There are many things we get from being part of a church, solace in times of sorrow, friends to celebrate with, a force for social action and social conscience, encouragement on our path of spiritual development, but there is only one reason to join a Unitarian Universalist Church, that is, to support it. You want to support it because it stands against superstition and fear...because it points to what is noblest and best in human life...because it is open to women and men of whatever race, creed, gender expression, or place of origin. You want to support a Unitarian Universalist church because it has a free pulpit...because you can hear ideas expressed there which would cost other ministers their jobs. You want to support it because it is a place where children can come without being saddled with guilt or terrified of some "celestial peeping tom"...where they can learn that religion is for joy, for comfort, for gratitude and love. You want to support it because it is a place where walls between people are torn down rather than built up...because it is a place for the religious displaced persons of our time, the refugees from mixed marriages, the unwanted free thinkers and those who insist against orthodoxy that they must work out their own beliefs. You want to support a Unitarian Universalist church because it is more concerned with human beings than dogmas...because it searches for the holy, rather than dwells upon the depraved. .because it calls no one a sinner, yet knows how deep is the struggle in each person's breast and how great is the hunger for what is good. You want to support a Unitarian Universalist church because it can laugh, and because it can help us to laugh at ourselves. You want to support it because it insults neither your intelligence nor your conscience, and because it calls you to worship what is truly worthy of your sacrifice.

GET READY FOR SUPER CELEBRATION SUNDAY ONE-DAY PLEDGE DRIVE FEBRUARY 17th 2013 Commitment Campaign
Our Commitment Campaign will happen this year on one day, Super Celebration Sunday, February 17th. Plan to stay after the service for a delicious meal. Have a lively conversation at the Listening Lunch with your table hosts-- interesting and engaging Horizon leaders. Answer their questions and talk with them about your vision for Horizon’s future…after all, 97% of the church’s support comes from members and friends. Horizon is entirely self-supporting when it comes to our annual operating budget. On February 17th, we hope that you will make a pledge for 2013 (to begin on July 1, 2013, our new fiscal year). We need your gift—and to get your gift, we have to have your pledge card! Pledge cards are available now at the Church Welcome Center and on the Horizon website (www.horizonuu.org under the “Give” section on the left). We’d love to see you on Super Celebration Sunday, February 17th and to get your ideas about our future at the lunch afterwards. But we will want your pledge by the 17th, even if you can’t come to church on that

day! Your pledge is vital for our Board and leaders to be able to plan for the upcoming financial year.
How much should I pledge? Like other Unitarian Universalist congregations, we are entirely self-supporting (97%!) through the donations of members and friends. We encourage everyone to make a pledge commensurate with their personal circumstances and their commitment to the congregation. Every gift is appreciated! At about 300 members and friends, it costs us approximately $1,200 per adult member to operate the church. If everyone gave at this level or above, we would have an amazing campaign…but we understand that not everyone can. Our pledges at Horizon range from $120 to over $13,000 a year. Please consult our special Giving Guide on the Horizon pledge card (on our website)—it will assist you in making a decision about your gift level. Ideally, our members work towards giving 3-5% of their income. All gifts to Horizon are tax-deductible. Please consider your gift carefully and give more if you are able!
What do I need to do to participate? Come to church and get a pledge card at the Welcome Center. Think carefully about your gift, consult the Giving Guide and talk to your spouse or partner and family members. Give monthly via auto draft if at all possible. Fill out your card either before or at Super Celebration Sunday and come to church on February 17th. Stay for the Listening Lunch to talk about Horizon’s future. If you can’t come to church before or on February 17th, there’ still no excuse! You can print the pledge card off the Horizon website (www.horizonuu.org) under the “Give” section…OR you can use the card we’ll send out in an all-church email this and next week and scan your card in and send it to Commitment@horizonuu.org or to cstreece@hotmail.com OR you can fax your card and auto draft form to Horizon at 972-392-50570. Electronic contribution is an automatic transfer program which allows you to make contributions without writing checks. Q. What is the advantage of electronic contribution? A. It saves time! It saves work! It simplifies your life! You can avoid the hassle of writing and mailing checks! Q. How is my electronic contribution automatically deducted from my account? A. Once you authorize the transfer, your specified contribution is electronically transferred directly from your checking or savings account to the organizations account. Q. When will my contribution be deducted from my account? A. On its due date. You never have to worry about forgetting a payment or mailing it on time.
Q. If I do not write checks, how do I keep my checkbook balance straight? A. Since your contribution is made at a pre-established time, you simply record it in your check register on the appropriate date. Q. Without a canceled check, how can I prove I made my contribution? A. Your bank statement gives you an itemized list of electronic transfers. It is your proof of contribution and will be included in your “Record of Contributions”. Q. Is electronic contribution risky? A. Electronic contribution is less risky than check contribution. It cannot be lost, stolen or destroyed in the mail. It has an extremely high rate of accuracy.

Hamilton St. John of the Cross said, “God is Love.” If that is true, God has a lot to explain, not only about the hatred in the world but about love itself. Why is it so painful? Where does it go when it walks out the door? And are operas and country music enough reward to justify all its failures? All will be explained this Sunday. Today is New Member Sunday and the Finale of the Pledge Drive. New Member Reception at the Hamilton's, 6-8 PM.
February 24 * “What is Love” - Horizon Players Playing off of this month's theme of Love: A study in Vulnerability, Horizon Players presents an olio of Love poems, drama, song and narrative taking us through Life's adventures to explore the whys and wherefores of this intriguing question. Mother, Caring for Seven Billion. Facilitated by Gayle Loeffler, who will show the hour-long film, "Mother, Caring for Seven Billion". The film brings to light an issue that silently fuels our most pressing environmental, humanitarian and social crises--human population growth. In 2011 the world population reached 7 billion, a startling seven-fold increase since the first billion occurred 200 years ago. Discussion will follow.

The spring camp out is April 12th - 14th at Eisenhower State Park on Lake Texoma. We will be joining Community church and other UU churches in our area for a weekend of outdoor fun. You can hike, bike, kayak, sail, fish, or just enjoy some conversation while you relax around the campfire. We have several screen shelters reserved, or you can bring a tent. It is a great way to get the kids away from electronics and no camping experience is needed. Experience meaningful connections and a sense of belonging in a Journey Group. Journey Groups are a type of Chalice Circle (covenant group) based on availability to meet at a certain time. They typically last for a limited time (3-6 months). What do Journey Groups Do? Encourage spiritual growth & help us develop deeper and more meaningful relationships Listen to one another without attempting to solve each other’s problems. Consider topics such as Listening, Gratitude, Balance, Forgiveness, God, Loss and Grief, Money, Nature, Success and Failure, Friendship, Doubt, Making Peace w/ Parents, Sustainable Living, Endings, UU Principles, Our Spiritual Journeys, etc. Current Journey Groups: Every Other Thursday evening 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. 1st and 3rd Sunday afternoons 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Feel free to suggest an additional meeting time! Supporters can reload their card and pay for the reloads with cash, check, debit, or credit cards at any time, at any Kroger store, for any amount up to $500 at Customer Service or $100 by cashiers. • Reloads have to be a separate transaction from use. Cards with $0 balance are deleted from the system after 90 days and cannot be reactivated. A new card will have to be assigned and purchased from Horizon for $1. • Card is accepted in all Kroger stores and its affiliates throughout the US. It can be sent to family and friends out-of-state and still benefits Horizon, as long as the card is reloaded and used.
