Contemplations * Rev. Dennis Hamilton * srminister@horizonuu.org

The Southwestern Conference UU Ministers have a retreat each year, and two ministers are selected to present an “odyssey” the story of their faith journey. This year is my swan song odyssey. After seven decades I will present the lessons, the harvest of a life of inquiry and service. In Hindu tradition one’s life is divided into four stages or ashramas corresponding roughly to childhood and school, productive middle age, a deepening maturity and, in one’s elder years a dedication to service and devotion. The Sanskrit word for this stage of life is Sannyasa. In my life, my call to the ministry was my entry into Sannyasa. The last thirty years in the ministry have held a long series of lessons leading me ever more deeply into the next chapter of retirement and reflection. In our Unitarian Universalist Lifespan Religious Education, we also look at stages of life based on James Fowler’s model of faith development. I introduce you to this modelin the New UU sessions. The question is, what stage are you in and do you see that your life really can develop into a lasting context of peace and understanding. Can you see the stage ahead and what do you need to do to realize it? You have heard the expression “When the student is ready the teacher will come.” Well when you reflect honestly on your life the teacher within you will begin to teach. It is as if you knew it all along but just weren’t ready to hear it. ~~~ This month our theme of Harvest asks us all to reflect on our lives so far and think about the lessons we have learned, the gifts life has given us, and the legacy we have left behind, positive or negative. You are all invited to FIRST WEDNESDAY VESPERS (7 to 7:30 pm and discussion following, 7:30 to 9 pm) to explore the stages of your life with other inquirers. I have been doing this reflection on life lessons for so many years; you might think it would get stale or repetitious. It doesn’t. It just gets deeper and richer. Come explore your life with us.

The church, Horizon, has been on a life journey also, going through stages and learning lessons. Through this quarter century of change and harvest, Horizon has thrived partly because it has been intentional in its development. We plan ahead and we learn from our mistakes and, even better, from other church’s mistakes. We are not condemned to learning only from our own foibles. So in preparation for this next stage of Horizon’s life, we are preparing a Strategic Plan to provide a chart and compass for the next adventure and the next minister. On the THIRD WEDNESDAY of the month, November 20 at 7 pm, we will have a Town Hall Meeting to get YOUR input into this Strategic Plan. You are encouraged to voice your thoughts, your ideas and dreams for the church and to help plan the next stage in its development. This is also a time when the leadership can explain what plans are in the works and how they plan to guide Horizon through the next few years. So please put this on your calendar and let us know what you want for the church as it continues to develop. ~~~ Lastly, a plug for PASTA, our fall service auction. It is coming next Saturday, November 9. Please send in your offerings and plan to come and set your social calendar for the winter season. I like to say that PASTA and the spring service auction FIASCO are the best and funnest way to raise some money for the church. Besides, they don’t cost a thing. You would like to have people to your house for a movie night or a theme party or maybe plan an outing for eight or nine people. This way you still have the party, but people will pay the church to attend. As for when you buy a service, you would go out to eat anyway, or go to the movies or the symphony. Now you can give the church the money and go with other UUs. It is a real bargain. So I hope to see you at First Wednesday, the Town Hall Meeting and PASTA. Faithfully, Dennis

FUTURE SUNDAYS Horizon encourages you to attend weekly worship here within your community, on Sundays at 10:30AM

November’s Theme: “Harvesting” November 3, “Abundance and Scarcity” - Rev. Hamilton Isn’t it strange how no matter how much we have there is always more to want. How can we become satisfied for more than a few minutes? What would it be like to not want more? Why do we feel scarcity even when we are secure? Can we live graciously in the midst of plenty, or in the midst of poverty?

November 10, “Unlikely Harvest” - Lyssa Jenkens Have you ever received all that you longed for only to discover is was less than you hoped? Or, perhaps you have grieved for a lost dream not knowing that something far more satisfying was about to come into your life unbidden. All of our lives are full of unlikely harvests, for good and ill. On Nov. 10, we will consider two qualities of spirit—willingness and willfulness—and the unlikely harvests they yield in our lives.

November 17, “Reaping What You Sow” - Rev. Hamilton So what do you think happens when you die? Will the universe rectify our failings? Will we be punished or rewarded? Is there such a thing as karma, and what would it mean to our living and dying? Is there true justice, and what would that look like? And really, why should I do well if there is no ultimate justice?

November 24, THANKSGIVING SERVICE “Lessons of the Pilgrims” Rev. Hamilton When our UU religious ancestors landed at Plymouth Rock in 1620, they could have no inkling what that would bloom into. The harvest of that colonial life has been astounding for some. It meant the end of many of the indigenous people though. We tell the story and reflect on what gratitude can do for America. We will break bread together in our annual Thanksgiving Communion.

