Beauty with Tina Who says you have to look your age? With incredible scientific advances in skincare, women in their 40s can look as vibrant as they did in their younger years. On a recent visit to our store in Killarney, I got chatting to Laura our Terranova Nutritional Advisor regarding a very exciting product of Hyaluronic Acid, which we all know by now is nature’s moisturiser, keeping skin plumped and hydrated. What blew me away was Terranova’s particular Hyaluronic Acid is the first on the market in Europe with Full Spectrum Molecular Weight. This full spectrum property will allow their supplement to be taken for both skin health (helping to reduce wrinkles by as much as 20%) and joint health, as well as all other possible applications. Above all else, it is budget friendly too. Quite refreshing as normally a Hyaluronic supplement could set you back quite a bit. It is available in most Horan’s Healthstores. Here is Laura explaining more in depth about it… What’s Hyaluronic acid? Hyaluronic acid is a water-loving molecule that it found naturally in the skin, joints and eyes. It’s your body’s own hydrating molecule. Think of a new born baby’s skin; it is soft, plump and dewy (full of hyaluronic acid!) As we age the level of HA diminishes. So how can we stop the ageing process? We can’t, but we sure can slow it down! Think intense hydration, increasing production of collagen and preventing loss of elasticity of your skin. Are there different types of Hyaluronic acid? How can I know the best for my needs? Did you know that not all hyaluronic acid is the same?? There is food grade and cosmetic grade, low and high molecular weight, from animal source to non-animal source. Unfortunately very few brands advertise these factors. Usually they choose the hyaluronic acid based on cost without taking into consideration its effectiveness and suitability for what the person actually needs. Terranova is the first supplement company to work with Full Spectrum Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Acid. Yes it sounds complicated but… actually it is not! Many products containing HA on the market are a specific molecular

weight. The size of the HA molecule defines where it can be absorbed in the different tissues within our body. For example low molecular weight HA is only suited for skin tissue and higher molecular weight is only suited for connective tissue in joints. It is impossible to define which weight is the most suitable for each individual. So why not take a Hyaluronic acid supplement that has low, medium, high and everything in between! That’s where Terranova Full Spectrum Hyaluronic Acid jumps above and beyond. Based on a collection of molecule sizes, Exception HYAL Star does not focus on a specific molecular weight but rather how this range of compounds work in synergy, just as how it naturally occurs in our skin. What’s the ingredients in Terranova Hyaluronic Acid Complex? Now imagine combining Exception HYAL Star technology with Terranova’s own powerhouse of unadulterated, mostly organic, freeze-dried plant ingredients aka Magnifood!! By choosing specific synergistic botanicals that are naturally rich in vitamins, minerals, phyto-nutrients and enzymes, Terranova provides your body with the ultimate beauty product. These powerful, skinnourishing ingredients include rosehips, nettle leaf, horsetail spring shoots and parsley leaf. Always remember there is a reason for every single ingredient within the Magnifood Complex, exclusively formulated to enhance the activity, absorption, stability and function of our friend hyaluronic acid.

Want to have a great year?

Choose gentle natural detoxification - choose vitality

These are great times to be alive. We have more choice than ever before; we can choose interesting hobbies, travel, rewarding careers and social lives. A multitude of rich experiences awaits – if we only have the vitality to enjoy them. Because there is a down side to modern life too; we work hard, expectations are unrealistically high, and we are pulled in many different directions at once. We don’t always have time to cook from scratch, so we eat processed foods on-the-go and our world is full of pollutants that our systems haven’t evolved to deal with. The result is often an immune system under stress which we may experience as digestive issues, bloating or skin problems. We may feel fatigued and low; we may not enjoy all the wonderful things that our lives have to offer. That’s why it’s important to find to offset all these contemporary is free and goes great with at a premium yet it’s absolutely Eating eight potions of diverse changing, although not also look

onslaught of toxic modern living. That’s exactly what Flor-Essence offers, and it’s based on a tried and trusted ancient formulation from the Ojibwbe Native American tribe. Flor-Essence is a cleansing tea blend, made with eight important herbs which provide valuable nutrients, anti-oxidants and blood purifying agents. Red Clover and Burdock Root are blood purifiers which help the body eliminate waste. Blessed Thistle and Turkish Rhubarb increase the flow of gastric juices to aid digestion and liver function. Slippery Elm soothes the digestive tract. Kelp is an excellent source of iodine to help regulate weight and energy levels. Sheep Sorrel provides Vitamin C, while Watercress is rich in chlorophyll, vitamin A and Vitamin C. They work synergistically – which means that the blend makes the individual ingredients more potent than if they were used alone. Flor-Essence is advised for anyone who has digestive or skin concerns, who feels tired and sluggish, has a compromised immune system, is worried about toxic overload or simply wishes to live life to the fullest. Afterall, living well begins and ends with feeling well – so look after yourself this year and experience the difference it makes!

