›Architecture‹ Cristobal Gonzalez The year is 2050 and all the premonitions about the future conceived by renamed architects that somehow flirted with radical ideas have become true.¹ The profession itself is about to extinct from the face of the earth, and who gives a damn anyway? By this time only three professions really exist, according to human needs and functions: Doctors (Scientists), Professors (Babysitters) and Chefs (Farmers). The difference about architecture with other useless professions and dead disciplines is that Architects were almost wiped out because they have become some kind of an underground sport, where the main goal is to hunt them and open their heads and expose the brains out (›yes‹ zombiland in downtown Tectonic City).

You may also say that it’s starting to look like the 12 th century when the inquisitors persecuted the magicians, witches and the heretics.

Everybody is into sports now (this is of course the only religion besides pornography which others considered a sport as well).

There are only few Architects left. They are mostly from the last generations of graduated students from schools and ateliers in Germany and Netherlands. They have moved out from Western Europe and refuge in Siberia (since half of America has vanish and the remaining land has progress and transform into a higher nested society). Scholars explain that Architects started to be hunted by their own pieces of work since early on in our times, for example modernism and the international style fail enormously and probe to be wrong followed by another mistake called postmodernism and all of its ›isms‹ branches like the deconstructivism, blobs, parametricism, etc. That is why nowadays they are track down by real moving bodies not white elephants that contaminate the environment, which brings me to another subject in this matter: the ecologist supported by corrupted² politicians (all) needed somebody to blame for trading and supporting‚ ›globalization‹ and all of the mess this brought, and the Starchitect³ were ideal for this job. They helped out to diminish the entire profession right before the global economic collapse.

Tracing down facts, it really started when Architects became obsolete in the late 90s when the internet era really took over and exploded anywhere and everywhere. All knowledge, methods and images were digitalized and accessible to everybody. I still ask myself to these days: who really needed Architects in those times? They had no true knowledge of anything. They were technologically out of shape. They couldn’t control their designs anymore and lost the battle against other more specialized professions. All they could do is wonder and predict atmospheres! But anyone does that at one point or another in their lives, but not all can

tektur? Oder ist viel eher doch alles Architektur, wie Hollein verallgemeinernd behauptet?

Aber in diesem Fall interessiert uns diese unerschöpfliche Diskussion nicht. Wir möchten durch die Beiträge dieser Ausgabe von Horizonte Entscheidungen darstellen, die dazu ermutigen, nicht mehr den ausgetretenen Weg zu gehen, sondern neue Möglichkeiten als praktizierender Architekt zu entdecken. So bestimmt die Flut an Alternativen – die sowohl Fluch als auch Segen sein kann – den Fokus dieser Ausgabe.

Im Zuge der Befreiung des Architekten aus seiner konservativen Rolle spricht sich Leigh Hilton für die Anerkennung von Kunst und Philosophie als wichtige Bausteine der Architektur und der Interpretation von Raum durch das Individuum und durch die Gesellschaft aus. Während hier der Architekt Kompetenzen des Künstlers und des Philosophen übernimmt, warnt Gerard Reinmuth, dass gerade die momentan rasche Zunahme jeglicher Theorien über Architektur die architektonische Praxis überholt und damit aussticht.

Die dadurch erzeugte Irrelevanz der Produktion von Architektur – und auch der kritisch engagierten aka-

Die Erweiterung des menschlichen Bereiches und der Mittel der Bestimmung der Um-›Welt‹ geht weit über eine bauliche Feststellung hinaus. Heute wird gewissermaßen alles Architektur.«

Dieses Phänomen, das Hans Hollein bereits 1967 in seinem Text Alles ist Architektur beschreibt, lässt sich nur zu gut auf die heutige Zeit übertragen. Architekten finden ihren Platz in den verschiedensten Bereichen unserer Um-›Welt‹: Ob in politischen Positionen, im World Wide Web oder in den Bereichen der Printmedien – der Architekt agiert auf Bühnen, die klassischerweise nicht für ihn bestimmt zu sein scheinen.

Wir haben diese Beobachtung unter den Titel More than architecture gestellt. Bereits bei dieser Formulierung stellt sich uns die Frage, gibt es ein MEHR als Archi-

Editorial demischen Arbeit – verlangt einen Architekten, der geführt von einer normativen Ethik aktiv wird und die Materialisierung wieder ins Zentrum der Disziplin rückt.

Die Entscheidung, nicht zu bauen oder sich darüber hinaus mit Aufgaben zu beschäftigen, welche beim ersten Blick wenig mit Architektur zu tun haben, wird sehr persönlich durch Gregory Melitonovs Beitrag zur ›correctness‹ des Architekten und Cristobal Gonzalez’ Dystopie einer Zukunft ohne Architekten verdeutlicht.

Der Blick von Bernhard König auf das Leben Frank Lloyd Wrights, erzählt uns, warum ein einzelner sich zu seinem Schaffen entschloss und dabei eine umfassende Utopie entwarf.

Die Darstellung zeitgenössischer Auffassungen, wie jener von Lacaton & Vassal durch Jeanette Kunsmann oder unserer Interviewpartnerin Nele Stragier des belgischen Architekturbüros L’Escaut, geben Einblick in Arbeitsformen, die ganz bewusst von traditionellen Architekturbüros abweichen.

Neben diesen Überlegungen und Vorstellungen zur Rolle des Architekten kommen wir dann doch nicht ganz ohne eine gewisse Standortbestimmung der Architektur aus: Nikolai Frhr. v. Brandis diskutiert in

While here the architect adopts skills of the artist and the philosopher, Gerard Reinmuth warns that it is exactly the current rapid increase of theories of architecture that surpasses the practice of architecture and thereby trumps the latter. Thus, the generated irrelevance of the production of architecture – and the critically engaged academic work as well – requires an architect that is led by active normative ethics, rearranging the process of materialisation back into the centre of the discipline.

The decision not to build or to engage beyond tasks that have little to do with architecture at first glance is illustrated by Gregory Melitonovs in his very personal contribution about the architect’s ›correctness‹ and Cristobal Gonzalez’ future dystopia without architects.

Bernard König’s account of the life of Frank Lloyd Wright speaks of an individual that positively decided in favour of his making while creating an extensive utopia. The presentation of contemporary conceptions, such as those of Lacaton & Vassal by Jeanette Kunsmann or Nele Stragier of the Belgianbased office L’Escaut, give an insight into methods of operation that deliberately deviate from those of traditional architectural practices.

In addition to these considerations and ideas on the role of the architect, we nevertheless do not entirely ­get by a certain positioning of architecture: Nikolai Frhr. v. Brandis therefore discusses which type of space offers architecture its potential and its subsequent impacts on the profession.

This issue of Horizonte – Journal for Architectural Discourse asks specifically for this more and seeks far beyond the conceptual boundaries of the profession.

Eventually, the architect remains as an individual who searches for his position in a pluralistic society.

Thereby tracing the personal more of architecture happens inevitably.

But how might the contemporary role of architects be defined aside from traditionally induced constraints of the architectural practice? What alternative career paths arise from this development and what are the consequences of this change for our social and built environment?

Wisconsin, im Mittleren Westen der USA , geboren und verbrachte den größten Teil seiner Kindheit dort. Die Familie seiner Mutter, die uni­ tarische Großfamilie Lloyd Jones, war aus Wales hierher in die Gegend von Spring Green ausgewandert. Entsprechend Wrights Kindheitser­ innerungen waren es Pioniere, die das Land mühsam erschlossen hat­ ten. Er beschreibt diese Zeit als einen monotonen Rhythmus aus Tagen harter Arbeit bis zur Erschöpfung, die regelmäßig von Sonn­tagen unterbrochen wurden, Sonntagen, deren Ablauf durchstrukturiert der Kirche und der Gemeinschaft gewidmet waren.

Im Gegensatz zum Vater, einem baptistischen Prediger, scheint ­die mütterliche Familie im Tal von Spring Green auf Wright prägenden Einfluss ausgeübt zu haben. Das Landleben, die › Pionierarbeit ‹ und die familiäre und religiöse Gemeinschaft hatten ihn nachhaltig be­ eindruckt.

Als sein Vater die Familie im Streit verlässt, ändert Frank Lincoln Wright seinen zweiten Vornamen zu Lloyd, um die Verbundenheit zur Familie seiner Mutter zum Ausdruck zu bringen und beginnt als Zeich­ ner in einem Ingenieurbüro. Nebenbei besucht er einige Vorlesungen an der University of Wisconsin in Madison, was dann auch Wrights einzige Hochschulbildung bleiben sollte. Nach zwei Jahren, als sein ­Onkel Jenkin Lloyd Jones, ein unitarischer Prediger, den Auftrag für die All Souls Unitarian Church in Chicago an das Büro von Joseph ­Lyman ­Silsbee vergab, wechselte Frank Lloyd Wright in dessen Büro.

Zum ersten Mal war Wright in der Großstadt. Chicago erlebte da­mals, nach dem Großen Brand, einen unvergleichbaren Aufschwung. Alle zehn Jahre verdoppelte sich die Einwohnerzahl, Grundstücks- und Immobilienpreise schossen in ungeahnte Höhen. Mit dem Home In­ surance Building wurde gerade das erste moderne Hochhaus errichtet und kurz darauf nochmals aufgestockt und Adler & Sullivan arbeite­ ten am Auditorium Building, dem damals größten Gebäudekomplex der USA mit einer Vielzahl technischer Neuheiten, wie automatischer Klimatisierung. Wäre das Auditorium Building nicht in aller Munde gewesen, Wright hätte nie von Adler & Sullivan gehört. Doch nun war der Job bei Silsbee nur noch ein Sprungbrett. Nach weniger als einem Jahr schon heuerte er bei Adler & Sullivan an, die einen Zeichner für ­ihr Groß­projekt suchten.² Unter Sullivan stieg Wright binnen Jahresfrist zum leitenden An­ gestellten auf. Er gewann sein Vertrauen und nannte ihn fortan seinen › lieben Meister‹ (auf Deutsch). Wright heiratete Catherine Tobin, die er in der All Souls Unitarian Church kennengelernt hatte. Sie nahm ihn damals, den Neffen des Predigers, nach der sonntäglichen Messe sprichwörtlich an der Hand und führte ihn erstmals in die Gesellschaft von Chicago ein.³ Wright schaffte es im Zuge der Hochzeit sogar, Sul­ livan neben einem Fünfjahresvertrag auch gleich ein Darlehen für ein eigenes Haus abzuringen. Und Sullivans Bedenken sollten nicht unbe­ gründet bleiben : » I know your taste ... no › extras ‹.«⁴ Jedenfalls baute Wright sich sein erstes eigenes Haus in Oak Park, damals einem Vorort von Chicago und gründete eine Familie. Seine Mutter – nach wie vor wichtigste Bezugsperson in seinem Leben – zog in die Nähe.

Als rechte Hand von Sullivan war Wright eigentlich von früh bis abends in die Projektarbeit des Büros eingebunden. Da das Büro prinzipiell jedoch keine Einfamilienhausprojekte annahm, leitete Sullivan diese jeweils an Wright weiter, der sie nach Feierabend be­ arbeiten sollte. ­Neben dem Talent Wrights wird wohl auch das Inte­ resse ­Sullivans ­eine Rolle gespielt haben, sein Darlehen von Wright zurückbezahlt zu bekommen. Dieser investierte jedoch recht freizügig in sein Wohnhaus und erweiterte es beständig. Wright sah sich bald ­ge­zwungen, noch zusätzliche eigene Aufträge anzunehmen, um sich und die Familie finanziell einigermaßen über Wasser zu halten. Als Sullivan davon er­fuhr, setzte er Wright vor die Tür.⁵ 1893, nach dem Rauswurf bei Sullivan, eröffnete Wright im Alter von 26 Jahren sein eigenes Büro. Da er sich ja bereits einen Namen ge­macht hatte und auch noch offene Aufträge anstanden, konnte er von Anbeginn an überaus erfolgreich Wohnhäuser bauen, die später sogenannten ›Prairie Houses‹. Sie standen noch deutlich unter dem Einfluss von Arts-and-Crafts, sollten jedoch erstmals auf stilistische Anleihen in der europäischen Architektur- und Kunstgeschichte ver­ zichten und regionale handwerkliche Besonderheiten zum Ausdruck

bringen. Durch Veröffentlichungen in populären Zeitschriften wie ­ adies­Home Journal wurden sie einer breiten Öffentlichkeit bekannt.

Schon 1898 verlegte Wright sein Büro, das zwischenzeitlich im ­Steinway Hall Building in Chicago war, wieder in sein Wohnhaus in Oak Park.

