FROM THE MINISTER

mUUsings Greetings from your interim minister. The summer vacation season is behind us and we’re settling in. If you are here because you are looking for religious education for your children, if you are here because you want to hear a good choir or because you’re hoping to socialize with friends, you are welcome. Yet know that there is more – much more – that is growing in this congregation. This is a space where your thinking is challenged, where what has always been is rigorously reviewed and where bias is peeled away, one prejudice at a time. This is a space where hearts are strengthened in a community that cares, a place where the still small voice of the spirit can be heard and shared - where Mystery, with a capital M is important in understanding who and whose we are. To be a religious community relevant in the 21st century, there must be committed members. As you move through the Fall with its round of programs and activities and with the many opportunities to do – and do – and do, take some time to consider what authentic membership means. Michael Durall, author of The Almost Church Revitalized, identified five criteria for membership. Can you make these commitments? Attend Sunday services regularly Participate in one program that deepens your faith Participate in one outreach project Reach the 5 to 10% charitable giving level as soon as possible Tell others about the church

After all, the church doesn’t exist to serve us. We are here to serve. We work on ourselves, in order to help others. And we help others as a way to work on ourselves. It’s going to be a dynamic year, with much to do and much to ponder. It’s going to be an ordinary year, filled with the mundane and the miraculous. And like all years there will be ups and downs, successes and failures. I know that you’ll wrestle with challenges known and unknown, that you’ll struggle to balance a budget and make hard choices about what to do and what to leave undone. That’s the way life unfolds in this congregation. Welcome to the journey.

Ministerial Search Committee

BEYOND CATEGORICAL THINKING WORKSHOP SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17TH On October 17th Rev. Keith Kron, Director of the Transitions Office at the Unitarian Universalist Association, will be at Horizon to lead a workshop on “Beyond Categorical Thinking� (BCT). BCT training helps congregations broaden their outlook and strengthens diversity in the search for a minister. Congregations can potentially overlook the person who is the best match for their next minister if they assume that the ideal minister looks a certain way. The workshop will be both engaging and fun, with small group discussions and challenging hypothetical case studies. It will be an opportunity to think, to learn, and to work together as a congregation to open ourselves to new possibilities. The selection of a minister is the most important decision a UU congregation will make. The Beyond Categorical Thinking workshop is another opportunity for everyone in our congregation to be a part of that selection process. This experience and your responses during the workshop will provide guidance for the search committee in our work. As Director of Transitions, Rev. Kron communicates with every minister in search in the UUA. Although there are many BCT trainers, we are fortunate to have Rev. Kron as ours, and this is another great chance for us to showcase what a vital and welcoming congregation we are.

Please note this change! The workshop will begin at 10:00 AM on October 17 th and a lunch will be served around noon, after which the workshop will continue until around 2:00. Childcare will be provided. We hope you will join other Horizon members and friends for this important and enlightening part of our ministerial search! Your Ministerial Search Committee

Horizon volunteers will be assisting customers in the food pantry THIS Saturday morning, September 12! There are two shifts available 9-11am and 11am-1pm. Please let Victoria Simmons know at victoria.simmons@bvk.com if you are interested in volunteering and which shift you prefer. Thank you! What is Metrocrest Services? An organization that serves Horizon’s neighbors in Carrollton, Farmers Branch, Addison, Coppell and the city of Dallas in Denton County. Their mission is to assist families, individuals and senior adults who are coping with crisis situations, need help stabilizing their lives, or who require support to live independently. Are there other opportunities for us to help Metrocrest? Every other month, on a Saturday, Horizon members work in the food pantry at Metrocrest Services, helping customers shop for groceries, re-stocking shelves, organizing etc. There are two shifts available 9-11am and 11am-1pm. Upcoming Dates in 2015: September 12, & November 14. Folks from Horizon also help with projects during the holiday season and in the summer. Who do I contact at Horizon about Metrocrest?