My NEW YEAR Health Goals I enjoy following a healthy and active lifestyle all year round, so my health goals for 2018 include maintaining a good level of fitness throughout the cold and dark early months of the year, so that I’m feeling fit, strong and healthy once spring arrives. We’re all a little bit more susceptible to colds and flus in the winter months, so I’ll definitely be paying extra attention to my immune system health by taking vitamin D3, good bacteria and eating plenty of fresh, whole foods daily. Here are my top New Year supplement picks:

UDO’S CHOICE SUPER 8 GOLD MICROBIOTICS: With a guaranteed 102 billion ‘friendly’ bacteria per capsule, Udo’s Choice Super 8 Gold microbiotics are designed to support digestive health and encourage the growth of beneficial gut flora. I have been using them for the past few months and I believe that they have really helped to improve my digestion. If you are already a fan of Super 8, think of Super 8 Gold as an upgrade!

IRISH BOTANICA ECHINACEA: Echinacea is a popular traditional herbal medicine for helping to improve cold and flu-like symptoms. I love that this brand is Irish, of a superior quality and ethically sourced. I would begin taking it at the very first indication of a blocked sinus, sore throat or other symptoms of a cold.

ONE NUTRITION POWER GREENS:

Many of us struggle to eat enough dark green leafy vegetables, so this powder is an easy way to boost your daily intake, although it’s not a substitute for a balanced diet. I like to add it to smoothies, and benefits include a boost in energy levels. Rich in iron, it can improve oxygen flow around the body and help reduce feelings of fatigue.

ONE NUTRITION D3-MAX: A high-quality and vegan vitamin D3 supplement, I love how easy this is to take. Just a spritz under your tongue and it’s quickly absorbed into your bloodstream. D3 is particularly important to take throughout the winter months in Ireland when we don’t receive enough sunshine for vitamin D production in the body, and it’s essential for immune support and bone health.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Breda O’Connor

First and foremost, I would just like to wish everyone a happy and healthy year for all of 2018. As most of us know, it is usually around this time that we reflect the most on our general well-being and appearance and make up our minds to begin the new year with the best of intentions for improving our health.

With this test, everything you eat has the chance to enhance both your health and your figure, rather than resulting in more bloating, discomfort and weight frustrations. Comprehensive testing includes up to 180 different foods of a wide variety. Feel free to book an appointment with me, Breda Hayes O’Connor, on 087 277 2955.

Perhaps, in the hopes of maintaining our new year’s resolutions, I suggest that you take it one step at a time, and begin with your health and improving your energy to reach a new standard you would be happy with in 2018. After the hectic run-up to Christmas and the many over-indulgences of the festive food that disturbs your digestive system, it is important to give your body the optimum nutrition for energy and vitality. After all, it can be difficult to lose weight and feel energised when the food you are eating is slowing you down both physically and mentally. Why not consider treating yourself to a food sensitivity and nutrition test – to aid and guide you in eating the food that suits your particular body? There would be no better gift to give yourself.

At true, our food is naturally grown and brought to you with nothing added or taken away. We believe in providing the best food that nature has to offer. We believe that quality food does not need to cost the earth.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and should be wholesome and filling. A good breakfast provides a great start for the entire day, and has a great effect on mood and productivity. It’s vital for mental and physical health, as part of a daily routine and particularly in times of stress.