Er konnte die Miete kaum noch aufbringen und ein Groß­teil seiner Ein­ familienhausprojekte befand sich ohnehin in den Vor­orten. Außerdem wuchs die Familie auf sechs Kinder deutlich an. Für die laufenden Kosten und den Unterhalt seiner Familie reichte das Geld kaum, so­ dass Wright an unterschiedlichsten Stellen Schuldenberge anhäufte.

Nichtsdestotrotz besaß er Pferde und ein Auto, pardon einen Stod­ dard-Dayton. Jenen luxuriösen Tourenwagen, der kurz darauf das erste Rennen in Indianapolis gewinnen sollte. Spätestens seit der Zeit bei Sullivan hatte Wright nämlich nicht mehr nur einen kostspieligen Geschmack, sondern entwickelte auch eine Vorliebe für technische Neuheiten, allen voran Autos. So dürfte sein Stoddard-Dayton annä­ hernd den Wert seines Hauses gehabt haben. Wrights Auftragsbücher waren schließlich auch gut gefüllt. Bis 1909 wurden etwa hundert­ fünfzig seiner Entwürfe realisiert. Frank Lloyd Wright war längst ein bekannter Architekt – bekannt für Einfamilien­­häuser, Wohnungsum­ bauten und Unitarier-Kirchen.

Die große Anzahl an Projekten wird zweifellos zu Routine geführt haben. Größere Aufträge blieben aus. Wrights Familienleben war mit den sechs Kindern ausgefüllt und der Wochen- und Jahresrhythmus von den bürgerlichen und religiösen Ritualen bestimmt. Sein gelber ­Stoddard-Dayton Roadster hätte ihn wohl aus der Vorstadt-Enge herauskatapultieren sollen, doch sein Sohn John bemerkte dazu : »Dad was k­ ept busy paying fines.«⁶ Selbst wenn Geld für Wright nie ein ­Hinderungsgrund war, müssen die vielen offenen Rechnungen und im­ mer neuen Darlehen von Freunden und Bekannten ihn ständig weiter in die Enge getrieben haben.⁷ Als sich die Möglichkeit auftat, seine bisheri­ gen Projekte mit dem Berliner Ernst Wasmuth Verlag zu veröffentlichen, ergriff Wright die Chance. Als er wiederum ein ausreichendes Darlehen aufgetrieben hatte, machte er sich zusammen mit Mamah Boswick Che­ ney, der Frau eines seiner früheren Bauherren, auf den Weg nach Europa.

Ein Skandal.

Frank Lloyd Wright, der angesehene Architekt, verheiratet und Vater von sechs Kindern brannte mit seiner Bauherrin durch, ebenfalls ver­ heiratet und Mutter zweier Kinder. Der plötzliche Verlust muss für die Familien der beiden ohnehin schmerzhaft, gar traumatisch gewesen sein. Im scheinheilig - puritanischen Chicago der Jahrhundertwende bedeutete er jedoch die gesellschaftliche Ächtung aller. Frank Lloyd Wright und › Mrs. Edwin Cheney ‹ wurden zum Dauerthema in der Presse und auch in Europa genau beobachtet. Ihr Ehebruch, das Ver­ lassen der Familien, der Kinder wurde zum Inhalt der sonntäglichen Predigten in Oak Park.

in Fiesole in der Toskana bereitete Wright derweil die Veröffentli­ chung seiner Arbeiten vor. Neben dem repräsentativen Portfolio war ebenfalls eine Ausstellung in Vorbereitung, sowie ein umfangreiches Programm aus Buchvorstellungen. Ausgeführte Bauten und Entwürfe von Frank Lloyd Wright, das sogenannte Wasmuth Portfolio, erschien 1910 und wurde praktisch über Nacht zur einfluss­reichen Grund­lage der jungen europäischen Architektengeneration. Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe und Gropius, die 1910 alle bei Behrens in Berlin arbeite­ ten, hatten es studiert. Raymond, Schindler und Neutra sollten in der Folge für Wright arbeiten, Dudok und der spätere DeStijl waren un­ übersehbar vom Wasmuth Portfolio beeinflusst.

Nach dem Durchbruch in Europa bedurfte es nun eines Neuanfangs in den USA . Das Paar musste zurück nach Amerika, die finanziellen Mittel waren allmählich aufgebraucht. Doch nach der gesellschaft­ lichen Ächtung wurde eine Fortsetzung von Leben und Arbeit in Chicago­praktisch unmöglich. Und nachdem er mit den Banken ­längst auf Kriegsfuß stand, war er schließlich wieder auf die Unterstüt­ zung seiner Mutter angewiesen. Diese verkaufte ihr Haus und kaufte stattdessen Land in Spring Green, Wisconsin, da wo ihre Verwandten lebten und Frank Lloyd Wright seine Kindheit verbrachte. Vermutlich zauderteWright anfänglich mit einem Leben in Spring Green und hatte schon fertige Entwürfe für ein neues Wohn- und Atelierhaus in Chicago im Gepäck, sowie Pläne für das Haus seiner Mutter. Im Laufe des Jahres 1911 – Wright war bereits zurück in den USA, gesellschaft­ lich ausgegrenzt und vor neue finanzielle Herausforderungen gestellt – änderte er seine Pläne. Das schon im Bau befindliche Haus für seine Mutter wurde deutlich erweitert. Räume für Angestellte und ein grö­ ßerer Gebäudeteil wurden hinzugefügt, in dem Garagen, Ställe und Wirtschaftsräume, sowie Lager- und Kühlräumen im Keller unterge­ bracht waren. Die Brunnenanlage wurde wesentlich vergrößert. Das Haus wurde zu einer Farm, die sich im Wesentlichen selbst versorgen musste. Selbst die Energie musste weitgehend vor Ort gewonnen werden, denn eine Elektrizitätsversorgung gab es zu dieser Zeit noch ­nicht im Tal.⁹ Und schließlich bekam die Farm, wie auch alle ande­ ren ­Häuser des walisisch-stämmigen Lloyd Jones-Clans in der Region, einen walisischen Namen : ›Taliesin‹. Nachdem Wright pflichtschuldig Weihnachten 1911 mit den Kindern in Oak Park verbrachte, zog er noch vor ­dem Jahreswechsel mit Mamah und deren Kindern in Taliesin ein. »Taliesin sollte außer einem Architektenstudio und einem Wohnhaus auch ein Landgut sein. Dort wollte ich ein unkonventionelles Leben führen.«¹⁰ – Frank Lloyd Wright versuchte sich als Farmer und Selbst­

versorger. Er schwärmte von den Feldern, den Tieren, dem Duft und Geschmack von Taliesin – und der Freiheit, die er hier hatte.¹¹ Keine drei Jahre später, Wright war gerade in Chicago – auf seiner ersten größeren Baustelle, den Midway Gardens, lief sein Hausan­ gestellter Amok. Er tötete Mamah, deren Kinder und vier weitere Personen und steckte Taliesin in Flammen. Nur der Büroteil und die verkohlten Schornsteine blieben stehen. Auf dem Weg zurück nach Taliesin muss Wright die Details nach und nach aus den Zeitun­ gen erfahren haben, noch bevor er in Spring Green eingetroffen war.

Nach dem ersten Skandal stürzte sich die Presse nun auf den Schick­ salsschlag. Die Moralprediger in Oak Park müssen ihre Genugtuung ge­funden haben.

Physically I sagged. Boils now broke over my back and neck. I lost weight. ... I had never glasses, but now I had to have them. These came between me and my work for the first time.«¹² 12

Taliesin wurde wieder aufgebaut. Im folgenden Jahr 1915 wurde Wrights Projekt Midway Gardens in Chicago eröffnet und gefeiert. Außerdem bekam er den Auftrag für das Imperial Hotel in Tokio. Auf der Reise dorthin wurde er bereits von Miriam Noel, einer exzentrischen Schriftstellerin begleitet. Ihr war es gelungen, Wright in den Abgründen seines Seelen­ lebens abzuholen. Und nachdem Catherine im Jahr 1922 schlussendlich in die Scheidung von Wright einwilligte, war für Wright der Weg frei, Miriam zu heiraten. Doch womöglich lebte die Beziehung tatsächlich nur vom Oszillieren zwischen den seelischen Abgründen beider. Nach nur einem Jahr verlangte Wright die Scheidung von seiner morphium­ süchtigen Frau, die später in einer Nervenklinik starb. 1923 war aber auch das Jahr des Großen Erdbebens von Tokio, das nahezu die gesamte Stadt zerstörte. Wrights Imperial Hotel hingegen blieb aufgrund seiner freitragenden Konstruktion nahezu unbeschädigt und brachte Wright endlich Anerkennung abseits von Einfamilienhausprojekten und per­ sönlichen Eskapaden.

Die folgende Zeit muss nun zur entscheidenden Wende in Wrights Leben geführt haben. Der › liebe Meister ‹ Sullivan starb 1924 völlig verarmt und Wright finanzierte ein noch einigermaßen würdevolles Begräbnis. Die Mutter starb ebenfalls.

Wright, der mittlerweile einen eigens für ihn umgebauten Cadillac fuhr, lernte Olgivanna kennen, seine spätere dritte Ehefrau, mit der er bis zum Ende seines Lebens zusammen sein sollte. Sie zog 1925 in Talie­ sin ein, wo zu dieser Zeit auch Richard und Dione Neutra, sowie Werner Max Moser und seine Frau lebten. Kurz darauf, Olgivanna war gerade schwanger, brennt Taliesin zum zweiten Mal ab. Wrights Zeichnungen, sein Archiv und etwa 3000 Exemplare des Wasmuth Portfolios, alle ­Dokumente seines bisherigen Werkes, fielen dem Feuer zum Opfer.

Es folgte seine produktivste Zeit.

Taliesin wurde nur allmählich wieder aufgebaut. Es wurde vielmehr zu einem Experimentierfeld, das durch den Zukauf von Land später auf nahezu 600 Acre, 2,4 km², anwachsen sollte. Die gemeinsame Tochter wurde geboren – als Kind, dessen Eltern jeweils noch in einer anderen Ehe steckten. Dass dadurch sein Privatleben weiterhin regelmäßiges Thema in der Presse war, spielte für Wright längst keine Rolle mehr.

Er war ohnehin schon gesellschaftlicher Außenseiter und hatte sich ­über die Jahre seine übertriebene Arroganz zugelegt, für die er später ­gemeinhin bekannt wurde.

Sein weiteres Schaffen war von dieser Arroganz geprägt, vom Trotz und dem durchaus rücksichtslosen Spiel mit Grenzen und Konven­ tionen. Freiheit wird zu seinem bestimmenden Motiv – Freiheit ge­ genüber Abhängigkeiten und moralischen Konventionen, Freiheit ­wie Wright sie seit Jefferson in der US-Verfassung garantiert sah. ­Und keine Frage : Das Automobil war für ihn Ausdruck dieser Freiheit.

Wright hatte schon sehr früh die Bedeutung des Automobils auf das Alltagsverhalten erkannt und die räumlichen und architektonischen Möglichkeiten, die es bot. Während seiner Zeit in Oak Park hatte er bereits Tankstellen entworfen und bei jeder Gelegenheit Garagen in seine Projekte integriert, noch bevor er selbst der Erste weit und breit wurde, den man wegen Verkehrsdelikten zur Kasse bat. Später folgten eine ganze Reihe von Typologien für das Auto, von denen die ein­fachste, der Carport, auf Wright zurückgeht. Sein späterer Show­ room für den legendären Autohändler Max Hoffman in Manhattan ­aus den 1950er Jahren setzt bis heute Maßstäbe in der Präsentation. Hoff­ man wusste dies übrigens durchaus zu schätzen und bedankte sich bei Wright, neben dem Honorar, mit zwei Fahrzeugen von Mercedes-Benz, einen Typ 300 – den damals nahezu alle deutschen Wirtschaftsgrößen und auch der Bundeskanzler fuhren – und einen 300SL-Flügeltürer, den Traum-Sportwagen der High Society.

Wesentlich nachhaltiger muss für Wright jedoch die Bekanntschaft mit Henry Ford gewesen sein, für den er, kurz bevor er mit Mamah nach Europa aufbrach, die Villa in Fair Lane bauen wollte. Der weit­ sichtige Ford hatte in den 1920er Jahren begonnen, sogenannte ›Village Industries ‹ voranzutreiben. Er hatte erkannt, dass zahlreiche Komponenten, die er für die Automobilproduktion benötigte, nicht zwangsläufig vor Ort in den großen Fabriken in der Großstadt pro­ duziert werden mussten. Daher wich er auf kleine Dörfer im Umland ­aus, wo er billig alte Mühlen kaufte oder eigene Wasserkraftan­ lagen installierte und in kleinen Zulieferbetrieben einzelne Bauteile und Komponenten ferti­genließ. Die Energie war dank Wasserkraft nahe­zu kostenlos und der Lohn, den Ford hier zahlte, war für die Landbevölkerung immer noch unverhältnismäßig hoch. Ford setzte

bei seinen Arbeitern bewusst auf lokale Farmer. Sie sollten durch die Arbeit bei Ford ein sicheres Auskommen für ihre Familie und Landwirtschaft finden und waren dadurch zufrieden, verlässlich und ­flexibel ein­setzbar. Schließlich hatten sie außer ihrer Arbeit bei Ford auch noch eine Farm zu bewirtschaften. Bis in die frühen vier­ziger Jahre entstanden auf diese Weise siebzehn ›Village Industries ‹ im Mittleren Westen der USA .

