Future Sundays: June 29, 2014 The Dance of the Unconscious Reflex Rev. Rob Moore For the first time in over 27 years, Horizon will be without professional ministry (if only for a little while). Given that our Senior Minister has moved into retirement and our Intern Minister has graduated and completed her term with us, there might be more than a little bit of change, anxiety and grief coming our way in the coming days, weeks, months and years. When that change, anxiety and grief enters our life, both personally and collectively, we often fall into a dance of familiar and safe habits or ways of being (often without our being aware of it) that may be needed for a while but often bring their own challenges down the road. Come join us as we explore this dance and learn how to recognize and welcome a new dance to carry Horizon forward into its future.

PASTORAL CARE NEWS by Marianna Seaton dlm@horizonuu.org Director of Lay Ministry

Please join me in welcoming Campbell Paige Trainor-Weber, who was born June 26, weighing in at 7lbs 4oz. Kendra and Jonathan are the happy parents of this sweet baby. We would like to offer our sincere condolences to John Bryant and his family. Janet Montgomery Bryant, John’s mother, passed away in her sleep on June 16th. The family held a private service in her honor. John Gill and MC Meador are recovering well at home after their surgeries. Their spirits are high and these setbacks won’t keep them down for long. We wish them both well.

We offer positive wishes and good outcomes to Betsy Webb and Wendy Sue who are preparing for surgeries in the coming weeks. Feel free to send a note or greeting card to our friends; there’s nothing like it to brighten their day. Our best wishes to our graduating seniors, and everyone off on special adventures this summer. I hope you carry a little of Horizon with you on your journeys.

Our Pastoral Caregivers work with Ministers and Chaplains, the Director of Lay Ministry and the Neighborhood Groups in a spirit of cooperation to cherish and care for the members of our congregation. If you or your loved ones are in need of a sympathetic ear, the Pastoral Caregivers are available. Call Marianna Seaton, Director of Lay Ministry at 972-743-1599 or e-mail dlm@horizonuu.org.

NEW CLASSES by JuLane julane@judithlane.com

What We Choose:

Ethics for Unitarian Universalists An Adult Religious Education Class Where does moral authority lie? What is the basis for UU religious ethics? Is there such a thing as absolute and unchanging moral truth? What does it mean to live a life of virtue, to develop a virtuous character? How do we respond when we personally fall short of virtues we hold dear? Do human beings have inherent basic rights we are called to uphold? What do we do when our rights-based morality brings us face to face with rights that are in conflict? How do our relationships with others form a fundamental influence in our ethical decision making?

Page 13

NEW CLASSES Join us as we explore these and other moral and ethical questions that arise in your daily living. The 8 sessions of What We Choose offer an intentional process of engagement with other seekers in examining ethical concepts, questions and dilemmas. The material covered is designed to deepen and expand knowledge and skills for a process of ethical reflection that is central to living our Unitarian Universalist faith. This class offers the opportunity to examine the core of our lives as Unitarian Universalists and the sessions build on each other so we ask that you commit to attending all 8 sessions beginning Monday, August 4th and continuing to September 29th, with no class being held on Labor Day, September 1st. All materials will be provided with the exception of your personal journal; a 1-inch 3-ring binder would allow space for journal pages as well as insertion of the handouts that will provide your reading assignments and prepara-

tion for each class. The co-leaders are Peter Hendee and JuLane and we welcome any questions about the class. Please sign up at the Welcome Center in the lobby, or you can email JuLane at julane@judithlane.com. The class is limited to 12 participants. Childcare will be provided for children under 12 by emailing Ms Becky at childcare@horizonuu.org at least 48 hours before the session for which childcare is needed. She will need to know the ages of each child and about any special concerns. Cancellation of arranged childcare must be emailed to Ms. Becky no less than 24 hours before the session.

JUNE SELECTION HORIZON BOOK GROUP Shortlisted for the 2013 Man Booker Prize; Fiction Finalist, 2013 National Book Award

From an interview following the National Book Award nomination: Edan Lapucki: “ When I think of your work, I think of your precise, measured and graceful prose, as well as your attention to the everyday and inner lives of your characters. You’re basically the Queen of Realism. (You can’t deny it—there’s a crown on your head!) Do you think of yourself as working in a realist tradition? If so, can you discuss? If not, what tradition—if any—do you see yourself participating in?” Jhumpa Lahiri: “Everyday life and ordinary characters interest me. I believe that the mystery of life lies there. Many of the writers who have guided me over the years—Joyce, Chekhov, Cather, Hardy—depict the world in a way that feels transcendent. On the other hand, writers like Kafka or Borges render surreal situations in ways that are intensely realistic. The thing to remember is that, as three-dimensional as characters may seem, they are made of words, not flesh and blood. In the end all fiction is a dream.” http://www.nationalbook.org/nba2013_f_lahiri_interv.html Why not join the discussion at noon on Tuesday, June 24, in the Horizon library? You are welcome even if you haven’t read the book. Bring a sack lunch, something to drink, and your thoughts and impressions of this highly praised book. (The author’s first book, Interpreter of Maladies, a collection of stories, won the Pulitzer for fiction in 2000.)

Joseph Priestly, much more than a scientist and theologian! As a generalist and radical thinker, Joseph Priestly and his philosophy influenced scientific studies, theological developments, and political developments. His actual impact was much broader than the historical footnote he usually granted. What can we learn from his example?
