In recent elections the media popularized the notion of Red and Blue States, promoting a picture of the vast plains and interiors of the US painted in the red rhetoric of the conservative religious right with the coasts and some boarder states shaded in the blue response of liberal language. Such images paint a nation divided on issues, on perspectives and on strategies. As the next round of elections draws near, being a mostly “blue” congregation in a mostly “red” community presents a number of challenges.

FROM THE MINISTER

mUUsings Greetings from your interim minister.

Fall has long been a season of thanksgiving. With the in-gathering of the harvest and the change of season, with the celebration of Rosh Hashanah and Divali, and with the return of members and friends from vacation travels, we are reminded of many of the reasons we have to be grateful. Our life together as a vibrant, religious community is made possible by the contributions and efforts of many. This is a congregation of folks willing to step forward and pitch-in. And, today, let us stop and say thank-you. Thank you – to those who’ve volunteered to provide hospitality on Sunday mornings. For your willingness to make coffee, set out refreshments and make the Fellowship Hall bloom with fellowship. For greeting and collecting and for setting-up and taking down whatever needs it. Thank you – to those who’ve taken on new jobs. For your gifts and talents in stewardship, education, music, worship, administration, pastoral care and social justice. Thank you – to those who are unsuspecting heroes. For your willingness to be drafted when the need arises. For coming early or staying late and pitching in and letting someone else be in charge.

HORIZON NEWS

Thank you – to those who increased your pledge and made gifts to the operating fund. For your commitment to our mission and to our programs. For your understanding that sometimes it just takes more than we expected to make ends meet. To all of you for your presence, for your commitment, for your support – to all of you for dreaming and planning and working to transform our piece of the world – to all of you Faithfully,

Rev. Helen 972-492-4940 ext. 106

Horizon’s Ministerial Search Process Learning to Think Outside the Boxes We Create On October 17th, 45 Horizon members gathered for the Beyond Categorical Thinking (BCT) workshop to study issues involved in seeing individuals as more than their labels. This is especially critical work for us during our search year—to reflect upon what issues or concerns we may have when considering a prospective minister who is of a different color, is differently abled in body or mind, or of a different ethnicity, gender identity or sexual orientation than most of the members of our congregation. We discovered some surprising things about us! There are 110 ministers seeking positions this year, 60% are women, 10% are people of color, 15% are gay, bisexual, lesbian, or transgender, and 5% live with a disability. They range in age from 25 to 75. There are 61 UU churches searching for their next minister this year. During the workshop we anonymously answered questions about what our concerns would be if prospective ministers for Horizon fell within one of these categories, or boxes. Our responses ranged from being concerned that a differently abled minister would not have the stamina to minister fully to our church, to apprehension that a minister of color or of a different sexual identity, would preach mostly from their own experience and the variety we desire in our services would be limited.

HORIZON NEWS

Ministerial Search Committee A big thank you to Horizon members and friends for taking time to share with the search committee your aspirations, affections, concerns, and desires for Horizon and its future partnership with a new minister. The Ministerial Search Committee (MSC) is analyzing the survey results and preparing the data for Horizon’s Congregational Record. The MSC is also gathering letters, photos, videos, and descriptions of Horizon activities for inclusion in the information packet that will be sent to interested ministerial candidates. Do you have photos or a video of a Horizon activity or small group meeting that tell part of the Horizon story? Or maybe you could take a few photos at the next Horizon event you attend? Is there a description of a recent Horizon service project or class discussion that you would like to share with ministerial candidates to help them understand who we are as a congregation? Please consider sharing them with us at MSC@horizonuu.org for use in the digital information packet. On the following pages is an outline of the year-long Ministerial Search Process. You can learn more about the UUA ministerial search process at www.uua.org/careers/ministers/transitions.

HORIZON NEWS Horizon’s Ministerial Search Process May Ministerial Search Committee (MSC) elected: The Board and Nominating Committee and a group of volunteers attempted to call all Horizon members and solicited names for the Ministerial Search Committee. The first seven people whose names were mentioned the most often were asked to serve on the MSC. All seven agreed to serve. June The newly formed MSC held a retreat with our UUA Ministerial Search Representative Jim Eller and began to develop working relationships and set goals and roles for the process.