Frank Lloyd Wright wird Fords Experiment gekannt haben, als er ge­ gen Ende der 1920er Jahre begann, sich mit Broadacre City zu beschäf­ tigen, einem dezentralen Stadt-Landschaftsmodell, das von Anbeginn an durch rurbane Lebensweisen, also rurale und urbane, bestimmt werden sollte. Der Begriff der Rurbanität wurde damals gerade vom Soziologen Charles Josiah Galpin geprägt, der nur eine Autostunde von Taliesin entfernt, die sich wandelnde Alltagspraxis der ländlichen Be­ völkerung im Mittleren Westen untersuchte.

Auch wenn der Auto-Aficionado Wright sein Broadacre City als konsequente Umsetzung der Möglichkeiten des Automobils entwarf, so war es doch in erster Linie ein soziales Modell und ein Modell zur Landnutzung. Für Wright stand das Projekt klar in der Tradition Jeffersons : die Erschließung und Urbarmachung der Landschaft, eine Pionierleistung. Als Grundvoraussetzung für die persönliche Freiheit sollte jede Familie mindestens einen Acre Land besitzen, von dem sie sich ohne wirtschaftliche Abhängigkeiten selber ernähren könnte. In den Worten Henry Fords : »With one foot in agriculture, America is safe.«¹³ Fords Gedanken gingen dabei sogar noch wesentlich weiter : Er sah in den 1920er und 30er Jahren die Zukunft in Werkstoffen auf Basis nachwachsender Rohstoffe, sowie in pflanzlichen Treibstoffen.

Seine ›Village Industries ‹ hätten die Grundlage für eine effiziente Roh­ stoffversorgung werden sollen. Wie wir heute wissen, sollte alles ganz anders kommen.

Wright entwickelte Broadacre City bis zum Ende seines Lebens kon­ tinuierlich weiter.

Ganz zu Beginn stand vermutlich noch die Rechtfertigung seines eigenen Lebensentwurfes in Taliesin im Mittelpunkt. Doch schon in den 1930er Jahren gewann Broadacre City durch die Weltwirtschafts­ krise deutlich an politischer Brisanz und wurde schließlich nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg zum ideologischen Manifest des › American Way of Life ‹. Wrights Buch When Democracy Builds erschien nicht zufällig 1945. Viele der heute noch in Europa vorhandenen englischen Ausga­ ben stammen aus dem ›Property of the Information Services Branches of the United States Forces‹.

Mit When Democracy Builds und der später von ihm überarbeiteten und ergänzten Version The Living City entwickelte Wright ein um­ fassendes Gesellschaftsmodell für › Usonia ‹ – das Land der Zukunft, ­der bes­seren USA. Seine grundlegende gesellschaftliche Ursachen­

analyse hätte dabei problemlos der heutigen Krisenrhetorik entsprun­

gen sein können. So schrieb Wright über den Städter : » Über ihm, neben ihm und unter ihm, selbst in seinem Herzen, wenn er schläft , tickt unaufhörlich die Taxameteruhr der dreifachen Miete – der Miete für Grund und Boden, für Geld und für Ideen, jede einzelne von ihnen eine Peitsche für den unglück lichen ›Verbraucher ‹ in seinem nie endenden Kampf gegen die dauernd wachsende Produktion, die ihrerseits Antrieb ist zum Verbrauch : diese unersättliche Vermehrung nicht er ‑­ ar beiteten Geldes zu weiterer Machtausdehnung... Nur um das Tempo mithalten und abzahlen zu können – auf mehr hofft er schon gar nicht mehr...«¹⁴ 14

Für Wright war die moderne Großstadt ein ›Strudel‹ aus immer neuen Abhängigkeiten, dem längst alle realen Werte abhandengekommen seien. Sie sei geprägt von Egoismus, der dem wahren Individualismus entgegenstünde. Doch Demokratie sei, so Wright, » das Evangelium der Individualität.« In When Democracy Builds zeichnete er den Weg des wahren Individuellen, des Nomaden als dem › Prototyp des Demokraten ‹¹⁵ nach. Fast nebenbei erklärte er damit die Notwendigkeit des Automobils, das schon bald die Groß­ städte obsolet machen würde.

In der Folge entstünde mit Broadacre City eine neue Stadt-Land­­ schaft mit einer eigenständigen Architektur : der › Organic Architec­ ture ‹. » Die organische Architektur ist die Architektur, die erst in ihrer Auswirkung zur Geltung kommt : Es ist die Architektur, die dem Menschen dienstbar zu sein sucht, ... es ist die Architektur der Demokratie. ... Wirklicher Stil ist in allen Bauten zu finden und strahlt von ihnen aus, wenn er sich in natürlicher Weise aus der Natur des Bauproblems selbst entwickelt und in den Mitteln zu finden ist, mit denen gebaut wird. ...

Nur in diesem inneren Sinnen wird die freie Stadt Stil haben.«¹⁶ ­Die ­Radikalität undder Erfolg der europäischen Modernen, die in den 1930er Jahren in die USA strömten und hier dem ›Internationalen Stil ‹ zum Durchbruch verhalfen, müssen deutlich an Wrights Ego gekratzt haben, hielt er sich selbst doch für den größten Architekten Ameri­ kas. In Rückbesinnung auf seinen »lieben Meister« Sullivan (» Form ­follows function.«) sollte die Organic Architecture zur Architektur der Per­formanz werden.

Selbstredend sind alle Bauten, die auf Modelle und Illustrationen von Broadacre City zu sehen sind, realisierte und unrealisierte Entwürfe von Wright. Broadacre City wurde schlussendlich zur um­fassenden Selbstrechtfertigung und Selbstinszenierung Frank Lloyd Wrights.

Seine letzten großen Entwürfe, wenn auch unübersehbar vom Inter­ national Style beeinflusst, sollten sich nahezu trotzig gegen alles

Etablierte richten. Mit dem Museum Solomon R. Guggenheim in ­New York baute Wright noch einmal eine Antithese zum klassischen › Museums-Tempel ‹ und verhinderte praktisch alles, was in Kunst­ museen bis dato als heilig galt – Symmetrien und Gegenüberstellungen, Gruppierungen und Inszenierung durch gezielte Beleuchtung oder Po­ sitionierung, unterschiedliche Blickwinkel oder auch nur e­ ine einge­ hende, ruhige Betrachtung. Stattdessen wurde das Museum eine riesige offene Spirale, eine Rampe, fast wie eine Parkhausabfahrt.

»Once upon a time the conquering of physical or territorial realm was the new frontier. But to conquer sordid, ugly commercialism in this machine age ›bony fiber of the dry tree‹ ; this conquest is now ›the New Frontier‹. H R ZN T Your office’s name is the name of a river in Belgium as well as the street on which it is located. Why have you chosen this name?

What do you associate with it?

L ’ s c t The office is based in Rue de

l’Escaut. As our attitude is ›situated‹; tak­ ing the name of the place where the office is based, confirms our attitude of revolving around the place of human beings in our society, in the everyday.

We believe that truly active and vivid influences are discovered in the social, cultural, political and economical context within which the project has to take its place. This (back) ground creates the active context the project will have to deal with in its everyday life. To absorb the energies out of this soil gives earth to the project.

In this global context, we consider our­ selves in a research process that is fed by our own contingency, quite much deter­ mining, and by our consideration of that position within the larger debate of archi­ tecture. Our practice is rather the one of a laboratory, taking care of the internal conditions to produce relations between

people, these relations result in produc­ tions that look like architectures and take place into society.

H R ZN T What happens at your office, makes it a special place, doesn’t it?

L ’ s c t Our office is located on the sec­ ond floor of a three story high warehouse that L’Escaut owns in Brussels. The build­ ing is a tool, a place, a platform for exchange, experimentation and reflection, where we host performing artists (theater, dance, cine­ma), visual artists, as well as student workshops, lectures … Our work isnourished by the open interaction with people, shar­ ing knowledge as well as pleasure. Prepar­ ing a meal is as important as carrying out a coordination meeting or technical research.

H R ZN T Your office is located on the 2nd floor more or less between two levels ›dedicated to artistic practice‹, anyone can submit projects to you as long as they maintain the atmosphere of ›mutual curiosity‹. How would you describe this atmosphere of mutual curiosity?

L ’ s c T It is a state of awareness towards one another. We don’t simply rent a space.

When a project is submitted, we need one or more people from the L’Escaut team to be motivated by it so as to start a ›mutual curiosity‹ process.

The common lunch is then a good way to meet people and be curious in an informal way.

H R z n T How did the General Assembly come into existence and establish itself?

L ’ s c T The office was created in 1989

by Olivier Bastin, architect­scenographer and Micheline Hardy, actress­director­ scriptwriter­producer. In 2009 the practice of several architects working as a team, as a collective, as an exchange of visions and as an assembly of energies, is confirmed in the form of a cooperative company of 17 associates and three administrators. Each member of the team has a certain share in the company. The global responsibility is shared and engages the members through three decision levels: The General Assembly, composed of a majority of members of the team, formu­ lates the ambitions for the year to come and is ratified by one vote per person. The vote value is not connected to shares each member has.

The Board of Management, elected once a year by the General Assembly, is com­ posed by three members and is in charge of the executive management. Once a month they present the financial and administra­ tive situation to the team at the ›Pow Wow‹ (derived from ›Pow Wow‹, the historical assembly in North­America as a privileged moment in which every family meets and exchanges).

The ›Pow Wow‹ is the weekly meeting in which all members of the team take part and share the advancement and questions on the projects. Proposals for new projects submis­ sions are also discussed. It represents the de­ cision making tool based on consensus.

This way of operation guarantees the effec­ tive horizontal decision process. It creates a common sense of responsibility and devel­ ops the individuals.

H R z n T Who decides which projects are chosen to be developed?

L ’ s c T The team: anyone can fi ll the agenda file that is printed at the beginning of the meeting.

H R z n T What are the most common points of discussion in those meetings and in general between people of different professions?

L ’ s c T We discuss the advancement of the projects, the short­term financial man­ agement, the upcoming events/residencies in the building, submission to new proj­ ects. Everyone will generally have a subject linked to his work in the office during a ›Pow Wow‹ so there is no so called distinc­ tion between the architects and the ›other‹ professions.

H R z n T What are the first steps when beginning to work on a project?

L ’ s c T The process varies according to each circumstance of projects. Analy­ sis of the context: micro­macro scale and urban tissue/ social/political/spa­ Petite maison tial. We generally start with a 3D­ modeling of the existing context and building.

We use sketches, styrofoam or clay mod­ eling, even scale 1:1 or material tests if nec­ essary. We also do brainstorming sessions.

This actually depends on the skills of the people involved and what they consider useful for the completion of the design. We also use the ›Pow Wow‹ to present the re­ searches to the others not working directly on it. Search processes can also reappear during the advanced design stage.

H R z n T What role do your colleagues from different professions play in executing architectural projects?

L ’ s c T The people from L’Escaut which are not strictly architects are either close to the field of architecture (interior design­ ers, scenographers, urban planners, land­ scape designers) or to the field of cultural institutions (›cultural‹ project manager,

communication manager, etc.). Everyone is mainly responsible for their own expertise but anyone can participate in the debate that a project brings and influence the de­ cision process. ›Pow Wow‹ works well for that but informal discussions also do.

H R z n T Under which criteria are the project teams assembled?

L ’ s c T The fi rst discussions happen during the ›Pow Wow‹ to determine which projects are interesting and which external partners fit the most for the project (engi­ neers offices, sociologists, local architect partners, urban design, artist, graphic de­ signer, etc.)

One person of L’Escaut, generally some­ one motivated by the project, is in charge to prepare the submission form to the client (most of the time a public organization).

If we are shortlisted to make a proposal, we then organize the competition team accord­ ing to the motivation and agenda of each member.

H R ZN T Which kind of projects do you usually prioritise?

L ’ s c t We mainly work on public proj­ ects because they involve public space, or at least extensions of it. But we also work with private clients. It all depends on the scope of the project: it has to deal with the place of the human being in the society.

We can admit that every project generally deals with that, but many clients don’t care about it: we try to find those who care!

L ’ s c t All of us are linked one way or an­ other to art. As aside-from-the-office-art­ ists for some of us, or as art onlookers. This definitely affects our way of seeing, feeling, analyzing our environment.

