Adult Religious Exploration Sunday Morning Forum – On Sunday, August 30th, Tom Williams will be sharing with our Sign Up this Sunday for the Crop class about Jungian archetypes, in the liWalk - The Metrocrest CROP Hunger brary from 9:00 am to 10:10 am. Walk is a community-wide event sponsored by Church World Service and organized by religious groups, businesses, schools and others to raise funds to end hunger in the U.S. and around the world. The Wayside Pulpit Committee is searching for another member. We work mainly as an online group, with infrequent meetings at church. The Men's Group assists us by changing out the sign each week. Jobs with Justice Rally/Sing WHAT: We are invited to participate (and sing) during a march and rally on Saturday, Sept 5, with Jobs with Justice.

WHEN: A hearing will be held from 10 to 11:45 a.m. regarding child poverty as it intersects with unlivable wages and worker protections. At 11:45 a.m. the march begins (going till about 12:30 – not long) and then the rally/picnic. We are invited to attend the hearing….then sing during the march and rally. FROM THE MINISTER

mUUsings Greetings from your interim minister. Ah…the lazy days of summer. Is it just my imagination or are lazy days mostly a thing of the imagination? With the press of schedules and commitments, the need for long range projections and strategic plans, “lazy” days seem to be pushed into the background. Time when there’s nothing else to do may have become a rare gift. I remember the summers of my youth – a rich mix of week-ends at the lake, visits with my New Mexico grandparents and playing kick-the-can with kids in the neighborhood. And the high point: My week at church camp. Seven glorious days of crafts, swimming, hiking, playing, singing, resting, being, doing – well, you get the idea. I remember camp as an important “growing up” experience that helped me learn more about who I was and who I wanted to be. Unitarian Universalists in Texas are fortunate to be able to attend that kind of camp at the UBarU Retreat and Conference Center. Youth and adults of all ages are treated to a beautiful setting, well designed programs and, best of all, the magical connections that grow among folks who live, work and play together.

And there will be other opportunities to make new connections this summer. Gone are the days when we can close the doors for the summer and walk away from the day-to-day challenges of church and community life. So, we’ll be here – offering worship on Sundays and gatherings all week long. Your leadership is planning program opportunities for the 2015-2016 year and there will be more to do, more to explore and more to imagine. Though I am looking forward to the mix of new experiences and more familiar ones, I know it won’t be my “lazy” time. There will be much to do, plan for and think about. So the challenge remains…how to be renewed in the midst of a busy life. What are you doing this summer to be renewed? When is your “lazy” time? All too soon the pace of the season accelerates as summer becomes fall and that turns to winter. Enjoy today – tomorrow comes soon enough. Faithfully, Rev. Helen 972-492-4940 ext. 106

Ministerial Search Committee

BEYOND CATEGORICAL THINKING – SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17TH THINK OF A MINISTER. DON’T THINK OF AN ELEPHANT. Chances are you thought of both. And distinct images perhaps came to mind. In terms of a minister, what images came to your mind? Was it a person of a particular gender, race, or age? “Beyond Categorical Thinking” is an important part of the search process for our congregation. In searching for the person who would be the best ministerial match for our congregation, we could potentially overlook, or let biases keep us from recognizing, that a particular candidate may be the best match for us. In our efforts to find the best match, our Ministerial Search Committee will host a Beyond Categorical Thinking (BCT) workshop on Saturday, October 17th. BCT trainers will facilitate a 3-hour conversation with the congregation where we will examine how we can avoid letting undiscovered prejudice become a part of our search process, and they will lead the Sunday service on October 18th. This is yet another way for us to put our faith into lived experience and help ensure that we will find the minister who will serve us well .

Ministerial Search Committee

This opportunity allows the entire congregation fuller participation in the search process. It will allow each of us to explore our hopes and concerns for a new minister, learn more about the search process, and see how our own history (both personal and congregational) might enhance or interfere with our efforts in this search. Please set aside Saturday, October 17th, from 10:00 to 1:30 to participate in this important workshop. A hearty brunch will be served at 10:00, with the workshop beginning at 10:30. Childcare will be provided for children up to age 12. More information will be posted as the date gets closer so keep reading your newsletter and watching the Ministerial Search Committee bulletin board. The BCT program is offered by the Unitarian Universalist Association, who provides support and help in the ministerial search process for UU congregations. We are very fortunate to have Rev. Keith Kron, Director of the UUA Transitions Office, as the leader of the BCT team for Horizon.

