FUTURE SUNDAYS Horizon encourages you to attend weekly worship here within your community, on Sundays at 10:30AM

October 20, “Ghostbusters in the Basement” - Rev. Hamilton Do you know the ghosts in your basement? All of us have a past, but are we aware of its influence on our lives? We carry more than our own past. We carry generations of attitudes, values and customs, and often dysfunctional behavior that will persist until we look it in the eye and decide to exorcise it.

October 27, Halloween Service “Skeleton Woman” - Rev. Hamilton The story of Skeleton Woman comes from the Inuit tradition. Clarissa Pinkola Estes made it famous in Women Who Run with the Wolves. When we first meet her she is terrifying, but if we get to know her, we discover where the terror comes from. Everyone has a skeleton in their closet. We ask them to come out today.

UPCOMING EVENTS Animal Blessing Next Sunday: In keeping with the tradition to recognize the role our animal friends play in our lives, and to honor Saint Francis whose feast day is in October, Rev. Hamilton will celebrate our annual animal blessing on the 27th at 2 PM. This will give people time to grab a bite, get their pets from home and come back for the blessing.

Halloween Service: You are also invited to come to the Sunday service at 10:30 on the 27th in costume! It is Halloween week after all.

First Wednesday Vespers: “Harvesting” is our theme for November. Is may seem obvious for Thanksgiving month to reflect on the bounty of the earth and all the blessings we have heaped upon us. But it also asks us to look more deeply into the trials and deprivations that have been part of our lives. What have we learned from them? What are the “teachable moments” in your life, and what have you learned from them? Are there regrets in your life? Of course. They may be our best teachers. Above all, we reap what we plant. Can we be boldly honest with ourselves and see what seeds we have been planting? What will be the harvest of our actions—even our intentions. Vespers is 7 to 7:30, Discussion of the topic 7:30 to 9. Come early and join us for brown bag diner.

Change in the Air facilitated by Lyssa Jenkens. One scholar wrote that organizational change requires 300 people to have a conversion experience that will take them all to the same place. Clearly, he does not know much about Unitarian Universalist! With so much change afoot at Horizon, we will take time to discuss received wisdom about personal and institutional change, with time to reflect on our own experiences and expectations.

Share the Plate for Sunday Oct 20th Horizon has a collection for non-profit organizations once a month during our worship service. The Share the Plate collection on Sunday, October 20th, is to benefit At Risk Children Foundation. Our own Andy Kernan serves as President: “Improving the lives of orphans in Haiti continues. At-Risk Children President and Horizon member Andy Kernan is very grateful for the opportunity to again share successes with Haitian orphans. Last year’s Share the Plate went a long way toward finishing a successful school year for 84 children in our care. This year as always has been challenging, yet we have taken on the administration of educating a total of 250 children. For just $152 dollars, each of our children can attend school for the year which includes one of their meals. We also are expanding our efforts collaborating with like-minded individuals. I look forward to sharing Challenges and Successes and having Horizon again participate in breaking cycles of poverty in the poorest country in our hemisphere at Sunday Oct. 20th Share the Plate Sunday. With Sincere Gratitude, Andy Kernan”

Town Hall Meeting Held at Horizon As we prepare for Rev. Dennis Hamilton’s retirement and the continuance of Horizon’s ministry in 2014, we have invited Rev. Susan Smith, Regional Congregational Life Consultant, to come and answer our questions and to help make this transition a positive adventure. This important gathering took place on Wednesday evening at the Fellowship Hall. Rev. Smith talked about the transition process, interim ministry and gave her unique perspective about the Horizon shift. If you would like to get more information, please contact our Director of Lay Ministry Marianna Seaton at dlm@horizonuu.org

A Note from the DLRE * By Lauren Daniell * dlre@horizonuu.org

I’m off to the national LREDA Fall Conference! Here’s just a quick note to say that I will not be at Horizon on Sunday. I am very fortunate to be able to attend the Liberal Religious Educators Association’s (LREDA) annual conference in St. Paul, Minnesota. Think “GA for DREs!” This conference is for professional Unitarian Universalist religious educators from all over the US and Canada, will include many workshops, and will give me countless ideas and techniques for all learners of all ages. In addition to attending all these workshops, I will also participate in a 15 hour Renaissance Module on the Philosophy of Unitarian Universalist Religious Education for which I have been reading and preparing for these past two weeks. This module is all part of a certification process I will be going through the next year to become a Certified Professional Religious Educator. In my absence there is still much going on; all classes will run as usual, you can sign up for the Halloween Party on the 26th, the COA class will be holding a carwash fundraiser during the service this Sunday and they will also be taking wreath orders for the holidays. Make sure to stop by and support their efforts to earn money to go to Boston this summer. I’ll be back by next Sunday, October 27, exhausted I’m sure, but full of new ideas for Horizon! I know I’ll have much to report after my conference. I feel very grateful to Horizon for this continuing education opportunity. Yours in Faith, Lauren

Attention Youth: Opportunities ahead!

There are many opportunities for our teens 14-18 years of age in the near future. Please contact Lauren (dlre@horizonuu.org) if you are interested in attending.

Youth Leadership Conference Nov 15-17, 2013 9:00 pm Friday-11:00 am Sunday First Unitarian Church of Oklahoma City Cost $40 – for each registrant, youth and adults Registration limited to 4 youth and 2 adults from each congregation – if you have additional people that want to attend, we will have a waiting list. Led by Ann McDermott (Youth Coordinator at 1UOKC), Bronwyn Agnew and Olivia Henshaw (former youth leaders in SW District). Registration will be available soon at www.uuokc.org What to expect: This will be a working conference designed to give youth and adults an opportunity to gain skills and acquire resources to take back to their home congregations to enhance youth programs all over the district. We will cover a variety of topics including basic youth group structure, community building, youth/adult shared leadership strategies, and tips on integrating social justice and anti-oppression work into your group. The ultimate goal is to create youth groups that are balanced in their approach. These tend to be more successful and help us to honor our seven principles. We will also help youth and adults to identify how to better integrate the youth as individuals and the youth group as a whole into the congregation at large.