Why Breakfast Matters by Oliver McCabe TOP TIPS

Mindful eating: Taking some calming breaths before eating will aid good digestion. No refined sugar and less caffeine: Refined sugar and caffeine may make you feel better temporarily, but your body soon “crashes” from the high, leaving you exhausted or irritable. Low serotonin (the happy hormone) levels in the brain can cause cravings for carbohydrates such as cakes, sweets, chocolate and alcohol, as the body uses insulin to trigger serotonin release. Don’t skip: Most people simply make up for a skipped meal by eating more at other meals, which is not advisable. Breakfast is the perfect opportunity to ensure that you have your recommended daily intake of vitamins and minerals. Skipping breakfast can mean missing out on essential nutrients plus a greater probability of filling up on nutrient-poor sweet or savoury snacks, while missing out on fruit and vegetables. Skipping meals rarely helps with weight loss. Quick Breakfast: Sip on a homemade green smoothie throughout the morning or have your oat porridge with nuts, seeds, natural yoghurt and fresh fruit, or a boiled egg first and then fruit an hour or so later. A nutritious breakfast is important for everyone, regardless of age, but especially for children and teenagers as it helps them remain focused and fuelled. Breakfast of champions: The ideal breakfast should have plenty of fibre and whole grains, some protein and healthy fat, and as little added sugar as possible—in other words, a good balance of healthy carbohydrates, protein and essential fats. Keep your breakfast choices simple so you don’t need to worry or stress about it. Egg It: Eggs contain important brain fats called phospholipids. Phospholipids enhance your mood, mind and mental performance. There’s no evidence that eating eggs promotes high blood-cholesterol levels or increases the risk of heart disease. Eggs can help to build muscles and they are rich in protein, cholesterol and vitamins A, D and E. Yolks are rich in vitamin D so eat the whole egg to get the whole nutritional package. Oat Up: Oats are economical, versatile and nutritious. Prepare hot porridge with natural yoghurt and fresh berries or soak oats overnight in apple juice and natural yoghurt to create a bircher muesli topped with flaxseed and banana. Alternatively, bake oats in the oven the day before with nuts and seeds and maple syrup to make a scrumptious granola with chia seeds. Oats stabilise blood sugar levels and prevent sugar crashes, as they are full of slow-releasing carbohydrates that give you plenty of energy until lunchtime. They contain a lot of soluble fibre that is rich in beta-glucans. This particular type of fibre has been shown to lower bad cholesterol levels and help prevent high blood pressure. Try getting up fifteen minutes earlier to enhance your enjoyment of the early morning experience of the best meal of the day—you’ll be glad you did. Soon it will become a stress-free daily ritual with wonderful benefits.

YOUR

QUESTIONS

Q

by Deirdre

OUR

ANSWERS

I am trying to quit smoking and I am doing pretty well but can find it difficult at times. Are there any supplements which might help?

Cigarettes are of course designed to be addictive. Nicotine is one of the chemicals which act as a powerful stimulant and can affect your blood sugar levels. Every time your blood sugar levels fall you may be prone to a craving. Supplement with 200mcg of CHROMINIUM each day, along with 50mg of NIACIN (vitamin B3) and 2g of VITAMIN C daily while you are quitting and for a month afterwards. These may help you to detoxify and eliminate toxins from the cells.

Q

Can you recommend any good natural Iron supplement, as I find the few I have tried have made me constipated.

Some of the symptoms of low Iron include feelings of fatigue, low mood and mental sluggishness. However, it is important to remember that these symptoms don’t always indicate low iron levels and should always be discussed with your GP. It is also important to be aware of your iron levels before supplementing as excess iron may cause other health problems. Natural Iron supplements such as FLORADIX which includes supportive herbs work well for most people without causing constipation. SPATONE is another effective Iron supplement. VITAMIN C helps with the absorption of Iron so it is a good idea to take 500mg along with your Iron supplement. If you have a health question, please feel free to email me on horanshealth.deirdre@gmail.com The information contained in this column is not a substitute for medical advice and you should always consult with your GP. 5

GET HEART HEALTHY THIS NEW YEAR…

IT’S YOUR YEAR TO SHINE!

Every New Year, we make plans to get our health back on track, be it by losing weight, sleeping more, giving up fries or starting yoga. While these resolutions are wonderful, one of the best ways to improve your health and wellbeing is to start taking omega-3 and vitamin D3 daily. Omega-3 and vitamin D are probably the most talked about nutrients in nutrition and for good reason. Both omega-3 and vitamin D offer a wide array of benefits to the body and deficiency is Olive Curran DipNT widespread. With this in mind, Eskimo-3 Advanced Marketing Director EPA is a high-quality food supplement combining omega-3 fish oil with natural vitamin D3, two of the most beneficial nutrients in one capsule.