UPCOMING EVENTS First Wednesday Vespers: “Harvesting” is our theme for November. Is may seem obvious for Thanksgiving month to reflect on the bounty of the earth and all the blessings we have heaped upon us. But it also asks us to look more deeply into the trials and deprivations that have been part of our lives. What have we learned from them? What are the “teachable moments” in your life, and what have you learned from them? Are there regrets in your life? Of course. They may be our best teachers. Above all, we reap what we plant. Can we be boldly honest with ourselves and see what seeds we have been planting? What will be the harvest of our actions—even our intentions. Vespers is 7 to 7:30, Discussion of the topic 7:30 to 9 PM. Come early and join us for brown bag diner.

Social Justice Environmental Task Force Meeting on Sunday, November 10th - Administration Office at Noon Bring your potluck lunches and join us to hear a recap of activities from this past year. We will also discuss refocusing and diversifying our efforts for the coming year and choosing a new chair as Aly Tharp steps down to concentrate her efforts on climate activism. We’ll be meeting around the table in the Administration Office. Come join the team whose focus is the health of our planet—our only home! Bring your ideas and energy!

Annual Thanksgiving Day potluck coming up! Bring a dish to share and celebrate the feast with church friends Sign up in Fellowship Hall This event started in 1995 when Jane Roehl and Mat Matlock were searching for a way to celebrate Thanksgiving far from family. They decided it would be wonderful to invite other people who wanted to share the day to get together at church for the meal. It was a big hit and has been going on ever since! Some of the joys are that there are lots of choices for wonderful food and warmth to having friends to be with! $2 donation per family requested ====================================================================================

A Note from the DLRE * By Lauren Daniell * dlre@horizonuu.org

Thank you to all who worked to make the Halloween Party a spooktacular success! Over fifty volunteers worked over two days to bring the annual Horizon Halloween Party together. Thanks to one and all for all their hard work and dedication, from putting together the Haunted House, bringing cakes for the Cake Walk, staffing an art table, a carnival game or the Photo Booth, participating in the TrUUnk or Treat or telling fortunes. A great time was had by all!

Attention Youth: Opportunities ahead!

There are many opportunities for our teens 14-18 years of age in the near future. Please contact Lauren (dlre@horizonuu.org) if you are interested in attending.

Youth Leadership Conference Nov 15-17, 2013 9:00 pm Friday-11:00 am Sunday First Unitarian Church of Oklahoma City Cost $40 – for each registrant, youth and adults Registration limited to 4 youth and 2 adults from each congregation – if you have additional people that want to attend, we will have a waiting list. Led by Ann McDermott (Youth Coordinator at 1UOKC), Bronwyn Agnew and Olivia Henshaw (former youth leaders in SW District). Registration will be available soon at www.uuokc.org What to expect: This will be a working conference designed to give youth and adults an opportunity to gain skills and acquire resources to take back to their home congregations to enhance youth programs all over the district. We will cover a variety of topics including basic youth group structure, community building, youth/adult shared leadership strategies, and tips on integrating social justice and anti-oppression work into your group. The ultimate goal is to create youth groups that are balanced in their approach. These tend to be more successful and help us to honor our seven principles. We will also help youth and adults to identify how to better integrate the youth as individuals and the youth group as a whole into the congregation at large.

UU Parenting Corner

This is a new section of the newsletter just for parents raising their children in the UU faith. Each month we’ll explore a topic relevant to raising children as UUs. This month’s topic is “spirituality.” How can I nurture the spiritual side of my child? If you were raised in another religious tradition besides Unitarian Universalism, did you say nightly prayers before bedtime? Believe it or not, UU families can pray too, even if your family identifies itself as humanist or secular. Some religions call these actions “prayers” or “blessings,” but you shouldn’t let the language keep you from engaging your child in activities that promote his or her relationship with the greater world. Giving thanks and remembering those around your family is a universal emotion that is not tied to any particular religious tradition. Saying a “prayer” will add to your child’s sense of connectedness to others and promote our Seventh Principle, “the interdependent web of life of which we are all a part.” Prayers and blessings remind us that we are all in this together and will aid in your child’s sense of security and well-being. Here is a common approach to praying with children adopted from the traditional method, “Five Finger Prayers.” 1. The thumb is the closest finger to you, so start praying for those who are closest to you. They are the persons easiest to remember. 2. The next finger is the index. Pray for those who teach you, instruct you and heal you. They need the support and wisdom to show direction to others. 3. The following finger is the tallest. It reminds us of our leaders, the governors and those who have authority. 4. The fourth finger is the ring finger. It may surprise you to learn that it is our weakest finger. It should remind us to pray for the weakest, the sick, or those plagued by problems. 5. Finally, we have the pinkie, the smallest of all. Your pinkie should remind you to pray for yourself. When you are done praying for the other four groups, you will be able to see your own needs but in the proper perspective, and you will be able to pray for your own needs in a better way.
