a change is a powerful force. You’re much more likely to reach a goal if you have confidence in yourself. Have faith in your ability to change. 5. Write it down. Writing helps you to solidify your commitment and focus on your end result. Write down what you want to achieve. Create a menu and shopping list and stick to it. Decide what you are going to eat for the week and buy only those items you need. Make your own granola or muesli; make your own energy balls, or green juice. Make sure that nothing goes to waste, freeze what you don’t use and add to smoothies and soups. 6. Eat the whole food. Did you know that the greens and stalks of the cauliflower can be eaten? Dehydrate lemon, orange or lime skin (delicious with cakes and puddings), bake and roast your potatoes with the skins on, juice the whole fruit, refrigerate and freeze bulk homemade soups, stews and bakes. Reduce food waste, save your money and be healthier. 5
STAY WELL
THIS SUMMER! Jenny Bodenham
It’s that time of year again!
Gut Health
Whatever your holiday plans,
20-60% of travellers around the world are estimated to be affected by “travellers’ diarrhoea”. This most unpleasant condition is usually described as passing watery stools three or more times a day, either during or shortly after travelling. Sticking to bottled drinking water and avoiding ice cubes and salads that may have been made with or washed with local tap water is always sound advice.
whether they involve long lazy days in the sun, trekking in farflung destinations or simply enjoying a “staycation”, that well deserved break is a treat you look forward to all year. So how can you ensure that you and your family stay healthy whilst you are away, and come back feeling refreshed, relaxed and full of beans rather than plagued by holiday horrors.
Before travelling to foreign climes, it also makes sense to support your gut defences by boosting your population of friendly intestinal bacteria. The Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium strains are naturally resident in the gut and contribute to a strong healthy and robust digestive system. Lactobacilli are the main residents of the last section of the small intestine, and arguably the most well known is Lactobacillus acidophilus which is also found naturally in the vagina.
BA (Hons), Dip.ION
Studies suggest that L. acidophilus may help control intestinal infections and reduce the onset of diarrhoea. Bifdobacterium longum found in the colon, supports balanced gut flora by inhibiting unfriendly bacteria, pathogens and yeast. Bifidobacterium infantis inhabits the gut of both infants and adults and may be beneficial if suffering from symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome including bloating, gas, diarrhoea, constipation and abdominal discomfort. Bacillus coagulans, a “spore” form of friendly bacteria is ideal when travelling, as it doesn’t require refrigeration and is one of nature’s toughest strains, surviving stomach acid well and helping to crowd out other more harmful bacteria that may be encountered.
Fear of flying?
Sun Sense
If the thought of flying or travelling worries you, the B vitamins and the minerals magnesium and calcium are known to have calming effects on the nervous system. Other nutrients such as theanine, lavender, lemon balm and passionflower can also be beneficial in supporting your nervous system.
Of course, protecting yourself from the damaging effects of the sun is extremely important and it is essential to use a good SPF cream. Additionally, to help protect sensitive and vulnerable skin it may be useful to top up on several antioxidant nutrients. Vitamin C combined with vitamin E is thought to reduce the sunburn reaction whilst beta-carotene was found in a study to help protect the skin against the sun’s rays, offering most protection after supplementation for ten weeks. Boost your intake of this valuable carotenoid, by including lots of yellow, orange and green fruit and vegetables in your diet, and consider supplementing if you are going to be spending a fair amount of time in the sun. Don’t forget astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant pigment from the algae Haematococcus pluvialis. Found naturally in pink seafood such as salmon and shrimps, research suggests that astaxanthin when supplemented before and during sun exposure, may not only help protect the skin against harmful UV light but also minimise the damaging effects of the sun such as wrinkling and sagging.
Beat the bugs Don’t forget to be scrupulous about hygiene with frequent handwashing, and drink a few drops of grapefruit seed extract well diluted in water or juice every day to support your defences against bacteria and parasites. Silver is an effective anti-bacterial and can be sprayed into the air, on surfaces and food utensils to help keep the bugs at bay. The culinary herb, oregano, is not only a tasty addition to a pizza or tomato sauce, but can also be supplemented for its anti-bacterial properties and to support the health of the digestive tract.
...and don’t forget to stay well hydrated, particularly if you are spending time in the sun. This is even more vital if you enjoy an alcoholic tipple or two, as alcohol is very dehydrating. So with a little care you can stay happy and healthy on holiday this summer!
If you suffer from prickly heat, limit your exposure to the sun, keep cool, cover up with a sun hat and light cotton clothes and take frequent cool showers. Apply soothing aloe vera to the affected area and try supplementing natural compounds such as quercitin, which appears to stabilise the histamine reaction, combined with vitamin C and bromelain.

