FUTURE SUNDAYS

Horizon encourages you to attend weekly worship here within your community, on Sundays at 10:30AM

December 15, Choir Christmas Concert: John Rutter’s Gloria It is always a pleasure to hear our choir perform a great work at this holiday season. This year our Music Director, Stanley Moody has chosen John Rutter’s Gloria. This celebratory work will surprise you and give you a taste of the traditional. The accompaniment is trumpets, piano and percussion, so be prepared for a little bombast. John Rutter is a modern composer whose works are widely acclaimed and appreciated. December 22 “What Child Is This?” - Rev. Dennis Hamilton I remember singing “O Holy Night” at church as a boy soprano. Things were so simple then, and holy. Baby Jesus was a magic baby and the story, although odd, was compelling. I think that is when I became a leftist though, favoring the poor and being outraged at the Romans and the Pharisees for selling out and abusing the little people. The irony is that the Church was so much more like the Romans than the Holy Family. Who was this child? What did it all mean for our world? Where was the holy here?

Parade of Poinsettias - Dec. 15 Help Decorate Horizon for the Holidays! As if we didn’t have enough wonderful things to brighten our lives this Sunday, here’s something else – helping Horizon’s Flower Fund with the Parade of Poinsettias! Join the Parade – Easy as 1-2-3! (1) Contribute what you can to the Flower Fund! (2) Get beautiful plants! (3) Be happy, knowing you’ve helped Horizon look beautiful! Questions? Contact Pam Schuman at flowers@horizonuu.org or see her on the chancel after service to pick your favorites. Thanks for your participation – and happy holidays to you and yours!

GETTING READY FOR A NEW YEAR! ANNUAL INTERGENERATIONAL SHARING SERVICE ON SUNDAY, DECEMBER 29 Come! Come, whoever you are Visitor, worshipper, lover of sharing! Ours is a service of many voices. Come yet again! Come!

2013 has been quite an eventful year – Margaret Thatcher died; the Affordable Care Act began its processes; the United States government shut down – partially; Horizon cancelled a Sunday service – due to an astounding ice storm that also caused the cancellation of a marathon and a holiday parade; Nelson Mandela died; and – oh yes – we began planning for Rev. Dennis Hamilton's retirement in May of 2014!

What challenges will 2014 bring? How will we meet them – with resistance, grace, humor? How does each of us - and how do all of us - prepare to move forward into yet another year on our life's journey? The Intergenerational Sharing Service on Sunday, December 29, provides a fabulous opportunity to share with each other those sources of inspiration that keep us looking and moving forward to the future - onward and upward! There are no R.E. classes on this Sunday, - although childcare for infants is still provided - so that all who are a part of our congregation - our gathering - at Horizon are able to take part in the Sharing Service. This worship service does not feature a minister presenting a sermon. Instead, as we look upon the closing of the old year and the opening of the year, anyone attending the worship service young or old - is invited to bring something to share: a poem, a prayer, a song, a story, the possibilities are nearly endless. So, consider: What inspires you? What brings you hope for the future? What is your wish for the world? Is it music – or a story – or a song – or a poem? How would you like to share that with the rest of your friends, acquaintances, and fellow worshippers at Horizon? Please, keep the piece for sharing brief, so that all who wish to share may do so. If you have any questions, or know that you have something you plan on sharing, please, e-mail worshiparts@horizonuu.org. The opportunity to share is not limited to those who give advance notice. If you think you want to share, but are unsure - for whatever reason - you may not reach a decision until the time of the service. Still, it is reassuringly helpful to the members of the Worship Arts Committee to know that there are at least some who do plan to share. And the experiences of past services bear witness to in-service spontaneous or last-minute decisions to share from a few individuals as well. All are welcome! Join us on Sunday, December 29, as we get ourselves ready to sing out the old year and sing in the New Year - 2014!

UU Parenting Corner

A UU approach to including Jesus in your family’s holiday season Christmas time can be hard for UU parents. In her article, “Tis the season for your own family rituals,” author Meg Cox acknowledges the fact that UU parents walk a fine line this time of year; they may not believe in the divinity of Jesus Christ and avoid including Jesus when celebrating with their children. Parents might have “baggage” from their religion of origin or feel hurt by a Christian church they’ve left behind. On the other hand, by rejecting all things religious around Christmas, UU parents risk overemphasizing the secular aspects of the season so the holiday might only revolve around Santa and the rampant materialism of the holiday and lack real substance and meaning. So what is a UU parent to do? First, a UU parent must realize that their children might have a different view of Jesus than they do. One remark I hear over and over from UU parents who were raised in other denominations is how accepting their children are of Jesus and other religious figures. I myself encountered this when I taught RE; my students freely used words like “Holy,” “God,” and “prayer,” and at first I was taken aback. I worried they were only absorbing the Christian culture so prevalent here. Then I realized that they had learned these words without all the religious-conservative baggage that I had surrounding these words. They had a completely different understanding of religious vocabulary than I. My religion of origin still defined those words for me whereas UUism had shaped the words for my students. Their RE teachers and parents had done a good job! Secondly, a parent should look inwards and consider their own concept of Jesus. Is your view of Jesus still defined by your religion of origin or conservative news commentators? Have you gone back to the Bible and reread it through a UU lens? Have you discussed Jesus with your children? This year children K-5th grade are looking at the Bible and Jesus from a UU perspective and their view of Jesus might surprise you. In her article, Cox offers a very UU solution to the Christmas/Jesus dilemma; focus on Jesus the person and his actions as outlined in the scriptures: So let’s start by embracing the validity of celebrating Jesus’s birth and then consider how to observe his values and teachings in a UU context. Talk about his messages and methods to your children, share stories of Jesus helping the poor and outcast,