HORIZON NEWS HORIZON SUPPORTS TEACHERS FOR A BETTER BELIZE THE VILLAGE OF DOLORES In July, Horizon donated “Share-the-Plate� to Teachers for a Better Belize to help the Mayan village of Dolores in southern Belize. Dolores is a medium size Ketchi village in the Toledo District of Belize. The village has only limited access to electricity through a few generators. The school has no access to electricity. Water is available using hand-pumps to untreated wells. It is a two-hour drive over unpaved roads to Punta Gorda, the town in the district. In the rainy season, the roads can become impassible due to flooding and mud. Villagers live in single room houses with wooden or dirt floors, wooden walls and thatch roofs. Everyone in the family has a hammock for sleeping which is tied up during the day. There is no furniture in the house except perhaps a table for preparing food. Clothes and other goods are stored along the walls of the house. A new principal came to Dolores with a vision of improving life for this village about 3 years ago. The school is large for a village school and currently serves about 175 students from preschool to the equivalent of our grade 8. None of the girls in this village attended high school at the time Hermalinda Ical arrived. Girls stayed home, married and raised the family. Under her leadership, 5 girls and 8 boys will be attending high school this year. She also started a preschool program for 3 and 4 year olds and teaches the class herself because there are not enough children attending to qualify for a teacher. It is a slow process to change culture and only a few parents will let their children attend school this young, but the number is growing.

HORIZON NEWS In order to support her upper level students and her high school students she needed a generator to power a laptop computer so the students could do research. The encyclopedia she had was printed in 1965. She wanted to create a library with books for all students to read and reference material for her older students. Although she was assigned a two-room apartment attached to the school, she gave this up and turned one room into her preschool and one room into her library. In addition to the generator she needed shelving for her books and supplies. Patti Burns and Peggy Gill brought her request back to Horizon and everyone stepped up either by providing books or donating to Share-the-Plate. We raised almost $900 to help with Dolores. Peggy traveled to Belize the first week in August and with other volunteers delivered the 14 boxes of books collected by Horizon. She and Hermalinda bought a new generator that will give 7-8 hours of power and paid for 300 board feet of lumber. A villager will create the lumber from local trees and the teachers will build the shelves in the library. The village also held a fund raiser in May and will buy a printer scanner this week. Mrs. Ical will use her laptop in the library for student use.

HORIZON NEWS The generator provides much needed electricity to the teachers. Many have laptops but had no way to recharge them during the day. This lets the teachers show short videos and use some of the resources that were unavailable. Horizon has formed a true partnership with the village of Dolores. Hermalinda is hoping to get CD’s of encyclopedias and other reference material. While we have the option of using Wikapedia, Dolores does not have Internet so must rely on CD’s for reference. If you still have any old CD’s please give them to Peggy or Patti. They are planning to return the week before Thanksgiving. Hopefully, other members of Horizon will want to visit this amazing place with Patti and Peggy!

Women’s Retreat October 2nd-4th, 2015

Would you like to join us on a fantastic retreat experience? Our annual gathering invites members and visitors to catch up with old friends and make new ones. It’s a relaxing weekend in a relaxed setting. This is a chance to get away from it all and enjoy the company of some fabulous women!

Glen Lake Camp and Retreat Center http://www.glenlake.org is a beautiful retreat center with wooded areas, walking trails, and access to the Paluxy River. We stay in deluxe cabins and also have access to a limited number of hotel-style rooms. Each year we have a theme for the retreat that inspires and recharges us. The theme guides the Saturday morning presentation and group activities. Don't worry, there is a nice balance of together time and alone time if you want it. This year, our theme is "R-E-S-P-E-C-T Find out what it means to . . . YOU! The retreat is October 2-4. Registration starts August 2nd. We are in need of some help on the planning committee! It is a fun committee to be on. We have a great time just creating the retreat. If you are interested in joining the Planning Committee and helping make the retreat all it can be, send an email to womensretreat@horizonuu.org. COMMUNITY NEWS AFTER CHURCH LUNCH BUNCH One way to get to know people from Horizon better is to join us after church for lunch. Everyone is welcome (even friends and family joining you after church). The restaurant will change each week. Check the welcome desk each week for the location. We meet most Sundays. Ask for the “Horizon” tables. It may take a few minutes following the service for lunch attendees to arrive but we’re coming!

Second Sunday Potluck: Everyone welcome! Horizon’s potlucks provide an opportunity to get to know others and be with our church community. We appreciate your bringing a bit more than needed for our families, allowing us to offer this hospitality to all members, visitors, and friends.

