FUTURE SUNDAYS Horizon encourages you to attend weekly worship here within your community, on Sundays at 10:30AM

October 27, Halloween Service “Skeleton Woman” - Rev. Hamilton The story of Skeleton Woman comes from the Inuit tradition. Clarissa Pinkola Estes made it famous in Women Who Run with the Wolves. When we first meet her she is terrifying, but if we get to know her, we discover where the terror comes from. Everyone has a skeleton in their closet. We ask them to come out today.

November’s Theme: “Harvesting” November 3, “Abundance and Scarcity” - Rev. Hamilton Isn’t it strange how no matter how much we have there is always more to want. How can we become satisfied for more than a few minutes? What would it be like to not want more? Why do we feel scarcity even when we are secure? Can we live graciously in the midst of plenty, or in the midst of poverty?

November 10, “Unlikely Harvest” - Lyssa Jenkens Have you ever received all that you longed for only to discover is was less than you hoped? Or, perhaps you have grieved for a lost dream not knowing that something far more satisfying was about to come into your life unbidden. All of our lives are full of unlikely harvests, for good and ill. On Nov. 10, we will consider two qualities of spirit—willingness and willfulness—and the unlikely harvests they yield in our lives.

November 17, “Reaping What You Sow” - Re. Hamilton So what do you think happens when you die? Will the universe rectify our failings? Will we be punished or rewarded? Is there such a thing as karma, and what would it mean to our living and dying? Is there true justice, and what would that look like? And really, why should I do well if there is no ultimate justice?

November 24, THANKSGIVING SERVICE “Lessons of the Pilgrims” Rev. Hamilton When our UU religious ancestors landed at Plymouth Rock in 1620, they could have no inkling what that would bloom into. The harvest of that colonial life has been astounding for some. It meant the end of many of the indigenous people though. We tell the story and reflect on what gratitude can do for America. We will break bread together in our annual Thanksgiving Communion.

UPCOMING EVENTS Animal Blessing Next Sunday: In keeping with the tradition to recognize the role our animal friends play in our lives, and to honor Saint Francis whose feast day is in October, Rev. Hamilton will celebrate our annual animal blessing on the 27th at 2 PM. This will give people time to grab a bite, get their pets from home and come back for the blessing.

Halloween Service: You are also invited to come to the Sunday service at 10:30 on the 27th in costume! It is Halloween week after all.

First Wednesday Vespers: “Harvesting” is our theme for November. Is may seem obvious for Thanksgiving month to reflect on the bounty of the earth and all the blessings we have heaped upon us. But it also asks us to look more deeply into the trials and deprivations that have been part of our lives. What have we learned from them? What are the “teachable moments” in your life, and what have you learned from them? Are there regrets in your life? Of course. They may be our best teachers. Above all, we reap what we plant. Can we be boldly honest with ourselves and see what seeds we have been planting? What will be the harvest of our actions—even our intentions. Vespers is 7 to 7:30, Discussion of the topic 7:30 to 9. Come early and join us for brown bag diner.

Change in the Air facilitated by Lyssa Jenkens. One scholar wrote that organizational change requires 300 people to have a conversion experience that will take them all to the same place. Clearly, he does not know much about Unitarian Universalist! With so much change afoot at Horizon, we will take time to discuss received wisdom about personal and institutional change, with time to reflect on our own experiences and expectations.

A Note from the DLRE * By Lauren Daniell * dlre@horizonuu.org

My Week in “DLRE Paradise” Below you see pictured part of my group’s final project at the end of an intensive three-day class on the Philosophy of Religious Education. Thirty Religious Educators took this course in St. Paul, Minnesota before a national conference. We were tasked with creating a brochure to advertise the aims of Religious Education on just one piece of paper! As you may recall from last week’s column, I spent last week in St. Paul, Minnesota for this class and also for a three day conference for Religious Education directors from all over the US and Cananda. I had a wonderful experience and learned so much not only from UUA staff, but from other Directors of Religious Education, too. If you are a parent of a child in the program, you will see the direct results of my experiences in St. Paul at Horizon through the way we communicate and what gets communicated to you. There will be more updates on what the children are learning in class, and also information on UU Parenting. I was introduced to a program called, “Full Week Faith” that takes spirituality out of the classroom and into the home. Even if your children are no longer at home, adults at Horizon will benefit as well. This conference gave me the courage to try adding a technological component to our Adult Religious Education classes. I hope that by this spring we will be able to use Skype to assist those that can’t make it to class in person, and perhaps even run a “virtual” class where the facilitator and students meet both face-to-face AND online. I feel so very fortunate to have had the opportunity to travel and have such wonderful experiences. I can’t wait for the additions to our Relgious Education programs to take place. I am very thankful to be serving at Horizon and to be your DLRE. It is through your generous support that I am able to continue to grow not only as the DLRE, but as a Unitarian Universalist as well. Yours in Faith,

