The French School System General Information

In­ France,­ education­ is­ compulsory­ from­ the ages­of­6­to­16,­but­a­large­majority­of­children start­school­well­before­the­minimum­age,­often as­young­as­2­years­old­and­over­50%­of­18-21 years­old­in­France­are­still­in­full­time­education,­ or­ else­ following­ a­ vocational­ training course.­Some­64­%­of­all­school­pupils­in­France complete­ their­ secondary­ education,­ and­ take the­High-school­leaving­certificate­examinations, known­as­the­“Baccalauréat”.­

Public and Private Schools in France

It­is­commonly­believed,­outside­France,­that­virtually­all­schools­in­France­are­state­schools,­i.e.­in the­public­sector.­This­is­a­misconception.­Over­80%­of­school­pupils­are­in­state­schools,­but­this leaves­a­substantial­(and­growing)­minority­of­almost­20%­who­attend­private­schools.­However the­private/public­divide­is­not­as­clear­as­it­is­in­other­countries.­ Private­schools­in­France­are­essentially­(about­90%)­catholic­schools,­in­which­there­is­religious instruction­in­the­curriculum;­they­select­their­own­teachers,­but­must­follow­the­same­curriculum as­state­schools­if­they­wish­to­remain­under­contract­(“écoles­sous­contrat”)­to­the­state­education­system.­This­is­a­very­important­point­for­almost­all­private­schools,­as­it­means­that­the­state pays­the­teachers.­Consequently,­private­schools­in­France­charge­reasonably­low­fees,­and­are­accessible­to­pupils­from­most­social­backgrounds.­ The­state­education­system­gives­great­importance­to­the­principle­of­secularism­(“la­laïcité”)­and there­is­no­formal­teaching­of­religion­in­state­schools­in­France.­

The French School System Ecole Maternelle

Kindergarten­or­pre-school.­“Ecoles­maternelles”­are­optional­and­take­pupils­from­age­2­to­6­to­prepare them­for­entry­into­primary­school.­The­French­“école­maternelle”­is­more­than­just­a­playschool;­the­curriculum­includes­Reading­and­writing,­numeracy­and­even­sometimes­a­foreign­language,­as­well­as­artistic and­creative­activities.­Children­are­taught­by­certified­teachers­how­to­behave­with­others­and­are­helped to­develop­their­personality­and­their­physical­abilities.­

Ecole Primaire

Primary­School­or­grade­school­for­pupils­aged­6­to­11.­The­primary­school­curriculum­in­France­is­similar to­that­in­many­other­countries,­and­includes­literacy­and­numeracy,­with­classes­in­French,­arithmetic,­but also­geography­and­history,­the­arts,­and­more­and­more­frequently­a­foreign­language,­usually­English.­

Collège

Middle­school­or­Junior­High­School­for­pupils­aged­11­to­15.­The­“collège”­is­the­backbone­of­the­French school­system.­All­pupils­go­to­Collège,­usually­at­11,­but­sometimes­at­an­older­age,­if­they­have­been­made to­repeat­a­year­in­primary­school.­The­Collège­is­designed­to­provide­all­pupils­with­a­fundamental­secondary­education,­after­which­a­certain­degree­of­specialisation­will­be­introduced.­Its­goal­is­to­go­deeper into­learnings­of­the­Primary­school,­develop­logic,­observation­and­new­technologies­knowledge.­In­practice,­pupils­are­frequently­oriented­during­their­Collège­years­either­towards­general­classes­from­which they­will­be­expected­to­continue­their­education­in­a­traditional­Lycée,­or­towards­more­technical­classes, after­which­they­will­be­expected­to­take­an­exam­called­the­“Brevet­des­Collèges”,­and­then­either­stop their­secondary­education­if­they­have­reached­school­leaving­age,­or­continue­in­a­“Lycée­Professionnel” or­vocational­high­school.­Topics­in­Collège­are­French,­Mathematics,­history,­geography,­technical­education, art/music,­physical­education,­civic­education,­science,­and­foreign­languages.­

Lycée

Senior­High­School­for­pupils­aged­15­to­18.­The­traditional­French­Lycée­covers­the­last­three­years­of secondary­education.­The­main­function­of­the­Lycée­is­to­prepare­pupils­to­sit­the­“Baccalauréat”­exam, which­gives­entrance­to­higher­education­in­Frane.­After­one­year­in­Lycée,­the­students­must­choose­the profile­of­their­studies:­Sciences­(S),­Litterature­(L)­or­Economy­and­Social­Sciences­(ES).­Classes­in­a­traditional­lycée­cover­the­same­range­as­in­college,­with­the­addition­of­philosophy­(for­all)­in­the­final­year.

Pupils­in­a­lycée­technique­may­begin­to­specialise­in­a­faily­narrow­technical­field,­in­addition­to­their­general­secondary­studies.­­

Baccalauréat

The­French­Baccalauréat­is­a­unitary­exam,­that­pupils­pass­or­fail.­It­is­impossible­to­pass­in­one­subject and­fail­in­others.­The­only­mark­that­counts­is­the­final­weighted­average,­which­must­be­at­least­10/20­for a­pupil­to­pass.­Pupils­who­achieve­just­under­10/20­are­often­passed­by­the­exam­board,­whose­decision is­final.­Pupils­achieving­between­8­and­10­can­re-sit­their­baccalaureate­as­an­oral­exam­a­few­weeks­later.