Bending the Arc Towards Justice, cont. Tuesdays 7:30-9:00pm October 13-November 17 Fellowship Hall Grounded in the belief that even "failures" in our history can be instructive, this program presents the ongoing struggle of our tradition to live up to its ever-evolving ideals of social transformation. Themes include abolition, peace-making, civil rights, free speech, utopianism, counter-culture, the women’s movements of both 19th and 20th centuries, sexuality education, and LGBT equality. After the introductory 2 hour class, participants will select the 3 topics to be discussed in the remaining sessions.

Our Whole Lives and Coming of Age begin this Sunday, August 30th at 10:30 am Due to the nature of these courses, the eighth and ninth graders will begin their classes at Horizon earlier than the other students will. OWL will meet at 10:30 in Room E2 (located next to the library) and COA students will also gather at 10:30 in Room E7 (last classroom on the right next to the back door.) Both classes will meet until approximately 12:00pm.

Horizon Book Group Current Selection From Amazon.com: Three planes crash in a small town in New Jersey over the course of just two short months. Sounds like the backdrop of a horror movie, or in this post 9/11 world, something more sinister. But this actually happened in Elizabeth, New Jersey in the early 1950s, when beloved children’s author Judy Blume (Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.) was a young girl, experiencing the horror firsthand. Who, or what, was responsible—Communists? Martians? With no obvious explanation to cling to for comfort, this terrified community could only wait for something much bigger than the next shoe to drop. This is all big, mind-blowing stuff. But in her novel In the Unlikely Event, which like Summer Sisters is written for an adult audience, Blume travels back to that time and tells the more intimate stories within the larger one, to help us better comprehend the incomprehensible, and learn the lessons that are the only bright side of catastrophe. And the overarching moral, here, is to not let fear limit your possibilities. Through the various characters that inhabit this multigenerational tale, Blume beseeches us to not be afraid to get on a plane, take career risks, pursue your dreams, fall in love…After all, life is made up of unlikely events, and they “aren’t all bad. What is Metrocrest Services? An organization that serves Horizon’s neighbors in Carrollton, Farmers Branch, Addison, Coppell and the city of Dallas in Denton County. Their mission is to assist families, individuals and senior adults who are coping with crisis situations, need help stabilizing their lives, or who require support to live independently. How do we help Metrocrest each Sunday? You are invited to bring pantry items to Sunday Service for donation. Items must be new, not expired and no glass containers. Suggested items include: Canned vegetables, fruits and meat items Helper-type mixes Dried beans & rice

Seasonal fresh produce Breads and pastries Baking supplies Toiletries & hygiene items Household cleaning supplies Are there other opportunities for us to help Metrocrest? Every other month, on a Saturday, Horizon members work in the food pantry at Metrocrest Services, helping customers shop for groceries, re-stocking shelves, organizing etc. There are two shifts available 9-11am and 11am-1pm. Upcoming Dates in 2015: September 12, & November 14. Folks from Horizon also help with projects during the holiday season and in the summer. Who do I contact at Horizon about Metrocrest? YEAR–ROUND STEWARDSHIP

YEAR-ROUND STEWARDSHIP IS WELL UNDER WAY In case you haven’t heard, Horizon is shifting to a year-round Stewardship Program, where each HORIZON UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CHURCH month about 20 families and individuals are asked to renew their pledges. These families are also given an opportunity to engage in a fun event with others pledging that month. We began the program in March 2015, and so far, about half of Horizon's pledging families have been contacted about pledge renewal and attending one of the monthly events. The rest of you will be contacted over the remainder of 2015 or in early 2016. Please watch for your pledge commitment letter and we hope you will attend and enjoy the activity that the leaders of your month choose. During your month we ask that you let our accountant, Menaca Padakandla, know your plans to support Horizon during the following year. ART ON THE HORIZON Current Artist

Jeni Tomlinson www.Jeni Tomlinson Studios.com 469-569-1994 Jeni.studios@gmail.com My work has been compared to Edward Hopper for my visual expression of realism and light. That is a high compliment! I feel blessed to have the opportunity to paint and work in the arts for a living. I was born and raised in McKinney, Texas, I have been immersed in the artist’s community there and have both taught and shown in my hometown. Educated at the University of North Texas for a BFA in Fine Arts, I have worked in the Dallas area for twenty years creating murals and paintings for clients and commercial interests. I have out of state and local patrons for my mural painting and count many people as collectors of my canvas work. I have been thrilled to have won numerous prizes and juried competitions and have been accepted into prestigious National Art Shows. I am excited by the play of light and shadow, and my work is a play in pattern and studied composition. My recent work in 2014 has emphasized the play of emotions as portrayed by musicians in the act of performance. The paintings show energy working with vibration of color to emphasize emotion and the vibrancy of the musician’s pouring out of their soul in their performance. I have always loved to paint the figure and finding the people in thoughtfulness or great emotion is so beautiful to paint.