July-August The MSC became knowledgeable about the process and designed the survey. September-October Congregational input: 160+ Horizon members and friends completed a Survey Monkey survey and 68 people participated in small group conversations with MSC members. The collected data provides required information for Horizon’s Congregational Record and helps the MSC draft the Ministerial Profile (500 word description of what we’re looking for in our next minister) and the Congregational Profile (500 word description of the character, vision, and mission of Horizon’s membership). October Beyond Categorical Thinking: At a workshop led by Keith Kron from the UUA Transitions Office 40+ Horizon members including the MSC learned about the challenges faced by ministers when congregations make assumptions about them based on racial, ethnic, gender, sexual-orientation, and other categories.

HORIZON NEWS

Horizon’s Ministerial Search Process Mid-October through November MSC completes the Congregational Record and submits it to the UUA Transitions Office. Mid-October through mid-December MCS creates the Horizon Unitarian Universalist Church Digital Information Packet. Do you have pictures, videos, narratives, or web-design skills that would help make the packet the best it can be? Contact the MSC at MSC@horizonuu.org. January-February In January the MSC receives the Ministerial Records of interested ministers. The MSC conducts phone interviews and reviews packets and references of ministers. February-March MSC selects and interviews three to four pre-candidates: The MSC will conduct in-depth in-person interviews and attend Sunday services of precandidates at neutral pulpit sites. April MSC recommends one candidate to the congregation. Early May Congregation considers the candidate during “Candidating Week” and holds a vote.

Ramona Ramazani Director of Membership and Pastoral Care dmpc@horizonuu.org Meet your Horizon Neighbors Did you know that church members are assigned to one of the 12 neighborhood groups based on their geographical location? Neighborhood Groups (NG) are support systems comprised of other Horizon members who live in your area. Each NG has a leader that assists with coordinating events, community projects, and assistance to members in times of need. Each group can be as active as they decide to be.

What can a Neighborhood Group do? Be a visual example of the UU Principles by participating together as a group in a city wide service project. Get together for coffee or a meal at a local eatery and get to know each other outside of church walls. Plan and attend parties throughout the year. Assist with projects at Horizon. Help each other by providing meals, rides or a shoulder to cry on during difficult times. Anything else you can think of!

Page 11

The_Week@HorizonUU

COMMUNITY NEWS Community Cares

Let’s face it…we live in an area of the country that does not always promote our values of religious freedom and social justice. In most of our neighborhoods we are the minority in a sea of conservative values and beliefs. Wouldn’t it be nice to know your Horizon Neighbors and build connections outside of the church walls? Not only does this help us stay connected to the church but it also helps us learn more about each other. In times of need (death, illness, job loss etc..) it may be less isolating and easier to reach out to those in your group if you already have a connection.

Throughout the year you will be receiving emails or calls from your neighborhood

group leader. They may have planned an event, a service project or are asking to obtain help for another neighbor. Please let your leader know of any suggestions you may have to help build some connections within your group.

Welcome New Members!

Rhonda Lundsgaard and Carla Erb met each other 17 years ago at Capital One and have been going strong ever since. Rhonda is originally from New Orleans and moved to this area with Carla after Hurricane Katrina. Carla is originally from San Antonio. In 2001 they celebrated their commitment to each other in Hawaii. They were legally married on September 5th of this year at Horizon! They have two kids…Richard Lundsgaard (13 yrs old) an Jordan Erb (14 years old). Together the family enjoys traveling, boy scouts, football, outdoor activities and volunteer work . Some additions to their family includes two dogs and two cats. You will have to ask them about each as it looks like they all have very unique personalities. You will often see the boy’s grandmother, Linda Erb, with them at Sunday services. Rhonda loves to cook and share with friends and family. Carla has a special talent of being a “master packer”. We welcome this family to Horizon and look forward to experiencing their special talents and volunteerism!

COMMUNITY NEWS AFTER CHURCH LUNCH BUNCH One way to get to know people from Horizon better is to join us after church for lunch. Everyone is welcome (even friends and family joining you after church). The restaurant will change each week. Check the welcome desk each week for the location. We meet most Sundays. Ask for the “Horizon” tables. It may take a few minutes following the service for lunch attendees to arrive but we’re coming!