OMEGA-3 - ESSENTIAL TO GOOD HEALTH

The most beneficial Omega-3 fats EPA and DHA are primarily found in fresh, oily fish such as mackerel, salmon, anchovies and sardines. Your body can’t naturally produce Omega-3, so you must get these fatty acids from your diet. Surprisingly, a massive 89% of Irish people are not consuming sufficient oily fish in their diet, so often there is a need to take a good quality omega-3 fish oil. Omega 3s supports brain, eye, and heart health throughout life. There is more scientific evidence behind the cardiovascular benefits of fish oil than any other nutritional supplement. Thousands of clinical studies have shown that increased intake of EPA and DHA—the omega-3 essential fatty acids in fish oil—enhance overall cardiovascular function. Omega-3s have been found to improve numerous heart disease risk factors. They help to reduce blood pressure, reduce triglycerides and improve blood circulation. Omega-3 has also been shown to increase HDL “good” cholesterol.

VITAMIN D - THE SUNSHINE VITAMIN

Vitamin D is fast becoming a ‘super-nutrient’. No longer just an important nutrient for healthy bones, research is now finding that deficiency of this fatsoluble vitamin can be linked to a wide range of health problems. Vitamin D is essential for normal bones and teeth as well as the immune and muscle functions. It is also needed for normal absorption and utilization of both calcium and phosphorus. The human body is able to produce vitamin D3, but only after sufficient exposure to the UVB rays in sunlight, therefore deficiency is often an issue for people during the winter months. Some studies have shown an association between low levels of vitamin D and certain cancers, diabetes, autoimmune diseases and cardiovascular disease. Taking a daily fish oil supplement, naturally rich in omega-3 with added vitamin D3 can support your heart, brain, joints, immune system, bones and skin and is a simple way to safeguard your health.

ESKIMO-3: IT'S WHAT'S ON THE INSIDE THAT COUNTS

On the market for more than two decades and with over 120 scientific studies, the Eskimo range represents probably the finest quality fish oil on the market, providing Omega-3 rich oil of legendary purity, freshness and stability. The oil is always from sustainable sources, and there is full traceability and quality control throughout the production process, from fishing boat to finished oil. This trace-ability (and accountability) has resulted in the Eskimo® range being awarded a 'Friend Of The Sea' certificate. Further information is available at eskimo3.ie.

skin and hair. You need to add them into your diet by eating specific omega rich foods (oily fish, avocados, flaxseeds and walnuts) and supplementing with a quality organic oil such as Udo’s Oil. By so doing, you are laying a solid foundation for good health.

• Understand the underlying reason (the ‘why’) for making the change. Embrace it fully. It will help you keep going when you feel challenged.

• Batch cook, refrigerate and freeze. This makes life easier and is healthier than consuming readymade meals.

• Set yourself a roadmap, a 90-day goal. Break it into manageable chunks as if you are on a journey.

• Eat with intent. Savour your food. Let your taste buds take you on a journey by cutting out unnecessary distractions when eating (TV, phone, radio).

• Be kind to yourself. Each evening journal what you did well that day and what part of the journey you travelled. Congratulate yourself. If you ‘fall off’ the wagon, use these journaled achievements to get yourself up and going again.

NUTRITION • Buy and cook as much ‘real’ (unprocessed) food as possible e.g. fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, eggs, seeds, nuts and spices. • Embrace ‘good’ fats. Omega 3 and 6 fats are essential to your body’s wellbeing, especially your heart, brain and eye function. Many fans also see an improvement to the quality of their 6

EXERCISE First and foremost, find a form of exercise you enjoy. • Decide on your goal. By having one, (however small) you will be more likely to stay focussed and motivated. • Start slowly e.g. a twenty-minute walk per day. When you are into a rhythm and routine, try to build your time and pace up by an extra 1% per day. Always listen to your body. Grab your own bottle of Udo’s Oil from your local Horans Health Store.

Fill a litre bottle of water at the start of your day to help you track your daily water consumption. Aim to have one litre consumed by lunchtime. Refill, and aim to finish the second litre by bedtime. Use for all your teas, coffees, soups - even what you use to make your porridge in the morning! It all counts.