Architecture is a creative profession but we do not consider our work as art. We have clients who need spaces, that’s a major dif­ ference. Nevertheless, we think that what we design sometimes deals with ›poesis‹.

We also regularly work with artists: they intervene in the reflexion and realisation for parts of buildings we design (light, fa­ çade, interior design, etc.). We also work on the technical conception and realisation for works of art.

H R ZN T What mundane things influence you the most in your projects with L’Escaut ?

L ’ s c t Historical background, previous uses of the spaces where we intervene, al­ ready existing contradictions, ›anecdotes‹ that can become thrilling when subtly reimple­mented …

full disclosure I’ve never read the Fountainhead, and I am not good at math. I work in the trenches; my architecture is full of redlines, quickie sketches, ugly models and color-coded email responses. The life of a practicing archi­ tect working in the trenches is far from how Architecture is seen in the public eye, gleamed through the lens of Iwan Baan PR materials – glossy renderings or photos. We need a typographic interpretation today’s state-of-affairs to edit illustrate an alternative reading of practice by encouraging a fresh look at process how something is made! and con­ tribute something messy, inclusive, intriguing and ultimately less cor­ rect. Perhaps adjusting the projected course of Architecture can be as big, bold, and dumb as Bjarke Ingels crossing something out.

working hard hardly working An adjustment is needed to reverse trends in architecture after a period of tremendous growth and abrupt recession. Our freshly educated gen­ eration of architects with seemingly limited options can make inroads shake things up! using new forms of expression and also politely ask those established in the field to please stop acting so stuck up correct.

Architecture today is suffering from exhaustion The word ›rigor‹ makes me tired. We are trained as a generation of form-finders and software experts but lack the pursuit of individual outlook essential to other artistic fields. Architecture’s embrace of software driven de­ signs and photorealistic renders does not encourage the kind of rep­

resentation stimulating artistic production needed for an avant-garde practice, which in turn is needed for Architecture to simulate stimu­ late! itself through a historical narrative.

We have matured to include professional practice into our vocabu­ lary, representing ourselves as specialist experts and foregoing our cultural capital, the on-going development of aesthetic craft. Despite our facility with PowerPointTM the language of our clients, we risk selling out shortsightedly capitalizing on and succumbing to green building trends, client demand or other financial pressures.

Architecture is an art form, not a service provider. The ground-up opportunity that social media provides allows for our generation to expose and express ourselves creatively in new ways and form new constituencies. It is in this manner that the unemployed funemployed! can enable themselves in the current bleakness job market.

rebuild refresh Populist forms of media are a driving commerce and we must take ad­ vantage. While a great deal of internal dialogue occurs within Archi­ tecture, it is mainly an insular and ever-more fragmenting discourse.

The only common denominator cannot be technical know-how of sustainability. As we move forward in the youtube/facebook/twitter/ myspace fill in the blank era, architects must be sure to voice their initiatives by challenging provocative views of the world around us.

The software component of our education allows us to extend beyond the technical and into the experimental. The alienation cre­ ated by the previous generations of abstract theorists dressed-inblack-intellectual has given way to ›Risky Business‹ (1983) savvy sport coats which is all well and good, but we youngsters still need a few wackos out there being artsy fartsy an avant-garde visibly operating on the fringe of the profession, (it can’t just be Ai Weiwei, Thomas Heatherwick and Olafur Eliason having all the fun).

Our fluency with these tools can also supplant golf older models of social networking which enabled architects to garner juicy commis­ sions yet ultimately exposed them to a thinning hairline discipline of practice as they slip into the rehearsed role of service provider.

We are trained in increasingly digital methods, yet losing part of the discipline that informed our icons, namely writing and drawing. The creative process is watered-down when software is used to produce rather than critique, (whether it be form-finding MayaTM or uber-dull RevitTM). The ultimate result is that the realness of building as a craft is taken for granted.

The problem facing architecture, or even all means of contemporary culture, is that people do not want the burden of thinking about the ›construction‹ of the world around them – it’s boring and too com­ plex; they prefer something easy, accessible and familiar. By shifting emphasis from a polished written essay or manifesto representation of our cherished profession to the mechanics of writing personal pro­ cess of those who work to make vision into reality, we can encourage a kind of self-awareness that is missing from understanding architec­ ture today. As the architecture process is collectively demystified, this interdisciplinarity radical inclusion! can close the feedback loop and create new criteria addressing the shared resources, interests and pri­ orities; a public correctness for the built environment.

The nature of the architectural profession is changing and with global and economic realities, it has become ever more pressing to reevalu­ ate the role of the architect in our modern society. The architect must reestablish his role as an artist and create spaces that have artistic value for the individuals within the space, as well as for the immedi­ ate surroundings, both built and natural. The concept of the archi­ tect-artist is not a new one ; in the 1980s architects like Bernard Tschumi, Zaha Hadid, and Peter Eisenman developed two- and threedimensional compositional studies to explore the larger theoretical foundations of their buildings. Not only were these pieces requisites of good design, but were statements in and of themselves.¹ These de­ signers recognised the intrinsic value of art and realised that

the duty of the architect is to create in a way that stimulates dialogue and moves the larger ideas and discussion – the narrative – of our built environment into new, innovative territory.

Now, more than ever, it is essential for the architect to realise his or her full potential as an artist and the power associated with the manipulation of the visual world. New information technologies bind our communities in ways never before encountered. Instant access to people, news, infor­ mation and social networks has created a world of flux – constantly changing, constantly updating. Architecture must respond to global­ ized information systems not just in terms of responsible design, but with a new architectural language that captures the › Zeitgeist ‹ of the fleeting. It is most important for the architect to recognize, that by building for our societies, we have an ability to affect change and craft the narrative that defines this period of history.

The question becomes : How can the architect construct and design in such a way that the built environment reconciles the new information state and guide a society’s perception of self through the individual that experiences the space? The individual plays the most basic and essential component of the architectural story, because for the first time in history there is not a singular narrative with a singular factor that ties us all together. Improved networking communications and outlets for self-expression have given everyone a voice. How does the architect respond to this phenomenon in a way that is relevant, inno­ vative, and meaningful? How does the architect as a designer and artist create more than just a habitable shell, but space that instigates dia­ logue between the people and objects that occupy it? The architect must acknowledge a twofold obligation : one is the architect-artist ability and power to shape the narrative and the second is to under­ stand that a plurality of spatial interpretations is critical to the suc­ cess of a space in order to affect the individual, beginning a dialogue that will expand from the individual experience to a group and on to a society. The result is a person who is not just a user of space but a participant with the space and the art inherent in good design.

The fast paced, non-linear nature of society’s network of communica­ tions means that the architect’s role must be primarily that of an artist as he works to shape the larger cultural dialogue of the modern era. To do this, the architect must understand that communications and infor­ mation has changed. To respond to this change, art must be recognized as the foundation of design. In order to express the art inherent in build­ ing, a simultaneous study of art and philosophy must occur.

Thanks to technological innovation, the world is more connected than ever. This means that the way we receive information has changed along with the pace at which we process that information. The spaces we inhabit have yet to respond to the non-linear, immersive nature of new media and connectivity. Toyo Ito said :

»Through the fusion of art and philosophy, the architect will be able to put into practice the ability to affect the social narrative by shaping the aesthetic world, moving the built world beyond the antiquated argument of form versus function.

How [can we] create a work of architecture as an entity while goods as entities are losing their significance, and […] build architecture that endures time while local communities are nullified, and the network of communications via media appears and disappears instantly […] We are required to solve the question of how to make fictional or video-image-like architecture […] we need to learn how to make ephemeral or temporary architecture […] We should […] build fictional and ephemeral architecture as a permanent entity.«² The built (permanent) must learn to respond to the new way in which we receive and process information. Mark C. Taylor, a philo­ sopher at Columbia University, argues that in this modern world of flux, updates, and connectivity, we must embrace flux rather than

fight it, and in doing so, we use a process of creativity and the experience of art to come to terms with con­ stant change.³ The architect must accept the responsibil­ ity of impacting the person who occupies that space on Toyo Ito, Tower of Winds, Yokohama, 1986 a fundamental, often sub­ conscious level, and the role this plays in the user’s understanding of their world and their system of value judgments.

In 1995 at the height of the dot­com era, Bernard Tschumi expressed the same sentiment as Taylor, continuing to hypothesise about the interactive architecture he first explored with his Parc de la Villette project in Paris from 1982–1998. Tschumi stated that, »Architecture is always about stability, either structural stability of the stability of the institution … architecture simultaneously [is] always challenged by the movement of bodies going through architecture, by various activities in it …«⁴ The notion of a permanent structure in a state of flux because of the users within that space was neglected in the 1990s and 2000s for an exploration of formalism, rather than activism. The study of ephemeral architecture embraced by the likes of Ito and Tschumi must be taken a step farther – the idea that the space is activated and is in constant change because of the people moving through it should come full circle. Processing rapid fire information has taught the cur­ rent generation to think in non­linear formats, creating in them the expectation that they will be able to and should be interacting with their space, creating a mutual dialogue. It is in this way that the step must be taken to create building participants, who create the spaces and a dialogue along with the architect.

The move from users to participants is possible when the architect embraces the simultaneous study of art and philosophy. Architects, as designers, are creators of two­ and three­dimensional art, which help the architect explore spatial relationships and develop the theory behind their forms. Critical to the success of a building is the abil­ ity to fully realize the intrinsic artistic value of the building and to understand that architecture, like art, is one interpretation of a way to solve a problem. This singular interpretation of the problem’s solu­ tion is the architect’s »selective recreation of [the artist’s] metaphysical 5 value judgments.«⁵ When thought of as a part of a larger process and Ayn Rand, »Art and Cognition« in The dialogue, this singular ›recreation‹ is experienced by the individuals Romantic Manifesto, Penguin, New York, 1969 viewing the schematic design materials – or in the case of architects 6 like Tschumi, Zaha, or Lebedeus Woods, the schematic pieces intended Sara Wilson Mckay and as standalone works of art – as well as the final built project, and is Susan R. A plural­ ity of interpretation is only possible through a back and forth, simultane­ ous dialogue between the creator, the creation, and audience.⁶ Achieving this kind of non­linear pluralism with an artistic architec­ tural dialogue means that the architect must understand that philosophically, the human mind is open to multiple Lebbeus Woods, 4|11, Confl ict Space, 2006 interpretations. Not only is art a reflection of the architect’s value judgments, but is a way for the ar­ chitect to concretise abstract ideas. The process of making and experi­ encing art is a tool for understanding abstract, metaphysical concepts, and makes their application to the self, possible. The process is appli­ cable to the experience of both the creator and viewer. The architect must accept that now, more than ever, the human brain has become adept at interpreting multi­faceted information and needs to be pre­ sented with opportunities to interpret different experiences laterally.

be considered to effectively impact the participant’s cognitive process and understanding of the world around them. The element of individ­ ual interpretation is critical to the dialogue and the application of the experience of space to everyday life.

The architect as an artist and philosopher will affect the social nar­ rative as the building is an expression of art that allows for lateral thinking, or a plurality of interpreta­ tion. As Mark Taylor suggests, it is by embracing the notion of ephemerality that will make possible a plurality of interpretation, and give validity to a building as an artistic expression, cre­ ating a dialogue with the participant.

Modern architects like Steven Holl are exploring this concept through the architectural process. Holl suggests Steven Holl and Solange Fabião, Cité de l’Océan et du Surf, Biarritz France, 2005­2011 the same sentiment as Taylor that the ambiguity of this generation has left the door open for the architect to explore and develop the imagination.

A building defines the social narrative on a variety of levels, start­ ing on the macro level, with the building’s surroundings, dictating how the story begins. As each participant begins this journey, he or she enters into a dialogue with the space, creating a depth to the story between the participants, the objects within that space, and the other people occupying the space. the space, a nonlinear narrative is formed which allows the user to be an active participant not only with the space but with the out­ come of the story. When the user is an active participant with the space, they become a player of a role in the narrative, defining the space, and thus becoming a ›co-creator‹ of the story along with the architect. As Frank Rose describes in his book, The Art of Immersion, »If individuals in the audience ›co-create‹ a story in some sort of give-and-take with the storyteller … The author starts the story ; the audience completes it. The author creates the characters and the situation they find themselves in ; the audience responds and makes it their own.«¹² Each space is open to individual interpretation but must be organized in a way that the story, or the building, makes sense. Referring to his theoretical work The Manhattan Transcripts, Tschumi explains that »the reality of its sequences does not lie in accurate transposition of the outside world, but in the internal logic these sequences display.«¹³ By carefully controlling movement and view through framing, spaces become activated, flexible, and in con­ stant flux, capturing the ephemeral spirit, and validating the archi­ tecture as an art piece with its own purpose.