Potluck’s Back Please join us this Sunday. Everyone’s Welcome! We are happy to announce the resumption of our Sunday Potlucks! The Neighborhood Group Leaders have volunteered to host (set up, receive food and clean up) the potlucks on a quarterly basis. Our next Potluck is September 13th and it will be hosted by the Denton/Corinth/Highland Village (Gay Cox-Leader), Lewisville (Cat Sabih-Leader) Neighborhood Groups and another TBA group. To improve potluck coordination, if you know what you are bringing at any point before the event, please let us know. The hostess brings drinks & table snacks and arrives a little early to set up the buffet area (plates, cups, utensils) and the Bunco tables. Women’s Retreat October 2nd-4th, 2015

Would you like to join us on a fantastic retreat experience? Our annual gathering invites members and visitors to catch up with old friends and make new ones. It’s a relaxing weekend in a relaxed setting. This is a chance to get away from it all and enjoy the company of some fabulous women!

Glen Lake Camp and Retreat Center http://www.glenlake.org is a beautiful retreat center with wooded areas, walking trails, and access to the Paluxy River. We stay in deluxe cabins and also have access to a limited number of hotel-style rooms. Each year we have a theme for the retreat that inspires and recharges us. The theme guides the Saturday morning presentation and group activities. Don't worry, there is a nice balance of together time and alone time if you want it. This year, our theme is "R-E-S-P-E-C-T Find out what it means to . . . YOU! The retreat is October 2-4. Registration starts August 2nd. We are in need of some help on the planning committee! It is a fun committee to be on. We have a great time just creating the retreat. If you are interested in joining the Planning Committee and helping make the retreat all it can be, send an email to womensretreat@horizonuu.org. COMMUNITY NEWS AFTER CHURCH LUNCH BUNCH One way to get to know people from Horizon better is to join us after church for lunch. Everyone is welcome (even friends and family joining you after church). The restaurant will change each week. Check the welcome desk each week for the location. We meet most Sundays. Ask for the “Horizon” tables. It may take a few minutes following the service for lunch attendees to arrive but we’re coming!

Second Sunday Potluck: Everyone welcome! Horizon’s potlucks provide an opportunity to get to know others and be with our church community. We appreciate your bringing a bit more than needed for our families, allowing us to offer this hospitality to all members, visitors, and friends.

Adult Growth and Learning Last Chance…begins THIS Sunday… Women’s Journey Group Starting September 13th 2nd and 4th Sundays 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. September 13- December 13

This small group for women will meet for seven sessions around the theme of Finding Balance. To foster a better group environment, we will use a special structure designed to encourage sharing and supportive listening. Members are also asked to commit seriously to attending all meetings -- the occasional absence is fine, but this journey group draws its strength from members' regular participation.

News for Children and Teens Special role for children and teens during Sunday’s service On Sunday, Horizon will celebrate the beginning of the new church year with a Water Ceremony. Children and teens will have important roles to play during the service, most importantly assembling the river mural with notes from the entire congregation. It will be a meaningful experience for your child or teen, and all are invited to participate.

Fall Children’s classes begin next Sunday September 20th

Classes for Children Fall 2015 From a Montessori-based program, to learning from sacred texts from the world’s major religions, our children and youth will have a fall full of learning and fun at Horizon Preschool Celebrating Me and My World 10:30-11:30am (doors open at 10:20) Room S3 (Green classroom)

Our Little UUs will learn about the wonderful and wide world around them through the class, Celebrating Me and My World. They will listen to stories about our faith that teach our history and principles, and participate in activities and hands-on experiences to not only learn about the world and people around them, but also about themselves as unique and spiritual beings. Preschoolers will also enjoy visits from their “Big BUUddies” from the middle school class. The 6-8th graders will visit twice a semester to play with, read to and do activities with their “Little BUUddies” in October and December.

Kindergarten and 1st Grade: Spirit Play - I Am UU 10:15-11:30am (families begin together in the service) Room S5 (Purple classroom)

Spirit Play is a Montessori-inspired class during which the children will listen to stories about our Unitarian Universalist Faith and then be free to choose the way they would like to explore themes from the story. This semester's focus is I Am UU and lessons will center around the Seven UU Principles and Six Sources. Children can choose activity stations focusing on art, science, meditation and self-expression.

