Horizon News Welcome, Lisa!
The Interim Minister’s Transition Team is made up of members appointed by the board who are well acquainted with Horizon’s history. Our role is to provide Rev. Helen with organizational support and insight, and to encourage the congregation to participate in the interim process. It’s an exciting time for Horizon! Your Transition Team is co-chaired by JuLane and Patsy Roe. Other members are Acie Nobles, Madira McKee, MC Meador and Beth Bargar.
Please welcome our temporary Congregational Administrator Lisa Krishnan! Lisa will be running the church office while we search for a permanent replacement. She brings extensive experience working in office environments and call centers.

EXPLORING HORIZON CLASS
Come “Explore Horizon” with Us! For those who are visiting and want to know more about Unitarian Universalism and Horizon, or for members who want to learn more about how Horizon works, an upcoming class will provide excellent information. And, if you are considering becoming a member, the “Exploring Horizon” class is highly recommended—here, you can ask all your questions! On Sunday, August 24th, after the Sunday service, Director of Lay Ministry Marianna Seaton, and Membership Co-Chair Sandy Steele will lead “Exploring Horizon” from 12:30-3:30. A light lunch will be served. Class will be held in the church library and free childcare will be provided if requested at childcare@horizonuu.org at least one week in advance. Learn about the Seven Principles that we as Unitarian Universalists strive to integrate into our lives. Hear about the history and the future of Horizon, how our members participate in the life of the church and what activities and offerings are available to deepen your spiritual growth. Find out how our church’s finances work and what you can expect if you choose to become a member. Meet other Horizon members and new friends during the class. You can enroll in the Exploring Horizon classes by sending an email to membership@horizonuu.org. Or, look for a sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center in the church lobby. Resources to talk to Children and Teens after a Traumatic Event This week’s tragic events have left all of us with a myriad of uneasy feelings; sadness, confusion, fear, and possibly anger among them. If you are a parent of an elementary-aged child or a teen, you also have probably had the additional challenge of talking with your child about the recent tragedy. In advance of the meeting at 6pm this Sunday in the sanctuary, there are some documents that can be downloaded from the DLRE blog (address found above) to help parents have these conversations at home. Additionally, some of the information addresses the long-term effects of trauma and what reactions and behaviors parents can expect in the weeks and months ahead. My heart goes out to all our Horizon families at this difficult time. I hope to see all our families and affected individuals on Sunday night and to assure you that Horizon’s commitment to the emotional health of our children and teens has only just begun. Sunday Classes for Children and Teens August 17th Preschool-rising Kindergartners: Fabulous Friends The class will listen to the book “Owen and Mzee” which tells the story of an unusual animal friendship. The children will play games and do activities to get to widen their circle of friendship. Rising Grades 1-4: Our Cosmic Origins
In the OUUr Story class, the elementary students will hear a lyrical tale about the beginning of the universe called, “The Everything Seed.” They will then create Big Bang designs out of swirling ink in water. Rising Grades 5-8: What’s your totem? Our middle school group will be exploring the spiritual practice of totems. They will answer questions such as What represents you and your soul? and create a personal totem in class. High School: The high school students will begin in the service at 10:30 to receive loving support from the congregation and then leave to have a special session with the minister and their teachers.