BEAUTY TIP

Coconut Oil can be used to soften and soothe ageing, dry skin or you can apply it as an intensive hair-repair oil (simply comb into hair, leave for approx 30 mins, wash as usual, for a silky, youth ful gloss). Mary, Listowel

STAFF FAVOURITE

For years I abused my hair, I have been pink, purple, blue, black, blonde, every colour, my hair had got to the stage where it had gotten so dry and brittle just breaking away when brushed I decided to stick with one colour and try the Naturtint hair colour in shade 5n, my hair has never felt and looked so good, its strong, less split ends and most of all shiney and healthy. TOP TIP

Add an extra crunch to your salad this month by using sesame sticks instead of croutons – also packed with protein. Deirdre, Manor

DID YOU KNOW?

Marigold heals irritated & sore skin such as eczema, wounds and rashes. Comfrey speeds up the healing process of cuts, scars & slow healing wounds. Chickweed is brilliant for relieving skin irritations like insect stings/bites, reduces inflammation in acne/ spots, blisters, chicken pox etc.

Work smart - check the capacity of your favourite cups and mugs, maybe change over to a 330ml instead of a standard 250ml mug. Fill a travel mug and consume on the journey to work. Give yourself mental reminders - put your water where you can see it. If you find it difficult to drink plain water add something to it eg. A squeeze of lemon, any cordial, a few mint leaves.

Measuring and tracking any aspect of our behaviour increases our awareness of our behaviour which, in turn, increases our chances of implementing successful changes in our lives. All of your body systems, and especially your brain, work most efficiently when they are guaranteed a regular supply of water. So, do yourself a big favour - keep yourself well-watered and you will blossom. Ps. Only drink small amounts with your meals. Caroline, Mitchelstown

After a while you will find yourself keeping a mental tot of what you are drinking, and you will have an increased awareness of your natural thirst levels. Congratulations! You are successfully developing a new healthy habit.

WHY DO WE NEED ANTIOXIDANTS? Antioxidants are vital for our health as they have been shown to support healthy ageing, reducing chronic Olivia Beck disease, improving cognition and mental health. Ultimately they work to maintain and improve general health and wellbeing.

SO WHAT CAN WE DO TO PROTECT OURSELVES?

Antioxidants are abundant in nature, because plants contain antioxidants to protect themselves too. The nutritional content of natural whole foods is just what our body needs to reduce the effects of oxidation. However, we sometimes struggle to obtain sufficient antioxidants in the modern world due to urbanization, overuse of agricultural land, intensive farming, stress-fuelled society and easy access to processed foods. This means that we are often unable to provide our body with the essential nutrition required to defuse this free radical activity.

• Keep a healthy mind by staying hydrated and maintaining good balance between work and home.

Not only do free radicals naturally occur in the body, we can also absorb them from our environment. Examples are through burnt or fried foods, exposure to chemicals such as pesticides and cosmetic and domestic products

ww Billberry – Acts as a natural anti-inflammatory agent[7] supports circulation and strengthens capillaries[8]

• Eat organic and/or local produce as much as you can afford. Look out for the ‘dirty dozen’ and ‘clean fifteen’ as a basis.

ww Grapeseed extract (as Vitaflavan®) - an excellent source of oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs). These antioxidant molecules have approximately 50 times more free radical scavenging ability than vitamins C and E.

• Base your diet on whole foods in forms of fresh fruit and vegetables and good quality protein. • Minimize and ideally eliminate processed foods, usually void of any antioxidant nutrition.

ww Quercetin - One of the most potent antioxidants that is used often by nutritionists to support normal histamine release and support an overactive immune system.

• Look after your gut. A healthy gut is a healthy body! • Include key nutrients in your diet that help support high antioxidant activity, such as: ww Turmeric - containing the active ingredient curcumin. This spice is known, improving cognition and reducing the signs of ageing. ww Vitamin C - improves immune cell function (neutrophils & lymphocytes), [1] reduces tiredness and fatigue, acting as a co factor for iron absorption [2]and supports collagen formation. Our favourite moisturiser from the HAREBELL HERB range for this time of year is CARRAGEEN AND LAVENDER. It can be used as a day and night moisturiser for both face and body. Carrageen is an Irish Seaweed, well-known for its beneficial properties for skin care, including anti-ageing, hydrating, nourishing and healing, while Lavender has a calming effect on the skin. This combination is great as it is hydrating, leaves the skin silky smooth and can be used on all skin types including sensitive skin. It can also be used around the eyes and lips to help with any fine lines and wrinkles.