Architecture in the 21st century should be about simultaneity ; »the sense that you can be seeing one thing and instantly switch to something else that’s occurring at the same time.«¹⁴ This can be achieved by mediating the pathway through the building using architectural nodes, structure, details, light, and materials that cue the participant as to where to go, and as to the possible interpretations of the space.

Through framing, layers, and controlled movement, perceptions of the space can be juxtaposed with the moments preceding or following it.

It allows for the building to be defined neither by form or function but by the movements by the participants within and their individualised experiences.

Each new technology eventually finds its way into art, and thus, becomes a way to influence our rationalization process. Immersive technology will inevitably find its way into architecture. The best example of this kind of experience is the video game ; an experience so life-like it has the ability to transport the player into movie-like settings, and real life-like circumstances. The video game allows the player to act out their own narrative, to interact with the story line, and make choices that influence the outcome of the game. This level of nonlinear storytelling must find an application in architecture. Ar­ chitecture has fallen behind social technology, and must now catch up. To create an architecture that is responsive to the needs of this new phenomenon, architecture must embrace simultaneity and non­ linear plot lines.

This type of emergent experience is necessary in a world where the line between reality and fiction is blurred or nonexistent. The way we receive real life information increasingly resembles interactive art forms, like video games, confusing our ability to put real life into per­ spective. It becomes increasingly more difficult to truly process the

difference between the real and the fiction. The built environment is an immersive reality that grounds us ; the story of the experience unfolds around the user and allows for the Hegelian plurality of inter­ pretation. By embracing ephemerality and architecture as a fiction, it forces the participant to open their eyes and engage their space ;

architecture is able to reawaken a sense of life in an age where the boundaries of ›reality‹ are dissolving. In this age, people are able to be immersed through an endless array of media experiences that ­speak not only to the power of our modern technology, but the power o­ f the human mind’s capacity for imagination. For architecture to re­ main relevant it is necessary that it achieves its potential to be one of the greatest means of enhancing and driving that imagination.

H R ZN T Your lecture topic, Transforming practices addresses contemporary architecture. What are the reasons and the forces that are changing the role of the architect?

G rrd r n mth A number of things happened in particular since the 60s, but you can see them in a new context. What the particular flavor of the new context is something what Alejandro Zara Polo has addressed in his essay Politics of the Surface. The fact is that since the 60s, we have this increase of management around doing a building.

So once you had the architect. Now, in Sydney for example, you have a lot of consul­ tants to do a small project. One consultant for gas, another for electricity, lightning etc. What this means is that for the classic architect who manages all these, specialisa­ tions are cut away from his control and this has an impact on several things.

All of a sudden you have those other peo­ ple with you on a similar level and a lot of

the architects’ time is spent managing these.

I have people in my office who are trained in architecture school but now spend all day writing faxes and sending emails. I think what all this does is becoming a self-fulfill­ ing prophecy, where the architect has less control, therefore, the result gets worse or the budget is blown … and then you blame the architect. So you can’t affect your proj­ ect but you can still get blamed for what be­ comes of it.

What happens is that the architect is ­slipping down this slope. I have been using the word ›agency‹. We are interested in the idea of what ›agency‹ architects can have, what they can do. It can be in building or outside building. We think the way the pro­ fession is now constructed, except in spe­ cial circumstances such as in Denmark, the architect is losing a lot of the agency, which is frustrating because you have the skills that the client or the public could benefit from and you’re not even able to give those skills because there is this wall in the way.

H R ZN T Maybe we can say that architecture is a holistic profession which must handle many different fields. What is actually the traditional architect?

G rrd r n mth What an architect is, can be answered in two completely sepa­ rate ways. The first issue is what architect can do (and I know this by talking to other disciplines). It is very rare to meet an engi­ neer that can think in a very holistic way across many issues but they exist, such as Cecil Balmond. But they are one in a hun­ dred. Most architects (that are at some level moderately skilled) are able to bring many complex things into a single project.

We saw this today in the Anna Amalia Li­ brary Weimar, built by Professor Hilde Barz Malfatti and Professor Karl-Heinz Schmitz, you can see that he managed in a very clear way to distillate many things like techni­ cal issues, complicated site problems into one piece. That is something that we alone are trained to do. That is the one answer to the question, the traditional architect using those skills. And now because of all the other layers of management you are less able to have impact on your work. Like you are having a piece of rubber and trying to push the way you want it but it won’t be the way you want it to be.

The second answer could be that in the Anglo world, the title of the architect was invented around building. The problem with this is, that while I can on the one hand say that we are the best person to collect to­ gether all sort of complex things, the reality is I don’t think we are.

In the current environment we can’t be the master builder because the process be­ came too complex. We can of course know a lot about wood but we will never be the good carpenter, who knows a thousand times more on the subject. So again you have a funny situation where your role is based on something that you are good at but not great at. The position of the architect in relation to the whole orchestra is not clear.

So in short, historically you can say that the architect is the conductor. Nowadays we probably even don’t want to be this he­ roic conductor but we still have a role like a film director. This idea scares people out­ side of the profession and that is a problem.

H R ZN T The architect is not just a conductor and builder but also something more …

G rrd r n mth … in English you would say ›public intellectual‹. The idea is that you are a teacher, using your knowl­ edge and sharing your ideas with people.

And in a funny way, Bjarke Ingel’s little comic book Yes is more is a good example, a pedagogic way of showcasing what an archi­ tect can do. And the city is the last subject.

For example, there is this big develop­ ment site in Sydney central, the Baranga­ roo. We were dealing with that topic last semester, inviting the key people from the city development involved in the project to hold a lecture. The first was the head of gov­ ernment, the next was a transport planner, the next was an original judge of the com­ petition, a design adviser, an economist etc.

There are so many images of this project, everyone shows the exactly same slideshow but each person tells a different story with a different opinion. The students should see those lectures which showed how compli­ cated it is in the city. And the role of archi­ tects is to understand what is going on. You can’t do anything until you understand this complexity. It is almost at a level of military thinking with a certain degree of tactical decision making. Our role is to understand this complexity and this is the skill that re­ mains often unaddressed in schools, which is needing serious analysis. Without talking to those different roles, and understanding their positions, students are designing a funny reality.

H R ZN T Aaron Betsky talks about ›Architecture Beyond Building‹. Your curating contribution to the Australian pavilion on the 13th Biennale in Venice, Formations, addresses a similar discussion. Generally, opinions and thoughts from other professions have encouraged architects to see themselves in contexts other than building, for instance humanitarian issues. Do you see an increasing awareness of the architect’s social responsibility?

G rrd r n mth I was reading just the other day, that Eisenmann claimed this year’s Biennale was good unlike the one done by Betsky. Of course Eisenman is interested in what exists within archi­ tecture which has to do with the issue of architecture as autonomous object. That is what I don’t understand because building is engaging with politics and other stuff and the buildings are clearly a function of this combination.

What I like about Betsky is his honesty about the situation of architecture. All he is saying is that we are all architects. There are buildings that are not a piece of archi­ tecture but you might see what the architect was doing or thinking about. He is separat­ ing the activity of an architect from the building. Betsky is arguing that as soon you are in school, drawing, doing models, read­ ing philosophy, you are an architect. The problem is that people don’t understand it that way and they think it is an anti-build­ ing’s idea. Betsky is in a way underrated; his idea is profoundly important and helps us to understand what we were interested in while doing Formations. In the 70s in the USA , if architects wanted to save the world, they left the profession and did all sorts of volunteer work. There was a sense of crisis in the profession.

What we see in Formations is that nowa­ days people remake the profession which is a very different thing. We noticed that schools are becoming interested in humani­ tarian work in the last couple of years. For example there is one in my generation who

is doing humanitarian work whereas a quar­ ter of studios today are dealing with this topic. Those people who do social work are not leaving the profession; they use their professional tools and skills to actually help people.

So in case of Formations there is Paul Pholeros with his project ›Health Habitat‹ who fixes houses for indigenous people with a small budget. Every community he helps, the visits of hospitals drop by 40 percent.

He made the connection of the architect with his knowledge like water installations and health. The UN gave him an award by saying that he is more effective than peni­ cillin. The point is, that he is not throwing his architectural knowledge aside but is us­ ing his skills by rearranging his office and applying his focus on humanitarian projects by being a health planner. I think the hu­ manitarian field is a very interesting labora­ tory for the reorganisation of the profession.

H R ZN T Having mentioned the role of the architect, as someone who has social responsibility; what aspects of architecture would you describe as being crucial for society?

G rrd r n mth I think what’s impor­ tant still, in particular for people moving into cities increasingly, is that architects do their best to make places which soci­ ety will understand. The Opera House in Sydney is a good example with its stairs in front where people protest, meet up, and have rock concerts. So it is a space where the city can look at itself, like it was the town square in the old days. This is one of the best and most generous things that ar­ chitects can do.

What we are always trying to do when we work in a city is to provide those places for the city to understand itself, but also in a build­ ing inside to show people something about their city. It is a different agenda than being fo­ cused just on the form. The point is that prob­ ably the best work is not about ourselves but showing people something about their place.

H R ZN T In times of globalisation when architects can practice anywhere, in particular in cities which are not native to them, to what extend is the architect capable of opening up those possibilities, helping the city to see itself?

The Opera House is an interesting example. There are two ways of helping a place. One way would be, let us take Weimar as an example, where an architect both living and working in does work, which perfect suits the city because he/she knows the city and all its character­ istics well.

The other thing that you can do as an outsider is to give other knowledge, like for example in Sydney. Jorn Utzon won the competition not even knowing how Sydney looked like, back then in the 50s. I think good architects are good at reading patterns and we all have a vision and you can see things that locals can’t. So there are two different G rrd

things, the gift of the local and the gift of the outsider which is to see your place in a new way. I think it is an ethical question when you work overseas.

H R ZN T What were the first thoughts that occured to you when you heard the topic More Than Architecture?

G rrd r n mth I liked the question of what an architect does. What I liked about it a lot is how it opens up the question what an architect does and what Betsky would say is › beyond building ‹ . I would say that architecture is a tool which we have but the idea of › more than ‹ is the question to be asked right now.

You can put some pressure on your pro­ fessors, questioning the agenda and a good profesor should take some good questioning.

Recovering Agency Gerard Reinmuth

PostFormations Formations – the exhibition for the Australian Pavilion at the 2012 Venice Biennale of Architecture – emerged from a range of issues that have inspired architects to abandon conventional practice models.

A­desire for greater agency across humanitarian, media, community, manufacturing, artistic and political domains prompted the develop­ ment of new and unexpected formations for achitectural practice.

These examples provided an antidote to the stress of a discipline which has had to endure an erosion in its capacity to effect change.

While each of the practices in Formations dealt with spatial issues, few were engaged directly in the design and procurement of build­ ings. The lack of traditional built outcomes revealed a second anxi­ ety in the profession about the importance of building. For instance, is ­it ­more important to influence political process as one of the new ­breeds of design or urban consultants, or through the implementation and construction of extraordinary building?

Theory and Practice In the face of contemporary issues such as climate change, political instability and social transformation, it has been hard to make claim for the agency of an individual building. This situation is worsened

by stereotypes of architects as dilettantes, who have little relevance beyond the consumer of such luxury goods as the buildings they cre­ ate. If buildings are not to be consigned to a late-capitalist fate as consumer items, what is it about the way our discipline understands it­self that we must repair or redefine?

Stan Allen in The Future that is Now, from Architecture School: Three Centuries of Educating Architects in North America (2011) sug­ gests that the current dilemma was forged in the 1980s when archi­ tectural theory was widened to include cultural studies and literary criticism. Allen posits Henry Cobb’s 1985 Walter Gropius lecture at Harvard as evidence of this schism: » ... on the one hand, the aca­demic setting would seem to separate architecture from its vital sources of nourishment in the ‘ real world ’ of practice, while on the other hand its entrepreneurial, practice-oriented character would seem to devalue architecture as a discipline. « Decoupled from the pace of making buildings, the rapid proliferation of new theories about what architecture might be or can do soon outpaced material production. Education programmes began producing­ » legions of bad novels, bad sociology, bad psychology, bad philosophy and bad movies being presented at juries as advanced ­architectural ‘ research ’, « according to Alejandro Zaera-Polo.

Patrik Schumacher’s 2008 text, Parametricism as Style – Parametri­ cist ­Manifesto, is an example as to one of the many attempts to inter­ vene in this increasingly fragmented situation. Schumacher ad­vocated for Parametricism as a new style in the tradition of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This strangely historicist ap­proach has nu­ merous faults, not least of which is the near exclusive focus of digital design on technique. The perils of this approach are now evident in the digital design programmes started with fanfare by key inter­ national schools in the 1990s, but which now struggle for relevance beyond exhibition installations. However, the most disturbing aspect is Parametricism’s lack of participation in the political questions that surround architectural production. Richard Goodwin has labelled this focus on truth in the processing of data as a sinister, hyper-modernist project which ignores political or social respon­sibility in favour of the processing power in the machine to negotiate parameters as a display of virtuosity in itself.