Lauren

Attention Youth: Opportunities ahead!

There are many opportunities for our teens 14-18 years of age in the near future. Please contact Lauren (dlre@horizonuu.org) if you are interested in attending.

Youth Leadership Conference Nov 15-17, 2013 9:00 pm Friday-11:00 am Sunday First Unitarian Church of Oklahoma City Cost $40 – for each registrant, youth and adults Registration limited to 4 youth and 2 adults from each congregation – if you have additional people that want to attend, we will have a waiting list. Led by Ann McDermott (Youth Coordinator at 1UOKC), Bronwyn Agnew and Olivia Henshaw (former youth leaders in SW District). Registration will be available soon at www.uuokc.org What to expect: This will be a working conference designed to give youth and adults an opportunity to gain skills and acquire resources to take back to their home congregations to enhance youth programs all over the district. We will cover a variety of topics including basic youth group structure, community building, youth/adult shared leadership strategies, and tips on integrating social justice and anti-oppression work into your group. The ultimate goal is to create youth groups that are balanced in their approach. These tend to be more successful and help us to honor our seven principles. We will also help youth and adults to identify how to better integrate the youth as individuals and the youth group as a whole into the congregation at large.

UU Parenting Corner

This is a new section of the newsletter just for parents raising their children in the UU faith. Each month we’ll explore a topic relevant to raising children as UUs. This month’s topic is “spirituality.” How can I nurture the spiritual side of my child? Sophia Lyon Fahs, liberal religious educator, author and activist, felt that experiences with nature were of crucial importance to encourage children's natural sense of wonder. With the prevalence of electronic devices, more time spent in the car and increased involvement in structured settings, our children spend less and less time in the natural world. Here are some simple activities for families to enjoy together in nature to foster a sense of wonder and appreciation of one’s place in the world thanks to the website Children, Nature, and Spirituality http://www.aeker.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Children-Nature-and-Spirituality-Activities-aeker-com.pdf

• Experiment with silence by lying on the ground outdoors for 15 minutes without saying anything. Pay attention to what you are thinking about, and then notice the reports of your senses of sight and smell. This is the practice of wonder.

• Create a nature table. Collect things as you go for walks and make that an activity. Leaves, seeds, stones, twigs, shells are all appropriate. Making a space at home where you can put your finds from nature is a great way to share it with others and remind you of being outdoors.

•Count the number of sounds you hear. Find somewhere to sit where you will be able to hear the birds. Ask your child to close their eyes and simply sit and listen together for different birdcalls. Ask your child to hold up their hands and each time they hear a new birdcall, count it on their fingers. After a few minutes open your eyes and see how many each of you have both counted. What other sounds can you hear? Which ones are nearby and which ones far away? Now they have their eyes open, count how many different colors they can see from where they are sitting?

•Observe the small things: Take a piece of string and put it down on some grass in a straight line. Ask your child to imagine they are the size of an ant and follow the string, inch by inch while crawling on your bellies. Look out for what would be natural wonders to an ant – a bent blade of grass, a drop of water, some pollen. Encourage children not to look up, but to really immerse themselves in the micro world. Ask questions - such as who are your nearest neighbors in this micro world? Do you think they are friendly? What would a spider do to you? Would she tickle you or take you for a ride? ******************************************************************************

Attention Parents: There will be a Children’s Chapel led by Lauren Daniell this Sunday, October 27th beginning at 10:30. Students in Kindergarten-5th grade will meet in the portable to celebrate Día de los Muertos and remember loved ones who have passed away.