2nd and 3rd Grade: Sacred Stories from Around the World 10:45-11:30 (families begin in the service) Room S7 (Khaki and pink classroom)

The second and third graders will take an imaginary trip around the world and learn more about their UU faith by hearing sacred stories from other cultures. At the beginning of each unit they will be introduced to an eight year old from the focus culture and not only hear stories from that culture, but also learn how it has influenced Unitarian Universalism. Students will apply what they have learned through games, songs and other creative activities.

Children in this class will also have opportunities to participate in service projects, and can look forward to holiday celebrations and perform in a holiday play December 13.

GROWTH AND LEARNING NEWS 4th and 5th Grade: Sacred Stories from Around the World 10:45-11:30 (families begin in the service) Room S6

Sacred Stories introduces children to religious literature, which is central to our culture and our heritage as Unitarian Universalists. The program will examine stories from major world religions. The twin goals of this class are to become familiar with stories that are often told or referred to in our culture from a UU perspective, and also to learn a little about some of the customs and spiritual practices of the cultures in question. Fourth and Fifth graders can also look forward to gatherings with other Horizon students, a social action project and two holiday events in December.

Middle School: (Grades 6, 7, and 8)

Compass Points 10:45-11:30 (families begin in the service) Room 8 (“Big Room” of the Portable Bldg.)

Preteens will be exploring the people they are and the people they want to become through the Compass Points program this year. Compass Points takes youth ages 11 to 13 on a journey through Unitarian Universalism by exploring our diverse and rich history, the Seven Principles, and our Six Sources. Not only will the children gain an understanding of where we come from as a faith, but also where we hope to be going. In addition to classes on Sunday morning, Middle School participants also have opportunities for fellowship, worship, and service outside of class times. A North Texas Middle School lock in will take place in early November. Horizon middle school students will also visit their “Little BUUddies” in the preschool class several times each semester.

Eighth Graders learn to clarify personal values as they explore spiritual, emotional, physical, and social aspects of sexuality. The class is approached with frankness about sex and sexuality while maintaining a level of respect and appropriateness.

During this important year, youth examine their maturing religious identity and diverse UU heritage. They spend the year in three main areas of study: Unitarian Universalism (traditions, ceremonies, historical figures, and the Seven Principles) the Six Sources (their major traditions and faith practices, and other world faith traditions,) and The Great Religious Questions, such as “Is there a God?” or “Why are we here?”

Grades 10-12: YRUU Living as a UU: Faith In Action 10:45-11:45 (families begin in the service) Room P9 (Portable Bldg.)

This year's curriculum for our senior high students explores our Unitarian Universalist values through learning about UU ethics and planning and assisting with social justice projects. Teens will choose topics and activities with the help of their advisors. Youth will also have opportunities to participate in the Dallas Pride Parade, several lock-ins, weekend conferences, and leadership development opportunities throughout the year.

Horizon Book Group Current Selection From Amazon.com: Three planes crash in a small town in New Jersey over the course of just two short months. Sounds like the backdrop of a horror movie, or in this post 9/11 world, something more sinister. But this actually happened in Elizabeth, New Jersey in the early 1950s, when beloved children’s author Judy Blume (Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.) was a young girl, experiencing the horror firsthand. Who, or what, was responsible—Communists? Martians? With no obvious explanation to cling to for comfort, this terrified community could only wait for something much bigger than the next shoe to drop. This is all big, mind-blowing stuff. But in her novel In the Unlikely Event, which like Summer Sisters is written for an adult audience, Blume travels back to that time and tells the more intimate stories within the larger one, to help us better comprehend the incomprehensible, and learn the lessons that are the only bright side of catastrophe. And the overarching moral, here, is to not let fear limit your possibilities. Through the various characters that inhabit this multigenerational tale, Blume beseeches us to not be afraid to get on a plane, take career risks, pursue your dreams, fall in love…After all, life is made up of unlikely events, and they “aren’t all bad. The September 20, 2015 Share the Plate recipient will be the UUSC, Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (http://www.uusc.org). The UUSC mission is to advance human rights and social justice around the world, partnering with those who confront unjust power structures and mobilizing to challenge oppressive policies. Their goal is to have a world free from oppression and injustice, where all can realize their full human rights. With your support, UUSC aims to ensure that fundamental human rights are realities for everyone, no matter race, gender or class. UUSC works specifically with people and communities who are denied their rights because of who they are - women, people of color, religious minorities, refugees, and others - and who are not served by mainstream human rights organizations. Every day, UUSC is taking action to advance a full array of human rights at risk, including the following: Workers Rights, The human right to water, Safety and relief in the wake of disasters and freedom from torture, genocide and conflict.