The teflon-politics of contemporary architecture cannot be blamed on Parametricism alone when arguably the most popular agent in the contemporary discipline, Rem Koolhaas, has made a virtue of surfing flows of capital. OMA’s positioning has made it acceptable to margi­ nalise any form of › critical practice ‹ as a nagging irritant at the pe­ riphery of the discourse. OMA’s acceptance of any politics by which capital is accumulated, has been cleverly shrouded in a series of con­ tradictory pronouncements to reassure as to the fact that, for example, CCTV would lead to cultural change within Chinese state media or that the building might › kill the skyscraper ‹ – claims which are for­ gotten or readjusted by the time the projects have been built and fees

banked. Such focus has resulted in major commercial success through its suitability to one of the primary tendencies of contemporary capi­ talism – the managerialist doctrine.

The Rise of Managerialism It has been widely discussed that the rise of managerialism has bought many problems to urban planning, not least of which is the deskilling of those in government and the replacement of professional expertise with expert managers who have little disciplinary knowledge.

Managerialism has so infected the way we practise that it has be­ come a recognised methodology, practised by OMA but even usurped in effectiveness by Koolhaas’s alumni Bjarke Ingels (BIG) who can convince clients that no problem is unsolvable and no contradiction too great to design process. However, as Kieran Long warns in the ­December issue of Arkitekten, Ingels’s ›Yes is more ‹ slogan is predi­ cated on a non-critical, ideology-free rhetoric, which is hard to coun­ ter given its optimism.

As the discipline continues to be questioned for its efficacy and relevance, the most successful architects adopting managerialist approaches focus on the consumption of values as opposed to their creation. Indeed, Slavoj Žižek (The Architectural Parallax, 2009) sug­ gests that everything we do is political, and that basing work in a simplistic ideological frame. Žižek reminds us that any ideology can be transformed into a consumptive act; for example, in the provision of sanitation in Africa and South America by a Starbucks foundation is contingent on purchasing Ethos water. Žižek explains: »This is how capitalism, at the level of consummation, integrated the legacy of 1968, the critique of alienated consummation ... we do not just buy and consume a product – we simultaneously do something meaningful, show our care and global awareness ...«

Materialising Politics How are we to resolve both the theory and practice disjunction and to find a method of engagement with the political economy which re­

leases us from an impotent consumption by managerialist processes? Žižek reminds us that normative ethics must guide our actions, a prescriptive focus essential to a discipline centred on materialisation.

Alongside this, Alejandro Zaera-Polo’s early writings for El Croquis, insisted on a materialist critique in architecture while also including a strong political bias; a position best exemplified in his seminal text from 2008, The Politics of the Envelope, written as his practice was working on a range of retail projects, especially in the UK . Search­ ing for agency in the highly managed and over-consulted context of British practise and procurement, Zaera-Polo radically posited the en­ velope of a project as the element where architects could be sure to op­ erate with minimal intervention and thus where the political agenda ­must be deployed.

Redefining the profession Magali Sarfatti Larson in Behind the Postmodern Façade: Architectural Change in Late Twentieth Century America (1993) described the paradoxical bind between professional autonomy and heteronomy, ex­ posing the mechanism via which a theory-practice split would weaken the profession causing it to be vulnerable to managerialist approaches applied from without, noting: » [an] autonomous pursuit of architecture and the heteronomous conditions of its making insert a permanent contradiction into the heart of the profession’s practice and even of its discourse. « She purports that disabling effects of this contradiction was manifest in a retreat from the city, for much of the past century, in favour of a focus on the built object; moving » from the aspiration of ‘ building cities ’ and instead ... toward the design of single objects, however gigantic or prototypical. « A move towards the service of capital rather than its direction.

Abolishing the Divide Whether our actions come from theory, practice, or the space between, what is certain is the need to focus our attention on restoring the rel­ evance of the profession. Relevance will not be achieved by any means

other than a full engagement in the political and economic contexts that surround every element of our built environment. In addressing these contexts we must also remember the power of activism as an agent for change: without activism realised in publications, marches, protest and civil unrest society would still be struggling for the provi­ sion of equal rights for all; indigenous rights; or, even from a purely architectural perspective, acknowledging the effects of asbestos. In a managerialist world these major societal changes would have oc­ curred at very different speeds, if at all.

By restoring the momentum of the discipline via a more produc­ tive and relevant theory-practice relationship – and by deploying this relationship vis-à-vis processes which make explicit the opposing po­ litical and economic forces present in any project, and thus demand a genuine negotiation between them – the discipline can find new re­ levance. Relevance borne in these conditions necessarily comes with the tensions and disagreements that accompany having something to say. Having nothing to say, or lacking the tools to bring conflicts to light, diminishes our work to the production of elaborate luxury goods for those who are so inclined to commission them.

More Ethics: More Aesthetics Über die Architektur von

Lacaton & Vassal

Als Anne Lacaton und Jean Philippe Vassal im Jahr 2000 für den fran­ zösischen Beitrag auf der 7. Architekturbiennale in Venedig einge­ laden wurden, war ihr Vorschlag radikal: Passend zu dem Motto der Hauptausstellung Less Aesthetics – more ethics wollten sie, das zur Verfügung stehende Budget des Beitrags für den Kauf von Wasser­ pumpen für Afrika investieren – in Venedig sollte dieses Projekt dann in einer Dokumentation zu sehen sein. Für die Verantwortlichen war dieser Vorschlag dann doch zu viel ›Ethics‹ – sie sagten den angefrag­ ten Kuratoren ab.

Die Konsequenz dieser Anekdote, dass ein Architekturbüro lieber auf die ehrenvolle Aufgabe verzichtet, auf der Biennale in Venedig auszustellen, als sein Konzept den Wünschen und Anregungen der Veranstalter anzupassen, unterstreicht im Fall von Lacaton & Vassal das radikale Verständnis ihrer architektonischen Position: Kompro­ misse gehen die beiden Architekten ihre Grundsätze betreffend nicht ein. Warum diese Verweigerung? Dahinter steckt kein egozentrisches Künstlergehabe, sondern eine starke Haltung, die aus dem Selbstver­ ständnis der beiden Architekten gewachsen ist.

Anne Lacaton und Jean Philippe Vassal gelten als Vertreter ei­ ner Position, die nicht auf spektakuläre Architekturen abzielt – sie sind damit das Gegenbeispiel der Stararchitekten, die sich mit ihren Gebäude-Skulpturen im Stadtbild verewigen. Stehen bei anderen Architekten Form, Funktion und Schönheit eines Gebäudes im Vor­ dergrund, setzen sie ihre Prioritäten anders – ohne dass dabei die ge­ nannten Aspekte vernachlässigt werden. Es ist eine stille Architektur mit einer Ästhetik, die sich aus einer Authentizität des Projekts entwickelt.

Bei ihren Um- und Neubauten beginnen Lacaton & Vassal ihre Pro­ jekte damit, den Bestand zu untersuchen und zu analysieren, was gut funktioniert und was fehlt. Mal ist das Vorhandene ein jahrhunderte­ alter Baumbestand eines Baugrundstücks, so wie die Kiefern beim Haus am Cap Ferret (1998), mal sind es die Bewohner, wie beim Umbau des Tour Bois le Prêtre, mal aber auch nur eine einfache Fläche in der Stadt, wie in Bordeaux. In der südwestfranzösischen Hafenmetropole sollten die Architekten 1996 den Place Leon Aucoc umgestalten – es war ihr allererster Auftrag. Bei ihrem Besuch vor Ort waren Anne Lacaton und Jean Philippe Vassal von dem mit Bäumen umsäumten, dreiecksförmi­ gen Platz so beeindruckt, dass sie kurzerhand entschieden, diesen nicht zu verändern, sondern das Projektbudget für eine Instandsetzung, die Säuberung der Bodenoberfläche sowie die zukünftige Pflege einzuset­ zen. »Es war und ist uns wichtig, das als Projekt zu begreifen.

Es ist keine Absage, sondern eine bewusste Entscheidung, an dieser Stelle nichts zu machen«¹,

erinnert sich Anne Lacaton. Der Platz war für die Architekten über die Jahre entsprechend der Bedürfnisse seiner Nutzer so gewachsen, dass sie ihn nie hätten besser gestalten können.

Es gibt wahrscheinlich kaum ein anderes Projekt, das das Selbst­ verständnis der Architekten so unterstreicht. Welch große Geste, den ersten Auftrag nicht als Chance der Selbstverwirklichung zu benut­ zen, sondern mit einer Entscheidung des Nicht-Eingreifens zu über­ raschen. Damit verdeutlichen die Architekten auf der einen Seite ihre Rolle als verantwortungsbewusste Gestalter, gleichzeitig stoßen sie ihren Auftraggeber, in diesem Fall die Stadt Bordeaux, vor den Kopf – schließlich wollte man einen neuen Platz und nicht das gleiche Bild wie schon Jahrzehnte zuvor haben. An diesem Punkt beginnt die Rolle des Architekten, der abwägen sollte, an welchen Stellen in einer Stadt etwas ›neu Gebautes‹ sinnvoll, wichtig und richtig ist und wo hinge­ gen das Bestehende erhalten bleiben soll.

Das Büro Lacaton & Vassal arbeitet ähnlich wie ein Gärtner, der einen Park pflegt und dabei so wenig wie möglich, aber so viel wie nötig in das Bestehende eingreift.

Er schneidet regelmäßig eine Hecke zurecht, jätet das Unkraut, damit es die gewünschten Pflanzen nicht stört, und ab und zu pflanzt er neue Blumen und Sträucher. Niemals, wirklich niemals würde er seinen Gar­ ten platt machen und von vorne anfangen – auf die Idee käme er gar nicht erst! In der Architektur ist es anders: Es liegt in der Natur des Architekten, dass er neue Bauten errichten will; den Abriss eines be­ stehenden Gebäudes wird er dabei kaum in Frage stellen, sondern als zwingende Notwendigkeit sehen. Ein freies Grundstück und eine feh­ lende Funktion sollen neu besetzt werden, das Gebäude einen Nutz­ wert erfüllen. Dieses radikale Tabula-Rasa-Prinzip hat sich so in der Architektur etabliert, dass es nur selten, nämlich dann, wenn es alte

Bauten mit besonderem Wert betrifft, überhaupt angezweifelt wird. Al­ les soll neu sein, mit einem Umbau gewinnt man keine große Anerken­ nung – höchstens eine Auszeichnung vom Landesdenkmalpflegeamt.

Ein Credo von Lacaton & Vassal hingegen lautet: »Never demolish, never remove or replace, always add, transform and reuse!«² Anne Lacaton und Jean Philippe Vassal hinterfragen ihre Rolle als Architekten stets; in jeder ihrer Arbeiten begegnen sie dem Bestand mit maximalem Respekt. »90 Prozent von einem Projekt sind bereits da, bevor man überhaupt anfängt zu bauen«, meint Jean Philippe Vassal. »Als Architekt setzt man sich mit dem Begriff des Bauens auseinander.

Das Bauen kann man auf eine sehr materielle und systematische Art sehen, weil man mit Ziegeln, mit Beton, mit Stahl und Fenstern baut.

In unserer Auffassung von Architektur bedeutet Bauen aber vor allem: nachdenken.«³ Schon bei dem Haus am Cap Ferret, einem der frühen Werke des Bü­ ros, kann man dieses Prinzip des maximalen Respekts beobachten: Auch hier sollte kein Baum gefällt werden; das Bestehende wurde ge­ pflegt und geschützt. »Wenn man die Situation mitten zwischen den Bäumen nicht spürt, wird man nicht verstehen, wie wichtig diese für das gesamte Haus sind«, erklärt Anne Lacaton. »Uns war von Anfang klar, dass wir keinen einzigen Baum fällen, nicht einen. Genauso wie in dem Tour Bois le Prêtre:

Die Bewohner sind wie Bäume im Wald – welches Recht habe ich als Architekt, dies zu verändern und zu entscheiden, was gut und was schlecht ist?«⁴ 4 - 5

In dem Wohnhaus am Cap Ferret hat dies zur Folge, dass einige der Baumstämme, die durch das Haus wachsen, den Grundriss stören und mal ein Baum vor der Tür zu dem Bad steht – ein bewusste Geste, die die Prioritäten der Architekten verdeutlicht.