Maire, Clonmel Staff favourite The badger Aromatherapy yoga and meditation balm is a favourite of mine, it helps to calm the mind before practicing yoga or meditation, the combination of sandalwood, frankincense and vertivert are soothing and uplifting, the balm is perfect for travelling.
Sarah, Roches Street Food for thought. Puy Lentils. Great to use instead of dry beans as they don't need soaking and don't take long to cook. An excellent source of protein. Full of fibre which may help lower Cholesterol, improve digestion and stabilise blood sugar levels. High in minerals, especially magnesium, which supports high blood pressure. Puy lentils can be used as a substitute to meat in Shepards pie, Puy lentils instead of meat. Use lots of herbs and spices to flavour. Very tasty.
My product of the month: it is Natures Aid distilled Witch Hazel I found it very refreshing on my skin and my breakouts have greatly reduced. My t zone would have been very oily also, I found since using this product it has balanced out.
Sinead Newcastlewest NEWSFLASH Floradix have just brought out a Vitamin B Complex to add to their wonderful range of liquid supplements and herbal drinks. Catherine, Cashel TIP OF THE MONTH: SEASONAL Symptoms of sinus include thick nasal mucous, blocked nose, pressure pain in the face along with headache, sore throat and cough. An effective home remedy is a turmeric and ginger root tea. Turmeric (available in powder or capsule) contains the natural anti-inflammatory curcumin and is also antioxidant. When combined with root ginger and brewed as a hot tea, this combination can help loosen mucous from clogged nasal passages, alleviating sinus pressure and making you feel better all round. The ginger root also has the added bonus of calming an upset stomach - a frequent side effect of excessive night-time sinus drainage.

Easy Homemade Veggie Sausages. Simply mix 150g of SOSmix with 250ml of cold water & allow to stand for 10 mins. What you add to it will make a big difference so enjoy experimenting with your ingredients. I add some finely chopped spring onions, garlic & herbs to taste. Simply form into sausage shapes & shallow fry for a few mins. Great with Biona Tomato ketchup for breakfast at the weekend. Majella, Nenagh
Burgers. Again use Puy Lentils as your meat and follow your usual Recipe. Suitable for Vegetarians. When your making this, do extra and freeze.
Kate, Clash Sheila’s Top Tips for Tanning! Choose to Fake or Bake! Faking it, is the easiest and our advice is to always fake it!
Faking it: Remember to exfoliate, wax or shave 24 hours prior to getting your spray tan, on the day we advise no moisturising, perfumes or deodorants.
Why not opt for the amazing 100% Organic Bellamianta Tan, we us this in the salon! With this fabulous tan you can choose your shade of colour eg, 2 hrs for a light colour, 3 for a medium colour & 4 for a deeper richer colour, some of our clients leave it on over night for an even deeper colour.
Baking it: If you do choose to sun bathe please always be mindful of your skin. Use a high natural SPF eg Green people Sunscreen or Aloe Pura Sun Lotion, SPF 15, SPF25, or SPF 50. Dead Sea SPF 50 is good too! Please avoid direct sunlight especially between 12pm & 3pm!! The Sun is great but always be careful! :)
Sheila, Natures Beauty Salon, Horan’s The Square
Health News June has arrived and hopefully has plans to bring some summer sun with it. Let's get positive and get prepared as no-one enjoys the lobster look, and even less so the pain and risks for the future. Keeping those risks in mind, I try to keep the synthetic chemicals I apply on my family’s skin to a minimum. Jason's family sunscreen is SPF45 and no nasties included so have it at hand for those warm days. As for after sun, there's only one option for me; Harebell Herb's Chamomile Cream. Heals and soothes very gently, and also handmade in West Kerry and so you can't go wrong!

Supporting you through the
Menopause Menopausal sweats and flushes can occur during of after the menopause with no particular pattern. They do not occur immediately with the onset of other symptoms of menopause and may appear gradually. Hot flushes that accompany the menopause are usually caused by falling levels of the hormone oestrogen. This is a natural part of the menopausal process, but does not always happen smmothly and gradually enough to avoid symptoms such as flushes. Low oestrogen levels make it harder to control histamine, which can dilate blood vessels. A simple and traditional way of helping to deal with menopausal sweats is to use the well-known and much-loved herb, Sage. Menoforce Sage Tablets is a traditional herbal medicinal product used for the relief of menopausal hot flushes and excessive perspiration exclusively based on long-standing use. Made with organically grown, freshly harvested sage with a one-a-day dosage. Always read the leaflet. For nutritional support for all stages of the menopause, why not try Menopause Support? A herbal food supplement with Soy Isoflavones, Magnesium (known to help with tiredness and fatigue), Hibiscus and Vervain. Take 2 tablets daily with food for as long as required.