Thanks to all Horizon UU Members who participated in our social issues survey conducted on August 30 during services in which we discussed our renewed efforts to "bend Texas toward justice." Survey results:

Eighty five folks responded, and half gave their email addresses and/or phone numbers to receive updates and information!!! What a wonderful response! Here is the tally for issues at Horizon: Women's Reproductive Rights 59 Environment 48 Income Inequality 47 Criminal Justice 32 Immigration

Voting Rights 30 There were also write in comments and votes for the following issues: Access to mental health, Access to health care, Gun control, LGBT rights Funding for disabilities, Racial Justice, and Public Education. Our top three issues have gone forward to help direct the focus of state wide efforts. PLEASE BE AWARE that we are not in any way limited by the survey or by the TXUUJM regarding the social justice projects in which Horizon can participate. One of the advantages with TXUUJM, however, is that we will know and be able to collaborate with other congregations in addressing specific issues. What is Metrocrest Services? An organization that serves Horizon’s neighbors in Carrollton, Farmers Branch, Addison, Coppell and the city of Dallas in Denton County. Their mission is to assist families, individuals and senior adults who are coping with crisis situations, need help stabilizing their lives, or who require support to live independently. How do we help Metrocrest each Sunday? You are invited to bring pantry items to Sunday Service for donation. Items must be new, not expired and no glass containers. Suggested items include: Canned vegetables, fruits and meat items Helper-type mixes

Dried beans & rice Seasonal fresh produce Breads and pastries Baking supplies Toiletries & hygiene items Household cleaning supplies Are there other opportunities for us to help Metrocrest? Every other month, on a Saturday, Horizon members work in the food pantry at Metrocrest Services, helping customers shop for groceries, re-stocking shelves, organizing etc. There are two shifts available 911am and 11am-1pm. Upcoming Dates in 2015: September 12, & November 14. Folks from Horizon also help with projects during the holiday season and in the summer. Who do I contact at Horizon about Metrocrest? YEAR–ROUND STEWARDSHIP

YEAR-ROUND STEWARDSHIP IS WELL UNDER WAY In case you haven’t heard, Horizon is shifting to a year-round Stewardship Program, where each HORIZON UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CHURCH month about 20 families and individuals are asked to renew their pledges. These families are also given an opportunity to engage in a fun event with others pledging that month. We began the program in March 2015, and so far, about half of Horizon's pledging families have been contacted about pledge renewal and attending one of the monthly events. The rest of you will be contacted over the remainder of 2015 or in early 2016. Please watch for your pledge commitment letter and we hope you will attend and enjoy the activity that the leaders of your month choose. During your month we ask that you let our accountant, Menaca Padakandla, know your plans to support Horizon during the following year. You can return the commitment letter or use any means of communication with her, including email, accounting@horizonuu.org, and phone, 972-492-4940, ext. 105.