Das Duo verfolgt in seinen Neu- und Umbauprojekten verschiedene Strategien mit dem Wunsch nach einer optimistischen Zukunft und nimmt damit eine neue Position in der zeitgenössischen Architektur ein: Für ein gutes Gebäude ist nicht die Form, sondern Atmosphäre, Klima und Komfort entscheidend. »To find the minimum to make the maximum«⁵ lautet ein Leitspruch von Anne Lacaton, 1955 in Saint Par­ doux la Rivière in der Dordogne geboren, und Jean Philippe Vassal, der 1954 in Casablanca geboren wurde und auch längere Zeit in Marokko und Nordafrika gelebt hat. Beide haben in Bordeaux studiert, wo sie sich an der Ecole d’Architecture kennenlernten; beide haben in Niamey ge­ arbeitet. Dass sie trotz schmaler Budgets Räume von opulenter Größe produzieren können, beweisen Projekte, wie der umgebaute Palais de Tokyo in Paris und die bewohnbaren Gewächshäuser mit den mar­ kanten Polykarbonat-Fassaden in Mulhouse oder der vor kurzem um­ gebaute Tour Bois le Prêtre, der als Schlüsselprojekt des Duos gilt und seit letztem Jahr für besonderes Aufsehen sorgt. Das Projekt ist Teil der Studie PLUS, die Lacaton & Vassal 2004 zusammen mit dem Architek­ ten Frédéric Druot begonnen haben und in der sie sich den modernen

Wohnsiedlungen, die in den 60er und 70er Jahren in der Peripherie von Paris gebaut wurden, widmen. Nun bezweifeln Lacaton, Vassal und Druot nicht, dass die Qualität der Architektur der Banlieue in den meisten Fällen kaum mehr als durchschnittlich gelten kann. Sie se­ hen darin aber gerade kein Abrissargument, sondern eine Herausfor­ derung für den Berufsstand der Architekten, diesen problematischen Bestand durch eine Art architektonisches Tuning wertsteigernd zu transformieren und die Moderne weiterzudenken. Wirft man einen Blick hinter die rosa, beige oder cremefarben gestrichenen HLM’s (So­ ziale Wohnbauten), findet man dieselbe Art von Skelettbauten, aus denen auch die Wohnhochhäuser in den noblen Pariser Quartieren ge­ baut sind – nur dass diese mit ihren filigranen Fassaden aus Stahl und Glas ein Bild von Luxus und Wohlstand verkörpern. Der Tour Bois le Pêtre dient nach seiner gelungenen Realisierung als konkreter Beweis

für die Behauptung, dass ein kluger Umbau günstiger sein kann als Ab­ riss und Neubau und ein besseres Ergebnis schafft. Grundlage für die Umgestaltung des sozialen Wohnungsbaus war dabei die Kooperation mit den Bewohnern – diese wohnten während der Bauphase weiterhin in dem Turm und waren an den Umbaumaßnahmen beteiligt. Für die Architekten bedeutete dieser Umstand einen gewaltigen Mehraufwand an Organisation und Kommunikation – für die Bewohner wurde das umgebaute Wohnhaus eine enorme Bereicherung: mehr Wohnraum und mehr Wohnqualität. »Ich denke, gerade ist es für Architekten sehr wichtig, über Wirtschaftlichkeit nachzudenken«, meint Anne Lacaton. »Wie produziere ich mehr für weniger? Mehr Raum zu generieren – viele Menschen leben in engsten Verhältnissen – ist aber keine Frage des Budgets! Wir müssen umdenken.« Bei den Projekten von Lacaton & Vassal ist es unter anderem auch ihre Unabgeschlossenheit, die jegliches Nutzungs- sowie Umnutzungskonzept erlaubt. So wie bei der Architekturschule in Nantes, die ähnlich wie ein Parkhaus über eine breite Rampe erschlossen wird. Die einzelnen Unterrichtsräume und Ateliers sind als beheizbare Einbauten in die Tragstruktur einge­ schoben, während der übergroße Erschließungsraum als zusätzlicher Handlungsraum von den Architekturstudenten genutzt werden kann.

Es ist nicht leicht, die Architektur von Lacaton & Vassal in eine bestimmte Kategorie einzuordnen – der rote Faden in ihren Arbeiten lässt sich kaum in einem Wort zusammenfassen. Doch wenn man das eingangs genannte Biennale-Thema aufgreift, Less Aesthetics – more ethics, dann lässt sich ihr Werk vielleicht mit ›More Ethics: More Ae­ sthetics‹ betiteln.

Der sensible sowie respektvolle Umgang mit dem Vorhandenen und ihre verantwortungsvolle Haltung gegenüber den Nutzern spiegeln sich auch in der Arbeitsweise der Architekten wider. Lacaton & Vas­ sal entwickeln ihre Projekte immer von innen nach außen. Sie fertigen kaum Skizzen oder Zeichnungen an und arbeiten nie mit Modellen, da sie den Blick von oben in eine Gebäudeminiatur verfremdend finden.

Vielmehr stellen sie sich der direkten Realität, am liebsten eben im Maßstab 1:1. Modelle von ihren Projekten, denen man in Ausstellun­ gen begegnet, wurden nachträglich angefertigt und dienen als Medium der Dokumentation, nicht zur Erläuterung und Verkauf einer Ent­ wurfsidee. Anne Lacaton und Jean Philippe Vassal verkörpern damit das totale Gegenstück zum klassischen Bild des Architekten, der am Reißbrett Häuser entwirft, und setzen eine neue optimistische Posi­ tion für das zeitgenössische Bauen. Im nächsten Jahr feiert ihr gemein­ sames Büro 20-jähriges Jubiläum. Es war 1984, als Anne Lacaton und Jean Philippe Vassal ihr erstes gemeinsames Haus gebaut haben: eine Strohhütte in der Wüste von Niamey. Sechs Monate lang haben die beiden Architekten nach einer geeigneten Sanddüne für die Hütte gesucht; in nur zwei Tagen haben sie diese dann gebaut. Das Stroh­ haus stand zwei Jahre lang in der Wüste am Niger bevor es vom Wind zerstört wurde.

Bei allen Ansprüchen und Forderungen die an die Architektur heran­ getragen werden, ein gewisser Konsens wird wohl darüber herrschen: Eine – wenn nicht die – Kernkompetenz der Architektur ist die Ge­ staltung und der Umgang mit Raum.

Um sich dem Charakter der heutigen Architekturpraxis zu nähern, hilft es sich genauer damit zu beschäftigen, worüber wir eigentlich reden, wenn wir heute über Raum sprechen. Sofern wir dem folgen und den Raum als das sich im Zentrum des Interesses der Architektur Be­ findende, anerkennen, so wird mit einer klaren Charakterisierung des Begriffes sogleich deutlich, worum es bei der Arbeit der Architekten eigentlich geht.

So lässt sich die Situation, in der sich die Architektur heute wie­ derfindet, am prägnantesten mit Henri Lefèbvre beschreiben. Raum wird bei Lefèbvre nicht als etwas vorgängig Vorhandenes beschrieben, sondern als Produziertes. Dieser, in jeder Sekunde wieder neu durch die raumproduziereden Akteure erzeugte Raum, lässt sich – nach Le­ fèbvre – über drei Ebenen beschreiben, die jeweils untereinander eng miteinander verwoben und gegenseitig voneinander abhängig sind.

Zum einen ist das der Aspekt der räumlichen Praxis (pratique spatiale), der wahrgenommene, bzw. der erfahrene Raum (perceived space).¹ Zum anderen sind dies die Raumrepräsentation (conceived space – bei Günzel übersetzt mit Raumkonzeptionen). » Dieser Aspekt des Raumes ist gekennzeichnet durch abstrakte ­Kon­zeptionen und Darstellungen von Raum. Er ist der Raum der Wissen­-

schaften, Theorien, Planungen und vorherrschenden Diskurse über Raum und wird durch diese hergestellt. Die Repräsentation des Raumes ordnet den gesellschaftlichen und physischen Raum dem gedanklichen Raum unter. « ² Der dritte Aspekt beleuchtet die Repräsentationsräume (espaces de représentation). » Sie sind Räume des Ausdrucks, gelebter Raum (lived space), nicht erdachter Raum. Ihre Bedeutungen werden durch den Gebrauch hergestellt. Es ist dieser Aspekt des Raumes, der vorherrschende Ordnungen und Diskurse unterlaufen und dadurch andere Räume imaginieren kann.

Räume der Repräsentation sind die Räume möglichen Widerstands und möglicher Kämpfe der Aneignung und bergen eine starke Motivation zu utopischen Veränderungen. « ³

Zieht man diese Raumkonzeption von Lefèbvre he­ ran, vor dem Hintergrund seiner in Die Revolution der Städte for­ mulierten Hypothese, dass die Raumproduktion der Moderne von der zweiten Raumkategorie dominiert war – die letztlich die Pro­ duktion eines abstrakten und homogenen Raumes befördert – sich die Produktionsverhältnisse jedoch zunehmend wandeln in Rich­ tung der Produktion eines › differentiellen Raumes ‹, so ergeben sich daraus auch zwingend einige Implikationen für die Praxis der Archi­ tektur, dem Berufsbild des Architekten. »Im abstrakten Raum dominiert der Aspekt der Repräsentation des Raumes, dieser verwirklicht vor allem die Anforderungen und Normen kapitalistischer Produktionsweise. Sein vorherrschender Diskurs ist der einer marktgerechten Verwertbarkeit von Raum, seiner Quantifizierbarkeit und bürokratischen Verwaltung. Die Repräsentation des Raumes legitimiert und stützt so die Funktionsweise von Kapital und Staat. Der abstrakte Raum tendiert zur Reduktion und Homogenisierung gesellschaftlichen Raumes. « ⁴ Besonders auch im Feld der Architektur hat diese industrielle Ten­ denz, so könnte man sagen, auf breiter Front Spuren hinterlassen und sich durchgesetzt. Sämtliche Tätigkeiten in unserer Profession wur­ den formalisiert und normativ verfasst in Regelwerken wie dem Neu­ fert oder etwa der HOAI. » Abstrakter Raum ist jedoch nicht das ausschließliche Ergebnis einer Ideologie oder naturalisierender Diskurse, sondern wird hergestellt mittels räumlicher Praxis. Diese (...) hat die Existenz eines gesellschaftlichen Konsenses zur Voraussetzung, der die Konventionen des erwarteten Gebrauchs von Räumen vorgibt. Räumliche Praxis bestätigt und reproduziert genau diese Konventionen. Sie ist vor allem durch das Schweigen der Benutzer gekennzeichnet, durch die Abwesenheit der Räume der Repräsentation. Nach Lefèbvre wäre das der gelebte Raum, der Raum möglicher Widerständigkeit und der Entwicklung alternativer Räume. « ⁵ Und – hier möchte man noch anmerken und auf weiter oben verweisen: die Räume einer möglichen, auch utopischen Imagination.

Anders formuliert: Hier, im gelebten Raum, liegt das Potential der

Architektur. Ihr Potential andere Räume zu entwerfen, zu imaginie­ ren, zu produzieren. Folgt man Lefèbvre und seiner Hypothese der Verstädterung, die damit einhergeht, dass der differentielle Raum zu­nehmend an Bedeutung gewinnt – mit seiner Unvorhersehbarkeit, mit seinen Zufälligkeiten und seiner durch höchst individualisierte Raumproduktion erzeugten, großen Heterogenität statt Homogeni­ tät – dann bedeutet dies, dass die Architekten zunehmend wieder den ­reduzierten, abstrahierenden Rationalraum verlassen müssen und sich hinein ins Leben begeben müssen. geöffnet hinter all den allzu hermetisch geratenen Welterklärungsund Verbesserungsmodellen der Moderne. Hier zeigt sich: Was sich vermeintlich als Aufweichung und Ausfransen unserer Profession an ihren Rändern zeigt, ist letztlich ihr Ausbruch aus dem engen Korsett übermäßiger Formalisierungen und ein Wiederzuwenden zum Kern der Sache, den eigentlichen Gegenständen der Beschäftigung, die sich im Feld des Gesellschaftlichen finden.

Es bedurfte dabei bisher gar keinem pathetischem Manifest, auch keinem Husserl’schen Aufruf » Zu den Sachen selbst! « ⁶. Dieser Aus­ bruch aus dem allzu kanalisierten Flussbett des Rationalraumes heißt nicht, dass dieser aufgegeben wird. Es bedeutet lediglich, dass die Durchlässigkeit zwischen den drei Raumebenen, der engen Aufein­ anderbezogenheit wieder mehr Rechnung getragen wird und werden muss. – So zeigt sich die Flucht aus dem klassischen Berufsbild des Ar­ chitekten vielleicht zunächst einmal als Flucht vor der Arbeitslosigkeit, oder zumindest prekären Arbeitsverhältnissen. Doch dies zeigt ­allein nicht einen Niedergang der Architektur an, sondern lediglich den Nie­ dergang der Dominanz der absoluten Räume der Repräsentation.

Ein zeitgenössischer Modus Operandi der Architektur.