the_week@horizonuu the_week@horizon v05.13.12page 13 of 24

feeding the hungry and furthering peace. And talk about how closely these values align with the UU Principles. Cox outlines steps parents can take to create meaningful rituals that incorporate both Jesus and his actions: Talking isn’t enough. Rituals require action. Jesus believed we should help those most in need. So, one way to celebrate his birthday is to create memorable philanthropic traditions with your kids, even if you have very little money to spare. By linking Jesus’s birth, his life story and their families’ acts of charity, UU parents can make Christmas more meaningful for their families, avoid the materialism so prevalent in our society and define Jesus in UU terms. The author has some suggestions for rituals to incorporate Jesus’s life and the UU Principles: - Buy double groceries for every major holiday feast, including Easter and Christmas and donate them to charity. - Making and decorating a UU Helping Others box, to which the family will regularly contribute money for the coming year. You can cover a coffee can with paper, and cut a slit in the lid. The kids can donate part of each allowance. Christmas is a good time to vote on family charity. - Another idea is to make a family vow to serve your community in the year ahead. Light a chalice or a candle and promise to participate weekly or monthly in a local community service project. As you light the chalice, talk about why this is a season of light and how one of the ways UUs shine their light in the world is by helping others. To read the full article with even more ideas on how to include Jesus and create meaningful rituals during the holidays, click on this link: http://www.uuworld.org/spirit/articles/2276.shtml I hope you will be able to incorporate some of the suggestions from this column into your family’s holiday traditions this season and make this time of year even more meaningful for your loved ones. The UU Parenting Corner will be on hiatus until January, so let me take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy Holiday Season!

Heifer International Fundraiser in RE in December

photo: courtesy of Heifer.org

The children in each religious education class will discuss how Heifer gives a hand up instead of a handout to needy families. Recipient families learn sustainable farming practices and how to earn income from their gift. Heifer chooses animal with “seven M’s” value—they provide milk, meat, material, manure, muscle, money, and motivation. Heifer’s policy of passing on the gift means the animal’s offspring will be given to another family in the village in a cycle of empowerment that has been going on for over 65 years! What can your child do? Let them raise money for Heifer by doing “chores for change” around the house. They can also check out www.heifer.org to learn more about Heifer! How can you help? Have a conversation with your child about our UU values, including the inherent worth of each person and the importance of making the world a better place. You are your child’s most important teacher! Buy shares of animals to honor family, friends, and teachers, and lead by example—tell your family to buy you a share of a goat or honeybees as an alternative to just “more stuff” this holiday! Contact Katie at 214-351-9816 or socialjustice@horizonuu.org. Thank you!

Forum. Facilitated by John Myers a class discussion on “For December the theme is “Preserving”.What is worth preserving? In your life, this church, our nation, the environment? The Chalice Circle model for interactive learning will continue.

A Big Thank You! On Saturday, December 7, three members of the Men's Group came to Horizon at 8:00 - M. C. Meador, Jim, and Stephen. It was they who sanded and de-iced the sidewalks and steps leading to the church doors, as well as making sure that the doors into the portable could be opened. Thank you guys!

A 1970s Classic TV Night – Jan 10 Friday, Jan 10th at 5 pm at Wendy Sue’s home (contact me for directions): Come eat, drink and be drawn into this 1970s classic-a fascinating sci-fi,/fantasy TV world (title available via email)! Once drawn in, you find you cannot leave... We will pick up where we left off last time, but have no fear if you are not familiar with the series; like every good TV show, there is a recap in the beginning with the opening credits, and you'll have plenty of folks around you happy to fill in any gaps. The cost for this event will be $10 per adult as it was first offered as an auction event. No special, extra-huge TV here, just mine. The food is guaranteed to be great (of course!). This year, I plan to cook a nice ham-the smell will drive us wild! Cole slaw, soft drinks, dessert, stuff. If anyone wants to bring anything else, please feel free to do so, a la potluck style, yer choice. (Hint: I don't eat chips, so if you want 'em, bring 'em! LOL!). Please note: I have two very friendly pussycats who may or may not choose to stay and watch with us. The food, however, might be a great lure for them. ;) See you then! RSVP via email please!