Those­who­get­under­8/20­must­retake­their­year,­and­try­again.

Placements­can­take­place­anywhere­in­France,­depending­on­the­time­of­year,­duration­of­the stay­and­availability.­

As­we­do­our­best­to­reach­the­best possible­match­between­the­student’s personnality­ and­ interests­ and­ the host­family’s,­the­participant­may­not select­a­geographic­area­or­environment.­ It’s­ important­ to­ know­ that host­families­can­live­in­cities,­suburbs, but­also,­for­some­cases,­in­rural­areas.

Horizons­ du­ Monde­ will­ place­ students­at­its­discretion,­according­to availability­of­French­schools­and­host families­ anywhere­ in­ Metropolitan France.­

All­host­families­are­thoroughly­screened­and­interviewed­by­Horizons­du­Monde’s­Local­Coordinator­(including­criminal­background­check).­­All­our­host­families­are­voluntary.­­They­represent the­diversity­of­our­society­;­they­can­be­from­very­diverse­social­backgrounds,­ethnic­origin, composition,­age...­They­all­have­in­common­their­will­to­open­their­home­to­a­foreign­student, take­care­of­him/her­as­if­he/she­was­their­own­kid­and­share­their­every­day­life. ­6

Your School

The designation of the academic level the par ticipan t will attend depends on his/her age and

his/her level of French. It can only be confirmed by the school in which the student is enrolled.The par ticipant is expected to demonstrate serious commitment to the challenge of French academic studies. Attendance to all cla sses is mandator y.

The­issuance­of­diplomas,­participation­to­the­French­Brevet­des­Collèges­or­Baccalauréat,­placement­in­classes­and­grade­level­are­decisions­made­solely­by­the­School­Authorities­and­School District­concerned,­Horizons­du­Monde­is­not­partaking­in­the­decision.

BOARDING­SCHOOL We­cooperate­with­Private­Boarding Schools­that­are­highly­committed­to International­Exchange,­considering­it as­a­major­part­of­their­educational goals.­They­ regularly­ host­ our­ students­participating­in­our­School­Integration­Experience They­have­an­excellent­academic­reputation­and­offer­a­warm­welcome to­our­foreign­students­willing­to­integrate­the­school­routine­and­to­face the­challenge­of­studying­all­subjects in­the­French­language.­The­students benefit­from­a­personal­attention.

Preparator y Language School Option Brush up your level of French and get ready for your AYP or Boarding School experience, with 1 mon th of in tensive French classes in our world-renowned Language school in Rouen.

There­are­groups­at­6­different­levels­from­beginners­to­advanced­students­and­courses­start every­Monday.­On­the­first­day­there­is­an­evaluation­and­needs­analysis­session­in­the­morning and­on­the­first­afternoon­we­offer­a­free­orientation­session­for­new­students,­introducing­them to­the­city­of­Rouen.

Classes­are­based­on­communicative­French­and­structural­progression­in­mornings.­

Class­times­are­9.30am­to­1.00pm,­including­a­30­minute­recess­from­11am­to­11.30am.­While­in the­afternoons­between­2.00pm­to­4.00pm,­the­lessons­are­organised­in­a­series­of­workshops based­around­specific­skills­and­cultural­topics: • Monday:­Vocabulary­and­reading • Tuesday:­Written­comprehension­and­writing­skills • Wednesday:­Listening­skills­and­French­life­and­culture • Thursday:­DELF­DALF­preparation • Friday:­Speaking The­maximum­number­of­students­in­each­group­is­always­10.

The school is in an independent building in the chic and quiet Jardin des Plantes area (Botanical Gardens) which has a wide variety of local shops and services and is only a short walk from the lively shopping area of St Sever. The school is easily reached from all parts of the city.

All trainers are highly qualified and have many years experience teaching students from all over the world.They are here to help all students get the maximum from their stay.

A friendly, knowledgable and supportive administration team is always on hand to help you to settle into the student’s new life in Rouen.

The resource centre has 30 new computers with free internet access.WiFi access is also free.

French in Normandy has a small lending library and audio visual material including CDs and DVDs available for students.

Total Immersion Homestays

The­student­lives­in­a­host­family,­shares­its­daily­life­and­routine,­participates­in­its­regular­activities,­and­is­considered­as­a full­member­of­the­family.No­school­attendance,­no­language­lessons,­no­scheduled­activities­are­included,­besides­the­ones that­will­be­organized­by­the­French­host­family.­

One-to-one Home Tuition

Our­One-to-One­Home­tuition­is­an­ideal­program­for­students­who­wish­to­quickly­improve­their­French.­In­addition­to­a full­immersion­stay,­students­attend­private­tuition­sessions­with­a­highly­qualified­French­teacher­who­will­be­focusing­exclusively­on­the­student’s­language­needs.

Four-to-one Home Tuition

Four-to-One­programs­are­possible­upon­request­for­closed­groups:­each­student­live­individually­in­a­host­family.­The­lessons and­activities­are­organized­in­groups­of­4/5­students­of­similar­language­level.­Excursions­are­organized­with­all­the­different groups­of­4­staying­in­the­same­area.­