STEWARDSHIP NEWS In 2015, I have been focused on the movement and musculature of horses in work. I have been exploring the animal in motion in watercolor and oil and have been developing a themed show with these magnificent animals in mind. I want to continue to push my technique, color process and stretch my understanding of light and texture and how they can play off each other to create new powerful and emotional images.

Cowgirl Up This show at Horizon is an eclectic mix of my work mostly from the last two years. I snuck in one painting I did do in College as I had recently drug it out and it has never been shown. Grandmother is a painting that I believe led me down an interesting path of figure painting and deeper emotional work. The last works I did were the horse paintings, Water horse and Cowgirl Up. I have enjoyed seeing the progression of skill and work that still retains the hidden story. I am currently published this year as an illustrator, and so many of my paintings could be seen as having a story all their own. I love that.

She loves hiding animals and insects throughout the pages to interest and captivate the children who read. Steinbert is a dogscientist who is searching for the best way to discover everything. Jeni is searching for the best way to show all the readers what Steinbert is up to! Bright colors, fun shapes and even funnier faces hopefully make Steinbert’s Method a fun and educational read. Drainage Project In an inspection of the church perimeter and in conversations with members of the Grounds Team, there were several areas indentified as problem areas, where water from downspouts was not draining properly and potentially causing foundation problems for the church. We received two bids to do the work to correct the drainage and Andy’s Sprinkler was chosen. The day before Tropical Storm Bill came through North Texas, the crew from Andy’s Sprinklers finished installing new drains and catch basins in three areas. West Downspout Extension

Before These two downspouts were run under the sidewalk and tied together to move the water away from the building. The downspout by the office entrance had already caused some erosion by the building, but is now corrected.

A core drill was done to create a hole in the curb. Two extension pipes were buried and connected up to the hole in the curb to allow the water to drain into the parking lot. This will properly remove the water from the play area and remove the exposed pipe.

North Entrance Drainage This is the area that contains the garden by the front door to the church. The downspouts were not properly installed and the water is not being drained properly. It is draining back into the garden. To correct this situation, the downspouts were extended and buried to the curbs where core drills were done to create holes in the curbs and allow the water to drain into the parking lot. Also, there was an area underneath the gutter that drips into the garden and water pooled there. Catch basins were installed to drain this water out to the curb.

(bookclub@horizonuu.org) The Horizon Book Group meets at 12 Noon on the fourth Tuesday of each month in the church Library. Every June and November the group decides on the books for the following six months. Bring a brown bag lunch and join in this fun group that is open to women and men. You’ll be able to share in an invigorating conversation on the session’s book. Current selections are found in the Library information niche in the lobby/narthex. For more info, you may contact bookclub@horizonuu.org. Buddhist Sangha: Tuesdays 7 PM - 9:00 PM. (buddhists@horizonuu.org ) Buddhist Sangha ("Sangha" is equivalent to a covenant group) is a weekly gathering that studies the Dharma (the teachings of Buddhism.) This is an ongoing exploration of the Four Noble Truths and the Eight Fold Path, the essential teachings of Buddhism. It is participatory and although consistency is encouraged, sessions can be attended on a drop in basis. We welcome anyone interested in a meditation practice. We welcome Moms and Dads to meet in the Horizon Church library. We have topics of interest not just about parenting UU children but personal and spiritual self-growth. Past topics have included: the philosophy of life according to Doctor Who, Karma, creating our "bucket list", our family trees, and what does it mean to be a UU parent. We also do a social outreach project once a year. Our schedule follows the school year and we break for school holidays and for the summer. During the school year, child care is provided. mondaywings@horizonuu.org The Women’s Friendship in Growth (WFIG) meets on the 2nd, 4th, and 5th Wednesdays, from 7:30 - 9 pm in the Horizon Library. The purpose of this group is to strengthen friendships among women. In addition to regular check-ins about our lives, we have discussions that help us get to know one another better. On 2nd Wednesdays, topics come from a “This I Believe” book. No advance reading is required. On 4th Wednesdays we start with a TED talk we watch together. On 5th Wednesdays we do a variety of fun activities!