ART ON THE HORIZON Current Artist

Jeni Tomlinson www.Jeni Tomlinson Studios.com 469-569-1994 Jeni.studios@gmail.com My work has been compared to Edward Hopper for my visual expression of realism and light. That is a high compliment! I feel blessed to have the opportunity to paint and work in the arts for a living. I was born and raised in McKinney, Texas, I have been immersed in the artist’s community there and have both taught and shown in my hometown. Educated at the University of North Texas for a BFA in Fine Arts, I have worked in the Dallas area for twenty years creating murals and paintings for clients and commercial interests. I have out of state and local patrons for my mural painting and count many people as collectors of my canvas work. I have been thrilled to have won numerous prizes and juried competitions and have been accepted into prestigious National Art Shows. I am excited by the play of light and shadow, and my work is a play in pattern and studied composition. My recent work in 2014 has emphasized the play of emotions as portrayed by musicians in the act of performance. The paintings show energy working with vibration of color to emphasize emotion and the vibrancy of the musician’s pouring out of their soul in their performance. I have always loved to paint the figure and finding the people in thoughtfulness or great emotion is so beautiful to paint.

STEWARDSHIP NEWS In 2015, I have been focused on the movement and musculature of horses in work. I have been exploring the animal in motion in watercolor and oil and have been developing a themed show with these magnificent animals in mind. I want to continue to push my technique, color process and stretch my understanding of light and texture and how they can play off each other to create new powerful and emotional images.

Cowgirl Up This show at Horizon is an eclectic mix of my work mostly from the last two years. I snuck in one painting I did do in College as I had recently drug it out and it has never been shown. Grandmother is a painting that I believe led me down an interesting path of figure painting and deeper emotional work. The last works I did were the horse paintings, Water horse and Cowgirl Up. I have enjoyed seeing the progression of skill and work that still retains the hidden story. I am currently published this year as an illustrator, and so many of my paintings could be seen as having a story all their own. I love that.

She loves hiding animals and insects throughout the pages to interest and captivate the children who read. Steinbert is a dogscientist who is searching for the best way to discover everything. Jeni is searching for the best way to show all the readers what Steinbert is up to! Bright colors, fun shapes and even funnier faces hopefully make Steinbert’s Method a fun and educational read. SPECIAL GROUPS If you are considering attending one of these groups for the first time, it is a good idea to contact them via email for more information and to get an orientation of what to expect in your first visit! You can check the calendar at http://calendar.horizonuu.org/ Horizon Book Group: 4th Tuesdays 12p. (bookclub@horizonuu.org) The Horizon Book Group meets at 12 Noon on the fourth Tuesday of each month in the church Library. Every June and November the group decides on the books for the following six months. Bring a brown bag lunch and join in this fun group that is open to women and men. You’ll be able to share in an invigorating conversation on the session’s book. Current selections are found in the Library information niche in the lobby/narthex. For more info, you may contact bookclub@horizonuu.org. Buddhist Sangha: Tuesdays 7 PM - 9:00 PM. (buddhists@horizonuu.org ) Buddhist Sangha ("Sangha" is equivalent to a covenant group) is a weekly gathering that studies the Dharma (the teachings of Buddhism.) This is an ongoing exploration of the Four Noble Truths and the Eight Fold Path, the essential teachings of Buddhism. It is participatory and although consistency is encouraged, sessions can be attended on a drop in basis. We welcome anyone interested in a meditation practice. The Men’s Support Group provides men a supportive, safe environment for sharing personal challenges and concerns in a confidential setting. Many men were socialized to share only things external to them. The Men’s Support Group offers a sanctuary to share more about matters of the heart. We welcome Moms and Dads to meet in the Horizon Church library. We have topics of interest not just about parenting UU children but personal and spiritual self-growth. Past topics have included: the philosophy of life according to Doctor Who, Karma, creating our "bucket list", our family trees, and what does it mean to be a UU parent. We also do a social outreach project once a year. Our schedule follows the school year and we break for school holidays and for the summer. During the school year, child care is provided. mondaywings@horizonuu.org The Women’s Friendship in Growth (WFIG) meets on the 2nd, 4th, and 5th Wednesdays, from 7:30 - 9 pm in the Horizon Library. The purpose of this group is to strengthen friendships among women. In addition to regular check-ins about our lives, we have discussions that help us get to know one another better. On 2nd Wednesdays, topics come from a “This I Believe” book. No advance reading is required. On 4th Wednesdays we start with a TED talk we watch together. On 5th Wednesdays we do a variety of fun activities!