Hier wird also letztlich nur nachvollzogen, was sich am Ende aus der Entwicklung hin zu einem differentiellen Raum an logischen Konse­ quenzen ergeben: So wie die Architektur insbesondere in der Moderne und bis heute konzeptionalisiert wurde, ist sie mit dem › Thirdspace ‹ (Edward Soja) nicht in Deckung zu bringen. Das war sie nie, jedoch wurde dies lange nicht in dieser Tragweite gesehen. So wie Architek­ tur beispielsweise noch als Tätigkeit in der HOAI konzeptionalisiert ist, aber auch in den immer noch präsenten › grands recits ‹, die von den heroischen Architekten der Moderne handeln und die in unserer Pro­ fession augenscheinlich noch immer offen oder verdeckt verehrt nach­ geeifert werden, so ist in diesen Modellen keine ausreichende Basis für ein Lösen der Probleme, wie sie sich der Architektur stellen, gegeben.

tionsmodell, welches unhinterfragt eine gestellte Aufgabe linear den Zeitstrahl entlang, teleologisch abhandeln und » lösen « soll.

So wie dies beispielsweise Bruno Latour mit der Actor-NetworkTheorie versucht, erfordert der Produktionsmodus des › differentiellen Raumes ‹ , dass der Blick nicht nur darauf gelenkt wird, wie die Dinge konzeptionalisiert werden, sondern auch darauf, wie sie gebraucht werden und damit einhergehend die Beziehung zwischen Konzeption, Funktion und Gebrauch. Diese Beziehungen sind höchst performativ und komplex in ihren Auswirkungen und schwierig zu gestalten. Hier wird auch deutlich, dass es nicht um eine Abkehr von Konzeptionali­ sierungen gehen kann, um eine Abkehr von Theorie und ein buchstäb­ liches Abtauchen in die Praxis. Im Gegenteil: Architektur als Praxis des Handelns im und des Erhandelns von Raum, muss sich so zwangs­ läufig zu den kulturellen, politischen und ökonomischen Dimensionen ihres Tuns bewusst positionieren.

So wie sich etwa auch die Theaterwissenschaften bereits länger von den alleinigen Diskursen über die Konzeptionalisierung eines Stückes in Plänen, Büchern, Skripten gelöst haben ⁷, hin zu einer Betrachtung in der die Aufführung als solche im Zentrum steht, vollzieht nun auch die Architektur notwendigerweise eine ähnliche Entwicklung. Ian Borden beschreibt beispielsweise in Skateboarding, Space and the City: Architecture and the Body ⁸, wie etwa ein Treppengeländer funktional im Raum der Repräsentation ziemlich eindeutig bestimmt, doch im Gebrauch etwa als › R ail ‹ beim Skate­ boarden völlig anderes angeeignet wird als im Plan intendiert. Ein­ her geht eine Abkehr vom industriellen Produktionsmodus hin zum Eintauchen und Eingreifen, dem Teilwerden von performativen – wechselwirkend sich ereignenden – Prozessen. Im Unterschied zum industriellen Arbeitsmodus – etwa » Bauen sie ein Auto! « – sind hier meistens Aufgabe – der Sinn – und Ziel beim Einstieg in den Prozess

der Planung nicht klar und müssen erst mit den raumproduzieren­ den Akteuren im konstellativen, nicht linearen, diagrammatischen Arbeiten ermittelt werden.

Was wird zur Steuerung und Gestaltung solch komplexer, performa­ tiver Prozesse gebraucht? Entwurfskompetenz. Die Kompetenz des › Strategischen Entwerfens ‹ . Der Experte für technische Details wird nach wie vor gebraucht und ist unverzichtbar.

Doch in einer durch-normierten Bauwelt mit industriellen Produkten, letzt­ lich Readymades, die weitgehend nur neu kombiniert oder leicht variiert und modifiziert werden, ist derjenige, der nur auf diesem Feld des Adaptierens kompetent ist, austauschbar.

Die Bauwerke-Produktion im engeren Sinne folgt mittlerweile in allen Bereichen einem klassischen industriellen Produktionsmodell, in dem für den Architekten, verstanden als › Strategischem Entwer­ fer ‹, nicht mehr allzu viel zu tun bleibt. So ist es nur folgerichtig, dass Tätigkeiten, die im engeren Sinne mit diesem industriellen Produk­ tionsprozess befasst sind, mehrheitlich zur Industrie abwandern, wo sie auch über Skaleneffekte der Massenproduktion entsprechend getragen werden, und sich entsprechend weniger im klassischen Architekturbüro-­Format finden lassen.

Die Produktion von Raum, jenseits einer verengten Definition der Bauwerke-Produktion, ist dagegen jedoch – mehr denn je – voll von dringlich anzugehenden Herausforderungen, von › ill-defined-prob­ lems ‹ , die nicht mit einer industriellen Logik begegnet, sowie durch De­ duktion, Abduktion und Induktion bewältigt werden können, sondern nur durch › strategisches Entwerfen ‹ . Ein solch verstandenes Entwer­ fen verlässt seine Zitadelle der Raumrepräsentationen und konzepti­ onalisiert nicht in hermetischen Modellen, sondern bildet Metaformen ⁹, bei denen die Beziehungen zwischen Konzeption, Funktion und Ge­ brauch stets hinterfragt werden und aktualisiert werden. Eine solche architektonische Praxis stellt sich, durch das sich Hineinbegeben in den › Thirdspace ‹ , dem durch und durch performativen Charakter von Architektur. Solch eine Praxis zielt auf die Steuerung und Strukturie­ rung von Prozessen in Hinblick auf ein sinnvolles Ziel ab. Was ist zuerst zu tun, was danach ... was ist wichtig im Sinne eines Konzeptes, was weniger und ein solch verstandenes Entwerfen fragt auch immer nach dem, wie es Gerhard Polt formulieren würde: » Braucht’s des? « ¹⁰ Was ist verzichtbar? Hierbei können nur aus dem Feld des gesellschaftli­ chen Kontextes heraus performativ Konstellationen für das Vorgehen und das Handeln entwickelt werden.

These inspiring talks layed the foundations of the 7th issue of Horizonte – journal for architectural discourse.

Horizonte’s 41st lecture series, entitled More than architecture gave a broad insight into the opportunities open for architects beyond the traditional realm in which the profession operates. In this lecture series we invited architects and others from the periphery of the profession, who affect the field. Lecturers from a variety of disciplines: urban intervention, cultural mediating , teaching and architecture, came to share their experiences. The overview provided by our guests revealed the diversity of an architect’s possibilities to create, influence and to seek new fields of self -expression. Our guests also shed some light on professional practice: how can one interpret one’s profession as an architect and how does that affect how practice is executed? A broad spectrum of thoughts and projetcs showed us the complexity and developments around the current making of architecture.

The fiction that architects write – as an inspiration for and a response to culture – forecasts the fabrication of cities, which marks history. « Die Grafiknovelle Citizens of No Place ist eine Sammlung aus zehn Kurzgeschichten, die als eine Mischung aus DC Comics der 1950 er Jahre und fotografischen Collagen nach Vorlage von Rem Koolhaas anmuten. In Tradition von Paper Architecture verdeutlichen die Figuren, welcher kritische Denkprozess dem Akt des Entwerfens zugrunde liegt. Lai sieht in der imaginären Welt die Möglichkeit, komplexe Zusammenhänge konzentriert zu vermitteln. Exemplarisch hierfür wird in der Geschichte On Types of Seductive Robustness ein Mann verhaftet, weil er mit einer architektonischen, abstrakten Form Geschlechtsverkehr hatte und damit den Verhaltenskodex verletzte. Als er das Vergehen damit begründet, die Verführung durch die Form habe sein objektives Urteilsvermögen gestört, wird er begnadigt und die Figur in das gesellschaftlich anerkannte Archiv des Zeitgeistes aufgenommen.

Wer sich in Citizens of No Place vertieft, erlebt das, was der Architektur trotz ihrer Vielseitigkeit oft fehlt: Fantasie und Humor. Mit ihr können, ob gezeichnet oder gebaut, schöne und absurde Geschichten erzählt werden.

Vor allem als Denkmalarchitekt im Jugoslawien der 1950er bis 1980er Jahre tätig, produzierte er parallel zur Praxis und zur Lehre an der Universität Belgrad ein umfassendes literarisches Werk. Viele seiner Schriften beschäftigen sich mit dem Thema Stadt. Vom Surrealismus und der Romantik geprägt steuert er der Entfremdung des Individuums entgegen und hebt den persönlichen Zugang jedes Einzelnen zur Stadt in den Vordergrund. Damit positionierte er sich oftmals im Zwiespalt zur herrschenden, städtebaulichen Praxis im damaligen Jugoslawien. Neben den Veröffentlichungen zur Stadt finden sich Werke, die er selbst der › urbanologischen Fantastik ‹ zuordnet und die derart einen Bogen schlagen zu seiner ornament- und symbolreichen Denkmalarchitektur. Nach seiner Zeit als Belgrader Bürgermeister Mitte der 1980er Jahre und nach der offenen Konfrontation mit Milošević setzt Bogdanović sein literarisches Schaffen im Wiener Exil fort und wird dadurch auch im deutschsprachigen Raum bekannt. Vladimir Vuković liefert nun mit seinem 2008 erschienen Buch einen Überblick über das literarische Werk Bogdanovićs und vermittelt erstmals die nur im Serbischen erschienen Texte dem deutschsprachigen Leser.

Bernhard König studierte Architektur und Stadtplanung in Weimar, Oxford und Zürich. Er arbeitete u.a. mit Herzog & de Meuron in Basel und dem Büro für Urbane Projekte in Leipzig. Derzeit führt er ein eigenes Projektbüro für Landschafts­architektur, Beteiligungs und Medienprojekte.

Von 2009 –2010 war er wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Stiftung Bauhaus Dessau für die IBA Stadtumbau 2010. Seit 2010 ist er verantwortlich für Forschung und Projekte am Institut für Architektur und Landschaft der TU Graz.

Cristobal Gonzalez graduated from the Instituto Tecnologico de Tijuana ( ITT ) in Mexico and holds a Master in Archi­tectural Management and Design from the Institute de Empresas in Madrid and the Royal College of Arts in London. His interest lies in the fields of design research and development, digital environments, urban / land-art and alternative ways of creating space by experimenting with different materials and construction methods.

Gonzales has worked as a designer /ar­ chitect in Mexico, USA , China and Russia collaborating with local architects and artists in different projects.

He is the co-founder of › x g e n - design ‹.

Gerard Reinmuth is one of the Directors of Terroir, an architectural practice which emerged from conversations around the potential for architecture to open up questions of cultural consequence. Research and practice on these questions led to his appointment as Professor in Practice at the University of Technology (UTS ) Sydney from 2011.

perform a surgery (for example); or not everybody wants to take care of kids that aren’t their own everyday for a living and teach them profane knowledge (we all have learn from experience that knowledge and history are vague); and last but not least not everybody posses the artistic gift of cooking and delight millions of people with their exquisite prepared plates (because in today’s world cooking is the only ›art‹ that matters).

Architects became a ›trigger‹, a blaming body, a Guinea-pig of politicians, mafias and big corporations desperate for getting richer slaving weakminds. Architects were statistically probe to suffer from weakness because their high levels of stress and bi-polar sense, not knowing if they are architects or builders, designers or engineers, businessman or artists, etc.

Why Architects never learned to emulate software developers, programmers and the computer industry that master themselves from their own mistakes and every product was better than the previous one.

– Maybe the problem is here, in my last sentence! The thing is that Architects rarely saw their work as a product, they even denied this posture.

But regardless of these symptoms, exist a small elite of distinguished exArchitects that have managed to keep the profession alive at least in the sense of: ›first design - then build‹ the (no)space, without theories nor conceptual ideas. Not only have they changed the modus operandi but the name as well. They have been baptized with the name of ›Areformators‹, where the (a) stands not for architecture but for ambient (meaning: space, location, surroundings, place and background), and reformator⁴ refers to the action of needing to format anew or again, generally erasing a previous format (which in this case is again: the space, location, surroundings, place, background or building).

Since the client-relation is based in a realtime digitized machine code, there is nothing for Areformator to design other than creating new ways to communicate faster and more efficient in realtime mode, and since the main goal of their work is to maintain the relation by translating the code, breaking or decoding it into systematic parts, selling these at auctions to the higher bidder; or omit this last step and instead input back the fragments to the code in a series of solved clouds (higher mathematical equations) that will produce the habitable bodies where people can de-interact.

Not sure for how long this will continue to function this way since things are getting easier and easier this days only having four main languages (English, Spanish, Mandarin and the more used: programming language).

We are living in a system with a single structure but with millions of branches that makes it easier to grasp-on because the variety and clarity of the whole mass of particles that conform the cloud.