Horizon Women, Come Celebrate! It’s the 26th Annual Women’s Retreat! Sept. 26 – 28, 2014 Glen Lake Retreat Center - Glen Rose, TX
Theme: “Traveling Light” Join us at Glen Lake Retreat Center for our annual gathering. Horizon’s women members and visitors 21 and over are invited to let go of baggage and learn how to travel light! Come, enjoy, and remind yourself how to play! Glen Lake Retreat is located outside of the small historic town of Glen Rose and about 95 miles SW of Horizon. It is located on the beautiful Paluxy River, which is great for wading (when we’ve had rain)! There also is a hiking trail and a full gymnasium on the property. For information about the retreat center, go to http://www.glenlake.org. We will stay in three deluxe cabins, which accommodate 18 people very comfortably. Each cabin has a large, lighted vanity area and a bathroom with three showers, sinks, and toilets. There also are a limited number of hotel-style rooms, available first-come, first-serve at a higher cost (Two people/room, $40 more per person. Arrangements can be made for off-site hotel rooms as well.) Friday check-in begins at 4 p.m., and Sunday check-out is at noon; carpooling will be organized. REGISTRATION will begin Sun. Aug. 3 and must be received by AUGUST 31st. This is a FIRM DATE!! Cost is $115 per person; there are a limited number of spaces available, so don’t delay. Please note that All Hotel-Style rooms are now full. Unfortunately, no reservations can be accepted after Aug. 31 since we MUST provide the total number to the retreat center on Sept. 1. (Some material for the retreat will be taken from the book Soul Coaching by Denise Linn. You are welcome, but certainly not required, to read or purchase the book.) CURIOUS ABOUT SCHEDULE? You can check the calendar at http://calendar.horizonuu.org/ Horizon Book Group: 4th Tuesdays 12p. (bookclub@horizonuu.org) The Horizon Book Group meets at 12 Noon on the fourth Tuesday of each month in the church Library. Every June and November the group decides on the books for the following six months. Bring a brown bag lunch and join in this fun group that is open to women and men. You’ll be able to share in an invigorating conversation on the session’s book. Current selections are found in the Library information niche in the lobby/narthex. For more info, you may contact bookclub@horizonuu.org. Buddhist Sangha: Tuesdays 7 PM 9:00 PM. (buddhists@horizonuu.org ) Buddhist Sangha ("Sangha" is equivalent to a covenant group) is a weekly gathering that studies the Dharma (the teachings of Buddhism.) This is an ongoing exploration of the Four Noble Truths and the Eight Fold Path, the essential teachings of Buddhism. It is participatory and although consistency is encouraged, sessions can be attended on a drop in basis. We welcome anyone interested in a meditation practice. SPECIAL GROUPS The UU Christian Chalice Circle (uuchristians@horizonuu.org ) The UU Christian Chalice Circle provides a forum for enriching our spiritual lives through personal discovery of the heart, meaning, and tradition of Christianity. We gather monthly on the 1st Sunday at 9AM in the library for discussion, fellowship, and exploration. All those seeking to connect (or re-connect) to the beauty and wisdom of Christianity are welcome to attend. uuchristians@horizonuu.org. The CineMat Group (cinemat@horizonuu.org ) The CineMat group will be meeting on the 4th Saturday every month. And it’s now a Chalice Circle!. This Chalice Circle gets together to see a movie and then goes to a coffee shop or restaurant to discuss and comment on it in a friendly circle over a cup of coffee or drink. Starts at 8AM The 2nd Tuesday Potluck Chalice Circle (secondtuesday@horizonuu.org ) This group meets for food, fellowship, and deepening friendships. They meet in the library 2nd Tuesday of most months at 12 noon. Occasionally we take a field trip instead of having a potluck lunch. Tuesday Wisdom Circle (tuesdaywisdom@horizonuu.org ) A chalice circle that offers a check-in and discussion of a weekly life issue topic selected by a group member. Parents – WE’LL give you Wings! (every other Mon, 9a) (mondaywings@horizonuu.org ) WINGS Chalice Circle is a fun and friendly group whose purpose is to support the person within each parent by creating friendships and nurturing our intellect and creativity. The Women’s Friendship in Growth (WFIG) Chalice Circle (wfig@horizonuu.org) Meets on the 2nd, 4th, and 5th Wednesdays of each month from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. We welcome women of all ages to join us for fun, connection, and growth. We share stories from our lives and discuss topics that help us get to know one another better. Recent programs have included How to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci: Seven Steps to Genius Every Day, a night of Board Games, and TED talks on the Power of Vulnerability, Connected but Alone, and Body Language.
