Weekly Service: Sundays 10:30 AM

Future Sundays: July 20, 2014 Future Story: The Craft of Nurturing Hope with Memory, Imagination and Anticipation - David Martin This sermon will be based on the work of theologian, Andy Lester who developed a theology of hope centered around the idea that for human beings, hope is derived from our ability to envision and begin living into some sense of future.

The work of ministry and of any community of faith is to nurture hope and consequently, confront despair by crafting new stories from the old using the tools of memory, imagination and anticipation.

Update on Horizon’s Grounds This year the congregation generously increased the budget amount for the maintenance and upkeep of our grounds. On behalf of those who have been maintaining the grounds: a big thank you! David Winters, of Executive Lawn and Garden, is now mowing and maintaining the Horizon grounds. He will weed the flower beds and labyrinth, clean the walks, resolve most irrigation problems, prune trees and mow the grounds etc. However, the budget is not enough for our grounds to look manicured every week. Some work by us, the congregation, will still be required. We will have seasonal work days to spread mulch, weed and plant. As our summer heats up, you may notice the grass is being mowed higher. There is an excellent reason for this: longer blades of grass have more photosynthesis and thus produce more sugar. More sugar means longer roots. Longer roots mean the grass can reach deeper for water and maintain its health and withstand drought more easily. You might want to try this at home as well – the results are surprisingly good! If you see David around the grounds, please say Hello. TREE WATERERS NEEDED Most of the grounds committee is out of town in August. There are five new trees which need more frequent deep watering than our sprinkler system. If you are willing to water every August Sunday, please contact Mary Morris at mmorris143@ Verizon.net. Thank you. Mary Morris, Grounds Committee

LAY MINISTRY NEWS by Marianna Seaton dlm@horizonuu.org Director of Lay Ministry

On the Road Please join me in lifting up, and giving thanks to Lucy Lockwood. Lucy has been a member of Horizon since 1990 and has served in many leadership roles. Lucy graciously serves with our Sunday Greeters Program, with Membership, and the Calling Circle. Without fanfare, there are many small and large things that Lucy does to make Horizon more welcoming and hospitable, and many people have benefited from her kind service. Recently, Lucy was spared injury in a car accident. We are all relieved that she is well, and that her car took the brunt of the impact. She is equipped with a new car, and is intentionally curtailing her driving to safer times. Lucy is retiring as one of Horizon’s most called upon chauffeurs. Several other champions at horizon offer transportation to new friends and established members in need, and this simple act has opened vessels of love and friendship. Sometimes it’s a ride to church, other times it’s being someone’s companion to a doctor’s office or hospital. A long time Unitarian Universalist from New Mexico recently moved to the Lewisville area, and three of Horizon’s members, Mackedie Spiker, Eddie Meaders, and Daniel Crane, have organized a care calendar to help get her to church on Sundays. It is just one of the ways that we try to be welcoming at Horizon, and I feel very grateful to be a part of this community. If you have room in your car, time to take to the road, and a willingness to offer a helping hand, please contact me at dlm@horizonuu.org. You can also find information for care calendar sign-up on the Lay Ministry Bulletin board at church.

Horizon Members fill a Pickup Truck with Donations for Central American Refugees Thanks to all at Horizon who donated toiletry items, cash, and gift cards to the teen’s charity drive last Sunday. The youth filled a pickup bed with boxes full of donations destined for the Catholic Charities of Fort Worth which is directing the distribution of items for the incoming Central American refugees. A special thank you goes out to Frank Vaughan for organizing the drive and the Horizon youth for putting Frank’s plan into action. It was truly a denominational effort - Pathways UU Church in Euless also sent donations.