Second Sunday Potluck: Everyone welcome! Horizon’s potlucks provide an opportunity to get to know others and be with our church community. We appreciate your bringing a bit more than needed for our families, allowing us to offer this hospitality to all members, visitors, and friends.

Adult Growth and Learning Have your heard about the UUA Common Read? Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson A Story of Justice and Redemption. A powerful true story about the potential for mercy to redeem us, and a clarion call to fix our broken system of justice-from one of the most brilliant and influential lawyers of our time.

Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn't commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship-and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.

Have your heard about the UUA Common Read? Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson Just Mercy is at once an unforgettable account of an idealistic, gifted young lawyer's coming of age, a moving window into the lives of those he has defended, and an inspiring argument for compassion in the pursuit of true justice.

Encouraging a sense of gratitude in our children Did you see this article in last Sunday’s New York Times? This piece explains to parents how to make the value of charitable giving concrete and personally relevant. You may not be able to adequately thank or repay those that have helped you in the past, but you pay it forward by helping others. It is a good lesson about our Seventh UU Principle – The Interdependent Web. http://parenting.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/10/28/to-teach-children-to-give-tell-them-how-muchyour-family-has-been-given/

News for Children and Teens Would you like to be in the holiday play on December 13th?

On Sunday, December 13th Horizon will put on a fun holiday play during the service entitled, "The Twelve Days of Christmas." We are looking for teens to act out the role of the messengers who will guide the elementary children to the stage and who will pantomime being "advisers" to the prince. The only requirements are a desire to help and the ability to take direction from the adults in charge of the play. Messengers/ advisers will need to attend a rehearsal at 2pm on December 12 and be at the performance on December 13 from 10am-12pm. If your family is interested, email dlre@horizonuu.org

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY NEWS Leader: Nancy Foreman SocialResponsibility@HorizonUU.org

From arrogance, pompousness, and from thinking ourselves more important than we are, may some saving sense of humor liberate us. For allowing ourselves to ridicule the faith of others, may we be forgiven.

For making war and calling it peace, special privilege and calling it justice, indifference and calling it tolerance, pollution and calling it progress, may we be cured. For telling ourselves and others that evil is inevitable while good is impossible, may we stand corrected. God of our mixed up, tragic, aspiring, doubting, and insurgent lives, help us to be as good as in our hearts we have always wanted to be. ~Harry Meserve Social Responsibility at Horizon Unitarian Universalist Church includes denominational activities as well as activities with our allies. YEAR–ROUND STEWARDSHIP

YEAR-ROUND STEWARDSHIP IS WELL UNDER WAY In case you haven’t heard, Horizon is shifting to a year-round Stewardship Program, where each HORIZON UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CHURCH month about 20 families and individuals are asked to renew their pledges. These families are also given an opportunity to engage in a fun event with others pledging that month. We began the program in March 2015, and so far, about half of Horizon's pledging families have been contacted about pledge renewal and attending one of the monthly events. The rest of you will be contacted over the remainder of 2015 or in early 2016. Please watch for your pledge commitment letter and we hope you will attend and enjoy the activity that the leaders of your month choose. During your month we ask that you let our accountant, Menaca Padakandla, know your plans to support Horizon during the following year. You can return the commitment letter or use any means of communication with her, including email, accounting@horizonuu.org, and phone, 972-492-4940, ext. 105.

STEWARDSHIP NEWS

Artist Statement Art helps us define our humanity; it seduces us with beauty, pushes us to define what we are repulsed by, and every imaginable response in between. Artists are compelled to create. The act of creating evokes pleasure and pain, like great love. Time disappears when with this love. The ultimate result is something that you hope will speak to others. My own art has incubated from subjective beginnings. My undergraduate work focused on psychological portraits. The backgrounds in these paintings were provocative and they started to interest me. In grad school I began painting Asian textiles approaching them as high contrast portraits. I started my own Faux Finishing business and became intrigued with the lack of subject matter on a fauxed wall. The technique, products and tools were intoxicating. Surface quality became paramount. My current work bridges the divide between art and faux. I use trowels, palette knives, even pine needles to escape the inhibiting brush. I push and pull the visual plane, as if it were a puzzle with a hidden truth. I scratch and stab. Inspired by rust, peeling paint, old wood, sound waves, distortion and objects that have been used to exhaustion. The surface is the story and color plays the role of both protagonist and antagonist. Wendy Marceron
